Delta 36-844 "Limited Edition" 3 HP Left Tilt Unisaw with 50" Biesemeyer Fence

    Editorial Review

Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches.

The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch.

This model comes with a 50-inch commercial Biesemeyer fence system andaccompanying table board. While the basics of this popular fence design have beencopied by competing saw and fence manufacturers, there's still nothing quite like theoriginal. The Biesemeyer is made of the heaviest gauge steel we've seen on a T-squaretype fence, and the fence face itself is made of laminated 9-ply Finland birch, gluedsolidly in place--a construction method that eliminates warpage in the fence line that thebolts or screws used in competing systems can cause. The fence locks to the front guiderail using Biesemeyer's three-point locking system and automatically aligns the fenceparallel to the blade when the lever is tightened down, providing reliable accuracy everytime. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much the perfect table saw
Let me start off by saying that this is the last table saw you will ever own.It is powerful, smooth and solid as a rock (it weights just slight less than a sizeable boulder).Put a Forrest Woodworker II blade on it and you will get cuts so smooth you could probably sell your jointer.

Assembly is a bit of a chore, the direction could be better and the extension fence could be easier to mount to the saw.Plan on investing a good portion of an afternoon to get it together. However, once you do, hitting the on/off switch that first time will make you glad you made the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!
I am the envy of my woodworking friends! ;-)
This thing rocks. Solid and powerfull, this thing handles everything I've thrown at it. The accessories that came with it are great, as well. And the Biesemeyer fence is fantastic! Having the rolling base is a plus, as well. On the downside, it was tough to put it all together because it is HEAVY and there are many parts. Plus, the bags that held all of the screws fell apart so I spent some time just sorting the screws, washers, nuts, etc into piles. Things would have been much easier with an extra set of hands - especially when installing the cast iron extensions. But, once it's all in place, aligned and square it is fantastic!

4-0 out of 5 stars difficult set up but works well
If I could rate the saw in different categories I would give it 3 stars for the set up and 5 stars for its performance. Here are some of the problems I had.I couldn't easily tell which cast iron extension wing went on the left and which on the right. The wings aren't marked. After researching and analyzing the picture in the manuals in great detail I finally figured out that the left one has a countersunk screw hole in it.Also two of the pretapped holes in the guide tube were misaligned. This wasn't that big a deal because there are a bunch of other holes in the guide tube to use to attach to the front rail.In general there are a lot of holes in the rails and no explicit directions about where they should line up with the cast iron tables. This was easy to address but still mildly irritating.By holding the rails to the table and sliding it left or right I could figure out where to align it.One major objection I have is that the Z bracket system isn't used to attach the extension table to the cast iron wing in the Biesenmeyer model. It's used for the Unifence model. It would really simplify the stabilization and attachment of the extension table. It was a struggle to attach the extension table. In order to align the extension table flush to the cast iron table one person has to hold the extension table up while another one clamps it together. But the underside of the wings and table don't have a convenient surface to clamp together so it ended being misaligned a lot.I eventually just put a long clamp across the table, essentially squeezing the front and back rail against the extension table which held it in place. So the assembly was irritating but it's just a minor inconvenience.Another issue I had was the side extension table is substantially shorter than the one pictured on the box and in the manual. It barely was long enough to get the 50" distance from the saw blade.I was impressed that the Biesenmeyer face was absolutely parallel to the saw blade right out of the box. Also I was pleasantly suprised that the witness line on the fence was only 1/16" off.I think Delta does a good job in aligning things properly at the factory.Overall it was a frustrating set up but the blade/fence are parallel, the table top is flat and stable which is what really matters to me.I didn't go to the lengths that other reviews did in checking the flatness of the cast iron surface. All I did was put a straight edge on the table top and adjusted things to keep the surfaces flush. If your livelihood depended on it I guess such minute differences would matter but I'm a DIY/woodworking hobbiest. ... Editorial Review

