4-0 out of 5 stars Over priced under powered
I obtained this saw from one of my Doctors hobby shop.I got it for $610.00.At this pice it is worth the money.I am a one man shop building custom furniture. It is great for matching pannels. It is underpowered for production.I was a tool and die maker with General Motors in the 60's.I took the saw apart and rebuilt it.There is no vibration and it cuts streight as an arrow. If you find a used one and need a dedicated resaw this one is great for the small shop. It shoud come with a 3hp motor and the price shoud be under $2,000 with all the guide attachments. The quality is top notch, no complaints in that department.I use a 3" carbide skip tooth blade on the saw.I never take it off.Happy Sawing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The resaw seems uderpowered at time, but overall a fine saw
I have owned the resaw for six months now. I have used the saw to resaw maple and birch. The saw cuts the 8" plus wood nicely. I knew the motor was underpowered when I bought the saw. My shop is a one man shop, with not many time restraints, so not to big a problem for me. The motor never stalls and the resaw runs smoothly

3-0 out of 5 stars Well Built But Underpowered
I have had my Hitachi bandsaw for about 4 years and have used it extensively to make bookmatched panels in addition to ripping boards in the rough. When properly set up and adjusted, it has performed well but I have found it to be frustratingly slow in its cut rate when resawing 8" to 10" wide walnut or hard maple boards. It does provide adequate tension for the 3 inch blade, being approximately 16000 psi when the adjustment is against the stop (blade manufacturers recommend a minimum of 15000 psi).Note, many bandsaws cannot attain proper tension with a resaw blade of even 1.0 inch width.

The pluses of the saw is that it is well made and easy to setup and adjust (provided that you know what you're doing). The minuses are its price and the fact that it is underpowered (the motor should be a 240 volt unit of at least 3 hp). ... Read more

Porter-Cable 743-K 7-1/4", 15 Amp Framer's Saw with Carrying Case (Blade on Left)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $157.19

    Editorial Review

Porter-Cable's 7-1/4-inch blade-left circular saw is an excellent choice for builders who want a saw with power (it has a 15 amp motor) but that's not as heavy or difficult to handle as a wormdrive saw (it weighs only 10-1/2 pounds). Traditionally, sidewinder saws have the blade on the right side, so most right-handers are accustomed to looking over the saw to sight a line. A left-side blade lets a left-hander cut the same way--and some right-handed users, especially those accustomed to using (blade-left) wormdrive saws, will also appreciate the better blade visibility such a saw affords. In the end, it's really just a matter of personal preference.

To lighten the saw, Porter-Cable used lightweight, durable magnesium--whichwon't crack or bend--for the blade guards and part of the housing. The saw'sstill tough, though; in fact, Porter-Cable boasts that this saw can sustain upto a 6-foot drop without damage. This saw also sports a very flat, very strongcast-magnesium table, too, with reinforced ribs that make it very difficult tobend or break. (Can someone tell us why some companies ruin a good saw by givingit a wimpy table?)

Porter-Cable took care of the details, too. The no-catch lip on the blade guardhelps ensure the guard won't catch on an edge at the beginning of a cut, and itkeeps a user's hands away from the retraction lever. The 360-degree adjustabletop dust nozzle lets you direct sawdust in any direction, and you can easilyattach a dust bag or a shop vac to collect the dust--a particularly handyfeature for a remodeler who wants to make a couple of cuts indoors withoutmaking a mess. There's also a clip on the top of the saw that lets you clamp thecord off to the side when you're cutting sheet material, so it's less likely todrag behind and snag the edge. A heavy-duty carrying case comes included, too, though it's a little tricky getting the saw to fit inside. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Light Weight, Great Balance
Great saw.I'm a righty and really like the left hand blade for visibility (especially cutting sheets). But what really sold me on this saw was the "feel".You can't pick this out from a spec sheet but you know it when you use the tool.Let me say that I'm normally a HUGE Milwaukee fan, so that's the first place I went when I needed a new saw. They looked great and had some nice features but then I tried one.For me, the grip and balance of the Porter Cable felt a lot better.

I also picked up a dust bag and was surprised at how well it worked. It's a little annoying hanging out there but it really catches a lot of dust (nice for working inside people's houses).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great saw AND great case
SAW - I bought this saw for building decks and doing residential remodeling. It has proven to be up to the task --- lightweight, powerful, and makes accurate cuts because I can see the blade's alignment with each cut. Overall, I agree with all the other positive reviews of the saw, so no need to repeat.

CASE - The reason I'm writing this review is that some other reviewers have commented about the case, that it's too small and doesn't have room for accessories like extra blades, the rip fence, and the dust bag...I say, please take another look. The folks at Porter Cable didn't make a great saw, only to have a mental lapse when designing the case. Perhaps the case design is just a bit too clever, and the otherwise great manual didn't give any clues as to how to get everything to fit. So, here goes:

Let's assume you have the saw, along with an extra blade or two, the rip fence, and the dust bag, all out of the case. Here's how to get them to easily fit:

    1) Blades - Notice the small post in the bottom of the case. It's 5/8" dia., just like it should be for blades, and about 1/3" tall --- good for storing at least two blades. Put the blades on the post.

    2) Saw - Put the saw in its normal place, sitting on the left and right "ramps" in the case bottom. Now, the saw holds the blades in place, so they can't get tossed around in there and nick the power cord.

    3) Stuff the power cord into the space behind the hand grip of the saw, and to the right of the motor housing.

