Lodge 4-Quart Camp Dutch Oven

Editorial Review

Dating back to Colonial times, the Dutch oven, distinguishable by its three stubby legs, has long been used by many--from hunters to the Boy Scouts--to cook breads, soups, bean dishes, and even hot desserts. Just place whatever tempting ingredients are on hand together in this Dutch oven, and it will cook directly on the bed of hot briquettes. Dutch oven cooking can be a trial-and-error experience--it used to take many failures before one could obtain even and thorough cooking without burning. With this in mind, the manufacturer has provided recommended cooking times and temperatures as well as some great basic recipes. The pan will darken with use, improving its performance as a nonstick cookware. --Teresa Simanton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for apple pie and cornbread!
I've had my 4-quart dutch oven for a couple of years now. It's just about the right size for cooking pies and breads. The oven is shallow enough to easily toast the top of the pie or bread when you're ready to finish things up. And after a couple of uses it was seasoned enough that I don't have a problem with food sticking to the sides or bottom of the pot.

Washing it is a snap too. A little warm water and a scrub brush and it only takes about a minute.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality American Made Oven -- "1 Star" needs education
I own two of these Lodge 10" Dutch ovens, as well as other sizes from 5" to 16".The gent that gives it one star should educate himself on the proper use of the oven.He should not judge a product that he knows nothing about. He should sell his DO to a party that appreciates the proper use and quality of the product. The Lodge Dutch ovens are great units if seasoned properly, and are extremely easy to clean with just hot water.

This oven is a great size for cooking side dishes, as well as cakes and cobblers. It is also perfect for RV travel. We cook 10" Sourdough Coffee Cakes to give to friends at Christmas. The smiles are worth it.I am sorry to see it being out of stock. I feel more people should get acquainted with the art of cooking as their ancestors did everyday. It is relaxing as well as historic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man giving this '1 Star' should learn what Cast Iron is for!
I've owned two of these pots for years, and just bought another. I also use 14-16 other Cast Iron pieces from small to large skillets, griddles, chicken fryers..etc. You can't find a better method of cooking than with Cast Iron whether cooking indoors or out! It's one of the best investments you'll make of both your money and your time to care for it. At least your kids will 'have a relic' from these, unlike most any other cookware! ... Read more

There are certain dishes that absolutely require cast-iron cookware, and others that just simply taste better when made with it. Just try throwing an aluminum pot onto the campfire and watching the blisters form or sampling a hearty spoonful of jambalaya that wasn't made in a cast-iron kettle. Fancy alloys and coatings on other types of cookware are simply trying to emulate the innate qualities of properly seasoned cast iron: heat retention, even heat distribution, and a scratchproof nonstick surface that will never warp. Since 1896, Lodge has been steadily producing the world's most extensive selection of professional cast-iron cookware, lovingly poured one piece at a time. Cared for properly, these products will last for generations. --Dominic Johnson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron: Heavy, Versatile and You'll Love It!
I like to cook in a variety of ways: stovetop, oven, grill and campfire. There is only one type of pan that answers the call under all of these conditions: cast iron.I have a set of high quality non-stick cookware that has served me well. BUT...you can't use metal utensils, place it in the oven and heaven forbid..put it on the grill. One of my colleagues gave me an old cast iron skillet a few years ago and it had that beautiful black patina characteristic of well-seasoned iron pans.I was hooked!I have greatly expanded my collection of cast iron pans, all from Lodge, and in spite of their weight, they consistently produce superior results. This pan is large and heavy but has no hot spots, thus heating uniformly. These pans require some special treatment: proper seasoning, NO SOAP and a thin wipe with shortening after each use, but you will have a pan that will be your culinary companion for life

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I've waited this long
After all the fancy All-Clad pots I own, this one is becoming my new favorite. For some things like searing meat, only cast iron does such a fine job. The only thing I'd point out to buyers is that this pan is bigger than it looks. If I'd bothered to measure first, I would have gone with the 10 inch skillet instead of this one, but that's my own fault! This one is big and VERY heavy, but after seasoning it, it's awesome for cooking. Try a fajita or a nice seared steak!

