5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
This is a solid, heavy-duty impact wrench using 1/2 inch sockets. It comes without a case or sockets. It is powerful, easily driving 5/8" lags (5 inches) into old, very hard wood (with a pilot hole).I had a small job to do but it was worth the money for this wrench.

Editorial Review

Here's a great collection of DeWalt tools at a really amazing price and they all use the same 18-volt batteries. The 1/2-inch adjustable clutch drill/driver/hammer drill's high-torque motor delivers 450 inch/pounds of torque for drilling with large bits and driving large-shank screws with no worries of lock-up because the third speed is 38 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 2,000 rpm. The chuck's carbide jaws won't let go of even the smallest bit. The DW938 reciprocating saw has nice ergonomics--good balance, a comfortable grip, and it's not unwieldy, even with the battery attached. We particularly like the keyless blade clamp that lets you change blades without touching the blade or reciprocating shaft. The 6-1/2-inch circular saw is one of favorites for its light weight, power and ease. You can see the blade on the left side, so you've got great cutting-line visibility. Want to bevel? No problem. And it's even got a rip fence. The impact driver is only 6-1/2 inches long, but it delivers 1,600 in-lbs of max torque; its heavy-duty impacting mechanism directs torque to the fastener without kickback. Its fits into places other impact drivers can't and is what you need for automotive work, farm machinery or anywhere else you need super torque. The flex-neck flashlight's wide-angle beam is brighter than a traditional flashlight, and you'll find all kinds of uses for it. A nice touch we appreciate is the spare Xenon bulb, so you'll never be in the dark. All together, quite a neat deal.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

If you're looking to add a solid, reliable cordless impact wrench to your tool crib, the heavy-duty, 3/8-inch, DeWalt DW051K-2 12-volt cordless impact wrench might be worth considering. This mid-level impact wrench has everything you'll need to loosen and tighten tough bolts and drive fasteners through metal, concrete and wood surfaces. Plus, it's small enough (6-1/2 inches long and 3.5 pounds) to get into places larger units with comparable features simply cannot reach. But don't let its size fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a workhorse. The wrench churns out a whopping 1,200 in./lbs. of maximum torque with speeds ranging from 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 3/8-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

  • Includes impact wrench, two 12-volt XR batteries, charger and kit box
  • 1,200 in./lbs. of maximum torque for a wide range of fastening applications
  • Compact size and weight allows access into tighter areas
  • 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm for faster application speed
  • 3/8-inch square drive with hog ring retention

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll save the fifth star for later...
Having used many different brands of cordless drill/drivers over the past 15 years, I was curious about this new wave of impact drivers.I had the chance to use this DeWalt driver (a friend's) and I can report that I was extremely impressed with it.In all fairness, this isn't a comparison since I have never used any of the competitor's impact drivers, but the DeWalt was more than I thought it would be.

Power - there's all you would ever want here.I was driving 3" screws into treated lumber and quickly noticed two things. The driver didn't hesitate while driving the screws home and compared to my standard drill/driver I had to apply much less pressure on the rear of the gun to keep the bit from slipping on the screw head.

Size/Weight - You don't notice how much a good drill/driver weighs until you use something like this that is more powerful and yet weighs less.Though the size is tiny compared to what I am used to, it doesn't feel unnaturally so.

Value - though this is probably the best tool I have ever used to drive a screw, it is expensive so the vaulue per dollar isn't what it could be.If I were starting from scratch on a collection of tools, I would think seriously about this one.As it is, I already have two DeWalt drill/drivers and will probably not justify replacing them at this cost.

Overall, this is a great tool that I feel justifies the impact driver craze that is currently going on.If you build decks for a living, run to buy one of these. If you are a weekend warrior, get more bang for your buck by getting a good deal on a 12-14.4 volt drill/driver instead...