    4) Rip fence - Place the rip fence horizontally across the motor housing, with the "T" end to the left, and the long bar toward the power cord. It's okay if one of the ends at the "T" points upward, because the lid has clearance for it when it's closed.

    5) Dust bag - Roll up the bag aound its internal wire frame, just like rolling up a windowshade. Then place the bag in the case, right along the front edge of the saw, between the case handle and the blade arbor. Orient the elbow end of the bag toward the left, so that it "turns the corner" around the dust chute end of the saw. Finally, the right end of the wire frame will need to be "tucked" into place inside the rim of the case bottom (bends the wire just slightly; don't worry, it snaps right back).

    6) Close the case lid. If everything is in place, nothing binds at all as the lid closes.

Well, if it sounds complicated, just do it once; it isn't. -Took me less than 20 seconds on my first try, and I wasn't even hurrying.

True, it would be nice if the case came with metal latches like Porter-Cable's Tiger Saw case. But, if the plastic latches ever break, I'll just cut them away and put metal latches on the case from a hardware store.

I like the high impact plastic case better than a metal one, because it absorbs shock better if dropped, and doesn't scratch up my truck bed and tool box, which would then begin rusting. Though I have the largest WeatherGuard saddle-style box, there's still only so much room in there, so the compact case helps.

Also, the storage of the blade wrench in the saw's handle is a nice touch.

Bottom line - The P-C 743K saw and case have been refined to near perfection, especially for the money, which is why I give them 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Woodworker
The Porter Cable 743K is the best circular saw on the market.

The main thing that sets this saw apart from the rest is the magnesium plate.Pick up any other brand and you'll find the bases are usually warped (even if they aren't, just one drop and they will be).The porter cable bases are straight everytime and are stronger than any other brand. The porter cable bases also slide accross materials very smoothly, other brands often catch on imperfections in the wood, not the porter cable.

I use my saw for precise rips and crosscuts (because I can't fit a table saw in my shop) so I need accurate and consistant cuts, this saw comes through everytime.I recommend buying a clampdown fence if you'll be doing a lot of rips and bevels that require table saw like accuracy, plus it's nice for routing and a host of other uses.

My only minor gripe is not with the tool itself. The case pretty lame. It's fine if you just want to store the tool in a safe place, but if you're doing any job-site toating you might want to invest in something that can fit your saw and it's accessories (like another blade) into one case.

I also recommend getting a Freud Diablo 40 tooth blade if you care about making clean cuts. The blade that mine came with is not bad, I use it to cut joists, decking, sheets, or whatever else that doesn't need a super clean cut.Freud makes my favorite blades and this one cuts like butter. It's also got thin kerfs (though it's still very very strong) so it takes less of your wood with it.Perfect match for this saw, rips purple heart and iron wood with ease.

I'd recommend looking at the 347K as well to see which side you like the blade on better.I thought that I wanted the blade right at first but after cutting a while with both (my work buddies happen to have both models, lucky me) I found that the blade left was actually better for a right hander like me.

The bottom line is you can't get a better saw for the money. This tool will be around as long as you're a woodworker (not sure how long if you're a serious framer, but I suspect it would last as long as any saw (including worm-drives) that you can buy).I got mind for ... $$ dollars at Home Depot (20% of all tools christmas sale) and it the best money I ever spent.Buy this saw.Five Stars. ... Editorial Review

This is a workhorse of a saw, and it definitely lives up to theSkil name (the company that invented these saws in the first place). This latest version of the famous Skil 77 takes all the power andtorque the original is known for and packs it into a lightweightmagnesium housing, bringing it down near the weight range of sidewindersaws. Grasping it by both handles, the saw balances well, and thenotches in the shoe give a good guide for 90- and 45-degree cuts. Ithas a 2-3/8-inch depth of cut at 90 degrees, and 1-15/16 inches at 45degrees. We liked the quick blade height adjustment mechanism and theangled wrench, which helps prevent skinned knuckles during bladechanges. We couldn't feel any difference in performance between thisSkil's 13 amp motor and others drawing 15 amps. Be prepared for aslight twist when you first flip the switch, but after that, it's asmooth machine made right here in the U.S. --Kris Jensen-VanHeste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reality Check
This review is based on having used this saw, a Makita 13 Amp Sidewinder Circular Saw 5007NBKX4 and the Dewalt 364K 7 1/4 "Sidewinder" Circular saw.

The Skil saw, as all the other reviewers have attested, is powerful and, because of its power, rewarding to use. However, it still has its limits. For example, I tried out all three circular saws on very, very GREEN hemlock 1x10 stock. Where there was "reaction wood", the wood tended to clamp closed as quickly as the cut was made. The Makita came to a complete standstill as the wood clamped down on the blade. The dewalt continued to spin, being among the most powerful of the sidewinders, but still could not be pushed through. With the Skil, on the first try, the blade came to a standstill as the engine continued to spin.

    We tightened the blade.

On the next try, the blade squealed like a stuck pig, spinning with more authority than the Dewalt, but still could not produce enough moxy to finish the cut (maybe if the board had been clamped, two of us could have forced the Skil through). All machines have their limits. Despite the other reviews, don't think that this saw will make you invincible.

That said, the three stars is for the shoddy shoe on the Skil saw. This is not a quality tool. Until Skil puts some serious thought into improving the shoe, save this saw for the butchering of 2X stock in big crews where production is paramount. The depth is difficult and inexact and the bevel gage is a joke. Worse yet, the shoe tends to warp on these tools (as was the case with the Skil saw I tried). It could not be relied on to make square cuts in our 4x stock.

