JET JWTS-10CW2-PFX / 708305GK 10" Table Saw with Two Cast Iron Wings & 52" Homeshop Xacta Fence Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $1,119.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (19)
I suggest you buy the mobile base when you purchase it.I don't plan to move mine much, but I wouldn't want to have to movethis thing an inch without one.It seems like it would be easiest to assemble right on the stand like I did. Now that is together, it is a powerhouse!!!I look forward to using it for years to come.
The fence, though, needs help.My front support rail was badly warped and the rail sight (small plastic marker for setting measurements) was cracked, misprinted (not parallel to marks on rule), and simply didn't fit on the rail. The instructions are not very good and there was no list of included hardware so I could identify the various pieces.Alignment of this fence to the saw was a real pain in the neck.It should be noted that the Exacta fence is not manufactured by Jet but *for* them. Once assembled with replacement parts (good customer service), the fence works wonderfully.Measurements are right on the money, first try.The fence is extremely rigid and moves very smoothly. I gave the saw 5 stars because assembly is a one-time chore and the real measure is day-to-day useability. This saw is a great value, particularly since I only paid (price).I would buy it again in a heartbeat. ... Delta 17-965 16-Speed 16-1/2" Floor Drill Press by Delta Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $471.22 -- our price: $399.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If your projects require you to drill with big bits or if you find yourself attempting to drill with precision under questionable circumstances, this heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will help you get out of your, um, hole. Running off a 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts, it gives you an impressive deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches and holds up to 5/8-inch-diameter bits. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column give it the industrial feel and durability we look for in this type of tool. You'll enjoy the rotating work base--which bevels, of course, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles--as well as the depth stop that can be set quickly and easily with microadjustments and a locking mechanism, great for repetitive drilling. While other models sometimes place hard-to-read speed and belt charts under the top cap, Delta uses a wide, clearly legible chart to explain how to configure the belts for each of 16 speeds (215 to 2,720 rpm). And, thanks to the smooth, cool-running induction motor inside, you're not likely to find yourself shopping for a drill press again for an extremely long time. --Justin Paul ... Makita LS1013 Dual Slide Compound 10" Miter Saw Kit by Makita Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware (25 February, 2003) list price: $1,085.00 -- our price: $449.34 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle. The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material--a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. The saw's table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider crosscuts. The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electric brake, however; they're user-friendly features that make a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also has a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw also gives you the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more Features Reviews (77)