Here’s a top-of-the-line jointer that’s equally comfortable in the professional’s shop or the home woodworking workshop. Its weight offers the stability the professionals and dedicated woodworker demand, and you can’t help but admire its bounty of high-end features. Our favorite feature is probably the extra-long infeed table, at a remarkable 42 inches. Like others in its class, it has three cutterheads, rather than two, but unlike others we’ve used, these knives adjust quickly and easily, thanks to Delta’s jackscrew arrangement. The 5-inch-high fence tilts smoothly and easily, and the rabbeting ledge makes a nice generous 5/8 max rabbet. You won’t be short on power with the 1-1/2 horse single phase motor that’s completely enclosed in the cabinet, where it stays clear of shavings and sawdust. We like the placement of the power controls, right where you need them should you have to shut down quickly. The bed is smooth as glass, and using it is an absolute pleasure.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delta DJ-20 Jointer
Fit, finish, design, overall very good.Parallelism between the infeed and outfeed within about 0.001" right from the factory.Slight lip on top edge the fence was removed with a little filing on the bevel (stay off the face!).After that, fence was flat withing 0.002".No discernable bow or twist.Plenty of power.Installation of knives is the usual hassle.Made easier with dial indicator and machinist's straight edge.Fence adjustments would be easier with some sort of screw controlled fine adjustment mechanism.A coat of wax on the bed makes the wood move easily.Dust collection is a VERY good idea.So is 220 VAC 1PH.Compared to griping I've heard about other brands, not much to gripe about here.Good value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jointer
I upgraded to the DJ20 X5 after having a JET 6" jointer that I really enjoyed for about 10 years. I thought I'd get 2 more inches of capacity, but soon realized that I got so much more. This is a real workhorse. 8" wide hard maple doesn't even slow it down and the finish is better than anything I've experienced. The long infeed table is absolutely critical to getting a long board flat because it allows you to get more of a long board up on the work surface instead of a cupped end hanging off the end and eventually lifting the entire board up as it reaches the infeed table. The extra weight of the machine is a plus because it makes vibration nonexistent and it allows you to canteliever 8 feet of 8/4 maple (heavy) off one end of the machine without it even coming close to tipping. Try this with a 6" machine and you'll know what I mean. The fence and it's mechanisms are all way more sturdy and heavy duty. The sliding mechanism locks tighly and the fence angle adjustment is simple and positive. I must admit that I liked the wheel adjustment of the infeed table, but after using Delta's levers and seeing how fast, easy, and accurate the parallelogram system works, I'd never go back to wheels. My only regret is that I didn't get this earlier. If you're looking for an 8-inch jointer, you won't be disappointed with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superior jointer
I waited a long time for Powermatic to redesign their 8" jointer like they did with the 6", but I was dispointed. The new Powermatic 8" jointer's lower price does not offset the fit, finish, and features of this Delta 8" DJ20.

The Delta lever actuated depth of cut adjustment is fast, smooth, and accurate. The fence is easy to adjust and holds square. I have run a lot of figured wood over it and have not experienced burning or tear out, unless I abuse it or don't pay attention to grain direction.

I previously owned a 6" Jet jointer. If you are on a budget look at the 8" Grizley long bed, the Jet 8" on sale, or the Powermatic 6" long bed.

Assembly of this jointer is relatively easy.I did it myself in about 6 hour using alot of leverage and some strong sawhorses.I would not recommend this to everyone. Unless your a 250 weightlifter get some help putting it onto the stand. The rest is easy. ... Read more

Delta 17-990X X5 16-1/2" Variable Speed Drill Press

    Editorial Review

Everything about this drill press says quality, whether you're a professional or a home do-it-yourselfer or woodworking hobbyist. To our delight, this model doesn't feature the belts and pulleys of the lesser machines; rather, there are two variable speed ranges—from 150 to 1100 rpm and 500 to 3200 rpm, suited to your material and bit size. The table is larger than those found on other brands with the same throat capacity, and bigger is always better where that's concerned. It rides extremely smoothly on a rack-and-pinion system that requires practically no effort. We like that the power switch is right on the front of the head, rather than on the side, for quick starts and stops. When we examined the 1/2-inch chuck, we found yet more quality in the Jacobs name. It runs like a dream with no play that we could discern, assuring a quality bore every time along its 6-inch stroke. It's hefty at 230 pounds, so there's no vibration whatsoever. Perfect for the cabinetmaker or exacting home woodworker.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Delta 28-299A "Limited Edition" 14" Band Saw with Mobile Base, Dust Connectors, and Rip Fence
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware

    Editorial Review

Whether replicating trim for an old Victorian house or resawing four-by stock to build furniture, Delta's made-in-the-USA 14-inch band saw is striking for its overall smart design. For starters, the saw's 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor delivers impressive power, smoothly and quietly, so it's perfect for curve cutting, but the saw isn't going to bog down when ripping hardwoods, either. The saw's nine-spoke wheels deliver more accurate tension on the blade, minimizing vibration. The heavy-duty cast-iron trunnions likewise minimize vibration to the blade. The lower blade guide on this saw rests only 3/4 inch below the table, which greatly reduces deflection in the blade and provides cleaner cuts. The large 14-by-14-inch table provides plenty of support for workpieces. The smart features don't stop there. The saw's adjustment knobs are large and easy to operate. The hinged pulley cabinet makes it easy to access the wheel for blade adjustments and changes. The closed base reduces noise and keeps dust off the motor. To cap it off, the saw comes with fantastic extras, including a rip fence, for resawing, and a mobile base--an absolutely indispensable accessory for a woodworker with a small shop. A 1/4-inch platinum pro blade and4-inch and 2-inch dust connectors are also included. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars
I ordered this saw from Amazon. It arrived in about a week.Everything was packed securely and there was no damage or dings or scratches on the bandsaw.Assembly was very simple and straight forward.Machine runs pretty well except for mild vibration even after adjustment/tune-up.I replaced the belt witha PowerTwist belt with mild improvement. The mobile base is excellent and very sturdy.Overall, I am happy with the saw, except for the following:

1.The dust collection assembly is a piece of plastic that is held in place with a small clip.Very cheaply made dust collection system and does not work well.

2.The rip fence which is made out of aluminum is not flatvertically and I can not get it to sit 90 degrees with the table.I am planning to contact Delta to get a new fence.

3.The bandsaw wheels were out of plane when arrived from the factory, but this can be adjusted.

I hope this review was helpful.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic machine--except...
The saw itself is nothing less than I expected from Delta. I received my 28-299A in 4 days; it went together well and runs flawlessly. My only complaint is with the unbelieveably cheap, plastic dust connector. It is thin and held in place with a spring clip which falls open in use because of the weight of the 4 inch adapter and collector hose. What on earth were the Delta design engineers thinking when they decided this was an acceptable feature for this saw? I have used the saw extensively and found guide blocks and thrust bearings very easy to adjust without tools. The blade tracks perfectly even after hours of continuous use. Come on Delta...improve the dust collection and make it equal in quality to the rest of the machine!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, the OOGLY..
The Good - made in USA, good fit/finish, quality materials.Overall, better materials than my Jet jointer.

The Bad - table was not flat (off by about 1/16th).I called Delta, the lady was clueless, thought I was talking about the width measurements...She did, however send me a new table.

The OOGLY - replacement table arrived, it is more warped than the original! Also in this category, the saw vibrates more than I would like. And the dust collector is useless; I replaced it with a flat, 6x6 adapter (4") by cutting two slots in the top of the adapter and adding a screw to hold the bottom.Works great with an 1100 cfm collection system.

Also, I installed the riser, but had some difficulty with the alignment pins - they are very soft, and don't fit that well.I finally had to file them down to get the riser installed.

Overall, not terribly impressed with this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
After using a portable planer for about 8 years, I decided to invest a bigger machine. This planer is identical to the DC-380 exept for a different paint job. And it is heavy!I am one of the lucky ones to have a hoist to help unload it. If you don't, have 2 or 3 helpers to unload and set it up.It took me almost two days to get it up and running.I first determined that it was too low for me, so I solved that problem by putting large wooden blocks between the bottom of the stand and the moble base. By the way, that moble base is an absolute must if you plan to move it at all. Then I discovered that the cord was too short, so I put a longer cord on with a twist lock plug. Most of my machines have twist lock plugs, anyway. When it is assembled you must be sure the infeed, cutter, and outfeed rollers are adjusted properly. There is a gage block that you must make, and the manual shows you how.The dust chute has an outlet of 5", so a trip to the local hardware store to get a 5" to 4" reducer and some duct tape, because is was not a good fit.It is essential to hook it up to a dust collecter, or you will be hip deep in chips very fast. After all was said and done, I am pleased with its peformance. The serrated infeed roller keeps the wood moving through at a steady pace, and it has two speeds, but I stick with the slow speed to get the best finish. The roller extensions eliminate snipe, once they are adjusted. If you get rough cut lumber, this is a worthwhile investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good planer, trouble with dust collection.
I purchased this planer 6 weeks ago.The "dust hood" that is sold by Toolcrib for this turned out to be ( not mentioned in the catalog) to be 5".I have tried working with both Toolcrib and Delta to find a way to connect this to my 4" dust collector but, after receiving 2 more dust hoods and 2 adapters that were purported to work, I still do not have a solution.I've not had a chance to plane much wood on it yet, but it looks well made (although in China).Anyone that has found a solution let me know. ... This powerful shaper has three horses under the hood running a poly V-belt, while on the surface are two rock-solid, flat and true cast-iron extension wings and our favorite feature, the micro-adjustable fence, arguably the best on the market. Accessing both spindle speeds is a quick, no-hassle task. The cutter guard is easy to work with, and the smoothly tapered start pin gives you a safe way to cut away from the fence with a combination of cutters and collars. An absolute powerhouse, it doesn't whine or snag no matter what you feed it. Making raised panels is like a day at the beach with this machine in your shop. Without a doubt, this is among the finest shapers we've seen.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step upfrom Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with theprofessional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head,a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There'salso a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piecefence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuckkey/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, andDelta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inchchisel and bit sets. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great machine, when it isn't broken!
My machine arrived by FedX, and seemed to be in fine shape.I got it running in less than 30 minutes including cleaning the nice coat of oil from "wood touching surfaces." I got twelve mortises done, when the handle snapped off at the spring pin.I noticed two fine cracks on the outside edge of the spring pin hole when I assembed it, but assumed they were made that way.Looking back now, it appears that the spring pin was driven into the hole, and split the retainer.Well, anyway, on the thirteenth mortise the casting snapped in two places.I got on the phone to Delta, and they assured me that they would send out the piece, as soon as it became available--backorder.It seems they have had a run on this part.
The machine does beautiful work, and it sure beats doing it by hand.A bit of clean-up with a chisel and the mortises will be as perfect as can be.My project will have to wait until the part comes in.At least I won't have to send the whole machine in for repair.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Broken in Shipping
I know some people think one should rate the machine and not the shipping, but, if over 30% of the people that order this tool receive a broken one do to shipping, I think it is safe to assume that in the total manufacturing process of this tool inclusive of Packaging, this tool is failing the final step. So, I give it a three. This is with the assumption that I would love the tool if it wasn't broke.