Buy the Dewalt if you are only going to have one saw and can live without the testosterone rush of the Skil saw. The Dewalt has an excellent shoe. It's depth adjustment is easy, accurate and without rival. It's bevel gage is also unrivaled and easy to set and reset. (Accurately setting the bevel on the Skil saw will require a separate tool or jig.) The Dewalt has power *and* refinement.

If you are going to have two saws, however, then make the Skil saw your second. You will find a place for both.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool
Recently someone broke into my garage and stole all my power tools. My old circ saw wasn't great, and I used my miter saw or table saw much more than my circ saw.
The first replacement tool I bought was this - a friend has the DeWalt version of it, which I like, but after looking around I chose this over it.I made the right choice. As soon as I got it home I tested it by ripping some 2" thick hickory and oak scraps into chunks for grilling and it cut through them without a problem (I used to only use my table saw for this sort of thing). This is a great saw, and even though it is heavier than sidewinder saws the increased torque make it much easier to handle, and to me the weight of it helps it track accurately.Last weekend I was ripping a lot of 2 X 10s to a 35 degree angle and ended up just following the pencil line instead of clamping a fence onto the joists - the saw just feels right, and that makes it so much easier to make a good cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down the best
There are few things you can apply the thought "buy it once" to. This is one of them. I purchased a Makita worm drive saw prior to this one, because it was cheaper and Makita has done fairly well by me over the years. "I feel" the Makita is unsafe for random framing use because of it's harsh torque on startup and the fact that I remove the guards from my saws. It's a good saw, I used it for a few years, until I tried a friends Mag 77. I bought one the next day. I still use the Makita to cut concrete and asphault because I just can't bring myself to use the Skil for that, it has such a precision feeling and function about it.

Try the thin red Frued blades for ripping. They rock! Like buttah. It's like the saw has cruise control. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This is the barrel-grip version of Bosch's bestselling top-handle 1587 model. Many woodworkers prefer the barrel grip on this model, however, arguing that it's easier to cut scrolls and curves when the saw is pushed forward (as opposed to down). Aside from the difference in grip, this saw is much like its top-handle counterpart: the balance is superb, the 5 amp motor packs plenty of power, the foot plate tilts left and right (up to 45 degrees), and the base retracts for flush cutting. The tool-free blade-changing system also works well. Simply put, this a compact, powerful, well-designed saw--a perfect buy for users who prefer barrel grips. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful tool
Whether ripping straight lines through plywood or making intricate scroll cuts, this jigsaw performs flawlessly. The quality is apparent just by holding it your hand- it's one of those tools that will probably outlive it's owner...Knocking it because of the country of origin is a philosophical/political argument and says nothing about the actual quality of the tool.Bosch's industry best 3 year warranty and the positive comments from people who have actually used it speaks volumes though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Made in China, should be $10
Where is the savings?Pay a premium for an item made in China at a huge discount. That sounds like a good deal (no jobs left and no savings - sign me up for that program).I will return this "discounted" item asap; or better yet, use it as a hammer.

My quest begins for tools made in this country - such as Milwaukee orbital sawzall: good price, excellent tool, would have paid much more.I do not care if a tool(made here) costs three times as much as one made in China and I have to spend three weeks locating it!Tell that to your economics professor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made in China -- so what?
I first bought a DeWalt, and it was horrible -- tons of blade deflection, slow cutting, etc. Someone recommended the Bosch, and it was like night and day. This is the Cadillac of jigsaws! I've owned the top handle version for six years now, and I'm about to add the barrel grip to my collection.

To the reviewer who was shocked to discover that this "supposedly quality tool" was made in China (which has long been known as the PRC): did you really give this excellent tool one star simply due to its origin? My goodness, I'm going to love explaining this to my friends here in China... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Hitachi's' 8-1/2-inch sliding compound miter saw is a tried-and-true favorite with professionals, who value its solid construction and reliable accuracy. It has a 9-1/2 amp motor with an electric brake, 11 positive miter stops, and 4 positive stops on the bevel gauge. We like the big wide table, the hefty base construction, and the embossed numbers and markers of the miter gauge. While the sliding fence is clearly designed with easy adjustment in mind, it's less durable than we would like to see and not too tall. The blade guard operates smoothly and doesn't obstruct the visibility of the work--an improvement over previous versions that had a tendency to hang up. This saw was among the first sliding compound miter saws out, and its solid, reliable design hasn't changed much or lost popularity, even after several years on the market and a lot more competition. Due to its solid construction, it remains accurate after a long time on the job, making it a consistent favorite with professional trim carpenters and everyone else whose work depends on exactitude. People who want the accuracy this saw offers but need more thickness capacity and the convenience of a double-bevel saw may want to consider Hitachi's 10-inch sliding compound miter saw. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Saw!!!
I own a home remodeling business, and I've owned this saw for over 3 years. I have other miter saws that I use specifically as "chop" saws for rough framing duties; however, when I need to do finish work or flooring, I always reach for this saw. It is rock solid, durable and very accurate, and seems to be owned by every trim carpenter I know. Sure, 10", 12" and 15" miter saws are easier to use for fat crown mouldings, but who wants to lug those things around all week. For its versatility, portability, and overall quality...Get This Saw!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most 10" sliding compounds
I have used DeWalts 12" DW708 and Delta's Sidekick 10" slide compound and the Hitachi 10 slide compound.I have been building cabinets and doing a lot of finish carpentry for years. What I like about the smaller Hitachi 8.5", is that it does not have the "head flex" problem that some of these larger saws have when you slide them out on larger lumber or crown moulding.I can flex most 10" slide compounds almost 1/8" when all the way out. Most average consumers won't notice this. But when you are cutting 5 and 6 inch crown all day and you want peices to fit like laser accuracy, you need something with STABILITY, this is more important than all the fancy features. And the smaller Hitachi cuts the most accurate "crosscuts" I have ever experienced, the other saws tend to "kink" under their own power and start making their own line as you cut. If you want accuracy, BUY this saw.If all you care about is a big fence, table, etc... buy something else.

