JET 708750B/JWBS-1818" Woodworking Bandsaw with Bearing Guides
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $1,299.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This 18-inch band saw offers high-quality construction and big resawing capacity to serious woodworkers on a tight tool budget. This saw's most prominent benefit is the one-piece, dual tapered column design, which offers superior rigidity and strength, minimizing vibration and keeping cuts clean, smooth, and accurate. Woodworkers in the know will also appreciate the inclusion of roller bearings on both the upper and lower guides, with dual roller bearings on each side of the blade and a single bearing behind the blade for back support. The system greatly reduces the friction inherent in stationary and European guide systems while providing more support. The saw is powered by a totally enclosed, 1-1/2-horsepower, fan-cooled motor with a blade speed of 3,000 sfpm. There's a large cast-iron worktable (19 by 19 inches) that tilts 45 degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left. This model also comes with a JET rip fence and a good miter gauge. The saw's maximum cutting height is 10-1/4 inches, and the upper blade guide uses a smooth and precise rack-and-pinion adjustment mechanism. This tool's versatility just keeps on going, accommodating 133-inch blades from 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches wide for equally smooth curve cutting or resawing. JET puts the finishing touches on the saw with two locking cabinet doors and the durable powder-coated finish found on all their shop tools. In all, we think serious woodworkers will really appreciate the high quality JET is able to deliver for such a low cost. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
I give this machine 5 stars. Some talk about the sub-par blade that is included with this machine, the so-called underpowered motor, and the difficult to adjust lower blade guides.

First, the blade that comes with this unit is as they say, for decoration.Buy a Timber Wolf blade and that complaint is gone.Your buying a saw, not a blade.Great saw!

Second, I put a 3/4" x 3 tpi TimberWolf blade on and it resawed through 5 1/4" wide oak like butter and the finish was better than the rough planned wood I buy at the sawmill.Motor is not underpowered if the setup is correct.Again, your buying a saw, not a blade.Great saw.

Finally, the lower guides.I put the new blade on and set it up according to the direction(Timberwolf blades dont use the standard tension setting). The lower was more difficult than the top.But its easy.It took maybe 5 minutes at most. The lower bearings have one knurled knob to loosen up.loosen up the knob and set the 0.003 clearance, tighten knob.then set the thrust bearing. No big deal. When changing blade widths, there are two internal wrenching(allen head) bolts. With the table at 90 deg to the blade, loosen up the outer one, tilt the table and loosen the inner one. Adjust for the blade width and tighten the inner, put table back to 90 deg and tighten the outer. EASY.Then set the side bearings and thrust bearing. If five minutes to set up a machine is too long, well, maybe woodorking is not your thing.Again, Great saw!

And all that after the first saw I got had a dented up upper door complete with bent upper wheel.Damaged somewhere between here and Tiawan. It happens.Got a replacement within a week and the old one taken away.

This saw is the best deal out there.Forget the blade that it comes with, forget about those that say its underpowered, and forget about what some say about the difficulty adjusting the lower guides. If you enjoy making great stuff out of wood, buy the saw, buy a couple timber wolf blades and spend the 5 minutes it takes to set up the lower guides.I have a piece of hard maple that is 12x14x1.I'll rip it to 10"(the max capacity for resawing) and see what this saw can do.If it went through 5 1/4" oak like a hot knife through butter, I think it will take 10" hard maple with little problems.UPDATE:Got a chance to do some resawing with hard maple and the results were amazing.I used a piece of 8" wide stock 3/4" thick(using the 12" wide piece for something else).I resawed to get a 1/2" piece and now have a good size piece of 1/8" thick veneer. You can get the TimberWolf blades at a great discount from SuffolkMachinery.Do a search for "Suffolk Machinery Corp" for the website.

    Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a stout tool.
My saw arrived in a crate that literally "wrapped" the entire saw. With the exception of the table and rip fence, the saw was completely assembled. I immediately rewired the 1 1/2hp motor for 220v operation. The only downers I encountered with the machine were the very short 5 foot power cord and the cheesy 3/4" blade. I put a brand new 1" Timberwolfe on and replaced the power cord using 12/2 s.o. wire. Once all adjustments were made, I took a piece of 8 qtr. x 8" maple and started resawing 1/32" stips that were 3 feet long.Every piece was perfect. This is a heavy machine.A mobile base is a must.I can't understand why anyone would buy the Delta X5 14".For roughly the same money, you get twice the saw with the Jet 18". The "underpowered" reviews obviously haven't set their saws up for 220v operation. This saw has not bogged down on me once.
I looked very, very hard at the Laguna and the Mini Max. They are good machines. They also cost over $1000 more. You won't be disappointed with this saw.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jet 18" Bandsaw, Great Machine for the Money
First off, I bought the machine at my local woodcraft store on sale for $999, best price on the machine I've seen.It came assembled so I did not have to deal with any assembly.Pros and Cons

Pros, runs great, quiet, cuts very well, so far handles everything I've run thru it without problems, including 8" thick walnut. If you use a good blade, and a reasonable feed rate, I don't find horsepower to be an issue on this machine.

Cons, the blade that comes with the machine is terrible, but that seems to be a problem with any bandsaw. The lower guides are more difficult to adjust then any I've come across.

