5-0 out of 5 stars Best square - no ka oi
This is THE combo square. Don't bother with Empire or any other brand. Spend the money for this square. I've owned and used many other squares to make doors. The Starrett square excels for several reasons:

    * The square is tight - no slop at all
    * The knurled knob turns smoothly and holds the blade tightly - no reason to crank down on the knob to hold the blade in place
    * Markings on the blade are easy to read and set. There are 4 sets of measurements on the blade - 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64 - so you can pick the right accuracy for the current job.
    * The square feels good in your hand and if you work with tools a lot you know what I mean. There is real joy in holding and using a well made tool and this Starrett combo square is a well made tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For
Most people's first response when they ask how much this set me back is shock.Usually followed by pointiong out that theirs only cost one third that much and had all these extra gadgets. If it's the right day in the shop I point to a work in process and ask them to find one place where it is the least bit out of true. And by 'least bit' I mean not at all. This usually settles the argument right away. When legs are square and cut right tables don't wobble. When cases are square drawers fit perfectly, etc, etc.

If all you do is cut moulding and flooring than you don't need this kind of square. But if tiny little gaps and adjustments frustrate your sense of perfection, then take a look at products like this square or its brothers and sisters.Starret makes heirloom quality tools that will remain every bit as accurate until the solar system goes defunct.

I have two Starrett squares - the six inch, which generally rides in my pocket or is busy marking off boxes, and the 12 inch, which I use in making full size furniture. There is also an 18" rule and I am severely tempted to have that around as well.

I have the extra gadgets (protractor and center) for the 12" and all I can say is that they form the standard for all the tuning in my shop, and they never fail.Yes, they are expensive but at both ends of the supply chain for these tools are people who are very proud of their work.

I only wish I could figure out how to get Starrett to send me free samples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Might as well get both now
I just received the Starrett 6" and immediately ordered the 12. First I tried to rejuvenate an old one that belonged to my father. After a half hour of scrubbing, de-rusting, and fine polishing, I thought I had a twelve. I checked the depth accuracy, and it was right on. Then I checked it as a square. Although the end to end was correct, the center of the ruler had been accidentally ground. So if I tried to square up a 4" high table saw blade for example, it would be off. That was all I needed. I went to the computer and ordered the 12 as well. You can't afford to screw around with the device that all other tools are measured by. A cut only off 1 degree creates a 91-degree edge. When gluing and clamping that edge, it bows or skews your project. Then when you try to mate that up to a square project, it doesn't fit. Save yourself a lot of heartache, time, and money, get a starrett combination square.
I have the Bosch digital protractor, and that measures in tenths of a degree. The problem is that it is about 18 inches long, and does not measure depths.
These combination squares are great for taking a measurement in a difficult to get to area. You simply drop it into the area, slide the ruler out until it stops, then lock it into the base with the knob, then bring the square out, and check your measurement. No more having to dive your head under something, while you contort your body to be able to see the measurement.
Pertaining to the 6 or 12, I chose the 6 first because I saw that one being used in higher end woodworking books. Authors even photographed themselves using the starret setting up the table saw blade for example. When I got it my first impression was, boy is that tiny. It probably will be the one that I use the most. I just don't want to be limited when I need to use one on lengths greater than 6 inches.
It is well made, and yes it does spec out properly. I used Incra measuring instruments to check the rule, and the Bosch digital protractor to check to see if it was dead on 90. It wasn't off by even a tenth of a degree.
It's funny how you have to rave about a tool that does what it is supposed to do, and do it well. Their is so much junk out there. Did you ever check your level, but putting it on a surface, then turn it around end to end to see if the bubble shows the same reading on the same surface. You will be shocked; 80 percent of them are off. Even the bubble on this Starrett tool is dead on.
The square ness is right on. The typical check of taping a piece of paper to a flat surface in front of a fence, then use the square to draw a line, flip the tail of the square over to the other side, and see if the line is dead on.
If you have a square that has a handle that was riveted, welded, or glued on, chances are it is off. The single stamped pieces of metal are usually accurate.
These Starrett combination squares are something that you will grow to use more and more often. Soon you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Starrett instruments for years have had a well deserved reputation for quality. With that in mind, I ordered their 120A-6 caliper.Upon receiving it, I immediately noticed the dial was zeroed incorrectly in the 9 o'clock position.Either this caliper was damaged in transit to me, or it was assembled incorrectly.

I contacted Amazon regarding this and the service offered for replacement was fast and courteous. When my new replacement Starrett caliper arrived, I discovered it also had the dial set incorrectly at the 9 o'clock position. This led me to believe that both of the calipers had been assembled incorrectly at the factory.

My next step was to contact Starrett regarding this. They offered to adjust/repair my caliper, all the time still touting their quality and 100% inspection policy on everything leaving their factory, but as I packaged it up to ship to them, I reflected on not just the assembly of this product, but the fact that parts of it (the dial housing) were of inexpensive plastic, as noted by other reviewers. In my opinion, this is definitely not in keeping with a set of ... calipers.

I wound up shipping the Starrett back to Amazon for a refund.I wish Amazon would offer another brand of high end calipers for sale as I found the Starrett to be disappointing, especially so when considering Starrett is the only American made brand available.

