    Editorial Review

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
Originally bought a different jigsaw at a retail store for about $70, but it didn't work well at all.So, I bought this saw to build a poker table and it couldn't have made better cuts.I highly recommend this product and the 101AO 20 TPI blades to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
This is a great Jig Saw very powerful and easy to control. The only criticism I offer is regarding how you change blades. I find it very awkward to have to "pull up" and turn the knob at the top of the handle. It is difficult to tell how much is enough and on more than one occaision the knob has come off in my hand. The newer Bosch models have a better way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jigsaw - Terrible Case
All of the raves about this saw are true - it's the best I've ever used.BUT, what was Bosch thinking when they designed the plastic carry case? First, they used those cheap plastic snaps that make it impossible to open the case unless you have 3 hands; there is no place to store blades, the spare footplate and the splinter shields that come with this kit; you have to remove the sawblade to put the saw in the case; and lastly, trying to get the power cord back in the case and close it is like trying to get toothpaste back in the tube. In frustration, I threw out the case and bought my own. A larger case with metal latches and some storage space would be ideal or else a soft carry case that has some pockets ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great product for spraying
I am new to spraying a finish.I was trying to spray with an inexpensive HVLP spray gun.It did not work worth a hoot.So I went on line and studied equipment for what I am doing, which is spraying furnature.I talked to some autobody shops and they said it is a good system. So I broke down and purchased a Q4 Fuji spray system with a 6'whip hose and it works great.I have used it several times and with excellent results.I am learning more about using it and am extreamly pleased.Especially when I understand that my work will only improve. The product (the Q4) is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent results (after trial and error)
Never having used pressure sprayers before, I figured that an HVLP system would be more suited for the finish and trim work that I will be doing. Using the system does take getting used to, with regards to proper thinning, and thickness of spray coat. I've found out that it is definitely better to lay on multiple thin coats than one heavy coat. If you lay it on too thick, you'll have to sand and go over with another coat anyway due to runs. That said, it's better to go slightly thin on paint viscosity. One thing I don't like about the gun is that it's not optimized for spraying surfaces that are lying flat. If you attempt to spray horizontal surfaces by holding the gun at a 45 degree angle, you get a lot of overspray that has more or less ricocheted off the work piece. However, if you choose to prop the pieces up more vertically for ease of spraying, you risk runs. In that case, don't forget to lay them flat for drying because the Floetrol retards drying - allowing the paint to run more than it would otherwise. Cleanup is a breeze. Simply rinse out the cup and run some warm water through it. The big orange store carries a granular cleaner specially formulated for spray equipment that you simply mix with water and then run through the gun. You may have to wipe off the nozzle a bit, but no big deal. All in all, I would say that given a little practice, anyone could get professional results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly quiet, with improved hose
I received my Q4 system a couple of weeks ago, and have used it to paint the left wing of a home-built airplane. The machine is now shipped with a stout black rubber hose which does not crush if stepped on.The turbin is quiet enough that I did not need hearing protection, and the character of noise is not annoying.

Once I got the paint thinned to the right viscosity, the gun sprayed a good pattern and was easy to control. There was a lot less over spray than I have seen with similar paint with a high pressure gun. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Though this Porter-Cable tool is priced higher than comparable DeWalt and Makita models, the 557 is Amazon.com's top-selling plate joiner. Its success is perhaps due to its very powerful 7-1/2 amp motor--the largest in the industry--which turns the blade at 10,000 rpm and does an excellent job of making clean cuts in any kind of wood. As well as cutting slots for the standard no. 0, 10, and 20 biscuits, Porter-Cable's joiner features an exclusive, full-thickness, FF biscuit developed especially for cabinet face frames. Another unique feature of the Porter-Cable joiner is the 2-inch blade (included), which is small enough to make cuts in stock as narrow as 1-1/2 inches. We found the microheight adjustment works well, allowing for precise biscuit placement. The tool is well balanced and comfortable to use. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold
If you want the best then stop here.I have had absolutely NO problems with this tool.It is extremely accurate and very light and easy to use.
As long as you take care not to abuse it I am sure that it will last a few lifetimes.
    From picture frames to bookcases to birdhouses it has never failed to deliver.I don't understand the negative reviews (maybe no one can measure accurately these days);-}