Yes, there are better machines out there, Laguna, Mini Max to name 2.Yet, for the money I dont think you will find a better machine.Read the December issue of Fine Woodworking regarding tips to tune up your bandsaw.I'm running the Jet without lower guide, so far it seems to work fine. I may purchase some aftermarket guideblock system to replace the lower guides on the Jet.Also, if you are considering purchasing a bandsaw, Lonnie Birds book is of great help.If Jet could do a better job on the lower guides I think the machine would rate 5 stars. ... Delta 36-843 "Limited Edition" 3 HP Unisaw with 50" Biesemeyer Fence
    by Delta
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $2,800.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches.

The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch.

This model comes with a 50-inch commercial Biesemeyer fence system andaccompanying table board. While the basics of this popular fence design have beencopied by competing saw and fence manufacturers, there's still nothing quite like theoriginal. The Biesemeyer is made of the heaviest gauge steel we've seen on a T-squaretype fence, and the fence face itself is made of laminated 9-ply Finland birch, gluedsolidly in place--a construction method that eliminates warpage in the fence line that thebolts or screws used in competing systems can cause. The fence locks to the front guiderail using Biesemeyer's three-point locking system and automatically aligns the fenceparallel to the blade when the lever is tightened down, providing reliable accuracy everytime. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Saw Ever!
This is my first and last table saw! Easy to set up and cuts perfectly with little to no adjusting right out of the crate. The moble base is an excellent accessory that make it easy to roll to the side when not in use. You will not go wrong ordering this saw. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed. Excellent customer service from Delta. The only problem that I had was with the Biesemyer fence. Seems that Biesemyer had a bad production run on the rails that fit this saw. Called Biesemyer and they sent a new set of rails without delay. If you have problems with the holes not aligning up with the table saw, let Biesemyer know. Other than that, excellent buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will be happy
this is a great tool.It may often be more than you actually need, but I can't imagine it ever being less than exceptional. If you have the room and the money, I would not hesitate to buy this saw.

You will want to consider where you will put it and how you will get it there. With the 50" fence it is very big, and your 220V needs to be located correctly so the cord can reach and you are not tripping on it.These are things I did not think clear through before the saw arrived and I should have. The other thing to think about is that it is extremely heavy, and it ships in effectively one piece.I needed a lot of help getting it into a basement shop, and after I got it there I decided I could never move. Assembly is simple, and everything is rock solid. After you have it in place, all that weight (and the associated power) is a wonderfull thing.

I am very happy with the fence, and have no complaints about the mobile base, though if the floor is not level, it does not have much clearance when you are moving the saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Deal
Delta really thought about the entire package when they put this together. Not only do you get one great saw, but they include the mobile base, a great blade, the table board, and the zero clearance table insert. They have taken all of the guess work out of buying multiple items for a saw and wrapped it into one package....

It you're comtemplating over a smaller contractors saw for your shop or a cabinet saw, go with the cabinet saw if you have the room, you won't be disappointed.I was so close to buying a Delta contractors saw, I'm glad I laid out the additional funds and went with the cabinet saw.

The saw is heavy, you need one or two friends to get the saw off of the skid and onto the mobile base and a friend to help you align the cast iron extension wings.Other than that the saw can be put together by one person. It took me about 5 hours total, working over a couple of days to get it together. The saw cuts straight and true and needed very little initial alignment. The fence made by Besymeiser is the best, you can't go wrong with it.I've added the Delta outfeed table to it (see review), and would highly recommend adding some kind of outfeed table to the saw to make cutting long board that much more easier.

Overall I am very happy with the saw, it is the backbone of my shop.

I Would buy another Delta cabinet saw if I had to, but I believe I'll never have to replace this saw. ... Read more

Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step upfrom Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with theprofessional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head,a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There'salso a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piecefence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuckkey/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, andDelta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inchchisel and bit sets. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great machine, when it isn't broken!
My machine arrived by FedX, and seemed to be in fine shape.I got it running in less than 30 minutes including cleaning the nice coat of oil from "wood touching surfaces." I got twelve mortises done, when the handle snapped off at the spring pin.I noticed two fine cracks on the outside edge of the spring pin hole when I assembed it, but assumed they were made that way.Looking back now, it appears that the spring pin was driven into the hole, and split the retainer.Well, anyway, on the thirteenth mortise the casting snapped in two places.I got on the phone to Delta, and they assured me that they would send out the piece, as soon as it became available--backorder.It seems they have had a run on this part.
The machine does beautiful work, and it sure beats doing it by hand.A bit of clean-up with a chisel and the mortises will be as perfect as can be.My project will have to wait until the part comes in.At least I won't have to send the whole machine in for repair.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Broken in Shipping
I know some people think one should rate the machine and not the shipping, but, if over 30% of the people that order this tool receive a broken one do to shipping, I think it is safe to assume that in the total manufacturing process of this tool inclusive of Packaging, this tool is failing the final step. So, I give it a three. This is with the assumption that I would love the tool if it wasn't broke.

At least after reading many of the reviews, the first thing I did was examine the machine well prior to removing it from the box.I noticed the crack before I ever took it out.