4-0 out of 5 stars I also feel that plastic has no place on a caliper
I practically grew up in a machine shop with a father that would only buy top quality tools. While I feel that Starret is still a top quality tool I would have to agree with the previous reviewer about the bad decission to change to the plastic dial. That one little detail knocked this tool down from 5 stars to 4 stars. I would have been happy to pay the extra 10 bucks for a metal dial housing. While this may sound silly but this little detail would have cost them a sale if I compaired it side by side with Brown&Sharpe and Mitutoyo and either one had a metal dial housing. Also what happened to quality cases? When I think back to my dads tool boxes (20 yrs ago) all the tools seemed to have wooden finger joined boxes now you get plastic boxes ( not even plastic that is well designed). Finally I would like to say all things being considered this is a very good tool and I would recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Heirloom "needs a bit of qualifying!
One of the reviewers referred to this caliper as being "heirloom quality".I feel that statement needs a bit of qualifying.

Starrett has recently (within the past couple of years) made some changes to this caliper.I'll let you be the judge as to whether it was a good move.I should preface this by saying that I own several Starrett tools and have plans to add more to my chest (my wallet permitting).

The first change that I'll speak to is with the dial housing. It has gone from being made from metal to plastic.I spoke w/a tech rep at Starrett who told me that It was a cost cutting measure as well as an attempt to make all the dials in their product line universal. He also said that he has fielded several customer complaints regarding this change.I have both versions of this caliper and the one with the plastic dial does not meet my expectations of "heirloom quality".It is a fine caliper but the plastic on this instrument detracts from the reputation for quality that Starrett has developed. However, the metal dial version of this tool, IMHO, embodies the qualities that Starrett is known for.I should also say that there is no functional difference, that I can find, between the two calipers.

The other refinements (of the plastic dial version) are merely asthetic. The jaws have a slightly different profile and the depth rod is slightly thicker.Nothing that would provide anything better functionally.

I hope that Starrett will return to producing calipers with a metal dial housing. If you can get your hands on one of these, then you will really have something that is "heirloom quality" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't have said it better
I was going to write a review of the Bessey cabinet clamps but I read what Alan Freedman said and I couldn't have said it better. So, to use Alan Freedman's comments (which I totally agree with)....

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THEM: These are best clamps for squaring up a cabinet side/face frame ever. They work great standing up on a workbench. I consider them an invaluable part of my woodworking shop.

THE OTHER STUFF: These are not the end all. I still use my jorgenson clamps a lot. They apply point pressure (versus even pressure across the face of the clamp) which can be useful for truing up some jobs and clamping some irregular surfaces. The Bessey clamps are pretty heavy which can be ackward when clamping with one hand (and using the other hand to hold the project together).

THE BOTTOM LINE: You can never have too many clamps. I would not have less than a pair of the Bessey clamps in my shop. Four are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars these are great clamps
My only complaint is the price, but you get your money's worth. I plan to pick up a few more of these sometime in the future. The faces give you square pressure against the stock, which I find really important for edge gluing and cabinet building. I keep a little pressure on the heads for storage. The one time I did not I rotated the clamp head vertically and the clamp body slid down pinching my hand on the way down.

My husband has been using his grandfather's pipe clamps for years. After doing extensive research, he finally decided to invest in some Bessey's.Needless to say, it's made his woodworking pasttime even more enjoyable. In fact, he liked these so well that he bought a second, identical set. These clamps are well worth the money! ... Porter-Cable 7518 3-1/4 HP Speedmatic 5-Speed Router

    Editorial Review

When it's time to step up to a bigger router, Porter-Cable's 7518 should be on your list of contenders. It has as powerful a motor as you can find on a router and a reputation for accuracy and dependability. It's designed to work with bits as large as 4 inches in diameter and has electronic soft start and five speeds, to ensure that you'll be able to use those giant panel cutters safely and smoothly. The large bit capacity also makes it a great poor man's shaper when mounted on a good router table. Like most of Porter-Cable's routers, this model features their autorelease collet system, which does a good job of eliminating the problem of frozen bits and the need for rapping on the collet to remove them. Of all the routers we've tried, Porter-Cable's are among those with the lowest vibration and cleanest cuts. One thing we wish Porter-Cable would improve on is the lack of a spindle lock, which means that two wrenches--and potential knuckle wracking--are involved in bit changes. But given that a router's real value is measured by the results it produces, we'd still recommend the 7518 as one of the best routers available and a great choice for any shop. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for table AND handheld routing
Don't be afraid to take this thing out of the table and use it in your bare hands!

This things works fabulously, both in the table and in my hands. For the table, it's a no brainer... this thing rocks and, being Porter-cable, you will NEVER have a hard time finding accessories. It is the standard.

About the hand-held use though:It's big, but the handles are great, makes getting a good grip on it super-easy.In fact, it's the most comfy fit to my hands that I've found (though I have not tried the Milwaukee 3.25hp router). Also, the weight, solidity, and power of the thing makes it such that it doesn't jump around and jerk like my lighter 1 3/4 HP Dewalt.Between its weight and power, it's actually a fantastic hand router, and cuts any wood (as a previous poster stated) "like butter".

