    Editorial Review

DeWalt packs it all into this 12-inch compound miter saw: the big blade, the double bevel, the double rail slide. Very impressive. Finish carpenters who want to miter crown molding (up to 5-1/4 inches) vertically and framers who demand a 12-inch crosscut capacity will love this saw's 12-inch blade. The double bevel, of course, means you flip the saw instead of the wood, a great feature for those working with long molding or in confined spaces. The saw bevels to 45 degrees both ways and has the ability to bevel up to 48 if the need arises. The double rail slide is definitely burlier than the old single rail design. Both rails slide on self-cleaning, dust-sealed bearings, too.

What really gets us is the weight and balance of this saw: it slides smoothly through cuts, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels lightly (all of which speak to the saw's excellent design). You can miter 50 degrees left, 60 degrees right. We also appreciated the cam-lock miter gauge on this saw--the handle simply clamps down, which makes switching angles noticeably quicker than with a twist-lock miter.

DeWalt's D-handle is designed for right-handed use, but the trigger is big enough to use comfortably with your left hand if a particular cut requires it. The saw also has a depth-stop adjuster in case you have to cut a quick dado or two at the job site. The easy-to-read stainless-steel miter scale, with 11 positive stops allows you to lock in the most common angles quickly and, thanks to the cam-lock miter, it's also easy to dial in precise cuts just over or under the positive stop--a feature finish carpenters, in particular, will love. The electric blade stops the blade quickly, which saves time and makes work safer. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... 1-0 out of 5 stars INNACURATE AS HELL...just lke all dewalt tools
The vertical sliders was the dumbest idea going. not only a terrible saw altogether, but the thing wobbled like hell!
I'd either go with the Bosch or the Makita over this piece of trash.Total waste of money!
I have yet to have a good experience with ANY of DeWalt's tools.
I know go with Bosch/ Makita.
Overall, save yourself time and money: DON'T BUY DEWALT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Face The Facts
DeWalt makes a great miter saw any way that you look at it.I know the non-conformists disagree, but face the facts, DeWalt miter saws are solid performers. I've owned my 12 inch slider for nearly three years, and it works perfectly.I purchased a stablemate stand for it and the two go together very nicely.I like the power it has and the accuracy is superb. If you do knock the alignment out, it is easy to adjust. While I wouldn't touch a DeWalt jig saw with a 10 foot pole, their miter saws are top-notch.If you are doing a lot of intricate millwork, I would also buy the DeWalt 10 inch miter saw for increased accuracy on smaller moldings.

    Editorial Review

For a burly saw with a big blade, DeWalt's 12-inch compound miter saw is surprisingly lightweight (40 pounds) and portable. This saw makes smooth cuts through the thickest of stock, crosscuts a two-by-eight with ease, and--with its extra-high adjustable fence--miters crown molding up to 6-5/8 inches nested vertically against the fence (a timesaving feature that's reason enough for some trim carpenters to buy one). The fence also slides away for bevel cuts.

What impressed us the most was the weight and balance of this saw: the blade lowers easily into the cut, bevels are easy to set, and the miter gauge swivels smoothly. The saw's nine positive miter stops (detents) let you lock into the common angles quickly, but you can still dial in a 1/2 degree off the detent without the gauge dropping back into the stop. The detent plate is made of sturdy stainless steel, too, so it's hard to imagine it developing any slop even after years of use. The gauges are easily accessible and easy to read (what's more frustrating than having to lean around the saw to set on angle?). The saw miters up to 48 degrees on both sides and bevels left to 45.

Unlike some of their competitors, DeWalt mounted their saw with a burly blade guard that retracts smoothly and doesn't interfere with your line of sight. DeWalt's D-handle design favors right-handers, although the trigger's wide enough to use fairly easily with your left hand when cutting left-side miters. The saw doesn't have a safety switch--which, frankly, is fine by us, since some safety switches can be downright dangerous--but it's something to consider if you're doing residential or remodeling work where children might stumble across your tools. --Jon Groebner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 10 years of use without so much as a hiccup but now Dead
I bought this saw back in 1995 and have used it nearly every day since with no issues. All I can suggest is buy a quality regular kerf saw blade as I have found that a 12 inch thin kerf has too much flex and your accuracy will suffer (when doing fine work such as jewelry boxes etc.) It provides me with dead on accuracy.

    UPDATE:
I originally posted this 2/05.Three months later the tool is DOA.First the electric brake made weird noises then stopped working and shortly later the motor lost power to the point it where stalls if I do not lower the blade s l o w l y .

Can I complain?Well it was 10 years old did get used a lot.Not as much as it would have if I was a frame carpenter.but in 1995 this saw cost me $499 at a big box retailer (remember HQ?).This is my second tool I've totally killed, the first was a DeWalt 5" ROS so I'm begining to wonder about DeWalt. So I guess I'm not totally thrilled and would deduct a star from my initial rating if Amazon would let me.

    ****MAKE THIS 4 STARS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Someone doesn't know how to use their saw!!!
I work at a used tool store and have been contemplating buying the 12" compound miter saw.I read mostly the negative reviews on the saw; most complain about a problem with the table raising when you crank the knob.Well I conducted a little test with the six DW705's we have in stock. You'll be glad to hear that every single saw table did raise the harder you turned the knob.I was really disappointed since I could get a new saw for just $35.Then I thought, "How tight does that knob really have to be when cutting an angle other than a posi-stop.I hooked up a in/lb torque wrench to the knob and all be darned if it took less that 30 in/lbs of torque to very stoutly hold the miter in place!!!