    Editorial Review

If you're looking for a low-cost, effective, reliable reciprocating saw,Porter-Cable's Tiger saw might be your best bet. It's among the lowest-priced professional-gradesaws on the market, but lacks none of the power and performance of its competitors. TheTiger saw features trigger-controlled variable speeds (0 to 2,600 spm), a powerful 11.5amp motor, and a 1-1/8-inch stroke length. It offers orbital cutting action (for fastercutting through wood), although you can turn that off when working with hardermaterials such as metal or plastic. The saw also features a tool-free quick-change chuck. While it does lack the vibration-dampening counterbalance found on more expensivesaws, this is a luxury feature most users can do without. The Tiger saw is plenty toughenough to make just about any cut, and it comes with Porter-Cable's reputation forreliability. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the Milwaukee
Let me start by saying that I purchased this saw a few days ago, used it for 1 job and have returned it for the Milwaukee 6521.The Milwaukee costs about $40 more but in my opinion it is well worth the investment.Buy it right, buy it once.As I have found in the past, Porter Cable tools typically have adequate power to perform the job but lack the finer details necessary to make them the top of the line tool. This saw is no different.

On a positive side, this saw has plenty of power and beef to demolish just about anything it touches. No doubt.Although I've seen some reviewers complain about long term issues with the keyless chuck, it seems like one of the best in it's class, especially if you keep your tools reasonably clean - a simple blow-off gun cleans it right up.The ability to flip the blade upside down came in really handy and operated without an issue.

Room for improvement. One of the most notable differences between the Milwaukee and the PC was the thrashing you get from the PC.The Milwaukee has a dampener (PC doesn't) which definitely makes a difference, especially when you have to use it for an extended period of time. The Milwaukee design is also much more comfortable in the hand - from the handle to the front grip, just a much nicer feel.

The second complaint I have is that the variable speed is controlled by the amount you depress the trigger. This is great for starting cuts but it doesn't provide a great deal of control throughout the cut. This goes back to the vibration of the saw - you're trying to control depression of the trigger while holding on for dear life. The Milwaukee allows you to set the maximum speed of the saw with a dial (at full trigger) and it also allows a slow controlled start using the VS trigger.

A few other minor details that really help the Milwaukee stand out are the keyless shoe adjustment (PC uses an allen key that is waiting to get lost) and the replaceable cord. The shoe on the Milwaukee also has a better pivot point and visibility. Spend the $40 and you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough, Versatile & Powerful.
Plenty of power. The blade change system is the best. A little weighty but overall not too bad.An excellent choice! The 9737 is tough, versatile & powerful.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Saw Can Take It - And Dish It Out
I've had this saw for about a year now, and it can definitely handle the work.Let me start by saying that I've never been a huge Porter Cable fan.Their tools are always tough enough, but usually lack the smaller "finesse" design features that some of the other brands seem to have.In other words, a perfect choice for a recip. saw.The blade change collar works great - a HUGE improvement over my old Milwaukee with the hex key. This saw powers through wood, nails, pipe without complaint. My only complaint is minor. The blade compartment in the plastic case doesn't hold long blades. How hard is it to mold a plastic case that can handle common parts?Overall, a great value for a saw with this much power. ... If you've always wanted to own Powermatic's model 66 table saw, but you've held off because of the space it demands, then take a close look at Powermatic's Special Edition 66, built with the home workshop in mind. This is a piece of shop equipment that makes a toolhound's heart beat faster. The eye-catching high-grade cast-iron top is machine-polished to a mirror finish. The saw's table--impressively thick and durable--has both a cast-iron wing extension and a laminated extension (total surface: 28 by 53-3/4 inches). With one of the heaviest cast-iron trunnions on any 10-inch saw on the market, the model 66 virtually snuffs out vibration. The double drive-belt system--hooked up to the burly 3-horsepower motor--delivers pretty astonishing power. A C-flange mount takes the weight of the motor, so the blade cranks up or down easily without the extra weight. The saw's hand wheels are also made of cast iron and have excellent clearance.

