    Editorial Review

If you're looking for a reliable random-orbit sander capable of fast, evenmaterial removal without bogging down, this sander is a great choice. Porter-Cable'selectronic, variable-speed, 3.7 amp motor provides 2,500 to 6,000 orbits per minute. Theright-angled gearing system allows it to maintain consistent speeds even when you'repressing it down into the work. For a sander capable of fast material removal, thisproduct offers relatively little vibration, and the large barrel grip allows users to hold andoperate the tool without excessive hand fatigue. While this sander uses hook-and-looppaper--making it easy and reliable to change paper--an adhesive-paper pad is alsoavailable. This variable-speed model can work with either eight- or five-hole paper, comes equipped for dust collection, and can attach to standard 1-1/2- or 2-1/2-inchvacuum hoses. The full kit includes the 6-inch sander, hook-and-loop pad, adust-collection hood, a dust-collection hose, a hose adapter, 12-grit hook-and-loop sandpaper, and a heavy-duty plastic carrying case. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great sander
I have a 15 year old model that uses sticky discs instead of hook&loop and no vac attachment. I have many hours on this sander and it has fallen off the work bench to the concrete floor and the ground many times...nothing has ever broke; This sander takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I had to replace the pad once. It has been extremely reliable and does a great job of swirl free sanding. It really slings out the dust,so a vac-setup on it would be great, which the new models come with. I highly recommend this sander!

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful, versatile sander
This ia a remarkably versatile sander, equally adept at finish sanding and rapid stock removal. As such, it replaces both a half-sheet finish sander and a belt sander for most people. It's aggressive, but more easily controlled than a belt sander, and with fine grits (150 and above) and at slower speeds its aggressiveness can be well moderated. Because it is a random orbital sander, it never leaves sanding marks, and sandpaper lasts considerably longer than with a finish or palm sander (at least for me).

As with all Porter-Cable tools, it is no-nonsense and well-made. On the down side, it's a bit fatiguing to grip with my medium-sized hands, the dust-collection hood is only moderately effective (although all remaining dust is directed downward), and extended use causes my hands to tingle for several hours afterwards. These criticisms are only minor, and do not diminish the sander's utility; moreover, they may apply in varying degrees to all random-orbit right-angle sanders. I do suggest the use of shock-absorbing gloves and breathing protection with it, however.

In summation, I recommend this sander highly. I have used it daily in the restoration of our 1888 Victorian, and have found it perfect for nearly every situation.

    Editorial Review

This professional-grade construction stapler is built to handle all but the toughest 16-gauge applications. The industry ranks this model's power-to-weight ratio as best in its class. We found it to be fast and powerful, capable of driving up to 16 1- to 2-inch staples a second. In fact, this model can handle eight different staple sizes. It has a top-loading, easy-release feed system with reload indicator, and jambs are easily cleared. Other worthwhile features include a mechanical countersink, narrow nose, and adjustable exhaust. Senco designed this stapler to be reliable, using 30% less parts than the competition. Among its many applications are sheathing, furniture frames, wood shingles, and decking. --Tom Kasperson ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good when it works
I bought this nailer back in October of 2004 and since the the first day of use there has been nothing but trouble. It jammed on me many times before I realized it needed to be lubricated several times throughout the days time. It is now January and I went to use it on another job and it just didn't work at all, it is now in for service and I hope the warranty will cover the problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent staple gun for sheathing and any other use
I work in roofing and I used Porter Cable nailers for a long time. When my last Porter Cable nailer broke down on me in the middle of a job I went with Senco under the recomendation of my friend whom is also a roofer and a former construction worker. Ive had this stapler for almost 9 months now and it still amazes me every time I use it.

Fire rate is amazing. It honestly sounds like a machine gun and every staple it drives goes in correctly and without jams. Its really light and the handle is very comfortable. I can drive staples all day in plywood and not have a blister on my hand or have sore arms.

In the 9 months I have used it it has only jammed about three times, and those jams were when I changed brands of staples that had a really sticky and cheap varnish to them which caused the gun to go haywire.

My only gripes are that the front end spring that holds the driving assembly in place can get loose causing your gun to misfire. Simple solution for that though, just get some pressure pliers with a wide mouth and compress the spring enough to hold it in place. Also the finish on the piston head chamber can get really worn out really fast. But hey youre buying this tool for work not for looks right? The CFM required to use it is a little high but if you need the kind of power this gun delivers then you shouldnt really have a problem with that. If you need something more casual I suggest the SNS40

I highly recommend this nailer for all professional contruction workers, last a long time and when they do eventually break down its very cheap to fix.

4-0 out of 5 stars After 24 months
I purchased this machine with the idea that I would give up my router table.I have and use both the shaper and the router table. The shaper I use for heavy cutting application with 4/4 and above projects. It eats wood - and in doing so cuts time required for any project. As a furniture maker my projects normally require some shaping. Under 4/4 wood the router table is the primary shaping power tool I use usless we are making repeated cuts as in machining flooring - then the shaper is the tool of choice. I have run about 4,000 brd feet through the shaper. If I had the need and was looking for another shaper I would purchase this one again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic machine
This machine is an upgrade from my previous shaper which was a Jet JWS-22CS.It cost me several hundred dollars to make the change but it was well worth it.I have been a woodworker since I was a child. My father was a master carpenter and he introduced me to woodworkingat a very young age.I have always had access to quality machines which makes me very critical of quality issues.