5-0 out of 5 stars great product!!!
This is a great buy and trust me you wont find a better price.I love this tool, it saves me a lot of time at work and is actually really lite.I know that almost every technician i work with at my dealership uses this tool and they all love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool
I am a professional mechanic and have used many cordless impact drivers. This is the best I have run across. I wish it was 14.4 volt so it would use the same batteries as drill but that is my only complaint. Plenty of power will break non impact sockets and small bolts beware. Lightweight and powerful. I will buy 18volt 1/2" impact in future when funds allow.
My recomendation BUY IT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miter Saw Vertical Clamp
Clamp works very well, and the push button release is super nice. You won't notice any wobble if you get it tight.I did notice that with my DW706 it impedes cutting a 45 degree cut on the same side as the clamp (arm won't come all the way down).the solution is to change the miter to the other side of the clamp. That's my only "con".Therefore two clamps wouldn't work if you were cutting 45's.But it's a solid clamp and well built.Works well to hold down even 2x6x10's while you're cutting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice-but pricey!
I ended up getting a pair and they are very good quality! The push button quick adjust works great and I really use these clamps alot. I highly recommend them!No regrets!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice clamp, but a bit pricey
Very sturdy.Well engineered. The push button releases the clamp and it can be quickly adjusted.Releasing the button engages the clamp shaft, and you give it a twist to apply clamping pressure.Done.The clamp head has a rubber cover, so it not only prevents maring your work, but provides additional grip.Get two of these so you can clamp on both sides of the blade. They can be easily moved out of the way (swing it behind the fence, still attached to the saw) when not needed, or just as easily removed completely.I leave mine attached to the DW708.

This accessory is up to the level of quality I expect from DeWalt.Highly recommended.

For the price these should come in pairs, but keeping my fingers where they are is important so I spent the money to get them. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Here’s huge cutting capacity in a surprising size. This 8-1/2 inch single-bevel miter saw really does cut a 3-inch post in a single pass, just like DeWalt says. And it’s also the only saw its size we’ve seen that will trim 3-1/2-inch crown molding vertically, because of DeWalt’s taller fence. With its smooth slide action, you’ll choose this over your table saw when it comes to cross cutting—-even a 12-inch board. It’s got all the features of the bigger, high-end saws, and then some. Five preset bevel stops zero your blade in at 0, 33.9, 45, 48, and -2 degrees, and there are 11 dead-on accurate miter stops at the most common spots: 0, 15, 22-1/2, 31.6, 45, 50 (left), and 60 (right) degrees. What we like best about this saw is the awesome ergonomic details. Anyone who’s used comparable saws repeatedly will tell you that the vertical handle causes some fatigue, especially on saws with a safety button. But this saw’s got a horizontal handle, keeping your hand and arm in a more natural position, cut after cut. Most saws’ miter adjustment involve turning a knob a few revolutions to lock and then to unlock the miter setting, but this DeWalt has a really nice cam lever lock that eliminates all that twisting and is just as reliable. This saw does throw a lot of dust, but we’ve not seen a saw that doesn’t (even those with dustbags still make a mess). We’d recommend building a little jig to hold your extraction system hose close by. This is a fabulous saw for the contractor. It weighs only 43 pounds and is easy to tote because of the handle. But it’s also the perfect choice for the woodworker. An aside: DeWalt makes a great miter saw stand that fits this saw like a dream.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Saw!!Use it thoughtfully
I've had the saw for about a week and am very pleased.I bought the DW723 stand too and that's also great.A few reviews have knocked the product, but I suspect that's due to misuse or lack of thinking or experimentation. For example, the amount of dust thrown and collected is one issue.I use the saw with a shop vac on the dust outlet.Used straight down on the workpiece like a chopsaw it throws quite a bit of dust. But if you start the cut with the saw close to you and cut full depth towards the back, it throws almost no dust that the vac doesn't pick up.(I DO wish DeWalt had seen fit to design it for a 2.5 inch vac hose rather than 1.25 to increase the air flow and dust capture.)

Also I've seen gripes about the material supports, but I don't understand why.The saw can be positioned anywhere along the rail of the stand, so if the saw is set at one end, support is available on the rail infinitely out to 4 feet and then the adjustable support adds another 3.5 feet.I suppose cutting a miter on the end of a 20 foot long board would demand additional support -- but DeWalt must have found that's a rarity and didn't want to add the extra weight -- understandable.

Finally, availability of the 8.5 inch blade is NOT an issue.I found 60 tooth carbide tipped blades made by the GREEN Japanese tool company both at Lowes and online at Amazon for less than $30.They make a beautiful cut.Several other makes of the 8.5 blades are available too -- but their prices are generally substantially higher.