JET 708457GK / JJ-CSX 6" Woodworking Jointer includes Two Extra Sets of Knives FREE a $99.98 Value Tools & Hardware list price: $679.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When it comes to jointers, there aren't a lot of differences among the leaders in the market. Like other manufacturers, Jet uses heavy-duty cast iron in the fence, jointer base, and infeed/outfeed tables and offers a three-blade drum and built-in 4-inch dust port. Their design, however, features a couple of innovations that changed our "jointers are jointers" mindset. While the infeed tables in other models can only be raised or lowered with a rod or lever system, this machine's design allows you to adjust both of the feed tables by rotating smooth, industrial-style hand wheels. This feature lends itself to easier tapers and gives you more control when you need to take off precise measurements, like 1/64 of an inch, a setting that can frustrate woodworkers lifting the arms up or down on other machines. The fence glides extremely smoothly throughout its range of motion and tilts both ways, but, where other brands offer fixed stops only at 45 and 90 degrees, Jet's jointer adjusts to quickly reproduce multiple cuts at any angle you find necessary. Driven by a 4,850 rpm, 1-horsepower induction motor completely encased in a welded steel stand, this jointer comes prewired for 115-volt outlets and can be converted to run off 230-volt sources. As a final touch, Jet designed the industrial start switch with holes behind the button for locking with a readily available Master Lock to keep coworkers or family members safe from accidental injury. --Justin Paul ... Delta 22-560K 12-1/2" Portable Planer with Extra Knives and a Dust Chute--a $44.99 Value by Delta Tools & Hardware list price: $349.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When shopping for a portable planer, we recommend keeping two things in mind: performance and, to a lesser degree, transportability. Delta's 12-1/2-inch planer weighs only 65 pounds and packs small, so it doesn't break your back when you pick it up and takes up minimal space in a loaded truck. Performance is the real issue, however, and Delta's planer--constructed with a sturdy four-post design and a 15 amp, 120-volt motor--smoothes materials up to 12-1/2 inches wide and 6 inches thick to stain-ready quality. The unique threaded cutterhead lock quickly cranks tight (some competitors' models will loosen up over time), delivering impressive snipe control. Delta's planer has a feed rate of 26 feet per minute and can shave off up to 1/8 of an inch. But we are most impressed, frankly, by how easy it is to change blades. What used to be a major operation took us maybe four minutes. The double-edged blades remove easily, fit over machined posts, and automatically align. The process utilizes a little magnetic blade-removing tool that does require some finesse, but we caught on fast. The infeed and outfeed tables adjust, but they are noticeably shorter than DeWalt's--which means the Delta planer is more compact but offers slightly less support to the stock. All in all, however, this is an unquestionably solid purchase. And, as with any portable planer, really, a couple of roller stands will make a big difference in the shop. --Justin Paul ... Delta 31-695 6" Belt/9" Disc Sander by Delta Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $403.22 -- our price: $269.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Durably constructed with a fully enclosed 1-horsepower induction motor and a die-cast aluminum base to dampen vibration, Delta's combination belt/disc sanding station is designed to make removing both small and large amounts of material a quick and easy operation. To round corners and smooth over large curves, the 9-inch disc sander spins quietly at 2,800 rpm. Its cohort, the versatile 48-by-6-inch belt, cycles 2,200 square feet per minute over a heat-reducing graphite pad that helps increase belt life. In tests, we found it quickly adjusted from horizontal to vertical and locked easily into position for use on 180-degree curves and cutouts. The tool-free tracking knob makes it easy tomaintain belt alignment, and the cast-aluminum worktable bevels 45 degrees to accommodate angles on either surface. We found changing sandpaper on both tools relatively easy, and appreciated the integral 2-1/4-inch port for dust collection. The included steel stand is sturdy and features nonslip pads to help keep it in place. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (12)
On page 10 of the manual, it says the screw for changing the position of the sanding arm can be adjusted with the supplied hex wrench, but I found that the screw was the wrong size. I called Delta and they sent the correct part (part #1346365). I also ran into the problem mentioned by another reviewer where the parts for the stand are labelled differently from picture to picture. Too bad I didn't read that review before I assembled the unit. It would have saved me a lot of time. All-in-all it seems like it will function well, but it's not as perfect as I'd hoped it would be.

Delta 31-780X Boss Bench Oscillating Spindle Sander by Delta Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Delta Boss, like all spindle sanders, is designed specifically for sanding curved and scrolled material. The large 18-inch cast-iron worktable proved steady support for all of our test material, and this Delta has an especially versatile 1/2-inch spindle that accommodates sanding drums from the 3/4-inch standard all the way up to 3 inches in diameter. A unique feature of this Delta sander is the oscillating spindle that moves at 60 strokes per minute to help remove material quickly and with less heat buildup. Predrilled holes allow quick mounting to benchtops and, at only 45 pounds, the machine is fully portable. Like most Delta shop tools, this sander features an integral dust-collection fan and bag. We especially appreciate Delta's removable on/off switch that protects children and the unwary from accidentally starting the machine. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (16)
One of Delta's better efforts!
The dust collection system works okay. The dust port is an odd size, 1.5", but the dust collection fan blades built into the base of the spindle draws the dust down from the table into the bag.The bag is a little tricky to install, but once it is installed, it works great. The only negative I have, and thus only 4 stars, is the fact there is not a spindle lock. This makes changing the spindles not as easy as it should be.I have created my own "spindle lock" by placing the allen wrench in between the dust collection fan blades and the dust port, this "locks" the spindle in place while I change out the spindle sleeves.I'm sure this is not good for the fan blades, but it works, so far. A great running machine, has met all my expectations and then some for edge sanding curved pieces. It has a permanent place on my work bench !! ... Read more Asin: B00002236Z |

