    Editorial Review

This fixed-base router from DeWalt has all the design features to make it a popular choice with woodworkers and professional carpenters. The tool's powerhouse is a smooth-running, 11 amp, 1-3/4-horsepower motor that offers more than enough power to make precise, clean cuts in tough hardwoods without bogging down. A micro-fine adjustment ring is used to adjust the depth of cut in 1/64-inch increments, so the motor itself doesn't need to be turned, and as a consequence, the position of the switch and cord doesn't change every time your cut-depth does. This same motor can be used with DeWalt's DW6182 plunge base or their DW6183 D-handle base, and DeWalt has thoughtfully made motor removal and base changing a quick and easy, tool-free operation. Both the motor housing and the base are made of precision-machined aluminum for durability, and the motor housing has nickel plating to ensure smooth depth adjustments. As finishing touches, the toggle switch is sealed against dust penetration, and the cord is fully detachable for use with other DeWalt bases and to protect it in storage. DeWalt's engineers and designers clearly spent a lot of time making sure this router package addressed every need a woodworker could have, and the result is a tool that stands with the best in its price range. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Evolution
I have owned 4 different DeWalt routers which I enjoyed despite limitations that I found in all of them (weight, power, ease of use, etc.)I still, however considered the previous DeWalt routers to be superior to both Porter Cable and Bosch routers.

When DeWalt came out with their new 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 hp routers with multiple bases to compete with PC,I had to try them.

I decided on the 1 3/4 hp, as I have their 2 hp,and have never liked the weight of the unit.It always felt cumbersome doing light work.Upon receiveing this little router,I mounted the fixed base underneath one of my router tables, and kept the plunge base out for travelling work. Here are my impressions:

1.)This has plenty of smooth power to run virtually anything you fire its way.I was able to smoothly run a cabinet panelling bit through MDF (I would not dare to do so through hardwood that is what the 3hp router is for).On sit I ran 3/4" roundovers, 3/4" straight fluted bits, etc. without incident. This router has the power to do almost anything you need on site, and can run most bits you need in a router table.

2.)The changing of the motor from base to base takes a couple of times to get used to,but is smarter than the current Porter Cable model.Changing router bits requires two wrenches, however, the detachable cord and flat base allow it to rest in a flat and stable position.

3.)They made the base compatbile with Porter Cable bases so most of the base attachments you can buy for PC also work with the DeWalt.

Bottom line is I got rid of all other routers I owned except for the DeWalt 3hp (for panelling),and have two fixed bases mounted under Rockler router tables, one plunge and one fixed base for on site work, and a total of 5 motors to put wherever I need them.It has truly been a universal fit for all of my routing needs! ... This router combo pack from DeWalt has all the design features to make it a popular choice with woodworkers and professional carpenters. The tool's powerhouse is a smooth-running, 11 amp, 1-3/4-horsepower motor that offers more than enough power to make precise, clean cuts in tough hardwood materials without bogging down. When using the fixed base, a micro-fine adjustment ring is used to dial in the height setting at 1/64-inch increments, so the motor itself doesn't need to be turned, and as a consequence, the position of the switch and cord doesn't change every time your cut-depth does. This kit also comes with DeWalt's DW6182 plunge router base--making it essentially two routers at one price--and DeWalt has thoughtfully made motor removal and base changing a quick and easy, tool-free operation. The plunge base features DeWalt's through-the-column dust collection system (which is also used in their popular DW621 dedicated plunge router). This efficient feature quickly removes the dust, leaving you with better cut visibility and a cleaner workspace. The plunge action itself is as smooth as you'd want, and the micro-fine depth adjustment offers precision to 5/128 inch. In addition, there's a built-in, five-position adjustable turret stop for use in making repeated or stepped plunge cuts. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good solid router combo
I have Porter also, and this DeWalt one works as well if not better. Very easy to change the motor, adjust, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Routing Made Easy
I bought the Bosch 1617EVSPK 2-1/4-Horsepower Router Combo and was impressed until, after approx 5 hours of light usage it simply quit on me. I've been wanting a second router to dedicate to under a table, so I decided while my Bosch was inthe shop to pick up this DeWalt. I'm really happy with it; the only feature I prefer in the Bosch is the soft start; the DeWalt tends to give a little jump when it's switched on. The next model up has more HP and I believe incorporates the soft start feature. As far as HP, I don't miss it, though I've not really thrown anything too solid at it. My impression is that it could handle most medium-sized routing tasks with ease.
The plunge base is the smoothest I've come across and the motor itself feels solid. A router is essentially a pretty simple tool, and the DeWalt keeps it simple. Switching between bases is easy, depth adjustment is easy and intuitive. Also a concentricity guide is included, which Bosch sells as a seperate accessory.
All told, I've found this router kit a pleasure to work with and a great value. I have to agree with a previous reviewer, though: the case is maybe a little unnecessarily humongous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super router
What a great router.I purchased a Porter-Cable 2hp plunge router 97529 and thought it would be great. Boy was I wrong, junk, that's all I have to say about that thing.
Although this router is 1 ¾ hp it acts like the big boys. I've used this router with a 3" panel bit on maple and it worked fine. The plunge base is very smooth and the locking leaver works well. Even if male hormones dictate the purchase of a more powerful router, don't, this is all you need. ... Read more

DEWALT DW708 12" Double-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw

    Editorial Review

DeWalt packs it all into this 12-inch compound miter saw: the big blade, the double bevel, the double rail slide. Very impressive. Finish carpenters who want to miter crown molding (up to 5-1/4 inches) vertically and framers who demand a 12-inch crosscut capacity will love this saw's 12-inch blade. The double bevel, of course, means you flip the saw instead of the wood, a great feature for those working with long molding or in confined spaces. The saw bevels to 45 degrees both ways and has the ability to bevel up to 48 if the need arises. The double rail slide is definitely burlier than the old single rail design. Both rails slide on self-cleaning, dust-sealed bearings, too.