If you order this machine, be prepared to receive a broken unit. The price and free freight may be enough to give it a shot.It was for me.Hope the next one is not broke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great small shop mortiser
I received this through Amazon without any of the shipping problems detailed in other reviews. This was setup and working in less than 30 minutes. The chisels I received with my mortiser seem of decent quality but no doubt I'll upgrade those in the future.Despite other users' reviews, I have not had any problems with the stock hold down.I've noticed that if I push it all the way down and then pull up on the very front lip of the hold down, it comes up to a perfect height so that it still rests on the stock but I'm still able to move it around under the hold down.I've only had the chisel grab the stock and not let go once and that was because I didn't use the hold down (oops).Great mortiser, cuts clean and easily.I do like the fact that the Delta mortiser is virtually all cast iron whereas similar products (Jet, Shop Fox) use the least amount of cast iron they can to get by. ... Editorial Review

For those seeking a midsize jointer for the long haul, this 6-inch model is a great find suitable for the professional workplace or serious home woodshop. Powered by Delta's trusted 1-horsepower induction motor, the three-blade drum spins quietly in its cast-iron bed. Adjusting with rack-and-pinion precision, the fence tilts 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees for beveling and chamfering applications. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side--a feature for which we have much respect. Thanks to industrial-grade infeed and outfeed tables, even longer 6-inch-wide planks get the support they need as you remove up to 1/2 of an inch of material to the collection port on each pass. So you want to increase your edge on the competition? Delta feels the same way. --Justin Paul ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fence Biggest Drawback
If it were not for the cheap, cast aluminum fence I would recommend this. I think if you search enough you'll see that this is the single biggest complaint about this.

Suggestion: hold off until you can afford the next Delta model up (I believe that is the 360). It may be 2X the price, but well worth it. Also, the Ridgid is an outstanding buy at $399.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars works for me.
i,ve been using this jointer for about two months now and it is a real joy to use. i,ve heard the other reviews that were not to good, but mine is just great.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's with the pulleys not aligning?
After doing my homework (reading many reviews of 6" jointers in woodworking publications as well this forum), I settled on the Delta. The Jet had caught my eye (I have 3 other Jet machines, and have been impressed with their Quality Control), but in the end I opted for the Delta.

There is no question this is a great 6" jointer, as other reviewers have said. However, there is a design flaw (are you listening, Delta?) mentioned by other reviewers.

Why should I have to reverse the pulleys to get the belt properly aligned?ESPECIALLY SINCE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT! There, I feel better.

I also have another minor complaint with setup. The third bolt that attaches to the base through the dust chute could be a challenge for big armed, big handed guys.I managed, with very little wiggle room.

Overall, results with this jointer are impressive. Out of the box, the Delta performed flawlessly. No question, I'd give this product 5 stars, if not for the above-mentioned gripes.

I highly recommend purchasing a Delta 22-580K 13" planer to complement the jointer.I did, with no regrets. Now that's a fine product, worthy of 5 stars.

At the end of the day, the jointer and planer make a fine team.
Get past the setup, and this jointer will perform very well for you.No question. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A staple in the professional woodshop, a drill press should be able to perform grunt work, yet quickly adjust for precision applications. Jet's 16-1/2-inch model does just that. Made of cast-iron and heavy-gauge steel components, this press spins bits up to 5/8 of an inch with 16 speeds from 200 to 3,630 rpm. A 3/4-horsepower induction motor drives the belts, and, for your convenience, it can run off either 115-volt outlets (for which it comes prewired) or 230-volt sources. The large 13-3/4-inch worktable glides easily with rack-and-pinion adjustment and tilts 45 degrees right or left to accommodate your needs. Two features we like are the positive depth stop on the left side, which quickly adjusts and locks in place via three nuts, and the built-in lamp, a nice touch some competitors don't offer. Changing belt position is a snap after flipping open the hinged metal cover, and, to personalize the press for your comfort and peace of mind, you can adjust the tension on the spindle return spring, as well as lock out the start button to protect others in your absence. This industrial-style drill press is a tool any professional or serious home woodworker can depend on. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Drill Press
I chose this drill press after reading a lot of reviews comparing Jet, Delta, Ridgid, etc., both here and in forums, magazines, etc., and the Jet received higher marks on average (all had reviews that ranged from excellent to poor, so one has to obtain some sort of weighted average).I also checked out the Ridgid and the Jet at local stores, and both looked and felt good (lowering quill, manually turning spindle, raising table). The Jet had a larger "swing," longer quill travel, and a larger motor (3/4 hp vs. 1/2 hp) than the Ridgid, though the Ridgid was cheaper. Also, one local store that carries very high quality power tools only stocked Jet drill presses, an indication that the owner is putting his reputation behind them.

Assembly was easy and was completed without a hitch.Putting a straight 3/8" rod into the chuck, I checked that the table was square to the rod and that runout was minimal (I forget the measurements, but runout was very small).

I have had this drill press for 3 months now, and it is working well.At first use, there was some vibration at almost all speeds, so I checked that the pullies were aligned vertically (coplanar), which they were, and that the motor was not vibrating (it was smooth when removed and run on the bench).I then purchased a 5' link belt, which nicely made the two ~29" belts required, and the vibration was reduced to a minimal level (passes nickel test even when starting). The vibration was not really excessive before the link belts, but enough to make me less than ecstatic with my purchase. With the link belts, I'm very happy with the drill press.

The lowest speed of 200 rpm is very handy for larger Forstner bits and hole saws. The built-in light is nice (I had no bulb trouble that others noted), as is the chuck key holder, a small item but very convenient.