Hope this corrects some misleading information in a few reviews.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Let me start off by saying that I have yet to find any miter saw that I would rate at five stars(although I do believe I rated the 12" Dewalt slide at 5 stars) because every manufacturer does put profit above product. However, I do like this saw very much.Slide is smooth, fence height good(when will Makita and Hitachi finally get the fence height right and even on both sides), lever action miter lock is awesome(knobs stink), blade deflection is good(it is only a 8-1/2 blade afterall), overall a really good saw.Dust collection complaints are irrelevant, as anyone expecting a slider miter saw to have good dust control lives in the world of clean radial arm saws too.I have yet to figure out what a "material hold down clamp"(or work clamp) is, but if I ever do, it means that I cut off on of my arms/hands and should not by using this saw anyway(we pros dont have time for clamping down wood prior to cutting it[short pieces should be cut from a long one, afterall]).I would buy another one in an instant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice saw for cabinet/furniture makers
I've had this for about 6 months and it's never let me down. It takes a little getting used to if you've never used a sliding miter saw before, as the technique is somewhere between a radial arm saw and a normal fixed miter saw.As a couple of other reviewers pointed out, you have to make sure you slide the saw all the way home or you'll leave a little bit uncut.

One thing I've found is when I'm cutting narrow planks (4" or 6") I've gotten into the habit of pulling the blade toward me past the front edge of the piece, dropping it down, and then sliding it back through the piece - instead of just plunging the blade straight in, as you'd do with a fixed chop saw. This seems to significantly reduce bottom tearout.

It's undeniably a very pleasant tool to use; if you've only used saws that have a vertical handle you won't believe the difference the horizontal handle makes. The switch is well designed, it's not easy to trigger by accident but not fatiguing to hold. The action of the slides is smooth as silk, and setting the miter angles is quick, easy, and very positive. The motor has plenty of power for any kind of wood I've ever sent its way.

The 8 1/2 inch size has some advantages - the blade seems to be more stable, even without a stabilizer, than most 10" blades. Also in my experience 8 1/2" blades are a little cheaper than the equivalent 10" blade. But, it won't cut a 4x4 (or a 2x4 on edge) in one pass - a 10 incher will.Whether or not that matters depends on the kind of work you do.

You'll want to replace the blade that the saw comes with, it's fine for chopping up 2x4s (but if that's all you want to do you don't need this saw) but not good enough for finish work. There aren't a million blades available for this size of saw, but there's a decent selection - although not all the catalogs carry them.My favorite is a 60 tooth DeWalt finish blade that you can find most anywhere for about 50 bucks and does great work for me in all types of hardwood.Freud makes one that's pretty good as well.Forrest makes one of their chopmaster blades in this size, I'm sure it's great but it's $100+ and since I'm happy with my current blade I've never tried it.

Overall fit and finish is very nice - as you generally expect from contemporary Italian manufacture. After taking it out of the box, I went over it completely with my machinist square and couldn't find anything out of alignment. The only quality complaint I have is the crummy screws holding the blade guard on - blade changing is not exactly a snap with this saw and they really don't help.

There's no clamp included, unlike some other manufacturers - since I prefer to keep all 10 of my fingers I bought one - but they soak you on this item - $35!!Actually I bought two but you only need one - you hardly ever use both at once and it takes a second or two to swap it from one side of the saw to the other. Also, while it holds well, it's a screw type and I would prefer some type of cam action - I think that would be faster and easier to use.

But overall if you want a really sweet, pleasant to use saw and you don't normally need to cut large timber, I'd recommend this saw - I'm certainly very happy with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Portable
Recovery time was very good when using a framing nailer. Using a blowgun for cleaning was ok. Acceptable noise level.Used on a 100' extention cord off a 15 amp circuit, with no problems. I'm very pleased with it. Looking forward to many years of use in my shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just plain pleased
I use this with my Paslode; 16 Gauge and Framing nailers, I hang then trim doors, sometimes rebuild sills and headers. I also do various trim/frame carpentry on other projects.

If you are worried about changing the oil its only once a year!
If you are worried about operating on a slope, i have always found a flat spot to locate it in, even roofers leave theirs on the ground, just put on more hose. Who wants to carry this up a ladder anyway?!

