    Editorial Review

For years, Milwaukee's Sawzalls have been valued for their outstanding ability to cut through almost any material: wood, nail-embedded wood, steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, drywall, composition materials, hard rubber, cement, brick, plaster, and fiberglass. The Super Sawzall features variable-speed control, with a speed control dial for faster cutting and better efficiency and control over a wide range of materials and applications. The blade is reversible, too, allowing you to cut upside down in tight spaces. For those of you who've grown up with Sawzalls, you'll appreciate the addition of the handy Quik-Lok blade clamp, which lets you change blades quickly without having to use a hex wrench; this feature is especially convenient when you're cutting hard materials, such as steel, a situation in which blades break frequently. There's also a handy quick lever adjustment for the shoe.

We really like this tool's counterbalancing mechanism, which reduces some of the unavoidable vibration found in reciprocating saws. The difference you feel when operating this tool, compared to nonbalanced saws, is significant: the Super Sawzall is still extremely powerful, yet it has a smooth feel. As a result, of course, you can work longer with less fatigue than you can using other, unbalanced saws. Another significant feature is the clutch, which absorbs shock and impacts to the internal mechanics caused by sudden blade lockups (typically encountered during extreme use). While this is unquestionably a heavy tool, it does have a comfortable, ergonomically designed rubber grip that gives you a solid hold. And you can rely on the Super Sawzall to handle the most difficult jobs, either at home or at work. --Tim Block ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars only super when it works
i bought this tool when it first came out and it has broken 3 times under light-to-medium use. i could have purchased a whole new tool by now. each time it has been the same problem, the clutch mechanism breaks. the clutch mechanism is linked to the piston that moves the blade back and forth. the clutch stalls the blade, in the event that the blade is pinched, like when cutting a stud at the bottom plate and the the weight of the stud soon shifts onto the blade, sending all that vibration into your arms. the clutch also prevents over torquing the motor. when it works, it's awesome. now i use my dad's old 4 amp milwaukee. this tool was built to last. i'm not sure why the new milwaukee isn't built like their older tools.
i'll probably switch to a different tool, instead of repairing my not-so-super sawzall again. i've looked at the new bosch, but it doesn't have anti-vibration, like their older models. i've never used the hitachi "swing-action" sawzall or the porter-cable angle-adjust TIGER CLAW. i'll probably go with the HILTI with the "smart motor." so many companies are forgoing quality and adding gadgets to their tools to get people to buy them. i just want quality. now that home depot/rigid owns milwaukee, i hope their quality doesn't drop any futher.

2-0 out of 5 stars not all its cracked up to be
I am a contractor and have used this saw extensively the past 2 years. It replaced its predecessor but has not held up like the first. It's been in the shop a few times for the quick change breaking, and now is having a motor problem that is going to need fixing. The variable speed has also stopped working. It's been small items but they add up. The power has been more than ample, the disconnect cord is very useful, but I'm not sure I'm going to stick with Milwaukee this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars very easy on your hands and arms
This is the best sawzall I have ever used.
there is very little viberation in the tool.
The quick change for the blades is wonderful and very time saving.
I don't know why I didn't buy this saw before. ... Read more

Porter-Cable 843K7-1/4" Blade-Left Circular Saw Kit with Electric Brake
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $178.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

A so-called left-handed saw, Porter-Cable's 7-1/4-inch blade-leftcircular saw is an excellent choice for builders who want a saw with power (ithas a 15 amp motor) but not the heft of a wormdrive (it weighs only 10-1/2pounds). Traditionally, sidewinder saws have the blade on the right side, somost right-handers are accustomed to looking over the saw to sight a line. Aleft-side blade lets a left-hander cut the same way--and some right-handedusers, especially those accustomed to using (blade-left) wormdrive saws, willalso appreciate the better blade visibility such a saw affords. In the end, it'sreally just a matter of personal preference.

To lighten the saw, Porter-Cable used lightweight, durable magnesium--whichwon't crack or bend--for the blade guards and part of the housing. The saw'sstill tough, though; in fact, Porter-Cable boasts that this saw can sustain upto a 6-foot drop without damage. This saw also sports a very flat, very strongcast-magnesium table, too, with reinforced ribs that make it very difficult tobend or break. (Can someone tell us why some companies ruin a good saw by givingit a wimpy table?)