5-0 out of 5 stars Should get 10 stars
As Grandmother and any great cook knows, cast iron is the best for cooking and this is not only a well priced item the fact it will last for years and is easy to cook in and clean up makes it a must own for any well stocked kitchen. Le Creuset and Lodge are the two brands of cooking items I own.

Interesting facts about cast iron. No, it doesn't have to rust when washed IF you remember to read the simple instructions on how to "season" or prepare for use, and if you rinse out and wipe clean after each use and NEVER use steel wool or any abrasive cleaner that will destroy the "seasoning" that you have made.

For frying chicken you simply need to make sure the skillet is hot and as the rule says "Hot oil Hot skillet food won't stick". The skillet like all cast iron holds and distributes the heat evenly and you get trace iron in your diet which is healthy because cast iron emits trace iron into the food you cook.

Heck we even lug this on back pack trips because we KNOW that it can be use to cook up anything we are having for a meal. You can do pancakes to stew in in, and it is nice because you can use it to hit a bad guy over the head if he tries to hurt you. (joking). Although I do advise if you use one often that you switch hands on occasion since this will build up muscles due to its weight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good - 7000 exl
I have owned the 7000 EXL Purchased from Home Depot for about $1100 for over a year.Came with 12v cables, extenda-panel, and great wheels.I added an hour meter, lock, and cover.I start it regularly and have only used it for primary power last Thanksgiving for about 3 hours.I also have a Generac manual transfer switch to power my house.

I regularly start the unit and it runs well.I corresponded with Generac (and the engineers that produced this unit) before purchase. My OVH IC engine is produced by Generac in Wisconsin (Generac is now owned by B&S).The unit has electronic idle control, pressurized lubrication, spin on oil filter, and low oil shut off to kill the engine when oil gets low (not just prevent a restart).

I am careful with the unit and treat it with respect (keep it maintained properly). After the 2 year warranty is over I will probably buy the kit to run it on natural gas from propane-generators.com for about $200.

I am realistic about my needs. It can power my 2 refrigs, forced hot air heat, and various other circuits in my house (master bedroom, bathroo, living room and tv's.I chose it as a portable so I could use it anywhere.

Hope this is helpful.Contact generac for questions, they are great.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't complain about missing battery
It is not possible to ship a lead acid battery in a ready to use condition. The acid can spill and is very hazardous. Would you feel better if it had a battery but you had to take the battery to a service center to get the acid put in?
The only problem is that the information should be better. There should be a bold label stating the lack of a battery and why and also a list of various batteries that can be used. A garden tractor battery would most likely do fine and they are about 20 dollars and widely available .

1-0 out of 5 stars Icing Carb - Do Not Buy This Generator
CHARLOTTE, NC:Just experienced the worst ice storm of my life in Charlotte, NC.Five days later and still no power.I bought the last Generac generator from Home Depot the day after the ice storm hit, and I was requried to sign a no return policy. The generator ran for 3 hours and then quit at 11:00 pm., not to run again that night. When I tried to return it the next day, I was told by Home Depot that was not possible. They had 50 generators returned the next day for repair. They tried to blame it on 'owner error', but the truth is that Generac has poorly designed the generator for cold weather. In cold and damp conditions (winter basically), the air intake pulls in cold, moist air which freezes after 1 hour or so, eventually choking out the carbeurator. It thaws within an hour after stopping, and then it will run for another 45 minutes or so (maybe). The air intake needs to come off of the exhaust manifold like most good models that are more expensive. This engine is built by Briggs and Straton, and is sold under Generac and Porter Cable (perhaps others too).Do not waste your money like I have, and do not sign a no return policy from anywhere.Home Depot knows this problem exists and won't do the right thing by taking returns for defective merchandise. They told me that Generac advised them to tell their customers to cut a hole in the shipping box, and put the box over the generator while running. While this seemed like a fire hazzard to me, I was desperate for heat and tried it.I did and it did not work either.Shame on Home Depot and Generac - they have just lost a customer for life. ... I had a similar pry bar for 20 years and it worked excellently. For all I know it is still working fine for the *&%#@ that stole it. I ordered the Fulton unit and used it lightly. It has a very smooth finish to the top of the head that makes hardly any mark on the wood when pulling a nail. The nail pulling slots won't pull anything smaller than 16d nails. My son-in-law borrowed it and broke the weld between the handle and the head. He was tearing up a bathroom floor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rousing start to an epic fantasy series
Way back when I first became aware of the Wheel of Time series, I decided to pass until the series was concluded so I could read them all at once.Well, the series is up to 9 hefty volumes, with the promise of at least one more, so I can wait no longer. This series has become the gold standard of modern fantasy, in the tradition of the Lord of the Rings, which was first continued in the Sword of Shanara series. For comparison, this book far surpasses the first Shanara book.

