    Editorial Review

What a good idea all these Chicken Soup for the Soul books are! Instead of reading one book and hunting around for the most touching or uplifting passage, the Soup brigade of editors and writers scours the published world for brief excerpts, arranges them by category, and sells them by the kabillion.

The spoon-size stories in Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul hit the spot and warm the heart. Take the case of Dame Margot Fonteyn, the legendary dancer. She fell madly for Latin lover Roberto Arias at 18 in 1937, but history flung them apart. He recourted her 14 years later, after he'd become Panama's ambassador to the UN. Five assassin's bullets crippled him, but not their romance: he watched from the wings in a stretcher as she took 43 curtain calls in Romeo and Juliet. "I feel it's rather a fair division," she said of their love. "He thinks. I move. You see, I love him." Another love-triumphing-over-paralysis chapter reprints the most stunning passage of Christopher Reeve's Still Me.

The cartoons aren't great, but many of the celebrity quotes in the book are, like this one from Ursula K. Le Guin: "Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread, remade all the time, made new." But one correction: the line "There is only one serious question ... how to make love stay" is from Tom Robbins, not "Tim Robbins." --Tim Appelo ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!
i read this book when i became engaged. it totally gave me inspiration and ideas for my relationship. this book was so uplifting and it always made me smile. all the stories are beautiful. I recommend this book to anyone who has been in love, who is in love or even looking for love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Couples to read together
I have 7 Chicken Soup for the Soul books and love them all. This has to be my favorite though, because my fiance and I read it together. It was a wonderful experience to read each story and think about how it relates to our relationship. We were inspired by the stories of the elderly couples who are still in love.We are 20 and have a very strong bond, but these stories give us hope and reassurance that these kind of loving relationships still exist.I recommend this book to every couple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brought out the romantic in my macho man
Anyone who has a romantic bone in their body will find this book entertaining and sentimental. Allow me to illustrate: my macho, grunting, military boyfriend begrudgingly borrowed my dog-eared copy to read on a cozy afternoon at my house. After approximately ten minutes, he is all teary-eyed and encases me in a huge bear-hug. He has romantic tendencies, but it takes an act of God (or Chicken Soup, apparently) to inspire actions such as this on his part. I find the book interesting, eloquent at times, and generally worthy of a warm, fuzzy glow. It is easy to steal a glance at one or two stories during a few minutes of spare time, and equally easy to read the entire book in one sitting on a rainy afternoon. That is, if you can pry it away from your significant other's grasp. I recommend getting two copies to alleviate this problem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great perspective - smart and to the point.
This is a pretty good book. I don't know what the author was thinking about though by giving it that title. I didn't want to read it or buy it because... well, I don't consider myself to be a complete or compleat idiot.
The fact is, he is a good author and a great trainer. The basic premise of the book is to remember to 1. RECOVER and 2. Use the right fuel.I wrote a complete review on my weblog: Heart Monitor Training Book.. http://charanis.com/blog/2005/04/02/heart-monitor-training-book/

    Here are some quotes:
    Lactic acid and its effects
    Fast twitch red cells
The Bear is lactic acid build-up
The Wall is lack of glycogen
The secret about breathing (hint - winded isn't lack of oxygen - its that their muscle cells can't use it).
Duration of training is key to fat burning
Running longer then two hours is counter productive
    Training increases blood supply
It takes time to grow capillaries (Be patient)

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many pages for just a few messages
This book is an entertaining, quick, and easy read, but contains really only one key message that doesn't take more than a brief magazine article to explain. It's the same message repeated over and over again: training too hard is inefficient and you won't improve - you must alternate hard days with easy days, with "hard" being defined as over 70% your max heart rate, and "easy" being below that threshold. That's really all you need to know. Not worth reading an entire book on it - one chapter is entirely on athletes' testimonials trying to convince you of the importance of heart rate monitor training. Well hello, I'm reading the book - you don't need to continue to sell me on the strategy halfway through it! The suggested training programs are overly-simplistic, and I would find it hard to stick to them exactly, as Parker suggests, given other normal training needs (e.g., cross-training, weight-lifting, etc.). The book is also designed primarily for runners, as evidenced by the running-based training program. The book lacks any real insight beyond the very basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes so much sense.
This book is a very easy read (I read it in about 2 hours) with a common sense approach. The problem is most of us don't use common sense, so this book helps you do it. Increased my speed in a very short time. The only knock is it could be more in depth on training plans and use in races. ... Read more