What really gets us is the weight and balance of this saw: it slides smoothly through cuts, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels lightly (all of which speak to the saw's excellent design). You can miter 50 degrees left, 60 degrees right. We also appreciated the cam-lock miter gauge on this saw--the handle simply clamps down, which makes switching angles noticeably quicker than with a twist-lock miter.

DeWalt's D-handle is designed for right-handed use, but the trigger is big enough to use comfortably with your left hand if a particular cut requires it. The saw also has a depth-stop adjuster in case you have to cut a quick dado or two at the job site. The easy-to-read stainless-steel miter scale, with 11 positive stops allows you to lock in the most common angles quickly and, thanks to the cam-lock miter, it's also easy to dial in precise cuts just over or under the positive stop--a feature finish carpenters, in particular, will love. The electric blade stops the blade quickly, which saves time and makes work safer. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... 1-0 out of 5 stars INNACURATE AS HELL...just lke all dewalt tools
The vertical sliders was the dumbest idea going. not only a terrible saw altogether, but the thing wobbled like hell!
I'd either go with the Bosch or the Makita over this piece of trash.Total waste of money!
I have yet to have a good experience with ANY of DeWalt's tools.
I know go with Bosch/ Makita.
Overall, save yourself time and money: DON'T BUY DEWALT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Face The Facts
DeWalt makes a great miter saw any way that you look at it.I know the non-conformists disagree, but face the facts, DeWalt miter saws are solid performers. I've owned my 12 inch slider for nearly three years, and it works perfectly.I purchased a stablemate stand for it and the two go together very nicely.I like the power it has and the accuracy is superb. If you do knock the alignment out, it is easy to adjust. While I wouldn't touch a DeWalt jig saw with a 10 foot pole, their miter saws are top-notch.If you are doing a lot of intricate millwork, I would also buy the DeWalt 10 inch miter saw for increased accuracy on smaller moldings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love at First Cut
Always finding them too expensive I had never hoped to buy a compound miter saw. But the apparent quality of a nice looking Delta for $79.00 was hard to pass up, though I knew something was probably wrong and then I would be hooked on the dam thing. Sure enough, the value of a too-cheap to be true saw was revealed in the angle cuts. The machine was obviously Not True, so I returned it and started some more serious looking, this time with a square in my pocket. Measuring shelf displays only gives a rough idea, but it's a start, I.E. I got suspicious of any saw minus a blade or that had a bolted-on display blocking the throat. When I spotted the DeWalt, it was simply the only choice for the money, bang-on accurate just sitting there. The same was true when I set it up, most impressive. It was also one of the few saws that swung beyond 45 degrees each way, I don't know if that will be important someday or not. It is also one of the only saws that has a separate steel plate for the table index, all the others are cut or cast into the base. This will be important someday. So far it's a pleasure to use, and yes, the dust collector is funky and knocks stuff over. All features are exactly as I would want, built in wrench holder, easy access to the blade, excellent finish. It seems lasers are still the new fad, but it also seems unequipped models are becoming less expensive. Maybe a pro could find fault, but the DW703 has my vote.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw for a great price
This saw does everything it's supposed to do and the price is great. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that dust collection isn't very good, but it's not a huge problem and it's probably no worse than other similar saws. Just be sure to empty the dust collection bag often and it will minimize the problem. I've had this saw for a little over a year and it has always performed very well. I've even been able to cut 4x4 stock with one cut and without any problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for the Money
After using this saw heavily for over a year (both for rough construction and woodworking), it's time for an honest review. This saw certainly is a great value, but it helps to know its little quirks, to get the most benefit from it.For general construction and framing, the miter and bevel settings are not too critical, and they were accurate out of the box for me. To cut a 4x4, you only need to manually raise the blade guard and hold it up, to get the workpiece up against the fence for cutting. The supplied blade will cut tons of softwood for framing, and the saw's portability makes it easy to carry anywhere. For woodworking, however, you will probably want to zero the miter and bevel adjustments for best results. The manual recommends using a square to check the blade's angle for the bevel, but you will discover that it's next to impossible to raise the blade guard, hold a square, and adjust the locking nut and bolt, all at the same time. A much better method is to cut a 2x6 and then flip one side upside down, putting the cut end up against the other cut end.If the bevel is not square, there will be a gap at either the top or bottom of the cut sides, and you can adjust the locking nut and bolt to eliminate the gap.In the same way, the miter adjustment can be checked by crosscutting a 2x6, flipping one side, and checking for gaps against the fence, or facing the operator. If you plan to make picture frames, router templates, etc., you can get both the miter and bevel accurate enough to perfectly crosscut an 11" wide workpiece, simply by flipping the workpiece upside down, after cutting one side. But don't expect to do this on the "out of the box" settings!DeWalt should be commended for making such a quality saw at a reasonable price, and whether for construction or woodworking, you will not be disappointed with this one. ... Tired of transporting a bulky miter saw stand from one job siteto the next? The DeWalt DW723 may be the answer. Lightweight and rugged, the all-aluminum stand measures a mere 5-1/2 feet out of the box andweighs in at just 38 pounds. However, when fully assembled, it cansupport boards up to 16 feet long and a full 400 pounds of weight. Thekey to its strength lies in the stand's retractable legs, which locksecurely in place then tuck away when not in use, as well as its slidingcam-lock extensions, which provide a full 16 feet of length whenassembled. A carrying handle makes the stand easy to transport whenfully retracted. Just throw it in the back of your pickup and it's goodto go. Assembly is quick and easy, too. We had ours up and running in amatter of seconds. Mounting brackets adjust to fit most miter saws, makingthis the ideal workspace for the professional or do-it-yourselfer on thego. --Carl Thress ... Finally broke down and purchased the DW723 stand.Already my back thanks me.I did some trim work in my basement and what a difference.Took me 5 minutes to setup and it's portability makes it easy to move around where needed.Outstanding design. There are other stands out there, but save your money and get this one, you won't be disappointed!

