Rotozip ZMREBELAZ Rebel Spiral Saw and Zip Mate Combo Kit
Tools & Hardware (21 February, 2003)
list price: $159.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

If you ever watch television, chances are you've seen at least one infomercial for the Rotozip spiral saw. Although Rotozip began as the original power drywall cutter, the tool line has grown and expanded, and today's Rotozip claims to be "the most versatile tool you can own." Here at Amazon.com, sales of this Rotozip combo kit have been hotter than a George Foreman grill at a family reunion, so naturally we were anxious to take the Rotozip for a test spin.

The kit features the Rebel spiral saw, a Zip Mate grinder attachment, a carrying case, and a host of bits and accessories. The two-speed Rebel saw cranks an impressive 24,000 and 30,000 rpm. In our tests, the 4-1/2 amp motor powered the various cutting bits through just about every type of material we had lying around the shop: sheetrock, plywood, fiberglass, tile, brick, and cinder block. Our Rebel sliced through them all faster than a Ginsu knife through a hot tin can. Although it's certainly not going to replace our circular saw for cutting two-by material, it's great for anything less than an inch thick.

Just as the infomercials state, the Rotozip is an ideal all-around tool for wood and Plexiglas crafts and simple home improvement projects. We especially like that the Rebel includes a safety-conscious bump on/off switch that allows the tool to be shut down with just a tap. We also applaud Rotozip for creating a tool that's comfortable and easy to use for both men and women, big hands and small. All of the Rotozip saws have comfortable, ergonomic grips and are powered and balanced so the user never feels as though the tool is likely to torque out of his or her hands. The combo kit includes the Zip Mate, a useful little 4-inch grinder that attaches to the spiral saw motor and cuts metal and masonry, as well as acting as a grinding and polishing wheel (albeit a small one). Bottom line? The Rebel is a great do-it-yourself tool that's easy to use. This combo kit comes with everything you need for crafts and weekend projects. --Mark McDonald ... Read more

George Foreman GR30CB XXL Grill

Editorial Review

Everybody loves favorite foods from the grill--hamburgers, steaks, chicken, and veggie kabobs. But sometimes there's just not room for an outdoor barbecue, or it's raining, making it hard to get that great grilled steak. This small countertop George Foreman grill works in any kitchen, and as a bonus, it's wonderful at reducing fat intake. The grill works like a waffle iron, with ridged cooking surfaces that close over the food to be cooked, and fat drains off into the removable plastic drip tray below, with no added fat used for cooking. The outside of the grill is made of white enamel with a wipe-clean surface, and the inside cooking surfaces are nonstick metal that requires hand washing and should only be used with cooking utensils made of wood or plastic. --Marcie Bovetz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars George Foreman Grill as it should be...XXL
There are too many great things to say about this little device: It's affordable to anybody, even if you are a student stuck living at school. It's compact, you can store it anywhere--a closet, your car, your office, the kitchen cabinet. It's powerful--I have plugged it in and in just minutes began working on an entire three course meal for six people with only this unit to work with. It's easy to clean--this is one of the few products out there that is every bit as easy to clean as the commercials show it to be on TV. It's is economical, using very little electricity to do a just that would waste electricity in a conventional oven or even an older model microwave oven. It's versatile--I have cooked everything from thin pieces of tempeh strips to thick steaks and it cooks both to perfection. You never would have been able to convince me to buy anything on TV before (and most certainly not from a former boxing champion...) but since a friend both this grill for me I have thanked them time and again (and in turn bought the same gift for many a friend of my own).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Grill For Indoor Or Outdoor Use!
Even grizzled old mountain men like me get tired of a steady diet of squirrel stew. So, on those increasingly frequent occasions that I can rustle up some lean hamburger that my significant friend buys at the supermarket on her way home from work, I whip out the new deluxe version of this handy and quite simple device and presto! In a second or so have four big burgers to stave off that ravenous hunger we mountain men are famous for. I even share the burgers with the lady in question, although I suspect she likes the fact that even I can't screw them up, and that I can also quickly clean up the grill and put it away, all by myself! Just like an adult! And like one of the other reviewers below, she has found a lot of innovative ways to rustle up a variety of dishes using this, and we have worked this new deluxe grille for a couple of weeks, and to my mind have already more than made up for the sixty or so bucks we paid for it. It is easy to use, quick to clean up, and healthy because of all the grease it whisks away from the food itself. Now I even keep some of those pre-packed hamburger patties in the freezer for emergencies, and as long as I get a warning call a few hours before I need them, the patties are thawed and ready to throw into this infernal machine. Gee, ain't technology great! It is a great product and I highly recommend it, even for history buffs like me!

