Makita LS1013 Dual Slide Compound 10" Miter Saw Kit Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware (25 February, 2003) list price: $1,085.00 -- our price: $449.34 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita's 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita's saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design might be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you're holding the handle. The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material--a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. The saw's table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider crosscuts. The saw's nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electric brake, however; they're user-friendly features that make a big difference, especially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw also has a well-designed work clamp that lets you make precision cuts on small pieces without having to get your fingers too close to the blade. Like most sliders, this saw features a depth-stop mechanism in case you have to make a few quick dado cuts on a job site. And, for home shop users, this saw also gives you the added option of a release safety button that pulls out and locks the saw off. --Jon Groebner ... Read more Features Reviews (77)

Delta 36-843 "Limited Edition" 3 HP Unisaw with 50" Biesemeyer Fence Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $2,800.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Among serious woodworkers who demand top quality tools in their shop, there's no debating the desirability of a Delta Unisaw. It's one of the few cabinet-styletable saws still made in the USA, and the benefits show up in the quality of the tool'sworkmanship and finish. The Unisaw's smooth operation can be traced to the widelyspaced, massive trunions which are machined from fine-grained cast iron and arecompletely adjustable to ensure the best possible alignment. The heavy cast-iron tableadds to the saw's stability and features a 3/8-by-3/4-inch T-slot on each side of the blade.Include the two extension wings and you have a generous cast-iron table surface of 36 by27 inches. The single-phase, 3-horsepower induction motor is housed in a dust-sealed, fan-cooledenclosure, and power is transferred smoothly and efficiently via a positive-tractionthree-belt V-drive system. The motor cover has handy storage slots for your miter gaugeand table inserts, but more importantly, the inside is designed to maximize the airflow fordust collection and, in conjunction with the redesigned cabinet interior, funnel all the dustefficiently to the 4-inch dust port without a hitch. This model comes with a 50-inch commercial Biesemeyer fence system andaccompanying table board. While the basics of this popular fence design have beencopied by competing saw and fence manufacturers, there's still nothing quite like theoriginal. The Biesemeyer is made of the heaviest gauge steel we've seen on a T-squaretype fence, and the fence face itself is made of laminated 9-ply Finland birch, gluedsolidly in place--a construction method that eliminates warpage in the fence line that thebolts or screws used in competing systems can cause. The fence locks to the front guiderail using Biesemeyer's three-point locking system and automatically aligns the fenceparallel to the blade when the lever is tightened down, providing reliable accuracy everytime. --Brian Trinen ... You will want to consider where you will put it and how you will get it there. With the 50" fence it is very big, and your 220V needs to be located correctly so the cord can reach and you are not tripping on it.These are things I did not think clear through before the saw arrived and I should have. The other thing to think about is that it is extremely heavy, and it ships in effectively one piece.I needed a lot of help getting it into a basement shop, and after I got it there I decided I could never move. Assembly is simple, and everything is rock solid. After you have it in place, all that weight (and the associated power) is a wonderfull thing. I am very happy with the fence, and have no complaints about the mobile base, though if the floor is not level, it does not have much clearance when you are moving the saw.
It you're comtemplating over a smaller contractors saw for your shop or a cabinet saw, go with the cabinet saw if you have the room, you won't be disappointed.I was so close to buying a Delta contractors saw, I'm glad I laid out the additional funds and went with the cabinet saw. The saw is heavy, you need one or two friends to get the saw off of the skid and onto the mobile base and a friend to help you align the cast iron extension wings.Other than that the saw can be put together by one person. It took me about 5 hours total, working over a couple of days to get it together. The saw cuts straight and true and needed very little initial alignment. The fence made by Besymeiser is the best, you can't go wrong with it.I've added the Delta outfeed table to it (see review), and would highly recommend adding some kind of outfeed table to the saw to make cutting long board that much more easier. Overall I am very happy with the saw, it is the backbone of my shop. I Would buy another Delta cabinet saw if I had to, but I believe I'll never have to replace this saw. ... JET JWTS-10CW2-PFX / 708305GK 10" Table Saw with Two Cast Iron Wings & 52" Homeshop Xacta Fence Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $1,119.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (19)
