    Editorial Review

This saw lives up to Powermatic's reputation for ruggedconstruction and unrivaled performance. The cast-iron tabletop and itstwo wings are ground to a mirror-like finish with amazing accuracy inflatness. One thing we've always liked about Powermatic's saws is theleft-tilting arbor. Tilting the blade to the left--away from thefence--eliminates the need for a sacrificial fence and reduces the riskof the piece binding under the blade. This package includes a 30-inchAccu-Fence, famous for its precision and ease of use, making each jobgo faster. This fence length is perfect for the home shop where spaceis an issue and big projects are less common. An interior springapplies constant pressure when not locked down, which takes the slopout of fence movement, improving speed and accuracy. It also hasreplaceable sides with easy-access screws. Users can adjust the sidesso close to the tabletop that laminates will not slip underneath.Initial setup should go faster now that Powermatic has made it easierto align the fence rails parallel to the tabletop. Another advantage isthe longer bar of the T-slot miter gauge, which allows users tocrosscut wider stock. Overall, Powermatic table saws are top qualityand built to the tightest tolerances in the industry. --NancyGleason ... Read more

    3-0 out of 5 stars Good Saw....but
The good things about this saw: It's easy to assemble (one person can assemble alone), it's powerful, the table is ground to precision, and, for the most part, assembly instructions are good.

The bad things about this saw: The worst feature is the only part made in the USA...the Accu-Fence. Neither the original fence nor the replacement fence I received are acceptable. Secondly, the arbor gearing inside the saw very quickly gums up with sawdust affecting the ease of blade height adjustment. Thirdly, you can simply throw away the dust collection plate since you will collect virtually no sawdust in your vac system.

This saw certainly beats my old Craftsman, but it's definitely not a 5 star piece of equipment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from long-time owner
I've been reading the reviews of this saw while out on the road for work and I'd like to offer my two-cents worth.I've had my Powermatic saw since 1998, purchased from Tool Crib which was an actual entity way back when.My saw has performed admirably through thick and thin with few exceptions. Those annoyances have already been addressed, but I'll list mine anyway. My belt guard rattled and whined until I removed it.Vibration was reduced with a link belt.I removed the blade guard/splitter assembly. After I hacked up a bunch of hickory scrap, I chucked the cheap blade.Put the saw on an HTC mobile base, man did that make my life easier. I also installed an aftermarket router table extension wing (Bench Dog)to the left side that fit flawlessly.Probably the most significant concern was blade alignment.Mine was almost 1/16 out.I loosened the two bolts on back side and whacked the arbor with a mallet and wood block. It moved easily into alignment.I have used this saw to cut 12/4 walnut, maple, cherry, mahogany etc.I only bogged the motor down once cutting green 12/4 hickory.I have no regrets whatsoever purchasing this saw and have recommended it to all my woodworking friends. They too have purchased this saw and all have been satisfied.Next month though, I'm moving up to a 66.Just built a new "garage"...at least that's what my wife calls it.More room equals bigger tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great saw - worth the investment!
I had researched this saw for quite some time, looking at Powermatic, Jet, Delta, etc. to upgrade from the bench top saw that I have been using for the last 10 years.

I settled on the Powermatic as I wanted a left tilt saw that was under $1,000, and I wanted a saw that would last.Powermatic ( combined with the rebate from WMH tools ) was the choice.

Assembly time for the saw was about 5 hours.Take your time, and plan on making some minor adjustments. The saw weighs 300+ pounds, and it has been bounced around in the box all the way from Taiwan.

The stand went together well, and the saw is sitting on a Shop Fox mobile base with extension.

I spent an additional 2 hours making minor adjustments. You could do it in less time...my philosophy is that I will do these adjustments ONCE...so I took extra time and paid extra attention to each one.

The most crucial adjustment is the miter slot to the blade - mine was off by .035 inches....so I loosened the trunion and brought it into line ( instructions are in the back of the manual ).

The 45 and 90 stops were on, and I spent extra time making sure the motor and pulleys lined up.What I found worked well as a straight edge was a 2.5-foot section of T-Track.