Sometimes, half an inch makes all the difference. But that's not the only reason to step up to the 735. Its powerful 10,000 rpm motor will handle anything you feed it--oak, walnut, exotics--with absolute ease. The three-knife cutterhead will make 96 or 179 cuts per inch, depending on which speed setting you choose. Mess is minimized with the fan-assisted chip ejection, which literally vacuums chips off the cutter-head and blows them out the exhaust. The 735's automatic carriage lock will save you from snipe by reducing the movement that causes it--what a great idea. We also love the redesigned thickness scale--it's big and super-visible, even in poor lighting. Those who do repetitive cuts will appreciate the turret depth-stop; set your most-used cuts to it once and you're always assured of accuracy. The home woodworker will be thrilled, and the professional's expectations will be more than met. This is a winner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Little Planer
I got my DW734 on sale at a great price and have used it in my shop with great success. I have used it on all kinds of wood hard and soft and it has done an excellent job. So far no need to sharpen or replace the blades, although I would not have expected to at this point

I wouldn't even consider purchasing this planer without the optional infeed and out feed extension tables. I think Dewalt should consider including them as part of the package rather than as an option.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad design backed up with terrible support
The planner arived and I was able to use it right away. The snipe was not bad and the finish was fairly good. There is barely any noticable finish diference between the two speeds on hardwoods. After less than 100 board feet, this all changed.

The sprockets are made from sintered hardened powder metal. They break under light loads and are expensive to replace, even though they are probably purchased for under 20 cents by Dewalt.Dewalt has now changed to a different material sprocket that so far is holding up.It is too bad that they did not stand behind their product and issue conversion kits or issue a recall for the known design flaw.

The rollers are also weak.Even when removing 1/64" on narrow boards, they do not have the force needed to push the wood past even brand new knives.I'm forced with manually pushing the boards thru the planner. That is until I purchase a new one - not Dewalt.

The knife design is poor and prone to breaking down the knifes. They can not be sharped. They have an edge on both sides, so you can use them twice at $45 a pop.

The on-line service is a joke. The narrest service center is an hour away for me and will require taking a days vacation due to their limited hours of operation and no weekends.

Save your self the headache, and don't by this piece of junk.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kevin - Appleton, Wisconsin
Decent planer, but very lousy knives.Planing less then 100 board feet on hemlock and white pine and the blades are already junk, plus they're expensive to replace.DeWalt should really construct some better knives

    Editorial Review

The first thing we look for in a table saw--portable or otherwise--is an accurate, smooth-working fence, and the telescoping fence on DeWalt's 10-inch portable table saw impressed us immediately. Fully extended, the fence delivers a 24-1/2-inch rip capacity, letting you cut to the center of a 4-by-8-foot sheet, while the rack-and-pinion design lets you make microadjustments fast and accurately. We also liked how the fence rides on both the front and back rails so that it's parallel to the blade at all times. The telescoping rails retract, too--when the job's done, the saw is easy and safe to transport.