I suggest you buy the mobile base when you purchase it.I don't plan to move mine much, but I wouldn't want to have to movethis thing an inch without one.It seems like it would be easiest to assemble right on the stand like I did. Now that is together, it is a powerhouse!!!I look forward to using it for years to come.
The fence, though, needs help.My front support rail was badly warped and the rail sight (small plastic marker for setting measurements) was cracked, misprinted (not parallel to marks on rule), and simply didn't fit on the rail. The instructions are not very good and there was no list of included hardware so I could identify the various pieces.Alignment of this fence to the saw was a real pain in the neck.It should be noted that the Exacta fence is not manufactured by Jet but *for* them. Once assembled with replacement parts (good customer service), the fence works wonderfully.Measurements are right on the money, first try.The fence is extremely rigid and moves very smoothly. I gave the saw 5 stars because assembly is a one-time chore and the real measure is day-to-day useability. This saw is a great value, particularly since I only paid (price).I would buy it again in a heartbeat. ... JET 708115GK / JWBS-14CSW 14" Bandsaw with Enclosed Stand includes Rip Fence and Miter Gauge a $139.99 Value Tools & Hardware list price: $729.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review JET's 14-inch band saw offers woodworkers two big improvementsover other band saws in this class. The blade guide with light springtension inside the mechanism was the first thing we noticed. It staysin place when you loosen it instead of crashing down on the tabletop(or your fingers) as guides from other saws can. This allows fortwo-handed height adjustment, letting you set the guide precisely whereyou want it quickly and easily. The blade guide also offersoil-impregnated plastic parts rather than steel, so the blade stayssharp longer. We were also impressed with the blade tracking device, which locks in place so there's no need for readjustment after the testrun. The saw has a 1-horsepower motor that's fan cooled and fullyenclosed for dust protection, and computer-balanced, die-cast aluminumwheels for smooth operation. The 15-by-15-inch cast-iron table isslightly larger than tables on competing band saws, and it tilts 45degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left. Other advantages include a heavy-gauge metal housing and a powdercoating (rather than paint), meaning the saw will hold up to regularusage and still look good. Another user-friendly feature is thequick-connect electrical plug, so you don't have to follow long cordsto their outlets before each blade change. Band saws aren't thedustiest machines around, so the 2-inch dust port for the shop vacseems just right, but a 2- to 4-inch converter can be added for usewith a more serious shop-dust-collection system. This saw is best forshops doing smaller pieces or serious hobbyists who want to do finework. Owners will enjoy quick and easy setup by following a clear setof instructions. --Nancy Gleason ... Milwaukee 0512-25 14.4-Volt 1/2" Drill Kit with Flashlightight Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $294.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Power Plus battery pack is one of the highlights of Milwaukee's 14.4-volt cordless drill. The battery is reversible, which helps balance the tool for the user and also makes it easier to get into tight spots. The adjustable clutch is easy to use and gives you two speed ranges to choose from: low gear for more power (maximum: 280 in./lb. of torque) when driving screws and high gear for more speed when drilling. There are also 19 different superprecise clutch positions--so you can match the torque to the application, minimizing the risk of stripping screws or breaking off heads. The thin, soft-grip handle seems to absorb some of the vibrations, making the drill comfortable both to hold and use. The 1/2-inch keyless chuck is a bonus feature, holding a larger bit than most of the 3/8-inch competition in the 14.4 market. The forward/reverse function takes some getting used to: it's a switch, as opposed to the more common two-sided buttons you find on most other brands, and, depending on hand size, can be a bit tricky to reach with your trigger hand. The kit also includes a handy light with a flexible head, so in the odd case you have to work in the dark, you've got a good light to take with you. This is a great tool for either the professional or the serious do-it-yourselfer. Excellent work, Milwaukee. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more Features Reviews (18)

Bosch 1587AVSP Progressor Top-Handle Jig Saw Kit Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware -- our price: $134.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more Features Reviews (85)