I've used it for fairly delicate, precision work in tight areas as well and the really big stuff.Heck, The only time I've even made a bit chirp was when I was using a 2" long, 1/2" flush trim bit on the full thickness of solid 1.75" alder, and I was "trimming" just about the full diameter of the bit... that was just plain stupid of me.The router barely seemed to notice... the bit, however... well, it's resting in "piece(s)".

I would not necessarily want it as my only router in the shop.If it were my only one, I'd go with a 2 1/4 hybrid, because there are definitely times you do need something more manuverable for light trim work. But, if you have the option to buy two (or already have one) having a small packaged 1 3/4hp (or even PC's little 7/8"hp deal) partnered with this one, then you have a near unbeatable routing setup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for handheld work too
A lot of people have reviewed this router so I'll just add something new that I didn't see in other reviews. Many people are using this router primarily for router table work.I use it for handheld work too and find its considerable weight to be advantageous there, because it helps keep the router on top of the work. And it cuts like butter. Also the router's power seems to prevent the kind of sudden jumps that smaller motor routers are prone to.

5-0 out of 5 stars The industry standard
If you don't like horsepower and beefiness, than you may want to buy something else.On the other hand, if you want the toughest, most powerful router you can get, than this ones for you. This router was designed to be used in a router table with big bits. I have owned this router for 9 years. I make raised panel doors for a living. This tool has never failed me.I've been through three router tables, but only one router.Porter Cable could easily jack the price up on this router and it would have no problem selling. I own 7 routers. If I could only have one, it would be this one. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The DeWalt DW621 is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. It runs quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepowermotor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of8,000 to 24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. Ithas a safety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And thelist goes on. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621 as the bestis a matter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of arouter is going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage.--Carl Thress ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good if bought on clearance, bad if paid full price
Pluses - Has a good motor, spins almost like a dentist drill. Good plunge action. I like its size. Good speed control. Good dust collection.

Minus - Base is poorly designed and I can't use a straight edge with it. The casting of the base is rough and not straight and the base plate edge is not a good reference for the center. My Porter Cable 8529 base plate is better referenced. At least it lands on a 32 inch gradient on my strait edge. I will make a base plate to use in conjunction with a bushing so that I can use a staight edge for dados in plywood.

The bushing center is off by about .025" toward the right (fixed handle). It is at least centered between front and back.

I hate the plunge lock mechenism. I want the handle to act like a handle that I can grab without fear of unlocking the plunge lock and having the router pop up. This would be real bad if using a splining bit or a keyhole bit.

I like the position of the PC 8529 dust collector better. The dewault dust port extension gets in the way when inverting the router to change bushings, bits.

I like the PC 8529 height adjustment better. The Dewault has two height adjusters. The micro adjust knob on the Dewalt is for veneer work or tweeking once you've set the main height adjustment and made a test cut. Also, one turn of the micro adjust doesn't correspond to a convenient gradient like 1/8". The PC height adjustment is one continuous thread and each turn is 1/8". Although cumbersome turning the knob, you can get 59/64" without a test cut. The PC height adjust is however, better suited for the router table

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlike others...
I find this to be an excellent router.I have a support arm over my workbench that I use to keep hoses and cords out of my way and with the dust connection at the top of the router, this combination really clears up the work area.I use the router mainly for inlays and dovetails.I occasionally use it for trimming work on a pattern where I can't get the piece & pattern on my shaper.I've not experienced any problems with power.

I bought a DW621 from Amazon less than 2 years ago.The motor/shaft bearings have been replaced 3 times - twice by the local repair shop and the last time by shipping it to DeWalt. The bearings just failed again. The tool has (maybe) 90 minutes' run time total. It has some good points, such as the plunge operation and handles (even the switch after becoming accustomed to it).But repeated bearing failure in home workshop use tells me there is some basic flaw either in the design or in this particular tool.I have other DeWalt tools and this is the only one that has been a problem. My guess is if you get one of the good ones, it will work well and last a long time.If you get a lemon, don't waste any time repairing it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The last US built Powermatic - soon to be discontinued...
As most US Craftsmen have noticed, nearly all woodworking manufactureres are off-shoring the manufacture of their machines.Powermatic (JET) is no exception; their PM 66 series tablesaw, their shapers, and a couple drill presses are all that remain of American made machinery.I picked up the 5HP saw with the Router Lift table and am very pleased with it.It won't be long before all of Powermatic will be made in Taiwan, so if you want an American made saw, you better act now.Your next best choice is General (not General International), which is made in Canada.General carries two lines one made in Canada and their General International which is the same Taiwan crap you find at Jet.Happy shopping. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SAW .... JUST DO NOT BUY ITFROM AMAZON
The saw is great.Just do not buy this from AMAZON!!!!I have waited for over six weeks for my saw and finally gave up(I was told in the sixth week of waiting that it wasw being shipped to AMAZON from the manufacture in 3-5 weeks and AMAZON was going to take another 3-5 weeks on top of that to get me my saw for a grand total of 5 moths!) So, I went to southern tools and they shipped the saw that day. I had my saw within three days (not weeks or months like AMAZON!!!)
I received the saw in seven boxes but it was very easy to set up! The boxes they used for the saw was reinforced with 2x4's.They even test the saw before it leaves the factory (give you a readout of the test results, which is great to use as a reference.)I got the mobile base and set up the saw in the base. The table saw was square right out of the box.Just follow the directions and you will have a great saw that will last for years!
Thank You Southern Tool for my table saw!