Like most 10-inch portable saws, DeWalt's has a 3-1/8-inch depth capacity at 90 degrees and a 2-1/4-inch capacity at 45. The 15 amp motor cranks plenty of torque and doesn't lag when cutting hardwood or pressure-treated stock. Performance aside, DeWalt clearly also kept safety in mind when designing this saw. Its oversize on/off switch is positioned so you can easily bump it off with your knee if you get into trouble making a cut. The arbor on Dewalt's saw also has the capacity for a full dado stack. Add to that the saw's dust-collection hookup and sturdy steel stand, and you've got a portable table saw that can hold its own in the shop. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This saw is so awesome !!
After using this saw for only a few hours, I am so in love with it !! It is well worth the money. I do think that for the price Dewalt should include the outfeed support. I also would have preferred a 4" dust port, but hey, you can't have everything.
The rack and pinion fence is right on the money. Dewalt has done it again. They make good stuff !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw
It's light, easy to use and the rip fence on gear tracks is excellent. No place to wind the cord is kinda crappy, and the blade angle adjustment slides rather than having something like the knob used for the rip fence for adjustments. The frying pan coating on top doesn't last long if you don't wipe it down with some WD-40 once in a while. I've used it as a jobsite saw and to build cabinets, speaker boxes, cut plexiglass, etc. It's not a $1500 cabinet saw but if you screw a sheet of plywood to a couple sawhorses as a outfeed table and take some care in your cuts, it works awesome for something one person can carry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic saw for its class
I've had this saw for a year now.I have a small shop and didn't want to sacrifice the permanent square footage for a stationary cabinet model. So I was only looking for a portable...but a good portable.I am not a professional in any trade, but am a very seasoned DIY'er, particularly with woodworking.I've made a few pieces of furniture with the saw and I don't regret its purchase at all. Here are my thoughts on this item:

    POSITIVES

    1) Portability, portability, portability.I usually have it set up on the leg stand in my shop, buy have needed to transport it mutliple times either inside my house or to other sites I worked at.

    2) The 15 amp motor is impressively beefy, considering it is a portable, and cuts quite nicely through any wood I've tried so far (including oak and birch).

    3) The folding legs are easy to set up and EXTREMELY sturdy when the saw is on and properly bolted on (bolts are not included though...)

    4) The fence is great.Easily adjusts and stays true and parallel (a minor flaw though...see below).

    NEGATIVES

    1) When saw dust gets built up on the pinion gears for the fence adjusting mechanism, the gear(s) sometimes slip over one tooth and the fence gets out of parallel. However, you'll easily know when it happens (if you don't notice it by eye, you'll quickly notice the wood binding up in the blade!)However, it is a quick and easy fix by hand to put it back parallel...and impetus to keep your tools clean.

    2) The blade guard is relatively cheaply built and a nuisance. Although it is a cardinal sin, I never use the guard.

    3) The open ended arbor wrench stripped open a little bit after a few months of moderate use.I switched a lot between a ripping, cross cutting and dado blades when making two pieces of furniture. The mouth on the open ended wrench seemed to have stretched out a little and would slip off the arbor when I was trying to tighten/loosen the arbor nut. After banging up my knuckles a few times, I ordered a new wrench from the DeWalt service center near me (only costs about $2).Unfortunately, a normal open-ended wrench is too wide to fit in...you need to use the thin DeWalt wrench.

    4) The combo blade that comes with it is relatively cheap. It cuts fine through most woods, but leaves blade marks. Also, there is more splintering/tearing than I would like when cutting through plywood.I highly recommend splurging on a Forrest Woodworker II blade and dampener.Flawless cuts on this was with the Forrest blade.

Overall, I absolutely love this tool. The price seems high (and sort of is considering it is portable), but the DeWalt quality is worth it compared to the much cheaper Ryobi and Makita models. The negatives I have listed are fairly minor; mere nuisances with easy fixes.Be sure to check the fine tuning of the fence width ruler and parallelness of the fence.I had to tweak them a little before I first used the saw to get everything just right. If you need portability and want to save space but don't want to sacrifice a lot of the benefits of a cabinet saw, this tool is a must! ... From the moment you get your hands on it, you'll appreciate thequality of this router. The handles offer total comfort and confidenceas you guide this 11-1/4-pound beauty around. Its soft start means nojerking, even when you start it at its peak speed of 22,000 rpm (itsbottom range is 8,000 rpm). The 15 amp motor is quieter than you'dexpect in a router this size, and the rack-and-pinion depth adjustmentDeWalt is known and loved for comes equipped with a magnified scale anda micro fine-adjustment knob. The plunge mechanism is smooth assilk--better than on routers twice the price--and it would serveperfectly in a table or for freehand work. The 625 comes with 1/2- and1/4-inch collets, and when it's time to change the bit, you'll reallyappreciate the spindle-lock button; it's a big square with a fingerdepression, unlike most other routers that offer either two wrenches towrestle with or a small, sharp spindle-lock pin that leaves a red dentin your finger. Other nice features: one side of the base is roundedand one is flat, and it comes with a dust-extraction adapter. I was looking for a router for my router table.I looked at the DW at a tool store, and was not all that impressed.I ended up buying a Milwaukee 3.5 hp fixed base router, and could not be happier.Handling both at the same time left little choice in my mind. The Milwaukee is simply a lot better, and worth the extra $20.I've had the Milwaukee over a year, and I'm glad I bought it.It is pure quality. It is also made in the US.The DW is made in Taiwan. The difference in quality is dramitic.I must say, however, that it is light years better than a Hitachi.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a rock
I have owned this unit since 1999 and have used it strictly under a table.I consider myself an intermediate level woodworker, usually spending 4-6 hours per week in my shop, much of that time at the router table.I have never had an issue with this machine.I have used it to route anything from small parts with the 1/4 inch collet to making raised panel doors with a 3.5 inch rail and stile bits. The machine with its soft start and electronic speed control has never faulted on any type of cut. The one-wrench quick change collet feature is nice as well, seeing as how I have to remove the router from under the table to change bits. The fine depth adjuster is another must if you plan on mounting it to a table. The adjustment mechanism is very smooth and easy to operate. If I had any complaint at all, it would be the ability to drop this unit into a router lift. There are not a lot of choices when it comes to accomodating this machine. However to get around that, I recently upgraded my old table to a Jessem Mast-R-Lift Excel with a PC 7518.I am convinced though that my reliable DW625 will still continue to get plenty of use in the shop. You cannot go wrong with this router.