At least after reading many of the reviews, the first thing I did was examine the machine well prior to removing it from the box.I noticed the crack before I ever took it out.

If you order this machine, be prepared to receive a broken unit. The price and free freight may be enough to give it a shot.It was for me.Hope the next one is not broke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great small shop mortiser
I received this through Amazon without any of the shipping problems detailed in other reviews. This was setup and working in less than 30 minutes. The chisels I received with my mortiser seem of decent quality but no doubt I'll upgrade those in the future.Despite other users' reviews, I have not had any problems with the stock hold down.I've noticed that if I push it all the way down and then pull up on the very front lip of the hold down, it comes up to a perfect height so that it still rests on the stock but I'm still able to move it around under the hold down.I've only had the chisel grab the stock and not let go once and that was because I didn't use the hold down (oops).Great mortiser, cuts clean and easily.I do like the fact that the Delta mortiser is virtually all cast iron whereas similar products (Jet, Shop Fox) use the least amount of cast iron they can to get by. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars By the way
Actually most of this machine is manufactured in China. As a matter of fact, many of Delta's products (especially parts) are now being made in China. This is not a bad thing. I suggest you try not to let your prejudices cloud your judgemnt.

This is a fine sanding station however it is overpriced and you may want to consider a Jet as an equally fine product. BTW, Jet is made in Taiwan.

5-0 out of 5 stars cheap shot for an expensive outfit.
This machine is the very best of its type and still made in U.S.A. I have used them for over 40 years, and it is always a pleasure. The disapointment is in the way Delta gouges the dedicated Made in U.S.A.customer who has no problem paying for U.S.quality,when said customer goes to buy a dust-collector kit for the 12"disc,that is not included,to match the built in 6"belt dust collector and ends up paying over $... for a few pieces of 3" dia.galvonized tin. What a slam.It should be included, and prior customers be reimbursed. That"s just good business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong machine, but...
This is a fine machine, very solid.I have been surprised about how many uses I have found for it.With the appropriate belt or disk, it even workswell on light metal work.I have used it to quickly deburr and straightenmy wood lathe tool rests.Works like a charm, and much quicker thanhand-filing.My only gripe?WHY does it NOT include a dust collectionhookup for the disk? The belt sander has a very effective dust port. The disk just has an oval hole in the bottom going nowhere. At first Ijury-rigged a way to plumb that hole to the outside world, but then I gotmad about having to do so and called Delta. The tech fellow wassympathetic and gave me the part number for the dust collector kit(50-224).But why should I have to pay another $37 for what ought to be astandard item? Well, I paid the $$ and now have a complete machine.AndI'm very happy with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine
I bought this sander after reading the bad reviews because of the price difference to others, but this sander is great. It took very little time to set up and it sanded perfect the first time without any adjustments. This machine was so quiet and smooth I was shocked. Thanks Amazon for a great tool at a super price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
Not being a professional, but have been building a house and all the cabinets in it for over the past few years and have colleted and used many different tools over the years.
I read all the reviews before purchasing this drum sander. I read the ones that had the most complaints carefully. Even after that I still purchased one do to the fact that I needed one and feedback on other drum sanders had complaints as well. The sander was shipped very well and did not have any missing or damage parts. It took less then 30 minutes to put the sander together and about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to tone it up. The instructions are ok but I read then a few time to make sure I understood them. Like all other tools you purchase, the factory may say that it is preset at the factory. I have come to the conclusion that this is never so. I have always check and had to tone it up. I did find that the drum and bed was off and had to tone it. This also helped with the tracking of the conveyor belt. If the drum and bed is not parallel then the belt will not track. After tone the drum and bed I had to set the tracking on the conveyor belt a little. The sand paper is very easy to change from one grit to another. It is quieter then I thought it would be and with a proper dust collator (a must), very clean running. I would recommend this drum sander. I have had good luck with Delta and Porter Cable tools and would suggest them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most problems with machine are due to incorrect setup & use
I recently bought a 31-250 and initially experienced the same problemss that seemed to plague many who have written about their negative experiences ie, difficulties with table raising mechanism, belt tracking, stalling, sniping, etc. From previous good encounters with Delta tech support, I decided to give them a call.

