    Editorial Review

One of the first companies to design plate joiners, DeWalt makes one powerful slot-cutting tool. Some people argue that joiners are joiners, and while it's true that a slot is a slot, how you cut it makes a heck of a lot of difference. What impresses us about DeWalt's plate joiner is the stout, dual rack-and-pinion fence. Operating with striking smoothness, the fence locks tightly in place and ensures that the joiner's blade and fence are always parallel--which means accurate joints every time. The DeWalt is also the only plate joiner on the market with a fully adjustable tilt fence: the face plate tilts 0 to 90 degrees, so you can join work at whatever angle the job requires (22-1/2 degrees, say, if you're working in octagons). Cabinetmakers will appreciate the convenience of being able to make flush cuts at 0 degrees without having to remove the fence. The 6-1/2 amp motor spins the tool's carbide blade at 10,000 rpm, making remarkably quick, clean cuts. We found the gauges easy to read and easy to set, a big plus (there's nothing worse than wrestling with or squinting at a tool every time you make adjustments). DeWalt's joiner also has preset stops for all common biscuit sizes and there's a handy vacuum adapter that allows you to hook up suction to keep dust in the shop to a minimum--always a good idea. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars best choice for moderate use
I won't bore you with repeating the specs or features of the biscuit joiner as the other reviews cover them quite well. I've had this tool for about 6 months now and am delighted with it. I had the porter cable model which is quite a bit more expensive. I found it to be bulkier to use than the DeWalt and a lot more likely to slip away from your alignment marks than the DeWalt. This cutter has pins on both sides of the blade that go a long way to help keeping the cutter in line with the wood.. The only drawback is that the dust chute will clog with the dust bag installed when cutting into long grained softwoods.
Having owned both the porter cable and the Dewalt I must give a big nod to the DeWALT. Smaller and easier to use and a few $$ less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprise, suprise
Just received my DW682K.Opened the main shipping box and I was plesantly suprised to find a box of 1000 Porter Cable assorted biscuits. Then I opened the actual Joiner case, and found a set of four Dewalt wood chisels inside in it's own handy carrying case. There was no mention of either of these in the product writeup.Haven't plugged it in yet, but for $149.00, free shipping, and my added "bonuses", how can I go wrong? Not sure if everyone has or is going to get the extras, but I'm one happy camper right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate First Time, Every Time
Didn't think I needed one of these ... but boy was I wrong. This baby is worth every cent. It's fast, accurate, and durable.DeWalt has an excellent product here! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt Tools Really Are The Best!!
I bought this router because I needed to make some fancy doors on cabinets I was building. This is a great tool. The router is powerful and did not have any problems cutting through hard oak. This is a great kit because sometimes you don't need the plunge base and it's much easier to cut free hand with the fixed base, smaller, more sleek. The dust collection in the plunge base isn't that great but that could be because my shop vac isn't that powerful. I have used this tool a lot and would buy it again if I had to do it over.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any woodworker!
I was volunteering in a workshop and they had this Dewalt router kit.I was amazed at how quiet and smooth this router was and bought one myself! It is nicely designed. The grips are very comfortable. It is easy to change between the two bases.I love the rpm ramp up feature...this prevents the router from jolting to a start. It comes with a nice case and 5 router bits.
One slight complaint I have is that the on/off switch is hard to reach when both of your hands are on the handle. It is at the top of the router motor unit and is just out of the reach of my thumb.
Dewalt has another winner on its hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt's presence in router market is strengthening!
I have researched routers for the past 2 months. I've been in stores, felt them all, looked at them all. Read every review here on Amazon.com and all of those "free reviews" i could read on the internet as well as patwarner.com.