I was very disappointed with the JWS-22CS from the beginning but to speak fairly, I was expecting too much for the price range of the machine. I have discovered no significant quality issues with the Delta shaper.I set it up in about an hour and everything worked right the first time. The fence is the best I have ever used.It is accurate and easy to move and adjust.I must admit that with all of the safety guards and shields included with the fence in place it is very difficult to use the machine and I removed most of them. The machine has excellent power and runs very smooth and quiet. With dust collector connected and the canopy adjusted properly virtually no chips escape being collected. It is easy to make adjustments, change cutters, and change spindles. The mobile base precisely fits the machine and is adequately built to easily handle the weight of the machine.

I am digging very deep to find anything negative to say about this machine but here goes:For the price of the machine I think the 1/2 inch spindle accessory should have been included and the table extension surfaces are not finished to the same quality as the main table but the finish is satisfactory.

In summary, this is an excellent professional quality machine and would be a fine addition to any wood shop.I have several American made Delta machines and am extremely satisfied with all.If you are looking for a quality shaper at a fair price this machine is probably the best choice you could make.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid performer - a few set up issues
I am an amateur woodworker - handyman and have been looking for a router table for some time.I decided that a shaper would do everything that a router table could and then some.My tool buying philosophy is "buy it once, buy it right."This Delta shaper is exactly what I needed. It has the router bit spindle included - both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets are supplied.

This is a solid, heavy piece of woodworking machinery. The fence assembly is cast iron, and the spindle adjustment has a heavy hand wheel that allows for extremely precise height control. With the exception of the fine adjustment dials on the fence, everything is overbuilt.(Yes!)It has plenty of power to spin up large cutters for panel raising and making rail and stile doors. It is very smooth, almost no vibration.

The fence and safety system take a little getting used to, but are quite effective.(Okay, I don't use all the safety shields because they sometimes get in the way.)

I have only two complaints about this machine:

One of my extension wings is not perfectly straight.(Can't get that thing level with the main table to save my life!)

The overload switch on my machine was set wrong. It stopped working on the third use.All that was required was opening the power switch assembly and turning a screw - not a big deal fortunately.

Overall I am very happy with this machine and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bit more than a simple router table.

(Oh yeah, hope you are handy with electrical wiring because you will need a 240V outlet to run this beast.) ... Read more

Senco SFN40K 15-Gauge Finish Nailer with Case

    Editorial Review

Senco has an unparalleled reputation when it comes to finishnailers, and this model is just another reason why. It's lightweightand so comfortable, but it packs awesome power, firing 1-1/4- to2-1/2-inch nails through whatever you put in front of it. The pros likethis product because of its angled magazine, which eliminates the needfor bodily contortions in tight spots. The nailer's great balance andrubber grip make its 4.7 pounds feel much lighter. And if you've everruined a workpiece because your nailer spat oil on it, you'll lovethis: the SFN40K has a Neverlube design--it requires no oil--so you'llnever have to lube it and it won't stain your work. It also has a greatline of sight, a dual-action trigger, an adjustable depth-of-drivecontrol for exact countersinking (and no troublesome overshooting), anda nonmarring nose pad. Yes, it is more expensive than some otherbrands, but you're definitely getting what you pay for here. --KrisJensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs refinement to be 5 star nailer.
Let's say that this nailer works very well as everyone states. I say that my Porter Cable grip has a far better feel and will last ten times longer than the cheap foam/rubber grip that is glued around the handle of this SFN40.
So why did they skip the deflection on the exhaust on this top rated nailer?I may be able to deflect it, but it appears that I have to take four allen screws out of it to turn the deflector.Porter Cable has the right idea when they made theirs 360 degree rotatable on the fly. Then ask Senco why they skipped the air inlet connector that Porter has supplied and mounted on their product. Then they skipped over supplying the Allen keys to take the thing apart, not so for Porter Cable. Port Cable also supplied some nails with the gun, and in a better designed case. I'm not telling anyone to buy the Porter Cable finish nailer, but I am telling Senco to shape up. I do appreciate that the Senco SFN40 works well, but first impression was that I should have bought another Porter Cable. Anyone that complains about oil getting on their work is using too much of it. I never get a drop of oil anywhere but in the gun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Finish Nailer I have
I have been using this nailer very heavily during the last several years and it has never misfired or jammed once. The 2.5" nails really seem to have a lot of holding power as well. The clear rubber tip on the nailer keeps your work from being marred. Very nice unit and I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars No comparison
I own the SFN40K and just purchased a second one, Senco Finish pro 35 and they are the greatest.Light weight, no jam ups.Adjustable exhaust is also nice feature.
Purchased a Master Fastner 15 gauge nailer last year.Unbelievable, never worked, Woodworkers Warehouse stopped selling them and Master of course left no fowarding address or telephone number.Must have sailed away on the boat named

