    Editorial Review

For a burly saw with a big blade, DeWalt's 12-inch compound miter saw is surprisingly lightweight (40 pounds) and portable. This saw makes smooth cuts through the thickest of stock, crosscuts a two-by-eight with ease, and--with its extra-high adjustable fence--miters crown molding up to 6-5/8 inches nested vertically against the fence (a timesaving feature that's reason enough for some trim carpenters to buy one). The fence also slides away for bevel cuts.

What impressed us the most was the weight and balance of this saw: the blade lowers easily into the cut, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels smoothly. The saw's nine positive miter stops (detents) let you lock into the common angles quickly, but you can still dial in a 1/2 degree off the detent without the gauge dropping back into the stop. The detent plate is made of sturdy stainless steel, too, so it's hard to imagine it developing any slop even after years of use. The gauges are easily accessible and easy to read (what's more frustrating than having to lean around the saw to set on angle?). The saw miters up to 48 degrees on both sides and bevels left to 45.

Unlike some of their competitors, DeWalt mounted their saw with a burly blade guard that retracts smoothly and doesn't interfere with your line of sight. DeWalt's D-handle design favors right-handers, although the trigger's wide enough to use fairly easily with your left hand when cutting left-side miters. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which, frankly, is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 10 years of use without so much as a hiccup but now Dead
I bought this saw back in 1995 and have used it nearly every day since with no issues. All I can suggest is buy a quality regular kerf saw blade as I have found that a 12 inch thin kerf has too much flex and your accuracy will suffer (when doing fine work such as jewelry boxes etc.) It provides me with dead on accuracy.

    UPDATE:
I originally posted this 2/05.Three months later the tool is DOA.First the electric brake made weird noises then stopped working and shortly later the motor lost power to the point it where stalls if I do not lower the blade s l o w l y .

Can I complain?Well it was 10 years old did get used a lot.Not as much as it would have if I was a frame carpenter.but in 1995 this saw cost me $499 at a big box retailer (remember HQ?).This is my second tool I've totally killed, the first was a DeWalt 5" ROS so I'm begining to wonder about DeWalt. So I guess I'm not totally thrilled and would deduct a star from my initial rating if Amazon would let me.

    ****MAKE THIS 4 STARS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Someone doesn't know how to use their saw!!!
I work at a used tool store and have been contemplating buying the 12" compound miter saw.I read mostly the negative reviews on the saw; most complain about a problem with the table raising when you crank the knob.Well I conducted a little test with the six DW705's we have in stock. You'll be glad to hear that every single saw table did raise the harder you turned the knob.I was really disappointed since I could get a new saw for just $35.Then I thought, "How tight does that knob really have to be when cutting an angle other than a posi-stop.I hooked up a in/lb torque wrench to the knob and all be darned if it took less that 30 in/lbs of torque to very stoutly hold the miter in place!!!

I positioned a machinists square against the fence and found not even a smidgen of a gap. Then I attached a old fishermans scale to the knob and pulled all while starring at the sclaes reading waiting until the miter position overcame friction and slid into a posi lock position. It took 33lbs of pulling pressure to slide the miter off its original position.ALL WITH ONLY 30IN/LBS OF TORQUE!!!

So to all those people wandering if the table raising problem is as bad as some of these people say, it is; if you crank on that miter knob like a Gorilla!!!If only everyone had their own tool store this would of never been an issue.

Oh yeah, I just built a beutiful sleigh bed for my girlfriend in an arts and crafts style and made every cut I had to make with my new miter saw.It is an absolutely fabulous tool!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly engineered - accurate only for simple tasks
DO NOT BUY THIS SAW.The lock-down mechanism for the miter table is designed so it produces *upward pressure* on the leading edge of the table, which causes the table to move out of square with the miter fence!