I have to admit I read the excerpts from this book with growing horror.I stumbled upon the book by accident, the name caught my eye having the misfortune of once being married to Mr. Knox.I can see he is still the same sick, delusional person I was lucky enough to escape from.I would only hope that caring parents and loving spouses would see thru the deliberate cloud of so called smoke that is demonstrated here and see these ravings for what they truly are,the rantings of a severely disturbed person.

5-0 out of 5 stars the truth about this book
I am Dr. Jerry G Knox BA, DC, the author of this book. I am a licensed chiropractic physician with more than 24 years of clinical practice, most of this time offering colonic irrigation, barium enemas and other colon work. This book and all the other free offerings I have put up on line are based on these 24 years of practice and 11 years of fully accredited college and university education in the sciences. This book is a book intended to help others understand their feelings, and know that they are worthwhile people. It was not written for profit. it was written to help others!

If you have any questions about the book, you have two chapters from it as well as articles on health issues such as candida, irritable bowel sydrome, constipation, cancer, child birth and colds and flu that can improve peoples lives but are not based on making money for doctors or pill pushing companies. All this is on the web at http://www.lifeknox.com I know I am constantly attacked by those that hide behind false names, and lie about my credentientals and work to help humanity. The difference here is that almost all my work is online and published for you to see without any charge. Please judge for yourself as to the worth of it.

One of those detractors claims that my work is even blasphemous! There is nothing in any writing I have ever done on line, in books or articles or anywhere else that teaches any concept other than that of God is Love! and that God loves and cares for all of humanity. I have deliberately reviewed every word in the book to be sure that it is acceptable to all the major religious faiths, and just to those that care for others as fundamental belief system. If that is blasphemous, then what does that person think of the love of Christ, and his teachings of love? My work is based on experience and science, not advocating any church, mosque or synagogue, but seeks to support people in what ever faith they espouse.

    thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars professional well written book
THE book for those with interest in enemas. Covers the psychological, sexual, political and spiritual aspects of enemas and colonic irrigations, and is the only book to do so. Has an insightful chapter on a two week wedding ceremony, that could be the model for a new way of looking at entering marriage!

I found this book facinating, good reading. I do not see any conflict with any major religion in the conceptualization or presentation of this book. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Durable pads - horrible straps
Thee pads were great for me this past summer and fall.I used them to lay a cobblestone driveway. They really took a beating and the pads remained unscathed. The straps on the other hand are not so durable and one of the pads is near the end of its usefulness as the strap has almost seperated. To make matters worse, the neoprene does not breathe and your knees and backs of your legs will get sweaty in warm weather. All in all, a solid product that might not stand up to very hard use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super-durable and Very Comfortable
That about sums it up - these pads work great for any work in the garden or around the house. My only quibble is that you'll get pretty hot underneath the neoprene straps when working outdoors in the Summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pads For All Seasons
My wife and I bought a pair of these pads in the Spring of this year. We are carpenters and organic gardeners so we have gone through countless pads in the past: gel types, hard caps, neoprene, latex, etc. All of latter have never met our needs nor fulfilled our expectations.

The Fiskars Kneepads Plus are lightweight and truly do conform to our knees. We work them on hard concrete, slate, marble, rough gravel, and clay soils in total comfort. We are both right-kneed (prosaic license)and have worn out so many Carharts that we could start a second-hand store! Now our jeans last for much longer so these pads can actually save you bucks!

The Fiskars Plus pads also stay up and do not wrap around our knees. The padding causes very little sweating and dries quickly. The elastic and hook-loop fasteners have sagged a bit after so much use but my better half is also a seamstress and has re-sewn them to new condition.