I positioned a machinists square against the fence and found not even a smidgen of a gap. Then I attached a old fishermans scale to the knob and pulled all while starring at the sclaes reading waiting until the miter position overcame friction and slid into a posi lock position. It took 33lbs of pulling pressure to slide the miter off its original position.ALL WITH ONLY 30IN/LBS OF TORQUE!!!

So to all those people wandering if the table raising problem is as bad as some of these people say, it is; if you crank on that miter knob like a Gorilla!!!If only everyone had their own tool store this would of never been an issue.

Oh yeah, I just built a beutiful sleigh bed for my girlfriend in an arts and crafts style and made every cut I had to make with my new miter saw.It is an absolutely fabulous tool!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly engineered - accurate only for simple tasks
DO NOT BUY THIS SAW.The lock-down mechanism for the miter table is designed so it produces *upward pressure* on the leading edge of the table, which causes the table to move out of square with the miter fence!

This is a stupid, stupid design that even a 1st year mechanical engineering student would know to avoid.I should have sent this saw back, but since I got a good price on it, I ended up carefully grinding a new profile edge on the front of the miter table, so the locking mechanism presses *downward* against it.Scary, but it worked.I can now make accurate compound cuts, where before the cuts were totally off.

It was such a simple fix that I even put it in my CAD software and mailed the solution to DeWalt, no strings attached, for them to improve the design of the saw.I got a form letter back saying "thank you for your interest in our products, but at this time we do no wish to purchase your invention".Huh?I was GIVING them the solution, for free. These folks are clearly unmotivated and disinterested in their product line.

Needless to say, this is the last DeWalt product I'll ever purchase. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
Originally bought a different jigsaw at a retail store for about $70, but it didn't work well at all.So, I bought this saw to build a poker table and it couldn't have made better cuts.I highly recommend this product and the 101AO 20 TPI blades to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
This is a great Jig Saw very powerful and easy to control. The only criticism I offer is regarding how you change blades. I find it very awkward to have to "pull up" and turn the knob at the top of the handle. It is difficult to tell how much is enough and on more than one occaision the knob has come off in my hand. The newer Bosch models have a better way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jigsaw - Terrible Case
All of the raves about this saw are true - it's the best I've ever used.BUT, what was Bosch thinking when they designed the plastic carry case? First, they used those cheap plastic snaps that make it impossible to open the case unless you have 3 hands; there is no place to store blades, the spare footplate and the splinter shields that come with this kit; you have to remove the sawblade to put the saw in the case; and lastly, trying to get the power cord back in the case and close it is like trying to get toothpaste back in the tube. In frustration, I threw out the case and bought my own. A larger case with metal latches and some storage space would be ideal or else a soft carry case that has some pockets ... Read more

This last weekend I was putting in windows.I have two 9ft sliding glass doors.Somehow I mismeasured and needed to cut the stucko back. This tool cut beautifully. It has plenty of power for my needs. It is my new favorite tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure power
I purchased this Bosch grinder through Amazon.com to tuck point brick work. Received the tool in one week with free shipping. The paddle switch is a safe feature. When you release the paddle it stops. I found it to be very powerfull and it has absolutely no hesitation. Pure power!
I installed a dry diamond blade for cutting brick - cut like butter with a hot knife. Installed a 4 1/2" diamond tuck point wheel and removed a mortar joint 35" wide in seconds. Highly recommend this tool if your looking for a good grinder. Well worth the money for the safety & power it delivers.

    Editorial Review

If you're looking for a low-cost, effective, reliable reciprocating saw without alot of extra bells and whistles, Porter-Cable's Tiger saw might be your best bet. It's amongthe lowest-priced professional-grade saws on the market, but lacks none of the power andperformance of its competitors. The Tiger saw features trigger-controlled variable speeds(0 to 2,600 spm), a 10 amp motor, and a 1-1/8-inch stroke length. The saw also features atool-free quick-change chuck. It doesn't have orbital action or the vibration-dampeningcounterbalance found on some of the more expensive saws, but unless you're a full-timedemolition and destruction specialist, this is all the saw you're likely to need. The Tigersaw is plenty tough enough to make just about any cut, and it comes with Porter-Cable'sreputation for reliability. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for rennovation, demo and hobbies(?!!)
Awesome tool!Read about different recip saws before buying and got this at substantial discount.Have been working on a church building and renovating project for several months now and the only reason the other guys have used another saw (cordless) is because of extension cord availability. This has got the power and durability to make any job easier...walls, 100 year old (real!) 2x4s that are iron-hard, floors, oversized beams.Demo is fast and easy with the orbital cuts...fine work is pretty controlled with the straight cuts.

Best flexible recip we've had so far.Professional (or almost) at hobbyist price - you can't go wrong with this saw.

My wife has been using it for rough cutting a carousel animal she's been working on with very long blades and it worked great for the initial "rounding" of the animal (now...is it a tiger or a bear? - only time will tell).

I'd buy it again or another if I burn this one out!