This is a stupid, stupid design that even a 1st year mechanical engineering student would know to avoid.I should have sent this saw back, but since I got a good price on it, I ended up carefully grinding a new profile edge on the front of the miter table, so the locking mechanism presses *downward* against it.Scary, but it worked.I can now make accurate compound cuts, where before the cuts were totally off.

It was such a simple fix that I even put it in my CAD software and mailed the solution to DeWalt, no strings attached, for them to improve the design of the saw.I got a form letter back saying "thank you for your interest in our products, but at this time we do no wish to purchase your invention".Huh?I was GIVING them the solution, for free. These folks are clearly unmotivated and disinterested in their product line.

Needless to say, this is the last DeWalt product I'll ever purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best blade I have ever used
I bought this blade to go with my new Makita LS1221.On the first cut I was impressed. The cut was smooth and splinter-free.I have used it to trim out my house with hem fir and no splinters!I have cut hardwoods with equally good results. This is the finest blade I have ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars I give in a 10 out of 5; Buy the right tool for job
The quality of tool cannot be compromised.Especially when you have customers with impeccable tastes.
Invaluable, I bought my first WW-II 10" 40T 5 years ago.I do a considerable amount of woodworking and have gone as far as to start my own business. I try to sharpen the blade once a year; however I've been so busy I can't let it leave my shop. I'm ashamed to say it's been 18 months since my last sharpening. So I just bought a second one to eliminate the down time.
I cut through hundreds of board feet of hard maple, oak, walnut, cherry and alder on one sharpening. The blade is so amazing I don't even use a jointer.
I made the mistake of purchasing a competitor's 12" 80 tooth for my miter saw for $120.It cut great for the first couple weeks, but nothing like my Wood Worker II 40 tooth.I'm going to purchase the 12" 80 tooth and give my other one away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best miter saw blade from the best blade manufacturer
The Forrest Chopmaster does not disappoint in the least.I use my blade on my delta 26-255L 12" Twinlaser miter saw.

The blade cuts effortlessly through all sorts of wood both soft (pine, poplar) and hard (maple, oak, hickory, etc.).When I say effortlessly, I do not exaggerate, for the blade encounters almost no resistance as it slices through wood. This buttery smoothness is the first thing you will notice when you put this blade on your saw.

The second thing you will notice is the smooth cut this blade gives you.Due to the precise grinding of the carbide tips, after a pass, you will not be able to see any streaks, abrasions or "circle burn" that is common with lesser or dull blades.

Now, just as every other blade on the market, it claims to have zero tearout and splinter-free cuts. This is simply impossible for any blade, so don't be disappointed when there's a tiny bit of splintering at the base of the cut. Now, the Chopmaster reduces the tearout to almost zero, but without using a supporting sacrificial piece behind the stock you are cutting, no blade on the planet will have zero splinters.

Suffice to say, the Chopmaster is the most expensive blade there is for your miter saw, but as with most tools, you get precisely what you pay for.If you wish to take your woodworking to the next level, you need to get this blade.

Remember, when it comes to precision, the quality of the blade or bit you use with the tool is equal to, if not more important than the quality of the tool itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delta 40-540 16" Variable Speed Scroll Saw
Excellent value and performance. This tool includes almost 50 pounds of weight with a variable speed induction motor and a quick change blade mechanism. The saw is well dampened from vibration and natural harmonics at any speed are minimal. The speed range is excellent and the tool saws beautifully. Blade change is straight forward. What more would you want for the price?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great scroll saw
I now have 3 delta power tools, including this scroll saw.I am pleased with the quality and design.Setup is simple and goes quickly.Have a rag on hand to wipe off the rust-free oil though. This saw has everything I needed, including higher speeds to cut through hard woods.I only buy delta blades, they seem to last longer than others from the hardware store.I did buy a desk lamp to use with this scroll saw, you definately need one.Much better quality than the Craftsman stuff I looked at.I highly recommend this scroll saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scroll saw at an even greater price
I have been doing various types of woodworking for many years, both as a hobby and as a job.One day during a job an older gentleman who lived in the house next door approached me while I was hanging doors and said "hey you wanna see some real woodworking" and brought me into his house to show me beautiful pieces of marquetry and intarsia.I was dumb-founded and decided to go out and buy a scroll saw.I payed [money] for this one and let me tell you it was the most gratifying purchase of a tool I ever made.It does everything from fret-work to marquetry and the variable speed feature is fantastic. The arm is steady and stable...only 1 minor problem and that is that I over-layed a piece of 1/4" plywood on the top of the table to facilitate smoother turning of my pieces. ... Read more