It is a rainy Autumn morning as we now head to the garden to harvest our crops before the frost....Fiskars strapped in place. ... Read more

Capresso 153.04 C3000 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, with Pump-Auto Cappuccino System

    Editorial Review

When feeling a little groggy in the morning, or wondering where the coffee measure was tossed, or when dreaming of hiring a personal barista, consider the Capresso 3000. With completely automatic functions and stylish good looks, it fulfills all of these desires and doesn't ask for tips.

Easy to pre-set, the Capresso 3000 wakes up first, warming itself up in preparation for the coffee to come. Just stumble into the kitchen, find a clean mug, and set it down under the adjustable coffee spout. If you're in the mood for a cappuccino, pour some milk into a separate cup, so that it can be steamed while the Capresso brews. Then select the quantity and style of coffee wanted by pressing one button and, about 50 seconds later, the espresso or coffee is steaming in the cup. The milk is ready in another 30 seconds or so.

The Capresso 3000 measures out the correct amount of coffee, grinds it according to specifications, tamps it into the filter, brews the espresso, adds water, for an Americano-style coffee, and then discards the used grounds into an easily removable tray. If you'd like an additional shot, it's ready to go. The milk steamer never runs out of steam, since it's run on a separate system, and the removable water tank holds 96 ounces of water. To insure that the Capresso 3000 always makes great-tasting coffee, it also comes with a water filter attachment, two sample water filters, six cleaning tablets, and water hardness test sticks. Oh, and one more thing--the espresso is superb, with a rich, heady cream that made me think I'd died and gone to Italy. --Julija Gelazis

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Below is the message I Sent to Capresso. I think it explains it all. They did not reply until i sent them a follow up letter

    Dear Madam or Sir:

I was very excited about purchasing one of your Capresso Super Automatic Impressa S series machines. The design concepts and convenience appealed to me. Usually (not always!) the higher priced items tend to be of better quality and your machines definitely fall into the higher priced category. Therefore I assumed they would be of the utmost quality. Boy was I wrong.Rather giddy I took the 45 minute drive down to ******** ******* in Wrentham, MA to purchase an Impressa S7 only to find they had none in stock, but they did have factory refurbished C3000 machines. So in having good luck with other manufactures refurbished products, and assuming your company was thorough in its refurbishing process I was comfortable purchasing one at its $1200.00 price tag. Upon arriving home and opening the package I was rather disappointed. The machine was filthy there was still grounds in it, and the surfaces and catch trays all had dried up coffee and sediment on them. So I read the manual and cleaned the machine the best I could. When I went to set it up and attach the frothXpress I found that the Steam nozzle was missing. Figuring I could call and get one shipped to me Monday I continued on. Plugging in the machine and going through the initial rinse phase I got a message to fill the system and press steam. The system was full of water and beans and the steam half of the machine worked. When trying to make a cup of coffee it would grind the beans and then just dump them into the waste tray. After looking through the manual again and checking your website I decided that the machine was defective and boxed it back up. The next morning I loaded it back in the car and made the 45 Minute ride back to the store to exchange it. After making the 45 Minute ride home with the new unit I was happy to find that this one had the steam nozzle. This one was also filthy. During cleaning of the second unit I found that the used coffee container and aroma protection lid where missing from this one. When I powered up the second unit neither the steam nor the brew system functioned with the system full of water and beans. With this I packed it back up and spent an hour and a half to return it to the store, and did not get another for obvious reasons. Mind you that both boxes appeared to be unopened and factory sealed. With all that I found wrong with both units it makes me wonder if your refurbishing process consists boxing them back up and shipping them out or if the fixed units got mixed with the damaged units. I can not see how a company could ship a filthy machine like that with the health concerns involved.