Makita LS1212 12" Dual Rail Slide Compound Saw with Carbide-Tipped Blade

    Editorial Review

Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 12-inch dual sliding compound miter saw delivers all the cutting capacity a miter saw can give. The saw crosscuts up to 12-1/4 inches, handling two-by-twelves with ease. With a 3-7/8-inch maximum depth miter cut, the saw also cuts four-by-four material in one pass--a feature deck builders, in particular, will appreciate. Both rails are self-cleaning and ride on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature that's particularly important in a 12-inch saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle.

The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters, too, and they're deep-cast into the body of the saw, so it's hard to imagine they'd ever develop slop. The miter lock on this saw has an older screw-handle design, which is a little more time-consuming than a new (more expensive) cam-lock design. We really like the electric brake, though, a user-friendly feature that makes a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also comes with a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw has the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

I purchased the Makita LS1212 two years ago. Since then, I have cut hundreds of board feet of various types and this saw is the best I've ever used. I still haven't replaced the blade andafter all this use, it still cuts like new! If your in the market for a fine cutting machine, don't hesitate buying the Makita LS1212! You will not regret it, by no means.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Saw - Curious Pricing
I had been waiting to purchase this saw from Amazon for about two years. The saw is wonderful (I have used a friend's LS1212 several times because my chop saw is an 8" and cutting crown molding on a small saw is a real pain).Just before Christmas I priced this saw again from Amazon ($579.00 on December 23, 2004) which was comparable to the prices from all of the other discount tool sources.

Today the price for the LS1212 had risen to $699.95 on the Amazon web site - that is a $121 increase in one week!Needless to say I went to another discounters web site and purchased the saw for last week's price of $579.00.

I don't understand a 10% price increase (in one week) on this saw (from the largest tool discounter in the world) but I suggest that if you are looking to purchase the LS1212 you might want to shop around.

    5-0 out of 5 stars LS1212 Review
I purchased my Makita LS1212 from Amazon.com in December of 2003 as a replacement for a 30 years old radial arm saw with a 7.5 inch blade. It arrived without problems or damage.I also purchased a Dewalt miter saw stand, well worth the money. If experience counts when determining the validity of a review, I apprenticed as rough frame and finish carpenter for 20 years, but my current profession is Electrical Engineering. I was primarily concerned with finding a well built - solid saw that would produce precise, accurate cuts. After reading many reviews and visiting various resellers, I determined that the LS1212 was the saw for me.I use my saw for home repair and upgrades, both at my house and my friends. My Criteria for choosing this saw included:

    1. Solid Construction, many of the saws I tested had wobble in the blade when not on.I really think a blade should not wobble when off, even if the manufacturer claims it will firm up when rotating. The Makita LS1210 was rock solid, I was not able to find a major reseller of the LS1212 to test it, but as it turns out, its rock solid too. This feature is essential when lining up a cut before turning the saw on.

    2. Feel of the saw, did my hand feel comfortable on the saw's handle.Even though the handle does not rotate, its fixed vertical position is very comfortable to me.The handle has a round safety switch, when depressed, it permits the long trigger to be squeezed and the saw springs to life. Once the trigger is depressed, the safety switch remains depressed until you release the trigger -- so you can move your thumb to a more comfortable position if you like.

    3. Precise and Accurate cuts.So far I've framed a Garage door and installed a Stanley 50 inch Sliding Mirror closet door. Cut various moldings and window trims. The accuracy of this saw is superb. The pointer gauge required adjustment, out of the box so that is showed 0 when it was in the 0 stop detent. But it's designed to be adjusted so not really a big deal and its been holding the adjusted value over a lot of bumps. It cuts effortlessly through oak, pine and cedar. The saw has the capacity to cut a 4x4 post and more in one pass, and I'm about to use it.The glide is tremendously smooth and easy to push or pull. With your hand firmly on the saw handle, its easy torotate the saw down or up.

    4. Ease of use?The controls are simple to understand and so far easy to use.Its possible to lock the slide position, bevel angle and miter angle at any positon. The bevel angle is locked from in back of the saw.

    5. Smart Design.I really liked certain saws, all the controls were up front, all of the letest innovations like laser cutting guide, but these saws also had belt drives,Belts just don't make a lot of sense to me, too many mechanical problems waiting to happen (Slippage, Breakage, Spot Burn Out, Poor Torque, etc), the gear drive is so much better.Brushes are easily replaced on this saw -- it won't be a concern for some time.
I've noticed, Makita puts the saw blade safety guard return on the inside of the blade housing, very smartly designed, nothing to snag or bend -- This is especially important when on an unpredictable job site.