The heart of any table saw, arguably, is the fence--and Powermatic's Special Edition 66 sports the award-winning Accu-Fence, a system that uses only two moving parts to create easy-gliding, precision, no-budge fence action. The left-tilting blade tilts away from the fence, which helps prevent kickback and binding of the stock, making for smoother cuts. The two-sided blade guards work independently of each other, so the blade is always covered. The guards also swing totally out of the way to make blade changes easy. Behind the blade, there are antikickback pawls for added safety. The saw's base has a clean-out door, allowing you easy access to the saw body and making cleanup a snap--no reaching around the saw components or having to remove the motor cover. You'll also receive a load of extras, including a dado insert, a motor cover, and an extension table and legs. Admittedly, this isn't a cheap saw; without a doubt, however, it is an excellent one that would make a great addition to any shop. As with almost everything, you get what you pay for--in the case of Powermatic's Special Edition 66, you get a fantastic piece of equipment your friends will envy. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You need fine tools to build fine furniture....
and this is a fine tool.I have owned two 66's over the years and have yet to have a complaint.Thank goodness they are still being made. They are heavy, which makes them very stable, (be sure to have a lift truck deliver it). But, if you want to do accurate and fine woodworking you need this saw.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some assembly required
I have been wanting a Powermatic 66 for over 25 years but until now had to make do with a much cheaper table saw sold by a popular chain store/catalog outfit. That saw did the job, but shook like Elvis Presley and could not be properly adjusted.Well, I have my Powermatic now, and I'm very pleased, but putting it together has been frustrating.Buyers should be aware that they are really buying a "kit" - not only is some assembly required, but some correction of manufacturing faults may be needed. The first (and biggest) problem I encountered was that the left extension wing tilted up when bolted to the table, leaving a low spot of 0.02 inch when a Starrett straight edge was laid across the assembled table. Not good! The cause was that the left edge of the main table section was not ground square with the top.Correcting this bit of sloppiness required three hours of hand fitting with a machinist's scraper and square. The second principal difficulty was discovered after frustrating hour trying to mount the front rail according to instructions.I finally realized that it could not be done because of inadequate clearance in the mounting holes.Drilling and filing fixed this. The third problem had me baffled for awhile:With the blade tilt stops set accurately at 0 and 45 degrees, the pointer could be set to register correctly at 0 or 45, but not both! After some thought, I realized that the scale had been mounted too close to the pointer. This was corrected by drilling a new mounting hole for one of the screws.

After three days of work, the saw is finally up and running. It's been too much work, but I'm going to love this saw.On the plus side, I did not have to adjust the table to put the blade parallel with the miter gauge groove. Also, vibration is minimal.I can start the saw with a nickel balanced on edge (but not a penny). Most importantly, the trunions are pretty much dead on.Measuring from the same tooth to the miter gauge grove, the distance varies no more than 0.004 inch between front and back (blade all the way up) and middle (blade down). Also, using a Starrett machinist's square, perpendicularity between blade and miter gauge shows no perceptible change as the blade is raised or lowered. These tolerances are critical because poor machining could have created errors that cannot be adjusted out (as I had with my old saw). Now that the saw is together, my only remaining complaint is that there is a low frequency (2-3 second) harmonic noise of undetermined origin.I'm sure this is the best saw available for the money, but I would have gladly spent another $100-200 for just a little extra care in machining and assembly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch -- worth the expense
I ordered the saw a few weeks ago on Amazon.Delivery took a while, as the freight company had to lug it across the country. Finally scheduled the delivery -- freight company was very easy to deal with and put it on a liftgate truck with no hassles. You'll want this service, by the way -- unless you happen to have a forklift in your garage.

No surprise - The pallet is *heavy*. Took about an hour to uncrate and take off all the easy-to-remove weight. That leaves about 400 pounds.Tip: if you have to move it far (such as I did, down to a basement workshop), rent a handtruck like those used for moving refrigerators. With the handtruck and three guys, it was an easy move.

Pretty much everything was dead-on accurate out of the box.Once hooked up to power (remember you have to supply your own power cord), it cuts smoothly and cleanly. The trunion moves incredibly easily, especially considering its weight -- but doesn't budge once locked in place.

All in all, it was worth the wait (and the weight)! Highly recommended.

    Editorial Review

The first thing we look for in a table saw--portable or otherwise--is an accurate, smooth-working fence, and the telescoping fence on DeWalt's 10-inch portable table saw impressed us immediately. Fully extended, the fence delivers a 24-1/2-inch rip capacity, letting you cut to the center of a 4-by-8-foot sheet, while the rack-and-pinion design lets you make microadjustments fast and accurately. We also liked how the fence rides on both the front and back rails so that it's parallel to the blade at all times. The telescoping rails retract, too--when the job's done, the saw is easy and safe to transport.

Like most 10-inch portable saws, DeWalt's has a 3-1/8-inch depth capacity at 90 degrees and a 2-1/4-inch capacity at 45. The 15 amp motor cranks plenty of torque and doesn't lag when cutting hardwood or pressure-treated stock. Performance aside, DeWalt clearly also kept safety in mind when designing this saw. Its oversize on/off switch is positioned so you can easily bump it off with your knee if you get into trouble making a cut. The arbor on Dewalt's saw also has the capacity for a full dado stack. Add to that the saw's dust-collection hookup and sturdy steel stand, and you've got a portable table saw that can hold its own in the shop. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This saw is so awesome !!
After using this saw for only a few hours, I am so in love with it !! It is well worth the money. I do think that for the price Dewalt should include the outfeed support. I also would have preferred a 4" dust port, but hey, you can't have everything.
The rack and pinion fence is right on the money. Dewalt has done it again. They make good stuff !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw
It's light, easy to use and the rip fence on gear tracks is excellent. No place to wind the cord is kinda crappy, and the blade angle adjustment slides rather than having something like the knob used for the rip fence for adjustments. The frying pan coating on top doesn't last long if you don't wipe it down with some WD-40 once in a while. I've used it as a jobsite saw and to build cabinets, speaker boxes, cut plexiglass, etc. It's not a $1500 cabinet saw but if you screw a sheet of plywood to a couple sawhorses as a outfeed table and take some care in your cuts, it works awesome for something one person can carry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic saw for its class
I've had this saw for a year now.I have a small shop and didn't want to sacrifice the permanent square footage for a stationary cabinet model. So I was only looking for a portable...but a good portable.I am not a professional in any trade, but am a very seasoned DIY'er, particularly with woodworking.I've made a few pieces of furniture with the saw and I don't regret its purchase at all. Here are my thoughts on this item:

    POSITIVES

    1) Portability, portability, portability.I usually have it set up on the leg stand in my shop, buy have needed to transport it mutliple times either inside my house or to other sites I worked at.