I converted the saw to 220V... runs great and puts the maximum power to the belt / arbor. This was very easy to do... instructions are in the manual and on the motor housing.

The saw runs smooth with the stock belt, but I am upgrading it with a 3/8" Power Twist link belt.It passes the nickel test on startup with the stock belt though - I just want it to run whisper smooth.

Dust collection is pretty good, but I will make a cover plate from 1/4 plywood to seal up most of the back.

I cleaned up the wings using WD-40 ( soak for 5 minutes ), wipe with paper towels; spray and wipe again;spray with 409 and wipe the top off, and then give it a good rub with paste wax.The surface is flat, smooth, and wood glides right over it.

I upgraded the fence with an INCRA TS-LS...that fence is hands down the best I have found.I have always planned on upgrading any saw that I purchased with the INCRA fence.I set mine pretty far to the right for a 42" rip capacity ( using 6' rails ).The fence took an additional 3 hours to attach to the saw and adjust.

My miter gauge is an INCRA 1000 SE...again - really well put together and accurate.

I am running Freud blades on my saw -24, 50, and 80 teeth.....very smooth cuts.

So - I spent 10+ hours putting this together...I took my time and I am very happy with this machine. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bosch builds good saws. This 10-inch sliding compound miter saw has the smooth, easy-to-control action we demand in a slider. This saw's built burly, too--here's a slider that looks likely to survive a tumble off the back of a pickup truck (not that we tested it). The blade guard has good action and retracts well, so visibility and motion aren't restricted when cutting and there's no danger of it binding or sticking. The grip is contoured and tapered for the human hand, no matter the size--but there is a safety switch that makes this saw difficult to use left-handed. Bosch has also cleverly mounted the important wrenches and keys on the body of the saw (exactly the sort of attention to detail that makes toolhounds happy). We tip our hardhats to the good people at Bosch; they've made a great saw. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch rocks
Personally, I think woodworkers around the country should trade in their power tools for credit and replace them all with Bosch.
I started using bosch tools over 12 years ago in a furniture shop, and my first experience with their tools was a jigsaw, which apparently has since reached legendary status.
This particular jigsaw was thoroughly abused every day for years. We'd burn through all the sears brand stuff, replacing them every few months, but the Bosch tools only needed the occasional cleaning and replacement blade.
I saw first hand the kind of torture Bosch tools could withstand and have been a devoted fan ever since.
In addtionl to the durabiltiy inherent in nearly ALL their tools, i've also found them to be highly ACCURATE, which is absolutely required when crafting furniture.
This particular tool carries on the long tradition of high quality, tough, accurate and well designed tools from bosch.
I'd give their tools 6 stars if i could.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't beat this deal!
I must admit I was worried about purchasing this saw, because it seemed to cheap (price) compared to comparable Dewalt, Porter Cable, makita saws. However, bosch makes great equipment, and they came through with this one as well.

After setting this up and testing it, I have to give it 5 stars simply because the price is unbelievable, and the saw performs flawlessly. There are a few minor things I would change if I could, but they are minimal and not very important, only matters of design, convenience, etc. see below.

One negative reviewer stated that the detents weren't adjustable, and couldn't believe Bosch would build a saw without adjustments. This is incorrect. In order to adjust the angles on a miter saw, you need to change the relative position of the detents to the fence. On some saws, like the Porter cable, you can move the detents. On others, such as this, you move the fence.(The detents are cast in position and can't be moved). My saw wasn't correct out of the box, so I followed the instructions and loosed the fence and squared it to the blade with a combination square. However, this was difficult to do, and it still ended up slightly out of adjustment when tested on a board. My advice, which made it a piece of cake:Pick a 12" piece of wood with a perfectly straight edge (I used MDF), make a cut, check the square, adjust the fence and retighten, make another cut, and continue until you are dead on square at 90 degrees. This method wasted a little bit of wood, but I got it adjusted dead on accurate in about 5 minutes, and no fumbling around with a square against the blade.

Once I got the 90 degree detent in position, I checked the others making 45 degree cuts in both directions on 6 inch material and the results were PERFECT.I mean dead on perfect.I can't imagine better miters.

