    Editorial Review

Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle.

The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material--a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. The saw's table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider crosscuts. The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electric brake, however; they're user-friendly features that make a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also has a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw also gives you the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
FYI, I sawed my left hand off with this thing and am currently bringing an action against Makita for the recovery of my hand - so keep that in mind when purchasing this saw.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Makita ??
I have owned this tool for 3 years. I finally give up. After having to re-adjust the tool to square almost daily, after using an angle, I can't justify the wasted time and screwed up project pieces any longer. I ordered a Hitachi.

2-0 out of 5 stars switch to another
This has been, plainly put, the least reliable power tool I've owned. It was okay for the first year or so when I used it to install crown molding and cabinet trim during a kitchen remodel. However, one day it started running intermittently, cutting out and then powering up again, and then it just quit.I went to the local authorized Makita repair shop, bought a switch, and installed it myself (not a tough job). That switch worked for awhile, then it quit as well.I let the saw sit while I bought a third switch, but before installing that switch, I tried the second switch again. It worked. It continued to work for a couple of months, then the saw quit altogether, this time during a fencing job.I ended up doing all cuts freehand with a Skilsaw Mag 77 (now there's a good tool!).

I installed the third switch in the Makita, and it didn't work at all.I'm about to give up.

I asked the guy at the shop if this type of problem is common. He retorted with, "Why do you think I have so many switches in stock?"Really, the saw is accurate and ergonomic. It's also frustratingly temperamental, and no one has time for this kind of problem.Time to get rid of it and get a DeWalt or a Ridgid. ... Delta 36-843 "Limited Edition" 3 HP Unisaw with 50" Biesemeyer Fence
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Tools & Hardware
    list price: $2,800.00

    Editorial Review

Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches.

The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch.

This model comes with a 50-inch commercial Biesemeyer fence system andaccompanying table board. While the basics of this popular fence design have beencopied by competing saw and fence manufacturers, there's still nothing quite like theoriginal. The Biesemeyer is made of the heaviest gauge steel we've seen on a T-squaretype fence, and the fence face itself is made of laminated 9-ply Finland birch, gluedsolidly in place--a construction method that eliminates warpage in the fence line that thebolts or screws used in competing systems can cause. The fence locks to the front guiderail using Biesemeyer's three-point locking system and automatically aligns the fenceparallel to the blade when the lever is tightened down, providing reliable accuracy everytime. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Saw Ever!
This is my first and last table saw! Easy to set up and cuts perfectly with little to no adjusting right out of the crate. The moble base is an excellent accessory that make it easy to roll to the side when not in use. You will not go wrong ordering this saw. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed. Excellent customer service from Delta. The only problem that I had was with the Biesemyer fence. Seems that Biesemyer had a bad production run on the rails that fit this saw. Called Biesemyer and they sent a new set of rails without delay. If you have problems with the holes not aligning up with the table saw, let Biesemyer know. Other than that, excellent buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will be happy
this is a great tool.It may often be more than you actually need, but I can't imagine it ever being less than exceptional. If you have the room and the money, I would not hesitate to buy this saw.

You will want to consider where you will put it and how you will get it there. With the 50" fence it is very big, and your 220V needs to be located correctly so the cord can reach and you are not tripping on it.These are things I did not think clear through before the saw arrived and I should have. The other thing to think about is that it is extremely heavy, and it ships in effectively one piece.I needed a lot of help getting it into a basement shop, and after I got it there I decided I could never move. Assembly is simple, and everything is rock solid. After you have it in place, all that weight (and the associated power) is a wonderfull thing.

I am very happy with the fence, and have no complaints about the mobile base, though if the floor is not level, it does not have much clearance when you are moving the saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Deal
Delta really thought about the entire package when they put this together. Not only do you get one great saw, but they include the mobile base, a great blade, the table board, and the zero clearance table insert. They have taken all of the guess work out of buying multiple items for a saw and wrapped it into one package....

It you're comtemplating over a smaller contractors saw for your shop or a cabinet saw, go with the cabinet saw if you have the room, you won't be disappointed.I was so close to buying a Delta contractors saw, I'm glad I laid out the additional funds and went with the cabinet saw.

The saw is heavy, you need one or two friends to get the saw off of the skid and onto the mobile base and a friend to help you align the cast iron extension wings.Other than that the saw can be put together by one person. It took me about 5 hours total, working over a couple of days to get it together. The saw cuts straight and true and needed very little initial alignment. The fence made by Besymeiser is the best, you can't go wrong with it.I've added the Delta outfeed table to it (see review), and would highly recommend adding some kind of outfeed table to the saw to make cutting long board that much more easier.

Overall I am very happy with the saw, it is the backbone of my shop.

I Would buy another Delta cabinet saw if I had to, but I believe I'll never have to replace this saw. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Fine Machine
Moved up from [$$$]Craftsman table saw.The old saw was a toy compared to this machine. This thing is a real solid machine...I hope I'm worthy of its abilities.Found the instructions to be very good, except the separate instructions on the extension table and fence as they were dreadful. Also, when you transition from the main instructions to the fence/extension table instructions it is difficult to follow and determine when and where to return in the instruction sequence.