    Editorial Review

One of the first companies to design plate joiners, DeWalt makes one powerful slot-cutting tool. Some people argue that joiners are joiners, and while it's true that a slot is a slot, how you cut it makes a heck of a lot of difference. What impresses us about DeWalt's plate joiner is the stout, dual rack-and-pinion fence. Operating with striking smoothness, the fence locks tightly in place and ensures that the joiner's blade and fence are always parallel--which means accurate joints every time. The DeWalt is also the only plate joiner on the market with a fully adjustable tilt fence: the face plate tilts 0 to 90 degrees, so you can join work at whatever angle the job requires (22-1/2 degrees, say, if you're working in octagons). Cabinetmakers will appreciate the convenience of being able to make flush cuts at 0 degrees without having to remove the fence. The 6-1/2 amp motor spins the tool's carbide blade at 10,000 rpm, making remarkably quick, clean cuts. We found the gauges easy to read and easy to set, a big plus (there's nothing worse than wrestling with or squinting at a tool every time you make adjustments). DeWalt's joiner also has preset stops for all common biscuit sizes and there's a handy vacuum adapter that allows you to hook up suction to keep dust in the shop to a minimum--always a good idea. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars best choice for moderate use
I won't bore you with repeating the specs or features of the biscuit joiner as the other reviews cover them quite well. I've had this tool for about 6 months now and am delighted with it. I had the porter cable model which is quite a bit more expensive. I found it to be bulkier to use than the DeWalt and a lot more likely to slip away from your alignment marks than the DeWalt. This cutter has pins on both sides of the blade that go a long way to help keeping the cutter in line with the wood.. The only drawback is that the dust chute will clog with the dust bag installed when cutting into long grained softwoods.
Having owned both the porter cable and the Dewalt I must give a big nod to the DeWALT. Smaller and easier to use and a few $$ less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprise, suprise
Just received my DW682K.Opened the main shipping box and I was plesantly suprised to find a box of 1000 Porter Cable assorted biscuits. Then I opened the actual Joiner case, and found a set of four Dewalt wood chisels inside in it's own handy carrying case. There was no mention of either of these in the product writeup.Haven't plugged it in yet, but for $149.00, free shipping, and my added "bonuses", how can I go wrong? Not sure if everyone has or is going to get the extras, but I'm one happy camper right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate First Time, Every Time

Delta 36-844 "Limited Edition" 3 HP Left Tilt Unisaw with 50" Biesemeyer Fence
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $2,800.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches.

The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch.

This model comes with a 50-inch commercial Biesemeyer fence system andaccompanying table board. While the basics of this popular fence design have beencopied by competing saw and fence manufacturers, there's still nothing quite like theoriginal. The Biesemeyer is made of the heaviest gauge steel we've seen on a T-squaretype fence, and the fence face itself is made of laminated 9-ply Finland birch, gluedsolidly in place--a construction method that eliminates warpage in the fence line that thebolts or screws used in competing systems can cause. The fence locks to the front guiderail using Biesemeyer's three-point locking system and automatically aligns the fenceparallel to the blade when the lever is tightened down, providing reliable accuracy everytime. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much the perfect table saw
Let me start off by saying that this is the last table saw you will ever own.It is powerful, smooth and solid as a rock (it weights just slight less than a sizeable boulder).Put a Forrest Woodworker II blade on it and you will get cuts so smooth you could probably sell your jointer.

Assembly is a bit of a chore, the direction could be better and the extension fence could be easier to mount to the saw.Plan on investing a good portion of an afternoon to get it together. However, once you do, hitting the on/off switch that first time will make you glad you made the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!
I am the envy of my woodworking friends! ;-)
This thing rocks. Solid and powerfull, this thing handles everything I've thrown at it. The accessories that came with it are great, as well. And the Biesemeyer fence is fantastic! Having the rolling base is a plus, as well. On the downside, it was tough to put it all together because it is HEAVY and there are many parts. Plus, the bags that held all of the screws fell apart so I spent some time just sorting the screws, washers, nuts, etc into piles. Things would have been much easier with an extra set of hands - especially when installing the cast iron extensions. But, once it's all in place, aligned and square it is fantastic!

4-0 out of 5 stars difficult set up but works well
If I could rate the saw in different categories I would give it 3 stars for the set up and 5 stars for its performance. Here are some of the problems I had.I couldn't easily tell which cast iron extension wing went on the left and which on the right. The wings aren't marked. After researching and analyzing the picture in the manuals in great detail I finally figured out that the left one has a countersunk screw hole in it.Also two of the pretapped holes in the guide tube were misaligned. This wasn't that big a deal because there are a bunch of other holes in the guide tube to use to attach to the front rail.In general there are a lot of holes in the rails and no explicit directions about where they should line up with the cast iron tables. This was easy to address but still mildly irritating.By holding the rails to the table and sliding it left or right I could figure out where to align it.One major objection I have is that the Z bracket system isn't used to attach the extension table to the cast iron wing in the Biesenmeyer model. It's used for the Unifence model. It would really simplify the stabilization and attachment of the extension table. It was a struggle to attach the extension table. In order to align the extension table flush to the cast iron table one person has to hold the extension table up while another one clamps it together. But the underside of the wings and table don't have a convenient surface to clamp together so it ended being misaligned a lot.I eventually just put a long clamp across the table, essentially squeezing the front and back rail against the extension table which held it in place. So the assembly was irritating but it's just a minor inconvenience.Another issue I had was the side extension table is substantially shorter than the one pictured on the box and in the manual. It barely was long enough to get the 50" distance from the saw blade.I was impressed that the Biesenmeyer face was absolutely parallel to the saw blade right out of the box. Also I was pleasantly suprised that the witness line on the fence was only 1/16" off.I think Delta does a good job in aligning things properly at the factory.Overall it was a frustrating set up but the blade/fence are parallel, the table top is flat and stable which is what really matters to me.I didn't go to the lengths that other reviews did in checking the flatness of the cast iron surface. All I did was put a straight edge on the table top and adjusted things to keep the surfaces flush. If your livelihood depended on it I guess such minute differences would matter but I'm a DIY/woodworking hobbiest. ... Delta 28-299A "Limited Edition" 14" Band Saw with Mobile Base, Dust Connectors, and Rip Fence
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