I would never buy an air compressor without a user serviceable airfilter!
I would never buy one of those oil less types

5-0 out of 5 stars Best compact hands down.
This bad boy will do the work of a much larger compressor. It will easily run several guns on a framing crew or even a roofing crew. The HP rating is a little misleading compared to other compressors. 2 HP isn't max , it's continuous. I have one of these (Emglo 2HP) that's been abused and used hard for several years now with no problems ,only good dependable air. I highly recommend it. If I could change one thing I would make it quieter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No need for cords, unless you want them....
I have the entire 24V kit, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the AC/DC converter feature, so that when the uncommon dead battery situation happens, you're not left without power. DeWalt: How about a 24V jig saw, plate jointer, miter saw and handheld planer? I'll buy them whenever they come out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a burning torch
I cut a 3.5" solid hardened steel blower shaft in half with this saw with one blade, faster than if I hauled a oxy/act rig up to the roof, or ran around trying to tap off power somewhere for a corded saw. This saw never stalled once and still had plenty of power left in it. This is one heck of a time and energy saver for me. Believe it from me, I'm a Commercial Air Conditioning Repairman.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I know so-far about this new saw
Having just bought the older 24v Dewalt recip saw, I was curious to see whether I should return and upgrade for the new model.I haven't tried this new saw yet, but here's what I know.

Firstly, Dewalt assured me that the saw itself has changed very little from the old model. That being said, this saw is a winner! This thing has a durable look & feel, torque, stroke, etc. that put the 18 v line to shame. It cuts fast and accurately.Though heavier than most cordelss models, it is very well balanced when it matters most... cutting.

The batteries and charger are the main updates.
1. The new kit comes with two batts... the old kit had one.
2. The new batteries are ~2.4 amp hrs, vs. 1.7 with the old (longer run-time).
3. The fans supposedly extend the life-cycle of the saw.

This being said, if I was just shopping for a Dewalt recip, I would buy the new kit. This is especially true if I didn't have additional 24v Dewalt tools or additional batteries. Two batteries are definately better than one. If, however, you already have some 24v tools... the reconditioned kit might be a good value. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For one of the lightest models on the market, the DeWalt full round head framing nailer sure packs some power. At just 7.6 pounds (thanks to its magnesium housing and magazine), the 51845 still delivers up to 900 inch/pounds of driving power. Its conservative 12-3/4-inch height lets you toe-nail where space is at a premium. DeWalt’s unique design buries nails even in engineered lumber with minimal recoil, putting less stress on your body. Ergonomics get another boost from the comfortable, curved trigger and shock-absorbing grip. Resetting your depth of drive is blessedly tool-free, fast and easy, and we also like the quick-release jam-clearing feature for its savings of time and frustration. Safety is a priority, with a dry-fire lockout that keeps the tool from firing when the magazine is empty, a trigger lock-off to disable the tool when not in use, and a steel exhaust deflector that protests the tool if it’s dropped. DeWalt even tucked a pair of safety glasses in the box. A reversible rafter hook will let you hang the tool from a rafter or keep it handy on your toolbelt.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this gun....
Day 1...gun misfires and frequently jams.Later in day gun fails to fire at all.Day 2 Return gun purchased on Day 1.New gun fires but jambs frequently.Unjamming of gun annoying and not tool free.

Until Dewalt gets its act together, purchase a tried and true Hitachi which is what i did on Day 3.

2-0 out of 5 stars Comfortable but not durable
Bought this model when it first came out worked pretty good for about 2 years. It was Ergonomic andcomfortable, but the trigger started leaking could not find any one local to repair it, sent it to dewalt repair center cost $135.00 to repair. I think I go back to Hitachi nail gun or maybe try Max nail guns.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
I bought two of these nailers, the first one leaked air out of the trigger the first time I attached an air hose. I returned it and bought another. It worked great for about a week. Then it started to jam every other nail load. It started to leak air. I finally got so mad I threw it off the roof in to a dumpster. Piece of garbage, buy a Senco, or hitachi. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The DeWalt DW621K is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. Itruns quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepower motor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of 8,000 to24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. It has asafety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And the list goeson. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621K as the best is amatter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of a routeris going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage. --CarlThress ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good if bought on clearance - bad if paid full price
Pluses - Has a good motor, spins almost like a dentist drill.Good plunge action.I like its size.Good speed control.Good dust collection.

