Editorial Review

We can't think of anything we'd want to add to this little hummer. It's incredible what B&D has engineered into this system (we don't think it's fair to call it a "screwdriver"). The 5-foot tape measure fits on board, or you can remove it for separate use. Dual speed range lets you drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower speed. A 23-position clutch, just like what's on the big boys, will keep you from stripping your screws. But get this: Unlike conventional cordless screwdrivers and regular power drills, this tool's handle easily locks in three positions for tight areas and awkward spots. Genius! And just like the "real" drills, this one's got an accessible forward/reverse rocker switch for backing screws out, too. Here's something, though, that the big-boy drill makers should pick up: It's got on integrated light so you can always see your work surface clearly. For the money, we haven't seen anything like it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • On-board bit storage conveniently holds a 1/16" pilot bit and double-ended screwdriving bit
  • 6-volt drill and screwdriver, tape measure, light, and more in one convenient cordless tool
  • 2-speed gear box gives you a low speed for screwdriving and high speed for drilling
  • 3-position pivoting action for maximum flexibility and versatility in tight areas
  • Integrated light with separate on/off switch illuminates dark work areas

5-0 out of 5 stars Form plus function: Works as good as it looks
The benefits of cordless power tools are obvious, but who says you need to pay hundreds of dollars to get the job done if you live in an apartment and don't have a contractor's license?

For $25, this is a super addition to any toolbox -- or kitchen cabinet. This is a great gift idea for dad -- or mom, for that matter.

Here's why:

* Quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash. A nice, tight grip.
* Multiple forward or reverse speeds at the click of a button. Torque control on the collar is easy to adjust and visual icons make it easy to figure out which one is best depending on whether you're using a screw or drill bit. Sweet.
* From 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge. Because it can take about six hours to re-charge, it's a good idea to leave this plugged into an outlet in the kitchen, bathroom or garage (but not longer than 3-4 weeks without use to avoid reduction in battery life).
* Ability to pivot the position of the handle or angle is big plus and great way to avoid carpel tunnel pain.
* The LED light, built-in removable tape measure and bit holder on the handle are fluff, but add to the coolness factor.
* Surprisingly light weight for it's rather large size.

So far no complaints. Price, form and function add up to a solid 5-star rating. You simply can't go wrong here.

3-0 out of 5 stars a question...
...it seems an excellent work tool!... but does it work at 220V AC? I would love to buy it... tell me about this please...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product!
This is one of those products where you say "Cool" at first glance. Then when you use it, it just gets better. Not only is this a nice reversible cordless drill (for small jobs), but it has the flexible handle...and a handy place to hold the extra bits, and the built in tape measure! Now, it will never replace your 3 horsepower Sears Craftsman bad-boy for the big jobs (i.e. building a house), but the Pivot Plus is definitely handy around the house! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best K-body clamp made
I bought a set of 4 ((2) 48" and (2) 24") Jorgensen K-body clamps to do cabinet doors.I compared side by side with the Bessey k-bodies and these came out ahead far enough to make my choice for me.(1) larger face area to spread the load, (2) beefier I-beam between the clamp faces to withstand more torque and pressure, (3) a removable "foot" at the end that keeps the clamp level and allows the adjustable face to slide without lifting the clamped object AND lets you take the adjustable face off and reverse it for a spreader function, (4)The price was comparable, and (5) they matched the rest of my Jorgensen F-body clamps (of which I have a bunch) so my collection stays color coordinated :-)The two draw backs I would mention are (1) they are heavy and bulky so will not always be the first you reach for on simple clamping tasks (just the ones you want really square and solid) and (2) if you back the hand screw all the way out, then slam the jaw home, it will jam shut and you may have to get a screw driver and pry the locking pawl back a bit to get the jaw to release. Not much more than an annoyance but usually happens when you are trying to clamp one handed and are holding your work with the other. This usually results in some severe mumbling while you lay everything down, unstick the clamp, then try to set it all up again (still one handed).Over all they are more than worth it and I intend to purchase more as my budget allows!

4-0 out of 5 stars Metal parts are cast metal, not very strong.
I bought two of the 48" model clamps and had one snap in a way to make the clamp useless. The part that snapped was inside the clamp side, it was made of a cast metal of some sort.It actually broke into two, plus two small fragments of metal that I found sitting on the ground under it. The clamp was holding Ok, but then I heard a pop, and found that the clamp had given up. I will be curious about the warranty on this clamp. I noticed that the adds here in Tool Crib don't mention a warranty, so I will have to get in touch with the manufacture to see if there is one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent clamping- "feet" are the best feature
I have a few Bessey K-body clamps, which until I got 8 of these Jorgensens, were the first thing I would grab. The Cabinet Masters have the advantage of that nifty "foot" at the bar end, which match the opposite fixed clamp end in depth. This makes the Cabinet Masters superior, in my opinion.I just lay the Clamp Masters on the floor, place my (usually large and cumbersome) pieces on top of the bars, slip in some scraps/cork/cauls between the pieces and the clamping surfaces, then slide the clamp towards the edge. The feet allow this to slide smoothly. With the Besseys, I have to physically lift the bar ends (and the entire weight of the assembly) in order to move the clamp mechanism. Not fun.Yes, Bessey sells a $25 "foot," which is probalby very useful. But, this is not as useful as a built-in clamp that you won't "misplace" and "do without."

The only annoyance was one clamp that became "jammed" when the slider slid all the way down, touching the fixed clamp surface.Because the knob was turned "fully loose," I could not loosen it to retract the clamp. The locking cam was basically stuck shut.I had to flip the clamp over and drop the bar end onto a 2x4 several times before it unclenched.I guess the warning is don't turn the clamping screws fully CCW or else this might happen the clamp slides shut unexpectedly. The clamp works fine still, so no harm done.