My only complaint is that the rack and gear system for changing the table height has some areas where it wants to bind a bit and then "jump."However, I crank slowly, and when I feel resistance, I back off and ease through it.Unlike some reviewers's units, my rack is straight and flush with the support, and slides smoothly (when rotating the table to either side), though problems that others have noted with the racks have helped by alerting me to swing the table slowly, watching the rack ends as they slide.

Overall a nice drill press that I hope will last until my son or one of my daughters inherits it from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many problems right out of box
I bought the Jet because, like many others, I was impressed with the good things other reviewers had to say about its overall value. The motor is more than powerful enough, the construction seems sturdy, and the range of speeds is impressive.

Now let me tell you about my ordeal with this drill press. When it arrived (1 day late) via ABF, the box was absolutely mutilated. The driver noted the damage to the box, and that there was no visible damage--which was true enough. In spite of the box's condition, the pieces inside seemed to be undamaged. Assembly took only about an hour. Everything fit together nicely, except the rack, which is bowed so that there is about 1/2 in of space between it and the support post. The cast iron base is heavy and sturdy, but mine is warped--no matter where I place it, I have to shim one corner to keep it from rocking. The motor is quiet, but the motor-mount is bent. The whole motor assembly sits about 7 degrees off plumb. Naturally this is a little disconcerting. I had no trouble mounting the arbor and chuck to the quill, but the run out is so severe (over 1/32 in.) that I get oblong holes. And talk about rattle! This thing rattles in more places than I can count! From top to bottom! Forget about the `nickel test', I can't even get a wrench to stay put on the table--it dances right over the edge.

In short, this drill press is 100% unusable.

I assume poor handling during shipping caused most of the problems I have experienced, but judging by other reviews, maybe not all.

I'm more than disappointed. I hope cases like this are rare.

    UPDATE 1:
I have been on the phone with tech support for over an hour. The rep I spoke with was very patient and understanding and he didn't dismiss my frustration. After some time talking about the problems, he sent me off to do a little troubleshooting on my own. When I called him back with the results, he advised me to send the whole thing back to Amazon.

    UPDATE 2:
The replacement arrived in much better condition than the first. The belts are still terrible, but otherwise this machine seems to be trouble free.

There was quite a lot of confusion about returning the defective unit, and in the end, I had to wait for the 'threatening letter' from Amazon before I could get a phone number to call and sort it out.

    Final thoughts:
I have purchased several other items from Jet, and I'm sure I will again in the future. I do wish quality control was a little more effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill Press - Amazon Stinks Though
This drill press is very nice. The description isn't as thorough as it could be on the site.It has plenty of speeds and the quality of the work that comes off of it is very nice.
Be careful when ordering.Amazon claims free shipping and in stock.I had to wait 2 weeks - and they charged me an addl. $9.95 for shipping.Wouldn't have been a big deal except I needed it for business. And they strung me along week by week instead of being up front about the delay.
Also having the same shipping and availability problems with a bandsaw I ordered from Amazon that same day.Had to cancel and order from a different supplier. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A good filtration system is as important as any tool in your shop, and the Jet AFS-1000 is a pretty inspired machine. Like other systems on the market, Jet's uses a two-filter process: an outer filter removes particles up to 5 microns in size and an inner, three-pocket filter traps particles as small as 1 micron. The electrostatic outer filter easily withstands three or four washings, and the inner filter can be blown clean easily with compressed air. On the power end, Jet's three-speed, 1/6-horsepower motor filters to 1044 cfm on high speed. The outer filter is well sealed and provides efficient intake. However, what really sets the AFS-1000 apart from most filtration systems is its remote control and timer features. Since these systems are most effective when placed high or hung from the ceiling, being able to control all of the unit's functions via remote control is a feature we quickly decided we wouldn't want to live without. The timer, which can also be set via remote, affords you the option to set it and forget it. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines including this one, to the tune of almost $2400.Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts.Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw.I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99.I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation.I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand.

1-0 out of 5 stars No way to review when new unit fuse blows
Just purchasd the unit based upon all of the favorable reviews. Maybe I'm in the minority but when connecting the power and hitting "ON"...poof, the fuse trips. I reset the fuse, try again, and...poof, the fuse blows. The third try was not a charm. Based upon a new unit doing this, I have to rate it 1 star. Perhaps I will spend a little more and by the USA-made JDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good investment with many applications
Solid construction and performance all around; the unit is intended for ceiling mount but is just portable enough for my purposes. Considering the many favorable customer reviews here, I'm not alone in endorsing the AFS-1000B and have no regrets having purchased one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be tempted by cheap dust collectors!
If there is one machine in your shop that needs to be well made and reliable it's your dust collector.Think about it, if you have 5 machines that require dust collection, your dust collector will run continuously while any of those machines are in operation. Therefore, your dust collector will run five times a much as any other machine in your shop.I had serious doubts about units costing half as much as this one being able to keep pace with this requirement.

