5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Fine Machine
Moved up from [$$$]Craftsman table saw.The old saw was a toy compared to this machine. This thing is a real solid machine...I hope I'm worthy of its abilities.Found the instructions to be very good, except the separate instructions on the extension table and fence as they were dreadful. Also, when you transition from the main instructions to the fence/extension table instructions it is difficult to follow and determine when and where to return in the instruction sequence.

I suggest you buy the mobile base when you purchase it.I don't plan to move mine much, but I wouldn't want to have to movethis thing an inch without one.It seems like it would be easiest to assemble right on the stand like I did.

Now that is together, it is a powerhouse!!!I look forward to using it for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Table Saw Overall
Using the standard Fed-X option, I received my saw quickly and with no apparent box damage on December 3, delivered right inside the new shop. I had the stand together, the cast tops on, and the saw up and running sooner that I had expected, in about 2 hrs. Then, I fought the fence for a while. The lack of clear fence assembly instructions, with no fence diagrams, caused me unnecessary delay. Finally I called Jet, and found out with their great tech support, that I was shipped the right rails & guide, but the wrong fence. I also had a broken plastic sight glass (plastic) on the fence, and no end caps for the guide. The new fence would not line up properly within the sight glass margin of correction, so Jet sent me a new tape to overlay on the guide correcting the problem. All of this was eventually received with a few mistakes on Jet's part, but it did take a month to get it all straight. The saw blade insert's opening is too large (it does works with my wobble dado blade ok), and the blade shipped with the saw is useful only for perhaps ripping.
Overall, the saw's fit and finish is good, and it runs great in the 110v or the 240v mode. I do like it better than my 10 yr. old contractor's saw I sold. However, in hindsight, I would now order the same saw, but without the Exacta fence option. I prefer another brand of fence I had before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding saw, Fence needs work
It took me 6 hours to assemble the entire saw but half of that time was spent on the fence alone. The quality of the saw and stand are outstanding -- fit of components, quality of casting and machining, ease of assembly, quality in operation... all near perfect.

The fence, though, needs help.My front support rail was badly warped and the rail sight (small plastic marker for setting measurements) was cracked, misprinted (not parallel to marks on rule), and simply didn't fit on the rail. The instructions are not very good and there was no list of included hardware so I could identify the various pieces.Alignment of this fence to the saw was a real pain in the neck.It should be noted that the Exacta fence is not manufactured by Jet but *for* them.

Once assembled with replacement parts (good customer service), the fence works wonderfully.Measurements are right on the money, first try.The fence is extremely rigid and moves very smoothly.

I gave the saw 5 stars because assembly is a one-time chore and the real measure is day-to-day useability. This saw is a great value, particularly since I only paid (price).I would buy it again in a heartbeat. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If your projects require you to drill with big bits or if you find yourself attempting to drill with precision under questionable circumstances, this heavy-duty 16-1/2-inch drill press from Delta will help you get out of your, um, hole. Running off a 3/4-horsepower motor that can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts, it gives you an impressive deep plunge length of 4-7/8 inches and holds up to 5/8-inch-diameter bits. Solid cast-iron construction and a 3-1/8-inch column give it the industrial feel and durability we look for in this type of tool. You'll enjoy the rotating work base--which bevels, of course, 45 degrees each way for drilling angles--as well as the depth stop that can be set quickly and easily with microadjustments and a locking mechanism, great for repetitive drilling. While other models sometimes place hard-to-read speed and belt charts under the top cap, Delta uses a wide, clearly legible chart to explain how to configure the belts for each of 16 speeds (215 to 2,720 rpm). And, thanks to the smooth, cool-running induction motor inside, you're not likely to find yourself shopping for a drill press again for an extremely long time. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine
I recently purchased the Delta 17-965 based on comments and several reviews in magazines. I must say I'm very pleased. This machine runs smooth and fairly quietly. It appears well made with a fine fit and finish. The measured runout, to the best of my abilities, appears to be about .002" on the chucked drill bit's shaft. I found it on sale in the tool crib catalog cheaper than the JET, with which I bought a magnetic base lamp. This drill press will probably outlive me. Its always nice knowing you'll never have to replace a peice of equipment again.

