    Editorial Review

If you're looking for a more efficient way to seed a large vegetable garden or flower bed, consider the Precision Garden Seeder from Earthway Products. The seeder comes with six standard seed plates: install the appropriate plate, and it will automatically space seeds at the ideal length. It also opens, closes, and packs the soil, and even marks the next row ahead of time. Note: assembly is not for the faint of heart and requires at least 20 minutes with a few basic tools to complete. ... Read more

Yard-Man 13AU604H40146" Diameter Cut 20 hp Lawn Tractor

    Editorial Review

The Yard-Man AutoDrive lawn tractor should fulfill all your tractor dreams. Perched on the broad and absurdly comfortable canary-yellow tractor seat, cool drink at your side in the drink holder (a most enviable feature), you can survey your land with just pride in luxurious ease. Corrugated foam seat cushions and foam lower-back support provide comfort for your derriere and lumbar region, and strong shock absorbers under the seat keep the ride from jarring your bones (or spilling your refreshment). Rubber foot treads keep your feet from sliding about, and all the controls are an easy hand or foot reach away. Ignition, choke, and light switch are all prominent on the dash, as are the throttle controls (going all the way from turtle to hare). The blade height lever, on your right-hand side as you sit in the driver's seat, is delightfully easy to operate, deftly adjusting between six settings. The transmission gear to your left shifts between forward, neutral, and reverse. Three sharp blades keep your lawn trim, and you can choose whether you'd rather mulch or side disperse. Other features resemble those of your favorite car, and then some. The dash sports an indicator monitor, reminding you to depress the brake pedal or add oil, when necessary; the AutoDrive pedal enhances your power control, allowing you to accelerate with autolike ease, while the hour meter records how long you've been cruising--we mean working. The 20-horsepower engine, the top of the line when it comes to home lawn mower power, can carry you regally about the land you sweated for, but no longer need to sweat on. And best of all, it comes completely assembled. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor customer service
The low rating on this product is aimed at the customer service/warranty associated with the product group. I bought a MTD lawn tractor 5 months ago and within 31/2 months the thread on the shoulder bolt striped out resulting in the idler pulley falling out of position. I called MTD for the location of a authorized service location in my area. The automated answering machine gave me the name and number for the service dealer. I confirmed with the service provider that the defect was a warranty repair. It took a month to get the tractor fixed and when I went to pick it up I was told that it wasn't under warranty and if I wanted to pick up the tractor I would have to pay for the repairs. I reminded him that he had confirmed warranty at the time I brought it in. At that time he said it was to hard to procees the warranty. I contacted MTD and the service rep said he would contact the service provider and call me back. He never returned the call so I called again. This time a service rep told me that they didn't tell me were to take the tractor for repair and that the choice had been mine. I told him that the automated system for service had that dealer as the authorized service provider in this area. He said he didn't care what it said, that the choice was still mine for where I took it. He did say he would call them to get the other side of the complaint and call me back. I went ahead and paid the charges for the repair because by that time I needed it. I did get the nut and bolt that had been replaced and after measuring them found that both components were grossly out of industrial specifications. The thread engagement for that combination should have been about 77%, the bolt and nut used on the tractor had less than 50%. With a third less thread emgagement the bolt would stripe at a much lower torque than normal. The components used on this tractor can be manufactured cheaper and faster than standard fasteners. The service rep from MTD, surprisingly, did call back and told me that the reason the warranty was not allowed was because I hadn't supplied Proof of Purchase. I told him I had and that the date was on the receipt I received from the service provider. I informed him of measurements on the defective material and the impact on the failure mode. Some of the numbers were technical in nature so I told him he should confirm them with his engineering dept. His main concern was that I had the defective parts and he wanted to know how I got them. I told him I had just ask for them. He said he would investigate further and call me back. Guess what? No call. It's also the last MTD product I ever buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrity and Speed
I was reluctant at first to make this purchase over the net. I am, however, sure glad I did. The process went fast and painless. The equipment was exactly as I expected plus more. The price was much better than if I purchesed this lawn tractor locally. The speed of delivery and the friendly help of the delivery personnel was a big plus. I have already used this equipment and find it to be of good quality and ease of use.
Keep up the good work. Lastly, I've noticed a customer service availability, I don't need them, all is fine here.

    Black & Decker BV2500 Leaf Hog Vac'N'Mulch Blower/Vacuum

    Editorial Review

With the Black & Decker Leaf Hog, you can clean up both the deck and the lawn with one reasonably priced and easy-to-maintain machine. This blower/vac is electric, so it requires an extension cord and an electric outlet to run, but there's nothing else to set up or maintain. The 12 amp motor has considerable power for its size, more than enough to clear driveways or decks or blow off sections of lawn. At just over 7 pounds, the Leaf Hog is light enough to use for long periods of time, and it's also quiet enough to use at any time of day. Switching from blowing to vacuuming is a snap--literally. The correct button took us a moment to find, but once you've located it, you simply depress it and remove the blowing unit, then attach the vacuum extension in its place. The extension has a bag for mulch, which attaches with a small clasp. When vacuuming, the unit mulches by sucking leaves through the fan assembly. Though this model, with its patented Vortex anticlog vacuum system, does a better job of remaining unclogged than most, you still need to be careful to avoid rocks and sticks. It also has a variable-speed control that lets you choose between 150 and 200 mph blower speed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker does it again!
Whilst at a construction trade show I overheard two B & D reps talking. One said "the construction grade tools are well designed, but the consumer drills, for example are designed for a twelve hourlife". This is not unrealistic for a weekend warrior who might use the drill once or twice a year, drilling the occasional holes.