The call lasted 5 minutes, and the rep covered all of the material necessary to effect a proper setup.

In setting up the feed table, the first consideration is that it has to be level. using a block of wood underneath the feed table at each of the four height adjusting screws, one must look for a "just makes it" fit between the top of the machine base and the bottom of the table support. Anything more than 1/64" will spell trouble.

Next, the cast iron feed table must be firmly attached to the support and the timing belt tension released so that the vertical alignment of the height adjusting screws can be accomplished. Each screw has a bushing that is secured to the tool base with two small carriage bolts. Looking at the feed side of the machine, the bushing for the right screw, and the bushings for the two rear screws must be simultaneously loosened, but not removed. Then you give the feed table a good shake to re-seat/re-align the bushings. Tighten each of the bushings, then re-tension the belt as per the manual. The table should be easy to raise/lower with just a single hand and moderate force. If binding persists, try aligning the bushings with the table elevated at a different height. It may take one or two tries to get it right.

The feed conveyor has a tendency to track the belt to the open end of the machine. With a new belt, or one that is misbehaving, the only way to set the belt is to tighten the tension on the open end side of the belt as per the instructions - enough to resist moving when pinched, but not so tight that you cannot stop it with enough pinching force. The motor side of the belt must be loose enough to prevent tracking to the outside - even if it is a little loose or floppy. Then run the feed conveyor for at least 5 minutes at high speed to ensure that the belt tracks correctly. For the first 2 hours of use on a new belt it is important to monitor the tracking as the belt breaks in.

The total time to set up the machine was about an hour and a half, including the phone call to Delta.

I did not experience any snipe problem at all. There is a kit that is available from Delta at no cost that corrects the pressure on the feed roller to help minimize snipe.

On a dedicated 20 amp circuit directly connected to the wall outlet, I was able to hog off almost 1/32" in one pass with an 80 grit belt on a piece of oak that was 12" wide, without the machine bogging down or stalling.

In short it is a solid machine. While the table may be a little fussy to set up initially, a few extra minutes spent getting it right gives you extremely precise results. The table mechanism can be adjusted to be perfectly smooth throughout its entire 4" range of travel. Don't even think about using this machine without a 1 hp or greater dust collector.

If only we'd had one of these when we built those doll cradles--and sanded all the little curves and crannies by hand! This beauty takes all the work out of jobs like that. No burn marks--ever--because of the oscillating action. Sure, you can chuck a little drum sander into your drill press, but you'll have to deal with that annoying gap between the drum and the table. This sander eliminates that. The large cast-iron table measures 18 inches in diameter and sits atop a 1/4-horsepower single-phase motor. A built-in dust collection fan draws down dust and chips through the table insert and into the dust-collection bag. There's room on board to store all the included accessory sanding drums and sleeves. It's light--just 45 pounds--and can be used as a portable sander or mounted to a stand or workbench through predrilled holes in the base. In addition to the standard 3/4-inch sanding drum and sleeve, the kit includes 1-, 1-1/2-, 2-, and 3-inch rubber spindles, drum plates, abrasive sleeves, and table inserts. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Spindle Sander
My shop is primarily all Delta products. So I wasn't surprised when I opened and setup my new spindle sander that it was excellent. Mine cam with the accessory kit and it did every job that I needed it to do. Setup was straight forward and simple. The cast Iron top makes it nice and stable and it doesn't move around on you. The top is also very large which makes larger projects a breeze. Overall another great product!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice fit & finish! Questionable long-term reliability.
I've been getting by without a spindle sander by using my drill press and some sanding drums. However, I finally decided I wanted the convenience and efficiency of a dedicated spindle sander. I went with the Delta Boss Spindle Sander (BSS) after looking at the Ryobi, Grizzly, and Jet spindle sanders. It seemed like the way to go in terms of price and performance for an occasional user like myself. I received my Delta BSS from Amazon a few days after ordering it. The very large cast iron table and the overall fit and finish was impressive. After spending about 10 minutes assembling the spindle assembly, I plugged it in and was very disappointed to find out the spindle wasn't oscillating. A quick look at the oscillating assembly at the bottom revealed the nylon gear that drives the oscillating assembly was stripped. Another Amazon reviewer had the same problem. I read his review prior to ordering mine; but, the sheer number of positive reviews convinced me to take a chance. FWIW, I'm sure the vast majority of Delta BSS's work fine right out of the box. However, a little confused why Delta chose to use a nylon gear in this critical area. In any case, I decided to return my Delta BSS rather than replace the nylon gear myself under warranty like the other reviewer elected to do. I may take a chance ordering another Delta BSS--haven't decided yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Do It Folks!!!!
After hearing a few horror stories on Delta tools I decided to take a chance and order the BOSS sander. Big mistake. It arrived fine and was packed fine but when I went to try it out I discovered that on the full upstroke the washer under the drum makes contact with and actually raises up the table insert. It is unusable. After waiting 15 minutes on hold on the Delta tech line I was informed that they were aware of the problem and weren't sure how to fix it yet but when they did I would have to drive an hour and a half to a service center and leave it with them and then of course have to drive back when it is ready. I usually purchase higher grade tools than Delta and now I remember why.