I'm buying more of these, as my last project required the use of every single 48" clamp I had!You can never have too many clamps! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Accutire's new, deluxe digital tire gauge delivers precise tire pressure reading every time--and that's important. While manual tire gauges seem flimsy, sometimes stick, and can give inconsistent results, Accutire's digital gauge is a well-made, confidence-inspiring instrument. The Accutire also delivers impressive consistency: in our tests, we got within plus/minus 1/2 psi each time, something that's not likely to happen with a manual gauge. The Accutire's large back-lit LCD screen is easy to read, too, no matter if you're standing in pitch-black dark or in bright daylight. The gauge measures from 5 to 99 psi, in 1/2-pound increments, and automatically shuts itself off after you use it. Built with a rugged aluminum housing, a rubber nose, and tail guards, this gauge also comes with a handy steel side clip, in case you need to carry yours with you wherever you go. And when it's not in use, you can store the Accutire in its felt-lined, snap-shut case, so it won't get beat up rattling around in your glove box. Accutire's digital gauge costs more than a manual gauge, but with its lifetime lithium battery, it's going to last you a long, long time. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a sturdy and easy-to-use tire gauge
I bought this item back in May of 2001 for the two cars in my house. The tire gauge still works very well, and shows its readings in 0.5 psi increments. As advertised, the large digits are easy to read even in direct sunlight (I just verified that last week!).It works fine even as I'm nearing the fifth year of owning this handy item.It even looks brand-new because the case keeps it safe from scratches, dents, and dings that you are bound to get while it is stowed in the glovebox.

One thing that should be noted: people complained that it's hard to get a good seal to get a consistent and accurate reading.I bet it's because the tire's air nozzle was up or off to the side; I find that it's best when the nozzle is around the 6 or 7 o'clock position so that I can firmly press the gauge straight down. This means you have to crane your head a bit to read the digial measurement, but the important thing is to be able to press down straight & hard onto the tire's nozzle.

I've been using this gauge to check the tires more frequently since the season is changing, and also because I am on the road for longer periods of time. If not for anything, checking the air pressure makes me take a good and up-close look at the tires, and make sure that everything seems okay.At every check-up, this tire gauge was easy to use.I'd definitely buy this again, perhaps as a gift to someone who drives a lot, or as a replacement for myself if needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dead at just over a year old
In addition to the previously discussed problem of getting a good seal, I tried to use it the other day, and found it is totally dead. Replacing the button cells did not correct the problem. Seems the lithium battery failed prematurely. Considering the seal problem, I doubt I will bother to pay shipping & insurance to return it to the manufacturer for repair even if it is within the 5 year warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obtaining Seal is Very Hard
I find it a struggle to get a good seal for proper measurement. My old fashioned mechanical gauge is much easier.
I regret my purchase, it was a complete waste of money. ... Read more

84. DEWALT DW746XB 10" Woodworker's Table Saw with 30" Fence

Editorial Review

The heart of any table saw is the fence, and DeWalt's smooth-sliding, unique double-cam action fence locks down tight and always travels parallel to the blade. The fence face shifts forward, too, giving you the option--if a cut requires it--of extra fence area in front of the blade. The fence can also drop flush to the table for ripping laminates.

In fact, this saw is loaded with great, user-friendly features. There's an oversize, left-side on/off switch that lets you bump the saw off with your knee if you run into trouble while making a cut. It's exactly this sort of attention to detail that wins a lot of people over to DeWalt products. The blade-elevation crank is also set lower on this saw than most, so there's plenty of hand clearance for making blade-height adjustments. Again, this might seem like a minor touch, but think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy metal bevel scale is nice, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws.

The saw's inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor is quiet, cuts down on vibration, and makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard motor saws, a feature you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. And at 254 pounds, this saw has plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. Available in a few different configurations, this model--the DW746XB, with its 30-inch fence and free mobile base--is a smart buy for a woodworker with a small shop. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

  • Cast-iron trunnions and sturdy steel base minimize vibration

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Table Saw
I just got back into woodworking recently and purchased this table saw.I have a friend who is a contractor and he said it is very important to have a solid table saw with a good fence for accurate cuts.I did a lot of research and found this to be the best saw.It has a wide arbor mouth that makes it easy to change the blade. It is left tilt which is more stable, and the motor is induction type, which is the safest and least likely to burn out, and the on/off switch is right next to your left knee so you can turn off the table saw easily after a cut.

I've used this saw for miter projects by adjusting the blade to 45 degrees and they've been dead accurate. You really don't need an expensive Biesmeyer fence or other aftermarket fence. The one that comes with this saw is more than sufficient. You should get a different miter for cross-cuts.I recommend the Rockler adjustable miter. It's more than good enough for a hobbyist (no need for sliding tables or expensive Incra miter). You will need to get some decent saw blades.I picked up a Freud ripping blade and cross-cut blade and they've been fantastic. You'll also need a set of dado heads.I got a nice set for about $80.With this I would strongly suggest the dado head arbor plate, or you can use a zero clearance plate - I did this and used 1/2" dado head setup which is the one I use the most. This makes for extremely smooth dados and rabbets.