i attempted to buy this router from amazon but I've got a nice story to tell you.I applied for and received amazon's credit card.It carries a $30.00 discount on my first purchase.I decided on the DeWalt 625 which carries a $ 25.00 discount.going through the checkout process I entered the DeWalt promo code DWLTCT4334Q4.The final page before "placing order" pops up only showing the $30.00 discount. After trying several more times I got disgusted and wrote to amazon's computer because I seriously doubt that there are any living, breathing, beings on theother end.I received a standard reply, "computer error" or "read the promo restrictions."Just for the heck of it I went through all the motions of placing the order on a neighbors account and sure enough at checkout the DeWalt discount appeared, not my $30.00 credit card offer because I didn't use my account. So we know that amazon honors the promo offer.I wrote the amazon computer a second time only to receivethe exact reply, verbatum.I know I will never get in touch with a real person at amazon, hence my amazon and "tool crib" days are history.I will pay the state tax and slightly higher price and buy locally. At least if I'm getting a snow job the salesman will be looking at me and he will be a living, breathing person. ... Editorial Review

This DeWalt circular saw is a rugged tool designed with professional carpenters' needs in mind. It has a 15 amp motor that produces a whopping 2,075 watts, which is equivalent to about 2-3/4 horsepower. In less scientific terms those numbers mean this saw can slice through lumber like a tornado through a trailer park. If that's a little too fast for you, it also comes with an electric brake for quick stops. The generous 5-1/2-inch base pivots for depth of cut and bevels on a ball-joint mechanism that offers smoother, faster adjustments than the simple hinge arrangement typically found on other saws. It has a bevel capacity of 0 to 50 degrees, and--like the depth-of-cut gauge--the bevel gauge can be easily recalibrated if the saw takes a tumble on the job. Depth-of-cut adjustments are made by unscrewing the front handle a bit, adjusting to the desired depth, and screwing it back down tight. This operation is so smooth it can be done without even changing your grip on the saw, reducing downtime between cuts. The saw's construction is solid throughout and it should be capable of living a long life on even the toughest job sites. Blade changes are quick thanks in part to the easy-to-reach shaft lock button; however, onboard storage of the blade-changing wrench would be an improvement. This is a great tool for serious professionals in need of serious cutting power. At 12.3 pounds, it isn't the lightest model available, but big power doesn't come in small packages, and 7-1/4 inch sidewinder circular saws don't get any burlier than this. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great saw
Well I had this saw for 10 years now and I love it.The flat alum base doesnt scratch the work and the adjustment works well. I've used this saw on a plywood base like a tablesaw and it preformed well. The electric brake continues to work, it's a nice safety feature. It is a professional quality saw and I would buy this saw again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Premature burnout
I have had this saw for a couple of years and used it only a few dozen times on plywood and press board. While cutting a countertop (easy cut) the armature started throwing sparks. I was quite disappointed after spending this much for a heavy duty saw and only getting a few uses out of it. The new armature is over $60. I have saw other reviews on their saws with the same story, sounds like a manufacturing problem that should be addressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful saw
I'm not a pro, so was a little leery about the price on this saw. Like others have said, though, it was love at first sight (or first feel) when I picked it up for the first time. It just feels good in the hand, fairly heavy, but with a nice balance. And when I first tried the depth adjustment mechanism, that about sealed the deal for me - set the depth you want without hardly moving your hands!

I also highly recommend the electric brake. In fact that was the main reason I was looking for a saw - my old skilsaw would spin for almost ever after cutting - which made me nervous. Now I'm used to the brake and wouldn't have a saw without it. In fact, once in a while the brake will fail to engage (I think if I let go of the trigger too slow or something) and it kind of bugs me; I'll usually flip it on again to get it to work.

Incidently, the brake isn't designed to be like a brake in a chainsaw (instantaneous stop) since it still takes a couple of seconds before the blade stop. It does add to safety, however, compared to a free-spinning model.

The saw seems to have good power - I think nothing of ripping full lenth 2-inch stock and it doesn't seem to phase it, just keeps piling up the dust. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Portable Powerhouse
The specs say 15 Amps at 120 Volts. That gives 15x120=1800 watts. Divide by 745.7 (the number of watts per horsepower, by definition) and the result is about 2.414 horsepower. Apparently this "2-3/4 horsepower" machine makes about 0.336 horsepower out of thin air. That'll be great for on-site use (at reduced power) if no electricity is available. Gotta get one today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product
First let me say that if it is Dewalt, I want it! I purchased this compressor to use to fix my roof after the hurricanes this year and to build my new house in a few months. This unit is great! When they said it had a 15 second recovery time, they were not kidding. And it puts out the air. It is built well. It is a little heavy, but that is OK. It is also not too loud. Great product!