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use and FUN!
Before i borrowed a "Reciprocating Saw" (Sawzall is technically a registered trademark) from a relative, i had no idea how easy it made demoliton. I was able to go in and surgically remove any offending pipes, nailers, floorboards, basically anything I didn't like. The only thing it seemed like it couldn't do was to cut through a cast iron bathtub, but the twenty pound sledge made quick work of that project. I was greatly dissapointed when I had to return the borrowed tool, but quickly quelled my dissapointment by purchasing my own. (by the way, the saw which i borrowed was a DeWalt 18 volt XRP cordless, great tool, if you have a higher budget)
When i went to my local home store, i was torn over what model to purchase. This model looked like an acceptable upgrade to the lower-end corded DeWalt model. It was only ten bucks more, but had three more amps and a bigger stroke length. Porter-Cable makes another great tool. (and as a final plus, the're made right here in the good ol' us of a.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, especially for the money
I think that you really cannot beat this saw for the money. It has 10 amps of power. All the other comparably priced reciprocating saws are 6-8 amps. That's a big difference. To get comparable power, you're going to have to spend 150-170 on another brand. Is it just me or does PC always have the most power at a lower price?
Anyway, the saw does what it needs to do.With the appropriate blade, it will cut through just about anything.I got it because I was renovating an old barn and it is about the only tool that can cut off a 4x4 or 6x6 that is still nailed into the wall. Also cuts through nails w/o a problem. That's a big time saver if you're renovating.
Only negatives are that it is very loud and vibrated pretty bad. Also seems a bit heavy. But who cares?Reciprocating saws are pretty specialized tools. When you need one, it is the only thing that will do, but you just don't use them that often. So get this one.It does everything you want it too at a cheap price.Use the cash you save to buy a nicer drill or miter saw. ... Bosch's 1617EVSPK is a strong entry in the 2-1/4-horsepowercombination router market. Solid, all-magnesium construction makes theBosch durable and lightweight, while special touches, such as woodenhandles on the fixed base and contoured, soft-grip handles on the plungebase, add to the comfort of users and give the tool a look ofdistinction lacking in some of its competitors. Of course, looks areonly skin deep, and this router has plenty to offer below the surface aswell. At its heart, a powerful 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower motor deliversconsistent results at variable speeds of 8,000 to 25,000 rpm. Theexclusive precision centering design ensures bits are perfectly centeredin the router base, a handy feature for maintaining accurate cut lines.A wider-than-average base opening provides superior visibility andallows the Bosch to accept larger bits, while a micro bit-depthadjustment system makes fine-tuning fast and easy. Unlike manycomparable routers, the Bosch 1617EVSPK is designed to move from base tobase without the use of tools. Instead, it clamps solidly into place forquick and easy transfers. What's more, the motor never rotates whileadjusting depths, allowing you to stow the power cord on either sidewhere it's out of the way. --Carl Thress ... Read more

    3-0 out of 5 stars 2 years later .......
I've had this router package for about two years now & use it on average 2 or 3 times a week. At first I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now that the honeymoon is over I've come to the conclusion that it's a decent design with a few minor annoyances & a couple of major faults. Some nice idea's but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

    1. I like the handles on the plunge base, good ergonomics, good control. I don't like the wooden handles on the fixed base. Poor fit & finish. They regularly come loose & need to be retightened. Lockwashers don't help. I don't use locktite because I remove the handles for some of the jigs & baseplates I use.

    2. I love the 8 position turret on the plunge base. This should be an industry standard.

    3. The Bosch plunger is a normally locked type. I like the plunge lever to be normally unlocked like Hitachi & DeWalt it makes it much easier to set depth of cut.

    4. Changing bases. When the router is cold it's a wrestling match to remove the base. It gets better as it warms up & then becomes too loose on the plunge base. I've tried adjusting the screw on the latch & haven't been able to hit the magic spot yet.

    5. The fine adjustment on the fixed base. This is undoubtably related to the previous issue. It's too tight when it's cold & then gets easier as it warms up. The adjustment knob helps quite a bit. But then you can't turn it over on it's head to change bits unless you balance it on the edge of the table. Kind of a pain. Also the knob has to be removed to remove the motor. Too many steps, too many parts. I prefer the simple continuous adjustments that DeWalt & Milwaukee use.

    6. Template guides. These are OK but again too many parts, levers & steps leave too much room for error. I made baseplates that accept PC type guides. Much better.

    7. The edge guide is a nice unit.

    8. The motor has a plenty of power. The soft start & constant response are both excellent features.

    9. That pesky power switch. I've replaced 2 & keep a spare on hand. My parts guy tells me there is nothing else that will fit. We're stuck with a lousy switch. I don't need to know how or why it fails, thats Bosch's responsibility, it should never have failed in the first place. They flat out blew it on this one & have not stepped up to the plate to resolve the issue. Bosch has been aware of this for quite some time & continues to sell a router with a known bad part. Apoor product coupled with an apparent total disregard for their customers speaks volumes.

Knowing what I know now I would not buy this router again. I think Bosch was attempting to reinvent the wheel & may have started out on the right track, but ended up missing the mark Happy woodworking!

4-0 out of 5 stars the good and bad
overall this should be a 5 star.good fit. smooth action.nice extras.feels good in my hands, comfortable.
sub base on fixed base not flat. check for flatness when you get yours.
5/8 bushing too long for my leigh dovetail jig.shortened it about 1/8 inch. the other 2 bushings will work but are really too short. maybe i will get the 7 piece bushing set by bosch. reviews say there is a pc bushing adapter init.
the 2 other bushings may be just fine for other templates.bushings stick out past sub base about 1/8 inch
this is a very good router combination pack

5-0 out of 5 stars Information on switch problem
Ok, Do you want to put this whole switch issue to bed?I took my non-functioning switch out last night and disassembled it.The switch is fine, there are no electronics inside, it is a standard toggle switch. The problem is it is the wrong switch for this application. When I opened mine there was at least 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of saw dust packed in there. So the only problem was that the contacts were being held open because there was saw dust between therm.I just cleaned all the dust out and put it back together and it worked fine.