I also highly recommend the mobile base that is available.I did not find it necessary to purchase the cast iron extensions. The sheet metal extensions are fine for me.I'm just a hobbyist and don't have the extra space anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Saw but not very Portable
I have owned my DeWalt Woodworkers Saw for about two years now.If you plan on moving this saw from job to job like a contractors saw then think again. It may be called a hybrid but it is heavy enough to require at least two people to move it with all the rails and wings removed. It is lighter than a Unisaw that takes four people to move.
I replaced my oldDelta Contractor saw that the roofer broke by throwing a 10' 2x6 off the roof endo. It broke the cast iron table in half.
That saw was old and tired anyway.I had been using a Unisaw for the past three years for a job saw doing fine woodworking on high end homes. When I first used the DeWalt I noticed that it did not have the power of the Unisaw but it did have a precision fenceand a smooth vibration free feel similar to the Unisaw.
I had to shim the fence a hair to make it flat.Squaring the fence to the table was an odd procedure but seemed to work and the fence has remained square since then. The fence locks down securely without deflection at least as good as the Biesenmeyer fence.A nice feature is that the face of the fence can drop down to the table for ripping thin sheet goods so the sheets won't slip under the fence.I have been using the saw for all my finish carpentry in several fine new homes.I also use it for heavy ripping of salvaged wood that I use for exterior trim.I am very happy with this saw.Considering that I have to move it occasionally to a job it is a good comprimise between a heavy cabinet saw and a contractors saw.It can be hooked up to a vacuum for dust collection with success and that is not an option with a contractors saw.I think DeWalt has listened to woodworkers and came up with a lot of innovative features that make this saw a pleasure to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars A few gripes, but I would still buy it again!
As with most woodworkers, I thought long and hard before buying this saw.I have owned mine now for about 4 months, and have been using it frequently, so I feel I can make a credible review.
My saw arrived quickly and packaged perfectly.Everything was intact and went together quickly and easily. The instructions leave a bit to be desired, but they are adequate. The fence was tough to adjust, more on that later. The table is flat, and the stamped steel extensions do their job, but I am going to upgrade to the cast wings soon.

The fence. And here's the rub.As noted by other negative reviewer's, a saw is only as good as its fence.Apparently Dewalt made some of these with bum fences, so if you call dewalt with a fence complaint, they will immediately offer to send you a replacement for free, which I did.The first fence had a slight bow in it with the middle pushing in toward the blade slightly.I'm talking about maybe 1/64th over the full 31" length. Also, the way the fence is designed, you are supposed to square the fence to the table by pushing it sideways and tightening the torx screws.Well, in order to get mine square, I had to push pretty hard, but I did eventually get it squared to the table...at least when I checked beside the torx screws. At the far end of the fence, it was still out of square about 1/32.Square at one end, not at the other...yep.It's twisted slightly."How do you fix that?" I thought, and called dewalt. My new fence arrived quickly, and...exactly the same.Still slightly bowed and twisted when aligned.Bah!I was frustrated with Dewalt for a few days there.

Then it occurred to me as I was building a custom fence for my miter saw.In order to get the fence perfectly aligned I was shimming it with playing cards and paper to get it perfect."That's how you fix it.You shim it!"Duh.I went to the saw, loosened the 3 T-knobs that hold the fence face on (not the torx screws, this doesn't change the parallel to the blade), and with a single playing card torn a few times and some paper, I had the fence dead perfect in 5 minutes.Perfectly straight, perfectly square.Ahhh, bliss.

Sure, it isn't fun to have to shim your equipment to get it right, but there are very few saws out there that are truly perfect, especially in this price range. It's an easy fix, so shim it and shaddup. Most folks will want to build a sacrificial fence anyway, so just shim it when you put it on.Dewalt is kind enough to use a piece of MDF in the packaging that you can use... (and I did!)

Last thing on the fence.Except for the above issues, this is really an excellent fence.Mine stays parallel to the blade dead on.I don't even have to use my tape measure, I just set the fence and cut, the results are perfect and completely repeatable. Now that I have the face aligned, it truly is a dream to use.

Dust collection.Comes standard with a 90 degree elbow on the dust port that a few people have commented on.If you take this off, dust shoots a few feet out of the back of the saw making a huge mess.If you leave it on, it stacks up on the floor under the saw in a relatively neat pile.Hence the elbow. If you want to hook to a dust collector, remove the elbow and replace it with any 2" to 4" adapter. It fits perfectly, takes literally seconds to install, and works great. No complaints on the dust collection.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase, and would do it again today.I am replacing the standard throat insert with a zero clearance.Do NOT buy the dewalt dado insert, as it rattles and is basically a waste of money. The miter gauge isn't great, but decent.I don't trust it for miters anyway, because that's what the miter saw is for.Mine came with a free mobile base from amazon, which is super high quality, tough as nails, and a breeze to install and use.

Why four stars? The fence, of course. It has its problems, but they aren't fatal flaws. If there wasn't a reasonable fix for it, I would have to go 1 or 2 stars, because I agree; A saw is only as good as its fence.Well, with this saw, a few shims and a little patience, you'll be chuckling every time you hit the start button. ... Editorial Review

This is an innovative tool whose time has most definitely come, making it possible for do-it-yourselfers to have all the power of an air nailer without buying a compressor, fooling with hoses, or putting up with the noise. And unlike other airless nailers, this one requires no fuel cells, and the battery is rechargeable just like those found in other cordless tools. Senco's AirFree brad nailer does the job, maybe with slightly less speed, but the convenience may be more than worth it. There's a slight delay when you press the trigger as the tool revs up, but you'll grow accustomed to the rhythm. It's powered by a 12-volt battery, never needs oil, and features an electronic depth-of-drive adjustment. Senco packs two batteries and a charger along with the nailer in a tough carrying case. You'll fire 600 to 1,000 nails on a charge, and a recharge takes anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. Low vibration and a comfortable grip make this a heck of a tool. 1-0 out of 5 stars HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?
This tool manufactured by Senco is not good quilty and definitly not for professional applications. We have purchased a lot of senco pnumatic products in the past with very good results. This tool had poor results right away in dense woods. After some use the results where sparatic: 1) intrermitent falure to fire, 2) Unpredictable depth in the same piece of material & Jambing often. Both of our Senco AF25 Air free's currently sit out of service.
We have since Purchased sevral Dewalt 18V nailers ( Dewalt has 18V Vs 12V for the Senco ) the Dewalt also has a production seting that allows rapid fire like an air nailer; the Senco on the other hand does not have this feature.
I'm sorry to say, I reccamend a pass on this Senco product.