The Leaf Hog is apparently in the same category, based on sterling initial reviews, I put my doubts aside and bought one. With about 35 hours of use, it has quit.

    Buyer beware!

1-0 out of 5 stars Motor Burned Up
I had this product for about 15 months and the motor burned up. I didn't use it a great deal either.I would not recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars When will the leaf hog be Recalled?
We have had ourleaf hog for a little over a year. After using it for three times the off button stopped working! the only way to turn it off was pulling the plug. Also the on / off button is labelled so poorly that when the unit is dusty one can not tell the difference between the on/off button and the button that takes of the housing covering the impeller. After my husband cut his leg with the rotating impeller and not able to turn off the unit we stopped using this horrilbe product.I just looked to see if it has been recalled.Watch out people! ... Editorial Review

Spare yourself the effort of climbing trees to reach far-off branches with this convenient and powerful telescoping pruning tool from Fiskars. The Pruning Stik's fiberglass outer pole and aluminum inner pole extend to a full 13 feet, allowing you to trim upper branches from the safety and security of the ground. Its extremely sharp cutting blade can be manipulated by pulling a rope or the pole's ergonomic handle. In addition, the sturdy cutting head rotates 240 degrees to enable you to choose the proper cutting angle for branches up to 1-1/4 inches in diameter. A 15-inch Woodzig saw blade is also included for added cutting power. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy of use makes this a winner
While I purchased this tool for its angle cutting ability, I was pleasantly surprised by its ease of use which translates into finishing the job far quicker than with other tools.Positioning the cutter from below is a snap.

After years of using traditional pole cutters that must be hooked over the top of the branch, using this stick is a breeze.Just come up from below.Gone also is fumbling for the rope and positioning the hand pull when the pole's length is changed. With the pruning stick, the flip of a lever permits telescoping. And there's no rope to slow you down.

This is a very well designed tool which is well worth the higher price it commands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well when new
I've used the Telescoping Pruning Stik for 5 months to maintain 5 25ft trees. The cutting head works well for 3/4" and thinner branches. Larger than that and the jaws often get stuck around the branch. Once while trying to free it, the plastic head came off of the aluminum pole, so now I know to rotate the entire pole around the branch instead of trying to pull it free. After freeing the jaws, I was able to reattach the head. The ball-shaped pull knob on the bottom end seats very tightly and often the entire end cap comes off while trying to free it. I think it would be easier to operate if it was a T-handle. Likewise, the upper grip would also be easier to operate if it had a lower lip or pistol grip for a more positive grip. Or replace them with some sort of lever actuator for more mechanical advantage.

For branches thicker than 3/4", I use the woodzig blade. The blade cuts on the pull stroke. The blade is tough to use on thinner, flexible branches, but works pretty quickly on thicker, stiffer branches. I haven't used the blade as much and time will tell how effective it will be as it dulls. I keep the clamp attached to the pole, but I've already lost the original screw and wing nut that holds the blade. I had attached them to the clamp for storage, but should've attached them to the blade.

While the Pruning Stik was excellent when new, all of the plastic parts seem to have loosened over time. While the pole seemed flexible when new, the looseness makes it feel even more flexible. However, nothing has broken yet and it has been much less expensive than hiring professionals to trim those same trees. If and when something does break, I will be contacting Fiskars about warranty service. I should've kept the original shipping box though as it's tough to find another box that long.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effortless
Delivery took six weeks. The cutting action is so effortless, I couldn't tell whether a smaller branch had been severed, as there was virtually no resistance. I only wish that A:Fewer parts were plastic B:The pull cord were longer so I could hold the stik overhead and still use it at maximum height, and C:There was a 10 foot extension to get even higher branches. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Basic Starter Book
I found lots of very useful information from pot sizes and soil (and soil-less) mixes as well as useful info on lots of plants, needs, watering etc. As container gardening is quite different than planting in the ground, I found this book VERY useful and different from all the other normal gardening books. I am a beginner, but love to research stuff to death and I find this book does give you a very good foundation to get started and do well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I'm a beginner to gardening and found this to be a wonderful book.It even has a section on which conifers (Christmas-tree-type trees) can be grown in containers. This is great - I'm going to grow my own little forest on my balcony.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I originally checked this book out from the library, and after renewing three times and being told I couldn't renew it any more, I broke down and bought my own copy. It is VERY helpful in explaining the types of plants that do well in containers, and how to take care of them, how to deal with pests, how to "winter over," and so on. There is an entire section on what you can put plants in (be creative!), what the different types of soils are and what that means to you, and what plants do well in whichever type of light you have. I keep my copy of this book handy, and refer to it often. It's the single best reference book I've found on the subject of Container Gardening. Herb Gardening for Dummies is also good, but not QUITE as good as this one. ... Read more
