5-0 out of 5 stars So Fein.
The German engineers say this sander, combined with a good
vacuum, takes away up to 98% of the dust of sanding. They
have to worry about Lawyers.I do not.It gets rids of
    *all* the dust.

I hooked it up to a Fein vacuum (model 9-55-13) which I got a
year ago for its own sake.I was able to connect the circular
vacuum hose to the rectangular port on the sander because of
a flexible rubber sleeve which was included in the bottom
of the sander box, like an apology.

I didn't even have the right kind of sanding disks.Mine have
    six holes.The Fein uses 8-holed paper.So I punched new
holes in it.I cannot imagine that this is ideal.

Yet -- there is no dust.I sanded a large oak double door
on both sides, an operation I have been fearing for months,
and not only was the result dustless, it was done in half the
time I expected. This sander is mighty fast.To me it felt
like both passes (220 grit and 320) were done just about as
fast as I could move the sander over the surface.

It has two speeds: "on" and "off".It does vibrate a noticable
amount, but not at all objectionably. It's loud enough that
I think I should wear hearing protection, but not so loud
that I will actually walk downstairs to *get* my hearing
    protection.

There is no more hyperfine dust on the inside of my eyeglasses
after sanding, which means I'm not breathing it in.I like oak
    everywhere except in my lungs.

Buy this and the Fein vacuum, preferably with the HEPA filter,
and throw your other sanders away before they make you sick.
Lungs are more expensive than sanders.

This has got to be the best sander/vacuum combination in the
    world.(Because Festool doesn't have a HEPA vacuum yet. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Amazing!
If you do woodworking, you know that sanding is the most dreadful part of any project.Sanding is usually a dirty, dusty, and unhealthy job. When my last random-orbit sander got worn out, I replaced it with the 6" Fein MSF636-1.I also bought the Fein Turbo II dust collector to go with it.I am so impressed, I just had to sing its praises...

I have been through several random-orbit sanders -- DeWalt, two from Bosch, Makita, Porter+Cable, and others.Always, when I'm done sanding, my hair and face, and all surfaces in the shop, are covered in dust. For days afterwards, I have to vacuum up the dust. The dust flies around, the dust is all over my work clothes, the dust makes its way from my shop into the house. It is dirty and it is unhealthy -- it is very dangerous to breathe fine dust particles.

When I bought this sander, I figured that "dust free" meant less dust.I thought it would just be an improvement over my other sanders. Not so!With this sander, dust free really means dust free. With the Fein sander, attached to the Fein Turbo II dust collector, there is absolutely no dust in the air at all!I have a bright shop light right over my sanding table, and after I am done sanding I cannot see anything floating around in there.Definitely close to 100% dust collection.

The Fein sander is an aggressive machine, and at first you might be surprised at how much material it removes in a short time. There is an adjustment period when switching to this machine from other ROS, but it is a nice thing to adjust to.Also, I should say that this is a heavy machine, definitely heavier than other ROS I've used. But it does a beautiful job.I've used it on grits from 40 up to 400, and it is easy to control and very well balanced.

One definite minus is that Fein includes no instructions.I know that a sander is a pretty simple machine, but there are a couple of items in the box that didn't make sense to me right away, and it's nice to have instructions to make you feel confident you're doing things correctly.

The bottom line is, I no longer dread sanding.I actually look forward to the sanding phase of my wood projects now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome sander, but...
I just got this sander, and have been able to use it on some red oak.By far this is the best ROS I have ever used - and I have many hours logged with ROS.This sander can be very aggressive, but it is very easy to control, and gives very precise action.I put most of my 220 lbs. on it and it didn't chock for a second. There was almost no vibration, and my hands did not tingle after a few hours of use. Also, I have never seen better dust extraction.PERIOD!

Now to why it did not get 5 stars from me.

    1) No case.At this price you think you would get a case.
    2) Poor doccumentation.Mine came with two manuals. Both were safety oriented, and not use or operation oriented.
    3) The dust collection outlet is propietary. It is an odd shaped rectange, forcing you to use a hard to find Fein adapter, or make one yourself.
    4) Cost.

However, because of the preformance of this unit, I mostlyhave been able to overlook these problems.I am thinking of buying their 8" model next. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Looking right out of the Jetsons' household, Fein's Turbo II vacuum is one the most effective on the market. With features like automatic start and dust-sealed switches, it's specifically designed to work with shaping, routing, or sanding tools, which create a lot of dust. It's also as quiet as any shop vacuum we've heard, making it easier to use in close proximity to a project, or in an enclosed space, and its internal fabric boot helps keep dust to a minimum. The Turbo II has a 7.3-gallon solid capacity, a 6.8-gallon liquid capacity, and a 1,300-watt, 9-1/2 amp, two-stage motor. Its size and sturdy rollers make it very portable and easy to dump after being filled. Unlike some larger models, you'll still be able to lift and empty this vacuum by yourself. The body is solid plastic and will hold up well to wear. The shape of the vacuum makes it easy to move around a job site--there aren't any big handles or attachments sticking out (other then the hose) to get snagged when wheeling the vacuum around. Fein's Turbo II is--hands down--a very high-quality, very low-noise vacuum, well worth the investment for carpenters, woodworkers, and craftspeople. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Vacuum, Bad Waranty
I'm writing this messege with the intent of alerting users to some issues I just experienced with the Fein Model 9-55-13 vacuum.I"m not recommending against buying one, but I do think they should revisit their service policy.