Hitachi C10FC2 10" Compound Miter Saw
    by Hitachi
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $421.03
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Hitachi's 10-inch compound miter saw is an accurate saw with a solid table and fence system that produces good results. The powerful 15 amp motor with an electric brake matches the saw's sturdy construction. The fence easily adjusts to square with the included wrench. However, at only 2 inches high at its tallest point and only about an inch high for most of its length, it isn't the best saw for cutting crown molding or tall stock. There are miter detents at 31.6, 45, 22-1/2, and 15 degrees on both sides, with a maximum miter of 45 degrees to the left and a full 60 degrees to the right. We found that the table holds its position tightly between detents, but the lever to lift the peg out of the detent slots seems a bit weak and unwieldy. The miter gauge is riveted on, but the numbers and markings are not in relief, so it may need replacing in time as the paint wears off, although the riveted connection will make that replacement a tougher job than it should be. This saw has a vertical handle, like all the Hitachi miter saws, rather than the horizontal configuration many people prefer. In all, this solid, reliable miter saw is designed and built tough enough to remain accurate under demanding job site conditions. It's a great choice for people who want professional-level quality but don't need to pay for the extra horizontal capacity of a sliding compound miter saw. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good machine.
I have been happy with this machine. It seems well-built and accurate. It's easy enough to adjust the head for the work. It's been doing good work for me on a bunch of fine, compound miter work. The single hold-down seems to work well, but I wish I had a second so I didn't need to keep moving it L-to-R.

If you are doing any fine work, I'd suggest you replace the blade with something a little stiffer. The factory blade is very thin kerf.I think it'd be fine for framing, but not for the precise woodwork that I am doing with it.When I use the machine for rough carpentry, I'll swap the OEM blade back in.

There is a little wobble in the head.Since this is my first power miter saw, I'm not sure if this is a typical problem or not.But careful usage seems to not cause a problem, that is, push down, not sideways.

As appears with most machines, dust collection seems to be a problem, even with an attached shop-vac.

It checked out square out of the box.Though there is a fence adjustment that doesn't seem to be covered at all in the instruction manual. This is more a curiousity than a problem, as it seems straight-forward should you ever need to re-zero it.

If you are left-handed, I think you will find it a little awkward, as the trigger safety sets so it's under you thumb if you use your right hand. When I tried switch hitting for a cut on the right side of the table, I found it cumbersome.

I've listed all the negatives, but in general, it seems a solid machine and would buy it again.I've had other Hitachi equipment for 17 years and it's worked well, they just don't advertise much, but make good stuff. It came recommended by a friend that evaluates tools for a profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Time Miter Saw Owner
I have a friend who is a carpenter by trade. He took me through a tool store pointing out all the tools I should get for the shop I was setting up now that I have my first house. He suggested that I get a sliding miter saw but the price was a little steep. I decided to get a standard compound and since he spoke highly of Hitachi I was drawn to this saw due to it's relatively low price and quality build. Set up was minimal and I did a few practice cuts at different angles and then started working on the molding in my infant son's room. It's not easy to get a good joint but I can't blame the saw since our walls wave all over. My only real complaint is that when you tilt the blade off of vertical the motor cover interferes with the hold down clamp if you have it on the left side. I plan to get the optional wings since cutting the end of a 2x4 is a pain unless someone is holding the other end.