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product but lousy shaving collection system
I bought this biscuit cutter about 4 months ago, relying on the reputation of Porter Cable products. Although I have been quite pleased with the operation of the cutter (easy to use, good manual, versatile second blade cutter, etc), I have been quite disappointed with the bag collection system. The shavings keep plugging up the port thus rendering the bag useless after only 2-3 cuts. You constantly have to detach the bag, unplug both the port on the cutter and the bag, then reattach to continue cutting. If you're doing a lot of biscuit cuts at one time, this inefficient dust collection process becomes very tiresome and time consuming. I would have expected a better design from a Porter Cable product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biscuit joiner
Purchased this in Jan. 2005 and so far very happy with my second PC tool (my other is a plunge router).I had used a friend's Freud biscuit joiner previously, and this is definitely a big step up.I also looked at the DeWalt, but this had a couple of advantages.First, comes with 2" blade for smaller FF biscuits (not many joiners will accomodate this, although I must admit you may not use it that often).Second, unlike most bicuit joiners I've seen, the front handle is attached to the fence. This makes it much more stable and less likely to slip on a larger workpiece.Adjustments are very easy to make. The fence adjusts fully to just about any angle including 0 degrees with just the turn of a knob and with no pieces to add or remove.I also like the very handy and accurate fine depth adjustment.

Before you buy, be sure to read the negative reviews regarding some plastic bearings wearing out--I haven't encountered this problem, but I haven't had it that long either. With $25 off from Amazon, $30 mail-in rebate from PC, and included 1000 biscuits (500 #20, 250 #10, 250 #0) from Amazon worth about $15-20 it turned out to be only slightly more expensive than inferior competitors.

One other note--the problem some reviewers mentioned about the fence not being flush when set to 0 degrees was only a problem with the model 557, Type 2.All of the new PC biscuit joiners being sold (including the one I got from Amazon) are Type 3, in which the problem was fixed. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Take good care of these high-quality Freud chisels and they might just last a lifetime. The chrome vanadium steel used to make these tools has a fine texture that responds well to sharpening. We like the feel of the close-grained, 5-inch hardwood handle, which is bound by double-steel hoops for strength, durability, and shock resistance. The feeling of quality is carried through to the fitted, box-joint wooden case. You'll find this set contains a good selection of sizes to handle most general applications. --Tim Block ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but need work
After reading the other reviews posted here, and seeing some conflicting views, I decided to give the Freud set a look. They arrived in a nice box and seem to be as advertised, fairly decent tools in a mid price range.I felt that the finish appeared a little cheap, lipstick on the pig, if you know what I mean. They seem overdressed. There are too many tool marks to start using them right away, but with some work to finish them up I was able to remove softwood from a test piece that would rival a plane. This is a good value for reasonabley good tools that will require some final dressing before they become really great tools.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good machine, but...
I have to agree with many of the other reviewers who like this router for its smoothness, power, and low noise level. The grips are great, it plunges nicely, and the quality of materials seems top rate. However, my experience with this router has revealed two flaws that greatly detract from what would otherwise be a truly fine machine. While these flaws are not necessarily deal-breakers, those of you who are considering buying this tool may want to be aware of them.

First, as another reviewer has pointed out, it is impossible to accurately center template guides within the base plate. The user must screw the template guide holder into the baseplate, and since the holder does not precisely register into the baseplate, it is thus extremely difficult to accurately center the guides. If you use template guides and require even a moderate degree of accuracy, this flaw is a deal-breaker. Do not buy this router. On the other hand, if you never use template guides or plan on parking this baby in a router table, you'll have no problems. This would be a fine router for those purposes.