There is a new Bosch part number for the replacement switch, which indicates a design change.I hope the new switch is sealed, but I don't know yet because I haven't received mine in the mail.If it is not I'm going to look to find one that is the right size and amp that is sealed and it should stop this issue altogether.

I think mine failed sooner than most because I have used it in my router table more than free hand routing and my table has an enclosed area for the router which does get pretty dusty, I think static draws the dust in from the outside because the switch body is pretty well sealed from the inside workings of the router.

    Editorial Review

Impressively compact, lightweight, and comfortable to use,Panasonic's 15.6-volt drill/driver fits into tight spaces where other(bulkier) drills won't. But what really sets this drill apart from thecompetition is its unique electronic speed control. Unlike other drillson the market, this Panasonic delivers full torque at any speed, so youcan apply up to 390 inch-pounds of torque while still maintainingcontrol. That makes it a smart buy for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and even woodworkers--in short, anyone who wants a small, compact drill that packs a lot of torque and is built to last. Itweighs just 4.4 pounds (with battery) and is (only!) 8-3/16 incheslong. The 1/2-inch chuck takes bigger bits. The hard-rubber handle isvery easy to grip during constant use, even if you have smallish hands. In addition, the forward/reverse switch is easy to reach with yourtrigger hand. In fact, the tool's superior ergonomic design--never mindits great performance--is enough win some people over. The tool lacksan onboard bit holder, but that's about all it lacks. The packageincludes two 2 amp NiCad batteries (slightly more expensive kits comewith the Panasonic's long-lasting 3 amp batteries), a universalcharger, and a hard-plastic carrying case. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Case, Very Handy
I bought this with a Dewalt hammer drill.I'm a modestly serious DIY-er and have not used all the pieces of the kit yet, and may never do so.

The case is extremely useful. It has two locking covers to keep things from falling out, so one is not looking for fifteen bits after an accidental upset.TIP: open it on the floor so you can't spill it.You'll only ignore this advice once...

It took me a while to get used to the latches on the case, but that's a trivial inconvenience compared to spilling and losing a lot of bits IMHO.

The only real drawback I see to the case is that the compartments are a little short, and there's not room to put a large drill bit set in this. However, you'll probably want to keep those in the original container anyway.

The bits are a useful assortment.I have not noted any obvious problems with the bits yet.The quality may have improved since the 2002 review.I don't plan on doing a lot of nut driving with this, as I have an impact wrench for that application. And I have not used the drill bits for anything but soft pine and aluminium yet, but they seem OK for that.

So, very convenient packaging, good bit assortment, OK for my use so far.Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nifty Case, CheapBits. Is Anything Made InUSAAnymore?
I bought this set, which includes a quick change chuck, origin unkown, quick change magnetic nut drivers- 1/4",USA and 5/16", USA, quick change drill bits,USA, quick change socket adapters- 1/4", China, and 3/8", Taiwan, quick change magnetic 1/4" screw guide, China, and an assortment of screw driver bits, origin unknown, to speed up my production on projects. All are stored in a locking clam shell case, which when flipped open reveals two locking storage compartments which have spacers to seperate the various bits. Nice case! It's made of durable plastic, everything locks up, and gives you a convenient little package in which to store all your small bits and driver accessories.

The "accessories" which came with this kit leave something to be desired. The quick lock chuck is fine.It appears to be of decent quality (origin unknown) and doesn't have too much slop when inserting a bit.By the way, it's too big to fit in the clam shell case. The bits on the other hand come from at least three different countries!
The USA, Taiwan, and last and certainly worst, "the great land of China."I have nothing against the people of China but their tools ... - bad metallurgy and bad tolerances.I apologize if I have offended anyone: I'm passionate about quality.Anyway, when I looked at the packaging before buying this Dewalt kit, the package said "Made in the USA".So I bought with confidence. Silly me! I prefer American, German, and Swiss tools.
Unfortunately, the quick change drill bits 1/16" to 3/16" were stamped USA and looked pretty roughly manufactured: they were dull, had a "painted on" appearing finish, and didn't fit snugly into the quick change chuck. The hex ends of these drill bits are not steel: a magnet won't hold them.Maybe they are aluminum? This was a disapointment to me. I expected better quality, especially from something that is supposedly made in the USA. The bits made in China and Taiwan and "elsewhere" fit in the chuck fairly snuggly, but their finish and appearance are a little rough, and I have doubts about the durability of the steel in these bits.Several of them are already developing rounded, "chewed out," edges, and this is only from light use. Dewalt, what is happening to you?Your quality is going down hill and then you deceive the public through false labelling.

So the end result is that I like the case and chuck, that's where the three stars come from (actually I would rate this kit as 2 1/2 stars if I could) but consider most of the bits and drills in this kit to be throw away junk.... ... Read more

Porter-Cable 743-K 7-1/4", 15 Amp Framer's Saw with Carrying Case (Blade on Left)
    by Porter-Cable
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

Porter-Cable's 7-1/4-inch blade-left circular saw is an excellent choice for builders who want a saw with power (it has a 15 amp motor) but that's not as heavy or difficult to handle as a wormdrive saw (it weighs only 10-1/2 pounds). Traditionally, sidewinder saws have the blade on the right side, so most right-handers are accustomed to looking over the saw to sight a line. A left-side blade lets a left-hander cut the same way--and some right-handed users, especially those accustomed to using (blade-left) wormdrive saws, will also appreciate the better blade visibility such a saw affords. In the end, it's really just a matter of personal preference.