I specifically was looking for a relatively compact size, maximum CFM capacity and as quiet as possible.I'm happy to report that all of these requirements were met by the Delta 2HP model. The impeller is metal and well balanced (this contributes greatly to the noise reduction over cheaper units), the metal sound baffle between the blower and the drum is superior to the flex hose found on cheaper models (which will eventually wear out from the abrasion of particles on it) and having three 4" connection points at the blower reduces the amount of ducting required.Yes this unit is made in Taiwan, but it is made to a very high standard and is well packaged to avoid shipping damage. In addition to the dust collector I also purchased the 1 micron upper bag, buy this if you plan on collecting sanding dust.I use what are called drum liners (intended to line 55 gallon drums and available at Home Depot) for the lower bag.Heavy plastic bags are better and can be re-used, but they are expensive, hard to find and do eventually rip.I also bought a remote control unit for the starter which has proven to be invaluable.I can start and stop the dust collector from anywhere in my shop even in the "I only have one cut" scenario.

I've complained in other postings on how difficult it is to get information on Delta products from Delta.Three requests on the DB rating of this machine made to their web site went unanswered.Just goes to show that even big companies wrestle with their intentions, direction and service on the web.Nonetheless, this is a high quality product and well worth the money.Highly recommended.

I have owned this collector for 2 years and have found it quite adequate to service my shop.I am reducting the shop due to rearanging the tools. I wish this had a larger single port to give me better airflow. I think it would be helpful if the bottom bag had a full length zipper to help empty the bag. Also, the bottom bag should have a velcro strip on the bag to hold it inplace whild trying to put the metal band on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 2 HP Single Stage Dust Collector
Want to run 3 machines at once? This machine will do it! This collector has (3) 4" collector inlets. I use metal ducting...I put a y in each of the inlets and have them connected to 6 machines. I consistently run theUnisaw, 8" jointer and 3 HP shaper at the same time with excellentresults. The Y's go to a band saw, sanding center and a scroll saw and Iuse blast gates to control the vacuum to each machine. Tried PVC...It was awaste of money...Stick with metal ducting and you will not regret it.I'vehad my set up for 2+ years and never had a lick of trouble! 4 out of 5stars...I would like to see Delta make Removing and Re-installing the clothbags easier. ... When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top dollar saw at a reasonable price
I purchased the dewalt 788 about two years ago.At the time I was seriously considering the excaliber. However when I saw the dw788 and was able to test one at my local woodcraft supply store I decided to save some money and go with the dewalt.Historicly when ever I have "gone cheap" I have often regreted it.Not so with the dw788.It has many of the same features as the excaliber and runs just as smooth. It passes the coin test quite well. The only problem is the knobs to tighten the blade holders are a bit small.I plan to replace them.Blade changing is fairly easy, some blades more so than others. However this is mostly just getting used to knowing where to place the blades in the holders.I just wish someone would offer a scroll saw blade that is just an eight or a quarter inch longer than the standard. It would make blade changing soooo much easier.I would gladly pay more for such blades.Anyway if money is not an object, then by all means get the excaliber or that other big blue saw that has no blade wobble at all, costs about $1400.But if you have to watch your money like I do then get the Dw788 its a great saw and looks really cool in my shop. The lamp is a great addition as well.I bought the set, lamp, saw, and stand. It all works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars super scroll saw
Hi folks; Just a line to let you know how good the DeWalt scroll saw is. I have four scroll saws, craftsman, dremel, delta, and Dewalt. I also have used most high cost top brands and I can say the DeWalt is the best that I have ever used. Almost no vibration, easy blade changes, large table, quiet and I would recomend this saw over all others. I have been woodworking for many years and it is rare these days to see a tool of this quality. Craftsman would be a good low entry saw if you don't want to spend more for a more user friendly saw. Hope this review helps someone out there. good luck,,,,Owen Smith

4-0 out of 5 stars good or great?
This is one fine saw its like driving a BMWcompared to a VW bug on bad roads. The only 2 problems I have had are the lower blade chuck and the on off switch. If you buy one and live aways from the repair shop be sure to get an extra on off switch it takes just a few minutes to put one in.Its a good idea to get an extre blade chuck both are the same part number. Keep the table clean and waxed and be sure to clean up the ends if the blades with sand paper also buff the table top with 300+ grite sandpaper befor waxing. The work piece hold down does make a fine hat holder, better than throwing it away.Have fun and enjoy spending the money you have saved.

    Editorial Review

DeWalt packs it all into this 12-inch compound miter saw: the big blade, the double bevel, the double rail slide. Very impressive. Finish carpenters who want to miter crown molding (up to 5-1/4 inches) vertically and framers who demand a 12-inch crosscut capacity will love this saw's 12-inch blade. The double bevel, of course, means you flip the saw instead of the wood, a great feature for those working with long molding or in confined spaces. The saw bevels to 45 degrees both ways and has the ability to bevel up to 48 if the need arises. The double rail slide is definitely burlier than the old single rail design. Both rails slide on self-cleaning, dust-sealed bearings, too.

What really gets us is the weight and balance of this saw: it slides smoothly through cuts, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels lightly (all of which speak to the saw's excellent design). You can miter 50 degrees left, 60 degrees right. We also appreciated the cam-lock miter gauge on this saw--the handle simply clamps down, which makes switching angles noticeably quicker than with a twist-lock miter.

DeWalt's D-handle is designed for right-handed use, but the trigger is big enough to use comfortably with your left hand if a particular cut requires it. The saw also has a depth-stop adjuster in case you have to cut a quick dado or two at the job site. The easy-to-read stainless-steel miter scale, with 11 positive stops allows you to lock in the most common angles quickly and, thanks to the cam-lock miter, it's also easy to dial in precise cuts just over or under the positive stop--a feature finish carpenters, in particular, will love. The electric blade stops the blade quickly, which saves time and makes work safer. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... I know go with Bosch/ Makita.