The other problem is another quality/design issue that can be remedied but is a moderate annoyance. On my machine, the release/locking lever for the plunge mechanism came loose on several occassions, making it impossible to plunge and lock the router at a desired depth. There is a small set screw in the lever mechanism that works loose and has to be constantlytightened and adjusted. This problem is not an isolated incident as it also has occured with two other cabinetmakers and their identical routers in my shop. In the end, having tired of constantly fiddling with our machines, the three of us adjusted the mechanisms as best we could, applied Lock-Tite to the set screws, and hoped we did it right because there would be no way to disassemble the levers once the Lock-Tite cured. Fortunately, the fix worked fine, and all three of us are happily using our machines without any problems. Again, not a deal-breaker and the problem was fixed, but this seems unnecessary for a $200 router.

The other router to consider in this price range is the DeWalt DW625 3 HP plunge router. Though it has more power than the PC 8529, it is the same size and weight. It's also variable speed and would be great in a router table. I've never been a huge DeWalt fan (many of their products seem overrated and overpriced), this seems to be an excellent machine. Several of the guys in my shop own them and use them for the dual purposes of plunge operations as well as major hogging through lots of material (the extra hp makes a big difference). Add it to your list of possibilities.

1-0 out of 5 stars beware - should not even be refurbished
I spent a good chunk of change on this router 2-3 years ago.It got great reviews at the time.

I am a weekend woodworker and I take good care of my tools. With high price, light use and good maintenance I was repaid with this:

1.Motor lost at least half of its power within 2 years.Has trouble cutting small dadoes in poplar.Problem may be related to the known issue with the switch on the handle, but I don't really care to find out, especially since PC has discontinued it.I only use it to round over edges in soft wood now.

2.The knob that pins the depth setting rod failed totally.I am not King Kong or anything, but even my casual use was too much for this feeble part. Now it is impossible to set a plunge setting.

I have had good experiences with PC in the past, but my experience with this product makes it impossible for me to pay a premium for that name brand, at least for the foreseeable future. Will wait to see whether this was a fluke or an indicator of things to come.

I just found the Hitachi M12V and have ordered it to replace this miserable unit.Funny that it is a much more powerful machine and cheaper today than what I originally paid for the 7529.Live and learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's clear a few things up
This Porter Cable 2HP plunge router model number 7529 took Popular Woodworking's Best New Tool award January 2000. This thing is a well-designed, super engineered, heavy-duty piece of equipment. I brought it home, spent five minutes with it, and learned the controls. I think that is where the misunderstandings arise. The plunge release lock mechanism handle is loaded with a backing spring, which enables you to adjust it. So you press it in, and it will move to a new position, let it go, and it pops out to a position on the locking nut. If someone sets it improperly, the locking knob with either not release the plunge mechanism all of the way, causing an uneven snag on the way down,or if improperly set, too loose, can cause the plunge mechanism to not lock completely in order to hold the position. I think it is great of Porter Cable to make that feature adjustable. Comments in those two areas are due to not figuring out how the adjustment feature works. Additionally, instead of the locking mechanism holding a setting by simply releasing the lever, it requires that you give it a push also. So you let go of the lever, the spring moves it out, then a quick push to total lock. With this done properly, their are no off angles, or erratic movement. This thing is one superb professional piece of equipment.
Pertaining to the two wrench concerns, Porter Cable went one step further and gave you both a locking collet, that you can use only one wrench to change bits, or use two wrenches. Even with all that, it is difficult to understand complaints.
Out of the mud, and into the light. The beauty of this router is that the fine adjust knob is superbly engineered for under the table work, in addition to hand held work. Typically other plunge routers are bad for under the table work, because you have to compress a spring to plunge the router upside down. Makes you lift the entire table while trying to plunge. What Porter Cable did was to take the adjustment knob and make it work like a fixed base knob. You do have to push the locking knob in, as in the release position, the turn the adjusting knob. It moves quite readily, and also gives you a nice micro adjust capability. At first I thought it was broken, because the depth adjustment knob would not work at all, then I discovered you need to push it into the full release position. So anyhow, with this router, for under the table use, you can forget about fighting a spring upside down, the adjustment knob works independent of the plunge. What a great simple idea. I have the Bosch 1619EVS, which has a spring, defeat mechanism, but with this 7529 you don't even need that.
It is in the league of the quietest routers out there. The Makita and Fein are equally as quiet. The Bosch routers are a bit louder, but are great routers nonetheless.
If I had to be critical of the unit, I would have to agree that the dust shield, which is a removable window of plastic, sits in its trough by gravity alone. When using it right side up, it stays parked, but upside down in a table, it will fall out. But then again, who needs a dust shield for under a table. The tabletop becomes your shield, so I wouldn't be using the dust shield under the table. BR>Pertaining to weight, it only weighs 11 pounds, but has a heavy-duty industrial quality feel.
    This is a great router.