To lighten the saw, Porter-Cable used lightweight, durable magnesium--whichwon't crack or bend--for the blade guards and part of the housing. The saw'sstill tough, though; in fact, Porter-Cable boasts that this saw can sustain upto a 6-foot drop without damage. This saw also sports a very flat, very strongcast-magnesium table, too, with reinforced ribs that make it very difficult tobend or break. (Can someone tell us why some companies ruin a good saw by givingit a wimpy table?)

Porter-Cable took care of the details, too. The no-catch lip on the blade guardhelps ensure the guard won't catch on an edge at the beginning of a cut, and itkeeps a user's hands away from the retraction lever. The 360-degree adjustabletop dust nozzle lets you direct sawdust in any direction, and you can easilyattach a dust bag or a shop vac to collect the dust--a particularly handyfeature for a remodeler who wants to make a couple of cuts indoors withoutmaking a mess. There's also a clip on the top of the saw that lets you clamp thecord off to the side when you're cutting sheet material, so it's less likely todrag behind and snag the edge. A heavy-duty carrying case comes included, too, though it's a little tricky getting the saw to fit inside. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Light Weight, Great Balance
Great saw.I'm a righty and really like the left hand blade for visibility (especially cutting sheets). But what really sold me on this saw was the "feel".You can't pick this out from a spec sheet but you know it when you use the tool.Let me say that I'm normally a HUGE Milwaukee fan, so that's the first place I went when I needed a new saw. They looked great and had some nice features but then I tried one.For me, the grip and balance of the Porter Cable felt a lot better.

I also picked up a dust bag and was surprised at how well it worked. It's a little annoying hanging out there but it really catches a lot of dust (nice for working inside people's houses).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great saw AND great case
SAW - I bought this saw for building decks and doing residential remodeling. It has proven to be up to the task --- lightweight, powerful, and makes accurate cuts because I can see the blade's alignment with each cut. Overall, I agree with all the other positive reviews of the saw, so no need to repeat.

CASE - The reason I'm writing this review is that some other reviewers have commented about the case, that it's too small and doesn't have room for accessories like extra blades, the rip fence, and the dust bag...I say, please take another look. The folks at Porter Cable didn't make a great saw, only to have a mental lapse when designing the case. Perhaps the case design is just a bit too clever, and the otherwise great manual didn't give any clues as to how to get everything to fit. So, here goes:

Let's assume you have the saw, along with an extra blade or two, the rip fence, and the dust bag, all out of the case. Here's how to get them to easily fit:

    1) Blades - Notice the small post in the bottom of the case. It's 5/8" dia., just like it should be for blades, and about 1/3" tall --- good for storing at least two blades. Put the blades on the post.

    2) Saw - Put the saw in its normal place, sitting on the left and right "ramps" in the case bottom. Now, the saw holds the blades in place, so they can't get tossed around in there and nick the power cord.

    3) Stuff the power cord into the space behind the hand grip of the saw, and to the right of the motor housing.

    4) Rip fence - Place the rip fence horizontally across the motor housing, with the "T" end to the left, and the long bar toward the power cord. It's okay if one of the ends at the "T" points upward, because the lid has clearance for it when it's closed.

    5) Dust bag - Roll up the bag aound its internal wire frame, just like rolling up a windowshade. Then place the bag in the case, right along the front edge of the saw, between the case handle and the blade arbor. Orient the elbow end of the bag toward the left, so that it "turns the corner" around the dust chute end of the saw. Finally, the right end of the wire frame will need to be "tucked" into place inside the rim of the case bottom (bends the wire just slightly; don't worry, it snaps right back).

    6) Close the case lid. If everything is in place, nothing binds at all as the lid closes.

Well, if it sounds complicated, just do it once; it isn't. -Took me less than 20 seconds on my first try, and I wasn't even hurrying.

True, it would be nice if the case came with metal latches like Porter-Cable's Tiger Saw case. But, if the plastic latches ever break, I'll just cut them away and put metal latches on the case from a hardware store.

I like the high impact plastic case better than a metal one, because it absorbs shock better if dropped, and doesn't scratch up my truck bed and tool box, which would then begin rusting. Though I have the largest WeatherGuard saddle-style box, there's still only so much room in there, so the compact case helps.

Also, the storage of the blade wrench in the saw's handle is a nice touch.

Bottom line - The P-C 743K saw and case have been refined to near perfection, especially for the money, which is why I give them 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Woodworker
The Porter Cable 743K is the best circular saw on the market.

The main thing that sets this saw apart from the rest is the magnesium plate.Pick up any other brand and you'll find the bases are usually warped (even if they aren't, just one drop and they will be).The porter cable bases are straight everytime and are stronger than any other brand. The porter cable bases also slide accross materials very smoothly, other brands often catch on imperfections in the wood, not the porter cable.

I use my saw for precise rips and crosscuts (because I can't fit a table saw in my shop) so I need accurate and consistant cuts, this saw comes through everytime.I recommend buying a clampdown fence if you'll be doing a lot of rips and bevels that require table saw like accuracy, plus it's nice for routing and a host of other uses.

My only minor gripe is not with the tool itself. The case pretty lame. It's fine if you just want to store the tool in a safe place, but if you're doing any job-site toating you might want to invest in something that can fit your saw and it's accessories (like another blade) into one case.

I also recommend getting a Freud Diablo 40 tooth blade if you care about making clean cuts. The blade that mine came with is not bad, I use it to cut joists, decking, sheets, or whatever else that doesn't need a super clean cut.Freud makes my favorite blades and this one cuts like butter. It's also got thin kerfs (though it's still very very strong) so it takes less of your wood with it.Perfect match for this saw, rips purple heart and iron wood with ease.