    Editorial Review

Eliminate sanding dust completely with this powerful downdraft table. A heavy-duty 1-horsepower induction motor draws dust-filled air down through evenly distributed dust-collection ports beneath the vented surface, keeping potentially hazardous particles out of the air and out of your lungs. The steel top's rubber grommets keep your workpiece in place, whether you're using a belt sander, a finish sander, a chop saw, or even a router. The table measures 31 inches on each side, but if your workpiece is larger than that, no problem--the dust curtains come down quickly and easily, and your space is unlimited. We're impressed with the amount of air it moves--a huge 920 cubic feet per minute. The dust is pulled down through the ports and is trapped in its reusable pleated filter, encased in a metal tray for durability and quick cleaning. Just vacuum it off and you're ready to work again. Built-in casters offer mobility and convenience. This package has a great bonus, too--a free 352VS 3-by-21-inch belt sander. Can't miss with this one. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Machine
I've had my 1 HP dust collector for about two years now.Overall I've been very happy with it.Assembly was straight forward without any missing hardware or other nasty surprises.Fit and finish of all parts is very good to excellent. The
assembly/use instructions are quite adequate. The zip lock
plastic bag for storing the manual/parts breakdown is a nice touch.Like the vast majority of my Delta tools it did NOT
require a phone call to their customer service to get it up and
running.Having said that you DO need to set aside a couple of
hours to assemble the pup..there are a LOT of bolt/washer/nut
connections to make.Should be a one person assembly operation-nothing is really too heavy for the average woodworker to handle
    alone.

It is a well made unit which will obviously serve the needs of the small shop user for many, many years.

In operation it does an outstanding job of sucking up airborne
sanding dust and debris.Out of habit I still wear a dust mask,

but I really think it isn't necessary. In a confined area it is a little noisy (not as bad as a cheap vacuum though) and you might want to consider ear protection especially if you're going to use it all day.

Nit picks: (1) the dust filter-glued-to-a-tray needs to be changed to something where a standard 1" industrial filter can be used.Even though the original filter will last for years with care, the purchase price for a replacement is just too high.

    (2) The curtain surrounding the top is a little awkward to use if you put the dust collector up against a side wall.

    (3) Why aren't all of the holes in the top fitted with grommets?
Gosh, these things cost maybe a dime a piece..surely that extra
expense wouldn't have broken the budget! You can take one of your grommets to a decent hardware store (forget the big box places.the 16 year old kid working there has no idea what a grommet is..) and get enough to fill the rest of the holes for
    little more than pocket change.

All nit picks are very minor and in no way detract from my overall satisfaction.I've been given to understand that Delta is moving production for this item offshore too-so if you want a Made in the USA one you'd better hurry up and buy it!

BTW: The fan powering this beast is very, very strong. All of air entering the top exits the bottom...don't be surprised if
you find out your floor is NOT as clean as you think it is as it
blows up dust from under the machine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be tempted by cheap dust collectors!
If there is one machine in your shop that needs to be well made and reliable it's your dust collector.Think about it, if you have 5 machines that require dust collection, your dust collector will run continuously while any of those machines are in operation. Therefore, your dust collector will run five times a much as any other machine in your shop.I had serious doubts about units costing half as much as this one being able to keep pace with this requirement.