Late one night a group of Trollocs attacks an outlying village that hasn't seen any kind of violence for decades. They are beaten off by two strangers visiting the town - an Aes Sedai, wielder of the One Source, and her Warder companion. The fact that the stranger is an Aes Sedai is almost as alarming as the fact that Trollocs have suddenly appeared in such a remote and quiet edge of the realm. Why are they there? What do they want?

Three teenage boys discover that they were specifically targeted - the Dark One, long imprisoned by Aes Sedai magic, is increasingly able to influence his traditional Trolloc allies. There is something about the 3 boys that the Dark One wants, and the Aes Sedai must protect them and take them to the order's fortified city, on the other side of the realm.

Thus starts the epic journey, wherein we meet many memorable characters, have many exciting adventures, and become immersed in the fantasy world that Jordan has created. He has obviously been influenced by Tolkien, but how could he not be?Tolkien's strength was that he brought together standard mythology and reworked it into his world, which Jordan does here as well. There are some alarming similarities - the Warder Lan is distressingly similar to Strider, the evil Halfmen and Drakhar are basically Nazghul, etc.Jordan even uses the Tolkien-esque cross-continent journey as a way to ease the readers into the mythology and geography of the planet.

However, if not in originality, Jordan surpasses Tolkien in many ways. His prose is faster-paced, the action is more exciting, the descriptions are concise without being turgid. It's basically a far more interesting book to read than The Fellowship of the Ring, at least the first time. That's not to say the world is less detailed - Jordan has created a fine mix of the down-to-earth (shepherds, blacksmiths, innkeepers) and high-powered (the Aes Sedai).Similarly, he makes better use of females, of magic (Gandalf's source of magic and abilities are never really clear in the LotR), etc.

If this book has a failing, it's that there are a few too many obstacles. Some of the battles merge together and/or seem somewhat arbitrary.50 pages shorter and this would have been a perfect opening to the series. As it is, it more than adequately whets the appetite and compells the reader to pick up the next book in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow... this start to the series is unbelievable...
Robert Jordan has started off an unbelievable series with The Eye of the World. The scope and depth of each scene and character is tremendous, making it extremely hard to put down. I soaked up every word in this book.

Rand al'Thor leads a normal life with his two friends Perrin and Mat. They create trouble in the small town of Two Rivers, just like every other teenager. Yet, there is something different about Rand and it is not until an attack on his family's small farm and the appearance of two strangers in the Two Rivers that he starts to realize that everything is not what it seems. Torn between the truth and what he knows and loves, Rand begins his journey.

Perrin Aybara, like Rand, is different from other teenagers of the Two Rivers. He is the son of a blacksmith, huge in size and quiet in demeanor, but it is his yellow eyes that stand out and make him wonder what they mean.

Mat Cauthon is almost normal compared to Rand and Perrin. He gets into the most trouble in the Two Rivers, but he is also extremely lucky. That luck helps him get out of some tough spots, but it also helps him get into some tough spots.