    Editorial Review

Are expensive bits worth the extra cost? If the bits are these high-speed steel forstner bits from Freud, we think the answer is yes. Technical features--most notably the micrograin carbide/titanium tips--ensure these bits cut cleaner and stay sharp longer than any other forstner bits we tested. Although these bits performed exceptionally well on soft and hard wood, along with plywood and a few other composite materials, we were most impressed when our test cuts came up smooth and clean on both plastic-laminate and melamine--results generally unheard of with standard steel bits. These bits hold their own in hand drills as well as in any drill press, and we suspect they'll outlast other bits in our shop several times over. --Tim Block ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Have them sharpened first...
I love Freud cutters and saw blades. They are usually ready to go out of the box. I have a set of Freud HSS Forstner bits, and they are very good. I recieved this set as a gift and even though I already have these size's I was pretty excited to get a set of carbide bits. I work with a lot of hardwoods and you have to be careful about the pressure you use with HSS bits, so you don't burn your workpiece or overheat your bit.
I chucked up the 3/8 bit to bore some holes for decorative plugs and noticed that the bit was not cutting a very clean hole, seemed like I had to apply too much pressure also. I pulled it out of the drill press and upon examining the cutting edge, I noticed it did not have that bright, shiney edge you normally associate with a sharp tool. I examined the rest of the bits and they looked the same. So I carried them down to the local saw shop where I get all my blades and cutters sharpened and ask them to take a look at the bits. Their opinion was that the bits were very dull, looked like the last two steps in sharpening them had been overlooked. So $30 and an hour later I was on my way home with sharp bits. Put the 3/8 back in the drill press and tried again. This time the results were what I had hoped for.The bit cut thru the Padauk very nicely and left a nice clean hole. I cut another 19 holes and each was excellent. Cutting the last hole was as easy as cutting the first. I have noticed no wobble in any of the bits and other than the sharpening problem have had no trouble with this set. I do think my HSS set does a little better job in soft wood and plywood, but it is a close call. Wish I could afford some larger ones in carbide...3"-31/2" would be nice for clock making.
These are the first Freud cutter's I have had that were'nt sharp out of the box, so I won't let it influence my love of Freud blades and cutters in the future. I rated it 4 stars because of the sharpening problem. Still recommend Freud blades and cutters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch bits
I have been using the bits for several months.I have had very good results working with soft woods on my small drill press. The bits are very straight compared to the junky Irwin bits I got at Home Depot. The carbide bits are very sharp and cut a very true hole. The only problem I have with this set is that it is missing several handy sizes such as 7/8", 1-1/8" & 1-1/4".I tried to purchase the Freud 1-1/4" carbide bit on Amazon, but they appear to no longer stock them.Instead I went with the 1-1/4" Freud steel forstner bit.The steel bit seems to work just as well as the carbide bits.If I had to choose between the Freud carbide set and the Freud steel set, I would probably go with the steel, because it has 9 more bits.Buying forstner bits individually can get very expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This is my second experience with Freud cutting tools. The first was their 8 inch super dado set.It had to be exchanged due to
several chips in the carbide cutting edges. The replacement has performed adequately. This forstner bit set produced disappointing results for the money. The surface of the workpiece had burrs where the bit first made contact and the interior of the hole showed a torn surface on the end grain side as opposed to a smooth cut.Overall the quality of the grinding on the carbide cutting tips and the body of the bit was uneven and poorly finished. My twenty year old hand sharpened steel bits produced better results. For the money I expected more and returned these bits. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great product... poor support and very weak documentation.
The rout-r-lift is an excellent product that can be difficult to setup. Too bad because Jessem will lose customers this way.