George Foreman GR80 Big George Rotisserie
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $199.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Large enough to roast a 16-pound turkey totally, this super-size George Foreman Rotisserie just might give your outdoor barbecue grill a run for the money. Developed to roast food with a minimum of fat, this machine turns out to be quite versatile. You can barbecue fowl or meat on the heavy-duty rotisserie bar; grill fish, burgers, or vegetables in the nonstick adjustable flat basket; or roast greaseless potatoes in the round nonstick baking basket. If that isn't enough, you can also grill kabobs on the wire rack, or turn it into an extra oven to bake casseroles and desserts. Items come out perfectly done and fat-free--rotisserie items self-baste in their own juices as they turn, and all the fat drips down into the removable drip pan below.

The controls are easy to use--just choose a cooking time and temperature and the rotisserie does the rest. Levels of heat intensity can be adjusted by selecting up to four powerful heating elements. If you need to apply barbecue sauce or check doneness, the cooking can be paused while a handy oven light lets you see what's going on. All accessories wash up easily with hot water and dish soap--even the roll-up cover comes off for cleaning. --Marianne Painter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big George "Way To Go"
This machine is so great , it is larger than i expected . Let me start by telling you it is a top quality appliance . I have found it very easy to clean ,the roll top cover is great and gives you plenty of room to put your food in . The slide out grease tray works very well and is easy to get in and out . And i will also say that the manual does suggest that you line it with foil and add 2 cups of water to it . I think if people did this they wouldn't have a problem with smoke as i have read in some reviews . Wow , a manual can be helpfull. I have only had mine for a short time but the food has been great !! The chicken was so juicy . The meat was cooked to perfection . Oh and did i tell you how quiet this machine is ?? I was so surprised. My next plan is to make a pie in it , i am sure it will be great . Thanks so much George for a great machine !!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Available at Spiegel.com on clearanceplususe coupon 304
After reading reviews I decided I wanted one of these but unfortunately it had been discontinued from Amazon after they sold it on clearance at a great price. I found a similar great deal and I wanted to share the news with other hopeful BIG George owners. I got this at Spiegel.com for just under a hundred dollars. The shipping is for twenty four dollars flat rate. I did find an online coupon for twenty five percent off the clearance price. The coupon number is 304 but it is only good until 11/17/03. After that you will have to find another coupon. The coupon covered the cost of shippingand a little change. SO I ended up paying onehundred even and change. I havent recieved it yet and so I cant actaully review how it worksyet but I wanted to pass on my find while you can still get it. Good Luck to all. ... Read more

The Juiceman Electronic Professional Series 410 Elite Edition
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Kitchen
list price: $229.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Whether you're into nutrition-laden wheatgrass tonics or really superb fresh orange juice, a juicer is a great way to go. Fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, and additive-free fresh juice is a convenient and quick alternative to eating all of them whole. This professional-quality Juiceman makes the process very quick for the serious juice enthusiast. A few simple twists attach and detach the juice bowl, blade basket, and cover to and from the base unit, which has a footprint comparable to the average blender. Produce cut to the appropriate size goes in the feed tube, then is gently pressed into the blade basket with a plunger. Juice pours out one spout and the pulp--including seeds and skin--shoots out into a separate pulp basket. It has two speed settings, low for softer produce such as oranges and apples and high for harder fruits and vegetables such as carrots and pineapples--in practice this unit is plenty powerful enough to almost instantly go through baby carrots at low speed. Enjoy the juice and use the pulp in recipes such as those for carrot cake. A basic cookbook and audiotape of juicing tips are included. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

Features

  • Two-speed control for soft or hard produce
  • Powerful 1/2-horsepower motor quickly juices most fruits and vegetables
  • Makes tasty, nutritious, and additive-free juice blends
  • Stainless-steel blade, basket with micro-mesh strainer screens out pulp
  • High-capacity pulp receptacle for continuous juicing

1-0 out of 5 stars Returned 2 - Burnt Out Motors
Burnt out the motor on the first one within 3 months, exchanged for a new one, burnt out the motor on the 2nd one within 6 months.I only used the lower power setting and was only juicing carrots.