5-0 out of 5 stars Face The Facts
DeWalt makes a great miter saw any way that you look at it.I know the non-conformists disagree, but face the facts, DeWalt miter saws are solid performers. I've owned my 12 inch slider for nearly three years, and it works perfectly.I purchased a stablemate stand for it and the two go together very nicely.I like the power it has and the accuracy is superb. If you do knock the alignment out, it is easy to adjust. While I wouldn't touch a DeWalt jig saw with a 10 foot pole, their miter saws are top-notch.If you are doing a lot of intricate millwork, I would also buy the DeWalt 10 inch miter saw for increased accuracy on smaller moldings.

DeWalt's sturdy four-column planer is a great addition in any workshop--and, because it's easily portable, transition to the job site is always an option. Thanks to the largest material support table of any portable planer on the market and a tight-locking cutterhead, boards feed through effortlessly with minimal snipe. We also liked how easy it is to measure precise cuts with the turret stops (set at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of an inch). There's also a calibrated depth crank that adjusts 1/16 of an inch with each full rotation. Unlike other portable planers, DeWalt's provides an easy-to-read gauge of how much material each pass removes as well as the amount left over on the original board. Rather than using double-edged knives, this model takes two big M2 high-speed steel knives with single-surface cutting areas that deliver an impressive 64.1 cuts per inch. Changing knives took us a mere 10 minutes (and we were new to this design) and--better yet--they can be resharpened multiple times rather than discarded after one use. Powered by 15 amps with a no-load speed of 10,000 rpm, DeWalt's easily transported planer is a nice combination of high performance and convenience. Each planer ships with an extra set of knives, magnets, and wrenches. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If a woodchuck could chuck wood
I like this planer just fine. However I must admit that this is the only one I have ever used.I had a friend who had a maple tree fall in his yard.We went our and ripped about 40, 12" x 30" x 3" blocks with our chain saws. (without a ripping chain). The blocks were in terrible shape.I have run these through this planner and now have 40 pieces of 1" x12"x30 beautiful marbled maple.I had to run each piece through about 20- 25 times to get all the chain saw marks out.So I would guess that is about 2500 board feet of nasty rock hard maple.NO PROBLEM.This thing is like a ginsui knife,I took one of the pieces and ran it through to see how fine I could finish it, a buddy of mine needed a custom size cutting board for his kitchen cabinet.I hardly need to sand it when I was done. The one problem I had was when I bought it the screw that holds the handle on was not long enough and I stripped the hole, but it stays on with gravity just fine. I Also would like two speeds, as with most of my reviews this is my fault for not spending the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Litte Machine!
You will be hard pressed to find a planer that will do a better job than this DW733.Set up was a snap, maybe an hour to remove from the box and double check all adjustments. If you do the basics - keep knives sharp, in and out tables adjusted properly and provide support for long pieces - this machine will give you great results.Snipe is minimal to non-existant. The dust hood & my 650cfm dust collector eliminates 95% of all chips.

I bought this planer 10 months ago and just got around to using it.I am impressed!Set up was easy right out of the box.The planer makes super smooth cuts with no snipe.Dewalt has upgraded to a 3 knife model, but it is hard to see how they could improve on this one.The dust hood does a good job with my shop vac attached with very few chips ending up on the table.
The only negative I have found so far is the carrying handles. If you don't carry it level the planer can shift on the telescopic handles and pinch your hand. ... Read more

From the moment you get your hands on it, you'll appreciate thequality of this router. The handles offer total comfort and confidenceas you guide this 11-1/4-pound beauty around. Its soft start means nojerking, even when you start it at its peak speed of 22,000 rpm (itsbottom range is 8,000 rpm). The 15 amp motor is quieter than you'dexpect in a router this size, and the rack-and-pinion depth adjustmentDeWalt is known and loved for comes equipped with a magnified scale anda micro fine-adjustment knob. The plunge mechanism is smooth assilk--better than on routers twice the price--and it would serveperfectly in a table or for freehand work. The 625 comes with 1/2- and1/4-inch collets, and when it's time to change the bit, you'll reallyappreciate the spindle-lock button; it's a big square with a fingerdepression, unlike most other routers that offer either two wrenches towrestle with or a small, sharp spindle-lock pin that leaves a red dentin your finger. Other nice features: one side of the base is roundedand one is flat, and it comes with a dust-extraction adapter. Thispiece of machinery truly is as close to flawless as a router can get.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

I was looking for a router for my router table.I looked at the DW at a tool store, and was not all that impressed.I ended up buying a Milwaukee 3.5 hp fixed base router, and could not be happier.Handling both at the same time left little choice in my mind. The Milwaukee is simply a lot better, and worth the extra $20.I've had the Milwaukee over a year, and I'm glad I bought it.It is pure quality. It is also made in the US.The DW is made in Taiwan. The difference in quality is dramitic.I must say, however, that it is light years better than a Hitachi.