Whether replicating trim for an old Victorian house or resawing four-by stock to build furniture, Delta's made-in-the-USA 14-inch band saw is striking for its overall smart design. For starters, the saw's 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor delivers impressive power, smoothly and quietly, so it's perfect for curve cutting, but the saw isn't going to bog down when ripping hardwoods, either. The saw's nine-spoke wheels deliver more accurate tension on the blade, minimizing vibration. The heavy-duty cast-iron trunnions likewise minimize vibration to the blade. The lower blade guide on this saw rests only 3/4 inch below the table, which greatly reduces deflection in the blade and provides cleaner cuts. The large 14-by-14-inch table provides plenty of support for workpieces. The smart features don't stop there. The saw's adjustment knobs are large and easy to operate. The hinged pulley cabinet makes it easy to access the wheel for blade adjustments and changes. The closed base reduces noise and keeps dust off the motor. To cap it off, the saw comes with fantastic extras, including a rip fence, for resawing, and a mobile base--an absolutely indispensable accessory for a woodworker with a small shop. A 1/4-inch platinum pro blade and4-inch and 2-inch dust connectors are also included. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

I ordered this saw from Amazon. It arrived in about a week.Everything was packed securely and there was no damage or dings or scratches on the bandsaw.Assembly was very simple and straight forward.Machine runs pretty well except for mild vibration even after adjustment/tune-up.I replaced the belt witha PowerTwist belt with mild improvement. The mobile base is excellent and very sturdy.Overall, I am happy with the saw, except for the following:

1.The dust collection assembly is a piece of plastic that is held in place with a small clip.Very cheaply made dust collection system and does not work well.

2.The rip fence which is made out of aluminum is not flatvertically and I can not get it to sit 90 degrees with the table.I am planning to contact Delta to get a new fence.

3.The bandsaw wheels were out of plane when arrived from the factory, but this can be adjusted.

The saw itself is nothing less than I expected from Delta. I received my 28-299A in 4 days; it went together well and runs flawlessly. My only complaint is with the unbelieveably cheap, plastic dust connector. It is thin and held in place with a spring clip which falls open in use because of the weight of the 4 inch adapter and collector hose. What on earth were the Delta design engineers thinking when they decided this was an acceptable feature for this saw? I have used the saw extensively and found guide blocks and thrust bearings very easy to adjust without tools. The blade tracks perfectly even after hours of continuous use. Come on Delta...improve the dust collection and make it equal in quality to the rest of the machine!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, the OOGLY..
The Good - made in USA, good fit/finish, quality materials.Overall, better materials than my Jet jointer.

The Bad - table was not flat (off by about 1/16th).I called Delta, the lady was clueless, thought I was talking about the width measurements...She did, however send me a new table.

The OOGLY - replacement table arrived, it is more warped than the original! Also in this category, the saw vibrates more than I would like. And the dust collector is useless; I replaced it with a flat, 6x6 adapter (4") by cutting two slots in the top of the adapter and adding a screw to hold the bottom.Works great with an 1100 cfm collection system.

Also, I installed the riser, but had some difficulty with the alignment pins - they are very soft, and don't fit that well.I finally had to file them down to get the riser installed.

Overall, not terribly impressed with this product. ... Read more

So small, so light, but so powerful-—what a delight to use. It's just perfect for the professional upholsterer and the home do-it-yourselfer, too. Because it's so compact, it fits nicely into tight spaces, and its super light weight means no fatigue, even in the awkward positions upholsters can find themselves. We didn't experience any misfires or jams, but if they happen, just release the magazine and the driver blade guide retracts. We like the convenience of the end-load magazine, and because the staples are so thin, you get an impressive 185 loaded in the magazine, which of course means fewer stops to reload. And just like Porter-Cable's more ambitious nailers, this one's got a directional port to keep the exhaust off you and your workpiece. While it's in name an upholstery stapler, we think you'll find a lot more uses for this little worker.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where to get staples
This gun is very comparable to other industrial upholstery staplers in features, design and quality, but it is considerably less expensive.

Since this is an upholstery stapler you can get staples from any upholstery supply shop.A hardware store will not carry them. When you go to your local upholstery supply shop ask for staples compatible with Empire 7, BeA 71, Bostitch BA71, JK 670, Rainco 7, or Senco C series staplers.Amazon's price for replacement staples is good considering they are galvanized, but you can get liquor finish staples cheaper at your local store. Many will carry stainless steel staples as well.