I suggest you buy the mobile base when you purchase it.I don't plan to move mine much, but I wouldn't want to have to movethis thing an inch without one.It seems like it would be easiest to assemble right on the stand like I did.

Now that is together, it is a powerhouse!!!I look forward to using it for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Table Saw Overall
Using the standard Fed-X option, I received my saw quickly and with no apparent box damage on December 3, delivered right inside the new shop. I had the stand together, the cast tops on, and the saw up and running sooner that I had expected, in about 2 hrs. Then, I fought the fence for a while. The lack of clear fence assembly instructions, with no fence diagrams, caused me unnecessary delay. Finally I called Jet, and found out with their great tech support, that I was shipped the right rails & guide, but the wrong fence. I also had a broken plastic sight glass (plastic) on the fence, and no end caps for the guide. The new fence would not line up properly within the sight glass margin of correction, so Jet sent me a new tape to overlay on the guide correcting the problem. All of this was eventually received with a few mistakes on Jet's part, but it did take a month to get it all straight. The saw blade insert's opening is too large (it does works with my wobble dado blade ok), and the blade shipped with the saw is useful only for perhaps ripping.
Overall, the saw's fit and finish is good, and it runs great in the 110v or the 240v mode. I do like it better than my 10 yr. old contractor's saw I sold. However, in hindsight, I would now order the same saw, but without the Exacta fence option. I prefer another brand of fence I had before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding saw, Fence needs work
It took me 6 hours to assemble the entire saw but half of that time was spent on the fence alone. The quality of the saw and stand are outstanding -- fit of components, quality of casting and machining, ease of assembly, quality in operation... all near perfect.

The fence, though, needs help.My front support rail was badly warped and the rail sight (small plastic marker for setting measurements) was cracked, misprinted (not parallel to marks on rule), and simply didn't fit on the rail. The instructions are not very good and there was no list of included hardware so I could identify the various pieces.Alignment of this fence to the saw was a real pain in the neck.It should be noted that the Exacta fence is not manufactured by Jet but *for* them.

Once assembled with replacement parts (good customer service), the fence works wonderfully.Measurements are right on the money, first try.The fence is extremely rigid and moves very smoothly.

I gave the saw 5 stars because assembly is a one-time chore and the real measure is day-to-day useability. This saw is a great value, particularly since I only paid (price).I would buy it again in a heartbeat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biesemeyer is Best
Always wanted one of these fences, finally retrofitted my Craftsman with a great fence. The hour you spend installing it,and the savings from not making bad cuts will pay for this fence in no time.Everyone who tries the Bies, buys the Bies.If you are hesitating, it's because you haven't tried one yet.I wanted to wait for my "new" saw and include a Bies in the purchase.I never got my new saw, and I'm sorry I waited to upgrade the old Craftsman so long.Best tool in my shop. Bill Biesemeyer new his stuff, and in 20+ years, no one has beat his design (though several have tried to copy it).20 yrs ago I lived next to the Bies factory in AZ...should have bought one from Bill back then.I'd have 20 yrs of great projects by now.Don't wait ! ! !

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect fence
I have an old Sears 10" contractors saw and couldn't stand my old fences inaccuracy and lack of usefullness.I purchased the Sears 24X24 aline a rip fence and had to many problems installing it so I read several reviews at Woodworking.com and found the Biesemeyer fence system and ordered it.The worst thing was the waiting, the fence took only about one hour to install and adjust.I have cut several pieces at verious measurements and all have been perfect to the exact mark.I should have bought this years ago, it is heavy but excellent.I would recomend getting the table extension for it or making one from the drawing that is included in the directions. This is truling an awesome fence system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biesemeyer Saw Fence
I ordered the Biesemeyer 78-930 T-Square Home Shop Fence (Universal) 28"Right/12" Left about two weeks ago.Once it arrived, it wasn't long until it was installed and doing a fine job.I felt that the installation instructions were clear and easy to follow.and installation took me about two hours. That may seem loke a long time, however, a saw extension table is necessary and I also had to construct the extension.I have a Craftsman 10", 3hp table saw and I was a bit concerned that the fence may not not fit.No problems though! I would recommend this product to any Craftsman saw owner. It makes a huge difference in the precision and the ease of setup.I think the most difficult part is waiting for the UPS truck to show up at the door.

JET 708115GK / JWBS-14CSW 14" Bandsaw with Enclosed Stand includes Rip Fence and Miter Gauge a $139.99 Value
    Tools & Hardware

    Editorial Review

JET's 14-inch band saw offers woodworkers two big improvementsover other band saws in this class. The blade guide with light springtension inside the mechanism was the first thing we noticed. It staysin place when you loosen it instead of crashing down on the tabletop(or your fingers) as guides from other saws can. This allows fortwo-handed height adjustment, letting you set the guide precisely whereyou want it quickly and easily. The blade guide also offersoil-impregnated plastic parts rather than steel, so the blade stayssharp longer. We were also impressed with the blade tracking device, which locks in place so there's no need for readjustment after the testrun. The saw has a 1-horsepower motor that's fan cooled and fullyenclosed for dust protection, and computer-balanced, die-cast aluminumwheels for smooth operation. The 15-by-15-inch cast-iron table isslightly larger than tables on competing band saws, and it tilts 45degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left.