1-0 out of 5 stars Danger! Electric Shock Hazard! Noisy, vibrates and leaks.
Caution! This juicer may be hazardous to your health!

My brother and I have been juicing for almost 20 years. We've been through quite a few juicers including the champion (very heavy like a car starter motor), amongst others.

My brother had bought the original "Juiceman" years ago. As much as we juiced with it, about 2 to 4 times a day, it was necessary to send it in and have the motor rebuilt. This juicer needed a "key" to remove the grinder portion of the spinning basket assembly which lasted many years until the threaded bolt of the grinding wheel stripped. I managed repairing this my self with a little ingenuity and a grinder (tool) and replaced the bolt until finally the built in receptor nut stripped which I could do nothing about. I couldn't even find the manufacturer online though Google.

At any rate, on with the Juiceman 410 "professional" series. Professional?

It was OK in the beginning with the exception of needing to "jiggle" the lower portion of the juice housing upward to remove the pulp extractor basket. After a couple of weeks of juicing (2 to 3 times a day) the unit would vibrate terribly, mostly with carrots since they are the hardest vegetables we juice. It seemed to help a little after I had found a way to align the basket with the motor mount (and marking it off with a permanent marker). Plus the juice would leak out onto the motor housing and down the sides of the unit but who wants to go through all that? But wait there's more!

The dangerous part!

There is a "safety" button on the motor housing which prevents one from turning on the unit without the bowl, grinding wheel/basket and top attached while handling it until all the parts are in place. As I wiped the motor unit down with a wet cloth I just happened to run the washcloth over the safety button area and got a real shock, literally! I mean an electrical discharge! It happened once before when I touched the same area with a damp finger.

Here's a real "clincher." My mother came to me this evening and said that while no one was near the unit, it turned on all by itself! WOW! Spooky.

As with any product anyone could have the misfortune of getting a lemon one but this Juiceman "professional" 410 is a terrible choice.

I would not only recommend that this unit not be purchased but that it should be recalled. I have yet to contact the manufacturer but will keep you updated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for closets...
...and any other small spaces that need some extra light. These handy lights are not designed to be task lighting, nor are they meant to light up entire rooms. But they do provide sufficient light to guide you in a darkened room or hallway so you don't have to wake everyone else up by turning on the bright overhead light. And they are a LOT safer than candles during a power outage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source of light, especially in emergencies.
It's true that the tap light does not provide enough light to light up your whole living room, but what do you expect from 4 AA batteries. I don't think these lights were invented to light up big rooms, but I have found them to be very useful in closets, utility rooms, basements and hallways. I currently own eight of them and they provide enough light for my small rooms, for bigger rooms, I simply put two. They're easy to install and last pretty long. I am very pleased and think they come in handy, especially during loss of power. They are alot safer than turning on candles. They are light weight, small and look pretty anywhere in your house. I don't have a light in my car trunk, so I've even installed on there. The price is reasonable, I'm satisfied with the product and it does come with a warranty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough light
I purchased a case of these to add a little light to the cubby holes that our employees work in.The light was so dim it actually made it more dreary than not having the light at all.It is okay for a night lite, but nothing more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great clamp in any size
The big benefit to these is that you get true mobility out of them. While holding a piece of work, lined up, in one hand, you use these quick grips in the other hand to secure the work. If it slips while clamping, it is still a one handed tool to release it, and reclamp it again. Enables you to maintain a professional flow to your work. I feel awkward when using regular clamps in comparison. They require two hands. You could use a spring clamp to hold it together, then get another clamp to give it a final hold, but the quick grip saves you from having to do that.
Having these clamps in a few different sizes is beneficial as well. Small ones are more frequently used, and don't get in the way. The 33 1/2" is great when you need to hold larger projects together, and you can't effectively use two smaller ones to substitute. Additionally the macro clamps give you deeper jaws for a farther reach, enabling you to use them for securing work, to your radial arm saw table for example. They are fast enough to be used for almost any application. Sometimes I use them to secure work when sanding with a power sander. A couple squeezes and they are on, and one squeeze and they pop off.
After getting the smaller ones, and using them, I immediately order two of the 33 1/2" for larger projects, and for tie downs on equipment, including the drill press, and occasionally the radial arm saw.
Their is a small rubber stopper, which you can readily remove, in order to reverse the end, and make it a spreader as well. Something not needed very often, but difficult to achieve without one of these.
One note is that these have built in rubber pads, that completely cover the metal internal end. That is an advantage when you do not want to mar the wood. That and the fact that you can squeeze these with one hand, creates a mechanism that is easy to use, but not something that you would want to use for strength clamping. As a safety measure, these clamp sufficiently for most operations, but a threaded bar clamp, is stronger. So for those operations where extreme strength is needed, these are not the clamps to use. You sacrifice mountain holding strength for the ease of use. For example if I was using a large bit on the drill press, and drilling into metal, I would clamp it with something more. Even the slightest movement in an operation like that, could cause a snag, sending the piece into movement. If you are using just one of them, at the end of a 24" board, and decide to rout the other end, it will move on you. Securing it with two of them, and it is super tied down. You get my drift.
The big advantage of quick grip clamps, is that they handle wood beautifully, even for glue up operations. Hold workpieces more than securely to do the job in most applications, and are so handy that they deserve more than 5 stars. I would feel lost without them. It is another tool in the must have category.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick -Grip Bar Clamp is outstanding
This Quick-Grip Clamp exceeded my expectations with its ease of use, durability, and gripping power. A must for the workshop.