    I highly recommend this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool
I've used this tool a lot since purchasing it last Nov. I've had no problem with it. Be sure and have help in lifting the head up onto the column, strong and tall help is best. My only complaint is the plastic belt cover tends to vibrate. If the resulting hum could be eliminated, it would be a very quiet machine. It's not real loud, just an annoyance which I should be able to fix in some way. Nicely finished and easily adjusted. The depth stop is a great improvement over what has been the "norm" in the past. Quick, tool less adjustment which stays put.

5-0 out of 5 stars Think Twice Before Buying
I ordered the Delta 17-965 from Amazon which was suppose to come with a mail in offer for a mortising kit. Imagine my surprise when I did not receive the paperwork for the mail in offer and I learned from Amazon that the offer was a misprint which they would not honor. To make matter worse they want to charge me return shipping which is almost $400! Think twice and buy locally. ... Read more

Makita LS1013 Dual Slide Compound 10" Miter Saw Kit
    by Makita
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware (25 February, 2003)
    list price: $1,085.00 -- our price: $449.34
(price subject to change: see help)

    Editorial Review

Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle.

The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material--a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. The saw's table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider crosscuts. The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electric brake, however; they're user-friendly features that make a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also has a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw also gives you the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
FYI, I sawed my left hand off with this thing and am currently bringing an action against Makita for the recovery of my hand - so keep that in mind when purchasing this saw.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Makita ??
I have owned this tool for 3 years. I finally give up. After having to re-adjust the tool to square almost daily, after using an angle, I can't justify the wasted time and screwed up project pieces any longer. I ordered a Hitachi.

2-0 out of 5 stars switch to another
This has been, plainly put, the least reliable power tool I've owned. It was okay for the first year or so when I used it to install crown molding and cabinet trim during a kitchen remodel. However, one day it started running intermittently, cutting out and then powering up again, and then it just quit.I went to the local authorized Makita repair shop, bought a switch, and installed it myself (not a tough job). That switch worked for awhile, then it quit as well.I let the saw sit while I bought a third switch, but before installing that switch, I tried the second switch again. It worked. It continued to work for a couple of months, then the saw quit altogether, this time during a fencing job.I ended up doing all cuts freehand with a Skilsaw Mag 77 (now there's a good tool!).

I installed the third switch in the Makita, and it didn't work at all.I'm about to give up.

I asked the guy at the shop if this type of problem is common. He retorted with, "Why do you think I have so many switches in stock?"Really, the saw is accurate and ergonomic. It's also frustratingly temperamental, and no one has time for this kind of problem.Time to get rid of it and get a DeWalt or a Ridgid. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for...
Used this saw for 3 years or so for light jobs, although I've resawn with it a few times.Does a good job for the $$ on light jobs -- I know it's not meant for resawing, so my expectations reflect that knowledge and I'm ok with the way it performs.I'm intending to do much more resawing in the future and am upgrading to an 18 inch, 2 hp, 220v saw but will still use this little guy for quickie cuts from time to time.My 4-star review is based on modest expectations of the tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars No parts?
We purchased this saw 6 months ago. The little plastic gear that allows adjustment for the blade gaurd broke. We continue to receive bad news concerning the availibility of this part. Back order, after back order. Why? We need this saw. It was our fault for the breakage, I just cant believe its not available. We have ordered the gear through GRAINGER Industrial supply here in Wichita Kansas.
    Thanks

I ordered this product and while not to Amazons fault the product came defected.A leg on the base was broke off. I called Delta ( from the card in the package) and asked ifthey could ship a new piece, it was easy to replace. It cost a total of [price].To my amazement they would not, I had to go through UPS, who shipped it, etc etc. After a week, I said the heck with it and filled out a return/replacement order and Amazon was great. The old has been picked up and a new one on t he way.So what would have cost [price], cost who knows how much.I guess I dont understand business.I guess I dont understand DELTA.Sears always stands by their products, why doesnt Delta? ... JET 708457GK / JJ-CSX 6" Woodworking Jointer includes Two Extra Sets of Knives FREE a $99.98 Value
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $679.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