1-0 out of 5 stars too bad . . .
When this tool works, it's great.Unfortunately, it's not reliable.I sent it back when the gun quit driving nails--revving up, then dying down--and the Senco dealer place fixed it and sent it back. It worked great . . . until today. Now it won't do anything.I called Senco, and they said it needs repair--the clutch is stuck, and they said that if hitting the thing with a hammer a few times won't free it up, it needs to be repaired.I called the closest repair place and the guy, who sounded tired, told me I could put mine in line with the other 6 he has waiting for backordered parts for repair.Since I need the thing to work when I need it to (I've had it for about a year, and use it for building cabinets) instead of when it feels like working, I guess I'll have to buy a compressor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not work out of the box!
I was looking forward to use it and when it finally arrived, it did not work at all with both batteries fully charged. The quality of workmanship was so so compare to other brands. I was really upset and decided to go with the Paslode 18Ga cordless nailer. I own the Paslode framing nailer and it worked great. So what if it needs fuel cells. At least it worked fawlessly.

Bottom line - don't get this gun. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It died after minor use!
After sanding details over a period of two years for about a total of only 12 hours, it up and died yesterday when I used it. out of warranty now for sure, it only got used a little. how much use did it get? I still have most of the original sanding tubes and pads. I switched the brushes - nope.
Meantime, my rotary dremel tool has been through the wringer and is still great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Sander
I have had one of these for about one year.I am in the process of stripping down all of the old oak mouldings in my house which a previous owner of the house had painted. This sander has been extremely useful in sanding down all of the peculiar angles and shapes. You definitely will want to use hearing protection, but then that would be the case with any extended use of a power tool.My only complaint is finding sanding tubes. The Home Depot near me does not carry anything for this sander, not even the sander itself.Amazon does not carry the full range of sanding tubes either.Lowe's is where I go to get the tubes.

Editorial Review

One of the first companies to design plate joiners, DeWalt makes one powerful slot-cutting tool. Some people argue that joiners are joiners, and while it's true that a slot is a slot, how you cut it makes a heck of a lot of difference. What impresses us about DeWalt's plate joiner is the stout, dual rack-and-pinion fence. Operating with striking smoothness, the fence locks tightly in place and ensures that the joiner's blade and fence are always parallel--which means accurate joints every time. The DeWalt is also the only plate joiner on the market with a fully adjustable tilt fence: the face plate tilts 0 to 90 degrees, so you can join work at whatever angle the job requires (22-1/2 degrees, say, if you're working in octagons). Cabinetmakers will appreciate the convenience of being able to make flush cuts at 0 degrees without having to remove the fence. The 6-1/2 amp motor spins the tool's carbide blade at 10,000 rpm, making remarkably quick, clean cuts. We found the gauges easy to read and easy to set, a big plus (there's nothing worse than wrestling with or squinting at a tool every time you make adjustments). DeWalt's joiner also has preset stops for all common biscuit sizes and there's a handy vacuum adapter that allows you to hook up suction to keep dust in the shop to a minimum--always a good idea. --Jon Groebner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars best choice for moderate use
I won't bore you with repeating the specs or features of the biscuit joiner as the other reviews cover them quite well. I've had this tool for about 6 months now and am delighted with it. I had the porter cable model which is quite a bit more expensive. I found it to be bulkier to use than the DeWalt and a lot more likely to slip away from your alignment marks than the DeWalt. This cutter has pins on both sides of the blade that go a long way to help keeping the cutter in line with the wood.. The only drawback is that the dust chute will clog with the dust bag installed when cutting into long grained softwoods.
Having owned both the porter cable and the Dewalt I must give a big nod to the DeWALT. Smaller and easier to use and a few $$ less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprise, suprise
Just received my DW682K.Opened the main shipping box and I was plesantly suprised to find a box of 1000 Porter Cable assorted biscuits. Then I opened the actual Joiner case, and found a set of four Dewalt wood chisels inside in it's own handy carrying case. There was no mention of either of these in the product writeup.Haven't plugged it in yet, but for $149.00, free shipping, and my added "bonuses", how can I go wrong? Not sure if everyone has or is going to get the extras, but I'm one happy camper right now.

3-0 out of 5 stars Delta's Instructions Really Stink
After years of using a Delta Contractors Saw, I always wanted to upgrade to a Unisaw with a Biesemeyer fence.I figured this high-end saw would come with good instructions. This is not the case - the manual is awful. The text descriptions are totally lacking in detail, the pictures are so poorly exposed you can't even tell what you are looking at, and the lack of a actual-size drawings of the nuts, bolts and washers makes it hard to find the right parts. My son and I spent the better part of day assembling this saw. With good instructions it could have been done in 2 hours.

Unisaw problem #1:
The threaded holes on the table saw are loaded with metal shavings and need to be cleaned out before tightening the bolts.I used a combination of WD-40 and grease, while threading in the bolts, which allows some of the junk to come out.The manual says nothing about this.

Unisaw problem #2:
The manual doesn't tell you which edge of the wings to attach and doesn't tell you that the wings are interchangable. We stupidly chose to attach the edge that had threaded holes to the saw - BIG MISTAKE.We couldn't get the wings to snug up.We interchanged them and filed the edges - neither of which helped. Finally we clamped them to the saw with pipe clamps - which helped some. After convincing ourselves that we'd never get the wings properly align (and that we should have purchased a Jet) the next step exposed our mistake.Mounting the switch involved using a hold in the left wing that didn't exist.IF ONLY THE MANUAL HAD STATED WHICH EDGE OF THE WINGS TO ATTACH.The mounting of the wings goes fairly smoothly when using the correct (non-threaded) edges. We were a able to snug the wings up nicely, although both wings are slightly warped, so that a perfectly flat surface was not achieved.