Minus - Base is poorly designed and I can't use a straight edge with it.The casting of the base is rough and not straight and the base plate edge is not a good reference for the center. My Porter Cable 8529 base plate is better referenced. At least it lands on a 32 inch gradient on my strait edge.I will make a base plate to use in conjunction with a bushing so that I can use a staight edge for dados in plywood.

The bushing center is off by about .025" toward the right (fixed handle). It is at least centered between front and back.

I hate the plunge lock mechenism.I want the handle to act like a handle that I can grab without fear of unlocking the plunge lock and having the router pop up.This would be real bad if using a splining bit or a keyhole bit.

I like the position of the PC 8529 dust collector better. The dewault dust port extension gets in the way when inverting the router to change bushings, bits.

I like the PC 8529 height adjustment better. The Dewault has two height adjusters. The micro adjust knob on the Dewalt is for veneer work or tweeking once you've set the main height adjustment and made a test cut. Also, one turn of the micro adjust doesn't correspond to a convenient gradient like 1/8".The PC height adjustment is one continuous thread and each turn is 1/8".Although cumbersome turning the knob, you can get 59/64" without a test cut.The PC height adjust is however, better suited for the router table

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Plunge Router!
Absolutely a great all purpose plunge router kit!As stated in other reviews this is not the best choice if you are focusing on primary use in a router table because of the on/off switch location. But, everything else is great!I'm very happy with the quality of construction and performance given me by this outer. This unit is definitely one of the best routers in its class. It has all the features one could possibly want. I recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the plunge, the DeWalt 621.
Let me start by saying I don't believe a "perfect tool" exists, but the DeWalt 621 is close.

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago.I insist on good research.I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price.First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart.

Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529.I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price.I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better.I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice.I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free.

When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?"The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner.Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one.I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in.It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan.It was music to my ears.Wheeew was the sound we both made!

I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second.I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load.I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table topand needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface.I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect.Next job.1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature).

The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!).Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines.I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs.

As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers.Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to.The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever.

The Pro's:

**Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments
**Truly functional vacuum system (It really [has power]!)
**Smooth electronic controlled startup/feedback with ample power
**Good spindle lock and collett design
**Good quality of fit/finish

The Con's:

**Unusual base design with smaller surface area
**Unusual power switch (Designed for safety, but so has the P.C. 7529)

Summary:Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool.Or is it just an adult toy?Hmmm.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the buck anywhere
I purchased this drill (actually i think an older version of the same one) used in 2001 and have abused it in every way possible since then. In my job installing car stereo's we go through an average of 2-3 batteries per day and have tried every brand out, but the DeWalt drills have taken far more abuse than any of them.

Mine i have even been running 14.4v batteries in for years and the motor has taken it fine, no smell's, funny sounds or anything else. I have dropped it from 10+ ft with no issues on numerous times. Ive even taken to throwing it on the concrete just to show people how it just will not break. Simply amazes me.

People complain about the battery life as compared to some other drills. This makes no sense to me since ive been a long time fan of Makita, have owned Makita, Black and decker firestorm, porter cable and milwaukee drills and none of them have the battery life of the DeWalt. A fellow installer has been kicking himself because his makita 12v light will run for about 15 mins on a fresh battery while mine will run for 2+hours.

Now in my full time job as a maintenance man at a hospital we have swapped over exclusively to DeWalt drills, replacing porter cable, craftsman and bosch drills.

I am sold on these drills and the abuse that they take and now own 3 of them, one made in 1997, one in 2000, and the other in 2001 and all 3 of them are still alive and kicking, running off of the original batteries no less with no batteries having died yet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill, Bad Battery Performance
I love the balance, torque (and adjustability), low and high speed settings...but the battery life (both the length they hold a charge and the number of charges they take before end of life) pales in comparison to my old (non XR) DeWalt 12 V cordless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but a few problems
Overall I like this drill but there are 2 problems that would make me consider buying another DeWalt drill. First after about 3 years of very minimal use both batteries have died, and of course the price of one battery is close to half the price of the entire drill purchased new. The second problem is the terrible balance of the drill, It can stand up on its own, but add quick change chuck and it cant even stand on its own. So...........In hindsight I wish I had bought th Makita.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this ripoff - Buy an LED flashlight instead
Many of you must have noticed that various manufacturers of power tools are "giving away" flashlights with cordless drills, etc.Well, this is how they make money, by charging $5 for ONE flashlight bulb! What a ripoff. In my experience, these light bulbs are cheaply manufactured and blows out in matter of weeks, not years.