When it comes to jointers, there aren't a lot of differences among the leaders in the market. Like other manufacturers, Jet uses heavy-duty cast iron in the fence, jointer base, and infeed/outfeed tables and offers a three-blade drum and built-in 4-inch dust port. Their design, however, features a couple of innovations that changed our "jointers are jointers" mindset. While the infeed tables in other models can only be raised or lowered with a rod or lever system, this machine's design allows you to adjust both of the feed tables by rotating smooth, industrial-style hand wheels. This feature lends itself to easier tapers and gives you more control when you need to take off precise measurements, like 1/64 of an inch, a setting that can frustrate woodworkers lifting the arms up or down on other machines. The fence glides extremely smoothly throughout its range of motion and tilts both ways, but, where other brands offer fixed stops only at 45 and 90 degrees, Jet's jointer adjusts to quickly reproduce multiple cuts at any angle you find necessary. Driven by a 4,850 rpm, 1-horsepower induction motor completely encased in a welded steel stand, this jointer comes prewired for 115-volt outlets and can be converted to run off 230-volt sources. As a final touch, Jet designed the industrial start switch with holes behind the button for locking with a readily available Master Lock to keep coworkers or family members safe from accidental injury. --Justin Paul ... Delta 22-560K 12-1/2" Portable Planer with Extra Knives and a Dust Chute--a $44.99 Value
    by Delta
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $349.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

When shopping for a portable planer, we recommend keeping two things in mind: performance and, to a lesser degree, transportability. Delta's 12-1/2-inch planer weighs only 65 pounds and packs small, so it doesn't break your back when you pick it up and takes up minimal space in a loaded truck. Performance is the real issue, however, and Delta's planer--constructed with a sturdy four-post design and a 15 amp, 120-volt motor--smoothes materials up to 12-1/2 inches wide and 6 inches thick to stain-ready quality. The unique threaded cutterhead lock quickly cranks tight (some competitors' models will loosen up over time), delivering impressive snipe control. Delta's planer has a feed rate of 26 feet per minute and can shave off up to 1/8 of an inch. But we are most impressed, frankly, by how easy it is to change blades. What used to be a major operation took us maybe four minutes. The double-edged blades remove easily, fit over machined posts, and automatically align. The process utilizes a little magnetic blade-removing tool that does require some finesse, but we caught on fast. The infeed and outfeed tables adjust, but they are noticeably shorter than DeWalt's--which means the Delta planer is more compact but offers slightly less support to the stock. All in all, however, this is an unquestionably solid purchase. And, as with any portable planer, really, a couple of roller stands will make a big difference in the shop. --Justin Paul ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Durably constructed with a fully enclosed 1-horsepower induction motor and a die-cast aluminum base to dampen vibration, Delta's combination belt/disc sanding station is designed to make removing both small and large amounts of material a quick and easy operation. To round corners and smooth over large curves, the 9-inch disc sander spins quietly at 2,800 rpm. Its cohort, the versatile 48-by-6-inch belt, cycles 2,200 square feet per minute over a heat-reducing graphite pad that helps increase belt life. In tests, we found it quickly adjusted from horizontal to vertical and locked easily into position for use on 180-degree curves and cutouts. The tool-free tracking knob makes it easy tomaintain belt alignment, and the cast-aluminum worktable bevels 45 degrees to accommodate angles on either surface. We found changing sandpaper on both tools relatively easy, and appreciated the integral 2-1/4-inch port for dust collection. The included steel stand is sturdy and features nonslip pads to help keep it in place. --Justin Paul ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Sander
The Purchase/Shipping:Amazon made this easy and efficient. The price was discounted from retail and they offered a shipping incentive. The sander was shipped immediately and I received it within a few days.It was carefully packaged.

Assembly:Fairly simple. The parts list on the first page of the manual incorrectly describes stand parts, so look carefully at the pictures in the manual, and follow the instructions. The sander itself is partially assembled and simple to complete.

Quality:The attachments are acceptable, but some of the plastic parts are not well molded and don't fit snugly. This is not a particularly big deal, because the plastic parts aren't under stress. The stand is adequate. The rest of the machine is well-made.One caveat: there is a fairly large gap between the pressure plate and the rollers, and this allows the sanding belt to bow, which can cause ripples on the surface you are sanding.Practice with old 2x4's or other scrap to get a feel for the machine. Also, the sander I received came with one incorrectly-sized metric bolt, which held up the assembly until I found the correct bolt at a local hardware store.

Function: A powerful machine. It comes with an 80 grit belt and disk, and it's a good idea to pick up some finer-grit belts/disks.The sander cuts fast, puts out a lot of wood dust, and is loud.If you use it in a closed area, hearing protectors are recommended for work that takes more than a moment to complete.