I specifically was looking for a relatively compact size, maximum CFM capacity and as quiet as possible.I'm happy to report that all of these requirements were met by the Delta 2HP model. The impeller is metal and well balanced (this contributes greatly to the noise reduction over cheaper units), the metal sound baffle between the blower and the drum is superior to the flex hose found on cheaper models (which will eventually wear out from the abrasion of particles on it) and having three 4" connection points at the blower reduces the amount of ducting required.Yes this unit is made in Taiwan, but it is made to a very high standard and is well packaged to avoid shipping damage. In addition to the dust collector I also purchased the 1 micron upper bag, buy this if you plan on collecting sanding dust.I use what are called drum liners (intended to line 55 gallon drums and available at Home Depot) for the lower bag.Heavy plastic bags are better and can be re-used, but they are expensive, hard to find and do eventually rip.I also bought a remote control unit for the starter which has proven to be invaluable.I can start and stop the dust collector from anywhere in my shop even in the "I only have one cut" scenario.

I've complained in other postings on how difficult it is to get information on Delta products from Delta.Three requests on the DB rating of this machine made to their web site went unanswered.Just goes to show that even big companies wrestle with their intentions, direction and service on the web.Nonetheless, this is a high quality product and well worth the money.Highly recommended.

I have owned this collector for 2 years and have found it quite adequate to service my shop.I am reducting the shop due to rearanging the tools. I wish this had a larger single port to give me better airflow. I think it would be helpful if the bottom bag had a full length zipper to help empty the bag. Also, the bottom bag should have a velcro strip on the bag to hold it inplace whild trying to put the metal band on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 2 HP Single Stage Dust Collector
Want to run 3 machines at once? This machine will do it! This collector has (3) 4" collector inlets. I use metal ducting...I put a y in each of the inlets and have them connected to 6 machines. I consistently run theUnisaw, 8" jointer and 3 HP shaper at the same time with excellentresults. The Y's go to a band saw, sanding center and a scroll saw and Iuse blast gates to control the vacuum to each machine. Tried PVC...It was awaste of money...Stick with metal ducting and you will not regret it.I'vehad my set up for 2+ years and never had a lick of trouble! 4 out of 5stars...I would like to see Delta make Removing and Re-installing the clothbags easier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delta listened, Great product
Based on all the poor reviews on shipping damage, I was skeptical to buy. I based my purchase on the fact that all buyers liked it when they got it working. I am glad I did. The unit was well packed and received in excellent shape even with damage to the box. I have had it in my shop for a few weeks now, and there is a noticeable difference in the reduced dust level. I use it at low speed most of the time. It does tend to be noisy at high, but to be expected when moving that much air. Bottom line it is a great product and works well.

I just received my DELTA Air Cleaner from Amazon.I was, like many others, nervous about having the product arrive in damaged condition, however I was willing to take the chance based on the >$60.00 savings from buying it locally. To start, the shipping carton seemed to be in good condition.Everything was in place internally, however when I was instructed to remove both filters for removal of some shipping foam, I noticed some slight damage to the corner of the sheet metal which prevented the internal filter from being removed.A quick straightening out with a pair of pliers fixed the problem easily.Literally less than 10 seconds to bend the corner back straight.
The unit fired up perfectly, and looks and sounds great!I'm very pleased with everything, and would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for an excellent air cleaner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Buy
I just bought this unit.It arrived in perfect condition (other reviews I read complained of dents in shipment?), and is now hanging up in my garage. So far, I am quite pleased with the unit.It works as advertised, and the remote control is a big plus. The unit also allows you to program the unit to continue to run after you leave the shop (for up to 4 hours).Only thing I would change/add is velcro for the back of handheld remote (so you could stick it to the wall).I would give this unit 5 stars, but have only had for ~10 days, and am still evaluating it's performance, but so far, very good. ... Editorial Review

With easy portability and adjustment features built for speed, Delta's Sidekick 10-inch sliding compound miter saw makes a great cutting partner. Weighing in at only 56 pounds, the Sidekick is definitely designed for the job site, rather than the woodshop. Unlike other saws in its class, the Sidekick's entire base pivots--a distinctive feature that surely helped Delta build such a lightweight saw. The entire stand and saw also conveniently fold together for one-person carrying; it's pretty slick. The saw's dual horizontal rods are located underneath the base, too, which certainly protects the saw's slide and also seems to give the saw a lower, more stable center of balance. The ergonomic D-shaped handle is comfortable for either left- or right-handed use. The cam-action miter lock--always a good idea with miter saws--is definitely quicker and easier to use than the old traditional screw locks. This saw only bevels to the left, however, and setting the miter gauge requires more effort than we'd like. The scale is set from behind the fence, which means you have to lean over the saw a bit to set your angle. It isn't a hassle, exactly, but it might be more effort than finish carpenters--who have to dial in exact angles all day long--would like. However, anyone would appreciate the stock stops, which extend up to 59 inches down the stand. As is standard, Delta's Sidekick has positive stops set at 0, 22-1/2, 31.62, and 45 degrees. Spinning a 10-inch blade at 5,000 rpm, the Sidekick cuts widths to 11-1/2 inches at 90 degrees and 8 inches at 45 degrees. It's a good, solid saw, all in all, especially for contractors who want big cutting capacity and who are tired of lugging heavy compound miter saws and stands around. --Justin Paul ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This saw is garbage
There is nearly nothing about tis saw that i like. It has been constructed very cheaply with plastic parts falling off to major head flex. You will never get an accurate miter cut with this saw due to the excessive movement in the head. The positive stops barely work at all. Go with a Bosch or Makita.