Another reviewer said there was play in the detents of 1 degree or so.If you put it in a detent and don't tighten the knob, there is some play, but only like 1/4 degree or so, and if you tighten the knob as you are supposed to, the play is taken up and the blade centers on the detent dead on in the middle, same place everytime I try it.If used correctly, there is no play.

    Other positive's:
-Comes with a quality 40 tooth blade. You don't have to buy a new blade to get good results with this saw. Most of the others come with a cheap blade that will cause tear out on your trim.
-Wrenches included for fence and blade, and mounted on the rear of the saw in convenient places.you'll never find yourself without the wrench you need.
-Adjustable slide on left end of saw gives you a little bit of extension in the table, about 4-5 inches.
-No upward kick with startup like my old delta saw, and what I hear from dewalt.I hated my old saw for that.I would line up the cut, and then when I hit start, the saw would kick and make my board jump, and I'd have to line it up again with the blade spinning. This saw doesn't do that, I'm happy to say.

    Negatives:
-Dust collection isn't very effective, but I've never seen a miter saw that is.Seems average to me.
-Handle is vertical position.I would prefer horizontal like the dewalt, but I don't think it's worth paying the extra money. Then again, I don't make miter cuts all day everyday.
-Blade guard is a little too cautious in my opinion, and not adjustable.Guard stays pretty low to the table, so when you are lining up the cut, you have to have your eyes nearly level with the board to see your mark.In other words, the guard obstructs your view if you are looking from above the saw at all.Easy fix is to mount the saw in a high position, as most people do with miters anyway. However, if you put the saw on the floor temporarily to do a few quick cuts, this can be a real pain.

Overall, a lot of thought went into the design of this saw.It is well constructed, the quality you'd expect from bosch, and dead-on accurate. It does everything I would expect it to do and more, and at a price that I still can't believe.I had reservations before I bought it, but now I'm thrilled that I did. Thanks Bosch!

5-0 out of 5 stars great blade
It's great for slicing wood (walnut, maple, redwood, and mahagony) very clean and precise. It can slice just about anything.I have read that the Makita has a nice blade included with their model and the Hitachi with the LAZER sounds cool ($500.00) but this saw was excellent for the price. ... DEWALT DW733 12-1/2" Portable Thickness Planer
    by DeWalt
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $718.00

    Editorial Review

DeWalt's sturdy four-column planer is a great addition in any workshop--and, because it's easily portable, transition to the job site is always an option. Thanks to the largest material support table of any portable planer on the market and a tight-locking cutterhead, boards feed through effortlessly with minimal snipe. We also liked how easy it is to measure precise cuts with the turret stops (set at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of an inch). There's also a calibrated depth crank that adjusts 1/16 of an inch with each full rotation. Unlike other portable planers, DeWalt's provides an easy-to-read gauge of how much material each pass removes as well as the amount left over on the original board. Rather than using double-edged knives, this model takes two big M2 high-speed steel knives with single-surface cutting areas that deliver an impressive 64.1 cuts per inch. Changing knives took us a mere 10 minutes (and we were new to this design) and--better yet--they can be resharpened multiple times rather than discarded after one use. Powered by 15 amps with a no-load speed of 10,000 rpm, DeWalt's easily transported planer is a nice combination of high performance and convenience. Each planer ships with an extra set of knives, magnets, and wrenches. --Justin Paul ... Read more

    • Magnetic gauge holds knives in place, making changing knives easy
    • Includes an extra set of knives and dust hood, an $84.99 value
    • Four-column head lock secures cutterhead to eliminate snipe
    • Extra long infeed and outfeed tables provide 33 inches of material support
    • 15 amp motor rotates the cutterhead at 10,000 rpm, making 64 cuts per inch