This stapler does not come with a case because it is an industrial tool.Upholstery shops do not bother putting their tools in boxes at the end of the day. Also upholstery shops don't make a lot of saw dust, at least not in the fabric part of the shop. For those using this stapler in a general purpose shop, a case would be nice but, as mentioned, one is not provided. The parts list mentions an optionally available case which can be purchased from your local factory service center for less than ten bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best little upholstery strapler
I own both hand and electric staplers but none of them compare to this air-powered stapler. I am in the business of making wooden cornice boards and have found stapling material to the boards much more easily using this tool than my other staplers. In addition I can get into tight spots with this stapler that I could not get into with my other staplers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who do they think they are?
It is the height of arrogance (and stupidity) to make router bits without showing their size on them! All you get is a 5-digit part number and a big Freud logo! How do I tell if this is 9- or 7-degree dovtail bit! If this wasn't a Christmas gift, it would be going right back. And then I tried one of their bits and it was undersized. Don't go for the name try somebody else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Undersized
I have many Freud bits and saw blades. I have always been very happy with their products. Recently I added an Incra LS17 super systemto my shop. Because of my past experience with Freud products, I purchased the Freud 8 piece set for Incra Jig. Much to my surprise both straight cut bits in the set were undersized, and produced unacceptable box joints using Incra scales. I returned the set and replaced them with CMT which work well.

    Editorial Review

For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines, including this one to the tune of almost $2400.Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts.Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw.I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99.I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation.I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine For the Money
You cant really go wrong here with this mortise machine.I read all the reviews prior to buying this machine about the shipping damage and was holding my breath hopeing mine would make it in one piece but I have to say the packing could use some work. The cast iron base was cracked about 4 inches when it arrived.I called Jet and they sent one out UPS ground right away with no problems. The only other problem I found with the machine is the fence is not straight. Its off about 3/16 inch or better on alignment due to the hole not being bored straight through the body of the machine during manufacture.I cut some really nice mortise joints through some red oak and the machine works very good. The bits that came with it are very sharp and seem to function great.Would have gave it 5 stars if not for the fence problem. All in all not bad for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the hobbyist
I've built several projects with this mortiser over the past year.It has done a great job.The stop mechanism works great, it's sturdy, and the chisels that come with it are plenty sharp.I've built about 4 tables with this machine, and I am currently building a cabinetmaker's bench, which requires me to bore mortises about 3 inches deep.Since I am using poplar for my base it didn't bog down the motor like maple would, however, the base wasn't wide enough to accomodate the large legs.No biggie:Rockler sells an extension table for this model that I am considering buying.

I wish they would have included mounting hardware (like my Delta drill press), so that I could mount it without any further trips to the hardware store. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If your projects require you to drill with big bits or if you find yourself attempting to drill with precision under questionable circumstances, this heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will help you get out of your, um, hole. Running off a 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts, it gives you an impressive deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches and holds up to 5/8-inch-diameter bits. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column give it the industrial feel and durability we look for in this type of tool. You'll enjoy the rotating work base--which bevels, of course, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles--as well as the depth stop that can be set quickly and easily with microadjustments and a locking mechanism, great for repetitive drilling. While other models sometimes place hard-to-read speed and belt charts under the top cap, Delta uses a wide, clearly legible chart to explain how to configure the belts for each of 16 speeds (215 to 2,720 rpm). And, thanks to the smooth, cool-running induction motor inside, you're not likely to find yourself shopping for a drill press again for an extremely long time. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine
I recently purchased the Delta 17-965 based on comments and several reviews in magazines. I must say I'm very pleased. This machine runs smooth and fairly quietly. It appears well made with a fine fit and finish. The measured runout, to the best of my abilities, appears to be about .002" on the chucked drill bit's shaft. I found it on sale in the tool crib catalog cheaper than the JET, with which I bought a magnetic base lamp. This drill press will probably outlive me. Its always nice knowing you'll never have to replace a peice of equipment again.