    Overall Impression:
This is an excellent saw, I only wish I had it when I was younger and using a manual miter saw with a dull blade. What required 5 minutes would have only been .5 seconds.Well worth the money, plus I received a 12V impact driver -- required follow up with the clearing house since they had no record of receiving my mail. The impact driver is also great -- I can't imagine how I did some jobs without it.

When the motor revs up or down, there is a definite rotational jerk transferred to the saw's handle, it's the physics of a rotating body coming into play.Once you learn to expect it, it's not so bad, you just don't want to be surprised when it happens for the first couple of times.

Any suggestions I have would just be further improvements on an already great saw, but I would like to see the following additions:
    1. Laser Light Cutting Guide. This feature would be greatly beneficial to me.
    2. Bevel lock moved to front, 90% of the time its fine locking it down from behind the saw.
    3. Cam lock some of the controls, but not critical.

    Bottom Line:
I think if you buy it, you will find it a reliable, high tolerance and above all rock solid and very durable saw.I recommend it and I would buy it again with no regrets.

    Editorial Review

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with its top-handle models, it's getting close to perfecting it. The 1587AVSK has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw but...
this is a great saw because it is well balanced and operates very smoothly. The case is very good with metal clasps that are durable, however the built-in storage area inside the case never stays closed so every time I open the case I have to stuff the spare blades back in and close the storage cover. I have had some problems with this saw that include the quick blade change mechanism, it would not release the blade easily and would not tighten all the time. I had to return it and get a new one, I bought it at Lowes so it was easy to return for a new one. Last week I droped the saw and bent the shoe so I need to replace that part but I think I'll upgrade to the Bosch 1590EVSK

4-0 out of 5 stars Great jigsaw but documentation should be better
I graduated from the Sears Craftsman "aren't all jigsaws the same?" mindset when I was blown away by this great saw.I found myself with limited access to tools and needed to build; this saw handled every task beautifully.Thick, thin, rip, crosscut, bevel--smooth, powerful, and accurate. The tool-less blade change is a real luxury.

As a first time user I encountered a few bumps in the road:First, the instructions say to turn the blade change handle counterclockwise 3 turns and insert/twist the blade.Much frustration and repetition and still no luck (is it me or is it the saw?The blade won't budge!).Finally I just kept turning the handle counterclockwise and with 6 turns there was enough laxity in the shank to turn the blade and center it on the guides. Whew. I was off to the races! But it takes me 5 or 6 turns every time (definitely NOT 3). Second, the saw came with a nice assortment of blades (including the Progressors) but they looked nothing like the Sears blades I have used for 20 years. No big deal for the pros among you, but why are the teeth angled up instead of down I wondered? And what is the best use for all these different kinds of blades? No clues in the owner's manual, so I went to the "home center" closest by and looked over the selection of Bosch blades and read all the packages. I can't say I picked up much knowledge as the fronts and backs of given packages were inconsistent in their descriptions, and the descriptions were inconsistently worded between blade types. Hey Bosch, lots of room for improvement here! All the blades that looked like woodcutting blades made great, smooth cuts, so maybe it doesn't matter that much. I uased them on walnut, cherry, andfir. Third, the 90 degree detent has a fair bit of play and takes some tinkering to get the base truly square.Once I got it squared up and tightened down there was no drift despite hours of use--unlike my two Craftsman jigsaws that liked to drift and flex, requiring frequent readjustment and gnashing of teeth (my teeth, that is).

Bottom line for you Sears diehards (excuse the pun): get a real jigsaw a start having fun.If you look around, most HD stores are still stocked from the Christmas special bundle deal: the 1587 plus a free variable speed Bosch 5" orbital sander (which works wonderfully, by the way).

    I'll be buying more Bosch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing compares
If you're an amateur or professional you have to check out this saw. There is a 30 day trial period on this saw, just try it! I have been in construction 30 years, my most favorite saw was the old style Hitachi and when my last one died I was at a dilemma on which saw to buy. First I bought the new style Hitachi, no thanks, I ended up selling it. Next I bought the new 324 mag from Porter Cable, sorry, the magnesium shoe leaves black marks on everything you cut and the dust exhaust, though a good idea, just blows the dust in the air and on a slightly windy day it's all over you. I tried the milwaukee tilt-lock as a last resort because of frustration. Actually I was wishing for my old, old style Rockwell saw which died in the seventies. But I tried this saw from Milwaukee, a total homerun. No saw has perfect dust collection and if they say so, they're lying. All conditions are different. If you want a saw that handles awesome with normal dust control, this is the saw.At least consider the 30 day trial offer.By the way I do have a 324 mag for sale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Saw!
I've had this saw about a month now and I am very impressed. This is one powerful, tough, saw. As a remodeling contractor I am very hard on tools and this saw can take the abuse.I have owned several other circular saws and this is easily my favorite.I also have the Porter Cable blade on left which I have used the last 3 years. I like the Porter Cable and I love the visibility of the blade on left, but it always feels out of balance in my hand since I am right-handed, and when setting up cuts you often find that the majority of the saw's shoe and weight is being supported by the off cut side, because the blade on left is meant for left handers.