Editorial Review

Originally invented and marketed in Germany, the Garden Weasel is still an amazing garden tool, even after 15 years of "As Seen on TV" advertising here in the States. Its self-cleaning rotary cutters run crosswise against each other, meeting about 1-1/2 inches below the ground to break the surface soil and creating a fine till with their scissorlike action. Use this tool to break up soil in large areas or wide rows or to scarify soil for seeding. If you remove a few of the blades, you can work on exceptionally narrow rows or around plants. By using the short handle (included), you can work in greenhouses or rock gardens. Clearly, there are many uses for this tool--it's hard to imagine, but after all these years, it's still one of the best cultivators on the market. Ingenious design, versatile applications, and solid construction have kept this tool at the top for decades. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be called a Garden Wiz
I've had my weasel for a couple of years now and I love it.I have a vegetable garden about 12'X12' and this weasle is a wiz in it.Excellent to use weekly to rid my garden of beginner weeds, if you use it regularly you won't have a problem with weeds.

It also works good to airiate bad spots in your lawn and break up the compacted soil for new grass to grow.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a useless tool
What a waste of money. It won't cultivate, it won't weed, it won't even mix soft soils together. If you want to break your back scratching the surface of your yard or spend hours untangling the impenetrable foliage tapestry the blades will create, then this is the tool for you.If you actually want to accomplish something, you're better off buying a hoe, a rake, or a sharp, pointy stick.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like most as seen on TV items...
I'm probably going to get blasted with no helpfuls for this review, but I've got to call a spade a spade.Growing up my family's summer project was driving to my grandparents farm and growing about 3 acres of winter squash. We started every saturday at about 6:00 am and worked through the day until 4 or 5 at night. There were 3 hoes around the farm that were fought over and a couple that were ok.My father to try and help out the situation bought one of these garden weasels, which soon became the most fought over tool around... to not have to use it.After everyone had tried it for a few rows (the rows were longer than you are thinking... no raised beds) it got left in the shed every time. After the first day that garden weasel was not used again.Save yourself the cash and buy a real hoe, designed for use in a garden.People have been using hoes for hundreds of years and I don't think much progress has been made in the last 20 years on the designs.Stick to the traditional.Unfortunately as much as I love amazon (see my other reviews) I don't see many options for hoes here. There are a couple of scuffle or stirrup hoes, I have only cursory experience with this kind of hoe and can't say you should buy one.Tierra looks to have a couple of hoes with promise but I shrink a bit at the price. My personal favorites can be found from a company called Prohoe or from Lehmans.Sorry Amazon, one thing you don't have. ...