    I highly recommend this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool
I've used this tool a lot since purchasing it last Nov. I've had no problem with it. Be sure and have help in lifting the head up onto the column, strong and tall help is best. My only complaint is the plastic belt cover tends to vibrate. If the resulting hum could be eliminated, it would be a very quiet machine. It's not real loud, just an annoyance which I should be able to fix in some way. Nicely finished and easily adjusted. The depth stop is a great improvement over what has been the "norm" in the past. Quick, tool less adjustment which stays put.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Before Buying
I ordered the Delta 17-965 from Amazon which was suppose to come with a mail in offer for a mortising kit. Imagine my surprise when I did not receive the paperwork for the mail in offer and I learned from Amazon that the offer was a misprint which they would not honor. To make matter worse they want to charge me return shipping which is almost $400! Think twice and buy locally. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Senco air-powered tools are famous for their durability and features, and this finish stapler is no exception. The PowerPlus SLS20 is incredibly powerful yet surprisingly lightweight; combining an ergonomic design and a soft grip, it's also exceptionally easy to handle. Its magazine has the capacity to hold 168 18-gauge, 3/8- to 1-1/2-inch staples. We appreciate the adjustable depth-of-drive control that allows for precise countersinking, an especially important feature for furniture assembly. This stapler is also excellent for working on molding, trim, underlayment, soffits, and crafts. Safety is a chief concern with pneumatic staplers, and Senco pneumatic products include impressive safety features. A no-mar safety and restrictive trigger reduce the chances of accidental firings. The bottom-load magazine has a smart design, including a molded lever that keeps the magazine from accidentally opening. There's also a clear sight hole so you can check on the staple supply. Of course, only a well-maintained tool is a safe tool, and Senco designed the PowerPlus SLS20 with this in mind: this stapler never needs lubrication and has only one moving seal, resulting in virtually trouble-free operation. --Tom Kasperson ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Bit of a disappointment
I own a Senco FP25XP brad nailer and have been extremely satisfied with it - so when I decided to purchase a narrow crown stapler, I chose Senco again. My two options were the SLS20 (this one) or the SKS-L.The SLS20 was less expensive and reviewers here gave it good ratings so I ordered the SLS20.

When I received it, however, I was a bit disappointed. The cushion grip is not moulded like on the FP25, but is a piece of foam rubber wrapped around the handle and glued. And because of the way it's wrapped, it's unconfortable in your hand.Probably won't take very long before it begins to come unglued and looks all ratty.

The second disappointment was that the unit will not drive one inch staples into maple - it leaves the head proud by about 1/16.I checked the pressure on my compressor and it's in spec. The unit will drive 3/4 inch staples into maple.

The third disappointment was that the unit did not come with a case, even though Amazon advertises it as shipping with a case.

The fourth disappointment was when I found the SLS20 at a much lower price at a major home improvement store.

Overall, I'd recommend buying the SKS-L, or if you can tolerate the reduced power, go with a lower priced Senco stapler.

I returned the SLS20 and ordered the SKS-L.While the SKS-L has its own problems, it does have the power that the SLS20 is lacking.

A great carpenter once referred to sawdust as "the indomitable scourge silently mounting in woodshops nationwide." Well, now you can fight back with Jet's 1,100 cfm dust collector. Running a powerful 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor on either 115 or 230 volts, this handy shop tool comes standard with 7.36-cubic-foot bags that collect particles 30 microns and larger. The thickness of the 12-inch steel blower wheel is great for handling larger particle-producing applications. As is standard on most models, two 4-inch dust ports feed into a main 6-inch tube, allowing you to connect it to multiple machines. For convenience, Jet has placed the entire unit on easy-to-roll casters, so it can be moved around the shop when necessary. One unique feature separating Jet's dust collector from the competition is how easily the lower bag can be removed and reattached. The bag is held securely in place by a flexible metal band, so it pops in and out without the hassle of cinch straps you'll find on other models. Standing 96 inches tall and pulling 5.34 cubic feet of air, this machine is perfect for medium-to-large shops. 2-0 out of 5 stars MOTOR IS A NO GO....
Purchased this tool March 2, 2002.I have it hooked up on a garage dust collection system with standard blast gates. It pulled fairly well and I really enjoyed using it.I think I may have emptied the bag 5 or 6 times so I would't say it was used extensivly. The motor recently shorted out just past it's 2 1/2 year.I couldn't figure out why, but it did.The warranty only lasts 2 years and to replace the motor cost approx. 3/4 the cost of the new unit.Needless to say, I didn't replace the motor and ended up buying a Powermatic 75.Maybe its just bad luck, but I find the Powermatic products to be better built and worth the extra money. No more Jet products of me...I just hope that Jet doesn't change the Powermatics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Chip Collector.
The Unit was easy to assemble.I had trouble finding the base which turned out to be at the bottom of the box.It was bent, and it is not a thin gauge either. With a great deal of effort I half bent it back into shape. The rest of the assembly went well.I wired it for 250V as per the manual and plugged it in and turned it on.KRRRRRRRRUUUUUNNNNNNNK.Ouch! A loud noise caused me to immediately turn it off. After double checking the wiring I realized that the manual had the incorrect wiring diagram for 250V and that there was a correct diagram on the motor itself.Nice unit, professional paint, fit and finish. It is not quiet but does collect dust and chips pretty well.I will invest in a 5 micron bag next.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quiet? Not Mine.
I don't think this tool can be described as "Quiet". Yes. It has less noise than my ear piercing Ridgid shop vaccume, but I wouldn't call it quiet. I am not sure how can you do a normal conversation with this machine on. I have two other problems. The top bag has dusk leaking at the sealing and lower bag is very difficult to remove.

Whether you're a beginning woodworker or you just want a well-designed tool for space-stingy environs, this minilathe from Jet is a great choice. Using the same design as their larger equipment, Jet completely encloses the 1/2-horsepower induction motor for long life and protection against dust and debris. Six speeds, from 500 to 3,975 rpm, and a removable safety toggle switch ensure you get the correct rotation when you want it and none when you don't. The heavy-duty cast-iron construction greatly reduces vibrations and aids in stability with the durable steel components for years of use. Unlike some other manufacturers, Jet includes a live center and a 3-inch faceplate so you won't have to upgrade soon after purchase.