I had my unit for about a year and a half.During that time I was genrealy very pleased with the unit in many respects. It had fantastic dust collection, a resonable foot print, and of course made a lot less noise than anything else.

A few days back it broke.I called Fein and was told that I had to send it into either Pitsburg or Hartford.I told them I was a contractor and needed an immediate replacement. The rep asked me if I wanted to buy a new one!

I sent an email.Below is the response (note he got my name wrong):

    Craig Morrison [cmorriso@feinus.com]
    Hi Vince,

I am not really sure how to respond to thie compliant, or even if we should. While I think our repair centers probably shouldn't throw repair estimates at our customers, and wait till they actually see the tool, I also don't believe that Sears, or any other manufacture would consider a "no-charge" replacement on a power tool that has been used for a year and half.

Contast this with Shopvac - 5 year waranty (and a cheap unit!)

(Note: I had a shopvac that was a few years old and they simply sent me out a new engine when it broke OVERNIGHT!!!)

Festool - 3 year waranty (this is what I replaced my Fein with)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Powerful and a Pain to Clean
I have had this vac for about three years now.I use it a lot when sanding and it does a nice job collecting dust so I don't have to wear a dust mask and I don't get covered with dust whensanding. My sanding discs last a lot longer when using the vac.
Cleaning the filter is a pain because I have to go outside with a nozzle and hose connected to my compressor.I blow the dust off the filter and it makes a huge cloud of dust outside and I have to hose down the residue on the ground.
The vacuum loses power as the filter becomes clogged. At first it was very quiet but after a while it became louder and louder and now is about as loud as any other shop vac.
The sucking power is not impressive. It has no more sucking power than my household vacuum. What is nice is that when you turn it on it doesn't blow a cloud of dust like other shop vacs. The small diameter hose clogs easy with small scraps. The acessories are extra and not cheap.

3-0 out of 5 stars FEIN Turbo almost a great product
I bought it for it's relatively low noise level - which it delivers.

It's hard to believe that a premium priced product like this would have some glaring shortcomings such as:

ON-OFF switch is concealed from view and the symmetrical design of the top gives no clue where it is every time you look to turn it on or off. I made a bandaid fix by placing a piece of tape on the top above the switch location - (-at this price?)

The casters must be smallest of any on the market and they are not guarded. Any obstruction on the floor such as an air hose or extension cord will stop them.

There is no built in provision for storing the powercord.

There is completely inadequate provision for storage of the vacuum hose. If at least one or two more wire formed brackets were included it would help a lot.

There is NO provision at all for storing any nozzles or hose extension.

These shortcomings will annoy every time the product is used - NOT GOOD.

This is a case of function being sacrificed at the altar of Industrial Design, yet so unnecessary and so easily avoidable.

Delta 50-868K 3-Speed Ambient Air Cleaner with Remote Control and Timer
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $328.75

    Editorial Review

Dust in the air is bad for your finishes and worse for your lungs, but this air cleaner from Delta takes care of the problem. You can suspend it from the ceiling or just stand it in your shop. Either way, with both of its two filters in place, this unit traps 91 percent of particles 1 micron in size (that’s one-millionth of a meter!). Three speeds and a remote control let you handle the dust however you’d like, but the best innovation might be the time-delay shut-off, so you can have the air cleaner doing its job after you’ve finished yours. The price is right for the home hobbyist, but this workhorse is powerful enough for the professional’s shop. It’s easy to assemble and will be working for you right away. Minimal maintenance will keep it working hard.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes my wife happy
I have my shop in the cellar & the dust used to drive my wife nuts. Got this unit & she hasn't said a word since! WORKS FOR ME!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dust filter and Vapor filter
I have used the charcoal filter and the dust filter. The dust filter is pretty good at knocking the dust out of the air after a few minutes. The charcoal vapor filter reduces the amount of vapor noticeable in the air. It's a little loud at full speed though. I think that it's a good filter and am glad I have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so quiet
I really enjoy a quiet shop with just a radio playing soft background music. Quiet is a relative term and compared to some things in the shop, the Delta air cleaner hanging four inches from the ceiling is quiet but the tools only run for the short time I am using them. I am glad it has a remote so I can turn it off easily when guests and customers come in.Even on low, it is too noisy to talk over.I have a vacuum system for the power tools and about the only time I use the cleaner is during heavy dust times like sweeping up the shop and an hour after I leave.