Unisaw problem #3:
In order to mount the switch properly, one of the bolts on the left wing has to be removed. The instructions should tell you about this before you attach the wing so you could do both at once.Fortunately by this time I was getting pretty good at attaching the wings.

Biesemeyer problem #1:
The rest of the Unisaw assembly went smoothly. Now on to the Biesemeyer fence.Since this company was at one time independent of Delta, I figured their instructions would be better - WRONG.They actually have followed Delta's format with non-descript text and poorly exposed photos. The first problem was mounting the front rail. There are a million holes and they leave it up to you to figure out which ones to use.I finally figured out that the vertical slot in the rail should align with the blade and you want to use the 2 threaded holes on the unisaw base (not the wings).Believe it or not the manual doesn't share these 2 critical details with you.

Biesemeyer problem #2:
After getting all the equipment attached, we put the fence in place to find that it wouldn't lock. This problem actually is covered in the manual, although not until the next step.A guide piece can get lodged in a wrong position - just flip it up and you're all set.

Biesemeyer problem #3:
They tell you to align the fence to the mitre slot of the saw.We did and it wasn't even close to being square. This step does not mention there is an adjustment for this (again it was in the next step and it should have been referenced in the current step). We actually took off a Unisaw wing (again), thinking that its slight protrusion from the base was causing the fence rail to be out of square - thus effecting the squareness of the fence. This did not help. But there are two set screws on the fence that align the fence - if only they had reference this fact in the current step.

Hours of wasted time and frustation could have been saved by Delta producing good manuals. If anyone at Delta is listening, take a look at Grizzly's manuals (available on their website).I actually cancelled my order for a Delta dust collector and bought the more expensive Grizzly because of the better manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a good saw
I found this saw easy to assemble. The extension plates ran out about .020" from main table, but I feel that is a petty issue. The Biesemeyer fence is easy to read and accurate. I especially appreciate the on/off switch. It's location and ease of use is quite helpful. The adjustment hardware is tight. When I bought this saw the website said that this motor required a 40 amp slowburn fuse, which I installed. Upon getting the saw I found that it is a 20 amp motor. I found this frustrating, but I guess I can't fault the saw for that. The motor is quite strong. I can't think of why you would need more than than this delivers.I also don't have a dust collection system, and found it best just to leave the side cover off - just because it fills up so fast with dust. The blades that come with the saw are good quality.
In short, the negatives are petty, the strengths are great, and I'm happy with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the jungles of the Amazon.com
I ordered this table saw on March 17,2004 and up until now I could not use it. ABF freight systems lostthe guide for the Bisemeyer fence. On March 29, I received 3 pallets out of 4 and ABF said they will complete the order by that Friday. The following week (Wednesday), I called ABF and they told me the piece was missing. Tried to contact Amazon.com, account was suspended for reasons they can't explain later. For one whole week I couldn't get in touch with them. Can't send them e-mails. I got so frustrated, I typed the words "amazon.com" complaints on yahoo.com. My3cents.com came up and I got the Amazon.com customer service number. In the meantime, ABF is still looking for the missing piece. Customer service is no help at all. They should call it Customer Diservice". Everytime you call them you have to tell them your story and they will relay your problem to the tool departrment that would answer you if they want to. And if they ever answer theywill give you a wrong information. Last week I told them that I want to return the table saw. Their attitude is OK no problem. They don't have any idea that the table saw weighs 450lbs. and I have to hire somebody to unload it from the ABF truck. The following morning, I sent them an e-mail telling them that instead of me sending them back the table saw why don't they just send the fence. Then they answered me back. Theysaid the original missing piece was found and is on the way. This time, they contacted me by phone. I called ABF just to make sure if it's true and they said nothing is on the way to me.I tried to contact by e-mail (3 times for 2 days), no answer. I called the "customer diservice" and told them the story over again. After 30 minutes the same customer disservice person who informed me that the fence was on the way 2 days ago told me again that it's on the way and it's in Kansas. I called the ABF discrict manager again and he told me again that "nothing's on the way to you". I ordered the table saw on March 17 and today is April 20, I still couldn't use my table saw. I guess my order is lost in the jungles of the Amazon.com. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makita Cordless Impact Driver Kit BTD200SH
This tool is a handyman's dream.I'm not sure whether this $549 price is for the impact wrench or the impact driver. The picture on this page is for the impact wrench, but the part number is for the impact driver (BTD200SH).The wrench version should have model number BTW200SH.I'd call up Amazon to confirm before ordering.I know for a fact Amazon is selling BTD200SH for $399.Do a search for BTD200SH on Amazon and you will see two entries:one 399, the other for 549.The price for the impact driver has tumbled everywhere else but Amazon, because Makita is reportedly phasing out this tool for reasons I don't know (hefty price?, hefty weight?, hefty size?).The price for the impact wrench version BTW200SH has not changed. An impact driver has a quick change 1/4" hex chuck, whereas an impact wrench has a square socket drive head. Only the impact driver has been discontinued. The identically built impact wrench version is still being manufactured and not discounted.

First a caveat: I am only a homeowner and not a contractor. I use my tools to fix my own home and a couple of my mother's rental properties. My views are from a novice user's/handyman's vantage point.

I bought this tool after a contractor, whom I hired for a major repair job, touted to me the benefits of impact drivers when used to drive long wood screws. The benefits are: no hand strain, dramatically reduced chances of stripping the screw heads, being able to drive screws that your regular drill/driver would not have a prayer's chance of driving in the first place.

