4-0 out of 5 stars Nice top, but consider the insert plate....
The top seems really nice. Well thought out, nice attachments and capabilities, but what happened with the router plates? I have had to purchase two different plates with different size openings to accomodate different size bits, and even then, it's often not an ideal sized opening. Where are the interchangeable insert rings? Who forgot about those? Supposedly, the new aluminum plate has inserts, however, I haven't actually seen one yet....Maybe when they materialize, this oversight will be history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emphasis on Functionality
Simple approaches are often the best.Laminated MDF makes up what Fine Woodworking has called one of the best-machined tops you can buy.A solid aluminum front track provides both t-bar and t-slot.And is currently packaged with an undrilled insert plate.

Engineering includes adjustable width for the t-slot, and twelve point leveling for the insert. The latter can be something of an irritant when you are trying to level a pro-lift and 7518 class router.Fortunately it's an ordeal that one has to face only once.Unless you like to use a variety of inserts, which I don't recommend.

Assembly takes less than an hour. The top expects to be used with Bench Dog's 36-inch ProFence, but any edge mounted fence, like the Jessem Mast-R-Fence should work, given some determination.

[Part II of 'How to Build a Really Expensive Router Table']

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TABLE
Needing to replace my old router table, I must have looked at every table available before settling on the Bench Dog. In use for approximately a year in my home shop, it has proved to be a high quality, well designed piece of equipment.

At the time I bought the top, I didn't have an extra $150.00 for Bench Dog's cabinet, and made one from MDF that works fine. One thing to note if you build your own cabinet, Bench Dog states in their manual, that to maintain the warranty, you must use their mounting hardware and their mounting method when installing the top to a custom cabinet. This is a fairly simple procedure, and a good diagram is provided for locating the bolts and cross dowels provided.

Two features that are a real plus:

1. The double track along the front edge. One fits a miter gage, the other a t-slot for feather boards. The Bench Dog fence that is available for this table has the same t-slot for mounting feather boards, guards and other accessories. Good by to clamping feather boards to the edge of the table.

2. The insert plate is mounted nearer to the front edge ratherthan in the center of the tabletop. I thought this was an odd design until I found out the reasoning behind it. It is about 8" from the front edge of the table to the center of the router bit, and from the rear edge it is about 16". This feature allows you to have your work up close when working on smaller pieces, working from the front side. By flipping the fence to face the rear of the table, you can work on the wide side (back) of the table. I've found this extra width ideal when working on cabinet doors.

Concerning the insert plates, I've read of problems encountered with acrylic plates sagging under the weight of the router. So far,I have used only the phenolic plates supplied by Bench Dog and have had no sagging problems with these. My router, which is listed at 12 lbs, spends most of its time hanging under the table. No sagging problems to date. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful with your measurements
The dimensions listed are slightly inaccurate. The depth of the plate was not 3/8" (.375) but .344 as measured with a micrometer. Check your measurements! Also it is not listed on the package but the rounded corners for the plate were cut with a circle of 3/4" diameter as relayed by their tech support. Important if your making your own template.

And yes, the placement of the holes means that your Bosch 1618 D-Handle will have to be removed in order to fit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything Fits
All the holes line up, and it strong enough to hold the router without bending or warping.Really not much to this, but I have no complaints. ... Read more