Mechanically, it works.I am going to try to make it quieter by wrapping it in foam but the major noise is coming from both intake and exhaust. ... Read more

    JET JBM-5 / 708580 Benchtop Mortiser

    Editorial Review

For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines, including this one to the tune of almost $2400.Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts.Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw.I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99.I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation.I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine For the Money
You cant really go wrong here with this mortise machine.I read all the reviews prior to buying this machine about the shipping damage and was holding my breath hopeing mine would make it in one piece but I have to say the packing could use some work. The cast iron base was cracked about 4 inches when it arrived.I called Jet and they sent one out UPS ground right away with no problems. The only other problem I found with the machine is the fence is not straight. Its off about 3/16 inch or better on alignment due to the hole not being bored straight through the body of the machine during manufacture.I cut some really nice mortise joints through some red oak and the machine works very good. The bits that came with it are very sharp and seem to function great.Would have gave it 5 stars if not for the fence problem. All in all not bad for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the hobbyist
I've built several projects with this mortiser over the past year.It has done a great job.The stop mechanism works great, it's sturdy, and the chisels that come with it are plenty sharp.I've built about 4 tables with this machine, and I am currently building a cabinetmaker's bench, which requires me to bore mortises about 3 inches deep.Since I am using poplar for my base it didn't bog down the motor like maple would, however, the base wasn't wide enough to accomodate the large legs.No biggie:Rockler sells an extension table for this model that I am considering buying.

I wish they would have included mounting hardware (like my Delta drill press), so that I could mount it without any further trips to the hardware store. ... Read more

I received this saw in mid August.I was and still am impressed. It's heavy and quiet. I did replace the blade with a Timber Wolf and it works like a dream. The instruction mannual does leave a LOT to be desired.Whoever wrote it obviously was hired through nepotism and not for hands on knowledge. But with some page flipping and common sense it does go toegther. It can be seen that PM did employquality control on this piece of equipment.I also got the PM mobile base for the saw, it was well worth the $$$.I'll wait about a year and update this review as time will tell how this "baby" holds up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding saw - the top 14" choice under $1000
This is anoutstanding piece of woodworking machinery.Other than a few unclear illustrations, I had no assembly issues & was able to get it set up, rewired for 220V, and dialed-in by myself in a few hours. It's heavy, but it was not very hard getting the saw onto the stand alone.I also installed the riser block to increase resaw capacity which I highly recommend. The upper arm of the saw is heavy & hard to get a good place to get a grip, so it took a little muscling to get the riser block installed."Goof-Off" (available in local home centers & hardware stores) worked well to remove the anti-rust shipping coating on the tables. As you might expect, the "included" blade is junk.

I seriously considered the Laguna 14SE but could not justify the additional $400-500.I admit that I probably over research before buying machines for my shop.Check out the Delta, Grizzly, Jet, Bridgewood, and others. On the Powermatic, the fit & finish is way above the competition.Power, weight of castings, weight/design of flywheels... the list goes on and the Powermatic gets the points - this is a top choice among 14" bandsaws.

Power is NOT an issue. The Baldor motor is a tank.It runs very quietly - the sound makes you realize that you're about to operate a real piece of equipment.Roller blade guides take a little setting up when you change blades, guard height, etc. but they work very well.Dust collection is also very good.Fence is dead on accurate and tables are machined to near perfection.Carter quick tension release is fantastic!Chip blower works as it should.

As mentioned by another reviewer, if you rewire the motor to 220V you will need a 220V bulb... Philips 50A RS 250V available at mscdirect.com

The delivery/setup/operation of this machine has been a five star experience!THANKS to Amazon/ToolCrib, ABF Freight Systems & The WMH group for fine service and a fine product!

After having just pattern cut 10/4 white oak like it was 3/4" pine, a simple blade change/rentensioning for a Woodslicer resaw blade means it's time to go and make more 10" wide cherry into 1/32" veneer slices!

Go for the "gold standard."Buy it, you'll be happy you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, slight issues
I got this saw as an aniversary present from my wife and it is a great saw.Especially when compared to my 25 year old Craftsman 12" which I never particularly cared for.Unlike my wife who has always met or exceeded my expectations. It took me about 4 hours to assemble and I am usually a pretty handy guy.The instructions were a little confusing at many points and I had to study the picture carefully to follow along.I wish they had included a light bulb but otherwise, all the parts I needed were carefully packed and included. The setup and adjustment of the auxilary table is particulary fussy.Once the saw was set up, it runs like a top and is very smooth.I have only used it for a few days and I only have one complaint.the thumb screws for adjusting the roller bearings do not allow you to set the fence any closer than about two inches from the blade. If you raise the depth adjustment higher than the fence, you can accomplish this but I am use to setting the height just slightly higher than the board I am cutting. Also, the blower gets in the way of the miter guage if set low as well. The blade that comes with the saw is very cheap but I replaced it with a premium blade and it made the world of a difference.Overall a great saw with mediocre instructions. ... Editorial Review