DEWALT DW788S 20" Variable Speed Scroll Saw with Stand and Light by DeWalt Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $968.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Porter-Cable CFBN125ABrad Nailer/Compressor Combo Pack by Porter-Cable Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $463.00 -- our price: $209.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This Porter-Cable brad nailer and compressor kit is a smart starter set that will have you up and running in just a few minutes. The kit includes an 18-gauge brad nailer; a 2-horsepower, 6-gallon, oil-free pancake compressor; 25 feet of 300 psi air hose; male and female couplers; Teflon tape; oil for the nailer; and 1,000 brad nails. The brad nailer is a compact, no-nonsense unit that might not be as stout as other (more expensive) nailers, but it's reliable and does its job well. It shoots standard brads from 5/8 to 1-1/4 inches long, and includes a sequential fire trigger, a safety that's located behind the driver guide for driving brads in tight spaces, easy-to-use depth adjustment, a directional exhaust port, a removable rubber nose, and a rugged plastic carrying case. The compressor is easy to transport, but still offers plenty of capacity. It produces 135 psi and has a 6-gallon capacity, enough to support heavy use of brad and finish nailers or moderate use of framing nailers. This is an oil-free unit, and its advanced Teflon coating doesn't require maintenance--a big plus on the convenience scale. The compressor's 120-volt universal motor starts easily in cold weather and draws only 10 amps--so you won't have to worry about tripping breakers inside residential homes--and you can use it with an extension cord. It also includes a high-flow regulator and an easy-to-read air pressure gauge. Overall, this combination kit offers two solid pieces of equipment at a very competitive price. It's a great way to get into air-powered tools. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more Features Reviews (27)

Delta 50-850 115 Volt, 1-1/2 Horsepower, 1200 CFM Dust Collector by Delta Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $395.00 -- our price: $269.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Remember that annoying workplace slogan, "Your parents don't work here--clean up after yourself"? Well, with the Delta 1,200 cfm dust collector, you've got a powerful, well-built machine to keep the shop clean. Built with a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for long life and curved steel impellers for durability, this dust collector whisks away debris from tools' dust ports with surprising force, so the only thing collecting particles around the shop might be your old broom resting in the closet. Set on a sturdy caster base for easy mobility, the dust collector stands 88 inches tall and has two intake ports for collecting simultaneously from multiple machines. The large 6-cubic-foot bags will reduce your trips to the trash and filter the air of particles down to 30 microns. For cleaner air, you can always upgrade to 5- or 1-micron bags. This is a great tool for any midsize woodworking shop. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (39)
Soon after, I discovered that crash caused the fin blade to go out of balance. Now it is burning through start capacitors within hours. It is so bad that I am giving up on it and buying another vacuum. I would get another 50-850, because it is a good product for the money. But of course, I'm not happy with the motor and the vulnerable, delicate design. Long-term durability is clearly this product's weakness. And, I'm dissatified with the flimsy structure, which makes the unit hard to move around. I like my Delta tools but I don't love them. ... Read more Asin: B0000223BE |

Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4-Horsepower Variable-Speed Router by Bosch Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware -- our price: $151.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB is one member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... Freud JS102Biscuit Joiner System with Tilting Fence and Dust Bag by Freud Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $233.15 -- our price: $119.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Freud's biscuit joiner is a solid tool that costs remarkably less than its competitors' models. The all-metal construction of this compact joiner gives it a high-quality, very balanced feel. The carbide-tipped blade cuts the three standard 0, 10, and 20 biscuit sizes--plus A, B, and max. You can switch easily between the six settings with a convenient thumb wheel. The joiner also gives you the choice of using a dust bag or hooking it up to a vacuum for even simpler cleanup. The joiner features a new variable-angle fence system for adjustments from 0 to 90 degrees. Making fence adjustments, admittedly, isn't as easy as it is on DeWalt's or Porter-Cable's more expensive models--but this was the only notable difference we could find with Freud's joiner. (It's also not much of a concern for the casual woodworker or for anyone who uses a biscuit cutter primarily to make repetitive cuts.) All in all, this is a quality tool at a really attractive price. --Jon Groebner ... Read more Features Reviews (11)