Cordless screwdrivers are nothing new, but this model from DeWalt puts a heavy-duty twist on the idea, and professionals are sure to appreciate it. DeWalt's 7.2-volt has the most powerful battery pack of any cordless screwdriver on the market, without sacrificing compact design. This screwdriver gets into all the tight spots cordless drills can't, and unlike other cordless screwdrivers, it won't leave you wishing for more power once there. Its 80 inch-pounds of torque is beyond even the toughest competing model, and with 16 clutch settings, it's easy to avoid stripping out screws. We also like this tool's quick-change keyless chuck and the extra maneuverability provided by the two-position handle. This is a generous kit, including the driver, a charger, two batteries, two bits, and a tough case. It may not be a revolution, but it does seem to be the first serious cordless screwdriver designed with professionals in mind. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful tool
I love using this driver. Its got plenty of umph for its size.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cordless Screwdriver!!!
I own numerous cordless drills and cordless screwdrivers. This one really fills the gap.Light weight and strong power, for its size.I do a lot of electrical work, which entails drywall repair amongst other things. It has enough power to drive drywall screws in, yet small enough to get into those small places.I wouldn't sheet rock a room but it's great for small jobs.Attaching cabinet hinges, electrical work and driving hex nuts, it works great in all applications.Really beats the pants off of the B&D 3 volt screw drivers. The clutch has excellent range. At the 1 setting you can drive screws into a switch face plate without breaking the plate. The higher numbers correspond almost exactly to the release pressure of my other DeWALT drills.

I knocked off one star due to the poor quick release design.By the way, it hasn't been fixed. When you push the sleeve back, towards the screw driver, it releases the bit.Like others have said, when you bump it or put it in your tool belt the bit can release. It hasn't been a huge problem, just an annoying issue. The problem is that there is a small spring that helps release the bit.So it shoots it across the room.It really doesn't make any sense, since their impact drivers have the release mechanism going in the opposite direction. That said, I would buy this again and recommend it to anyone.Hopefully, some day, DeWALT will act on these reviews. For the price this is a great deal. The batteries have long run times and the charger is the latest 3 mode version which allows you to leave the battery in the charger all the time without damaging the battery. In fact that is what they recommend, keep one in the charger at all times. It charges, conditions and then maintains a trickle charge after that.I wish that I would have purchase this item long ago.Have fun.

Update:I have now been using this tool for about 6 months. It still works flawlessly.I would like to add a note on the quick release.I think that DeWALT's thinking on the way the bit releases is for ease of use and quick action.Typically if you are using this tool, you will be changing from flat head to phillips again and again.By tapping the release the bit quickly pops out and to attach a new one you just shove it in.If, like on their impact driver, you had a locking mechanism it would be more difficult to release and install the bit. This is supposed to be for light duty work. This cordless screwdriver is now the first tool into my bag for any project.I can't imagine leaving home without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic screwdriver
After using this screwdriver for over a year now, I can agree with the other reviewers--that this is a great tool! I also thought that 7.2v would be wimpy, but it isn't! It beats using a drill to run the screws. Now I carry a cordless drill and this screwdriver in a bag to every task. Highly recommend! ... Read more