5-0 out of 5 stars If a woodchuck could chuck wood
I like this planer just fine. However I must admit that this is the only one I have ever used.I had a friend who had a maple tree fall in his yard.We went our and ripped about 40, 12" x 30" x 3" blocks with our chain saws. (without a ripping chain). The blocks were in terrible shape.I have run these through this planner and now have 40 pieces of 1" x12"x30 beautiful marbled maple.I had to run each piece through about 20- 25 times to get all the chain saw marks out.So I would guess that is about 2500 board feet of nasty rock hard maple.NO PROBLEM.This thing is like a ginsui knife,I took one of the pieces and ran it through to see how fine I could finish it, a buddy of mine needed a custom size cutting board for his kitchen cabinet.I hardly need to sand it when I was done. The one problem I had was when I bought it the screw that holds the handle on was not long enough and I stripped the hole, but it stays on with gravity just fine. I Also would like two speeds, as with most of my reviews this is my fault for not spending the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Litte Machine!
You will be hard pressed to find a planer that will do a better job than this DW733.Set up was a snap, maybe an hour to remove from the box and double check all adjustments. If you do the basics - keep knives sharp, in and out tables adjusted properly and provide support for long pieces - this machine will give you great results.Snipe is minimal to non-existant. The dust hood & my 650cfm dust collector eliminates 95% of all chips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I bought this planer 10 months ago and just got around to using it.I am impressed!Set up was easy right out of the box.The planer makes super smooth cuts with no snipe.Dewalt has upgraded to a 3 knife model, but it is hard to see how they could improve on this one.The dust hood does a good job with my shop vac attached with very few chips ending up on the table.
The only negative I have found so far is the carrying handles. If you don't carry it level the planer can shift on the telescopic handles and pinch your hand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good results
I have to say that it took me some time before I used my new Delta drum sander. I DID NOT get the "limited edition" model. I read on several woodworkers chat forums about how the learning curve on drum sanders is really steep, and that the sanders are very hard to adjust, etc. I wondered numerous times if I should have bought a Performax instead.
Well I finally wired up 220 volt for my new Jet canister DC (I read that you can't use a drum sander without a DC hook up). I found some scrap pieces of oak, maple and cherry and started playing around with it. The drum sander worked like a charm. I got no snipe (one of the many complaints I read about), no burn marks, and the sander never stalled. I then changed the pre wrapped paper, and started swearing until I figured out I was starting from the wrong end of the drum (no jokes about guys never reading the directions please). The sander seems to be built like a tank, does what it is suppose to do (it is not a planer) and was easy to put together. I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Machine, Excellent Results
I've had this machine for about 24 hours, and I've already gotten great results. Since it is still brand new, I'll restrict my review to shipping, setup and initial results.

    SHIPPING

I actually received the machine about 4 days before I expected it, and the box was in premo condition, so I give shipping 5 stars.

    SETUP

I expected to spend about 4 hours setting the machine up and getting it fine tuned. It actually took about an hour and a half, including installing the pneumatic drum sander. The instructions were clear and very easy to follow. After assembling the sander, I ran the tests recommended by Delta to make sure the drum was parallel with the table and the in-feed belt tracked ok. The folks at the factory did an excellent job because no - and I mean no - adjustments were necessary. The drum is perfectly parallel with the table and the in-feed belt tracks true. I give assembly and factory settings 5 stars.

    FIRST RESULTS

I build hammered dulcimers, which require a trapazoidal soundboard that is about 20" deep, 1/4" thick and about 40" at its widest. The soundboards are made of Western Red Cedar, which is soft and shows every imperfection. Since the soundboard is deeper than the drum sander, I need to make two passes to sand the entire surface. I was concerned that the soft wood would show a ridge at the overlap. No problem. The soundboard (which is going on my latest dulcimer) is flat as a table top and looks great. I couldn't be happier.

My only gripe is with one of the retaining clips that holds the sanding belt on the drum. One of the clips is almost impossible to open with my fingers, and I have to use a pair of pliers to squeeze the clip and insert the belt. The other clip is just fine. I'm going to contact Delta about it. Because of the clip problem, I rate first results at 4 stars.