Other advantages include a heavy-gauge metal housing and a powdercoating (rather than paint), meaning the saw will hold up to regularusage and still look good. Another user-friendly feature is thequick-connect electrical plug, so you don't have to follow long cordsto their outlets before each blade change. Band saws aren't thedustiest machines around, so the 2-inch dust port for the shop vacseems just right, but a 2- to 4-inch converter can be added for usewith a more serious shop-dust-collection system. This saw is best forshops doing smaller pieces or serious hobbyists who want to do finework. Owners will enjoy quick and easy setup by following a clear setof instructions. --Nancy Gleason ... Milwaukee 0512-25 14.4-Volt 1/2" Drill Kit with Flashlightight

    list price: $294.00

    Editorial Review

The Power Plus battery pack is one of the highlights of Milwaukee's 14.4-volt cordless drill. The battery is reversible, which helps balance the tool for the user and also makes it easier to get into tight spots. The adjustable clutch is easy to use and gives you two speed ranges to choose from: low gear for more power (maximum: 280 in./lb. of torque) when driving screws and high gear for more speed when drilling. There are also 19 different superprecise clutch positions--so you can match the torque to the application, minimizing the risk of stripping screws or breaking off heads. The thin, soft-grip handle seems to absorb some of the vibrations, making the drill comfortable both to hold and use. The 1/2-inch keyless chuck is a bonus feature, holding a larger bit than most of the 3/8-inch competition in the 14.4 market. The forward/reverse function takes some getting used to: it's a switch, as opposed to the more common two-sided buttons you find on most other brands, and, depending on hand size, can be a bit tricky to reach with your trigger hand. The kit also includes a handy light with a flexible head, so in the odd case you have to work in the dark, you've got a good light to take with you. This is a great tool for either the professional or the serious do-it-yourselfer. Excellent work, Milwaukee. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee 14.4 V 1/2" drill/driver
We bought this drill to replace our 1,100 sq ft redwood deck. The 9.6 V DeWalt we had was barely getting the 3" screws into the treated pine joists.I was tempted by various 18 V models, but their weight and price (the 18 V models had just come out and were still quite expensive) ruled them out.The 14.4 V models seemed to be the right blend of power, weight, and price, and this Milwaukee was available on sale.It made the deck easy work and my arm did not feel like it was going to fall off at the end of the day.I have noted two "convenience" faults: (1) a clip for spare bits is not present and (2) the forward/reverse button, which slides forward and backward, is not as convenient as the push buttons available on most other brands.Milwaukee touts the ability to install the battery in the other direction as a feature allowing access to tight spaces, but I have never encountered a space where this feature was useful.Overall, this is a really solid drill; it feels and sounds like it will last a long time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Defective Charger Destroyed Two Batteries
I really like the Milwaukee 14.4 volt drill. It has remarkable power, resonable weight, and a nice working feel. However, the charger apparently failed to shut off and caused the melt down of two batteries.Would I consider buying another Milwaukee?Yes I would, but only if I had the assurance that the charger design has been modified within the past two years.By the way, new batteries are about $60. each.

3-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee 18Volt was almost perfect
I replaced my DeWalt 12 volt cordless drill after nearly 10 years of service with the Milwaukee 18 volt. I immediately realized that it was going to be nearly impossible to remove the battery without some assistance. I figured that my no-as-strong female hands just couldn't deliver the necessary squeeze power it would take to release the battery. So...I asked a strong male neighbor to give it a try, he failed. Ultimately it took my bench vice to apply enough pressure to the release buttons to do the job. After six months of struggle it hasn't loosend up so I'm taking it back to the store and replacing it with another brand. This time I'll try the battery removal process before I leave the store. As for performance, I loved the drill's power, battery capabilities and balance. I hope they fix the battery problem. ... Read more

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
Originally bought a different jigsaw at a retail store for about $70, but it didn't work well at all.So, I bought this saw to build a poker table and it couldn't have made better cuts.I highly recommend this product and the 101AO 20 TPI blades to go with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Jig Saw
This is a great Jig Saw very powerful and easy to control. The only criticism I offer is regarding how you change blades. I find it very awkward to have to "pull up" and turn the knob at the top of the handle. It is difficult to tell how much is enough and on more than one occaision the knob has come off in my hand. The newer Bosch models have a better way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jigsaw - Terrible Case
All of the raves about this saw are true - it's the best I've ever used.BUT, what was Bosch thinking when they designed the plastic carry case? First, they used those cheap plastic snaps that make it impossible to open the case unless you have 3 hands; there is no place to store blades, the spare footplate and the splinter shields that come with this kit; you have to remove the sawblade to put the saw in the case; and lastly, trying to get the power cord back in the case and close it is like trying to get toothpaste back in the tube. In frustration, I threw out the case and bought my own. A larger case with metal latches and some storage space would be ideal or else a soft carry case that has some pockets ... Read more

I picked up this planer in August and have since used it several times preparing wood for many projects. As advertised, it is very heavy and takes a number of hours to set up.Once the machine is assembled and adjusted, it does a wonderful job planing woods. It must be used with a dust collection unit as you will soon be in a mountain of chips! The two speeds are nice - you can buzz through a pile of wood in short order and then finish the boards on the slower setting - although with sharp blades, it is difficult to improve on the finish at the faster setting. The maching and parts were nearly flawless - the only fault I have observed is that one of the screws that fastend the oil gear box leaks a small amount of oil.