    2) The 15 amp motor is impressively beefy, considering it is a portable, and cuts quite nicely through any wood I've tried so far (including oak and birch).

    3) The folding legs are easy to set up and EXTREMELY sturdy when the saw is on and properly bolted on (bolts are not included though...)

    4) The fence is great.Easily adjusts and stays true and parallel (a minor flaw though...see below).

    NEGATIVES

    1) When saw dust gets built up on the pinion gears for the fence adjusting mechanism, the gear(s) sometimes slip over one tooth and the fence gets out of parallel. However, you'll easily know when it happens (if you don't notice it by eye, you'll quickly notice the wood binding up in the blade!)However, it is a quick and easy fix by hand to put it back parallel...and impetus to keep your tools clean.

    2) The blade guard is relatively cheaply built and a nuisance. Although it is a cardinal sin, I never use the guard.

    3) The open ended arbor wrench stripped open a little bit after a few months of moderate use.I switched a lot between a ripping, cross cutting and dado blades when making two pieces of furniture. The mouth on the open ended wrench seemed to have stretched out a little and would slip off the arbor when I was trying to tighten/loosen the arbor nut. After banging up my knuckles a few times, I ordered a new wrench from the DeWalt service center near me (only costs about $2).Unfortunately, a normal open-ended wrench is too wide to fit in...you need to use the thin DeWalt wrench.

    4) The combo blade that comes with it is relatively cheap. It cuts fine through most woods, but leaves blade marks. Also, there is more splintering/tearing than I would like when cutting through plywood.I highly recommend splurging on a Forrest Woodworker II blade and dampener.Flawless cuts on this was with the Forrest blade.

Overall, I absolutely love this tool. The price seems high (and sort of is considering it is portable), but the DeWalt quality is worth it compared to the much cheaper Ryobi and Makita models. The negatives I have listed are fairly minor; mere nuisances with easy fixes.Be sure to check the fine tuning of the fence width ruler and parallelness of the fence.I had to tweak them a little before I first used the saw to get everything just right. If you need portability and want to save space but don't want to sacrifice a lot of the benefits of a cabinet saw, this tool is a must! ... I chose this as my first string 1/2 inch drill over the Milwaukee Magnum models because of brand loyalty and because it's lighter with better ergonomics. Simply put, this Porter Cable drill will match any Milwaukee Magnum drill in performance, but you can grip it better and it doesn't wear you out to use it all day. Porter Cable doesn't mess around offering ump-teen different drills. They just make a basic "one size fits all" model that will meet all needs and they do it darn well. I only wish Porter Cable could put a quick lock removable cord on their drills like Milwaukee does, but that feature is patented. I have the 3/8 inch drill from Porter Cable as well. What a team they make!

Arguably the best portable model on the market. To best minimize snipe, Makita came up with an innovative four-column design and fortified it with diagonal cross supports to stabilize the cutterhead while the patented Interna-Lok cutterhead depth adjustment secures the head while cutting. We particularly like how easy it is to adjust the depth scale and gauge. The depth stop makes sure you never overplane multiple pieces. The infeed and outfeed tables are supersized - another little perk we liked. Often, changing planer knives is an ordeal, but Makita's quick-change system and externally accessible brushes minimize your maintenance time and get you back to what you really love doing. The unit is relatively lightweight as these machines go, and at 83 decibels, is among the quietest of its kind. Still, please use ear protection when you're using this little beauty. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't be disapointed
I've used the 12" delta - way to noisy. Bought the Makita right after christmas - 4 months now - I love this tool. You can plane down to about 1/10" - walnut, oak, maple have all done great.

A good shop vac keeps up with the chips (do get the vaccuum attachment). Snipe seems to have gotten better as I use it more. Oh and did I mention quiet?

This is a really nice tool.

I've been a woodworker for 20 years, have a range of tools from a old craftsman table saw to a new Delta 14" bandsaw... the fit and finish on the planer is second to none...

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Planer , Minimal Snipe
I have had this planer for about two years now.I have used many different planers including a 20" Jet floor model. If I was to buy a portable planer today I would consider the New DeWalt 13" planer.I looked it over and I liked the adjustment wheel and the fact that it has three knives instead of two. I haven't used it though.
The makita is relatively quiet but you still should use ear protection. The dust collection needs a pro system because my Fein Turbo II vac was too underpowered to collect the dust without clogging. The knives were easy to change. That was a relief because it can be a pain on some of the other planers. They are reversible so you can change edges once but then you have to buy new ones because they are not sharpenable.
The table needs frequent cleaning especially if you use pine or other sappy wood.I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the rollers and citris cleaner to clean the knives. Without frequent cleaning the feed rollers will not work. That is a problem on all planers and not a fault of the Makita.
The finish is nice and smooth and only needs a little RO disc sanding starting with 150 grit to clean up the tool marks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will expand your shop capabilities
First of all, let me just say a word or two about any portable planer. I only use tropical hardwoods, and I've cut through the hardest with this planer. With a sharpened blade, these 15 amp babies can eat through chainsaw-cut planks quite efficiently. The key is keeping the blade sharp, and for that I would recommend the sharpener from Woodworker's Supply because you need not even take the blade off with their angled stone. Don't even think of buying a planer without a sharpening tool, because if you do not have one you will be cutting slow and wearing down what is left of your blade. Benchtop planers cut smooth, and expand your shop capabilities. For me, this is a "must" tool.