Would I recommend this machine for the small shop? You bet!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool but not out of the box.
I got the sander and while assembling it noticed that the support for the power feed assy was bent and the screws holding it in alignment were overtightened causing the lock washers to spread.Thiswould not let the feeder set down flat. The lockwashers had to be removed. The shaft for the free accessory drum sander was badly bent and caused the machine to vibrate very badly. I have emailed Delta and await their reply. I did get the main sander working and it seems to be smooth and does a fine job. Seems like Delta can still design a good tool. They just have trouble building them. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If your projects require you to drill with big bits or if you find yourself attempting to drill with precision under questionable circumstances, this heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will help you get out of your, um, hole. Running off a 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts, it gives you an impressive deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches and holds up to 5/8-inch-diameter bits. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column give it the industrial feel and durability we look for in this type of tool. You'll enjoy the rotating work base--which bevels, of course, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles--as well as the depth stop that can be set quickly and easily with microadjustments and a locking mechanism, great for repetitive drilling. While other models sometimes place hard-to-read speed and belt charts under the top cap, Delta uses a wide, clearly legible chart to explain how to configure the belts for each of 16 speeds (215 to 2,720 rpm). And, thanks to the smooth, cool-running induction motor inside, you're not likely to find yourself shopping for a drill press again for an extremely long time. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine
I recently purchased the Delta 17-965 based on comments and several reviews in magazines. I must say I'm very pleased. This machine runs smooth and fairly quietly. It appears well made with a fine fit and finish. The measured runout, to the best of my abilities, appears to be about .002" on the chucked drill bit's shaft. I found it on sale in the tool crib catalog cheaper than the JET, with which I bought a magnetic base lamp. This drill press will probably outlive me. Its always nice knowing you'll never have to replace a peice of equipment again.

    I highly recommend this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool
I've used this tool a lot since purchasing it last Nov. I've had no problem with it. Be sure and have help in lifting the head up onto the column, strong and tall help is best. My only complaint is the plastic belt cover tends to vibrate. If the resulting hum could be eliminated, it would be a very quiet machine. It's not real loud, just an annoyance which I should be able to fix in some way. Nicely finished and easily adjusted. The depth stop is a great improvement over what has been the "norm" in the past. Quick, tool less adjustment which stays put.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Before Buying
I ordered the Delta 17-965 from Amazon which was suppose to come with a mail in offer for a mortising kit. Imagine my surprise when I did not receive the paperwork for the mail in offer and I learned from Amazon that the offer was a misprint which they would not honor. To make matter worse they want to charge me return shipping which is almost $400! Think twice and buy locally. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but I expected more.
Recently, while in the middle of a hardwood flooring project, I purchased this model sander at a local supplier. After considerable use, here's my assessment.
    Positive observations:
    - It's build like a tank and will probably run forever.
    - It's well-balanced and offers smooth sanding capabilities
    Negative observations:
    - The metal baseplate or "shoe" that came with the unit started warping after 1-2 hours of hard use, due to excessive heat.Fortunately, I had taken the advice of another reviewer and purchased the graphite impregnated shoe and was able to replace the original shoe without losing time on the job.
    - At 12.0 amps, it's still significanly underpowered. It almost stalls with a 50 grit belt and heavy pressure.
    - It's dust collection capabilities are mediocre, at best.Even when connected to a large shop vac, it clogs continuously during heavy sanding.Repeated clearing with an air hose is necessary.
    - The machining on the housing is poor, especially in the area around the dust collection opening near the back of the belt. The mating surfaces don't align, which adds to the dust collection problems since the dust collects in the misaligned joint.I was able to improve this some with a small file but access is limited unless you remove the rear roller.
    - The label on this machine says "Whisper Seriers".I don't know what Porter Cable's definition of "whisper" is, but it's obviously much different than mine.Ear plugs are absolutely essential for the operator and anyone else within "whisper" distance.
Overall, I would have to say that there are better choices than this sander.I own numerous Porter Cable tools and have been satisfied with most but this one leaves me disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beats a Power Planer hands-down!
This has to be be the best power tool I have bought in recent years. I had bought a power planer for quickly reducing thickness of rough cut wood. However the planer is not really suitable for final finishing as it tends to leave deep gouges in the material.. I had a conventional palm sander, but that took too long to achieve results. So taking up the 30-day satisfaction guarantee, and checking out other manufacturers, I opted for the PC 362.