Egwene al'Vere loves Rand, but she is torn between her newly found abilities, which she wants to learn as much about as she can, and that love. Whichever one she chooses will decide her fate.

Throughout The Eye of the World the reader also gets to meet some imaginative and enjoyable characters, like Nynaeve, Moiraine, Lan, Thom, Elayne, and Elyas. The cities and world that these characters populate are written beautifully, but Robert Jordan does have a tendency to describe them a little too much (I think that is his only fault in this book, but not enough to decrease his rating). The action is intense, the storyline is wonderful, and the characters are fun to read about. I could not recommend this book more highly, but I do have to warn you that if you decide to start this series then be ready for the next 9 books about the same length (or more) and Book 11 Knife of Dreams, which comes out on October 11, 2005. Everyone enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars highly over rated
This book (along with the next 2 in the series) is a readable book. My problem with it is that the characters for the most part are completely unlikable and come across as very annoying. Nynave tops the list. She spends the entire book (and the following 2) blaming all of the worlds problems on Moraine and plotting a way to get revenge even through Moraine has only helped her. Then there is Matt who cries the whole time and cant seem to take and order from anyone. Perrin who manages to gain a cool power, pisses and moans that he is a freak because of his power instead of using it to help out. The other problem I have with the series is that all of the power (political, Magic) is held by the women of the story. This may sound sexist but I just can't picture being scared of "the women's circle" or being bossed around by a 20ish wisdom (Nynave). These two items manage to leave the story tainted, and 3 out of the 9+ were enough for me. ... Read more

A revelation to any cook with a drawer full of stained, blunt knives, this set satisfies every basic kitchen-cutlery need in a package compact enough to keep on the counter within easy reach. The set includes an 8-inch chef's knife, a 6-inch utility knife, a 5-inch serrated utility knife, an 8-inch bread knife, an 8-inch carving knife for slicing tasks, and a 3-inch paring knife for peeling and cleaning vegetables and fruits. A 9-inch sharpening steel keeps their edges in order. A pair of kitchen shears to snip herbs, flowers, or string is also included. Everything fits snugly in the rubber-footed, solid block. The block even has two extra slots, for future acquisitions or loyalty to old knives. Henckels' Pro S knives have heavy, three-rivet handles and are less weight-forward than those in the company's other lines. Their handles are also smaller, a feature those with small hands might appreciate. While this set is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised at some of the comments re. cosmetics
Honestly you would think many of the "reviewers" here were submitting their knives for a beauty pageant and not using them to cook with if you read some of the opinions voiced here. However I feel another poster was on the mark when they mentioned that many probably buy their high price German knives as more of a status symbol/showoff item than as a true tool or utility item, I wouldn't be surprised if many of those commenting on scratches on the handle order out five to six times a week and the knives at most get used to slice a lemon for their gin and tonic.

With that aside onto the product at hand, my wife and I were given a set of both Professional S (I believe six piece set) and large set of Henckels Ever-edge for our wedding, we owned a smaller set of Ever-edge but put a larger set on our registry because we wanted something nicer and more versatile. We took both the Six piece Pro S and the Nine piece Ever-edge back and exchanged it for the nice piece Professional S set (I happened to be working at a store which sold high end cutlery -Wusthof, Global, Henckels, etc... and happened to get a good discount on it). I also picked up six matching professional S steak knives to accompany the set.

As I said above I worked in a store for a short amount of time which also sold other high quality brands such as Wusthof and Global however I chose the Henckels as at the time the price was the best of the bunch, the knives felt much better in my hands than either the Global or the Wusthof, and I greatly preferred the straighter edge of the Henckels over the "belly" of the Wusthof. Really it comes down to personal preference though as what feels good to me might feel awful to you. Also Wusthof and others are only sold either on net discounters or higher end cooking stores which is great if you like to hunt around however Henckles and their Professional S line are sold in a good deal of retailers, which to me means that ordering replacements or buying additional pieces will be that much easier and I will have a good deal more room to work in terms of price negotiation. So if you are a knife snob and need to buy your knives at the high end knife/cooking shop only and or will get annoyed seeing your knives for sale in Bed Bath and Beyond then you might not want to consider the Pro S line.