I recommend that you search for "4-LED Flashlight" on Amazon.com and, for a bit more money, buy one of these LED models for which you NEVER have to replace the bulbs.

3-0 out of 5 stars let there be light

1-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt Chip Collection Bag
I purchaesd this so I could remove my Dewalt 735 Planer from my dust collection system and use a seperate trash can with a trash bag. I used a plastic trash can first with the brackets for the handles cut away so the bag would fit tighter to the can. The planer blows the sawdust out with so much force that it kept blowing the bag off the can. I next tried a steel trash can. Same problem. Contrary to all my other Dewalt tools, I'm very disappointed with this chip collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars DW7353 Makes Chip Collecting Easy
Not having space for a dust collection system, the blower on the DW735 helped me decide on the DW735 planer. The planer works really well at evacuating the chips and chip collection is a necessity. I tried using a trash can that I had but some dust came out around the handles; the handles were molded up near the can opening keeping the hood from a tight fit.
I bought a 33 gallon Roughneck wheeled container at Lowe's that had a lip all around the edge and that solved the problem. I put plastic bags in the can and the hood over everything and get no escaped dust and easy emptying.
The instructions say to not let the hose lay over the side of the can. I put a "J" hook in the ceiling and use a rope loop to hold up the hose so it's adjustable and out of the way, simple and effective. This thing works just as it should - I'm very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW7353 Chip Collection Accessory for DW735
Wow!Am I glad I got this with my plainer. It collects almost all the chips and dust from the plainer. The drawstring top for the trashcan makes it very versitile.I have a very, very small shop so the ability to use a smaller trashcan adds to it's value.Using the plainer without it creates a huge mess.If you haven't used a plainer before and are forewarned on the amoung of sawdust you'll still be amazed. If you don't have a central system to hook your plainer up to, I highly recommend getting this.It will be worth every penny.I got is even though another rater talked about the hose inconviently located right above the outfeed table and it can get in the way, but I simply pull the hose up over the top of the machine and it's no problem.Again, if you don't have a central collection system...get this. ... Editorial Review

All right-angle drill drivers are not the same. Sure, they get the same job done--but it’s how easy the tool makes the job that sets the brands apart. This DeWalt model that comes with our highest recommendation. Powered by DeWalt’s system of nice, compact 14.4-volt batteries, the tool boasts a tight, thoughtful design. The best feature, we think, is what DeWalt calls its "multi-grip trigger." The trigger is as long as your little finger, and the lower section of handle is textured for a sturdy grip, allowing you to get the tool up into a tight workspace with an extended reach that the other brands don’t offer. Another advantage, if you have smaller hands: the easy-to-grip battery is slides on and off easily. Two speed ranges, 0 to 400 and 0-1,250 rpm, offer you lots of applications. The drill is tough enough for the pro and feature-friendly enough for the do-it-yourselfer--we can envision this making quick work of a ducting project at home or on the job.Installing drawer guides in a case piece? No problem with this DeWalt. It can even handle larger bits and fasteners with its 210 inch-pounds ofmaximum torque. Two batteries, a one-hour charger, and a hard-plastic carrying case round out a great package. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly useful tool
I love this drill! It was absolutely invaluable for working in the tight angles and narrow spaces I encountered during an extensive kitchen remodel I completed this last summer. I find lots of other uses as an avid woodworker too. Although DeWalt makes an 18-volt version my regular drill/driver has interchangeable power packs for this model. The 14.4-volt batteries last plenty long, have sufficient power for my needs, and recharge quickly. It comes with two batteries so I haven't had any downtime. I found the variable speeds easy to control with the "multi-grip" trigger. The keyless chuck is very convenient and the two clutch settings are essential for switching between drilling/driving applications. Set properly, it always had enough torque for either job. It is very ergonomic with great weight and balance: while it is much easier to control with two hands, it can be used with only one in a pinch (at least for drilling, anyway).