I bought this saw 8 mos. ago and I use it every day.I am a finish carpenter and do cabinetry in high-end estates. After using DeWalts DW708 and Hitachi's 8.5 slide compounds for years, I bought this saw thinnking I was getting a deal (the big base, the stand). The only good thing I can say is that it still works when I plug it in. The bad:the worst thing is that this saw has so much "head-flex" that you can not achieve accurate miter cuts on larger crown moulding. The head will actually flex on a compound cut, and can "flex" sometimes up to 1/16 through the cut, especially in hardwoods, where more pressure is needed. It is so frustating trying to get large crown to fit laser tight with this saw.The miter guage is a sticker and is peeeling off making it soon non-existant to read any stops. The stops are achieved with the ball bearing settling into a detent on the lower plate, this is horrible when trying to find accuracy, I have a real hard time making perfect 90 deg. cuts the farther I pull the blade out... Why didn't DELTA make a positive detent stop on the popular degrees??The stand is falling apart, I am constantly finding peices in the back of my truck or on the floor of the shop ( I do not abuse my tools or throw them around) , Delta won't replace lost peices only broken ones.It only tilts right, and it wouldn't have been difficult to cast the rear aluminum peoce for a left tilt also.On the job sites, the saw attracts a lot of attention because you can't ever find one of these in a store, people like the big base and the stand....but the true test is how it cuts, and DELTA needs to tighten up the accuracy on this saw. I'm selling this saw, it was mistake to buy without testing it firsthand.

5-0 out of 5 stars can't go wrong
I just finished my first project since purchasing this saw. I'm impressed, It does everything I had hoped. A great tool that makes for a great finished product. If cosidering a 10" or 12" compound miter saw look at the sliding compound miters, they are worth the extra money. With features like the built in stand that doubles as a stand with movable stops for making multiple cuts of the same length up to 28" long.Plenty of pomer at 15 amps. If planning to do large crown molding look at the 12" sliding compound miters. Most cuts this saw will make for a lot less money than other sliding compound miters. The only draw back is a short fence when cutting moldings.I'm looking forward to using it for future prjects. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Old-Time Quality, a Top Performer
I have owned this jig for 15 years.During that period I have used it on a variety of size/weight stock and have never been disappointed. Its solid, massive design allows positive (i.e. safe) control of movement during the cut.Worth every penny if you do much of this type of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
There are plenty of other jigs available, and most people go for the low cost. Why not? They must work OK, right?

Well, they may work "OK", but this one is in a league all its own. Why? Mostly because of the weight of the thing. The machining is fine, the features, the size of wood it can handle, micro-adjustment and so forth are great. So is the large bearing surface and the oversized tightening handle (read: powerful clamping strength). But the one thing that makes this one the best is the weight. It stands up to whatever vibration, pinching, grabbing, and whatnot that might occur when shoving a piece of wood through a saw blade. There's no worry, ever, about kickback or losing control, and the smoothness of the cut is pretty nearly perfect thanks to the rock-solid support of the jig.

To illustrate: I regularly cut tenons and half-lap joints on the ends of up to 8 foot pieces of wood, sometimes at a 45 degree angle. That means the jig holds an 8 foot board sticking up at 45 degrees, and guides it safely and smoothly across the saw. Try THAT on your $119.99 nearly-as-good jig. Or don't- you'll damage yourself if you try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delta 34-172 Tenon Jig
This jig has been around for decades and has yet to be matched in terms of durability and stability. Sure there are cheaper jigs on the market, but none better. This jig still sells used for up to [$], whereas the lightweight jigs are a dime a dozen. Spend the extra [$] or so, and you won't regret it. It fits the delta Unisaw and other 10" saw with the 3/4 x 5/8" slot. It can be made to fit any saw by making another mitre slot bar or tapping the base to adapt to a wider blade to mitre slot distance. 5 Star machine. Delta has "cheapened most of their machines by cutting weight and using plastic. This is one of the few tools that is true to it's original form. Go for it. ... Read more