JET JDP-17MF / 354169 Drill Press Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $579.00 -- our price: $399.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A staple in the professional woodshop, a drill press should be able to perform grunt work, yet quickly adjust for precision applications. Jet's 16-1/2-inch model does just that. Made of cast-iron and heavy-gauge steel components, this press spins bits up to 5/8 of an inch with 16 speeds from 200 to 3,630 rpm. A 3/4-horsepower induction motor drives the belts, and, for your convenience, it can run off either 115-volt outlets (for which it comes prewired) or 230-volt sources. The large 13-3/4-inch worktable glides easily with rack-and-pinion adjustment and tilts 45 degrees right or left to accommodate your needs. Two features we like are the positive depth stop on the left side, which quickly adjusts and locks in place via three nuts, and the built-in lamp, a nice touch some competitors don't offer. Changing belt position is a snap after flipping open the hinged metal cover, and, to personalize the press for your comfort and peace of mind, you can adjust the tension on the spindle return spring, as well as lock out the start button to protect others in your absence. This industrial-style drill press is a tool any professional or serious home woodworker can depend on. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (37)

Delta 37-1956" Professional Jointer Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $670.97 -- our price: $519.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For those seeking a midsize jointer for the long haul, this 6-inch model is a great find suitable for the professional workplace or serious home woodshop. Powered by Delta's trusted 1-horsepower induction motor, the three-blade drum spins quietly in its cast-iron bed. Adjusting with rack-and-pinion precision, the fence tilts 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees for beveling and chamfering applications. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side--a feature for which we have much respect. Thanks to industrial-grade infeed and outfeed tables, even longer 6-inch-wide planks get the support they need as you remove up to 1/2 of an inch of material to the collection port on each pass. So you want to increase your edge on the competition? Delta feels the same way. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (39)
Suggestion: hold off until you can afford the next Delta model up (I believe that is the 360). It may be 2X the price, but well worth it. Also, the Ridgid is an outstanding buy at $399.00.
There is no question this is a great 6" jointer, as other reviewers have said. However, there is a design flaw (are you listening, Delta?) mentioned by other reviewers. Why should I have to reverse the pulleys to get the belt properly aligned?ESPECIALLY SINCE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT! There, I feel better. I also have another minor complaint with setup. The third bolt that attaches to the base through the dust chute could be a challenge for big armed, big handed guys.I managed, with very little wiggle room. Overall, results with this jointer are impressive. Out of the box, the Delta performed flawlessly. No question, I'd give this product 5 stars, if not for the above-mentioned gripes. I highly recommend purchasing a Delta 22-580K 13" planer to complement the jointer.I did, with no regrets. Now that's a fine product, worthy of 5 stars. At the end of the day, the jointer and planer make a fine team. Asin: B00004Y73O |

Delta 37-350ADJ-208" Precision Jointer Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $2,155.00 -- our price: $1,349.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When you're ready to step up to the professional woodworking scene, this jointer from Delta helps design your calling card. Materials up to 8 inches wide glide across the cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables. The fence adjusts with rack-and-pinion precision, beveling 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees to give you the angle your work demands. We appreciate the easy height-adjustment lever that keeps the guide close to the three-blade drum--no matter what the position--through its 1/2-inch range via a parallelogram support structure. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side. Driven by a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for use with a built-in dust collector port, this jointer will complement any woodshop. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (20)
The 8 inch capacity may seem limiting, but in reality this is not an issue. The parallelogram mechanism for both the in feed and out feed tables is superior to anything I've ever seen and it makes altering the depth of cut a snap. This machine is a beast as far as weight but a jointer needs to be heavy... really heavy.Nothing is more frustrating than a lightweight jointer "walking away" from you as you try and straighten lumber. My previous shop was in a basement, the DJ 20 slid down the stairs (with three people controlling it) like a dream. However, getting it out was interesting and took four strong men (three at the bottom pushing and one at the top pulling), ramps, dollies, tie down straps and a healthy amount of grunting... it was a miracle the three of us behind the machine came out alive. One recommendation I would make for anyone considering the purchase of this machine is to get the mobile base. You may have the luxury of a permanent location for this machine, but the mobile base makes moving this monster so much easier. The mobile base also means someone is not reefing on your perfectly aligned in feed and out feed tables to get it to budge.Others have mentioned a problem with vibration.Mine had this issue when I first bought it, but I corrected this by ensuring that the motor and cutter head pulleys are in alignment.Dust collection is not an issue but don't buy the Delta attachment, as others have indicated it is for a 5" diameter hose.Instead buy a $5.00 plastic one and screw it to the cabinet, works just as well if not better. When I purchased mine it was made in Brazil by Invicta.I'm not sure where the current models are made, but if Delta was smart they would not mess with something that was basically perfect and a standard piece of woodworking equipment in any shop dealing with solid wood.Highly recommended.