While this JET saw beats its closest competitor on price, italso offers some advantages in terms of design and construction.Placing the quick-connect electrical plug right at the saw so the userdoesn't have to search out the wall socket for every blade change isjust one small example of JET's attention to detail. The stand for thissaw is made of a heavy-gauge metal, and features a hinged motor cover and a 4- inch dust port for easy connection to a dust-collection system. Achange in the hole pattern on the fence rails means lefties can shiftthe set up to their preference. The left-tilting arbor is another markin this saw's favor. Tilting the blade away from the fence negates theneed for a sacrificial fence and reduces the risk of the piece bindingunder the blade. This saw's most impressive feature is the smoothaction of the blade height-adjustment mechanism. Not only will userssave their wrists and knuckles, but they'll also save time by being able tocrank the blade to the exact height necessary with vastly fewer testruns for every rabbet, dado, tongue, and groove. Finally, we reallyappreciate JET's use of totally enclosed fan-cooled motors on this andevery other saw the company makes. While this may add a little to the finalcost of the saw, the extra life and reliability this gives the motorsis well worth it. This saw is an excellent choice in its price range.--Nancy Gleason ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Product Support
I'm afraid I have to agree with one of the other posts regarding poor warranty service. I purchased a the left tilt saw (along with an 18" bandsaw and dust collector) in November of 2004 and for almost 2 of the last 5 months it has been inoperable. Initially I phoned tech support to report that the motor stopped and they speculated that it was a problem with the start capacitor. They sent a new one and I installed it but the motor still did not work. At their instruction I did some diassembly anddetermined that the windings of the motor were charred black so they said they would send me a new motor, however it wouldn't be available for more then a month. I phoned back the following day and asked if they could send a motor from a display model, new or used. The fellow I spoke to said he would "see what he could do" and call me back that day. He never called. When the motor finally became available I was assured that it would be shipped by 3 day air since it had been so long. It wasn't shipped as promised. I called only to find it out that it went by standard ground transportation. When it arrived I opened the boxonly to find that the 60+ pound motor had about a 1/2 of an inch of packing underneath it and consequently the fan housing was smashed into the fan and the mounting plate was bent. Futhermore they sent the wrong motor. I have a left tilt saw; they sent a right tilt motor, even though I provided the model number and the original motor tag (along with a special form they required). I phoned again, spoke to the same person and was told she would overnight a new motor. It's been 5 days and I'm still waiting. Obviously I'm a bit frustrated at this point hence the reason for my first ever product review. It may well be that the product is as good as any other companies but in reality it is only as good as the company that stands behind it and right now they're not very impressive. If you're going to be relying on this saw for your business I would recommend looking into another brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fine machine
I bought the Jet 10" saw and it is great. Plenty of power, I rip through 8/4 maple and cherry like butter. The finish is great, The assembly was a piece of cake. Just the slightest little bit of adjustment in the fence was needed. I didn't spend more than 5 minutes adjusting the saw, Delta should learn a little from them. As far as the fine adment on the fence, well it is just easier to tap the fince with your fist to move it 1/32 of an inch. Maybe I am just old school... I considered heavly between the Delta and the Jet but I am glad I got the Jet. There is nothing that irratates me more is than when you spend $1500 or more and nothing is in line.... I will buy other jet products.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ain't no Powermatic
I'm a professional carpenter/cabinet builder working in the field for over 20 years.I've used every kind of table saw out there: Powermatics, Unisaws, Olivers, Grizzleys, Generals, saws without labels, European saws with unpronounceable names, way too many hours pushing wood through a saw.I needed a new saw for a small shop space I'm setting up and picked the 10" jet cabinet saw (JTAS-10XL50.)I figured it was pretty much the same as a Powermatic and would save me $500.I doesn't matter to me who's label is on the front, nor how shiny the top, just how it works.

The first saw I received (after having to bring it the final 300 yards to the shop door from were it was left in the street, so much for the $25 extra delivery fee) was broken. It had been dropped or hit on the bevel-adjusting shaft, which broke off the 90-degree stop portion of the front trunnion. It may have been a shipping problem, but it was caused by improper crating- the shaft had no protection.

Two weeks latter (returns aren't handled with any special urgency) I got another saw. This one has vibrations that come into the saw blade and leave a rough cut.Jet's remedy is to keep taking pieces off and getting replacements from Tool Crib till the problem is gone.

Four days after calling in the replacement of a motor, two pulleys, three belts and some odds and ends Toll Crib still can't tell me when the parts will even ship. When and if the parts ever do arrive I'll be surprised if they fit and even more surprised if there is any improvement in performance.

The saw has another major problem; the fence is junk. The support rails and guild rail all are bent. When bolted together (with the use of clamps) I got them straighter, but then the fence it self is twisted and curved too.It looks like one pass over the jointer would fix it- hard to do with steel.

If Tool Crib/Jet can get me the parts I need to make this thing work well, I will look at it as a mistake, but an old lesson re-learned.If they can't, they are getting it back and I'll buy a proper saw from someone, anyone, else.

Pay extra and buy quality, it will always save you money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the avocational woodworker
I bought this for exactly the reasons Delta lists: I find their 8" drill press too small for any useful work, but the 12" is overpriced for what you get.So I bought the 10".I've owned it for a few months now and have used it extensively. It has plenty of power - all but the largest forstner bits in all but the hardest wood cut smoothly and cleanly with this press. My only real compaint is the difficulty of adjusting the angle of the table - it requires a wrench and is fairly rough. However, the depth-stop adjustment is smooth and elegant, the table height adjustment is adequate, and the speed changes (via belt changes) are quite simple once you've got the hang of it.Workmanship of the tool is excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for the Money
I bought the 10 inch because it is significantly less money than the 12 inch.It does everything that the manufacturer claims, and is a good deal. Its sturdy, and easy to assemble and to set up.The tilting table requires a wrench, but works fine. One word of caution-- while the mortising attachment will fit, there is not a lot of extra room.If you plan on doing a lot of mortising, buy the 12 inch. ... Editorial Review