I decided to give your company a second chance today Monday, March 07, 2005 by calling your customer support line. I wanted to find a stocking local retailer where I could buy a new Impressa S7 and express my dismay about the problems I had this weekend. I wanted to buy it locally so if I had more problems I could return it to the store instead of shipping it somewhere. The service representative got me locations down in Providence, RI about an hour and fifteen minutes away from me but seemed irritated that she had to do it for me. I had already tried the net but it returned no results. When I started to mention my problems she showed no interest at all and just worked to get me off the phone without addressing any of my concerns for the product. This left me with a bad taste in my mouth and no real desire to spend $1800.00 on a machine made by your company. The People at ******* ******* where professional, courteous, and sympathetic to my problem though there was nothing they could do for me. It is a shame your company is not the same. All this from a company that makes the claim "People and Attitudes Make a Difference!
Once you own a Capresso product we want to make sure that you feel completely comfortable about your decision" on your website. I am pretty sure my comments will not make it under that section of your site but I can make sure that this letter gets posted with every product review location that I find your products in.

    Disappointed,

    Danny Wilcox

2-0 out of 5 stars Sent for service twice
After two to three months use the machine has clogged and had to be sent in for service.Clogging seems to occur after the message displays to clean machine with the tablet. After doing that, the trouble starts. When it is working it makes great coffee.Don't seem to get answers on how to fix it myself. They just tell me to send it back. Then I am without it for two to three weeks. The local rep has tried to be more helpful than Capresso customer service.Has anyone else experienced this problem?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Everybody
Owning and living with the C3000 for over a year, I encourage people to try this before they buy.It takes time to learn how to get good results from this machine.Although semi-automatic, I always make the coffees, due to it's many idiosyncrasies.

Pros: Water container and filter system is really superb. System cleaning is very easy, including periodic maintenance.System status / display panel very good and easy to use. Fast warm-up time, auto shutoff feature.

Cons: It is honestly not the best at extracting full flavor from the espresso beans (compared to my Brasilia) - you really need just the right beans for best results & the first shot is always a tosser. Also, since my SubZero keeps my milk real cold, I have to pre-heat my cups with hot water and even then it is tough to steam the milk to a high enough temperature for serving. Noisy when making coffee.Oily beans jam hopper on grinder.

Overall, I use it only to make quick coffees for myself.I certainly would never attempt to impress anyone with the quality of coffee it produces. ... Read more

With top and bottom grills measuring 8 by 18, this family-sizeversion of the celebrated George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-ReducingGrilling Machine grills four burgers or chicken breasts, two bigsteaks, lots of taco or burrito fillings, or vegetables and seafood. The appliance's appeal lies in its simplicity and countertopconvenience--not to mention its fat-fighting ability. By grilling fromtop and bottom simultaneously, the 820-watt grill cuts cooking time tominutes. It also sears in grill marks, which not only look appetizingbut also contribute caramelized flavor. The bottom grill's deepchannels collect fat, and the grill is sloped so fat runs off into adishwasher-safe plastic tray (two are included) stationed under theunit's front. A floating hinge allows the top grill to rise and remainlevel, ensuring thick food cooks evenly.

Because the grill is nonstick, cleanup is a snap: all it needs is aquick scrape with a plastic spatula (included) and a wipe with a papertowel or a sponge. Overall, the grill measures 8-1/2 inches wide, 6inches high, and 10 inches deep, weighs 5.8 pounds, and is clad inhard, gleaming, white plastic for a sleek appearance. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Product
When the Mrs came home with one of these things - I thought to myself, "great, something else we can add to our museum of unused kitchen appliances. There's a spot for it next to the cusinart."
This time I was wrong. Throw a slab of meat in, and presto - perfect juicy, sans grease.I'm actually eating better, and sticking to South Beach Diet due to this.Fresh ground turkey, throw in some olives, sliced mushrooms.Grease and fat drains right out. I find I use this far more often than the frying pan. It's just better for certain types of foods. It cooks food evenly and is never greasy. Some say it's hard to clean but I disagee. It's no where near a bad as a dirty, sticky pan.

It also has a great build quality.Simple but terrific product. The exception to the infomercial = junk rule.Ranks higher than the microwave in my book.Every kitchen needs one.