The Milwaukee 6390 has solved this problem. It is extremely well balanced and the design of the blade opening in the shoe allows for excellent visibility of the cut line from above the saw. As a right hander you do not need to lean over the saw to see your cut line. Some guys are in such a habit of doing just that, and it is a hard habit to break.I have pointed out to them how you can easily see the cut line from above and they always comment on how great that is.

The bevel adjustment handle is large and sturdy and easy to adjust.Bevel cuts on this saw are the best I have ever experienced. It will cut bevels up to 51 degrees or so like butter. No bogging or binding whatsoever.

Two minor complaints that Milwaukee should address is that the shoe has a little bump on the edge at each corner, so that if you are using a straight edge like a speed square as a cutting guide, those little bumps will cause you to not get a perfectly square cut. To solve this I just filed them off. The other thing is that I did not like the thin kerf blade that came with the saw.I put on a heavy duty carbide framing blade and the saw cuts much smoother, and quieter.I get perfectly square cuts now, and this thing will go through a stud so smoothly it feels like 1 X .

Despite its minor flaws the Milwaukee is still deserving of 5 stars especially when you start comparing other saws. The Porter Cable is a close second in my book, but the combination of balance, power, control, and adjustments of the Milwaukee make it my top choice.Highly recommend.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Chosen #1 - Fine Homebuilding magazine . Jan.2005
After 12 yrs. of owning a Dewalt, I decided to purchase the Milwaukee #6390 Big Red, after reading many reviews, I'm glad I did. This past summer I used it to build a 16'x 40' deck. It cut the wet P.T. as if it were butter. The corners on the deck are cut at 45 degrees, no problem with the easy bevel adjustment on this saw. It is lightweight for being the workhorse it is and is very easy to see the cut line because the way the saw is made, not to mention the adjustable handle, very user friendly, The saw comes with a Milwuaukee 16T Endurance carbide blade which does a beautiful job, quick smoooth cuts. When I bought my saw the Milwaukee rep. gave me a 24T Milwaukee Endurance carbide blade, if your doing finer work than framing, this blade cuts incredibly smooth, no sanding- worth every penny-( $18 from Amazon ). And by the way, I just read Fine Homebuiding Magazine ( JAN.2005 edition )and it rated about 12 different circular saws and chose "Big Red" one of two BEST on the market today. A great tool that's great to have and fun to use. ... Read more

I wasn't aware that Makita made chain saws until my nephew told me about the UC4000 he saw on Amazon. The motor is quieter and much lighter than gas powered models with the same torque and horsepower.I bought him one for his birthday and he loves it.When he opened the box, he said he was the only kid in the first grade to have one.He earns extra money doing yard work and pruning his neighbor's trees when they aren't home. What he likes best is not having to buy gas and oil, and looking for a place to store the containers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a perfect Christmas gift....
...for my sister. She practically begged all of us to buy her a chain saw this year. She's been obsessed with chain saws ever since she was a child, but never owned one before. I decided to make her dream a reality and buy this Makita chain saw for her.

There were tears of joy in her eyes when she unwrapped it. Before I knew it, she was out in the backyard sawing down stuff with it. She totally loves her Makita chain saw!

My sister's often sculpted things out of wood. She says she's going to use her new chain saw to sculpt me a wooden statue of Bob Denver to put on my front lawn. Turns out my present to my sister is going to result in a present for me. Wooo Hooo!

Judging from my sister's reaction to this Makita chain saw, I'd say that if you're ever going to buy a chain saw...mak(e)-it-a Makita chain saw!

5-0 out of 5 stars Electric not Gas!
It is hard to believe that an electric chainsaw can cut as fast as a gas chainsaw, but this chainsaw does just that.I have to use a gas chainsaw to ruff cut the logs when I am away from the house but I use an electric chainsaw when I am near home to cut the logs into stove sized pieces, so I don't have to be bothered with the fumes and noise of a gas chainsaw.I had been using a McCulloch 3.5hp electric chainsaw and it stopped cutting because a plastic drive gear stripped out. When I contacted Makita, I wanted to know if their chainsaw had any plastic gears in it, they assured me that it was all metal gears and ball bearings through out.The Makita is supposed to be the same horse power as the McCulloch that I had, but it cuts much faster.I have gone through two McCulloch chainsaws over the years. One with a bad commutatorand the other with a bad gear. After using the Makita, I wish I had bought the Makita first. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost a great product
As earlier stated by Alan, the spindle opening had a burr that had to be removed before stock could be shaped, especially with a power feeder. The wood fence attachments need more than two holes bored in them to be able to properly adjust them to all size shaper cutters. The documentation was not up to par. If you spend close to $2,500 for a machine, the documentation should be first rate. For example, I couldn't find any specifications that showed how much of an increment the adjustable fence moves with one revolution (1/32"), nor could I find that information on the height adjustment. Finally, I'm disappointed with the shaper plate. The largest plate has a lip that holds the next smaller plate, and there is no way to use that large plate with a 4" cutter, especially the larger cope and stick cutters. You wind up having to take the ring out completely, or fashion one of your own. Having said all of this, I would still buy this machine. If you have enough confidence to tackle the minor inconveniences mentioned in this and other reviews, I don't think you can find a more solid machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars The pros and cons
First the cons: ... The fence is fastened to the table duringshipping and the paint was obviously wet when it was shipped as therewas a fair amount of dried paint on the table in the shape of the fence outline. The table also had a slight burr around the spindle opening that had to be removed before wood would slide easily across it.It takes 4 srews/nuts to hold the wooden fence to the metal part - they sent one.No hex key wrenches were included although you need several to adjust the fence. The manual content and orginizaion was so-so.Also, a miter guage would have been nice.