Porter-Cable's 1-1/2-horsepower router is popular with woodworkers for good reason. It's reliable, powerful, and exceptionally smooth running--not to mention versatile. While you can get this great tool in a two-handle fixed base, plunge base, or D-handle configuration, this kit--which includes both the two-handle and the plunge base--is the best deal going. We really appreciate Porter-Cable's new autorelease collet, which prevents bits from getting frozen in the machine. It'd be great if Porter-Cable could come up with an alternative to needing two wrenches for a bit change, but this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the tool's overall quality. In fact, Porter-Cable's focus on simple, quality engineering is the reason for this model's long-lasting success. The router doesn't offer electronic variable-speed control or enough power to effectively double as a shaper, but it is among the smoothest-running routers we've tried, producing consistently clean results. For most applications it offers all the versatility and muscle you need. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I just purchased this router and have been greatly impressed. Sure, there may be better routers out there in terms of more HP or finer plunge adjustments and so forth, but they are alot more expensive. I've learned to be realistic with my tool buys. I'm not a contractor, carpenter or professional woodworker. That being said, I try to spend my money wisely on tools the fit my hobby - weekends spent in my little home shop building funiture (tables, bedframes, picture frames, etc.) for myself and friends.

That being said, this is really a great router. The double base is wonderful in that I know I won't have to purchase another router for a long time. I don't find swapping the bases to be that big a deal at all. Bits are easy to change in and out. The only thing that concerned me was that it was only 1 1/2 horsepower. I thought I should get a beefier router at 2 or 3 HP. But after using this router for several projects now, I have learned that 1 1/2 HP is clearly enough power for nearly any job out there. I've not had a single hiccup or hesitation. The motormoves through the wood like a knife through butter.

I've used this router for detail work, like cutting details into picture frames, and for grunt work, like etching out mortises for a bed frame, and it handled both with ease.

For all my fellow weekend warriors, I'd highly suggest this router.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Power Needed
I bought this Router and it worked just fine, until I had to do some real work.It lasted about 3 weeks.

I was routing a 1/2 inch wide by 3/4 deep rabit on a piece of red oak, using the router in a table.I had four bords to rout.I was almost done with the second board when the router started to make rude noises.A few seconds later, it just quit, leaving large amounts of ozone tainted air and a very frustrated user.

It turned out that both brushes were gone, totally burned away. One of the brush contacts on the spindle was entirely fused off.The router is now scrap.

I would buy, and am now, a router with more horsepower if you intend anythin else but occasional weekend work.Do not expect this router to last under anything other than ossasional use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great versatile tool, but has a few compromises
For home woodworkers, this is one of the best routers on the market. It allows you to permanently mount the fixed base into a table while still retaining the versatility of a plunge router. It's powerful, relatively free of vibration, and very well made.

One does make some compromises in choosing this over standalone plunge or fixed routers: most plunge routers (including PC's own dedicated 1.5 HP plunge router) have smoother action than this and more precise adjustments. The router is perfectly capable in this role however, and the average home woodworker will have no trouble with it as a plunge router.By contrast, this router is really excellent in a table: it's solid, quick to adjust, and relatively powerful. However, it doesn't have the power to drive the largest horizontal panel raiser bits, and to safely operate this router in a table you will need to buy a separate speed control.

I highly recommend Porter Cable routers; I think they are the best out there. If you're on a budget but still want a strong tool with lots of capabilities, this is absolutely the best choice. But if you have the money, buy the PC 3.25 HP fixed router for your table and buy the PC 1.5 HP plunge router for plunge work. ... Editorial Review

When it's time to step up to a bigger router, Porter-Cable's 7518 should be on your list of contenders. It has as powerful a motor as you can find on a router and a reputation for accuracy and dependability. It's designed to work with bits as large as 4 inches in diameter and has electronic soft start and five speeds, to ensure that you'll be able to use those giant panel cutters safely and smoothly. The large bit capacity also makes it a great poor man's shaper when mounted on a good router table. Like most of Porter-Cable's routers, this model features their autorelease collet system, which does a good job of eliminating the problem of frozen bits and the need for rapping on the collet to remove them. Of all the routers we've tried, Porter-Cable's are among those with the lowest vibration and cleanest cuts. One thing we wish Porter-Cable would improve on is the lack of a spindle lock, which means that two wrenches--and potential knuckle wracking--are involved in bit changes. But given that a router's real value is measured by the results it produces, we'd still recommend the 7518 as one of the best routers available and a great choice for any shop. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for table AND handheld routing
Don't be afraid to take this thing out of the table and use it in your bare hands!

This things works fabulously, both in the table and in my hands. For the table, it's a no brainer... this thing rocks and, being Porter-cable, you will NEVER have a hard time finding accessories. It is the standard.

About the hand-held use though:It's big, but the handles are great, makes getting a good grip on it super-easy.In fact, it's the most comfy fit to my hands that I've found (though I have not tried the Milwaukee 3.25hp router). Also, the weight, solidity, and power of the thing makes it such that it doesn't jump around and jerk like my lighter 1 3/4 HP Dewalt.Between its weight and power, it's actually a fantastic hand router, and cuts any wood (as a previous poster stated) "like butter".