It was absolute charm to setup and use. You change belts by flipping a lever. You adjust the "trim" of the belt with a small wheel while the machine is turned on. With 50 grit, it quickly removes 1/16 inch in a couple of passes. So start with 80 and don't apply any pressure - let the tool just glide. Its 15lb and far more sturdy than bosch or dewalt competitors. However the weight is actually a plus, because it means you don't have to force it down to remove material. The dust bag actually works very well at removing the sawdust.

The main consideration was the price. However, don't think you'll get good results if you go for a sub- [$] unit. This is a tool any professional will use again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Unit
I was facing the daunting task of sanding a 34 X 72 quarter-sawn white oaktable top I had glued up, and knew using my Makita 3 X 21 would challenge my somewhat fragile emotional state.I looked at the Bosch and liked it, but am somewhat partial to PC, and also saw the extra weight as an advantage, not a negative.I started out with 80-grit, but just was taking too long, so I switched to 50-grit, then graduated to 80, then 120.What a beautiful job this tool does: smooth, powerful, and well balanced. The key to using a belt-sander is to use a light touch, letting the machine do the work, and to make your transitions in direction (fore & aft) as imperceptively as possible.Try not to concentrate on "problem areas" and sand the entire piece uniformly & methodically.Think of the machine as "floating" over the work. This is a big unit that prduces first rate results.Oh, by the way, don't botherwith variable speed, it just is not neccessary... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I bought this instead of a 6x48" with 12" disc combination sander, and a careful comparison of the Powermatic Model 80. And i really dislike the way the lower end Jet 6x48 with 9" disk is made.

The fit and finish are good. Everything appears better than I anticipated for a sander in his price range. It's essentially a low end edge sander and there are features I wish were better and went in questioning them but I really wanted something this size and can't get something twice as expensive nor do I have room for much larger.

Powermatics' Model 13 uses a cast iron platen, this uses laminated steel. It's very, very thick and graphite coated. I spoke with someone at Powermatic and asked "what's the advantage of the cast iron platten, since the prices of these 2 machines is the same." They said it doesn't really matter, there's no benefit.

The way the table adjusts or moves up and down is rather Mickey Mouse but it's not terribly awkward as I originally feared it may be. It's not that bad at all.

What is more bothersome to me is the fact that the table will only go so low robbing 1 1/2 inches of belt width when the sander is on the verticle. You have a 4 1/2 usable width which irks me. I don't think it would have been asking too much to atleast split the difference.
It's fine when you move the sander to horizontal. You now have a full 6" width but you have to use the supplied steel edge fence if a fence is needed if you go that route.

Powermatic makes a new Model 80 edge sander that oscilates and the cast iron table moves vertical if you place the sander on its horizontal. The model 80 also has a tiltable table on the front. Features i really liked but the platen is held on by only 4 screws which are towards the middle and the platten appears thinner, features i don't like at all. This sander is also a compromise. This Jet does have a heavier platten and is held on by 8 screws, 4 along each edge from front to back and is very thick and machined flat.

So faced with compromises I felt I needed a heavier platten vs. the moveability of model 80's tables. The Powermatic people also said they were compromises and neither stood out as a clear cut over the other. So far I'm pretty happy with this compromise.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jet's biggest disappointment
I'm a big jet owner but am VERY disappointed in this sander. The table height adjustment is primitive. It takes holding it in place with two hands and tightening two knobs.Very, very poor design. And the table obscures over an inch of the belt, so this sander only has about 4 1/2 inches usable.Very poor.

Table angle adjustment is very crude.A single toggle lever in a hard to access place.I don't tilt it much so it's not a big deal, but it is a poor design.

I haven't tried/needed to adjust tracking yet but the adjustment looks like it is going to be a hassle, unlike my Delta drum/disk sander.

This whole tool feels like one of Jet's first designs that never got improved. This is NOT the quality I expect from Jet.I'm sorry I bought it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
It's true that this device is relative quiet (though any graphite-coated
platen will also be quiet), and the belt tracks well, but this sander
has a lot of serious problems.

First, This is really a 4-3/4" sander. It's impossible to set the table
height so that the top of table is even with the bottom of the belt.
In fact, the best that you can get is for the top of the table to
be a little more than an inch above the bottom of the belt, seriously
limiting the amount of belt width that's actually available for use.
Since I need 6" of belt, this one is a show stopper for me.