Porter-Cable took care of the details, too. The no-catch lip on the blade guardensures the guard won't catch on an edge at the beginning of a cut, and it keepsa user's hands away from the retraction lever. This model comes with atwo-second electric brake, a feature for which you pay extra, but that reduces thechance of accidents and can minimize the wait between cuts. The 360-degreeadjustable top dust nozzle lets you direct sawdust in any direction, and you caneasily attach a dust bag or a shop vac to collect the dust--a particularly handyfeature for a remodeler who wants to make a couple of cuts indoors withoutmaking a mess. There's also a clip on the top of the saw that lets you clamp thecord off to the side when you're cutting sheet material, so it's less likely todrag behind and snag the edge. A heavy-duty carrying case comes included, too, though it's a little tricky getting the saw to fit inside. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

Milwaukee 0234-6 1/2" Magnum Hole Shooter

    Editorial Review

For day in, day out drilling and driving in wood, steel, or plastic, there might not be a better tool than Milwaukee's Magnum hole shooter. The aluminum/magnesium alloy on the gear case cuts down on the tool's weight, and the glass-reinforced nylon handle makes it a bit lighter, too--but let there be no doubts: when it comes to results, this is the same heavy-duty, ridiculously powerful, no-nonsense tool it's always been. The shooter is built with a stacked design--meaning the drill's interior parts stack on top of each other--which makes replacing parts (like a switch) much easier to do as the whole drill doesn't need to be taken apart. The handle is designed so you can hold it two ways--either pistol-grip or with the palm of your hand resting on the top back portion--making the drill an extension of your arm. As a result, you can really get behind it while still easily reaching the trigger with your fingers. And the finger slots add comfort. The shooter's top-quality chuck is a Jacobs (the best). It's a two-handed chuck, which, for the types of applications this drill is built for, is exactly what you want. The carbon brushes are also easy to access and change.

One of our favorite new features on this tool is the long and superflexible Quick-Lok cord. If the cord gets cut or damaged, you simply unplug the damaged cord and replace it with the cord from any other Quick-Lok Milwaukee tool. If you're looking for a serious, long-lasting drill, you can't go wrong here. Milwaukee's hole shooter is a very high-quality tool that will serve you for years and years and years. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnum for a reason
If Dirty Harry worked in the trades this would be his gun. I have drilled, screwed, mixed, and sanded with Makita, Bosch, B&D, and Craftsmen (it was a desparate moment). The majority performed well. Makita and Bosch had pretty good power and got the job done. I didn't care for the keyless chuck or the adjustable handle on the Bosch that I used. B&D and Craftsmen struggled with big bits in big wood and usually got hot enough to put them down and leave them alone for a while, (and the bits were sharp).

Which leads to the hole shooter. Which leads to power.

From big buckets of thinset, to drywall mud, plus some augers and lags thrown in for good measure, the hole shooter performed with flying colors. The only time it "gave up" was a delibrate test of my own curiousity. 1/2" x 3" lag, with an 1/8" pilot, into a 4x4. Even the hole shooter needs the right size of pilot. But I should say it broke the socket arbor "fighting the good fight."

The fixed handle (right or left) at 90 degrees of the trigger, provides a tremendous amount of stabilty and control. This is especially handy when mixing mud, or punching through plates when you need to brace it against something. It's nice to be able to focus on the task at hand without having to worry that your support handle isn't going to slip.

Keyed chuck. The only way to secure the monster bits or paddles. Keyless in this arena just don't provide enough bite.

The trigger is great. No one or two finger triggers here. It runs almost the full length of the handle. Again, one less thing to worry about when your picking up your tool and getting down to business. The variable speed is just senstive enough and it's consistent.

Quick lok cord is nice. I was a bit skeptical on just how secure is was going to stay in place, but so far its performed flawlessly, which is now over 2 1/2 years old.

The low rpms is the only drawback for high speed drilling. But I can overlook this, because what you gain elsewhere significantly outweighs this minor issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Burly Drill
I have owned this drill for a couple of years now and agree with other reviewers' comments. You have to respect the power abd durability of this drill.

I dropped the drill about 6' to 7' down onto the opposing side of a roof I was working from.As the drill was still plugged in, I pulled it up the roof by the cord. There were a few scratches in the case (from impacting the shingles), but that was all as far as damage was concerned. It still ran like a top.

This drill is not one I use often; my cordless drills get most of the day-to-day action. But when you need what this drill can deliver--incredible torque, and relatively low speed, this is the tool to go with.A co-worker recommended this to me before I bought it and I must say he was right.