My experience is that this is a very good quality machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should have gotten it sooner
My trust in the Delta name has not gone unrewarded. I bought this machine to be able to use timber thats just not available at the lumber yard. How did I ever get along without it. Assembly out of the box took about three hours to get everything set correctly. Instructions are clear and accurate. All the parts where included. This is a heavy monster so get a friend (four) to help get it out of the shipping wrap and in place. The blades where set accurately out of the box. The roller extensions tables never seemed to be perfectly level with the bed but this has not been a problem. The two speed auto feed works great. I have run everything from pine to green heart. Clean, smooth and no snipe. The motor never seems to have any trouble with the cuts but I do tend to be kind and keep my cuts lean. The only trouble was the power circuit for this tool. I ran a dedicated 240 volt circuit. The book said to use a 20 amp and there is a sticker on the stand that says 15 amp. I went with the 20 but the motor trips the breaker on the second or third start. This motor is a direct start ( no capacitors) so the power on startup is high. I had to go to a 30 amp breaker. If you have the space and the money get this machine, You will not be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The hoist was a good investment
Recently purchashed this planer, the DJ-20 jointer and Delta dust collector.Same time I picked up a fold-up engine hoist. These guys are real heavy.Assembly was easy, with the hoist & nylon straps to do the lifting.
The Planer works flawlessly after futzing with the roller table assembly/alignment.The largest I had to give it was 12" black walnut and it came out beautifully and without straining.Only Thing I don't like is that the dust collector (optional) port is like 5" so my hoses don't fit.And I think you really need dust collector with this thing, unless you don't mind being up to your knees in chips.Had to modify the dust collector (cut the crossbar out of inlet), either that or change it's name to insta-plug.
I was woried about the steel feed roller leaving marks but it doesn't unless you don't cut, then their minimal
Saw minimal snipe once but not since, go figure. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A staple in the professional woodshop, a drill press should be able to perform grunt work, yet quickly adjust for precision applications. Jet's 16-1/2-inch model does just that. Made of cast-iron and heavy-gauge steel components, this press spins bits up to 5/8 of an inch with 16 speeds from 200 to 3,630 rpm. A 3/4-horsepower induction motor drives the belts, and, for your convenience, it can run off either 115-volt outlets (for which it comes prewired) or 230-volt sources. The large 13-3/4-inch worktable glides easily with rack-and-pinion adjustment and tilts 45 degrees right or left to accommodate your needs. Two features we like are the positive depth stop on the left side, which quickly adjusts and locks in place via three nuts, and the built-in lamp, a nice touch some competitors don't offer. Changing belt position is a snap after flipping open the hinged metal cover, and, to personalize the press for your comfort and peace of mind, you can adjust the tension on the spindle return spring, as well as lock out the start button to protect others in your absence. This industrial-style drill press is a tool any professional or serious home woodworker can depend on. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Drill Press
I chose this drill press after reading a lot of reviews comparing Jet, Delta, Ridgid, etc., both here and in forums, magazines, etc., and the Jet received higher marks on average (all had reviews that ranged from excellent to poor, so one has to obtain some sort of weighted average).I also checked out the Ridgid and the Jet at local stores, and both looked and felt good (lowering quill, manually turning spindle, raising table). The Jet had a larger "swing," longer quill travel, and a larger motor (3/4 hp vs. 1/2 hp) than the Ridgid, though the Ridgid was cheaper. Also, one local store that carries very high quality power tools only stocked Jet drill presses, an indication that the owner is putting his reputation behind them.

Assembly was easy and was completed without a hitch.Putting a straight 3/8" rod into the chuck, I checked that the table was square to the rod and that runout was minimal (I forget the measurements, but runout was very small).

I have had this drill press for 3 months now, and it is working well.At first use, there was some vibration at almost all speeds, so I checked that the pullies were aligned vertically (coplanar), which they were, and that the motor was not vibrating (it was smooth when removed and run on the bench).I then purchased a 5' link belt, which nicely made the two ~29" belts required, and the vibration was reduced to a minimal level (passes nickel test even when starting). The vibration was not really excessive before the link belts, but enough to make me less than ecstatic with my purchase. With the link belts, I'm very happy with the drill press.

The lowest speed of 200 rpm is very handy for larger Forstner bits and hole saws. The built-in light is nice (I had no bulb trouble that others noted), as is the chuck key holder, a small item but very convenient.

My only complaint is that the rack and gear system for changing the table height has some areas where it wants to bind a bit and then "jump."However, I crank slowly, and when I feel resistance, I back off and ease through it.Unlike some reviewers's units, my rack is straight and flush with the support, and slides smoothly (when rotating the table to either side), though problems that others have noted with the racks have helped by alerting me to swing the table slowly, watching the rack ends as they slide.