4-0 out of 5 stars good bang for the buck
The things that are important on this saw are great,degree/stops are right on , sturdy table, powerful and smooth motor. Ido have a few complaints; 1) No extension wings included...2)Thin,brittle red plastic throat plate shattered after a few uses (withfactory blade).3) they used an overly long and slender handle fortable adjustment- seems easy to bump and appears it would snap off ifyou bumped it hard.(Not what you would expect from a saw that isdesigned for transport to the job site). Overall I still think it's agreat saw , and for the price I'm willing to put up with a few minorshort comings. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
Originally bought a different jigsaw at a retail store for about $70, but it didn't work well at all.So, I bought this saw to build a poker table and it couldn't have made better cuts.I highly recommend this product and the 101AO 20 TPI blades to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
This is a great Jig Saw very powerful and easy to control. The only criticism I offer is regarding how you change blades. I find it very awkward to have to "pull up" and turn the knob at the top of the handle. It is difficult to tell how much is enough and on more than one occaision the knob has come off in my hand. The newer Bosch models have a better way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jigsaw - Terrible Case
All of the raves about this saw are true - it's the best I've ever used.BUT, what was Bosch thinking when they designed the plastic carry case? First, they used those cheap plastic snaps that make it impossible to open the case unless you have 3 hands; there is no place to store blades, the spare footplate and the splinter shields that come with this kit; you have to remove the sawblade to put the saw in the case; and lastly, trying to get the power cord back in the case and close it is like trying to get toothpaste back in the tube. In frustration, I threw out the case and bought my own. A larger case with metal latches and some storage space would be ideal or else a soft carry case that has some pockets ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If you're like us, you've crammed more tools into your workshop than can really fit. Luckily, an HTC universal mobile base (or two) can make a world of difference. The base is sturdy and easy to assemble, plus--unlike any other mobile base on the market--it adjusts to fit virtually any large woodworking machine, forming squares from 12 by 12 to 36 by 36 inches and rectangles as big as 20 by 52 inches. Holes at 1-inch increments let you choose any shape in between, and wheels at all four corners make it easy to maneuver. Roll one tool in; roll another tool out. Moving equipment around a crowded shop has never been this easy. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
I've got a very small shop and a Delta contractor's tablesaw with two cast iron wings weighing 250+ lbs.As soon as I assembled the saw (by myself) I realized I had a problem:mobility. After a search I picked the HTC2000 for its weight capacity and customer recommendations. It's super.Assembly was a snap, and with the help of the assembly instructions, I got the saw on the stand by myself very easily.I heartily recommend this equipment for the amateur or the pro.At $55, it's nearly a give-away.

I had purchase this for my JET Table Saw. It works great. It worked so well I purchased another one for my Bansaw. The flexibilty in moving your tools around is a great convienence. I would recommend this product to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Heavy Table Saws
I bought an HTC2000 mobile base to go under a 400 lb. table saw.It couldn't raise the table saw comfortably even though it is rated to handle that much weight.I ended up swapping with the big Shop Fox base that's rated at 600 lbs. from my band saw and put the HTC2000 on the band saw.It handles the 200 lbs. of the band saw just fine. The HTC2000 is a good mobile base, but I wouldn't put over 300 lbs. on it. ... Powermatic 1791228 Model 64 Left Tilt Table Saw with 50" Accu-Fence

    Editorial Review

Often it's the small touches that set professional table saws apart. Powermatic's 64 left-tilt saw has a precision-ground cast-iron table with a beveled front edge, rather than a 90-degree edge, to eliminate the risk of damaging material. The solid cast-iron extensions expand the saw's work surface, as well as minimize vibration. The blade tilts to the left, away from the fence--that prevents binding and reduces the risk of kickback (we highly recommend left-tilting saws). Powermatic has also developed its Accufence system with an extra-large cam that clamps the fence securely in place--fences with smaller cam locks don't hold nearly so well. The fence's particleboard sides are also easily and cheaply replaced (unlike an entire fence) if they get cut up during use. There's an integral dust shroud and a 4-inch port, so you can hook the saw up to a dust collector. The blade guard adjusts independently on each side and has a standard kickback paw on the end. The safety switch is removable; just pull it off to prevent unauthorized use (but keep an eye on it; it's small and could be easily misplaced).