How does an impact driver do all that? An impact driver works by combining rotational action (as on a regular drill) with a strong hammering action in the rotational direction. The hammering action doesn't kick in until the rotational resistance reaches a certain point. Here is an analogy to help you understand the impact action: if you've ever changed tires with a factory original one sided nut wrench, you'd pull the lever as hard as possible in order to loosen a nut. Sometimes the nut may be so tight that it may be stuck and the wrench won't move. What do you do? You reposition the lever of the wrench and you step hard on the lever a couple of times until the nut is suddenly loose. The stepping action is almost identical to the impact torque action of the impact driver.

The Makita BTD200SH has 1774 in-lbs. of maximum torque (or equivalently 149 ft-lbs, or 200 Newton-meters for the metrically minded). For comparison, most top-notice 18V drill drivers fall in the 475 to 550 in-lbs. maximum torque range. And most other impact drivers on the market range from only 800 in-lbs. to perhaps 1200 in-lbs. This easily makes the Makita BTD200SH the most powerful cordless impact driver by a huge margin, although Milwaukee has an 18V cordless impact wrench with an even higher torque rating (240 ft-lbs), but the Milwaukee is an impact wrench and not an impact driver. Unfortunately for the Makita BTD200SH, along with the most torque in the class title, it claims the most weight in the class title as well. It weighs a comparatively very heavy 6.3 lbs., even though most 18V and 24V drill/drivers easily weigh this much. Most impact drivers, on the other hand, weigh only 4 lbs. or less. Maybe a combination of high price, heavy weight, etc. led to poor sales, which then forced Makita to discontinue the product. The true weight aside, it doesn't feel that heavy in the hand because the T-handle is very well balance.

To use an impact driver, lay the tip of a bit firmly and perpendicularly on a screw head and press the trigger slowly at first. Because impact drivers have a very high rotational speed, it's best to start slow to prevent the tip from jumping out and stripping the screw head. Once the screw starts rotating, you can then increase the RPM. The amazing thing with impact drivers is you don't feel the reaction force. Although the impact driver is torquing the screws at 1774 in-lbs., you don't feel any opposing torque at all. It's simply amazing. Try using a drill/driver even at 500 in-lbs. and your wrist may twist off, but not so with an impact driver. The only thing you'll feel is the very loud noise of the impacting action. It will get loud enough when driving large screws that you will need ear plugs. Besides driving screws, it can also act as a drill, although it can only accept quick change drill bits with a 1/4" hex shank. I've not tried the drilling mode myself but numerous reviews from other users of impact drivers show that it can handily drill up to 3/4" diameter in wood. Larger holes may cause the tool to vibrate excessively because of the impacting action. I have a feeling this impact driver will retire my cordless drill/driver or at least relegate it to true heavy duty drilling tasks only.

Tool specs:

bare weight with one 1.7 AH battery - 6.3 lbs.
maximum torque: 1774 in-lbs.
No load speed: Low 0 - 1,600 RPM; High 0 - 2,000 RPM
Impacts per minute: Low 0 - 2,500 IPM; High 0 - 3,000 IPM

The tool comes with a hard molded case, a 1-hr. quick charger, a 1.7 AH battery. I've read someone else's review on Amazon that the 1.7 AH battery holds enough charge to drive 1000 to 1200 1/2x12 lags before needing a charge(incredible), so maybe having only 1 battery is not too much of a drawback. I've not used mine often enough to verify the battery charge life. Still I bought a second kit, mostly just to get a second battery, which costs $130 retail anyway, and also to buy a second driver, charger, and hard case almost for a song before all the current closeout stocks are gone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wails on lag bolts, screws, and the like.
Don't be confused; this is not an impact wrench but an impact driver (different chuck) designed for screws and lag bolts of all types. That being said, the Makita driver is a dream. I use it for installing big 1/2" lag bolts (use a 1/4"- 1/2" socket adapter) into thick pressure treated pilings.I previously used a hammer drill, now those days of jerked wrists and rounded bolt heads are over. This one is smooth. It can easily drive a 40 Torx screw through a railroad tie, almost effortlessly. No more stripped sockets.I can drive any ware from 1000-1200, 1/2 x 12 lags before it needs a charge. It does get a little hot from extended continuous use, but this is only a minor inconvenience. If you need the power to drive and work all day, this is the tool. This tool has been dropped, left in the rain, and worked harder then any tool should be, but it comes back for more every time. The Makita driver seems almost bullet proof. The charger that comes with it is easy to understand. We have the adapter to jam Makita's 12 - 24-volt batteries. It works good on all of them. Way to go Makita! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Great for light framing--remodeling, especially--this Impulse cordless framing nailer from Paslode lets you avoid the hassle of compressor hoses and compressor noise. The nailer's small, 12-inch-long, lightweight body (6.9 pounds) is easy to hold and, because you're not dragging a hose, doesn't cause as much arm fatigue as other nailers. The nailer drives 2- to 3-1/4-inch nails and has easy-to-adjust drive depth and a high-visibility load magazine. This Paslode nailer uses a patented system that requires both a fuel cell and an included rechargeable battery. Overall, we were impressed with the nailer's performance--it's consistent and there's adequate power for most uses. This model shoots up to 1,200 nails on a single fuel cell and up to 4,000 nails on a full battery charge. There's a convenient belt hanger so you don't have to lay the nailer on the ground or on top of a ladder or wedge it among rafters, and the high-visibility orange makes it difficult to misplace. The kit includes a plastic carrying case, a lightweight charger, and safety goggles. Please note that the nailer does not come with the fuel cell included. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Faming Nailer
I bought this nail gun to finish a few rooms in my basement. The Paslode Framing Nailer worked flawlessly. It nailed pressure treated 2x4s perfectly.I didn't have a single problem with it.

The only thing I didn't like was the exhaust that the gun produces.Since it works off of an actual explosion, it gives off an exhasut that can be a little overwhelming if your not working outside or have the windows open.