If you drill metal or run big diameter hole saws, your search for a drill is over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty powerful, plenty durable
Don't be mislead by the gimmicks and styling of other 1/2" drills out there. This beast is all you need for truly heavy duty work like running large hole saws, mixing drywall mud, or just drilling monster holes with big bits! This machine is the standard by which others are judged and has been for years. It is ridiculously overpowered and its durable engineering hasn't changed. It's still the best.

Milwaukee makes a keyless chuck version of this drill, but I do not recommend it. For the types of tasks this drill is designed to handle, you will want no possibility of slippage. The keyed chuck on this drill is as beefy as they get and is up to any task. Milwaukee also makes an 8 amp version of this drill. Such a machine seems like it would almost be dangerous, as this 5 amp version is perfectly capable of wrenching your arm. More amps isn't always better. This drill does not slow down, and would probably blow a circuit before it stalled.

The removable cord is a nice feature, as is the removable and ambidextrous side handle. The only thing this machine lacks off the shelf is a good case, but the genuine Milwaukee steel case is available from various distributors for about $35. A very wise investment, this excellent case will protect your tool for years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Saw
After using a friends SKIL saw a few times, I promised myself that I would purchase a good saw when the time came. I bought the Milwaukee, and let me say that it is no SKIL saw. This saw is great. At first I thought it was a little big and bulky for my intended use, but I am glad I got this model. The brake is a great safety feature. No more waiting for the blade to stop. You can't go wrong with this purchase. The only bad thing is the case is huge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing compares
If you're an amateur or professional you have to check out this saw. There is a 30 day trial period on this saw, just try it! I have been in construction 30 years, my most favorite saw was the old style Hitachi and when my last one died I was at a dilemma on which saw to buy. First I bought the new style Hitachi, no thanks, I ended up selling it. Next I bought the new 324 mag from Porter Cable, sorry, the magnesium shoe leaves black marks on everything you cut and the dust exhaust, though a good idea, just blows the dust in the air and on a slightly windy day it's all over you. I tried the milwaukee tilt-lock as a last resort because of frustration. Actually I was wishing for my old, old style Rockwell saw which died in the seventies. But I tried this saw from Milwaukee, a total homerun. No saw has perfect dust collection and if they say so, they're lying. All conditions are different. If you want a saw that handles awesome with normal dust control, this is the saw.At least consider the 30 day trial offer.By the way I do have a 324 mag for sale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Saw!
I've had this saw about a month now and I am very impressed. This is one powerful, tough, saw. As a remodeling contractor I am very hard on tools and this saw can take the abuse.I have owned several other circular saws and this is easily my favorite.I also have the Porter Cable blade on left which I have used the last 3 years. I like the Porter Cable and I love the visibility of the blade on left, but it always feels out of balance in my hand since I am right-handed, and when setting up cuts you often find that the majority of the saw's shoe and weight is being supported by the off cut side, because the blade on left is meant for left handers.

The Milwaukee 6390 has solved this problem. It is extremely well balanced and the design of the blade opening in the shoe allows for excellent visibility of the cut line from above the saw. As a right hander you do not need to lean over the saw to see your cut line. Some guys are in such a habit of doing just that, and it is a hard habit to break.I have pointed out to them how you can easily see the cut line from above and they always comment on how great that is.

The bevel adjustment handle is large and sturdy and easy to adjust.Bevel cuts on this saw are the best I have ever experienced. It will cut bevels up to 51 degrees or so like butter. No bogging or binding whatsoever.

Two minor complaints that Milwaukee should address is that the shoe has a little bump on the edge at each corner, so that if you are using a straight edge like a speed square as a cutting guide, those little bumps will cause you to not get a perfectly square cut. To solve this I just filed them off. The other thing is that I did not like the thin kerf blade that came with the saw.I put on a heavy duty carbide framing blade and the saw cuts much smoother, and quieter.I get perfectly square cuts now, and this thing will go through a stud so smoothly it feels like 1 X .

Despite its minor flaws the Milwaukee is still deserving of 5 stars especially when you start comparing other saws. The Porter Cable is a close second in my book, but the combination of balance, power, control, and adjustments of the Milwaukee make it my top choice.Highly recommend. ... Porter-Cable 690P 1-1/2 HP Router
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $302.20
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Porter-Cable's 1-1/2-horsepower router is popular with woodworkers for good reason. It's reliable, powerful, and exceptionally smooth running--not to mention versatile. Although the 690P comes with a two-handle fixed base, the motor is interchangeable with Porter-Cable's excellent plunge base or D-handle base. Both matching bases are available separately for much less than the cost of a new router, and switching bases for different applications is a quick and easy operation.