Summary:Overall a good performer. The attachments, manual and stand are only adequate, but once you turn on the sander, you're too busy to worry about its details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as I'd hoped
I always had a picture in my mind of Delta tools being the ones to buy if you could afford them. As my first Delta tool purchase this one just didn't live up to my internal hype.

On page 10 of the manual, it says the screw for changing the position of the sanding arm can be adjusted with the supplied hex wrench, but I found that the screw was the wrong size. I called Delta and they sent the correct part (part #1346365).

I also ran into the problem mentioned by another reviewer where the parts for the stand are labelled differently from picture to picture. Too bad I didn't read that review before I assembled the unit. It would have saved me a lot of time.

All-in-all it seems like it will function well, but it's not as perfect as I'd hoped it would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars great woodworking tool

    Editorial Review

The Delta Boss, like all spindle sanders, is designed specifically for sanding curved and scrolled material. The large 18-inch cast-iron worktable proved steady support for all of our test material, and this Delta has an especially versatile 1/2-inch spindle that accommodates sanding drums from the 3/4-inch standard all the way up to 3 inches in diameter. A unique feature of this Delta sander is the oscillating spindle that moves at 60 strokes per minute to help remove material quickly and with less heat buildup. Predrilled holes allow quick mounting to benchtops and, at only 45 pounds, the machine is fully portable. Like most Delta shop tools, this sander features an integral dust-collection fan and bag. We especially appreciate Delta's removable on/off switch that protects children and the unwary from accidentally starting the machine. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the Buck
I bought the BOSS after the price dropped and I have been extremely happy with it's versatility. You get a [...] Spindle kit free to get started and the different sizes of spindles are readily available almost everywhere (unlike my Jet power tools). The vibration is a lot less than I expected making it very easy to shape wood rough cut shapes from my scroll saw and my table saw.

    One of Delta's better efforts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sander works well and extra spindle set great value.
Sander works great but, dust bag is hard to get on and off. The extra spindle set you get is all the sizes they make for sander that is not included with standard sander. Extra set comes with drums and one sanding drum per rubber drum. Great value because, at a national hardware store they will charge you [alot] for just the sander plus ... extra spindle set which is encluded at amazon for nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smooth Operator
The Boss Bench Oscillating Sander is a smooth, quiet operation, with hardly, if any, vibration. The cast iron table provides an adequate work surface and great support and stability of the workpiece.I did not have any trouble with the spindle being square to the table. This sander works wonders on the curved and scrollsawed pieces, with no burning of the edges, and a smooth finish.

The dust collection system works okay. The dust port is an odd size, 1.5", but the dust collection fan blades built into the base of the spindle draws the dust down from the table into the bag.The bag is a little tricky to install, but once it is installed, it works great.

The only negative I have, and thus only 4 stars, is the fact there is not a spindle lock. This makes changing the spindles not as easy as it should be.I have created my own "spindle lock" by placing the allen wrench in between the dust collection fan blades and the dust port, this "locks" the spindle in place while I change out the spindle sleeves.I'm sure this is not good for the fan blades, but it works, so far.

A great running machine, has met all my expectations and then some for edge sanding curved pieces. It has a permanent place on my work bench !! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Getting repaired a hassle "low quality now made in Tawian"
It had it for 5 weeks before it just quit completely. I brought to the local Dewalt repair center per Dewalts service center recommendation. After waiting 2 weeks for it to be repaired, I called them and they said they had to send it off to the factory and it would be another week. After another week they said it would be another week so I called Dewalt to ask how long it should take and they said it was between me and the service center. I asked if they would call and find out what was going on and they said no. I asked what a resonable time frame for repair was and they said 2 to 3 weeks but it was up to the service center if they would issue a new one to me. I got the number to the factory and they said another week. I notice on the box it says made in Tawian and not Canada, so I am guessing even if I don't get it for another few weeks I mightg as well wait since they will all have problems because of low production quality in Tawian. Every tool I have ever bought from them in the last two years except my router has quit working, I think I will quit buying thier products. ... Read more