Now about the Makita. This is my third planer, my previous two being a Ryobi and a Delta. This one is by far my favorite--quiet and solid, with less snipe. A real key to long life in a planer is keeping the shavings out of the mechanics. This is what caused my previous two planers to break down. The Makita has gone on for 3 years now without a hint of a problem. It has a handy thickness adjustment so you can return to cut multiple planks at the same thickness. Editorial Review

Though this Porter-Cable tool is priced higher than comparable DeWalt and Makita models, the 557K is Amazon.com's top-selling plate joiner. Its success is perhaps due to its very powerful 7-1/2 amp motor--the largest in the industry--which turns the blade at 10,000 rpm and does an excellent job of making clean cuts in any kind of wood. As well as cutting slots for the standard no. 0, 10, and 20 biscuits, Porter-Cable's joiner features an exclusive, full-thickness, FF biscuit developed especially for cabinet face frames. Another unique feature of the Porter-Cable joiner is the 2-inch blade (included), which is small enough to make cuts in stock as narrow as 1-1/2 inches. We found the micro height adjustment works well, allowing for precise biscuit placement. The tool is well balanced and comfortable to use. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A lion of a machine with the personality of a lamb, thePorter-Cable 97529 packs an extra-heavy-duty 12 amp motor with a supersoft start and an electronic brake that slows the bit to a stop andreduces the chance of injury. Your neighbors will like this machine, too, as it runs far quieter than almost any other router we've evertried. It's a dream for handheld use--it won't pull you around theblock as it's getting even the big jobs done--though the grips may betoo big for folks with small hands. What makes this router a winner isthat it's just as great in a router table, and that's unusual for aplunge. It has an advanced micro height adjustment for changes of 1/128of an inch, even in your table. Free hand, the adjustment is your depthstop for plunging--the rod's tip offers multiple stops, and you don'teven have to let go of the handles. Porter-Cable also includes a clearchip deflector, a trigger-lock on/off switch, and a master switch. Thevariable-speed dial on top is a cinch to use, from 10,000 to 23,000rpm. Another feature high on our list is the dust collection port. Thiskit includes a hard case with room for bits and an edge guide.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good machine, but...
I have to agree with many of the other reviewers who like this router for its smoothness, power, and low noise level. The grips are great, it plunges nicely, and the quality of materials seems top rate. However, my experience with this router has revealed two flaws that greatly detract from what would otherwise be a truly fine machine. While these flaws are not necessarily deal-breakers, those of you who are considering buying this tool may want to be aware of them.

First, as another reviewer has pointed out, it is impossible to accurately center template guides within the base plate. The user must screw the template guide holder into the baseplate, and since the holder does not precisely register into the baseplate, it is thus extremely difficult to accurately center the guides. If you use template guides and require even a moderate degree of accuracy, this flaw is a deal-breaker. Do not buy this router. On the other hand, if you never use template guides or plan on parking this baby in a router table, you'll have no problems. This would be a fine router for those purposes.

The other problem is another quality/design issue that can be remedied but is a moderate annoyance. On my machine, the release/locking lever for the plunge mechanism came loose on several occassions, making it impossible to plunge and lock the router at a desired depth. There is a small set screw in the lever mechanism that works loose and has to be constantlytightened and adjusted. This problem is not an isolated incident as it also has occured with two other cabinetmakers and their identical routers in my shop. In the end, having tired of constantly fiddling with our machines, the three of us adjusted the mechanisms as best we could, applied Lock-Tite to the set screws, and hoped we did it right because there would be no way to disassemble the levers once the Lock-Tite cured. Fortunately, the fix worked fine, and all three of us are happily using our machines without any problems. Again, not a deal-breaker and the problem was fixed, but this seems unnecessary for a $200 router.

The other router to consider in this price range is the DeWalt DW625 3 HP plunge router. Though it has more power than the PC 8529, it is the same size and weight. It's also variable speed and would be great in a router table. I've never been a huge DeWalt fan (many of their products seem overrated and overpriced), this seems to be an excellent machine. Several of the guys in my shop own them and use them for the dual purposes of plunge operations as well as major hogging through lots of material (the extra hp makes a big difference). Add it to your list of possibilities.

1-0 out of 5 stars SHAME ON YOU PORTER CABLE
PORTER CABLE REALLY BLEW IT ON THIS ONE.THE SWITCH WENT OUT IN THE FIRST 10 MINUTES.A YEAR AND A HALF LATER IT IS DEAD, WAITING FOR ITS FOURTH SWITCH.IN ADDITION TO THE SWITCH FAILURES, THE SWITCH LOCKING MECHANISM IS VERY AWKWARD AND IS PRONE TO FAIURE.
THE ROUTER IS ALSO UNDERPOWERED.THIS ROUTER STALLS OUT ON PROJECTS THAT MY 1-1/2 HP CRAFTSMAN BREEZES THROUGH.THE PLUNGE MECH CONSTANTLY STICKS AND THE MICROADJUST NEVER WORKED.
THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT ANY BETTER. THEY HAVE YET TO RETURN MY PHONE CALLS OR E-MAILS.MY NEXT ROUTER WILL DEFINATELY NOT BE A PORTER CABLE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!
I was very disappointed with Porter Cable. The plunge mechanism sticks, the on button is hard to lock on for router table use, the depth gauge is extremely hard to use, and it is not compatible with most after-market accessories.Mine is sitting on a shelf. In its place is a DeWalt 621 plunge router. It is lighter, has a much better depth gauge and is just better all around.I love my DeWalt 621.I wish I had bought it first. ... Editorial Review

Porter-Cable's 1-3/4-horsepower router is popular with woodworkers for good reason. It's reliable, powerful, and exceptionally smooth running--not to mention versatile. Although the 691 comes with a D-handle base, the motor is interchangeable with Porter-Cable's excellent plunge base or two-handle fixed base. Both matching bases are available separately for much less than the cost of a new router, and switching bases for different applications is a quick and easy operation.