The Pros: once the above problems were corrected and the belt adjusted properly, the machine worked like a charm. The 5 hp motor muscles through cuts with ease and the dust collection works quite well. There is virtually no vibration and it runs more quiter than I'd expected. If you don't mind doing some of the finish work on the tool, it's a nice piece of equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Industrial strength
I purchased this not on-line. It is a very good unit and has performed to every expectation I had. Just remember to get a power feed for most work and the fence is tricky to setup the first time.

However I like it muchbetter than the other units because the quality of cut requires no finishsanding and this machine can cut all day long. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice combo, but expensive at Amazon
This is an outstanding combination for dustless sanding.I got mine from Coastal tools for $559.95 ($170.00 less than Amazon)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but reliability issues
I worked in a cabinet shop that did an ongoing production run of solid-surface bank teller counters, and for surfacing and polishing the tops, they used these Fein vacuum sanders. They were very effective, and kept that miserable Corian dust down to a very respectable minimum. However, it seemed as though they spent nearly as much time tinkering with the sanders trying to make them work decently as they did actually using them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fein Sander vs Bosch 3727DVS.
At the risk of being the odd man out. I just came from the WoodWorks2002 show at the Ft Washington PA Center. Top names were there demonstrating, as well as vendors with their wares. Fortunately the Fein sander vac combination, with all of the Fein sanders were there to use. The rep attached each of the sanders to the latest Turbo III vac. As an owner of a Bosch 3727DVS 6" sander, which is twice the money of their regular line, but less than half the cost of the Fein, I noticed that the Fein models, had vibration delivered to your hands. I had so so feelings about the Bosch sander, but after using the Fein, I must admit, I am now a lot fonder of my Bosch. The Fein did remove the material rapidly from the stock. I thought the Bosch removed material quickly also. Without a side by side comparison, it would be tough to tell any differences. The only problem with the Fein is the vibration would give me discomfort after using it for awhile. I know this sounds unbelievable after reading the other reviews that state they did not have a problem with vibration, even after hours of use. The vibration next to the Bosch model was substantial in comparison. It was that way with both of the Fein sanding models. He did not hook up the air driven model, stating it was the same as the electric, and did not have a compressor to feed it.
The odd thing is that I was talking to someone else at the store that had a Fein sanding system, and he mentioned the vibration to me. I did not prompt him for that information. A conversation broke out near a router station, and it drifted into sanders. He said, "I have the Fein sander, and the vibration is a problem." I immediately responded that I noticed the same thing.
I own a Fein RT-1800 router, see my review, "Simply put, this is the very best", and I also have the Fein Multimaster, with their pro cut, and extra individual blades, and loads of sandpaper boxes. I love the Fein quality.
The dust capturing feature is something that the Bosch has also. Holes in the bottom of the sanding pad and paper, allow the vacuum to suck up the dust. Fein advertises that it picks up 99 percent of the dust. A small amount of dust that is generated at the edges of the disc, escape the draw of the vacuum. The Bosch does the same thing.
The Fein Turbo vac is a very nice unit. It doesn't complain when the air flow is limited. It has an independent cooling air flow. I use a Sears 6 1/4 HP model that is designed for a ton of airflow. Hooking it up to the small flow of the sander, is like trying to breathe through a straw. What I did was to hook up the 2 1/2" airline to the outlet, which is smaller. I let it leak. The extra air that is released around the outside of the inlet nozzle, successfully draws that 1% of dust that escapes the edges of the pad. Wahlah, complete dust capture. Noisy in comparison, but complete.
The Fein turbo vac has the advantage of being super quiet, auto run when you start the sander (the sander plugs into an outlet on the vac, so it knows when it turns on) and is designed specifically for the flow levels of sanding.
I know I will receive a lot of flak stating that it vibrates, especially since the other reviewers are obviously professionals, and did not notice a problem with that. I did not use it for a long period of time, but the vibration was very noticeable. The Bosch 6" is substantially smoother.
The other thing worth mentioning is that the 8" Fein had a tendency to dance across the wood, when riding flat, whereas the smaller model gave you a more stable ride. It is capable of hovering without pulling you erratically. Either sander you could ever so lightly tilt to one edge, minutely off of plane, and get a stable ride, but then you are doing more digging. The perfectly flat ride, will not dig, and gives you the maximum work surface at one time. So the smaller model gives you more of the advantage of a flat sheet sander, than the 8" model does. The Bosch 6" gives you that kind of stability at all speeds. Maybe their is something inherent in the 6" disc that makes for a more stable ride.
I must admit the Fein cut a lot of material very quickly. The package is very quiet. I know from my other Fein equipment that it is built to last. For those reasons, I gave it 5 stars.
I'm overly sensitive to vibration, because I was using an inexpensive vibrating sander, that gave me throbbing fingers after 20 minutes of use. The Bosch was a dream in comparison, so when I did a hands on with the Fein, I was surprised. It was a lot better than the vibrating sander, but not as smooth as the Bosch.
If you do a decent amount of sanding, and have a hard time scuffing up the cash for the Fein unit, check out the Bosch 3727DVS. It's twice the money of the standard Bosch line, but is an impressive unit. Hope this helps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great product !
I build cabinets part time and was looking for a better, quicker way to make cabinet face frames when I saw this pocket cutter on a T.V. show. I ordered it and was very surprised at what the pocket cutter consisted of: arigid metal box, a heavy duty clamp and two porter cable router motors tobe mounted inside of the box. A trim router plunges into the wood for thescrew pilot hole, and a standard 1.5 hp router motor plunges in at an angleto cut the pocket. It makes quick, tight joints, but is only for use on15/16" to around 3/4" material. If you plan to do a lot of thistye of work, I highly recommend this product. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