There are other problems as well:

The table-angle and table-height adjustments are Mickey Mouse.
The angle adjustment has no detents and the protractor scale is very
inaccurate and inconveniently located---you have to use a square every time
you set the set up the sander for 90 degrees. Since I move from
flat to 90-degrees all the time, this is a real inconvenience. Moreover,
the table is held up by two legs that are held in place by two screws,
and that's it.Lifting the table up from the lowest position is
difficult---there's no spring or adjustment screw as in most other
edge sanders, and lifting the table requires a lot of muscle.
To lower the table, you have to hold
up the 30-pound weight of the table with one hand while you release
the set screws with the other. If you slip, the table comes
crashing down to the stops. Moreover, the two legs of the table
don't move evenly, so it's difficult to adjust the table so that
    its level.

Though the sander tracks well out of the box, tracking will
need to be adjusted as the belt stretches. Unlike other edge sanders,
there is no convenient knob to adjust tracking. The tracking
adjustments are complicated, and very inconvenient. One of the drums
is adjusted using a small (3mm), easy-to-loose hex wrench. The other
requires fiddling around with a hammer (loosening four screws and nudging
the motor into place). This is way too complicated for an adjustment
that you'll have to do all the time.

Equally inconvenient is the lever that releases the belt tension, which does
not move the drum enough for a new belt to slip on easily. It should
have at least another 1/2" of play when the lever is in the released
position. Consequently, belts have to be worked into place rather than
slipping on smoothly. Finally, you have to remove the dust-collection
hood (three easy-to-loose screws) to use the end stop.

In all, I was very disappointed with this sander. The features that
the other reviewers raved about (such as being able to use
the end for contour sanding) are available in every other sander
on the market, including less expensive ones. Almost all edge
sanders come with graphite-coated platens, nowadays. I'd go with
just about any of the other alternatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing detail sander!
We are building a sailboat and had avoided buying a detail sander for three years, because the ones we'd seen had little power and were flimsy. When we needed to get into corners, we used a Dremel tool with a sanding drum.We burned out one Dremel tool, and then went through five of the (returnable) hardware-store brand. One day, a friend brought over her Bosch detail sander and we were astonished. We went out and bought one right away, and several months of hard use later we're still very happy with it.We've worn out the triangle sanding pad (esp. its corners) so we'll be replacing that, but we've been extremely happy with the tool itself. We should have bought one when we started the boat! It's as good as our Porter-Cable random-orbital, and that's saying something!

    Editorial Review

Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB is one member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it.

Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Router But It Has ON/OFF Switch Problems
I have owned this router for 1 year now and for the most part I like it. However I have been having a problem with the ON/OFF switch. I was just about to take it to BOSCH Service when I decided to read some wood forums on the product. It appears that I am not the only one to have this problem. Several posts on different forums and even on this Amazon site, people are complaining of the ON/OFF switch failing or working intermittently. One reviewer said that you can gently remove the switch and clean it, which I did, this corrected the problem but it appears that the switch is prone to this dust problem. Other then the switch problem that can be frustrating especially when you're in the middle of using it, the router performs well. The variable speed and soft start are very nice. If Bosch fixes the switch problem this is easy a 5 star product.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good router but...
Everyone raves about the Bosch 1617EVS router, primarily
because it has a good depth adjustment mechanism. However, as a
previous reviewer pointed out, the On/Off switch is flakey.
Mine died for the first time very quickly after I started using
the router. I had to bring it to a repair place and let it sit
for a month while the switch was on order. It just died again.
I suppose it is best to get two routers, so you have one to use
while the other is in the shop.

1-0 out of 5 stars Undelivered Promises
The Bosch 1617EVS is an attractive router package; however, Amazon is unable to deliver on it! Don't believe the "ships in 24 hours" claim. I've ordered the item on December 31st and since then I've been receiving "delay in shipment" notices. The one I received today promises me that I will not see the ordered router until the March time frame. Should I wait, they ask? Unfortunately, along with the router I've ordered several accessories. All of the accessories have arrived, but not the router. Do I wait? Do I cancel and return the accessories? Do I postpone the projects for which I've scheduled the router based on Amazon's false delivery date promise? What would you do? Go to Home Depot and buy a router that you can feel and touch and take home with you?