We really appreciate Porter-Cable's new autorelease collet design, which prevents bits from getting frozen in the machine. It'd be great if Porter-Cable could come up with an alternative to needing two wrenches for a bit change, but this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the tool's overall quality. In fact, Porter-Cable's focus on simple, quality engineering is the reason for this model's long-lasting success. The router doesn't offer electronic variable-speed control or enough power to effectively double as a shaper, but it is among the smoothest-running routers we've tried, producing consistently clean results. For most applications it offers all the versatility and muscle you could ask for. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

The 690 has great power, moter can easily can spin right off it's base under a router table. Now pc has designed a new base lock haven't tried it yet .

2-0 out of 5 stars A dissatisfied customer
There is nothing inherently wrong with the router, but the router is unusable out of the box. The base plate supplied with unit will not allow you to use a number of conventional bits- I was not able to use a .375" rabbeting bit- the hole is too small. The plate is set for use with the bushing set that sells separately for about [dollar amount].Porter Cable will sell you a second base plate for [dollar amount]. Also, the on/off switch is a toggle swith on the top of the unit. This location is unsafe- to shut the unit off you have to hold it with one hand & reach around for the switch. You can buy a different base with a trigger switch (standard on most other routers, Sears, Hitachi, Ryobi) for [dollar amount]. I bought the second base for [dollar amount] but built a foot switch for [dollar amount] to use with the router rather than pay [dollar amount]. But the real question is why do we have to buy all these extras just to use the router when other brands supply them as a matter of course? Craftsman sells a 1/2" collet, 2 hp unit for [dollar amount]with a trigger switch & usable right out of the boxx

5-0 out of 5 stars What's the problem?
I've owned one of these dandy little routers for some time now - I also use a 2 hp variable speed Bosch. The plunge base works with both routers, and has proved to be very handy...The quality of this tool and its rugged construction far outweigh the placement of the switch or the fact that you use two wrenches to change bits...A router (like any tool) should be judged primarily by the quality of work it is capable of, and that's where this little baby shines.... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great within its limits.
My wife bought me this for Christmas last year.(You gotta love tools for Christmas.)The grinder is great for everything I have used it for.Cutting steel, grinding welds, grinding some concrete and masonry. The only thing that it doesn't work for is the lack of a guard that is designed to work with diamond wheels.I needed to cut some concrete and I needed to use a diamond wheel to do it, come to find out you've got to drop a good chunck of change for a different guard.Well, I figured out another way to get done what I needed, didn't buy the new guard and still like the grinder. It should have come with a guard that would work for whatever you are going to use it for. That said, if you're not going to ever use diamond wheels, this grinder works well and I have no reservations recommending it.

3-0 out of 5 stars want to trade it for a coffee grinder?
I bought this tool with the sole intention of cutting concrete for repair work around the yard. The fact that the guard supplied isn't rated for the 4 1/2" diamond wheel was a shame, I should have looked at the price of the "additional accessories" before I bought this thing, it turns a reasonable purchase into one I would reconsider. So, casting safety asside, I used the standard guard. In all, it's a fair grinder. I cut through 3" slab no problem, ground the edges on a set of brick pillars. The switch then started to get 'sticky' from all the dust...I should have bought the Bosch.

DeWalt makes good tools for the homeowner. I purchased this grinder because it looked and handled well. I wanted to use the grinder with a cut off wheel but found it can not without an adapter. DeWalt needs to put this information on the box. I had to return the grinder for this reason. This heavy duty grinder only does light duty tasks. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

DeWalt packs it all into this 12-inch compound miter saw: the big blade, the double bevel, the double rail slide. Very impressive. Finish carpenters who want to miter crown molding (up to 5-1/4 inches) vertically and framers who demand a 12-inch crosscut capacity will love this saw's 12-inch blade. The double bevel, of course, means you flip the saw instead of the wood, a great feature for those working with long molding or in confined spaces. The saw bevels to 45 degrees both ways and has the ability to bevel up to 48 if the need arises. The double rail slide is definitely burlier than the old single rail design. Both rails slide on self-cleaning, dust-sealed bearings, too.