With 14 inches of workspace between centers and 10 inches of swing over the bed, this minilathe provides plenty of room for learning to make pens, letter openers, and small bowls. I was going to write a review of the Bessey cabinet clamps but I read what Alan Freedman said and I couldn't have said it better. So, to use Alan Freedman's comments (which I totally agree with)....

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THEM: These are best clamps for squaring up a cabinet side/face frame ever. They work great standing up on a workbench. I consider them an invaluable part of my woodworking shop.

THE OTHER STUFF: These are not the end all. I still use my jorgenson clamps a lot. They apply point pressure (versus even pressure across the face of the clamp) which can be useful for truing up some jobs and clamping some irregular surfaces. The Bessey clamps are pretty heavy which can be ackward when clamping with one hand (and using the other hand to hold the project together).

THE BOTTOM LINE: You can never have too many clamps. I would not have less than a pair of the Bessey clamps in my shop. Four are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars these are great clamps
My only complaint is the price, but you get your money's worth. I plan to pick up a few more of these sometime in the future. The faces give you square pressure against the stock, which I find really important for edge gluing and cabinet building. I keep a little pressure on the heads for storage. The one time I did not I rotated the clamp head vertically and the clamp body slid down pinching my hand on the way down.

My husband has been using his grandfather's pipe clamps for years. After doing extensive research, he finally decided to invest in some Bessey's.Needless to say, it's made his woodworking pasttime even more enjoyable. In fact, he liked these so well that he bought a second, identical set. These clamps are well worth the money! ... Editorial Review

Are expensive router bits worth the cost? Because of the features found in these Freud bits--long-lasting micrograin carbide/titanium tips, tri-metal brazing, and an antikickback design-- our answer is a resounding yes. Each Freud bit is computer-balanced to run vibration- and chatter-free at speeds well in excess of the typical 22,000 rpm of most routers. These bits have a high shear angle that produces less tear-out and chatter marks, leaving a cross-grained cut that requires little or no sanding. Multiaxis grinding helps ensure the proper relief angle on cutting edges regardless of how the bit is oriented. These bits--intended for use in cabinet production at less cost than a shaper head--are designed with a 1/2-inch shank for use on table-mounted portable routers. In our tests, they cut smooth and clean on all composition materials, plywood, and hard and soft woods. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One more thing....
The large review written here, really covered all of the bases. The one more thing worth mentioning, is that Freud sells the larger more popluar 1 1/2" reveal in a set, which has the 3 1/2" bit to make it, plus the stile and rail set. They come in different part numbers starting with 97-So two of them for example are 97-100, and 97-104. Be sure your router base is at least 3 5/8" to accept them.
It does not include the glue up joint bit, or the drawer lock bit. The glue up joint bit is great for mating a number of panels. Avoids the lip of one or more boards sitting a little proud, that is frequently a problem. It is not a problem, if you have a very large sanding station, belt or drum, you can send a complete door through and get all of the surfaces even. For the rest of us, a glue up bit is just what the doctor ordered. What happens is that you run the bit in adjoining pieces. One piece is run face up, then next is run face down. Then the two mate together perfectly, as long as you have the registration set proplerly. When the boards are clamped-compressed together, they line up. The other thing is the drawer lock bit, which gives you the drawer front, by (rabbetting) the back of the drawer front, including and edge lip which is beneficial to ensure a clean close.
Freud bits are superior in the job they do. They leave a clean finish on the work, and saves a lot of time not having to sand out imperfections. All in all this is a very nice set. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Router Bit Set--Here is Some Info toHelp You
This is fine set--strong, well-made, sharp, and packaged in a handsome wood storage box.Well worth the price.Only negative for me is the reveal on the panel raising bit wasn't quite the size I would have liked.

Here are some points that may prove helpful to you.

A.The description doesn't identify the five bits. They are from left to right in the picture 1) a bit for mating edges of boards for glue-ups 2) the panel raising bit, 3) a door lip bit--for making center panel lips that overhand rails and stiles, 4 and 5) a matched pair for cutting rails and stiles. If you are doing raised panels 2), 4) and 5) are the bits that count.

B.The set comes with a helpful how-to booklet. It is first rate. But, alongside the picture of the five bits on page 6 is a caption that misidentifies the five. The order is wrong.Left to right the bits shown are actually panel raiser, rail cutter, stile cutter, glue joint and door lip.

C.The panel raising bit will produce a relief of 3/4" (excluding the 3/8" that recesses into the rail and stile grooves). That's less than the more common 1-1 1/2" reveals on many kitchen cabinet doors. It turned out to be very acceptable for my rather small doors (20"x20"), but it may or may not be what you need or want.

D.You absolutely need to use a router/shaper table. The panel raising bit has a 2 1/2" diameter, so you need no less than a 3" throat opening.

E.The bits all worked fine on my 2 HP variable speed router--using red oak stock. (Variable speed helps a lot and is probably a must.)

F.You will want to make practice cuts on scrap, back up end cuts with waste stock to minimize tear-out, use a safety guard on the router/shaper table--along with safety glasses and use hold-downs to secure work pieces as they pass through the bit.