5-0 out of 5 stars CUT YOUR UMBILICAL AIRHOSE PEOPLE!
Will someone please tell me what "light framing" is? The nature of the work itselfdoes not change whether one wants to use a 16 oz. hammer to put together a house or a framing gun.So I'm not quite sure what those reviewers mean when they say this gun is for "light framing". It shoots nails into wood! Does it's being cordless somehow translate into some kind of limitation? As long as this nailer is working like it ought to, I don't see any reason why one would hesitate to use it in any situation one night find onself in when framing a house. For reviewers to categorize this liberating tool as a novelty is misleading to those who might benefit from it's use. Cordless is the future, get used to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "wireless" is better
I once had an ex army ranger turned framer tell me that he would rather jump out of a airplane with an air hose than a parachute, because the hose will surely get hung on something , somewhere on the way down.while this is a little far fetched, using the impulse gun eliminates the "hung up air hose".it is great for light framing and punch list work. i strongly recommend this gun for people in the remodel/repair industry as well as the do-it-yourselfer. ... This tool makes humans as close to foolproof as we can get, at least when it comes to measuring, cutting and installing trim without a flaw. We love that it’s a solid piece, with nothing adjustable on it, so you know its 45- and 90-degree angles are always true. It takes the gymnastics out of measuring, too, whether screwed to your workbench or temporarily tacked to the working wall with 6d finish nails, because of the built-in tape measure hooks. Even tricky inside-to-inside miters are a snap. Perfect 3/16-inch reveals on windows and door jambs are guaranteed every time: Just line it up and draw your guide with the pencil holes. Though it’s marketed for casements, we’d keep it in the toolbox for all kinds of jobs. Imagine installing baseboard up to door trim and lining up the Trim Loc for a perfect cutline every time. We think it’d be the perfect gauge for squaring saw blades, too. This little tool will save you time, money and lots of frustration.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great but a lot of money for plastic
Unlike many of the reviewers who bash this tool, I have actually used it and have made "perfect miters" with it.I am a professional woodworker and I do use it.It is handy for marking a reveal around door jambs and for making a perfect 45 degree reference line in the corners. The only problem I have with it is I was expecting it to be be metal and it was plastic.I have seen them in metal in stores and other reviewers referred to them as metal. The plastic works fine.It is just a lot of money for plastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very handy tool for hanging trim
Not being a professional trim carpenter, this tool really helped me do a good job trimming doors and windows. I read the negative reviews calling the tool useless--and it may very well be to an old pro. If you make your living trimming out houses, you're probably beyond this. I agree with the complaint about the lack of instructions. It took me a little while to figure out how to use it. Just examine the pictures and practice with some scrap, and you'll soon be rolling right along.

2-0 out of 5 stars Agree with pointless
This is a gadget. How much it will help you probably depends on your skill level. I do not know of a single pro-trimmer that uses this thing. Most pro-trimmers do not even use a tape measure for installing casings anyway, so this "toy" only adds a step. I highly doubt it will give you "perfect miters every time" so do not expect it will.Perfect miters are elusive to the best of us at times and it takes experience, skill, an accurate saw and a good blade, and a few installation tricks to to get the "perfect miter" that won't open up. Given that this tool ranks #4 in sales must mean something, but I would not expect it to deliver on all it claims it can do for your casing work. Bench Dog is makes some excellent products but I am not so sure of this one. ... Read more

It's hard to imagine something really new in the reciprocating saw world, but lo and behold, here it is. The Tiger Claw works just like a standard reciprocating saw, with some major advances. The gear housings, front and back, can be rotated in any direction. Yes, you heard right. No more twisting and contorting--you stay upright and the tool does the Houdini act. The rear gear housing adjusts 180 degrees in either direction with 13 positive stop locations, and the front gear house rotates a full 360 degrees in either direction with 12 positive stops. At the risk of sounding like a late-night TV commercial... but wait, there's more! We've seen blade-change systems aplenty over the years, all of which promise speed and ease. But there is nothing on the market on any tool we've ever touched that begins to rival this Quick-Change system. We changed blades in under two seconds. Really. Everything about this saw makes sense, both for the professional as well as the do-it-yourself homeowner. Well done, Porter-Cable. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm spoiled!
This saw quickly spoils you with its versatility.

Fresh out of the box, I needed it to cut a 3/8" diameter steel spike. I mounted the right saw blade and set to work. The work was near the ground, so I sat, held the saw firmly, and started cutting. But then I realized that my trigger hand was in an awkward position. I thought, "Hey, I've got this variable angle saw. What am I doing flexing my wrist this way?" So I made the necessary adjustment, and finished the cut in no time.

Not only can this saw help you reach difficult places, but it even makes ordinary jobs totally painless. I'm completely spoiled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and capable
I got my new Tiger Claw for Christmas and immediately took it out in my shop and chopped up some 2"X 12" white oak joists from an old building deconstruction project. The saw has more than enough power to take the cut as fast as I could force the blade into the beam.It seems to be built for extreme action and is "hell for stout" as my dad used to say.The angled gear boxes are fairly easy to adjust once you get the hang of the rather smallish recessed release buttons. What I have noticed in the few times I have used it is that it does vibrate more than the Milwaukee 11 amp sawzall, so a pair of light leather gloves help dampen it when cutting. It is also heavier, i am assuming because of all the extra gearing.I wouldn't want to spend hours at a time working with it over my head.I am going to mainly use it to trim up and dimension said white oak planks for use in furniture projects.I have lots of nails in this old lumber that are too deeply imbedded to remove, so cutting on my table saw or with a circular saw are too dangerous and damaging to the blades until I get the metal contaminated sections cut out.Perfect job for a heavy sawzall. With being able to turn the blade 90 degrees to the body, I can pull it through the lumber like a big jig saw, thus reducing the effort and fatigue a regular sawzall would cause.Other than the higher level of vibration than the Milwaukee, the only other detraction I could come up with is that the adjustable shoe has too little adjustment.I would like to see at least two more notches added to the three it currently has. This would give more options for cutting thin materials and varying where the blade wears in use.Bottom line:After all the shopping and comparing I did, and finally getting my hands on it, I would definitely recommend this saw to anyone needing a really heavy duty and flexible sawzall.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST TOOLS ON THE JOBSITE
I am building my first home. I bought this saw because my yellow and black brand 24volt saw does not last long on a charge. The tiger claw has preformed with out a flaw. The features are unbelivable. Do not pass this one by. ... Read more