I'd recommend looking at the 347K as well to see which side you like the blade on better.I thought that I wanted the blade right at first but after cutting a while with both (my work buddies happen to have both models, lucky me) I found that the blade left was actually better for a right hander like me.

The bottom line is you can't get a better saw for the money. This tool will be around as long as you're a woodworker (not sure how long if you're a serious framer, but I suspect it would last as long as any saw (including worm-drives) that you can buy).I got mind for ... $$ dollars at Home Depot (20% of all tools christmas sale) and it the best money I ever spent.Buy this saw.Five Stars. ... Editorial Review

DeWalt's 5-inch random-orbit sander is a great tool for professional woodworkers and painters, as well as homeowners looking for a reliable sander for do-it-yourself projects. It has a 2 amp motor that provides up to 12,000 orbits per minute, with a 3/32 orbit diameter. Its controlled finishing system maintains consistent control over the pad speed, minimizing gouging at startup, and the variable-speed motor ramps smoothly between speed levels when adjusted on the fly. While it has less vibration than many sanders we've tried--thanks in part to DeWalt's dual-plane counterbalanced fan--we found that gripping the tool from the side rather than from the top seemed to be easier on the hands. The top grip could get tiresome in extended-use situations. We liked the dust canister configuration on this tool, which uses a simple and effective twist-lock mechanism to help prevent air pressure from popping the canister off the tool. The sealed switch is also a good idea that will help prevent dust contamination problems. The kit comes with the sander, a dust collector, a vacuum attachment, and the case. --Brian Trinen ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Weak dust collector assembly
I've had the sander for just over a year and it has performed very well, until now. The dust collector assembly keeps coming off, every 30 seconds! The design of how the dust colletor port is attached is very weak, in my opinion. My work-around is to wedge a small piece of anti-skid matting in the port. A small sheet metal screw driven through the dust collector assembly and the port may also improve this poor design.

The $%^& collector keeps shooting off while working.I'm taking it back.

1-0 out of 5 stars not reliable

    Editorial Review

For those seeking a midsize jointer for the long haul, this 6-inch model is a great find suitable for the professional workplace or serious home woodshop. Powered by Delta's trusted 1-horsepower induction motor, the three-blade drum spins quietly in its cast-iron bed. Adjusting with rack-and-pinion precision, the fence tilts 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees for beveling and chamfering applications. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side--a feature for which we have much respect. Thanks to industrial-grade infeed and outfeed tables, even longer 6-inch-wide planks get the support they need as you remove up to 1/2 of an inch of material to the collection port on each pass. So you want to increase your edge on the competition? Delta feels the same way. --Justin Paul ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fence Biggest Drawback
If it were not for the cheap, cast aluminum fence I would recommend this. I think if you search enough you'll see that this is the single biggest complaint about this.

Suggestion: hold off until you can afford the next Delta model up (I believe that is the 360). It may be 2X the price, but well worth it. Also, the Ridgid is an outstanding buy at $399.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars works for me.
i,ve been using this jointer for about two months now and it is a real joy to use. i,ve heard the other reviews that were not to good, but mine is just great.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's with the pulleys not aligning?
After doing my homework (reading many reviews of 6" jointers in woodworking publications as well this forum), I settled on the Delta. The Jet had caught my eye (I have 3 other Jet machines, and have been impressed with their Quality Control), but in the end I opted for the Delta.

There is no question this is a great 6" jointer, as other reviewers have said. However, there is a design flaw (are you listening, Delta?) mentioned by other reviewers.

Why should I have to reverse the pulleys to get the belt properly aligned?ESPECIALLY SINCE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT! There, I feel better.

I also have another minor complaint with setup. The third bolt that attaches to the base through the dust chute could be a challenge for big armed, big handed guys.I managed, with very little wiggle room.

Overall, results with this jointer are impressive. Out of the box, the Delta performed flawlessly. No question, I'd give this product 5 stars, if not for the above-mentioned gripes.

I highly recommend purchasing a Delta 22-580K 13" planer to complement the jointer.I did, with no regrets. Now that's a fine product, worthy of 5 stars.

At the end of the day, the jointer and planer make a fine team.
Get past the setup, and this jointer will perform very well for you.No question. ... Read more