This Porter-Cable brad nailer and compressor kit is a smart starter set that will have you up and running in just a few minutes. The kit includes an 18-gauge brad nailer; a 2-horsepower, 6-gallon, oil-free pancake compressor; 25 feet of 300 psi air hose; male and female couplers; Teflon tape; oil for the nailer; and 1,000 brad nails. The brad nailer is a compact, no-nonsense unit that might not be as stout as other (more expensive) nailers, but it's reliable and does its job well. It shoots standard brads from 5/8 to 1-1/4 inches long, and includes a sequential fire trigger, a safety that's located behind the driver guide for driving brads in tight spaces, easy-to-use depth adjustment, a directional exhaust port, a removable rubber nose, and a rugged plastic carrying case. The compressor is easy to transport, but still offers plenty of capacity. It produces 135 psi and has a 6-gallon capacity, enough to support heavy use of brad and finish nailers or moderate use of framing nailers. This is an oil-free unit, and its advanced Teflon coating doesn't require maintenance--a big plus on the convenience scale. The compressor's 120-volt universal motor starts easily in cold weather and draws only 10 amps--so you won't have to worry about tripping breakers inside residential homes--and you can use it with an extension cord. It also includes a high-flow regulator and an easy-to-read air pressure gauge. Overall, this combination kit offers two solid pieces of equipment at a very competitive price. Remember that annoying workplace slogan, "Your parents don't work here--clean up after yourself"? Well, with the Delta 1,200 cfm dust collector, you've got a powerful, well-built machine to keep the shop clean. Built with a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for long life and curved steel impellers for durability, this dust collector whisks away debris from tools' dust ports with surprising force, so the only thing collecting particles around the shop might be your old broom resting in the closet. Set on a sturdy caster base for easy mobility, the dust collector stands 88 inches tall and has two intake ports for collecting simultaneously from multiple machines. The large 6-cubic-foot bags will reduce your trips to the trash and filter the air of particles down to 30 microns. For cleaner air, you can always upgrade to 5- or 1-micron bags. 3-0 out of 5 stars Just can't see 5 Stars for this thing...
I see most reviewers are very happy with their DC and rate it high... Having owned and used other collectors I find this unit acceptable. Powerful as it may be it does run LOUD.. Don't care what others think... the unit is LOUD..Yes you can talk over it but running a saw the same time is more noise then I expected.... Delta fit and finish is so...so...ie., spot welds rather then full weld.. crappy upper bag hanger, crappy lower bag stand supports... besides that, Delta provides a "grab-bag" of nuts and bolts... You end up short with the nuts and end up extra on the washers and bolts?!My unit is attached to 4" PVC manifold and really works good... but just a little better then my JET 650 CFM did... My wife likes it alot and if she's happy, I'm happy... All and all for the price of the unit I don't think you can do better and Delta is a good company that stands behind their oversea's made products..If it were prefect in EVERY respect then I would give it 5 full stars but it isn't...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for the price
Finally received my Dust Collector, and it was worth all the wait.Really happy that the unit now comes standard with the 1 micron bags.I do plan on upgrading to the 1 micron bagswhen the 5 wears out. Some have mentioned that the dual 1 micron bags allow the machine to breath a little better too. This DC has plenty of power. So far I've used it with my tablesaw, bandsaw and router station with much sucess. This machine is a solid buy, Enjoy your cleaner shop!

3-0 out of 5 stars It was wonderful while it worked
This is a powerful vacuum. I bought mine 2 years ago. Unfortunately, about a month ago, the vacuum sucked in some small oak blocks from the table saw. The oak blocks, about 3/4" square by 3 inches long, slammed against the fins inside, dented the cover and slightly bent the fin wheel. I heard a loud clang and that was all, the unit kept working.

Soon after, I discovered that crash caused the fin blade to go out of balance. Now it is burning through start capacitors within hours. It is so bad that I am giving up on it and buying another vacuum.

I would get another 50-850, because it is a good product for the money. But of course, I'm not happy with the motor and the vulnerable, delicate design. Long-term durability is clearly this product's weakness. And, I'm dissatified with the flimsy structure, which makes the unit hard to move around.

I like my Delta tools but I don't love them. ... Read more

    Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4-Horsepower Variable-Speed Router

    Editorial Review

Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB is one member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it.

Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Router But It Has ON/OFF Switch Problems
I have owned this router for 1 year now and for the most part I like it. However I have been having a problem with the ON/OFF switch. I was just about to take it to BOSCH Service when I decided to read some wood forums on the product. It appears that I am not the only one to have this problem. Several posts on different forums and even on this Amazon site, people are complaining of the ON/OFF switch failing or working intermittently. One reviewer said that you can gently remove the switch and clean it, which I did, this corrected the problem but it appears that the switch is prone to this dust problem. Other then the switch problem that can be frustrating especially when you're in the middle of using it, the router performs well. The variable speed and soft start are very nice. If Bosch fixes the switch problem this is easy a 5 star product.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good router but...
Everyone raves about the Bosch 1617EVS router, primarily
because it has a good depth adjustment mechanism. However, as a
previous reviewer pointed out, the On/Off switch is flakey.
Mine died for the first time very quickly after I started using
the router. I had to bring it to a repair place and let it sit
for a month while the switch was on order. It just died again.
I suppose it is best to get two routers, so you have one to use
while the other is in the shop.

1-0 out of 5 stars Undelivered Promises
The Bosch 1617EVS is an attractive router package; however, Amazon is unable to deliver on it! Don't believe the "ships in 24 hours" claim. I've ordered the item on December 31st and since then I've been receiving "delay in shipment" notices. The one I received today promises me that I will not see the ordered router until the March time frame. Should I wait, they ask? Unfortunately, along with the router I've ordered several accessories. All of the accessories have arrived, but not the router. Do I wait? Do I cancel and return the accessories? Do I postpone the projects for which I've scheduled the router based on Amazon's false delivery date promise? What would you do? Go to Home Depot and buy a router that you can feel and touch and take home with you?

I've been shopping with Amazon for many years and this is the first major let down on their part. Has Amazon outgrown its commitment to its customer base? ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Freud's biscuit joiner is a solid tool that costs remarkably less than its competitors' models. The all-metal construction of this compact joiner gives it a high-quality, very balanced feel. The carbide-tipped blade cuts the three standard 0, 10, and 20 biscuit sizes--plus A, B, and max. You can switch easily between the six settings with a convenient thumb wheel. The joiner also gives you the choice of using a dust bag or hooking it up to a vacuum for even simpler cleanup. The joiner features a new variable-angle fence system for adjustments from 0 to 90 degrees. Making fence adjustments, admittedly, isn't as easy as it is on DeWalt's or Porter-Cable's more expensive models--but this was the only notable difference we could find with Freud's joiner. (It's also not much of a concern for the casual woodworker or for anyone who uses a biscuit cutter primarily to make repetitive cuts.) All in all, this is a quality tool at a really attractive price. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Value!!
I must have a different machine from the other reviewers or maybe I need less hand holding. The one I have is easy to set and accurate. In fact, it seem to be identical to the Lamello in design. The fence can be set crooked if you try but turning the handle to lock it pulls it in to parallel. For dust collection a shop vac is best but the bag does a fair job. I highly recommend this tool for those that want a machine like Lamello's without spending $400.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freud Lays an Egg
The fence on this joiner is flimsy and allows for inaccurate slots. Should only be use for the very roughest work. Try another brand, very disappointing after the fine 15 amp router I bought from Freud worked out so well. They do make great blades and bits however.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably poor design
I bought the Freud JS102 because I thought it was one of the better brands out but, not any more. The other reviews you read here are accurate.
First, THEY DID SCREW UP THE measuring devices on the face plate that is supposed to ensure a level cut!Because of this, it is almost impossible to achieve a level cut! This seams very consistent with other reviews and I noticed the same thing. This is likely a manufaturing problem as many of the joiners have this same problem.
Secondly, I found adjusting the depth of the biscut cut very very difficult.Freud says it "pre-sets" the biscut depth at the factory.Well, it was not and my #20 biscut cuts were too shallow. In an attempt to correct this problem, I followed Freud's directions to manually change the depth. This was almost impossible. The "little wrench" they give you to make needed adjustments is too big!!!If I had not had my own tools to fix the problem, the depth could never have been changed!
Finally, the manual is awful. The pictures are of horrible quality and many points one would think of as important are not included in the manual.
Oh, one more thing, I don't know what amp motor I have! The box and tool both say it is a 6.5 amp motor but EVERY WEB SITE and even FREUD themselves say the motor is 5 AMPS!
Needless to say, the product made its way back to the store and I spent $50 more and got the Porter Cable. ... Read more