We really appreciate Porter-Cable's new autorelease collet design, which prevents bits from getting frozen in the machine. It'd be great if Porter-Cable could come up with an alternative to needing two wrenches for a bit change, but this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the tool's overall quality. In fact, Porter-Cable's focus on simple, quality engineering is the reason for this model's long-lasting success. The router doesn't offer electronic variable-speed control or enough power to effectively double as a shaper, but it is among the smoothest-running routers we've tried, producing consistently clean results. For most applications it offers all the versatility and muscle you could ask for. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars the base for these are useless
i haved used at least 5 of these routers and they work great right out of the box but the base becomes warped very quickly making it difficult to router properly especialy with flush cuting bits i have 6 years of full time wood working experiance and the last time i used one i messed up flush cuting because the base was not flat i would by the Bosch 1618B if u plan on using the router more than a few times because of the superior base

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Router
This router is great for a first or only router because of its versatility. You can buy a plunge base if you need it, but i dont really care for it too much but it is cheaper than a new diecent router. The dhandle is a great feature it gives you alot more contol than just the two knobs found on most routers.1 1/2 hp is pleanty of power for most applications. The collet i dont mind but use real wrenches, the ones in the kit are cheap and tend to cut your fingers especially if the bit is in there really tight. The 690 series is the most popular router, many other accesories are avalible, which make it even more versitle. If this is your 1st router of your 50th, you have to have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use it all day long.
This is a wonderful router. We have made blind, taporing, dovetail socket routs, and parts to match. With this router we wiz right through the ladder rails and rungs with no complaints from this router.I just wish that the bits would keep up with the router. The "D" handle is just the perfect size, and the locking trigger is perfect for all of the routing that we do. The only complaint that i would have with this, and this is with every router I have ever come to research, and use, is that you can not hook up a vacume source anywhere on the router.Luckily i work in a wood shop with my father, and he is definatly from the "old school" and we designed a great design for that. Thanks Porter Cable, Daniel Kroeker Juniata, Nebraska GO HUSKERS!! ... We didn't want to put this one down, and that's not our usualreaction to a belt sander. But we would have happily refinished ahardwood floor with Porter-Cable's 4-inch belt sander. It feels greatin your hands thanks to the attention Porter-Cable paid to ergonomics. The front grip is perfect and the handle is comfortable, with the speedcontrol perfectly positioned for on-the-fly changes. It's heavy, butthe weight of the 12 amp motor is centered right over the platen, sothe balance is perfect and you can let this hummer do the work for you.The variable speed will let you cover from 1,000 to 1,500 surface feetper minute. We loved the quick-release belt-change lever and wonder whyno one thought of it sooner. Belt tracking is controlled with afingertip knob, and it worked like a dream in our tests. All that wouldbe enough to win our vote, but get this: it has a large-capacitydust-collection bag that swivels 360 degrees and will never get in yourway. Two thumbs up on this one. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars almost good
I've owned this sander for a couple years, but not being a big fan of belt sanders it has spent much of that time wishing I would notice it. Sporadic use made me feel that it was a worthwhile addition to the toolset, but it wasn't really tested until recently. Retired now, I volunteered to install an unfinished red oak floor in my son's family room, and having the time I decided to use the PC 362VSK for the sanding phase. I consider this a serious use of a belt sander. Here are my thoughts so far:

The tool is heavy (as we all know), so its weight (combined with the proper belt grit) provides the necessary "pushing down" force. Belt change is easy. Belt tracking is also easy to set and even if tracking wanders (not often) the easily-accessible knob makes it a non-issue. The balance seems to be good. After doing the entire floor (3 grits) it was still going strong.

Now for the negative, no stars (not even a glimmer) ratings: the dust collection is pathetic. That useless bag sticking up there getting in the way, coupled to the tool with an ineffective ball thingy that's difficult to use (and has no seal) is..well...pathetic. The dust bag will eventually fill, but this is purely coincidental...not to be confused with a dust collection system that actually works. And as far as I can see the port isn't designed to be connected to a separate vacuum...I duct-taped the hose of my Fein vac to the port and that worked well, but c'mon...duct tape?? (BTW if you take this route also tape the power cord to the vac hose making it essentially one unit...much easier to manage).

The other major issue is the sanding shoe...it warps, as another reviewer reported. Mine became convex, so the sander "rolled around" on the platen digging in and not sanding flat. Some time ago I had purchased some carbon impregnated fabric from Woodworker's Supply that was designed to be used on sander platens, so I took the metal shoe off, fitted a piece of this stuff to the cork shoe, and it worked fine. I wouldn't recommend this machine until PC includes the carbon shoe as standard. If you do buy it get the carbon shoe at the same time and send the metal one to PC with some appropriate suggestion as to what they might do with it.