Overall a nice drill press that I hope will last until my son or one of my daughters inherits it from me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many problems right out of box
I bought the Jet because, like many others, I was impressed with the good things other reviewers had to say about its overall value. The motor is more than powerful enough, the construction seems sturdy, and the range of speeds is impressive.

Now let me tell you about my ordeal with this drill press. When it arrived (1 day late) via ABF, the box was absolutely mutilated. The driver noted the damage to the box, and that there was no visible damage--which was true enough. In spite of the box's condition, the pieces inside seemed to be undamaged. Assembly took only about an hour. Everything fit together nicely, except the rack, which is bowed so that there is about 1/2 in of space between it and the support post. The cast iron base is heavy and sturdy, but mine is warped--no matter where I place it, I have to shim one corner to keep it from rocking. The motor is quiet, but the motor-mount is bent. The whole motor assembly sits about 7 degrees off plumb. Naturally this is a little disconcerting. I had no trouble mounting the arbor and chuck to the quill, but the run out is so severe (over 1/32 in.) that I get oblong holes. And talk about rattle! This thing rattles in more places than I can count! From top to bottom! Forget about the `nickel test', I can't even get a wrench to stay put on the table--it dances right over the edge.

In short, this drill press is 100% unusable.

I assume poor handling during shipping caused most of the problems I have experienced, but judging by other reviews, maybe not all.

I'm more than disappointed. I hope cases like this are rare.

    UPDATE 1:
I have been on the phone with tech support for over an hour. The rep I spoke with was very patient and understanding and he didn't dismiss my frustration. After some time talking about the problems, he sent me off to do a little troubleshooting on my own. When I called him back with the results, he advised me to send the whole thing back to Amazon.

    UPDATE 2:
The replacement arrived in much better condition than the first. The belts are still terrible, but otherwise this machine seems to be trouble free.

There was quite a lot of confusion about returning the defective unit, and in the end, I had to wait for the 'threatening letter' from Amazon before I could get a phone number to call and sort it out.

    Final thoughts:
I have purchased several other items from Jet, and I'm sure I will again in the future. I do wish quality control was a little more effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill Press - Amazon Stinks Though
This drill press is very nice. The description isn't as thorough as it could be on the site.It has plenty of speeds and the quality of the work that comes off of it is very nice.
Be careful when ordering.Amazon claims free shipping and in stock.I had to wait 2 weeks - and they charged me an addl. $9.95 for shipping.Wouldn't have been a big deal except I needed it for business. And they strung me along week by week instead of being up front about the delay.
Also having the same shipping and availability problems with a bandsaw I ordered from Amazon that same day.Had to cancel and order from a different supplier. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

For those seeking a midsize jointer for the long haul, this 6-inch model is a great find suitable for the professional workplace or serious home woodshop. Powered by Delta's trusted 1-horsepower induction motor, the three-blade drum spins quietly in its cast-iron bed. Adjusting with rack-and-pinion precision, the fence tilts 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees for beveling and chamfering applications. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side--a feature for which we have much respect. Thanks to industrial-grade infeed and outfeed tables, even longer 6-inch-wide planks get the support they need as you remove up to 1/2 of an inch of material to the collection port on each pass. So you want to increase your edge on the competition? Delta feels the same way. --Justin Paul ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fence Biggest Drawback
If it were not for the cheap, cast aluminum fence I would recommend this. I think if you search enough you'll see that this is the single biggest complaint about this.

Suggestion: hold off until you can afford the next Delta model up (I believe that is the 360). It may be 2X the price, but well worth it. Also, the Ridgid is an outstanding buy at $399.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars works for me.
i,ve been using this jointer for about two months now and it is a real joy to use. i,ve heard the other reviews that were not to good, but mine is just great.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's with the pulleys not aligning?
After doing my homework (reading many reviews of 6" jointers in woodworking publications as well this forum), I settled on the Delta. The Jet had caught my eye (I have 3 other Jet machines, and have been impressed with their Quality Control), but in the end I opted for the Delta.

There is no question this is a great 6" jointer, as other reviewers have said. However, there is a design flaw (are you listening, Delta?) mentioned by other reviewers.

Why should I have to reverse the pulleys to get the belt properly aligned?ESPECIALLY SINCE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT! There, I feel better.

I also have another minor complaint with setup. The third bolt that attaches to the base through the dust chute could be a challenge for big armed, big handed guys.I managed, with very little wiggle room.

Overall, results with this jointer are impressive. Out of the box, the Delta performed flawlessly. No question, I'd give this product 5 stars, if not for the above-mentioned gripes.

I highly recommend purchasing a Delta 22-580K 13" planer to complement the jointer.I did, with no regrets. Now that's a fine product, worthy of 5 stars.

At the end of the day, the jointer and planer make a fine team.
Get past the setup, and this jointer will perform very well for you.No question. ... Read more

When you're ready to step up to the professional woodworking scene, this jointer from Delta helps design your calling card. Materials up to 8 inches wide glide across the cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables. The fence adjusts with rack-and-pinion precision, beveling 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees to give you the angle your work demands. We appreciate the easy height-adjustment lever that keeps the guide close to the three-blade drum--no matter what the position--through its 1/2-inch range via a parallelogram support structure. 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and Accurate
I bought my DJ-20 from Amazon about three years ago.Delivered inside my garage via lift gate truck -- not bad!The cuts were like glass or as someone else said, like 220 sanded finish.I have the Delta mobile base which is extremely well built and very useful since very long infeed/outfeed tables can get in the way in a cramped workshop/garage.