Although the saw is quite heavy, it is still portable enough to be loaded in the back of a truck for transport to a job site. The saw's longer rails allow cutting 50 inches to the right and 12 inches to the left of the saw blade when used with the optional table and leg set. With well-thought-out features and rugged construction, this model is a solid choice for those needing a contractor-grade saw and a premium choice for the craftsperson or home hobbyist looking for durability and professional features. --Tim Block ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Saw and worth every penney
I bought this saw after reading all of the reviews and they are mostly correct.
The saw is the smoothest running contractor grade saw on the market and the construction is excellent.Out of the box the fence was slightly out of adjustment but I aligned it in two minutes using the procedure in the manual and it has held true. I've aligned other fences and this was the easiest and most accurate I have ever encountered. I especially like the solid feel and positive locking mechanism which sets the fence true every time.

I agree that the assembly is involved and the instructions lacking. The belt guard will rub if the motor isn't attach correctly, but this is easy to fix by sliding the mounting plate away from the belt. The best advice I can give is take your time on the assembly and think about how all the pieces will fit together because once you are finished you will love this saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, company and price

The Bottom Line with only a few minor issues, the saw stands out as a great saw. The price and service solidify my choice of this saw.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powermatic 64. Great Saw.
I just bought the saw after weeks of comparison shopping and found that the Powermatic had everything that I was looking for. I was looking at the Jet, Delta and DeWalt brands, and feel that the Powermatic was the best buy for the money, and the quality is number one.

Pros:The table's table finish is fantastic. Very smooth and true. The saw feels very study and strong. High quality. The motor is quiet and it has a clutch that stops the blade nicely when you shut the saw off.The accu-fence is accurate and a breeze to work with. Very high quality.

Cons: There are two bolts that hold the the belt cover on, but I could only put one on because the second one rubs the belt. If the belt was shorter, the guard would fit better. The table is beveled, but the extension wings are not. The motor was a little tricky to align on the back of the saw. The directions could have been a little easier to understand. I do not like the way that the blade gaurd mounts on the saw. There is two bolts that hold the gaurd in the rear, and one that is located right behing the blade that makes removal of the guard difficult.

The saw took me about 4 hours to assemble, and about another hour to make some final adjustments. Make sure that you get a mobile base for this saw, if you plan on moving it around. I am very happy with the saw, and glad that I went with the Powermatic brand. It is a well built table saw, and high quality. I would have this a 5 star rating if it was not for those minor issues. I puchased this saw from Amazon...Very fast delivery. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The heart of any table saw is the fence, and DeWalt's smooth-sliding, unique double-cam action fence locks down tight and always travels parallel to the blade. The fence face shifts forward, too, giving you the option--if a cut requires it--of extra fence area in front of the blade. The fence can also drop flush to the table for ripping laminates.

