    Editorial Review

So you've found an entire block of condemned Victorian houses, and the mayor has given you exclusive rights to the flooring in exchange for--oh, let's just say--a bit of support in his re-election campaign. With that still two years off, the only problem facing you now is removing the random pits, warps, and other blemishes of this salvage-lumber gold mine. For professional tasks that mock portable planers' capabilities, Jet's 15-inch enclosed-stand model gives you smooth surfaces as long as you keep it fed. Powered by a completely enclosed, 3-horsepower induction motor, it efficiently converts 230 volts into 13,500 cuts per minute at 4,500 rpm. The positive gear drive system adjusts depth quickly, and, with its smooth-cranking hand wheel, you can slice up to 1/8 of an inch off boards as large as 15 inches wide and 6 inches thick. Infeed and outfeed tables use three industrial steel rollers each to ensure smooth transfer from the planer's nonslip serrated intake all the way through the knives. You'll appreciate features like the smaller return rollers on top for handling large planks and the magnetic safety switch that prevents the machine from automatically turning on after power outages. Set on four heavy-duty, cam-lock casters, it easily rolls into position and stays where you place it. Go on and take the offer to gut those houses this year. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reliability and craftsmanship
I purchased the Jet 15" Planer after many trips to my local cabinet shop. After initially being up in the air over which planer to purchase, Jet, Powermatic, grizzly, or delta. I was able to obtain several excellent recommendation for the Jet and Powermatic planers (for those of you who may not know Jet bought out Powermatic) and not a single negative one.Everyone I talked to especially liked the way the planer knives were set using jack screws and the quality of the castings. This greatly reduces the amount of time changing blades. My local cabinet shop has been running the same set of blades for 8 months and they are still sharp and true. That's about 100 kitchens later. I did however find negative and postive comments about all the other brands. Some quite serious. My planer arrived via fed ex freight, in an OSB crate, within 7 days from the time I placed the order. The driver had a pallet jack and hydaulic lift gate and positioned the planer right where I wanted it. It weighs about 500lbs. It does have wheels so now that it is on the concrete floor I can move it easily. The crate was damaged in shipping but the planer was not. The instructions for setup were straight forward, I received everything including touch up paint in the package.Since I purchased the jet Planer I have also bought a Jet 6" jointer and 1 hp. dust colletor a serious must while using the planer, as without it, you seem to be regurgitating shavings expelled by the planer. All of the jet products I have purchased to date have been of excellent quality.I will definitely look at them for my future carpentry, and cabinetry needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent machine with some minor flaws
The machine is excellent. It produces smooth snipe-free boards. The out-feed rollers are cheap and out-of-round requiring you to adjust the outfeeds "lower" than the main table. The wheels in the bottom only allow the machine to roll in and out and are NOT a substitute for a mobile base.Be warned, that if you want to turn this machine in your shop, you will need to buy an mobile base.Jet could have easily added one outboard pivoting roller to solve this usability glitch.