I've used it for fairly delicate, precision work in tight areas as well and the really big stuff.Heck, The only time I've even made a bit chirp was when I was using a 2" long, 1/2" flush trim bit on the full thickness of solid 1.75" alder, and I was "trimming" just about the full diameter of the bit... that was just plain stupid of me.The router barely seemed to notice... the bit, however... well, it's resting in "piece(s)".

I would not necessarily want it as my only router in the shop.If it were my only one, I'd go with a 2 1/4 hybrid, because there are definitely times you do need something more manuverable for light trim work. But, if you have the option to buy two (or already have one) having a small packaged 1 3/4hp (or even PC's little 7/8"hp deal) partnered with this one, then you have a near unbeatable routing setup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for handheld work too
A lot of people have reviewed this router so I'll just add something new that I didn't see in other reviews. Many people are using this router primarily for router table work.I use it for handheld work too and find its considerable weight to be advantageous there, because it helps keep the router on top of the work. And it cuts like butter. Also the router's power seems to prevent the kind of sudden jumps that smaller motor routers are prone to.

5-0 out of 5 stars The industry standard
If you don't like horsepower and beefiness, than you may want to buy something else.On the other hand, if you want the toughest, most powerful router you can get, than this ones for you. This router was designed to be used in a router table with big bits. I have owned this router for 9 years. I make raised panel doors for a living. This tool has never failed me.I've been through three router tables, but only one router.Porter Cable could easily jack the price up on this router and it would have no problem selling. I own 7 routers. If I could only have one, it would be this one. ... Read more

Delta 22-560K 12-1/2" Portable Planer with Extra Knives and a Dust Chute--a $44.99 Value
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $349.99

    Editorial Review

When shopping for a portable planer, we recommend keeping two things in mind: performance and, to a lesser degree, transportability. Delta's 12-1/2-inch planer weighs only 65 pounds and packs small, so it doesn't break your back when you pick it up and takes up minimal space in a loaded truck. Performance is the real issue, however, and Delta's planer--constructed with a sturdy four-post design and a 15 amp, 120-volt motor--smoothes materials up to 12-1/2 inches wide and 6 inches thick to stain-ready quality. The unique threaded cutterhead lock quickly cranks tight (some competitors' models will loosen up over time), delivering impressive snipe control. Delta's planer has a feed rate of 26 feet per minute and can shave off up to 1/8 of an inch. But we are most impressed, frankly, by how easy it is to change blades. What used to be a major operation took us maybe four minutes. The double-edged blades remove easily, fit over machined posts, and automatically align. The process utilizes a little magnetic blade-removing tool that does require some finesse, but we caught on fast. The infeed and outfeed tables adjust, but they are noticeably shorter than DeWalt's--which means the Delta planer is more compact but offers slightly less support to the stock. All in all, however, this is an unquestionably solid purchase. And, as with any portable planer, really, a couple of roller stands will make a big difference in the shop. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Army Knives aren't the only useful tool from Switzerland
I recently purchased the C2 to replace craftsman plate joiner I have been using for for some time. The craftsman did a reasonable job cutting slots for face frames and glue-ups.My two major complaints with it were:
1)I always had trouble keeping it from "walking" when putting a slot into the center of a large flat surface.
2)It seemed so clunky and for lack of a better term: "lacked elegence" (meaning it didn't seem manufactured to fit the contours of a human hand)

The C2 answers both of these complaints very well. Its action is so smooth, it makes slot cutting almost effortless. Their are two very grippy rubber "feet" that restrict the joiner's tendancy to walk when cutting slots into the center of a horizontal surface. (Alot like the little rubber nubs on the dewalt)

The C2 has plenty of power to easily work with maple, oak, birch, or any other hardwood you put in front of it. It also fits so well in my hand, I can generally operate it one-handed.

Upon unpacking it, I immediately checked the accuracy of the positive stops on its swivel fence, and was happy to find they were dead on.

After ordering the C2, I realized that purchasing a swiss made tool could result in service/parts availability issues.Upon reading the included documentation, I was happy to discover that Lamello has a US service provider in Kingston, Mass.(Kingston just happens to border on the town I live in, which left me feeling much better about the C2's longevity).

I have been using the C2 for about 2 months (500 slots or so), and I have only one complaint.Rather than arriving with a form fitting case, the C2 arrived in a generic plastic tool box you could purcahse at a home center for $5 (of course a little transparent lamello sticker had been placed on the lid). This makes transporting the joiner more of a chore than it should be.I cut some foam inserts for the box to keep the tool from getting bashed during transport, but it would be so much easier to just to put the tool back into an appropriately molded case.

The C2 is the best plate joiner I have used, and was worth the premium price.I would actually rate 4.5 stars (as the cheapo case shouldn't merit a full point deduction).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
This is a great tool. It is very well made. The plunge-action is very smooth and preceise. The fense operates easily and the posistive stops is very accurate. It is quiet and the chip blow-out works well, goes out the righthand side of the tool. It is of course possible to attach it to your dust-extraction (might need some extras). I has 2 rubber pads on the front to prevent it from skiding, and it works fine, no skiding.
    A high quality tool !!