We didn't want to put this one down, and that's not our usualreaction to a belt sander. But we would have happily refinished ahardwood floor with Porter-Cable's 4-inch belt sander. It feels greatin your hands thanks to the attention Porter-Cable paid to ergonomics. The front grip is perfect and the handle is comfortable, with the speedcontrol perfectly positioned for on-the-fly changes. It's heavy, butthe weight of the 12 amp motor is centered right over the platen, sothe balance is perfect and you can let this hummer do the work for you.The variable speed will let you cover from 1,000 to 1,500 surface feetper minute. We loved the quick-release belt-change lever and wonder whyno one thought of it sooner. Belt tracking is controlled with afingertip knob, and it worked like a dream in our tests. All that wouldbe enough to win our vote, but get this: it has a large-capacitydust-collection bag that swivels 360 degrees and will never get in yourway. Two thumbs up on this one. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars almost good
I've owned this sander for a couple years, but not being a big fan of belt sanders it has spent much of that time wishing I would notice it. Sporadic use made me feel that it was a worthwhile addition to the toolset, but it wasn't really tested until recently. Retired now, I volunteered to install an unfinished red oak floor in my son's family room, and having the time I decided to use the PC 362VSK for the sanding phase. I consider this a serious use of a belt sander. Here are my thoughts so far:

The tool is heavy (as we all know), so its weight (combined with the proper belt grit) provides the necessary "pushing down" force. Belt change is easy. Belt tracking is also easy to set and even if tracking wanders (not often) the easily-accessible knob makes it a non-issue. The balance seems to be good. After doing the entire floor (3 grits) it was still going strong.

Now for the negative, no stars (not even a glimmer) ratings: the dust collection is pathetic. That useless bag sticking up there getting in the way, coupled to the tool with an ineffective ball thingy that's difficult to use (and has no seal) is..well...pathetic. The dust bag will eventually fill, but this is purely coincidental...not to be confused with a dust collection system that actually works. And as far as I can see the port isn't designed to be connected to a separate vacuum...I duct-taped the hose of my Fein vac to the port and that worked well, but c'mon...duct tape?? (BTW if you take this route also tape the power cord to the vac hose making it essentially one unit...much easier to manage).

The other major issue is the sanding shoe...it warps, as another reviewer reported. Mine became convex, so the sander "rolled around" on the platen digging in and not sanding flat. Some time ago I had purchased some carbon impregnated fabric from Woodworker's Supply that was designed to be used on sander platens, so I took the metal shoe off, fitted a piece of this stuff to the cork shoe, and it worked fine. I wouldn't recommend this machine until PC includes the carbon shoe as standard. If you do buy it get the carbon shoe at the same time and send the metal one to PC with some appropriate suggestion as to what they might do with it.

This tool can do the job, but out of the box I don't consider it ready for a serious sanding project. You have to figure out how to deal with dust collection because Porter Cable hasn't, and you have to get rid of the metal shoe. It's probably one of the best 4x24s out there apart from these issues, but if mine ever goes to the boneyard I'll be tempted to try the Bosch.

2-0 out of 5 stars "poor"ter cable design
I own one of the larger solid surface shops in the Washington DC market. I'm a big fan of all Porter Cable routers(we have over 40) but the design on the wisper series belt sanders(we have 12) is by far the worst so called improvement they could have made. It is quieter, however they put the bearing for the fan that cools the motor outside the housing where it is subject to every particle of dust that passes through the machine and into the dust bag. We have a life of only 2 or 3 weeks of reasonable use before we have to have it serviced for a bearing replacement. If there were other issues I might consider abuse of some sort, but that one bearing is costing me a fortune. Also the fitting for the dust bag could use some type of "O" ring to keep dust from blowing from the poor connection from the tool to the dust bag. I will be talking to my tool repair guy to see if there is a better design from another manufacturer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sander
This is a beast of a sander but it is still very manageable.I am still amazed at how quiet it is (you still need earplugs) compared to some other belt sanders that I have used. The controls are very well thought out and easy to operate.

This sander is POWERFUL!Don't accidentally set it down while is running or you might very well sand a hole through to China!

If you want to remove a lot of material, this machine is for you. ... Read more