I've only checked flatness with my 12" Starrett rule and couldn't find any low spots or warping.

It did come with a defective knife guard (painted red in picture - aluminum). The pivot hole had been machined too large so it angled toward the table.Maybe should be 4 ½ stars but rounding up since Delta sent me a replacement with zero hassles.

After nicking the blades bad enough to need replacing, I haven't been able to align new ones as well as the factory.Used Jointer-Pal and dial-indicator but when tightening the hold-down bolts the knives move a few hundredths.Probably user error.

On mine, top says made in Taiwan, cabinet says made in USA.I would buy this again without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Industry Standard
There are three primary requirements that all jointers must meet.1. The in feed and out feed tables must be perfectly parallel.2. The fence must form a right angle along it's entire length across both tables (if it doesn't form a right angle there's not much hope in getting it to work at other angles). And finally, 3. The in feed and out feed tables must be long to facilitate accurate straitening of lumber prior to being run through a thickness planer. All of these factors are met and in many ways exceeded by the Delta DJ 20.I've owned mine for 15 years and I can attest that this is the best jointer I have ever used.I've owned two combination jointer thickness planers in the past and neither of these machines came close to the DJ 20 for accuracy in jointing lumber. The mechanisms for either removing or lifting the joiner tables out of the way to use combination machines as a thickness planer effect the accuracy of the jointer tables, regardless of how well or heavily built these machines are (one of my combination machines was a 20" jointer / thicknesser and weighed almost 2000 lbs., horrible jointer, constant problems with table and fence alignment).I would never recommend combination machines to anyone other than a casual weekend warrior with very little workshop space.

The 8 inch capacity may seem limiting, but in reality this is not an issue. The parallelogram mechanism for both the in feed and out feed tables is superior to anything I've ever seen and it makes altering the depth of cut a snap. This machine is a beast as far as weight but a jointer needs to be heavy... really heavy.Nothing is more frustrating than a lightweight jointer "walking away" from you as you try and straighten lumber. My previous shop was in a basement, the DJ 20 slid down the stairs (with three people controlling it) like a dream. However, getting it out was interesting and took four strong men (three at the bottom pushing and one at the top pulling), ramps, dollies, tie down straps and a healthy amount of grunting... it was a miracle the three of us behind the machine came out alive.

One recommendation I would make for anyone considering the purchase of this machine is to get the mobile base. You may have the luxury of a permanent location for this machine, but the mobile base makes moving this monster so much easier. The mobile base also means someone is not reefing on your perfectly aligned in feed and out feed tables to get it to budge.Others have mentioned a problem with vibration.Mine had this issue when I first bought it, but I corrected this by ensuring that the motor and cutter head pulleys are in alignment.Dust collection is not an issue but don't buy the Delta attachment, as others have indicated it is for a 5" diameter hose.Instead buy a $5.00 plastic one and screw it to the cabinet, works just as well if not better.

When I purchased mine it was made in Brazil by Invicta.I'm not sure where the current models are made, but if Delta was smart they would not mess with something that was basically perfect and a standard piece of woodworking equipment in any shop dealing with solid wood.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One great machine
Without getting technical, I will sum this machine up by simply saying that after one year of regular use, my DJ-20 has performed flawlessly, completing every task I have asked of it to perfection.I could not be happier with it.I've straightened and flatenned many boards with it and I enjoy using it immensely...it is a true pleasure to use and own.I would buy it again and highly recommend it without reservation. ... Editorial Review

For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Horible Customer Service
Over the past three months, I have purchased 4 Jet woodworking machines, including this one to the tune of almost $2400.Until recently, I was planning to purchase a Jet Planer Molder and Performax Drumsander, but based on my recent experience with the WHM Tool Group, who makes this equipment, I am having second thoughts.Although I am for the most part happy with the machines I've purchased, when I was assembling my table saw, the fence that came with the saw did not match the one in the instructions, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time on hold with the WHM customer service department to find out how to mount it to the saw.I can live with that, but as I began to use the saw I discovered that although two arbor wrenches are required to change the saw blade, only one came with the saw. Although I don't think it is too much to ask that they throw in two $6 wrenches with a $1500 saw, I thought, I'd just order one from the WHM website. There I found that the Shipping for the $6 wrench would be $19.99.I sent a note to WHM regarding this requesting a reply, and did not receive one. When I called a week later, I was curtly told that the saw comes with only one wrench. When I asked why it would cost $20 to send a $6 wrench that would fit in a standard letter sized envelope, I was told that they do not ship via U.S Mail, and that was the end of the conversation.I ordered the wrench to the tune of $26.70, and was surprised again to find that it was back ordered with no expected date of delivery. I sent a copy of this rating to WHM tool group to give them a chance to respond, but again have received no response almost a week later. For what ever it's worth, if customer service is important to you and you don't want to have to purchase things that should come with the tool and then be charged three times the value of the item for shipping and handling you might want to consider another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine For the Money
You cant really go wrong here with this mortise machine.I read all the reviews prior to buying this machine about the shipping damage and was holding my breath hopeing mine would make it in one piece but I have to say the packing could use some work. The cast iron base was cracked about 4 inches when it arrived.I called Jet and they sent one out UPS ground right away with no problems. The only other problem I found with the machine is the fence is not straight. Its off about 3/16 inch or better on alignment due to the hole not being bored straight through the body of the machine during manufacture.I cut some really nice mortise joints through some red oak and the machine works very good. The bits that came with it are very sharp and seem to function great.Would have gave it 5 stars if not for the fence problem. All in all not bad for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the hobbyist
I've built several projects with this mortiser over the past year.It has done a great job.The stop mechanism works great, it's sturdy, and the chisels that come with it are plenty sharp.I've built about 4 tables with this machine, and I am currently building a cabinetmaker's bench, which requires me to bore mortises about 3 inches deep.Since I am using poplar for my base it didn't bog down the motor like maple would, however, the base wasn't wide enough to accomodate the large legs.No biggie:Rockler sells an extension table for this model that I am considering buying.