I have owned this unit since 1999 and have used it strictly under a table.I consider myself an intermediate level woodworker, usually spending 4-6 hours per week in my shop, much of that time at the router table.I have never had an issue with this machine.I have used it to route anything from small parts with the 1/4 inch collet to making raised panel doors with a 3.5 inch rail and stile bits. The machine with its soft start and electronic speed control has never faulted on any type of cut. The one-wrench quick change collet feature is nice as well, seeing as how I have to remove the router from under the table to change bits. The fine depth adjuster is another must if you plan on mounting it to a table. The adjustment mechanism is very smooth and easy to operate. If I had any complaint at all, it would be the ability to drop this unit into a router lift. There are not a lot of choices when it comes to accomodating this machine. However to get around that, I recently upgraded my old table to a Jessem Mast-R-Lift Excel with a PC 7518.I am convinced though that my reliable DW625 will still continue to get plenty of use in the shop. You cannot go wrong with this router.

i attempted to buy this router from amazon but I've got a nice story to tell you.I applied for and received amazon's credit card.It carries a $30.00 discount on my first purchase.I decided on the DeWalt 625 which carries a $ 25.00 discount.going through the checkout process I entered the DeWalt promo code DWLTCT4334Q4.The final page before "placing order" pops up only showing the $30.00 discount. After trying several more times I got disgusted and wrote to amazon's computer because I seriously doubt that there are any living, breathing, beings on theother end.I received a standard reply, "computer error" or "read the promo restrictions."Just for the heck of it I went through all the motions of placing the order on a neighbors account and sure enough at checkout the DeWalt discount appeared, not my $30.00 credit card offer because I didn't use my account. So we know that amazon honors the promo offer.I wrote the amazon computer a second time only to receivethe exact reply, verbatum.I know I will never get in touch with a real person at amazon, hence my amazon and "tool crib" days are history.I will pay the state tax and slightly higher price and buy locally. At least if I'm getting a snow job the salesman will be looking at me and he will be a living, breathing person. ... Editorial Review

This might be the most accurate, smartest, and safest after-market saw gauge we’ve ever seen. Instead of the protractor-type gauge that typically comes with a table saw, Osborne built theirs on a triangular model. When they say "rock solid, dead accurate," they’re not kidding: It’s guaranteed to be accurate to within 1/30th of a degree right out of the box. You’ll never have to attach another auxiliary fence to a miter gauge and worry about it warping. Clean, smooth, accurate crosscuts happen every time without hassle. Operation is as simple as your standard miter gauge, but with this ingenious system, even a beginner can’t make a miscut. Repeat angle cuts, and all your workpieces are interchangeable and identical. A telescoping extension means even long boards are fed true into the blade. No pro shop should be without this, and hobby woodworkers will love the results.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars complex, expensive, and somewhat disappointing
For an expensive miter gauge this one has several complications that diminish it's accuracy. It does a great job a 90 degrees, but when extended and angled the detents are off by over 1 degree in each direction...that's about the accuracy you can get from a cheap stock gauge, so what I basically paid for was a nice extendable crosscut fence.

This was the third gauge Osborne sent, and all three had a similar problem, plus one even had a slider bar that rocked.Osborne's customer service was not as responsive as I've come to expect from similar companies like Hartville, Lee Valley, Grizzly, etc.

The miter slot adjustment mechanisms work really well. The flip stop and extension fence are very good.I like the handle, supporting arm and the t-tracks.The cam adjuster that allows you to precisely dial the gauge in is also excellent...But considering the defective detents that determine the popular angle settings, I can't recommend this product because of it's flaws and price range. If I had it to do again, I'd have gone with the Woodhaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOTTA LOVE IT....
I have been researching a new miter gauge for almost 6 months. I had looked at most of the ones on the market, including the incra line, and Dewalt's copy of the EB-3 (seperate review). Couldn't find anyone who had an osborne in stock, so with a little whining I convinced my local woodworker's store to order a couple in. The problem began when the two units arrived at the store. All the people who work at this particular store are avid woodworkers in their own right. They assembled one of the miter gauges and gave it a try. It was perfect right out of the box. When I arrived several hours later to pick up my osborne miter gauge (they had told me when they would arrive), I had a hell of time prying one out of their hands. They have since ordered a dozen more, some for stock and some for employee's. I took home the one they had already assembled, as I planned on using it as soon as I got home. They had adjusted it to fit on the Jet supersaw..they had no slop and no rock. The face was 90 deg to the table and 90 deg to the blade. Since my saw is the Dewalt 746, I figured I would have some adjusting to do....WRONG....it slid into my table saw with no adjusting at all. It slides beautifully, with no side to side slop at all. I have no rocking, scraping and have noticed no flexing. The face is 90 to the table and 90 to my saw blade. I checked everything I could check and couldn't find one problem. So of course I figured I was doing something wrong. Can't be this good right out of the box, so I rechecked everything with another set of squares, ran a couple of pieces of pine thru on the 90 setting, perfect, cut a couple 45's, perfect, then the ultimate, 221/2"s, perfect. The last test was to let the Shop Dog sniff it and even he approved. I've had it a week now, made 8 square frames, 6 octagon frames, and 21 corner shelves. The only problem I've had is where to put the gauge when I'm not using it. It does take up a good amount of space if you don't "fold it" for storage, and I am strapped for space.(My saw table is one of my main assembly areas).
I find myself reaching for the Osborn miter gauge instead of one of my sleds now. I would and have reccommended this miter gauge to anyone who is looking for the ultimate upgrade in miter gauges. Its solid, well built and easy to use. "NUFF SAID"
UPDATE...I have been making a lot of traditional style jewelry boxes lately...Christmas ya know...with mitered corners and insert trays. Lot of repetitive cutting. I like to cut my box pieces from one piece of wood so the grain chases all around the box. I made an extra flip stop for my miter gauge so I could set two lengths on the gauge. Now I cut an end, flip the first stop up and cut the front, back to the first stop, cut...well you get the picture. The process is repeated when cutting the miters, get perfectly matched pieces every time. What a time and effort saver. I am going to try and order a second factory flip stop, as my homemade one is a little clunky.
Still highly recommend this miter gauge.
ANOTHER UPDATE...Called Summerville Design...their number is listed in the back of the instruction manual...To get a second flip stop, you have to copy down the part numbers...you'll need two of the plastic washers....and order it as parts. Their customer service is excellent and the parts totaled $12., including shipping.Someone there took the time to assemble the stop before shipping it...thats customer service! If you are like me and cut a lot of multiple lengths from the same piece of wood this is a valuable addition to your miter gauge, and inexpensive to boot. This whole thing just keeps getting better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the EB-4
I have some issues with both the design and execution of this miter guage.