The template this company provides is an mdf template which is okay. It's just a template anyway. But, what I really needed was detailed instructions, a kit, something. I had just spent over $200.00 on the lift, the least Jessem could do was help me successfully install it. Jessem really needs to put a kit together, or a brief pamphlet inside the rout-r-lift box that provides detailed instructions, a list of tools and template part number information to make it a little easier for some of us who are "less than mechanically inclined". And, how about making the information available on the web site. This is one company that thinks sharing information with customers will cost them money. Pretty archaic thinking. Jessem, this is an opportunity to increase revenues.

I spent considerable time building a router table and a nice table top which I didn't want to ruin. Jessem's instructions for installing the rout-r-lift were so weak that I had tosearch on Google for good detailed installation instructions.

Having said all this, the Rout-r-lift is well engineered and works as advertised. Now that I've successfully installed the first one, I'd do it again. It's a nice product.

1-0 out of 5 stars no manuals
The Jess Em Mast-R-Lift arrived with out any manuals or supporting documents. The templatewas also ordered and is nothing more than a 16 X 19 in. by 3/4 in. thick MDF board with a hole in it without instructions. The $9.90 cost for the template is excessive as a 4 X 8 foot sheet of MDF can be purchased for less money.
The use of the template requires the hole to be cut with a 1/2 inch bit with a with a 3/4 inch bearing, none of which are supplied by the vendor.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have or are considering the Porter Cable 7518...
If you have or are considering the Porter Cable 7518 model, JessEm makes the MAST-R-LIFT which works great. Rockler has it if you can't find it here and there are adapters to fit other models. If you intend to use the 7518 only in a router table, then buy the MAST-R-LIFT and only the motor unit of the 7518. It'll save you some $$. Didn't know you could do that. You may get other router vendors via a replacement motor unit. If you're buying a 3+ HP router, that motor is going to be very heavy. Now some router lifts are L shaped and the motor gets strapped on the side. Over time you may not get the consistent support needed for heavy routers. The MAST-R-LIFT is H shaped--giving two vertical bars of support and balanced consistent support. The only bad thing, is I think these units (for their price) should include a template and instructions to route the supporting hole. You might also consider getting an external on/off switch. Also in your table design, plan access to that variable speed switch too. A motorized drive is a luxury and would have to be carefully stepped to get fine adjustments. The crank works great. I did find the plastic inserts a little stiff, but you can touch them up with a Dremel tool if need be. One last point. Always remove the crank handle before you change bits. I didn't do this once, and got a bad cut on my knuckle. ... Read more