I really really wanted a Porter Cable because I heard they are the best. I didn't like the crude nature of the 690 and I didn't want to twist the MOTOR to move the freaking bit up and down. I'm just getting into woodworking and I wanted something that felt just right. After going into Woodcraft and Lowe's and Home Depot, I chose the DeWalt over the newest Porter cable because:

    1) the 890 series, while it feels solid and looks great, has some shortcomings with quality parts--especially the plunge base. It has a PLASTIC depth marker--and some aren't even CLEAR so you have no idea what depth you are at.
    2) the dewalt's plunge is the smoothest out of ALL other routers with bosch's and makita's being tied for 2nd. Porter cable's was very very stiff and didn't feel natural. I would be scared i would mar the workpeice pushing down so hard on the dang thing.

Bottom line- I tried and tried to love the new porter cable. And I do, but not as much as the newest Dewalt. However, I still will probably go with their 3 1/4 horse, and a 890 D-Handle if they ever make it. ... Read more

Delta JT160 Shopmaster 6" Bench Top Jointer

    Editorial Review

Small shop? Limited budget? That doesn't mean you have to give up onowning a jointer. This Shopmaster model is perfect for either situation but still packsfeatures for precision woodworking. Variable speed offers 6,000 to 11,000 rpm, adjustable at the touch of a dial; infeed and outfeed tables adjust smoothly and easily.Though the 30-inch bed is shorter than stationary models, you aren't losing anything inwidth, because the JT160's cutting capacity is a full 6-1/8 inches. The fence, shorter andlighter, of course, than stationary models, tilts 0 to 45 degrees outward for beveling andchamfering operations. Positive stops are at 45 and 90 degrees. One sure advantage overits big brothers: the JT160 weighs just 35 pounds. Its cutterhead uses two knives ratherthan three, and the knives level with an easy-to-adjust jackscrew. Rubber base pads keepthis little fellow where you want him, and if you want a permanent home for it, a stand isavailable. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Put Your money toward something better
I'm on my second Delta jointer planer. The first planer was delivered with a bent in-feed table. The table was bent one half an inch down at the end of the table and had a large chip in the table top. It looked so bad I just look at it and shook my head in disbelief. I sent it back, then I re-ordered. The second jointer came with two cracked tables plus a dent in the edge of the out-feed table. Both tables had a dip in the center of over 24000 of an inch plus some nicks in the top's. It was useless to me. If you pay your hard earned money for a tool and that tool does not do the job it was intended to do then it's junk and not worth the money you paid. I was really wanting this to be a good jointer because it was just the right size for my shop and was not that heavy. I guess you just can't beat Cast Iron.
Don't waste you time on this Cheap Delta unit. Everyone that gave this unit a bad report was right. I should of listened.

1-0 out of 5 stars You could "Roll One" on the Surface of this Thing
It may be good enough for a pot-head to roll a joint on(especially if the boss is paying for it). I went through two of them in a month's time. A dopehead will hang out in the shop for days and milk you dry before he tells you that it broke down, or that he cannot change the blades on the aluminum head once they have worn down a bit. The bolts won't come out of the aluminum drum in order for you to change the blades.
Of course, it worked just long enough for me to put a little faith in it, as Delta rests on it's laurels and it's "American-Made" name of old. But of course, it's made in China now.
Don't buy this thing, and don't hire any "American-Made" dope-heads. The combination would drain your checkbook in a very short time.
    -A Professional Woodworker since 1985

5-0 out of 5 stars For the modest price, it's well-made and a good value
Well-packed, clear instructions, minimal assembly and no need for any adjustments to the cutter. The fence is a bit stiff and awkward to adjust and fine-tune to the table but it's a reasonable trade-off given the unit's low price and other features. You'll just need to be a bit more deliberate and patient in setting it up if your needs demand frequent changes away from 90 degrees. The unit is reasonably quiet and surprisingly vibration free. Since it's so light in weight, I was able to use mine clamped to a B&D Workmate with no movement or problems. I took a rough piece of 1x2 and planed all 4 sides into a very nice, smooth finished product. Chips flew out mostly in the direction of the feed and onto the floor nearby so you'll definitely need a shop vacuum afterwards. Again, all things being equal, this unit is a good alternative for woodworkers like myself who are terribly short on shop space and working with a very limited equipment budget. The Pros will, no doubt, require and demand bigger and better and that's okay. ... Read more
