The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for varying grass heights from 1/2 to 2-1/4 inches. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, 18-inch cutting width, and 2-inch welded shrub bar, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. Plus, the soft foam cushion on the handlebar is a nice--and much appreciated--touch. The rest of the construction, however, isn't quite as reliable. A Fantastic Mower!
I grew up using a power mower to maintain lawns, but after a few weeks with this mower, I'm not sure I'd go back to using a gas-powered mower. This may be the only purchase I've ever made that went against my wife's wishes, but she seems to have come to terms with my purchase, and even admits that the mower yields good results.

This mower will not give you that perfect, even cut that a typical gas-powered mower will produce, but a friend and I agreed that we both like that the result is not 100% perfect. There's a certain beauty in the minor imperfections.

Other reviewers have stated that twigs and rocks will bring the mower to a grinding halt. They certainly will, but considering that a power mower can turn those objects into potentially dangerous projectiles, I'm quite comfortable with backing up, and removing the obstacle.

Weeds and thicker blades of grass will require an extra pass or two, but my experience has been that they will fall victim to the blades. One effective trick that I recently discovered, is to give the mower a forceful push, and then stop it directly over the stubborn grass or weed, letting the mower blades rotate for a few seconds. The weed/grass will get caught in the rotating blades, and will be cut. For particularly recalcitrant weeds, you'll have to break down and pull them, which is the only way I know (aside from sprays) that will eliminate the weed for good.

I can't speak for all grass types, and do not know that much about grass myself. I know when I first used this mower on our new property, the grass was about four or five inches high, and went down without a fight.

I would recommend this mower to anyone. Your neighbors may look at you a little strangely at first, and generously offer their gas-powered mowers, but you'll be happy you made the purchase. Lawn mowing has become a much less arduous task, and I am quite happy with my purchase.

AHHHH the joy of mowing the lawn
I am so happy with this lawn mower. I just stroll around the lawn with ease. As a household of three women, my two daughters & myself we always argue as to who's turn it is to mow the lawn. Now I don't mind doing it. It's quiet, relaxing and most of all easy to push, and I don't have to start it or add gas! It was also easy to put together & coming from someone who can just about hang a picture that is saying something. This mower is great. It's funny my neighbor laughed & said wow I haven't seen one of those in years. Well he'll see it every weekend & it won't wake up the neighbors. It's great.

A REEL WINNER
I live in a TOWNHOUSE community in HOUSTON, TEXAS where ST. AUGUSTINE turf is one of the few types of GRASS that will survive our summers. This spring I had new SOD laid in front of my TOWNHOUSE. In about [2] weeks it was really starting to look good. The groundskeepers judged that it was ready to MOW and their 600 LB rotary mower KILLED it. New sod was laid on July 13, 2004 and that's when I checked on the various types of mowers available. The American Lawn Mower Company 1815-18 18" Reel Mower had the best rating so that's what I bought. Assembly was a BREEZE. The instructions were clear and complete. The downside was installing the foam rubber handle cover [using HOT SOAPY WATER as a lubricant made the installation possible]. On AUGUST 3, 2004 I had to MOW the grass because it's height was approaching 4". THIS MOWER WORKS FLAWLESSLY. The blades are sharp and the cut [I CROSS-CUT IT] is EVEN! Who needs electricity?
This is a real sturdy tool, solid, cuts well.Takes a little more sweatthan an electric edger, but the experience is so much more rewarding. great pruners for bushes
I like these a lot -- I bought them last May to cut back our lilac and forsythia bushes which hadn't been pruned in several years. The shears cut easily through both thick and thin stems, you can even cut several thin branches at once. I've since used them on average of once a week to cut and trim back tree branches and saplings as well as roses and other bushes. Fwiw, they do tend to do better on green or growing wood than on dead branches. As another reviewer noted, the foam handle covers can slide off but I glued mine back on and haven't had any problems since. The blades are easy to keep clean and the lock keeps them locked even if you say, toss them on the grass or a chair. Note, these aren't for pruning large tree branches or tough, thick bushes but they're great for basic pruning.

Not The FISKARS You Expect
Not what I expected...FISKARS are supposed to be high quality stainlessmade in Finland. These are ordinary steel, ordinary pruners, made in theUSA for Fiskars. I returned them. Fiskars Garden Shears Model 9637 are thereal thing.But now that these pruners are reduced in price, as long asyou know what you are getting, they aren't a bad buy.

Good for Light Duty Cutting

Happy camper
This tool is a little pricey but well made.It handles light grass trimming with ease.Great for trimming around trees and rocks.The swivel head is very convienient.All in all I would reccomend it for light to moderate trimming. If you can afford it,go for it.

what a disappointment
I had such high hopes for this edger but have been very disappointed with it.To begin with it's heavy and somewhat bulky making it difficult to operate.Secondly, unless you position the blades at a particular angle, it doesn't cut grass very well.Thirdly, although this would be ideal for someone who wants to develop his/her triceps, it's a pain to operate for any length of time.Even my husband found it tiring and painful to use.It would be better if it had a wheel at the base so you could roll it along while cutting grass.

Such a good idea is just not solid enough
I like the idea behind the tool. It's light enough to work for an hour or better without too much strain. The adjustable angle works well and has enough settings to be practical for a number of uses. However, I found that the metal on the blades is too soft and nicks too easily, which, due to the cutting angle, causes the shears to hang up and fail to cut. ... Read more

Of Limited Use
I bought this product recently to smooth out the bumps in my lawn. It didn't work very well, it's just not heavy enough.