    5-0 out of 5 stars No doubt...AWESOME
I bought this grill 3 to 4 yrs ago and it is just now starting to wear.We use it consstantly as it is the most convenient appliance out there. In todays society where we want everything fast this is no exception.Burgers in 4 min. I couldn't believe it till I did it.I now have to find what size and style I want for my new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable, will get a lot of use!
I have had my George Foreman grill for over five years. The signature and logo have worn off the top, but other than that the grill is in terrific condition, especially considering the wear it gets from me. I use it almost daily, and have never been disappointed. It makes the best tasting bacon I've had, crisp and not greasy - and very difficult to overcook and burn like I frequently do when cooking bacon in a skillet. I can fit about four burgers on here, and they cook evenly and quickly. Chicken breasts are a snap, especially when chopping up for a salad or pasta.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are quick and tasty(add a little precooked bacon, and you've got a terrific, albeit high cholesterol, lunch) and my grandmother likes to make grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches on it. I often make pork chops with just a little salt and pepper, and they always cook perfectly. Sausages are terrific too.

I think the nicest part for me is that it is very difficult to overcook or burn anything. It also cooks very evenly.

Cleanup is very easy, just wipe it down with a warm dishcloth after it cools and toss the grease collector in the dishwasher. ... Read more

When Suze Orman was 13 she watched her father dive into the flames of his burning take-out chicken shack in order to rescue his cash register. In that moment Orman learned that money was more important than life itself. And so it became her quest to be rich. But years later, when Orman became a wealthy broker with a huge investment firm, she was profoundly unhappy. What went wrong? She had not yet achieved financial freedom. In her nine-step program, Orman covers the ingredients to financial success--confronting our beliefs and fears, learning the nuts and bolts (and insiders secrets!) of savvy management, and finding the spiritual trust that leads to abundance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, simple and spares financial lingo
Do you constantly worry about your financial future? Are you willing to take the steps that free you from these worries? Are you not an organized person when it comes to your finances? If you answered "Yes" to all these questions then reading the 9 steps to financial freedom will be of immense assistance to your personal and financial future.

In the initial chapters, Suze asks you to ponder a number of questions on the purpose, honesty, responsibility, respect, trust etc among you, your loved ones and your money. Along those lines, Suze also gives insight has to the legal issues involved in creating everything from a simple Will, Trust and doing taxes etc. She even dedicates a chapter to debt management.

Suze dedicated several of the pages to strategies for creating wealth in the long term through investing. She discusses Mutual Funds, 401K and other retirement plans, Index funds, stocks. She also compares all the above among themselves and from the point of view of taxes. Finally, Suze reaches the spiritual world such as charities to answer the issues of financial freedom per se.

On a final note, the book is intended toward novices and people who do not have any or much knowledge of the investment and legal issues related to the financial world. If you already are well organized financially, I do not think you will gain much out of the book. Nevertheless, it is good read and well written with a simple language and lucid style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets to the root of the matter
I enjoy reading Suze Orman's columns, so I thought I'd see what she says in some of her books.I consider myself pretty financially savvy, so I wasn't expecting to pick up much I could really use from this book.

But I was wrong. The first two of the nine steps ask us to examine our first impressions of money from our childhood and then our fears about money. The third step asks us to really look at where our money is going, by looking at two years' worth of bills, credit card statements, and other papers. These seemed pretty basic to me.

Then we get to Steps Four through Six, where the more practical advice is given.I found it interesting that estate planning was before anything else, but when Ms. Orman explained why, it made perfect sense (people before money -- take care of those you love).Step Five is learning to make your money work harder, and Step Six asks you to trust yourself more than you trust others.I got real actionable advice from each of these chapters.

Steps Seven through Nine are where some people might tune out; they have to do with the spiritual aspects of money, including the benefits of giving.Even if they sound kind of woo-woo at first, if you think about them, they do make sense. If you regularly give money to worthy causes, for example, you are connected to something bigger than yourself. This will make you more engaged in general, and could conceivably affect your own bottom line in a positive way.