First problem is with the guide bar.The adjustment is nearly impossible. I had to run the screws nearly completely through the bar to get any adjustment at all. Then the screws were rubbing on the bottom of the miter slot. What a loud grinding noise that makes! This is what causes the rocking of the miter bar in the slot that is mentioned in most other reviews. The threads in the guide bar are so bad out of the box that the allen screw threads are chewed completely off so that they are nearly impossible to turn. The company's solution to this problem is to include an addional set of adjustment screws. This was no help -it just chewed up those threads too. I removed the bar and examined it closely with a magnifying glass and found that there is lots of slag from the laser cutting of the adjustment slots and threads. I had to spend quite a bit of time with a dremel grinder to fix the threaded holes. Once all of the burs were removed, new screws (purchased from the hardware store) turned easily and adjustment was smooth and precise.

They call the design rock solid, but that is not what I find. If you look at the photos of this tool you can see that the black bar with the markings slide in and out of the red channel.A button on the bottom of the red arm is spring loaded and pushes into holes drilled into the bottom of the black bar for standard angles. You then tighten a thumb screw to lock the setting. You can move the thing to a 45deg. setting in either direction. If you swing the aluminum fence toward you, the black bar move into the red channel. If you swing it away from you to 45 deg. (thy way I would prefer to cut 45s) the black bar moves out of the channel. The design problem pops up in this position. At 45 deg. there is only a little more than 1 inch of the black bar inside the red channel. Even with the thumb screw very tight, the connection between the black and red arms flexes with light pressure at the end of the fence, causing the fence to move approx 2 or 3 degrees and stay there. You can tweak this baby until the end of time and this flexing at this 45 deg. setting will still be there. This is more of a problem with longer, heavier peices of wood.A work-around is to never use that 45 deg. setting. Always swing the bar toward you from the 0 degree (90 deg) setting. Then, of course you must be careful and NOT push the miter guide too far because the black bar will hit the blade. This is why the other settig would be best to use.Additionally, the post at the rear of the bar, to which the red channel attaches, also flexes in this 45 deg. position, but it appears to be the result of the poorly fitting connection between the black and red bars rather that the cause (my opinion) I read a review here which stated that they were able to remove some of the slop by peening the shoulder of that post, and retightening it, but I have not yet tried that. Scratch a star for this design defect.

I was able to perform the Quality Control functions on the guide bar holes myself, but I find it unbelievabe that the company solution is to throw in a few extra allen screws! Scratch another star for really sloppy QC.

I decided to give the Canadian company a call and see if there is a solution to the flexing problem at the 45 degree setting. I told the girl who answered the phone that I was having some problems and she asked me to explain to her. I explained that I had chewed up all 6 screws and that the mounting post at the rear of the guide bat was flexing at the 45 deg. setting. She said she would send out some new screws and a new rear post. I asked for the post because I wanted to try to tighten the post by peening or some other way.A stouter post would overcome some of the flexing that is inherent in the design IMO. That was a Friday. She said the parts would go out Monday. I waited 10 days befor calling back. That time I got the answering maching for Customer Servidce. I left a message asking about the parts and left my phone. That was another 10 days ago. Not a word! Scratch another star for the worst Customer Service!

In summary, I should not have tried to resolve the issues with the company - I should have returned this thing but it is too late now.I can live with the flaws, because, after all, it is a woodworking tool, not a machine tool. However, if you are overly anal about accuracy, you might want to look at something else. Good luck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great unit, horrible instructions.
Fantastic unit.Very well built and effective in dust removal.Wonderful advantage in being able to swing the arm out of the way and/or easily remove it if necessary.Only draw back is the lack of instrucitons. No explination of what screws, bolts, nuts go where and with what.Only one diagram for cross member assembly nothing else.Would highly recommend this to others. Not impossible to figure out what goes where but a disapointment in slowing down assembly time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dust free!
I was somewhat reserved in my expectations after reading the manufacturers' literature. There is very good visibility while making cuts, and maybe a teaspoon of dust has slipped past the dust collector/hood.Really sweet! The only drawback was the manufacturer's assembly instructions, count on figuring it out yourself.