5-0 out of 5 stars great workmanship
The JET 15 inch planner was delevered approximatly one week after I placed my order. Be prepared to have a couple of strong friends when you unpack this heavy machine. It comes shipped on its side, so you must lift it up. In my case the truck driver was just as anxious as I was to see what we had. He helped me get the machine on its feet. I was missing one of the rollers, the extra set of blades was bent, and the pulley guard was also bent in the shipping. I called JET and had all the missing and damaged parts in one week. The first test was a piece of oak of a Morris chair I am constructing. The machine needed no adjusting and was true to square from the factory. The pieces I planned needed no sanding and no snipe at all. I am very happy with the machine and the Company in getting the parts I needed witin a week. I wanted a machine that was moble and havingthe JET planner already on wheels was one thing that interested me.My next purchase will be a cabinet saw and I certainly will lean to a JET saw over others. ... JET's planer/molder handles material up to 13 inches wide andup to 6 inches in height. The tool's 1-1/2-horse, 110-watt motor (youcan easily rewire it to 230 watts) spins the three-knife cutterhead.Depending on the application, the machine runs 10 to 20 board feet perminute. The motor is fan-cooled, too, so it doesn't overheat. Thecast-iron table lends plenty of heft and contact surface, while therubberized infeed and outfeed rollers support the work without marringit. As is standard with most planers, it comes with an incorporateddust chute--so it's simple to hook up to a dust collector and keep theshop clean. Four lockable casters (not standard) make it easy tomaneuver the tool in a tight shop. For people working in homerestoration, this tool is a godsend. To match new replacement moldingwith the existing material, copy the profile of the existing molding, get custom knives made, and cut your own replacement. A helpful videois included that walks you through the process of changing and settingblades. This is unquestionably a solid tool, ideal for home woodworkerslooking to step up from a benchtop unit, and especially for remodelersand This Old House-type guys who need an good way to accuratelymatch existing trim. --Jon Groebner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, excellent results
My JPM-13 is about a year old, and is being used to restore an old house.I use 5/4 and 8/4 fir and 5/4 maple exclusively.I make the door/window trim (1 1/8 thick x 5 in wide) and have custom knives made. This is not a professional machine, but gives GREAT results on the maple molding, with no sanding needed!I would recommend it to anyone that would use it as a hobby machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars ACE
I haven't used mine to cut molding yet, but the machine is under powered for rough cut lumber. If you just have a board or two to thickness plane it is functional, but for big jobs forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine
I've had my JPM 13 for over a year and haven't a single complaint. It's a workhorse that does a fine job of both planing and molding. It's way better than those flimsy, 12 1/2-inch portable planers. I've run a few hundred board feet of curly maple and red and white oak through it, and it does a great job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value, user friendly, planing and moulding
I have a small full time cabinet shop, and needed a new planer, and wanted a moulder for a long time.I purchased this model and have been very happy with the performance. It is much quieter than the portable machine I had, and planes the material much faster with a better quality cut than the portable models. The first time I set up the crown moulding cutters, it took me about 1/2 hour to set up the machine and make a bed to guide the boards through, and the mouldings that came out are a better quality than those that I have purchased at my local lumber yard.I also found that the knives for the 13" Grizzley moulder are interchangable with the Jet, so finding new knives is a piece of cake. For the hobbyist or the small shop that can't afford a dedicated planer and dedicated moulder, the Jet is the answer.Great machine

4-0 out of 5 stars maybe try the 16 inch
When I bought this, about a year ago, it seemed like a good choice for a home hobbiest. The 15 inch Delta,Jet,or Powermatic, would have been nicer, but they were a couple hundred dollars or so more money. I think it works great. The rollers are real grabby, and I get 3 inches of snipe on each end, maybe it is user error or machine setup, I don't know. The mobile base is nice, but it doesn't lock down as hard as it should, but good enough.I would look at the new 16 inch model now which is almost the same price. Most wood is never over 13 inches, but for gluing boards together 16 inches would be a lot nicer. The outfeed and infeed rollers are ok.The problem is, the table moves up and down instead of the cutter.I didn't realize how inconvenient this is (when using additional rollers). I have never used the molder.Maybe someday I will, that would be fun.For planing only, I would look at the new 16 inch 3 hp Jet planer.I wish they would have had it a year ago, but I am very satisfied with what I have too.

4-0 out of 5 stars JPM-13CS is a good deal, but the options will get you.
    JPM-13CS

I purchased my JPM-13CS in October of 2000.I promptly wired it for 220v.It is still going strong.I have done several hundred feet of lumber (birch, brown maple, basswood, pine, hackberry, oak) with it so far and I am still on the original blades. It does a nice, smooth job, but max planing speed is only 20 feet per minute. I seldom get snipe, and in 3 years of use, I haven't figured out exactly why some boards do, and some don't.Narrow boards (about 4 inch or less) seem to do it more so than wide boards.
I purchased a molding set for tongue and groove, and made a few hundred feet of basswood paneling.I strongly discourage anyone from going this route to make paneling. It is a slow, tedious process, and the available T&G set does not make the V chamfer groove, so an extra step through the router to make the chamfer was needed.I learned my lesson and bought a router bit set that makes the tongue and grove with the v chamfer.
I tried using this planer without a dust collector. It got about 2 feet and jammed without the collector.
I also purchased the optional "Curved Molding" table for the planer.I have not used it yet, but the attachment is very expensive for what it is.(A sheet of 3/4" white Teflon or plastic with slotted holes, and some bearings and bolts) ... Read more