What really gets us is the weight and balance of this saw: it slides smoothly through cuts, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels lightly (all of which speak to the saw's excellent design). You can miter 50 degrees left, 60 degrees right. We also appreciated the cam-lock miter gauge on this saw--the handle simply clamps down, which makes switching angles noticeably quicker than with a twist-lock miter.

DeWalt's D-handle is designed for right-handed use, but the trigger is big enough to use comfortably with your left hand if a particular cut requires it. The saw also has a depth-stop adjuster in case you have to cut a quick dado or two at the job site. The easy-to-read stainless-steel miter scale, with 11 positive stops allows you to lock in the most common angles quickly and, thanks to the cam-lock miter, it's also easy to dial in precise cuts just over or under the positive stop--a feature finish carpenters, in particular, will love. The electric blade stops the blade quickly, which saves time and makes work safer. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... The vertical sliders was the dumbest idea going. not only a terrible saw altogether, but the thing wobbled like hell!
I'd either go with the Bosch or the Makita over this piece of trash.Total waste of money!
I have yet to have a good experience with ANY of DeWalt's tools.
I know go with Bosch/ Makita.
Overall, save yourself time and money: DON'T BUY DEWALT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Face The Facts
DeWalt makes a great miter saw any way that you look at it.I know the non-conformists disagree, but face the facts, DeWalt miter saws are solid performers. I've owned my 12 inch slider for nearly three years, and it works perfectly.I purchased a stablemate stand for it and the two go together very nicely.I like the power it has and the accuracy is superb. If you do knock the alignment out, it is easy to adjust. While I wouldn't touch a DeWalt jig saw with a 10 foot pole, their miter saws are top-notch.If you are doing a lot of intricate millwork, I would also buy the DeWalt 10 inch miter saw for increased accuracy on smaller moldings.

    Editorial Review

The heart of any table saw is the fence, and DeWalt's smooth-sliding, unique double-cam action fence locks down tight and always travels parallel to the blade. The fence face shifts forward, too, giving you the option--if a cut requires it--of extra fence area in front of the blade. The fence can also drop flush to the table for ripping laminates.

In fact, this saw is riddled with great, user-friendly features. There's an oversize, left-side on/off switch that lets you bump the saw off with your knee if you run into trouble while making a cut. It's exactly this sort of attention to detail that wins a lot of people over to DeWalt products. The blade-elevation crank is also set lower on this saw than most, so there's plenty of hand clearance for making blade height adjustments. Again, this might seem like a minor touch until you think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy, metal bevel scale is a nice touch, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws. The saw's inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor is quiet, cuts down on vibration, and makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard motor saws, a feature you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw's got plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT A UNISAW....
But I don't think it was suppose to be. It's billed as a "hybrid" and I think as such it does a pretty good job. I've had mine for a couple of years now and yep...had to do some improvements to it. First the miter gauge...its junk..toss it and get an Osborne EB-3, build a good panel sled and you've got that problem solved. Toss the throat plate and get a Tru-Cut, its easier to get level and the replacable inserts are the cats meow. The blade guard, splitter and dogs are adequate, haven't seen anything on the market that would work better, so I have just learned to live with it. The dust collection part was actually the easiest to fix, I removed the lower blade "cover" that the 2" dust hose was connected to, enclosed the back of the saw with a scrap piece of veneer, then enclosed the bottom of the saw with a piece of 1/4 in ply with a 4" connector epoxied to it. Once or twice a year I open the plastic side and with the chip collector running I blow out the saw to get the little that doesn't go on its own, this is when I also do the little bit of maintenance that is nec... lube, oil, etc.
The fence....yeah well the fence...I've actually had very good luck with my fence. Its pretty solid and the face doesn't have the cup or deflection that several reviewers have reported. Once I got it "zeroed" its stayed pretty much where it belongs. But adding accesories to it is a pain. Feather boards, stop blocks, etc., have to be custom built and arn't exactly works of art. This is where a Biesmeyer really shines, as it is simple to add attachments to the Biesmeyer. I do 90% of my cutting with the miter gauge or a sled, so I don't really feel the need to upgrade the fence.
99% of the cutting I do is Hardwoods. Especially exotics, vera, quebracho, mesquite, and a lot of burl maple. I've never had the saw bog down or had the breaker kick out. I only use Frued thin kerf blades and keep em sharp. I also use Dri Cote on my blades and cutters and feel this really makes a differance.
My woodworking buddy has the Jet Supersaw (see review). Its a good saw, but he's had to make "improvements" also. We both still enjoy using our saws and of course we both think we got the best one.
If you buy the Dewalt or the Jet, expecting a UniSaw, you will be disappointed. But I do think its better than a contractors saw, I had a Sears and a Delta contractors saw and I like this one a lot better. More stable, more surface area on the table (I did add the cast iron wings to both sides)and the noise level is less than either of my contractors saws.
I added the Dewalt mobile base (separate review)...in a small shop its a must...the after markets don't make it, go with the Dewalt base.
I would recommend the Dewalt 746 or the Jet Supersaw to anyone looking for a "cabinet" saw with a smaller profile and a smaller price than the Unisaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars I studied a long time before buying this saw...
My woodworking hobby outgrew my starter saw a few years ago, but circumstances did not allow me to buy a new saw until this year. Since I really wanted to take my time with this decision, I studied the market, put my hands on every saw I could, and read everything I could find on the web about table saw features. Since I work in a library, I also had access to every table saw review in most of the woodworking magazines.