Hook-and-loop abrasives on this sander will take off tons ofstock for you at 80 grit and leave a swirl-free finish at 120 to 150.Five dust-extraction holes in the pad pull the sawdust away and intothe dust-collection canister, which is big enough to let you work for along time without emptying it, but not so big that it's in the way. Youcan also connect it to your vacuum system. An easy thumb wheel controlsthe speed, which ranges from 5,000 to 12,000 orbits per minute. It'squiet and easy to handle. These features alone make it a great choice, but here's the smartest thing Porter-Cable did with this little gem: apad brake will immediately slow the revolutions to 400 per minute whenthe unit is lifted off the work surface. This helps prevent gaugingwhen you lift the sander off or place it back on the work surface. 1-0 out of 5 stars Coincidence or poor quality ?
I must start by saying that I know people who purchased Porter Cable random orbit sanders years ago that got good service out of them. However, in the past year every one I have seen has worn out within a month. I run a cabinet shop. four of my employees (skilled cabinet makers) bought new Porter Cable r.o. sanders last year. Every one of them either had a motor or bearing burn out within a month. Two of them were replaced by the dealer with new sanders, which also lasted about a month. The other two were not replaced because the bearings are not covered by the warranty. When I politely contacted Porter Cable about this, they said too bad, so sad. We have had great luck with Dewalt, Ridgid, and Bosch.

4-0 out of 5 stars sanding pad replacement
Have had the 333VS for about one year and am very satisfied with the sander's overall performance.Very aggressive at coarser grits yet silky smooth finishes using finer grits.Had to replace the sanding pad, P/N13909, after about 8-hours of operation as the pad would no longer hold sanding disks. The sander is used mostly on flat stock in preparation and finishing of furniture construction projects.Other than the machines weight, very little if any pressure is ever placed on the machine during operation.I know of only one other woodworker who has experienced the same pad problem.Have any of you woodworkers out ther experienced it?If so, please let me know if I'm the problem or the pad is.At ~$18.00/pad, it could get expensive if it is a recurring problem.I'll find out with my new replacement pad.Porter Cable informed me the pad should last approximately 25-30 hours under normal conditions. In spite of my problem, I'd still recommend purchasing the 333VS.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the quality the brand name and price make you expect
I thought I had ordered a premium product, but I returned it right away, as the quality didn't keep up with the price.
I really liked the idea of this dust container instead of these cloth bags elsewhere.
But for a price that is almost twice of other brands (you can also get a nice variable speed sander for $50-$70) I would expect flawless manufacturing quality. ... Read more

While there are a number of rotary tools on the market made by a host of different manufacturers, the Dremel Moto-Tool is the one they all strive to copy. Dremel's MultiPro variable-speed model is great for a huge range of projects, from home improvement tasks to hobbies and crafting. It has a continuously adjustable speed range from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm, which allows the user to effectively work with materials as soft as balsa wood and as hard as ceramics. The flexible shaft that comes with this model is great for working in tight spots many rotary tools can't touch. The kit also comes with an assortment of accessories and a handy carrying case. DeWalt DW990K-2 14.4 Volt XRP 1/2" Cordless Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit
    by DeWalt
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $370.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

DeWalt builds cordless tools with the serious user in mind--and the 14.4-volt drill is no exception. The balance and weight are excellent, and the oversize, rubber-coated trigger is comfortable and responsive, which is important when you consider how often you use a cordless drill on the job site. But beyond its great ergonomic design, DeWalt's drill performs. The tool's steel transmission and copper-plated switch make for a durable motor that cranks out 334 inch-pounds of torque without sacrificing bit speed. (In second gear the drill spins bits up to 1,400 rpm.) The 24-position adjustable clutch is precise, letting you dial in exact torque for screwdriving accuracy and keeping snapped heads and stripped screws to a minimum. The drill's forward/reverse buttons are ideally located, too, making it simple to switch directions without lifting the bit from a screw. The dimpled grip on the keyless chuck is easy on the hands, which is nice, especially if your work requires changing bits frequently.