In fact, this saw is riddled with great, user-friendly features. There's an oversize, left-side on/off switch that lets you bump the saw off with your knee if you run into trouble while making a cut. It's exactly this sort of attention to detail that wins a lot of people over to DeWalt products. The blade-elevation crank is also set lower on this saw than most, so there's plenty of hand clearance for making blade height adjustments. Again, this might seem like a minor touch until you think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy, metal bevel scale is a nice touch, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws. The saw's inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor is quiet, cuts down on vibration, and makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard motor saws, a feature you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw's got plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT A UNISAW....
But I don't think it was suppose to be. It's billed as a "hybrid" and I think as such it does a pretty good job. I've had mine for a couple of years now and yep...had to do some improvements to it. First the miter gauge...its junk..toss it and get an Osborne EB-3, build a good panel sled and you've got that problem solved. Toss the throat plate and get a Tru-Cut, its easier to get level and the replacable inserts are the cats meow. The blade guard, splitter and dogs are adequate, haven't seen anything on the market that would work better, so I have just learned to live with it. The dust collection part was actually the easiest to fix, I removed the lower blade "cover" that the 2" dust hose was connected to, enclosed the back of the saw with a scrap piece of veneer, then enclosed the bottom of the saw with a piece of 1/4 in ply with a 4" connector epoxied to it. Once or twice a year I open the plastic side and with the chip collector running I blow out the saw to get the little that doesn't go on its own, this is when I also do the little bit of maintenance that is nec... lube, oil, etc.
The fence....yeah well the fence...I've actually had very good luck with my fence. Its pretty solid and the face doesn't have the cup or deflection that several reviewers have reported. Once I got it "zeroed" its stayed pretty much where it belongs. But adding accesories to it is a pain. Feather boards, stop blocks, etc., have to be custom built and arn't exactly works of art. This is where a Biesmeyer really shines, as it is simple to add attachments to the Biesmeyer. I do 90% of my cutting with the miter gauge or a sled, so I don't really feel the need to upgrade the fence.
99% of the cutting I do is Hardwoods. Especially exotics, vera, quebracho, mesquite, and a lot of burl maple. I've never had the saw bog down or had the breaker kick out. I only use Frued thin kerf blades and keep em sharp. I also use Dri Cote on my blades and cutters and feel this really makes a differance.
My woodworking buddy has the Jet Supersaw (see review). Its a good saw, but he's had to make "improvements" also. We both still enjoy using our saws and of course we both think we got the best one.
If you buy the Dewalt or the Jet, expecting a UniSaw, you will be disappointed. But I do think its better than a contractors saw, I had a Sears and a Delta contractors saw and I like this one a lot better. More stable, more surface area on the table (I did add the cast iron wings to both sides)and the noise level is less than either of my contractors saws.
I added the Dewalt mobile base (separate review)...in a small shop its a must...the after markets don't make it, go with the Dewalt base.
I would recommend the Dewalt 746 or the Jet Supersaw to anyone looking for a "cabinet" saw with a smaller profile and a smaller price than the Unisaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars I studied a long time before buying this saw...
My woodworking hobby outgrew my starter saw a few years ago, but circumstances did not allow me to buy a new saw until this year. Since I really wanted to take my time with this decision, I studied the market, put my hands on every saw I could, and read everything I could find on the web about table saw features. Since I work in a library, I also had access to every table saw review in most of the woodworking magazines.

Eventually I came up with the following criteria:

    - I have a one car garage for a workshop, so space was a big issue. I was only looking at saws with 30" capacity to the right of the blade. I also limited my search to saws that could be pushed flat against a wall if need be. This left only hybrids and cabinet saws to consider.

    - I wanted the most powerful motor I could get without having to switch to 240 volts, yet have the option to rewire the saw for 240v later if I so choose (thus eliminating 3hp saws).

    - I wanted a solid fence that was accurate and DID NOT DEFLECT when locked down.

    - I wanted some decent dust collection abilities.

    - I wanted a quieter saw with less vibration than my old Delta contractor's saw.

    - I wanted to spend less than $1000 to get the saw, yet have lots of options for upgrading/outfitting later.