5-0 out of 5 stars I think well worth it
I am fairly picky and actually had both the Lamello and the Dewalt side by side to see if the latter was worth the extra. The DeWalt's fence is quicker to adjust, and is probably fine for many applications, but there was some noticeable play, and the Lamello had absolutely none. Also, the Dewalt fence is not quite as versatile, but requires less set-up. What convinced me to mail the DeWalt back and not the Lamello is that when cutting, the Lamello never skidded even when messing around with just one hand.. The Dewalt did skid some unless I paid attention to what I was doing. Also, the Lamello has a clutch, and cuts very smoothly, quietly, and is made with a significantly more metal than DeWalt. It is easy to see why it costs more. While I am sure people can do a fine job with even the least expensive model out there, the Lamello gives you quite a bit more for the extra money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Control
If you are really, really serious about using a router table for dovetails, finger joints, and all the other milling operations that require high precision, you will want to own one of the Incra woodworking systems. My personal choice was the 'Super' system, which is an Ultra system like this in combination with the Incra Wonder Fence. The advantage to that model is the split fence, but it you aren't into turning your router table into a miniature joiner than this version will suit you fine for considerably less.

The heart of the system is the LS Positioner, which controls the fence from a rock solid center rather than from the ends as do most fence systems. The LS position locks into 1/32" increments, which can then be adjusted by 1000th's of an inch. This is more precision than a woodworker might ever need, but it is nice to have available. Also included as the Incra stop and the right angle fixture. With all of this mounted on the 28" fence you have a milling machine capable of exotic work.

The LS Positioner holds what Incra calls templets. These are plastic strips that come market with all the positions to cut a particular joint pattern.Something like sophisticated story sticks. There are places to keep five of these active on the Positioner - this is to minimize switching.I suppose the idea seems a bit corny, but Incra has bet their reputation on these templets, and they really do work.

Two notes of warning - Incra calls this a 16" jig, but the truth is that is takes nearly 30" of machine to give you that 16" cutting width. In all likelihood you will have to build an extension to your routing table. In my case I wound up adding 12 inches of draw. And you want this to be a solid extension, since the jig and fence weigh an appreciable amount. And the learning curve for a jig with this many adjustments is pretty steep (this isn't helped by a terse manual).Expect to do a bit of experimenting before you are getting the best results possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fence and joinery system
I have owned this fence / jig for about three weeks now and have used it to make several boxes and one case.It is simply great.Everything written about it is true - it is very stable and repeatable.I did purchase the new metal installation bracket that holds the system off of the back end of the router table (in order to free up additional room on the table and not give it up to the tool - download the owner's manual and look at the installation versus your router table to see what I'm talking about). In addition to reading through the manual, I also suggest that you purchase the intro video, which more simply walks you through the setup and usage of the tool.In short, well done Incra!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool
I purchased this fence/jig because I just had to figure out how those outstanding double dovetails and box joints were made. I rec'd the jig within a week of my order. I have used the jig extensively on one of my router tables and it excells at every task I have put it through.

Initially, I installed the jig onto a router table with a shop made table insert, but the insert flexed ever so slightly and caused a slight misalignment of the dovetails. I cured this by building a seperate router table with no insert and just mounted the PC 690 base to the underside if the table. Since then, I can easily produce tight fitting dovetails in a matter of minutes, and highly decorative joints for all manner of small boxes in about 15 minutes, minus glue and clamp/sanding time.

I am absolutely satisfied and have helped another fried to discover the uses for this tool, he bought the twin linear a week later.

I have also used this at my table saw for ripping extremely thin lamination strips, and it allows you to move the fence after each cut, allowing you to cut from the outside of the workpiece, and to do this with precision to .001 or .002. I have proved this out with dial calipers and a micrometer.

I have not even begun to unlock all the potential of this tool, but if you want accuracy, and +/- 1/32 is not going to cut it, get this jig and amaze yourself and your woodworking friends.

I highly recommend the Project Book as a supplement to the included manual Master Library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Use it for what it was intended.
I've had the Midi for two years now and can't count the number of items I've turned!Ranging from pens/pencils to the maximunm size wood bowls it would take.Never a problem with power while turning bowls or platters.Obviously your tools must be SHARP, no matter what lathe you use.