The raised panel doors were fun to make and they look splendid.Good luck with yours! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior Bits
I'm not really sure what foozleface was talking about.I had a project where I needed to bore a 3/4" hole through the end-grain of hard maple, which is significantly harder on a bit than edge grain.Upon the recommendation of a 30-year master woodworker, I purchased the Freud forstner bits.He told me that Freud was the best and I haven't been able to prove him wrong.I drilled through that maple like butter.Freud sold me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get carbide
The 1/2 inch bit blunted on the first use while trying to make it through an inch of maple. Not a little bit blunted, but to the point where I discarded the bit - all the edges were absolutely round. Go for carbide. - revised 3/8/02 - I was running the damn thing backwards in the drill, and burned it! Stupid move. However, I'd still recommend carbide. HSS bits can lose temper, carbide - not so much. These bad boys can get pretty hot in a drill press, and if you turn 'em blue, you burned it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Wood Boring Bits
For precision holes the best bits are forstner bits. If you work with wood like I do than you want the best. These bits will not chip your wood like other bits. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is a very well written and laid out book. The information is relevant, concise, and most of all, helpful. The author writes in a way that makes it easy to follow along and the photos and drawings help even more when specific things are discussed. I was able to read this book in a few hours because not only is it written well, but I was learning so much I just continued to read until I flipped the last page. This book should be owned (not just read because if you own it you can refer back to it at any time) by every novice woodworker and perhaps even anyone else who works with woodworking machines. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a Table Saw?This should be the Manual.
My Table Saw was new in 1948 when my Grandfather bought it.I grew up around it and you would think I knew my Saw, right?

After reading The Table Saw Book, I have done many Tunings and Upgrades, I haveMade many Jigs, I Have much more safely enjoyed many hours with my Saw and gotten the best results ever, thanks to this book.My 47 year old Table Saw has features that many modern Saws sold today still don't have, thanks to this book. And at the price of Lumber today, can you afford not to have the best running Table Saw you can get?'

The best Running Table Saw may be the Saw you already own.The only thing it lacks is what you will learn from and do after you read this book.Keep it handy in the Shop

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent--when combined with De Christoforo's Book
Excellent book for everything from purchasing, using, and maintaining your saw--including extensive references to safety.

Color photographs are clear, sharp, and very detailed, and Mehler's writing is sure and firm without being overly preachy The references to European saws do get tiresome (as one other reviewer has noted), especially since the majority of the photos in the book are of US-made equipment. Not many Saturday wood butchers or even serious amateurs can afford two thousand dollars and up for European saws.

While 20 years older and only using B&W photos, R.J. De Christoforo's book by the same name is still fairly current and has far more detail for the serious woodworker. The section on saw blades alone is more than 20 pages and contains valuable information that is missing from Mehler's book.

Buy both. You'll be glad you did. ... Read more

Delta 31-780X Boss Bench Oscillating Spindle Sander
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Delta Boss, like all spindle sanders, is designed specifically for sanding curved and scrolled material. The large 18-inch cast-iron worktable proved steady support for all of our test material, and this Delta has an especially versatile 1/2-inch spindle that accommodates sanding drums from the 3/4-inch standard all the way up to 3 inches in diameter. A unique feature of this Delta sander is the oscillating spindle that moves at 60 strokes per minute to help remove material quickly and with less heat buildup. Predrilled holes allow quick mounting to benchtops and, at only 45 pounds, the machine is fully portable. Like most Delta shop tools, this sander features an integral dust-collection fan and bag. We especially appreciate Delta's removable on/off switch that protects children and the unwary from accidentally starting the machine. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the Buck
I bought the BOSS after the price dropped and I have been extremely happy with it's versatility. You get a [...] Spindle kit free to get started and the different sizes of spindles are readily available almost everywhere (unlike my Jet power tools). The vibration is a lot less than I expected making it very easy to shape wood rough cut shapes from my scroll saw and my table saw.

    One of Delta's better efforts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sander works well and extra spindle set great value.
Sander works great but, dust bag is hard to get on and off. The extra spindle set you get is all the sizes they make for sander that is not included with standard sander. Extra set comes with drums and one sanding drum per rubber drum. Great value because, at a national hardware store they will charge you [alot] for just the sander plus ... extra spindle set which is encluded at amazon for nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smooth Operator
The Boss Bench Oscillating Sander is a smooth, quiet operation, with hardly, if any, vibration. The cast iron table provides an adequate work surface and great support and stability of the workpiece.I did not have any trouble with the spindle being square to the table. This sander works wonders on the curved and scrollsawed pieces, with no burning of the edges, and a smooth finish.

The dust collection system works okay. The dust port is an odd size, 1.5", but the dust collection fan blades built into the base of the spindle draws the dust down from the table into the bag.The bag is a little tricky to install, but once it is installed, it works great.

The only negative I have, and thus only 4 stars, is the fact there is not a spindle lock. This makes changing the spindles not as easy as it should be.I have created my own "spindle lock" by placing the allen wrench in between the dust collection fan blades and the dust port, this "locks" the spindle in place while I change out the spindle sleeves.I'm sure this is not good for the fan blades, but it works, so far.

A great running machine, has met all my expectations and then some for edge sanding curved pieces. It has a permanent place on my work bench !! ... Read more