Eventually I chose the DeWalt 746, and here are my observations:

The saw package arrived in relatively undamaged crating (seven days after I ordered it from Amazon), and the saw was in perfect condition. Here's a tip - I ordered this saw over the phone and was given the option to pay $25 to have the saw delivered on the ground in my shop - well worth it! Assembly was not too bad (3 hrs), but the manual could have been a bit better. In my mind it was a bit too small and the illustrations corresponding to each step of assembly were not always on the same page! This saw is heavy and the cabinet/stand is very stiff and strong. I feel that the base of this saw is a much better design than the open stand of my old Delta. The saw also runs very smoothly - it is A LOT quieter than my last saw and vibration is at a minimum. The motor is about as powerful as you can get while running 120v without popping breakers left and right (which I have read is a common problem with the 2hp motors running 120v). I have not had any problems ripping 8/4 white oak with a good sharp blade... Speaking of blades, the one that came with this saw is inferior. I will keep it just for those instances where I want to cut treated lumber for outside projects or some other such task not requiring precision or smooth cuts. I have always wanted a Biesenmeyer fence, but I read good things about the fence on this saw and was eager to try it for myself. I am pleased to say that it is a very sturdy (and heavy) fence with some ingenious features. Most importantly this fence operates very smoothly, it does not deflect when locked down, it was easy to adjust square to the miter slot and blade, and zeroing the fence scale could not have been easier. I did have to fuss with it a bit to get the fence face set 90 degree to the table, but once I got it there it seems to hold the setting well. Dust collection on this saw is absolutely excellent. I hooked up my Fein Turbo II vacuum and basically no significant sawdust escapes. I couldn't be happier in that department. As for safety features, I like splitters and hate blade guards so I was pleased to find that the splitter/blade guard on this saw is able to be separated (I did just that). The splitter is easily adjustable and works well.

As far as downsides go... Well, as I mentioned earlier the assembly manual could have been way better and the blade that came with the saw is junk. Also (and I read this several places ahead of time) the table is not absolutely flat. Using a straightedge I found a couple of hollows in the surface. I don't think they are significant enough to throw off the accuracy of what I am doing with this saw, but be forwarned that if you use a tablesaw to cut something more intricate than tenons you may have a problem with this. Unlike other reviewers I didn't have too much of a problem with the steel extension wings that came with this saw. When installed properly are they perfectly level to the main table? Yes. Are they perfectly flat? No, but acceptible for what they are. I wanted a good saw that could be upgraded and these are good enough for temporary use. In fact there are a host of great accessories/upgrades available for this saw. I already ordered a cast iron router table wing (made by Bench Dog) and soon I plan to order the DeWalt cast iron wing for the other side of the saw.

When it comes down to it, I am very pleased with this saw. The features all met or exceeded my personal needs. This is important, because I have no doubt I could have gotten a saw that performed nearly as well for a lot less money, but it would have failed to meet one or more of MY criteria. As for the price - I bought mine at a time when the saw was on sale and the mobile base was included (see my separate review of the mobile base). The sale price coupled with Amazon's ongoing deal of 25 dollars off any order over 199 gave me this saw at more than a seventy dollar discount. If your needs are similar to mine, then take a close look at this saw. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars good saw for the money
I have had this saw for about 18 months now, and am pretty
    satisfied with it.

Plusses: everything worked out of the box; solid saw, a lot
better than a portable; blade aligned with miter slots; has
    worked solidly for 18 months.

Minuses: the fence was not perpendicular to the table (vertical)
and needed shimming; I think the fence is pretty accurate, but
it doesn't lend itself to sacrificial add-ons or using the
back (right) side of the fence; the 2 1/4 inch dust collection
    port is "fair" at best; the included miter gauge is useless;
the stamped metal wings are cheesy; the motor is not strong
enough to push a blade that isn't pretty sharp through thicker
woods; the splitter is ok but is a *pain* to install and take off.