Eventually I came up with the following criteria:

    - I have a one car garage for a workshop, so space was a big issue. I was only looking at saws with 30" capacity to the right of the blade. I also limited my search to saws that could be pushed flat against a wall if need be. This left only hybrids and cabinet saws to consider.

    - I wanted the most powerful motor I could get without having to switch to 240 volts, yet have the option to rewire the saw for 240v later if I so choose (thus eliminating 3hp saws).

    - I wanted a solid fence that was accurate and DID NOT DEFLECT when locked down.

    - I wanted some decent dust collection abilities.

    - I wanted a quieter saw with less vibration than my old Delta contractor's saw.

    - I wanted to spend less than $1000 to get the saw, yet have lots of options for upgrading/outfitting later.

Eventually I chose the DeWalt 746, and here are my observations:

The saw package arrived in relatively undamaged crating (seven days after I ordered it from Amazon), and the saw was in perfect condition. Here's a tip - I ordered this saw over the phone and was given the option to pay $25 to have the saw delivered on the ground in my shop - well worth it! Assembly was not too bad (3 hrs), but the manual could have been a bit better. In my mind it was a bit too small and the illustrations corresponding to each step of assembly were not always on the same page! This saw is heavy and the cabinet/stand is very stiff and strong. I feel that the base of this saw is a much better design than the open stand of my old Delta. The saw also runs very smoothly - it is A LOT quieter than my last saw and vibration is at a minimum. The motor is about as powerful as you can get while running 120v without popping breakers left and right (which I have read is a common problem with the 2hp motors running 120v). I have not had any problems ripping 8/4 white oak with a good sharp blade... Speaking of blades, the one that came with this saw is inferior. I will keep it just for those instances where I want to cut treated lumber for outside projects or some other such task not requiring precision or smooth cuts. I have always wanted a Biesenmeyer fence, but I read good things about the fence on this saw and was eager to try it for myself. I am pleased to say that it is a very sturdy (and heavy) fence with some ingenious features. Most importantly this fence operates very smoothly, it does not deflect when locked down, it was easy to adjust square to the miter slot and blade, and zeroing the fence scale could not have been easier. I did have to fuss with it a bit to get the fence face set 90 degree to the table, but once I got it there it seems to hold the setting well. Dust collection on this saw is absolutely excellent. I hooked up my Fein Turbo II vacuum and basically no significant sawdust escapes. I couldn't be happier in that department. As for safety features, I like splitters and hate blade guards so I was pleased to find that the splitter/blade guard on this saw is able to be separated (I did just that). The splitter is easily adjustable and works well.

As far as downsides go... Well, as I mentioned earlier the assembly manual could have been way better and the blade that came with the saw is junk. Also (and I read this several places ahead of time) the table is not absolutely flat. Using a straightedge I found a couple of hollows in the surface. I don't think they are significant enough to throw off the accuracy of what I am doing with this saw, but be forwarned that if you use a tablesaw to cut something more intricate than tenons you may have a problem with this. Unlike other reviewers I didn't have too much of a problem with the steel extension wings that came with this saw. When installed properly are they perfectly level to the main table? Yes. Are they perfectly flat? No, but acceptible for what they are. I wanted a good saw that could be upgraded and these are good enough for temporary use. In fact there are a host of great accessories/upgrades available for this saw. I already ordered a cast iron router table wing (made by Bench Dog) and soon I plan to order the DeWalt cast iron wing for the other side of the saw.