Someone below mentioned "Forged" vs. "SCT" and from what I have learned/read on the subject the differences are so minor that the end user will never notice the difference. Basically it boils down to the blade either being forged from one piece of metal (older method) or on larger blades forming them from a composite, or forging two pieces or more of metal together to make one blade. Consumer reports and cooking.com refer to the Professional S style as "Forged" because it is very close in form and function to traditionally "Forged" pieces the only difference is that it isn't physically "forged" from one piece of metal. The other option is "Stamped" such as cheaper knives and Cutco.

Overall I am more than pleased with these knives and wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. My wife loves them and they perform very well. While the finish might not have been pristine out of the box (Yes I noticed some scratches as well on the handles) one has to remember they are only knives and they are meant to be abused, when selling other brands I noticed the quality was no better or worse (Wusthof and Global had their share of flaws in finishing as well) so your mileage may vary. As others said, check these out in the store before you buy and compare to others, if you like a nice straight blade with a sure feel and a slightly smaller handle (good for smaller hands) then the Henckels might be for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good blades, less than perfect handles
I purchased my Pro-S set roughly two years ago and have used them on an almost daily basis since.

The blades are of very good quality.Sharpness along the cutting edge was nearly even from base to tip when new. With weekly honing with the "sharpening" steel, the longer 8' blades have remained very sharp.Only the paring knife has lost its sharpness and needed a professional sharpening. The backs of the blades were properly deburred and dulled, allowing for tremendous pressure to be applied without injury to self (chopping turkey bones in half with the Chef knife). The serrated utility knives continue to cut loaves of bread as if they were butter.

My largest complaint has been with the handles. They are a sandwich of steel between dense black plastic. When run though a dishwasher (even without heated drying) or left overnight in soapy dish water, light rust sometimes occurs in the tiny gap between these two materials. It is very superficial and can be quickly cleaned, but it is annoying. The plastic is also starting to see light spidercracks on the paring knife.

Furthermore, the rivets have pitted and tarnished.I can no longer soak my knives before washing them, and the dishwasher is completely out of the question for fear of further damage.