I liked both the practical and the spiritual aspects of this book.Of course, when making your own financial plan, you should heed Ms. Orman's advice:do your homework, consult experts, and then listen to your own voice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't allow this woman to ruin your financial life!!
I am a financial advisor and counselor and I have run across many so called "experts" in the financial world.Never in all my time have I found one more consistently at odds with reality than Suze Orman.Reader beware: there is just enough truth in Suze's advice to make it half-way believable but rest assured if you follow her advice consistently, you will end up in a much greater mess than you may already be in.Examples of TERRIBLE Suze Orman advice:
1.) buy your vehicle brand new and on credit.(many Americans do this but no financial advisor in his right mind would ADVISE you to do this.Your new vehicle will lose an average of 60% of its value in the first 2-3 years leaving you holding un upside down car note rendering you tied to this car for better or worse).Buy your car at least two years old and preferably with cash.
2.) Buy no-load mutual funds.Study after study has shown that more than 90% of your investment performance can be tied not to the specific investment you make, but to Asset Allocation. When you buy a no-load mutual fund what you are really buying is a no-help mutual fund.Unless you are well versed in the proper asset allocation based on your specific time horizon and risk parameters, this is a stupid piece of advice.P.S. studies have also shown that those who work with an advisor on their investments typically net more than twice that of their "do it yourselfer" counterparts.

The list could go on and on but what it boils down to is that Suze makes ridiculous amounts of money telling people how to ruin their finances. If you want strong financial advice, you aren't going to get it here.I hope you will heed my warning. If not, you will remember it looking back. ... Editorial Review

This compact cordless razor is far more versatile than that old shaving standby, the disposable razor. If you've ever hurriedly tried to use a disposable razor on dry skin, you probably wore the scars for some time. In contrast, this shaver can safely be used on wet or dry skin. And if you use it in the bath, it can be submerged in water. Because it's cordless and extremely light, it feels as maneuverable as any disposable model. The difference is a closer, safer shave--and you won't have to worry about running out of razors. A total body shaving foil guarantees a smooth shave all over, and two built-in trimmers work on longer hairs. Powered by a nickel-cadmium battery, the razor takes eight hours to recharge. If you've never used an electric razor before, it may take some practice to get the closest shave possible. Be sure and read the enclosed instructions to avoid skin irritation. --Laura Cuthbert ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I've changed my mind about this one
In my first review I had NOTHING good to say about this shaver.Well I am going to eat my shirt...a bit anyway. It has been several months since I purchased it.After my initial experience with it, I thought it only fair to give it another try. Here are my thoughts on the second run.

As long as you charge the razor fully and don't have a beard on your legs, the razor performs well (dry). You have to be sure your legs are totally clean and dry for good results.I found that using the razor twice a week (I have hairy legs where the hair grows fast) was fine.

My gripe is that it usually runs out of juice before finishing both legs...therefore I have learned to only do one leg a day.Considering I am very short, that isn't saying much for the battery in this razor, but at least it is shaving my legs well.

A good thing about it is that not only does it do a wonderful job on the bikini line, it does not chaff or leave unsightly marks. The skin along my bikini line is very sensitive and I have never had a problem, even using it several times a week when at the beach.

So I guess [amt] bucks is not too much to pay for the product.Hopefully most of you who read this review don't have the type of hair on their legs I have.

I think the shaver is worth [amt] even if you have to alternate legs to get a clean, smoothe shave.

A waste of money. It does not shave close enough.Using a razor carefully to avoid cuts is still the best way to get smooth legs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this
I had such hopes that this shaver would help me out.Years ago when I had to have an emergency complete hysterectomy, the doctor put me on heavy doses of female AND male hormones. The result...heavy hair everywhere...including on my face.I sprouted a real live beard. It has stayed with me to this day and the doctors tell me I'll die with it.Razor blades really tear up my skin so I tried my husband's old Norelco out.He didn't keep the blades in good shape or clean it so I gave up on that too.So I thought I'd give this little number a go.

It turned out to be a NO GO.First, it doesn't hold a charge for very long.Secondly, it takes forever to get a half way clean shave and then it leaves many places.About a week ago I purchased a new Norelco Reflex Action Razor here for my husband. When it arrived I tried it out.WOW, what a difference (well, it should be...it cost a lot more). So this Lady Shave is going back to where it came from and I am going to buy my OWN Norelco Reflex Action shaver so my husband and I won't be fighting over who gets to shave first! ...