The DeWalt cordless 18-volt variable-speed jig saw is built with operator convenience in mind. Start with a keyless shoe that slides back and forth for cutting flush in tight spaces. Add to that a comfortable grip, which provides greater stability and control. Throw in clear markings every 15 degrees left and right of center that make it easy to find just the right angle for the job. Put it all together, and what you get is a pretty handy jig saw with a surprising amount of power (up to 2,000 spm) for a cordless. The unit weighs just 7.3 pounds and is easy to operate. Two orbital settings provide quicker, more accurate cuts in softer materials such as plastic and wood, while a straight-line setting is ideal for cutting metal and other hard surfaces. A removable plastic shoe cover protects easily scratched surfaces and locks securely into place for easy use, while a built-in dust blower clears debris ahead of the cut for better visibility. All in all, an impressive performer.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and powerful performer - but not terribly straight
I'm reviewing the DeWalt European 18v version (ELU) of this jig saw and I must say that it is truly a versatile and very powerful cordless jig saw but the trade-off, in my opinion, is that you can't ask this particular saw to do what -- say a Bosch 1584AVS -- corded jig saw can do. If you can live with certain limitations (a pronounced tendency to veer or wander especially if you try to follow a guide or push it along, an almost annoying plastic cutting guide that vibrates off repeatedly in operation, limited cutting power especially in thick materials like MDF, and some above-average vibration in thinner materials) then this jig saw warrants a much closer look. I'm a firm believer in buying items that fulfill their intended purpose, i.e. don't try to train a cat to bark like a dog, and so the portability, convenience and overall power more than offset this saw's shortcomings. If you a serious jig saw user, then you really should opt for a corded model with more power and better overall performance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tranny job
Saw arrived 4 PM Friday. Tried Sat. AM. Shipped back Monday PM. Dewalt said it had a misaligned transmission. It's corded counterpart has been my pleasure. This made all of 1" of cut before I detected a problem. The saw would not run beside a cutting guide. The blade was not parallel to the shoe. This is carelessness by Dewalt. It should not have been shipped in such a state. When I got home from UPS I found an e-mail from Amazon telling me that they had already shipped a replacement. I look forward to what I hope will be a sound, well aligned saw. It's corded brother is.
    About 3 weeks later:
The replacement saw arrived quickly. Like the first saw, it is nice to use. But, like the first saw, the blade was set at an angle to the axis of the saw. Clearly this is not Amazons fault. They shipped a new saw upon reciept of my return request. Perhaps they got a bad lot. As they had replaced this item once, I was not about to dump it back on them. I called DeWalt. They seem to hire the cheapest kid they can find. He was not totally unknowledgeable, and was polite and sympathetic. All he could offer was to suggest that I contact the warranty center. When I looked them up on the net I found an old friend that was nearby and factory certified. He got the job & will do it under warranty at no cost to me. But I'll be waiting a couple weeks to get it back. He agreed that there was no excuse for the misalignment. The saw has weaknesses, as described in other reviews. But, it is stable in the cut, has good power, is easy to guide and a wonderful convienence. I used it for a few days before taking it to the shop. If you never nail down a cutting guide to deal with a problem spot or clamp one to sheet goods, then, you will not notice the misalignment. I've not lost a blade to pull out on this {only a few days of use} nor on my corded version of the same saw. The locking system is a little clumsy. The convience of tool free blade change is worth the trouble caused by the lack of clearance when you pull up the "crank". The big problem is that it is hard to get a good grip on the "crank" to be able to pull up hard enough to get the blade well locked in. The angle adjustment on the shoe could be improved with a bit of thought. This saw is basically a winner. DeWalt just got sloppy at the finish. This is intended as a wake up call to them. If you have such problems I hope you will write a letter of complaint to help refocus their attention on quality, which does include attention to detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Use Carefully
The sole plate of this unit has a poor locking mechanism. The lever releases randomly and the angle of cut can change in the middle of the job.The thicker the wood, the more the damage to the item you are working on.A Rube Goldberg modification can be applied to stabilize the locking mechanism but it negates its use to cut wanted angles. If you are thinking of DeWalt I suggest you look for some other brand of Jig Saw. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of run time and light in weight, but a very poor chuck
I've regularly been using a venerable, brute-strong and die-hard 14.4 DeWalt drill (DW954) that has great battery life and excellent torque but also carries a lot of weight. And, after a while, you know you're hoisting an anchor, especially when driving screws overhead as with drywall. As a handyman, I'm often installing lightweight shelves, artwork, fixtures, racks, and other objects in wood, drywall and regular red brick so after a while, weight and size DO become important. So, I decided to try the 9.6v lightweight entry from DeWalt. I purchased it from a famous home center at a great price. It has great run time per charge, maintains a relatively steady speed even in harder substances, is beautifully compact and lightweight BUT has an absolutely awful chuck! Unless you're using the newer hex-shank bits, regular round shank drills will invariably spin right out of the chuck -- no matter how hard you try to tighten the chuck -- and stay stuck in the material you're drilling until you grab and twist the bit out with pliers. It happens so frequently that it quickly becomes an almost unbearable nuisance, especially when you're "on the clock" and trying to do the work quickly. I returned mine for a full refund and have already ordered a Bosch 32609 9.6v compact drill from Amazon.com. Unfortunately, I'll have yet one more battery charger to contend with but it's reviews were so good that I have to give it a serious try. If DeWalt could re-introduce their little 9.6v powerhouse with a better chuck -- say a single sleeve ratcheting type -- I dare say that it would be very hard if not impossible to beat for performance and value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful drill for the homeowner, but lacks power
I've owned this drill for 9 years and used it for countless projects. The drill itself is still going strong, but the batteries are losing steam and the charger stopped working a year or so ago.The drill works well for many jobs around the house, and it's lightweight and very well balanced. However, it has always struck me as being ever so slightly underpowered. For example, I've used it for several wiring projects, and it lacks the power to drive a 1/2" spade bit through a double 2x4 top plate.Aside from that, I've been very happy with the drill, and would recommend it to any homeowner looking for a well made, light-duty cordless drill.I will probably eventually replace mine with the 12 volt model, which supposedly puts out 50 extra inch-pounds of torque and only weighs 1/2 pound more.Stay tuned!

4-0 out of 5 stars Be gentle with the gear selector
I had the origingal DW926 and I'm going to replace it with the -2 model.I can't see any difference in the pictures, so I'm going to assume this weakness is still present.

The gear selector switch on top (1 for driving, 2 for drilling) is plastic & a bit thin where it grips the metal clip that actually moves one of the ring gears in the transmission.I had mine for 4 years for occasional household use and it finally broke either from jamming it while the motor was turning or dropping it.

Also, know that while the sun and planet gears are all metal, some of the ring gears are plastic.

This thing really does have tons of torque, but if you're building a deck with philips-head screws, you can't use it all.Even square-drive screws take some weight on them for the bit to stay in the head.I use GRK Torx-head stainless steel screws for outdoor projects now & I can drive 3 inchers with my DW962 by just letting the weight of the drill keep the bit in the head. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great long-term investment.
I write this review from the perspective of an aggressive hobbyist. My first power tool purchase was a DeWalt compact 12 volt drill/driver.My primary use for this tool was fixing small things in the nightclub at which I worked during my college years. As my skills gradually increased I began to take on more demanding tasks. It was clear to me that I needed some other tools and a little more power also.Frankly I didn't do much market research as I was satisfied with my DeWalt drill.Having said that, I will not compare this tool set with others on the market.