I wish they would have included mounting hardware (like my Delta drill press), so that I could mount it without any further trips to the hardware store. ... Read more

From the moment you get your hands on it, you'll appreciate thequality of this router. The handles offer total comfort and confidenceas you guide this 11-1/4-pound beauty around. Its soft start means nojerking, even when you start it at its peak speed of 22,000 rpm (itsbottom range is 8,000 rpm). The 15 amp motor is quieter than you'dexpect in a router this size, and the rack-and-pinion depth adjustmentDeWalt is known and loved for comes equipped with a magnified scale anda micro fine-adjustment knob. The plunge mechanism is smooth assilk--better than on routers twice the price--and it would serveperfectly in a table or for freehand work. The 625 comes with 1/2- and1/4-inch collets, and when it's time to change the bit, you'll reallyappreciate the spindle-lock button; it's a big square with a fingerdepression, unlike most other routers that offer either two wrenches towrestle with or a small, sharp spindle-lock pin that leaves a red dentin your finger. 4-0 out of 5 stars Power+Plunge=DW625
I have used several routers over the past few years, and I must say that the DW625 is easily the best of the bunch.

Its smooth, powerful, and easy to run.I heard some bad reviews on some of the controls, but I have had no problems.I find the controls intuitive and easy to operate.

    Try it...you'll like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superior power, funky ergonomics
I needed a versatile router that would spend about 2/3 of its working life mounted in a table, and one that I didn't have to worry about (power, reliability, reputation). The DW625 has fit the bill admirably. I especially appreciate the soft-start feature, something I really didn't appreciate before I turned it on. This machine provides enough torque that you need some warning as it spins up, lest you end up chasing it across your benchtop or removing it from your spleen. The soft-start feature takes care of that nicely.

I have used it in a few different materials so far, and I don't really notice a change in the pitch of the motor, which tells me it's not working all that hard. I've even been slightly stupid in taking out too much material in one pass, and it doesn't seem to care. Cutting through Melamine was perfectly clean with absolutely no tear-out (good quality bit, medium speed range).

My only minor complaint is the placement of the off/on switch. It's on the handle, and you need to slide it up and down to actuate it. Not necessarily a bad idea, but it requires a fair amount of effort--and dexterity-- to safely lock it in the on or off position. In this regard, the Porter Cable 2HP router is superior. However, I needed the power, and since I won't notice this inconvenience most of the time (since it will be table-mounted), I decided I could live with it, since otherwise it's an excellent tool.

Despite its mass and size, it does an incredibly nice job in or out of the table. I think it'll outlast me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Machine
I own several routers, both fixed base and plunge style, and I can say, "this is the cream of the crop!"
The 625 has excellent balance and feels much lighter than the advertised weight. It has power to spare, and with a sharp bit it routs any and all woods like a knife cutting through butter! The only router to come close to this one is the DEWALT 621.
I have only one small minor criticism of the 625 and that is the lack of a dust pickup, like it's little brother (sister) the 621. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB is one member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it.

Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Router But It Has ON/OFF Switch Problems
I have owned this router for 1 year now and for the most part I like it. However I have been having a problem with the ON/OFF switch. I was just about to take it to BOSCH Service when I decided to read some wood forums on the product. It appears that I am not the only one to have this problem. Several posts on different forums and even on this Amazon site, people are complaining of the ON/OFF switch failing or working intermittently. One reviewer said that you can gently remove the switch and clean it, which I did, this corrected the problem but it appears that the switch is prone to this dust problem. Other then the switch problem that can be frustrating especially when you're in the middle of using it, the router performs well. The variable speed and soft start are very nice. If Bosch fixes the switch problem this is easy a 5 star product.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good router but...
Everyone raves about the Bosch 1617EVS router, primarily
because it has a good depth adjustment mechanism. However, as a
previous reviewer pointed out, the On/Off switch is flakey.
Mine died for the first time very quickly after I started using
the router. I had to bring it to a repair place and let it sit
for a month while the switch was on order. It just died again.
I suppose it is best to get two routers, so you have one to use
while the other is in the shop.