When it comes down to it, I am very pleased with this saw. The features all met or exceeded my personal needs. This is important, because I have no doubt I could have gotten a saw that performed nearly as well for a lot less money, but it would have failed to meet one or more of MY criteria. As for the price - I bought mine at a time when the saw was on sale and the mobile base was included (see my separate review of the mobile base). The sale price coupled with Amazon's ongoing deal of 25 dollars off any order over 199 gave me this saw at more than a seventy dollar discount. If your needs are similar to mine, then take a close look at this saw. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars good saw for the money
I have had this saw for about 18 months now, and am pretty
    satisfied with it.

Plusses: everything worked out of the box; solid saw, a lot
better than a portable; blade aligned with miter slots; has
    worked solidly for 18 months.

Minuses: the fence was not perpendicular to the table (vertical)
and needed shimming; I think the fence is pretty accurate, but
it doesn't lend itself to sacrificial add-ons or using the
back (right) side of the fence; the 2 1/4 inch dust collection
    port is "fair" at best; the included miter gauge is useless;
the stamped metal wings are cheesy; the motor is not strong
enough to push a blade that isn't pretty sharp through thicker
woods; the splitter is ok but is a *pain* to install and take off.

All in all, this sits right in the middle between a portable
and a good Unisaw.I think you get your money's worth, but
this is not a *great* product, i.e. where you get more than
what you paid for. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches.

The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch.

This model comes with a smooth gliding 52-inch Delta Unifence. It's made fromanodized aluminum extrusions built to stay true though a long life of use. There's atwo-position fence face that can be quickly switched to offer better support for tallerstock or better visibility and low clearance for working with small stock or laminates. Italso provides a ripping capability on either side of the blade. The Unifence includes ahairline pointer and a built-in steel tape to ensure accuracy to within 1/64 of an inch, andit can be depended on to remain parallel to the blade and deliver dead-on accurate resultsevery time. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is Accuracy?
I've lusted for one of these for years. I finally got it and was eager to make that first cut after spending 8 hours assembling the saw, fence, mobile base, outfeed table and Deluxe Uniguard. I thought I'd check the blade runout, first, just to make sure....It measured .115" difference across the width of my 10" "set and sand" CMT alignment blade blank as measured from the right side miter slot. That's almost an eighth of an inch! It required loosening the table from the base, plus the trunnions from the top, to realign the blade with the miter slots. Took six hours. I'd always thought that Delta alignment "out of the box" was legendary....If this is what you get from a Premium American Manufacturer, maybe I'll go Taiwanese next time. ... Also the particle board extension table was so badly warped across the narrow dimension that I had to put (4) 1-1/2" angle iron supports under it to get it reasonably flat. Otherwise the fence would not make the transition from table to extension surface.
I still like this saw, and all of the maladies were repairable, however, I get the distinct impression that quality control has taken a back seat to production numbers. The saw still represents a great value, and with careful setup, works magnificently, however, setup took me an entire weekend overall.
The saw assembly is huge, the mobile base is an absolute necessity in my two-car woodshop...The stock guard/splitter assembly (Isn't good), the Deluxe Uniguard is the only way to go, or the pricier Biesemeyer. Everything fitted together very well. ... Read more

When you're ready to step up to the professional woodworking scene, this jointer from Delta helps design your calling card. Materials up to 8 inches wide glide across the cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables. The fence adjusts with rack-and-pinion precision, beveling 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees to give you the angle your work demands. We appreciate the easy height-adjustment lever that keeps the guide close to the three-blade drum--no matter what the position--through its 1/2-inch range via a parallelogram support structure. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side. Driven by a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for use with a built-in dust collector port, this jointer will complement any woodshop. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Accurate
I bought my DJ-20 from Amazon about three years ago.Delivered inside my garage via lift gate truck -- not bad!The cuts were like glass or as someone else said, like 220 sanded finish.I have the Delta mobile base which is extremely well built and very useful since very long infeed/outfeed tables can get in the way in a cramped workshop/garage.

I've only checked flatness with my 12" Starrett rule and couldn't find any low spots or warping.

It did come with a defective knife guard (painted red in picture - aluminum). The pivot hole had been machined too large so it angled toward the table.Maybe should be 4 ½ stars but rounding up since Delta sent me a replacement with zero hassles.

After nicking the blades bad enough to need replacing, I haven't been able to align new ones as well as the factory.Used Jointer-Pal and dial-indicator but when tightening the hold-down bolts the knives move a few hundredths.Probably user error.