I've been shopping with Amazon for many years and this is the first major let down on their part. Has Amazon outgrown its commitment to its customer base? ... Read more

JET's 14-inch band saw offers woodworkers two big improvementsover other band saws in this class. The blade guide with light springtension inside the mechanism was the first thing we noticed. It staysin place when you loosen it instead of crashing down on the tabletop(or your fingers) as guides from other saws can. This allows fortwo-handed height adjustment, letting you set the guide precisely whereyou want it quickly and easily. The blade guide also offersoil-impregnated plastic parts rather than steel, so the blade stayssharp longer. We were also impressed with the blade tracking device, which locks in place so there's no need for readjustment after the testrun. The saw has a 1-horsepower motor that's fan cooled and fullyenclosed for dust protection, and computer-balanced, die-cast aluminumwheels for smooth operation. The 15-by-15-inch cast-iron table isslightly larger than tables on competing band saws, and it tilts 45degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left.

Other advantages include a heavy-gauge metal housing and a powdercoating (rather than paint), meaning the saw will hold up to regularusage and still look good. Another user-friendly feature is thequick-connect electrical plug, so you don't have to follow long cordsto their outlets before each blade change. Band saws aren't thedustiest machines around, so the 2-inch dust port for the shop vacseems just right, but a 2- to 4-inch converter can be added for usewith a more serious shop-dust-collection system. This saw is best forshops doing smaller pieces or serious hobbyists who want to do finework. Owners will enjoy quick and easy setup by following a clear setof instructions. --Nancy Gleason ... 4-0 out of 5 stars First of Two Reviews
After hours and months or reseach and review reading I came to purchase the Jet 14" bandsaw.I am only going to review what I have seen in the limited time that I have owned it.It took about two hours for complete set up to include the mobile base, fence system, and riser block.Only very minor adjustments were made which you would expect from any new tool purchase.I encountered no problems with the enclosed hardware and the fit and finish on the machine was excellent.First time out the machine passed the nickle test with all stock parts to include the belt.

After I log some major hours on the machine I will be back with what I really think of the tool. After all it's what your money buys in the long run that really matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding choice
I have spent a year looking at the different band saws. At first I was looking at Delta and comparing it to the other saws. I got stuck on Delta because I own other Delta tools and I liked the quality and performance of these machines. So, I ordered a Delta 14 inch band saw. But after reading the reviews (excellent source of information) I quickly cancelled the order. Then about the same time a Jet 14 inch band saw caught my eye. It was the same price and the reviews were excellent. So I purchased it. I was impressed right from the start. I received the saw 3 days early (way to go ABF). It took a little time to assemble the saw but it went right together. After a few fine adjustments were made on the blocks and the bearing the saw was ready to go. The operation was smooth and very little vibration. Only one recommendation, purchase the mobile base at the same time. It will save time and your back moving it around the shop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice band saw
In this price range, this band saw can't be beat.I've ued mine for ripping, resawing, precision work, hardwoods, softwoods, plastics. The only time the motor bogs down is when I'm resawing thick stock.

But there are a few things I'd change:

    1. The guide blocks wear awfully fast. I bought a set of Cool Blocks and they are wonderful.

    2. The fence isn't so hot. After just a few weeks, it wouldn't lock to the table.I now insert a piece of sandpaper in the locking cam. It works but this could be designed better. (Fences are not new technology--this really shouldn't be a problem.)

    3. The table top is just too small.

    4. Buy the riser (height extender). Before long, you'll want to resaw a 10" wide board.Trust me, you will.

    5. The dust control port is stupid, awful and a waste of time. The port is 2 1/2" on the exit side. But, if you look inside the port, the internal restriction is 1" x 1/2" !!! Whoever designed this should be fired. (Don't designers test their products?) You will want to cut a hole on the door and install a 4" dust port. Relatively easy to do.