1-0 out of 5 stars Undelivered Promises
The Bosch 1617EVS is an attractive router package; however, Amazon is unable to deliver on it! Don't believe the "ships in 24 hours" claim. I've ordered the item on December 31st and since then I've been receiving "delay in shipment" notices. The one I received today promises me that I will not see the ordered router until the March time frame. Should I wait, they ask? Unfortunately, along with the router I've ordered several accessories. All of the accessories have arrived, but not the router. Do I wait? Do I cancel and return the accessories? Do I postpone the projects for which I've scheduled the router based on Amazon's false delivery date promise? What would you do? Go to Home Depot and buy a router that you can feel and touch and take home with you?

I've been shopping with Amazon for many years and this is the first major let down on their part. Has Amazon outgrown its commitment to its customer base? ... Read more

JET JWL-1236 / 708352G 12" Variable Speed Wood Lathe with Stand

    list price: $799.00

    Editorial Review

To woodworkers who know the reputation of Jet products, the merit of this 12-inch variable-speed lathe should come as no surprise. Start with the guts of any tool, the motor. Prewired for 115 volts and fully encased in a metal housing for longer life, its 3/4-horses turn material at 500 to 3,000 rpm, depending on which of the six speeds you select. The cast-iron lathe bed, headstock, and tailstock provide superior vibration dampening and durability, while the heavy-gauge steel components and stand give rigid support. Pivoting 90 degrees for outboard turning of up to 16-1/2 inches on larger projects, the MT-2 headstock protects a Reeves drive pulley system with which we made quick and easy speed changes. Down on the other end, the hollow tailstock allows for longer hole bores and houses a live center, a luxury standard on all Jet lathes not found in much of the competition.

You'll love the versatility that comes with 34-1/2 inches between working centers and a 12-inch swing capability over the bed (8-3/4 inches over the tool-rest base). All adjustments, whether extending the ram its full 2-1/4 inches or sliding the 12-inch tool rest, move fluidly and clamp down tight with little effort. Designed for use over the long haul, this tool has all the qualities professional woodworkers demand. --Justin Paul ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars entry level lathe
I've owned a Jet 1236 for the past 4 years and it has given me fairly good service over that time. The two major problems I've had were a broken tool rest and a broken banjo.I was able to get a replacement banjo(tool rest support) quickly from the dealer at a reasonable cost. The major deficits the lathe has include noise level, vibration if the wood is not properly balanced, small swing over the bed(max of 12" diameter), and lack of power with heavy wood removal.Maybe I've just outgrown this machine!

2-0 out of 5 stars Lathe usage
Have been using the Jet JWL-1236 for about 8 months now. The first thing you should do is throw the base away and build one with substance. Might be satisfactory for turning spindles but not for anything with any kind of mass unless you secure it to the floor. I do a lot of bowl turning and anything you might have to turn outboard is a joke, especially with the equipment that is furnished with the lathe. Unless you have the capability to ensure something is pretty well balanced don't try to turn it outboard. One problem is that the lathe speed is still too fast even at its lowest setting and the ON/OFF switch is in the wrong place if you have to get to it in a hurry. If you are truly interested in turning bowls of any size save your money and buy something a little more substantial in size and has a true variable speed capability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Lathe for the price
I looked at all the competitors to the Jet, and they couldn't sway me away from the Jet.It's a good solid machine.I do mostly faceplate work, so the limited (34 1/2") distance between centers didn't factor into my decision.I had considered the Delta 46-700, but was told they had bearing problems, and it was a much lighter weight machine.Time will tell, regarding the Reeves drive, but it seems very smooth when changing speeds.Assembly was a snap, got the bed and motor up on the stand by simply using another table at the same elevation as a helper. The tool rest base and tailstock move smoothly, and lock down frmly with minimal effort. The only improvements in the total package I can see are replacing the 6 inch faceplate with the 3 inch version, and maybe offering the 6 inch tool rest instead of the 12 inch (why do they assume that you are gonna turn spindles??).Also, I don't really like the placement of the on-off switch...its too low for me.As with my old lathe, I will rewire this Jet to provide reversing capability, as soon as the 3 year (hope I can wait!!) is out.I don't understand why Jet, Delta, and others don't provide reversing...it's a 5 dollar modification.Spinning the other way makes for better finishes while sanding. All in all, the Jet is a great machine...highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
I've had this compressor for about a year and like it. It was ready to go after adding the oil which was included.I bought it when I switched to air tool sanding and it easily keeps up with that job.
The drain is a little hard access. The manual advises you to releive the air pressure though the quick relief valve, automatically down to about 10PSI, then opening the water drain and closing the valve before restarting.

1-0 out of 5 stars pump bearings leaking after one year of light duty use
after one year of light duty use pump bearing leaking oil and fly wheel belt won't ride true . unit now in shop waiting for parts, down time three to four weeks, had to borrow small compressor from family member. I would not recomend this compressor at all. A better compressor would be home depots huskey 60 gal a much better built unit at 399.00 pump is solid cast iron and the tubing is copper vs alumium that poter cable uses .I think poter cable should stick to building beltsanders, routers,& sawzalls