The price tag for the combo had me second guessing myself so I asked a contractor if I actually needed a $500 tool set.He advised me that I had to make my decision based on my projected frequency and intensity of usage.According to him, the cheaper tools often have weaker motor housings. In other words, the tool will break if it is pushed too hard and will, generally, have a much shorter life span. Not to mention diminished accuracy and power.

So if your usage is going to be: (1) Light and infrequent, consider an alternative to this combo.(2) Heavy and/or frequent, purchase a high-performance combo.

A word of caution, err on the side of purchasing the high-performance combo if you are not sure if your usage over time will increase.

After two years my combo still functions flawlessly.

Hammerdrill/drill/driver: This tool does what it states. It is nice having a light duty drill/driver as the 18-volt version can get heavy after a couple hours of work. For light duty work, a compact 12-volt drill/driver is ideal.Even in general, having two drill/drivers with you can save you a lot of time as you can place two different accessories in each drill.i.e. a drill bit in one and a screw tip in another. As a note, the hammerdrill feature works well, but within reason. This tool is not primarily designed for such use.
I have used this combination of drill/drivers to complete these two major tasks:
Extend a deck.Including anchoring posts into concrete footings and attaching ledgerboard into concrete.
Complete a rough framed room.As helpful info, there is a cheap depth setting drywall bit DeWalt makes that's a great time saver for setting screws in drywall.

Reciprocation Saw:There are a million uses for this saw, just pop in the appropriate blade and cut away. The only major drawback is that the saw vibrates a lot as it is relatively light weight. This makes clean plunge cuts difficult and while recip saws are made for rough cutting, it is a little more difficult to cut a straight line compared to some other recip's I have seen.Do not let me discourage you, I could list a hundred positives, but that would encompass more space than allowed.

As I truly enjoy the functionality of this saw, I purchased the 24-volt version. The 24-volt is a monster tool, but in retrospect my decision was not a good one.I already had a cordless recip; I did not need another one.I would have been better suited with a top of the line Milwaukee corded sawzall. This saw is a powerhouse, half the cost of my 24-volt DeWalt as it is corded, and an industry leader. If you ever need a more powerful recip saw, this would be my recommendation.

A final note. All of the tools in this package have been upgraded. The new 18-volt recip is a little heaver and has a 1 inch stroke (mine has ¾ inch). This may have corrected the flaw mentioned earlier.

Circular saw: This is a very functional saw.It cuts very well and comes with a rip cutting extension.I have only one complaint: The base is flimsy. It works, but a stronger base would have been a benefit.

After using this saw for 2 years, I decided it was time for me to move on to a more powerful saw.I was debating the DeWalt lightweight, high-strength base model with the DeWalt 364K which is the heavy duty version (and very heavy).I paid the extra $20 for the heavy duty model based on the reasoning that I already have a good light weight circular saw (my 18-volt).Also I may, in the future need powerful cutting power for lvl, concrete, brick, etc... Not to mention running my 18-volt through a lot of pressure treated wood is an abuse in my eyes. The 18-volt will take it, but that really is the place of a corded saw.I would recommend the DW364K if you need corded power to add to your tool set. However, I did not do any market research on corded circular saws so it may be worth your while to research some other brands for a corded circular saw (consider Skil and Bosche).

In the upgraded version of the 18-volt circular saw now available, the base plate is solid. This resolves my major drawback.

Also, buy a 24 tooth carbide blade, the 16 tooth blade included is a very rough cutting blade.

Flashlight:Works well, nice to be able to hang it on things.

For sustained work involving two or more of your tools you really need a third battery and a second charger.I would suggest purchasing another 18-volt tool you need as the cost of an extra battery and charger is significant.Do not buy the 18-volt jigsaw. It is my only DeWalt tool I am not satisfied with. The bevel lock comes loose while cutting every now and then; ruining the piece you are working on.If you need a jigsaw, purchase a Bosche; they apparently make the best jigsaws.

I sincerely hope this review helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Tools In The Worls
Theses four tools are the greatest, The drill is the best you can buy, strong enough to drill through anything. The reciprocating saw is wonderful for anything, even a quick prune of a low tree branch. The Circular Saw comes with the framing blade, cuts quick and the blade doesnt dull if you hit a nail or two, and the light is great for when you need an extra hand to hold a light, just adjust it and set on a flat surface and you have light to work by.I have had these tools for a few months now. I even try to find an excuse to use them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Made in Mexico
A word of warning before you spend your hard earned money on DeWalt tools.Black and Decker (they actually make DeWalt) recently moved the manufacturing of DeWalt tools from Easton, Maryland to Mexico. Most of the DeWalt tools being sold now were either manufactured in Easton after layoffs were announced or were made in the new Mexico facility. The facility has been riddled with problems from day one and may never produce the same quality tools as the Easton plant.Yes, every tool maker now manufactures outside the US, but DeWalt admittedly priced their tools higher because they could stamp "Made in America" on them. Now all they have is higher prices, a bright yellow case stamped "Made in Mexico".I am not telling anyone not to buy DeWalt, just sharing the truth. ...