None of this matters, of course, if the tool overheats, but DeWalt's fan-cooled motor holds a good running temperature even during heavy use. The one-hour charger is also great. The only shortcoming we found was in DeWalt's bottom-feed battery design. The batteries snap in and out with ease, but the design requires a thicker handle than other models, which might not be as comfortable for users with small hands. We also noticed a slight jiggle to the 14.4-volt battery's fit--not a big deal, perhaps, but of all the battery designs out there, we're partial to the security of a slide-in fit. --Jon Groebner ... Editorial Review

When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Read more

    Editorial Review

DeWalt's sturdy four-column planer is a great addition in any workshop--and, because it's easily portable, transition to the job site is always an option. Thanks to the largest material support table of any portable planer on the market and a tight-locking cutterhead, boards feed through effortlessly with minimal snipe. We also liked how easy it is to measure precise cuts with the turret stops (set at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of an inch). There's also a calibrated depth crank that adjusts 1/16 of an inch with each full rotation. Unlike other portable planers, DeWalt's provides an easy-to-read gauge of how much material each pass removes as well as the amount left over on the original board. Rather than using double-edged knives, this model takes two big M2 high-speed steel knives with single-surface cutting areas that deliver an impressive 64.1 cuts per inch. Changing knives took us a mere 10 minutes (and we were new to this design) and--better yet--they can be resharpened multiple times rather than discarded after one use. Powered by 15 amps with a no-load speed of 10,000 rpm, DeWalt's easily transported planer is a nice combination of high performance and convenience. Each planer ships with an extra set of knives, magnets, and wrenches. --Justin Paul ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle.

The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material--a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. The saw's table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider crosscuts. The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electric brake, however; they're user-friendly features that make a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also has a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw also gives you the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

    Editorial Review

When it's time to step up to a bigger router, Porter-Cable's 7518 should be on your list of contenders. It has as powerful a motor as you can find on a router and a reputation for accuracy and dependability. It's designed to work with bits as large as 4 inches in diameter and has electronic soft start and five speeds, to ensure that you'll be able to use those giant panel cutters safely and smoothly. The large bit capacity also makes it a great poor man's shaper when mounted on a good router table. Like most of Porter-Cable's routers, this model features their autorelease collet system, which does a good job of eliminating the problem of frozen bits and the need for rapping on the collet to remove them. Of all the routers we've tried, Porter-Cable's are among those with the lowest vibration and cleanest cuts. One thing we wish Porter-Cable would improve on is the lack of a spindle lock, which means that two wrenches--and potential knuckle wracking--are involved in bit changes. But given that a router's real value is measured by the results it produces, we'd still recommend the 7518 as one of the best routers available and a great choice for any shop. --Brian Trinen ... Editorial Review

If installing hardwood floors is in your immediate future, the Porter-Cable FCN200 two-inch flooring cleat nailer is a smart tool to consider. The nailer is designed specifically for installing tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring with L-shaped flooring cleats and a thickness of 1/2 to 25/32 inch. The nailer works on 70-100 psi of compressed air and drives cleats with accuracy and force through even the toughest woods, but without damaging even the most delicate pre-finished floor. A 45 degree angled head saves time and frustration. A mallet is included to help position flooring strips prior to nailing them into place. And a rear-load, gravity-fed magazine makes cleat loading fast and easy (though some issues with the last few cleats in the clip have been reported). The tool is solid and stable. Heavy-duty, die-cast construction ensures quality. It also gives the tool a little bulk, but it's still relatively easy to use and well worth the effort.--Carl Thress ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Who wants to install 400 feet of crown molding? We'd be thefirst to volunteer, as long as we get to use this finish nailer.Weighing fewer than 4 pounds, it's light, ergonomically pleasant, andhas a great line of sight. We really like the depth adjustment on thismodel, an easy-as-pie five-position vertical slide right next to thetrigger. Nails load in a second, and you have the nice option of lockand load, or load and lock--something we think every nailer shouldoffer. Jams clear in no time without tools, another feature that showsoff DeWalt's attention to detail. The pad is high quality and didn'tmar anything we tried it on. Speaking of trying on, we looked great inthe cool, mirrored safety glasses included in the kit, and we're sureyou will, too. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more