For an entry level lathe I feel it can't be beat. When I upgrade to a larger more sophisticated unit, the Midi will still have a place in my shop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 46-250 Midi Lathe
I have used this lathe for nearly a year turning pens, bowls and
other small turnings without any real problems. The only complaint I have is that the tool rest nicks very easily and does not adjust to the large diameter (10 inch) turnings to give
proper spacing and support for the turning tool. My shops equipment is all Delta, including a 9" table saw/4" jointer that
the owners manual is dated 1958, which I can still get parts for.
That is one of the reasons that I buy Delta products. I would reccommend Delta products to anyone that is in the process of
    buying new woodworking machines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Mini Lathe Value
After carefully studying both the Jet JML 1014 Mini Lathe and the Delta 46-250 Midi Lathe, I decided to purchase the Delta.I'm glad I did. Both machines are well designed and very well made, but the Delta simply offers the best value for a quality lathe in this class. It is slightly larger and heavier than the Jet, which helps dampen vibration and enhances stability, especially when roughing out spindles and bowl blanks at slower speeds.Other advantages include more convenient belt access than the Jet for quicker and easier speed changes, and an available cast iron bed extension that increases the spindle capacity of this machine to 37 inches. The fit and finish on the Delta is excellent in spite of its Chinese origins (the Jet is made in Taiwan) and the layout of the machine indicates a greater attention to ergonomics than the Jet.None of this is meant to suggest that the Jet is an inferior machine.Quite the contrary, the Jet JML 1014 is a superbly made machine and a first-rate performer. It certainly will not disappoint anyone who purchases one.But at a price that is at least $30 higher than the Delta in most places, and with fewer conveniences, it simply doesn't offer the same value as the Delta.I do have one small beef with the Delta, however. For all the care and workmanship that obviously went into the design and manufacture of this machine, I'm disappointed that Delta chose to use plastic handles for the tool rest and motor tension adjustment bolts. These handles have a cheaper and flimsier feel than the cast metal handles that come with the Jet lathe, and they have the added disadvantage of being in places where they will receive plenty of wear and tear. Also, the headstock belt pulley cover on the Delta lathe, while more conveniently located than the one on the Jet, is made of a flimsy plastic and sports a large protruding knob that some turners might find annoying. I pay attention to small details like this when looking at Delta machines because my experience with Delta customer service in recent years has shown that replacement parts for their machines, even such small items as plastic knobs, are usually outrageously overpriced and at times difficult to obtain without lengthy delays due to backordering. If these parts break prematurely (as they are very apt to do), replacing them could be something of a nuisance.Still, with a two year product warranty, excellent fit and finish, superb performance, easy expandability and a price that beats their toughest competitor, this machine is simply the best value you're likely to find in a mid-size lathe. ... Milwaukee 0516-22 14.4-Volt 1/2" Driver/Drill 0-450/1450 RPM, T-Handle with Two Batteries, Charger & Case

    Editorial Review

The Power Plus battery pack is one of the highlights of Milwaukee's 14.4-volt cordless drill. The battery is reversible, which helps balance the tool for the user and also makes it easier to get into tight spots. The adjustable clutch is easy to use and gives you two speed ranges to choose from: low gear for more power (maximum: 390 inch-pounds of torque) when driving screws and high gear for more speed when drilling. There are also 20 different super precise clutch positions so you can match the torque to the application, minimizing the risk of stripping screws or breaking off heads. The thin, soft-grip handle seems to absorb some of the vibrations, making the drill comfortable both to hold and use. The 1/2-inch keyless chuck is a bonus feature, holding a larger bit than most of the 3/8-inch competition in the 14.4 market. The forward/reverse function takes some getting used to: it's a switch, as opposed to the more common two-sided buttons you find on most other brands, and depending on hand size can be a bit tricky to reach with your trigger hand. This is a great tool for either the professional or the serious do-it-yourselfer. Excellent work, Milwaukee. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars dead batteries
I purchased a Milwaukee 14.4 Power Plus (minus t-handle), almost 3 years ago.It came with the 2.4 amp hour batteries.Despite the rough use that I've subjected it to, the drill has performed flawlessly. However, 6 months ago I let the batteries run down (not keeping them on maintenance charge). To my disappointment, they would not take a charge. A month ago, I again tried to recharge them (leaving them in for as many as 10 hours). But the charger light would never come on.The voltage on both batteries read 0 volts.New batteries would cost me $70 each.So I figured, for a little more money, I would be just as well off to by a new drill and batteries together.First, however, I tried something "off-the-wall."I attached one of the dead batteries into the drill and inserted a short steel rod into the chuck.I inserted the other end of the steel rod (about 3/8"x 8") into my corded Milwaukee. I set one in "reverse" and the other in "forward" and held down on both triggers, running at about 500 rpms. After a few minutes, the turning motor charged the dead battery to over 6 volts I believe, which was more than enough for the charger to finally kick in and start charging. One battery now works great and the other is fair.I'm in no way recommending that this would be practical for everyone with dead batteries, which won't take a charge. But I figured that since I was all set to but a new one, what did I have to loose?

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment
This drill was my first, and last, Milwaukee tool purchase. It is just out of warranty, 1 year, and I have used it very little (maybe 15 battery charges). When it first arrived it had one bad battery.I received a replacement which is ok, but now the other battery is bad.I keep the batteries and charger indoors so I don't believe heat/cold are to blame. Also, the drill now has a noticeable burning smell whenever it is operated.

I have owned several other cordless drills and all of them performed better than this one.If you're looking to buy, I recommend you keep looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill
This is a great drill. I have used it for a variety of tasks since my recent purchase (only a month ago or so). It has been able to handle everything I have thrown at it (although I haven't needed to bore 2" holes or mix thin-set yet, but that is not why I purchased it). It's weight is fine for me, but my wife finds it a bit heavy. She is still able to use it for basic drilling, but prefers her 9.6V instead for driving sheetrock screws and the like. All in all, I am very happy with it, and the service I got from Amazon was top-notch. ... Read more