I had an earlier version (probably 3 yr old). For no reason I could figure, it stopped working properly. I handled it very carefully. My advice is for you is to ask Porter-Cable if they have improved it in any signifigant way. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the barrel-grip version of Bosch's bestselling top-handle 1587 model. Many woodworkers prefer the barrel grip on this model, however, arguing that it's easier to cut scrolls and curves when the saw is pushed forward (as opposed to down). Aside from the difference in grip, this saw is much like its top-handle counterpart: the balance is superb, the 5 amp motor packs plenty of power, the foot plate tilts left and right (up to 45 degrees), and the base retracts for flush cutting. The tool-free blade-changing system also works well. Simply put, this a compact, powerful, well-designed saw--a perfect buy for users who prefer barrel grips. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful tool
Whether ripping straight lines through plywood or making intricate scroll cuts, this jigsaw performs flawlessly. The quality is apparent just by holding it your hand- it's one of those tools that will probably outlive it's owner...Knocking it because of the country of origin is a philosophical/political argument and says nothing about the actual quality of the tool.Bosch's industry best 3 year warranty and the positive comments from people who have actually used it speaks volumes though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Made in China, should be $10
Where is the savings?Pay a premium for an item made in China at a huge discount. That sounds like a good deal (no jobs left and no savings - sign me up for that program).I will return this "discounted" item asap; or better yet, use it as a hammer.

My quest begins for tools made in this country - such as Milwaukee orbital sawzall: good price, excellent tool, would have paid much more.I do not care if a tool(made here) costs three times as much as one made in China and I have to spend three weeks locating it!Tell that to your economics professor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made in China -- so what?
I first bought a DeWalt, and it was horrible -- tons of blade deflection, slow cutting, etc. Someone recommended the Bosch, and it was like night and day. This is the Cadillac of jigsaws! I've owned the top handle version for six years now, and I'm about to add the barrel grip to my collection.

To the reviewer who was shocked to discover that this "supposedly quality tool" was made in China (which has long been known as the PRC): did you really give this excellent tool one star simply due to its origin? My goodness, I'm going to love explaining this to my friends here in China... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Capable saw - just no wow!
I bought this saw through Amazon and was very pleased with the buying experience
- Saw was shipped via ABF and could be tracked via a tracking number
- Arrived on the anticipated date, everything in excellent condition
- The driver even dropped the boxes in the garage for my wife
- Promotional discount and free shipping brought this saw close to the next tier lower Delta saws

I've been a weekend saw dust creator for about 10 years. This saw replaced a Ryobi BT3000 that has served well for what it is, but it was time to trade up.

In my research on saws I came to the following conclusion:what distinguishes top end contractor saws is primarily the fence system and second the trueness of the table.I bought this saw because I wanted a Biesemeyer fence and a saw that was made in the USA (the motor is made in Mexico).

And that is exactly what I got.The saw is very heavy. It was dead-on true right out of the box.I installed the splitter and blade guard, both have worked flawlessly in a variety of crosscut and ripping tasks.I've always worked without either, but after a coworker lost a finger a few months back, I wanted a saw that came equipped with a serviceable safety system.

But realize this saw is essentially the 36-444 with upgraded knobs and wheels. The instruction manual is for the 36-441.

I am less than pleased with the quality of the Bies fence. The quality of build of the extension table was poor and I'm concerned it is spreading the side rails. The assembly instructions call for a z-bracket that was not shipped with the table extension. After a call to Delta, they informed me this step is no longer required and the hardware not included. Why not include a slip of paper with the assembly instructions notifying of this change? This cost me a weekend of time.Second, one of the screw holes that attach the fence guide did not line up with the corresponding hole in the front rail. Finally, the fence is very stiff and hard to move from side to side (see the comment above about the extension table).I have had no luck with Biesemeyer service to solve this problem.

I suppose I got what I paid for - the saw cuts cleanly, accurately, is safe and stable. It just doesn't have any Wow! factor to justify the X5 marketing and price.Too many little hassles and imperfections to make this a really great saw commensurate with its marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great table saw if you don't have room for a cabinet saw
I assembled this saw by myself - even mounting the cast iron extension wing - and had no problems.Takes some time to put it together but you really get to know how a table saw works.I found that the saw table was flat front to back, side to side and diagonally (within 0.005" - the thinnest feeler guage I have) measured with a feeler guage set and 24" precision straight edge. Both the cast iron extension wing and the extension table were easy to align and planarize with the main table.Once again flat within the limit of my measurement.I suspect the surface was nearly perfectly flat as I could see no light under the edge of the straight edge. The blade was parallel with the miter slot out of the box.The Biesemeyer fence was parallel with the miter slot out of the box.The only adjustment I had to make was setting the 45 and 90 degree stops which was quite easy. The extension table requires that you drill holes in the wooden support and it does take some time to get the saw table and extension table planar and flat which needs to be done before you drill holes in the support.Fit and finish were excellent - no marred paint or other blemishes on any component.Rewired the motor for 230V using the wiring diagram provided on the motor plate.Cuts like a hot knife in butter using the provided blade.Excellent saw for the serious hobbyist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love the B-meyer fence...but what about all the dust
I have owned this saw for about 1 1/2 years and I have found it i