All in all, this sits right in the middle between a portable
and a good Unisaw.I think you get your money's worth, but
this is not a *great* product, i.e. where you get more than
what you paid for. ... Read more

When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top dollar saw at a reasonable price
I purchased the dewalt 788 about two years ago.At the time I was seriously considering the excaliber. However when I saw the dw788 and was able to test one at my local woodcraft supply store I decided to save some money and go with the dewalt.Historicly when ever I have "gone cheap" I have often regreted it.Not so with the dw788.It has many of the same features as the excaliber and runs just as smooth. It passes the coin test quite well. The only problem is the knobs to tighten the blade holders are a bit small.I plan to replace them.Blade changing is fairly easy, some blades more so than others. However this is mostly just getting used to knowing where to place the blades in the holders.I just wish someone would offer a scroll saw blade that is just an eight or a quarter inch longer than the standard. It would make blade changing soooo much easier.I would gladly pay more for such blades.Anyway if money is not an object, then by all means get the excaliber or that other big blue saw that has no blade wobble at all, costs about $1400.But if you have to watch your money like I do then get the Dw788 its a great saw and looks really cool in my shop. The lamp is a great addition as well.I bought the set, lamp, saw, and stand. It all works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars super scroll saw
Hi folks; Just a line to let you know how good the DeWalt scroll saw is. I have four scroll saws, craftsman, dremel, delta, and Dewalt. I also have used most high cost top brands and I can say the DeWalt is the best that I have ever used. Almost no vibration, easy blade changes, large table, quiet and I would recomend this saw over all others. I have been woodworking for many years and it is rare these days to see a tool of this quality. Craftsman would be a good low entry saw if you don't want to spend more for a more user friendly saw. Hope this review helps someone out there. good luck,,,,Owen Smith

4-0 out of 5 stars good or great?
This is one fine saw its like driving a BMWcompared to a VW bug on bad roads. The only 2 problems I have had are the lower blade chuck and the on off switch. If you buy one and live aways from the repair shop be sure to get an extra on off switch it takes just a few minutes to put one in.Its a good idea to get an extre blade chuck both are the same part number. Keep the table clean and waxed and be sure to clean up the ends if the blades with sand paper also buff the table top with 300+ grite sandpaper befor waxing. The work piece hold down does make a fine hat holder, better than throwing it away.Have fun and enjoy spending the money you have saved.

Rotozip ZMREBELAZ Rebel Spiral Saw and Zip Mate Combo Kit
    Tools & Hardware (21 February, 2003)
    list price: $159.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

If you ever watch television, chances are you've seen at least one infomercial for the Rotozip spiral saw. Although Rotozip began as the original power drywall cutter, the tool line has grown and expanded, and today's Rotozip claims to be "the most versatile tool you can own." Here at Amazon.com, sales of this Rotozip combo kit have been hotter than a George Foreman grill at a family reunion, so naturally we were anxious to take the Rotozip for a test spin.

The kit features the Rebel spiral saw, a Zip Mate grinder attachment, a carrying case, and a host of bits and accessories. The two-speed Rebel saw cranks an impressive 24,000 and 30,000 rpm. In our tests, the 4-1/2 amp motor powered the various cutting bits through just about every type of material we had lying around the shop: sheetrock, plywood, fiberglass, tile, brick, and cinder block. Our Rebel sliced through them all faster than a Ginsu knife through a hot tin can. Although it's certainly not going to replace our circular saw for cutting two-by material, it's great for anything less than an inch thick.

Just as the infomercials state, the Rotozip is an ideal all-around tool for wood and Plexiglas crafts and simple home improvement projects. We especially like that the Rebel includes a safety-conscious bump on/off switch that allows the tool to be shut down with just a tap. We also applaud Rotozip for creating a tool that's comfortable and easy to use for both men and women, big hands and small. All of the Rotozip saws have comfortable, ergonomic grips and are powered and balanced so the user never feels as though the tool is likely to torque out of his or her hands. The combo kit includes the Zip Mate, a useful little 4-inch grinder that attaches to the spiral saw motor and cuts metal and masonry, as well as acting as a grinding and polishing wheel (albeit a small one). Bottom line? The Rebel is a great do-it-yourself tool that's easy to use. This combo kit comes with everything you need for crafts and weekend projects. --Mark McDonald ... Read more