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly right
This drill is a great combination of size & power.I use it for all kinds of stuff.Hogging through studs for electrical, pocket drilling in tight spaces, driving screws, etc.

The more I use it the more I like it.I considered the 9.6v makita but was concerned that it wouldn't have the staying power to drill lots of holes through studs (this was the case for the non standard 9.6v makita). Also I wanted the slow speed this drill provides.

Eventhough this drill was a bit pricy I am glad I choose it.It is serving me quite well.

I only wish it had a clutch for driving screws. This keeps me from giving it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did we not buy this sooner!
We install a lot of kitchens, this pays for its self when putting in a 12" wide or less cabinet, trying to secure the face frames. If you can justify it the budget it is well worth it! 4-0 out of 5 stars Great within its limits.
My wife bought me this for Christmas last year.(You gotta love tools for Christmas.)The grinder is great for everything I have used it for.Cutting steel, grinding welds, grinding some concrete and masonry. The only thing that it doesn't work for is the lack of a guard that is designed to work with diamond wheels.I needed to cut some concrete and I needed to use a diamond wheel to do it, come to find out you've got to drop a good chunck of change for a different guard.Well, I figured out another way to get done what I needed, didn't buy the new guard and still like the grinder. It should have come with a guard that would work for whatever you are going to use it for. That said, if you're not going to ever use diamond wheels, this grinder works well and I have no reservations recommending it.

3-0 out of 5 stars want to trade it for a coffee grinder?
I bought this tool with the sole intention of cutting concrete for repair work around the yard. The fact that the guard supplied isn't rated for the 4 1/2" diamond wheel was a shame, I should have looked at the price of the "additional accessories" before I bought this thing, it turns a reasonable purchase into one I would reconsider. So, casting safety asside, I used the standard guard. In all, it's a fair grinder. I cut through 3" slab no problem, ground the edges on a set of brick pillars. The switch then started to get 'sticky' from all the dust...I should have bought the Bosch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that heavy duty
DeWalt makes good tools for the homeowner. I purchased this grinder because it looked and handled well. I wanted to use the grinder with a cut off wheel but found it can not without an adapter. DeWalt needs to put this information on the box. I had to return the grinder for this reason. This heavy duty grinder only does light duty tasks. ... Read more