Lastly, the wood block has not warped or discolored even after two years of moisture and direct evening sunlight. The top four slots on the right side all handle 8" blades. The topmost slot could even handle a 12" blade if required.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are great knives
I bought this knife and block set as a Christmas gift for my wife. She loves it.Our only disappointment was that the block was a different style than that shown on Amazon or, for that matter, on the box it arrived in.The picture showed a block with six slots for steak knives. The block we got is the one now shown in the Amazon add.Apparently Henckel made a change in their set about the same time I ordered it.We can live with the substitution though as the knive set is now selling for $50 more than what I paid for it in December 03.I would have bought the set regardless of the block design but the steak knive slots was a nice feature that appealed to me. The knives are well crafted, have a great feel, extremely sharp and we love them. There were two extra slots in the block that accomodated another Henckel knife we already owned and one other. We also love the selection of knives, especially the paring knife and small serrated knife. Some other reviewers have mentioned scratches or uneven sharpening but we've not noticed either of these conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "My way's not the only way,.................."
For primitive skill instruction, you would be hard pressed to find a better book.Everything they write about, they have done.
In John McPherson's own words, "There may be other ways to do it, maybe even some better, but these work!"Yes, Mr. McPherson, indeed, they do. There can be no better praise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Together with David Wescott`sbooks you don`t need more!
For those really interrested buy the "Primitive Technology, books " by David Wescott (these are bigger and have real good drawings)and the two " Naked into the Wilderness" books by the McPhersons (smaller and quit bad quality black and white pictures). In addition you only need to stop reading after a while, go out, and do your thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating.
This book is, in fact, ten booklets printed together making ten chapters. Each chapter deals in detail with a certain subject, for example the first is called 'Brain Tan Buckskin' while the second is 'Primitive Fire & Cordage' and so on.Each chapter shows skills and gives knowledge that will help with the next few.For example, knowing how to make cordage helps with making bows, setting traps and making baskets. This knowledge can be helpful or just thought provoking.
I really enjoyed this book because of my interest not only in Native American culture but also in the Neanderthals, early man and the Ice Age. Mr. McPherson not only talks about how to do something, but deals with the materials available, how the weapons and tools work and even gives you information on other methods of doing the same thing. But what he shows you in the book works because HE HAS DONE IT.
I don't suggest giving it to young kids - Mr. McPherson makes it so easy to start fires and set traps.Hehe!Over 400 pages with tons of details and LOTS of great photos. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Rosehips, rich in vitamin C, will remedy scurvy. Poplar, red cedar, elm, and willow are preferable for friction fires. If stuck on a flat, shelterless desert, dig a shallow pit (east-west) to lie in; even a few feet can result in a 100-degree temperature change. This is the sort of information outdoor enthusiasts will find in Bradford Angier's classic guide to survival in the wilderness. Divided into four parts (sustenance, warmth, orientation, safety), How To Stay Alive in the Woods is packed with woodcraft tips and age-old tricks--and it's packable as well, so don't leave home without it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I have never had to use any of the information contained in this book in a susrvival situation but as a kid I did use the information about trapping and snares to catch rabbits in Alaska as a kid (I'm using the third printing 1966 version.)I also built snow shelters to play in.Everything I tried from this book worked.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tips for Survival
You are stranded in the woods, alone and scared. Bradford Angier's "How to Stay Alive in the Woods: A Complete Guide to Food, Shelter and Self-Preservation Anywhere" very well may save your life. Throughout the book, Angier gives important information which is also quite interesting. He covers main topics which are the focal point if each chapter. Most ideas and tactics are generally understandable, although the illustrations are downright ridiculous at times. The moments that leave you thinking "that was a brilliant idea" are often interrupted with common sense tips that make you wonder what age group the book is intended for. Detailed explanations of practical knowledge draw attention from several parts of the book, which results in numerous low points. In conclusion, this book makes for a decent read, but lacks the qualities which would make it a book that you would like to own.

2-0 out of 5 stars I've read better survival books
I've read all his survival books, and they are all pretty much the same.Besides being redundant, he's a poor writer, so his writing is often difficult to understand.

Aside from that, the book has some merit. It contains many tidbits of valuable information, as the author does know his stuff.

However, I would highly recommend that one browse through the book before buying it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a Swinging!
I bought this for really cheap and I cant wait until spring when I can use it!I didnt think that I wanted a rope hammock, but the price was right and now that I have it I love it and cant wait to use it outside!

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it time
It is funny to read these review of people complaining of the hammock sagging.Of course being a cotton hammock, there is some stretch to work out of it.The first time I sat on it, I was on the ground rather quickly. However, unlike the other negative reviews, I simply retied the knots to make it tight again.Magically, the hammock stayed up, some people need to learn patience!I spent most of my summer taking a nap, and reading books on it. I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love mine!!!
It does stretch a little, but I weigh 190lbs, and set at the tightest links, it is heaven on earth. The stand was super simple to assemble (no screws!) and with a pillow, stress just melts away! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good radio
i've only had my homebase acouple of months and it the best one i've ever had and i've had a few over the years.

4-0 out of 5 stars increasing tech. data
It would seem, even to a non-tech, that someone has switched your Uniden mobile/base tech. data around. Secondly, terms such as "standard" mean less than trustworthy when applied to sensitivity and selectivity. Please don't feel I berate these 2 fine products. However as I am a com/tech. I would like the actual bench test measurements for an informed recom/purchases.Also I would like to know If Cobra 1000 or 2000 series are availible as they still have the best selectivity and sensitivity that I have had on my bench yet.Thank You ...