On mine, top says made in Taiwan, cabinet says made in USA.I would buy this again without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Industry Standard
There are three primary requirements that all jointers must meet.1. The in feed and out feed tables must be perfectly parallel.2. The fence must form a right angle along it's entire length across both tables (if it doesn't form a right angle there's not much hope in getting it to work at other angles). And finally, 3. The in feed and out feed tables must be long to facilitate accurate straitening of lumber prior to being run through a thickness planer. All of these factors are met and in many ways exceeded by the Delta DJ 20.I've owned mine for 15 years and I can attest that this is the best jointer I have ever used.I've owned two combination jointer thickness planers in the past and neither of these machines came close to the DJ 20 for accuracy in jointing lumber. The mechanisms for either removing or lifting the joiner tables out of the way to use combination machines as a thickness planer effect the accuracy of the jointer tables, regardless of how well or heavily built these machines are (one of my combination machines was a 20" jointer / thicknesser and weighed almost 2000 lbs., horrible jointer, constant problems with table and fence alignment).I would never recommend combination machines to anyone other than a casual weekend warrior with very little workshop space.

The 8 inch capacity may seem limiting, but in reality this is not an issue. The parallelogram mechanism for both the in feed and out feed tables is superior to anything I've ever seen and it makes altering the depth of cut a snap. This machine is a beast as far as weight but a jointer needs to be heavy... really heavy.Nothing is more frustrating than a lightweight jointer "walking away" from you as you try and straighten lumber. My previous shop was in a basement, the DJ 20 slid down the stairs (with three people controlling it) like a dream. However, getting it out was interesting and took four strong men (three at the bottom pushing and one at the top pulling), ramps, dollies, tie down straps and a healthy amount of grunting... it was a miracle the three of us behind the machine came out alive.

One recommendation I would make for anyone considering the purchase of this machine is to get the mobile base. You may have the luxury of a permanent location for this machine, but the mobile base makes moving this monster so much easier. The mobile base also means someone is not reefing on your perfectly aligned in feed and out feed tables to get it to budge.Others have mentioned a problem with vibration.Mine had this issue when I first bought it, but I corrected this by ensuring that the motor and cutter head pulleys are in alignment.Dust collection is not an issue but don't buy the Delta attachment, as others have indicated it is for a 5" diameter hose.Instead buy a $5.00 plastic one and screw it to the cabinet, works just as well if not better.

When I purchased mine it was made in Brazil by Invicta.I'm not sure where the current models are made, but if Delta was smart they would not mess with something that was basically perfect and a standard piece of woodworking equipment in any shop dealing with solid wood.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One great machine
Without getting technical, I will sum this machine up by simply saying that after one year of regular use, my DJ-20 has performed flawlessly, completing every task I have asked of it to perfection.I could not be happier with it.I've straightened and flatenned many boards with it and I enjoy using it immensely...it is a true pleasure to use and own.I would buy it again and highly recommend it without reservation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The last US built Powermatic - soon to be discontinued...
As most US Craftsmen have noticed, nearly all woodworking manufactureres are off-shoring the manufacture of their machines.Powermatic (JET) is no exception; their PM 66 series tablesaw, their shapers, and a couple drill presses are all that remain of American made machinery.I picked up the 5HP saw with the Router Lift table and am very pleased with it.It won't be long before all of Powermatic will be made in Taiwan, so if you want an American made saw, you better act now.Your next best choice is General (not General International), which is made in Canada.General carries two lines one made in Canada and their General International which is the same Taiwan crap you find at Jet.Happy shopping. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SAW .... JUST DO NOT BUY ITFROM AMAZON
The saw is great.Just do not buy this from AMAZON!!!!I have waited for over six weeks for my saw and finally gave up(I was told in the sixth week of waiting that it wasw being shipped to AMAZON from the manufacture in 3-5 weeks and AMAZON was going to take another 3-5 weeks on top of that to get me my saw for a grand total of 5 moths!) So, I went to southern tools and they shipped the saw that day. I had my saw within three days (not weeks or months like AMAZON!!!)
I received the saw in seven boxes but it was very easy to set up! The boxes they used for the saw was reinforced with 2x4's.They even test the saw before it leaves the factory (give you a readout of the test results, which is great to use as a reference.)I got the mobile base and set up the saw in the base. The table saw was square right out of the box.Just follow the directions and you will have a great saw that will last for years!
Thank You Southern Tool for my table saw!