Just received my DW3178 blade from Amazon and see it is now made in China. Looked carefully on the Amazon site and couldn't find where it is made. For me there are too many other choices to buy a chinese blade, no matter how it cuts. Also wish Amazon more clearly showed country of origin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quailty at a fair price
Ok so I went from a steel blade that came with my skilsaw, to this, and can't praise the dewalt high enough. It cuts easily through 2x stock, and just as easily and clean through plywood. I doubt I'll go thru more then one blade a year, which for the price I paid its a small investment into a quality blade. And I would do it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars good blade, but there are others
This blade is a very nice blade. it cuts smoothly and I have never had it bind on me. But it is the same caliber as the porter cable riptide blades. I use this most frequently because its what my boss supplies to us for use in our saw. but it is inexpensive and a great value. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The DeWalt cordless 18-volt variable-speed jig saw is built with operator convenience in mind. Start with a keyless shoe that slides back and forth for cutting flush in tight spaces. Add to that a comfortable grip, which provides greater stability and control. Throw in clear markings every 15 degrees left and right of center that make it easy to find just the right angle for the job. Put it all together, and what you get is a pretty handy jig saw with a surprising amount of power (up to 2,000 spm) for a cordless. The unit weighs just 7.3 pounds and is easy to operate. Two orbital settings provide quicker, more accurate cuts in softer materials such as plastic and wood, while a straight-line setting is ideal for cutting metal and other hard surfaces. A removable plastic shoe cover protects easily scratched surfaces and locks securely into place for easy use, while a built-in dust blower clears debris ahead of the cut for better visibility. All in all, an impressive performer.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and powerful performer - but not terribly straight
I'm reviewing the DeWalt European 18v version (ELU) of this jig saw and I must say that it is truly a versatile and very powerful cordless jig saw but the trade-off, in my opinion, is that you can't ask this particular saw to do what -- say a Bosch 1584AVS -- corded jig saw can do. If you can live with certain limitations (a pronounced tendency to veer or wander especially if you try to follow a guide or push it along, an almost annoying plastic cutting guide that vibrates off repeatedly in operation, limited cutting power especially in thick materials like MDF, and some above-average vibration in thinner materials) then this jig saw warrants a much closer look. I'm a firm believer in buying items that fulfill their intended purpose, i.e. don't try to train a cat to bark like a dog, and so the portability, convenience and overall power more than offset this saw's shortcomings. If you a serious jig saw user, then you really should opt for a corded model with more power and better overall performance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tranny job
Saw arrived 4 PM Friday. Tried Sat. AM. Shipped back Monday PM. Dewalt said it had a misaligned transmission. It's corded counterpart has been my pleasure. This made all of 1" of cut before I detected a problem. The saw would not run beside a cutting guide. The blade was not parallel to the shoe. This is carelessness by Dewalt. It should not have been shipped in such a state. When I got home from UPS I found an e-mail from Amazon telling me that they had already shipped a replacement. I look forward to what I hope will be a sound, well aligned saw. It's corded brother is.
About 3 weeks later:
The replacement saw arrived quickly. Like the first saw, it is nice to use. But, like the first saw, the blade was set at an angle to the axis of the saw. Clearly this is not Amazons fault. They shipped a new saw upon reciept of my return request. Perhaps they got a bad lot. As they had replaced this item once, I was not about to dump it back on them. I called DeWalt. They seem to hire the cheapest kid they can find. He was not totally unknowledgeable, and was polite and sympathetic. All he could offer was to suggest that I contact the warranty center. When I looked them up on the net I found an old friend that was nearby and factory certified. He got the job & will do it under warranty at no cost to me. But I'll be waiting a couple weeks to get it back. He agreed that there was no excuse for the misalignment. The saw has weaknesses, as described in other reviews. But, it is stable in the cut, has good power, is easy to guide and a wonderful convienence. I used it for a few days before taking it to the shop. If you never nail down a cutting guide to deal with a problem spot or clamp one to sheet goods, then, you will not notice the misalignment. I've not lost a blade to pull out on this {only a few days of use} nor on my corded version of the same saw. The locking system is a little clumsy. The convience of tool free blade change is worth the trouble caused by the lack of clearance when you pull up the "crank". The big problem is that it is hard to get a good grip on the "crank" to be able to pull up hard enough to get the blade well locked in. The angle adjustment on the shoe could be improved with a bit of thought. This saw is basically a winner. DeWalt just got sloppy at the finish. This is intended as a wake up call to them. If you have such problems I hope you will write a letter of complaint to help refocus their attention on quality, which does include attention to detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Use Carefully
The sole plate of this unit has a poor locking mechanism. The lever releases randomly and the angle of cut can change in the middle of the job.The thicker the wood, the more the damage to the item you are working on.A Rube Goldberg modification can be applied to stabilize the locking mechanism but it negates its use to cut wanted angles. If you are thinking of DeWalt I suggest you look for some other brand of Jig Saw. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Compatibility with DW703
The good news is that these stops fit onto the DW703 very nicely. The bad news is that when set fully out, there is only 3 2/3 inches between the backstop and the crown stop. Not much room at all to work with, so I hope your crowns are small.

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could design and sell a product like this I'd be rich
Yes, they should be a bit longer to allow six inch crown. They should also have a quick release mechanism.but these are minor complaints.
Look closely at the picture.I can't understand how they can charge this price for an item that obviously can be made for 1/10 the price (look at the picture again).I still bought them because you really must have them if you do any anount of crown. The real disapointment is that for that much money you'd think they would at least be square.Mine are not (out of the box). When dewalt sat down and designed this thing there were only two basic requirements - it must attach to the side of the saw with a slot that allows adjustment and then turn square so as to be parrallel to the fence. It is totally unbelievable that they could fail at this.No name tools manufactured on a dirt floor in the south pacific would likely be more succesful in producing this product.
On the flip side I still use this product all the time and it is in fact very helpfull when working with crown.

4-0 out of 5 stars good idea
I have these on my DW708 and the really help. HOWEVER they arent long enough for really large crown and I would like them to incorperate a quick release device . This would prevent time consuming removal when switching to different materials .Beyond this they are very nice . ... Read more