JET JBM-5 / 708580 Benchtop Mortiser Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $499.00 -- our price: $249.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul ... DEWALT DW625 3 HP Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $546.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review From the moment you get your hands on it, you'll appreciate thequality of this router. The handles offer total comfort and confidenceas you guide this 11-1/4-pound beauty around. Its soft start means nojerking, even when you start it at its peak speed of 22,000 rpm (itsbottom range is 8,000 rpm). The 15 amp motor is quieter than you'dexpect in a router this size, and the rack-and-pinion depth adjustmentDeWalt is known and loved for comes equipped with a magnified scale anda micro fine-adjustment knob. The plunge mechanism is smooth assilk--better than on routers twice the price--and it would serveperfectly in a table or for freehand work. The 625 comes with 1/2- and1/4-inch collets, and when it's time to change the bit, you'll reallyappreciate the spindle-lock button; it's a big square with a fingerdepression, unlike most other routers that offer either two wrenches towrestle with or a small, sharp spindle-lock pin that leaves a red dentin your finger. Other nice features: one side of the base is roundedand one is flat, and it comes with a dust-extraction adapter. Thispiece of machinery truly is as close to flawless as a router can get.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more Features Reviews (13)
Its smooth, powerful, and easy to run.I heard some bad reviews on some of the controls, but I have had no problems.I find the controls intuitive and easy to operate. Try it...you'll like it.
I have used it in a few different materials so far, and I don't really notice a change in the pitch of the motor, which tells me it's not working all that hard. I've even been slightly stupid in taking out too much material in one pass, and it doesn't seem to care. Cutting through Melamine was perfectly clean with absolutely no tear-out (good quality bit, medium speed range). My only minor complaint is the placement of the off/on switch. It's on the handle, and you need to slide it up and down to actuate it. Not necessarily a bad idea, but it requires a fair amount of effort--and dexterity-- to safely lock it in the on or off position. In this regard, the Porter Cable 2HP router is superior. However, I needed the power, and since I won't notice this inconvenience most of the time (since it will be table-mounted), I decided I could live with it, since otherwise it's an excellent tool. Despite its mass and size, it does an incredibly nice job in or out of the table. I think it'll outlast me.

Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4-Horsepower Variable-Speed Router Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware -- our price: $151.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB is one member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... JET JWL-1236 / 708352G 12" Variable Speed Wood Lathe with Stand Average Customer Review: Tools & Hardware list price: $799.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review To woodworkers who know the reputation of Jet products, the merit of this 12-inch variable-speed lathe should come as no surprise. Start with the guts of any tool, the motor. Prewired for 115 volts and fully encased in a metal housing for longer life, its 3/4-horses turn material at 500 to 3,000 rpm, depending on which of the six speeds you select. The cast-iron lathe bed, headstock, and tailstock provide superior vibration dampening and durability, while the heavy-gauge steel components and stand give rigid support. Pivoting 90 degrees for outboard turning of up to 16-1/2 inches on larger projects, the MT-2 headstock protects a Reeves drive pulley system with which we made quick and easy speed changes. Down on the other end, the hollow tailstock allows for longer hole bores and houses a live center, a luxury standard on all Jet lathes not found in much of the competition. You'll love the versatility that comes with 34-1/2 inches between working centers and a 12-inch swing capability over the bed (8-3/4 inches over the tool-rest base). All adjustments, whether extending the ram its full 2-1/4 inches or sliding the 12-inch tool rest, move fluidly and clamp down tight with little effort. Designed for use over the long haul, this tool has all the qualities professional woodworkers demand. --Justin Paul ... Read more Features Reviews (9)