Delta calls its 22-580 a finishing planer, but it's really two planers in one. A dimensioning speed of 60 cpi allows you to shave rough wood to its desired thickness quickly and accurately, with virtually no snipe. Then, with a single pass at the quicker finishing speed of 90 cpi, your wood comes out ultrasmooth and ready to go. The razor-sharp, double-sided M2 steel knives are powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt, single-phase motor. Bells and whistles like a blade zero indicator (which lets you set the cutterhead to the exact thickness of your wood), patented cutterhead lock (which eliminates snipe), and easy blade-change system add to the value, as do the oversize infeed and outfeed tables, which make it easier to glide your wood through the machine. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Real Happy with it or Delta
I purchased my Delta 2 speed finishing planer last Oct or Nov, I could check on which but it is not that important. At first I was thrilled. The unit made short work of rough lumber. The depth stop was outstanding. Snipe? I really didn't notice any. I have only done a couple of projects with it but those I've done entailed planing 4/4 cherry and oak to 3/4" and on some of the cherry 1/2".
I was working on the cherry project when I noticed the depth stop didn't. It set just fine but I could lower the head without so much as a slowdown. I also noticed sometimes boards would feed a few feet in (these are 4' lengths) then sieze up. I also started to notice the dreaded snipe.
I called Delta technical support and the woman I spoke to said open up the side with the stop and adjust the nut. She didn't say where to adjust it to so I tried up and down to no avail. She also said the siezing was caused by perhaps dirty feed rollers and if I put the speed control in the middle (neutral) the rollers would rotate freely. NOT SO, to clean the entire surface requires random runs to position the rollers to different stop points.
I finally took it in to the local Porter Cable/Delta repair facility. When I picked it up the repair guy was noticably condenscending. Perhaps I didn't bother to read the instructions? Did I even have the instructions? Could I read? He accused me of breaking it (causing the stop to not work). He came just shy of saying the snipe was due to the flimsy little feed tables on infeed and outfeed and to fix it I need to build a good perfectly level feed table for both sides.
Hmmm, ok but have you checked the price? This thing cost more than my Jet (or Delta) table saw. For that money I don't expect to be buying flimsy. At any rate, the Jet Planer is way beyond my budget so I am stuck with the Delta. If the two were close I'd give this puppy only one star, sell it and get the Jet.
By the way, I have yet to determine if the 2 speeds really do anything. The pitch sounds the same, the feed rate appears the same, and the finish looks the same. If anything, the slow speed finish might actually be smoother. It is close either way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Feeding problems galore
Bought the planer mid-summer 2004.Before the end of the year the planer began requiring "help" to keep the boards moving.Periodically it would just hang, burning the board.A quick nudge was needed to continue feeding.

Normal maintenance includes cleaning the rollers. The manual says to use a scotch pad and soapy water.I also adjusted the outfeed roller per the manual. This would fix the problem for a while, but it would slowly go back to its old ways.Eventually it gets so bad it requires a constant pushing or pulling to get the boards to feed continuously.Dangerous, frustrating, and leads to poor results. The finish when it works is amazing, but I have found the machine to be a poor substitute for a heavier duty unit.I am only a hobbyist, building boxes and some small furniture.

4-0 out of 5 stars great planer but ....
I have been making cabinets for the last five years and in that short amount of time I have used three different planers. This is the best one I've ever used. First off what really impressed me was that there was not that much assembly required (unlike most of delta's products). Second the finishing speed on the planer nearly eliminated the need for sanding (a big plus in my book). Lastly the blades seemed to hold up well. The first time out of the box I put it to work on a set of hard maple face frames and doors. Only at the end of my planing opporation did the boards start to show signs of planer marks (by that time I had put over 300 board foot of material through that planner). The planer marks were small and were easily taken care of with a cabinet scraper. Though out the entire process I only found one case of snip in a board and after that I have not detected any more cases of snip. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the dust chute was not included rendering the planer usless with out it. Luckily I had read some of the reviews before I bought this planer so I knew I had to kick down the extra mony for the dust chute to start planing right out of the box. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Delta's 28-276 band saw is a smart buy for the serious hobbyist interested in curve cutting and light resawing. The 3/4-horsepower 120-volt motor delivers smooth, quiet, reliable power, while the saw's nine-spoke wheels deliver more accurate tension on the blade, greatly reducing vibration. The heavy cast-iron trunnions likewise minimize vibration to the blade. For curve cutting, the large 16-by-16-inch table provides excellent support for workpieces, and tilts to 45 degrees for bevel cuts. The saw handles stock up to 6-1/4 inches thick with a throat capacity (the distance from frame to blade) of 13-3/4 inches. The lower blade guide on this saw rests only 3/4 inch below the table, which significantly minimizes deflection in the blade, a big plus. When the saw is not in use, the tension-release lever extends the life of the blade. It also makes switching blades quick and easy. The saw comes equipped with a 4-inch dust port, a smart feature you won't find on many other band saws on the market today. Package includes 3/4-inch woodcutting blade and instruction manual. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems OK
I just bought my bandsaw on Sunday. Everything seems to be working OK and I am fairly satisfied. True, the packaging was heavy, but the heavier the machine, the more steady it will be when you place any heavy items on it that you are working with.

My only problem is after I spent 3 hours assembling the thing, I realized it didnt come with a rip fence or miter guage, and the main thing I wanted to do was resaw.

I have to wait until the next day to go back to Lowes and they do not sell any assessories for delta tools. I go to the Delta website and type in my zip code on their dealer locator and four nearby Lowes stores come up on the screen.

After paying $400 for a saw, you would expect these two items to be included?

4-0 out of 5 stars Nota bad Bandsaw for $399.
Took me about 2 hours to assemble the saw, all the holes were drilled in the right places and the welds were good. Bolts were hard enough so they didn't strip out when tightened.Bought a Mobile base from Sears right away because of limited space in my little shop. When properly adjusted the saw ran fine, vibration occured at first because of incorrect adjustments on my part, but after that it was quite and ran very nicely.Although you can get a better saw, and ofcourse pay alot more money, this band saw will satisfy me very nicely as I'm retired and on a fixed income.I'd recommend this saw highly, inspect the product very closely before you assemble it to make sure all parts are properly machined and align right, this is something you need to do with any product you have to assemble.
    Happy Band Sawing!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I received this saw for Christmas and I am gravely disappointed with the Chinese way of craftsmanship.I have used the saw for approximately 15 hours.During this time it usually does not work longer that 15 minutes without something going wrong. The upper tire comes off every few minutes and both wheels are out of balance. The machine vibrates uncontrollably and is horrible to use.Save yourself a lot of heart ache and buy something else, preferably made with pride in the United States. ... Editorial Review

A staple in the professional woodshop, a drill press should be able to perform grunt work, yet quickly adjust for precision applications. Jet's 16-1/2-inch model does just that. Made of cast-iron and heavy-gauge steel components, this press spins bits up to 5/8 of an inch with 16 speeds from 200 to 3,630 rpm. A 3/4-horsepower induction motor drives the belts, and, for your convenience, it can run off either 115-volt outlets (for which it comes prewired) or 230-volt sources. The large 13-3/4-inch worktable glides easily with rack-and-pinion adjustment and tilts 45 degrees right or left to accommodate your needs. Two features we like are the positive depth stop on the left side, which quickly adjusts and locks in place via three nuts, and the built-in lamp, a nice touch some competitors don't offer. Changing belt position is a snap after flipping open the hinged metal cover, and, to personalize the press for your comfort and peace of mind, you can adjust the tension on the spindle return spring, as well as lock out the start button to protect others in your absence. This industrial-style drill press is a tool any professional or serious home woodworker can depend on. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Drill Press
I chose this drill press after reading a lot of reviews comparing Jet, Delta, Ridgid, etc., both here and in forums, magazines, etc., and the Jet received higher marks on average (all had reviews that ranged from excellent to poor, so one has to obtain some sort of weighted average).I also checked out the Ridgid and the Jet at local stores, and both looked and felt good (lowering quill, manually turning spindle, raising table). The Jet had a larger "swing," longer quill travel, and a larger motor (3/4 hp vs. 1/2 hp) than the Ridgid, though the Ridgid was cheaper. Also, one local store that carries very high quality power tools only stocked Jet drill presses, an indication that the owner is putting his reputation behind them.

Assembly was easy and was completed without a hitch.Putting a straight 3/8" rod into the chuck, I checked that the table was square to the rod and that runout was minimal (I forget the measurements, but runout was very small).

I have had this drill press for 3 months now, and it is working well.At first use, there was some vibration at almost all speeds, so I checked that the pullies were aligned vertically (coplanar), which they were, and that the motor was not vibrating (it was smooth when removed and run on the bench).I then purchased a 5' link belt, which nicely made the two ~29" belts required, and the vibration was reduced to a minimal level (passes nickel test even when starting). The vibration was not really excessive before the link belts, but enough to make me less than ecstatic with my purchase. With the link belts, I'm very happy with the drill press.

The lowest speed of 200 rpm is very handy for larger Forstner bits and hole saws. The built-in light is nice (I had no bulb trouble that others noted), as is the chuck key holder, a small item but very convenient.

My only complaint is that the rack and gear system for changing the table height has some areas where it wants to bind a bit and then "jump."However, I crank slowly, and when I feel resistance, I back off and ease through it.Unlike some reviewers's units, my rack is straight and flush with the support, and slides smoothly (when rotating the table to either side), though problems that others have noted with the racks have helped by alerting me to swing the table slowly, watching the rack ends as they slide.

Overall a nice drill press that I hope will last until my son or one of my daughters inherits it from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many problems right out of box
I bought the Jet because, like many others, I was impressed with the good things other reviewers had to say about its overall value. The motor is more than powerful enough, the construction seems sturdy, and the range of speeds is impressive.

Now let me tell you about my ordeal with this drill press. When it arrived (1 day late) via ABF, the box was absolutely mutilated. The driver noted the damage to the box, and that there was no visible damage--which was true enough. In spite of the box's condition, the pieces inside seemed to be undamaged. Assembly took only about an hour. Everything fit together nicely, except the rack, which is bowed so that there is about 1/2 in of space between it and the support post. The cast iron base is heavy and sturdy, but mine is warped--no matter where I place it, I have to shim one corner to keep it from rocking. The motor is quiet, but the motor-mount is bent. The whole motor assembly sits about 7 degrees off plumb. Naturally this is a little disconcerting. I had no trouble mounting the arbor and chuck to the quill, but the run out is so severe (over 1/32 in.) that I get oblong holes. And talk about rattle! This thing rattles in more places than I can count! From top to bottom! Forget about the `nickel test', I can't even get a wrench to stay put on the table--it dances right over the edge.

In short, this drill press is 100% unusable.

I assume poor handling during shipping caused most of the problems I have experienced, but judging by other reviews, maybe not all.

I'm more than disappointed. I hope cases like this are rare.

    UPDATE 1:
I have been on the phone with tech support for over an hour. The rep I spoke with was very patient and understanding and he didn't dismiss my frustration. After some time talking about the problems, he sent me off to do a little troubleshooting on my own. When I called him back with the results, he advised me to send the whole thing back to Amazon.

    UPDATE 2:
The replacement arrived in much better condition than the first. The belts are still terrible, but otherwise this machine seems to be trouble free.

There was quite a lot of confusion about returning the defective unit, and in the end, I had to wait for the 'threatening letter' from Amazon before I could get a phone number to call and sort it out.

    Final thoughts:
I have purchased several other items from Jet, and I'm sure I will again in the future. I do wish quality control was a little more effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill Press - Amazon Stinks Though
This drill press is very nice. The description isn't as thorough as it could be on the site.It has plenty of speeds and the quality of the work that comes off of it is very nice.
Be careful when ordering.Amazon claims free shipping and in stock.I had to wait 2 weeks - and they charged me an addl. $9.95 for shipping.Wouldn't have been a big deal except I needed it for business. And they strung me along week by week instead of being up front about the delay.
Also having the same shipping and availability problems with a bandsaw I ordered from Amazon that same day.Had to cancel and order from a different supplier. ... Read more
