Editorial Review

Need a reliable straight line without spending a bundle? This is our choice. Granted, this laser’s not self-leveling, but it’s easy to level and does produce a dead-on accurate horizontal or vertical line. It attaches easily to a wall with either the magnetic hanging pin or the included drill anchor wall mounts. Because it’s a single pin hanger, adjustments are as easy as the touch of a finger. Nice storage bag keeps the tool clean and protected. Just the right tool for the homeowner who’s adding a chair rail, wallpaper border, shelving, cabinets, tile, or a host of other projects. You could spend more for a self-leveling unit, but we think this suits most homeowner’s needs.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Transmits a straight line in horizontal and vertical direction
  • Easy wall-mount system uses one pin for hands free convenience
  • Includes storage bag, magnetic and drill anchor wall mounts

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed, poorly engineered.
The purpose of this tool is to project a relatively long and straight laser line for alignment, construction, or what have you.As an engineer and general fan of Black and Decker's products, I was sadly surprised to find out that this product is neither useful or accurate.

The good news:
It runs on a 9v battery (cheap and easy to replace).Comes with two different mounting options in addition to the magnetic base.

The bad news:
1. The line is inconsistently bright along it's projected path.It seems about 2 to 3 times brighter in the center than on the far edges. This effect is disturbing because it's also thicker in the center. At the edges, the line is so dim that you need enhancement glasses (sort of like safety glasses, but red in color) to see it OR you have to use it in near total darkness.

2. The bubble levels inside the unit are too small, inaccurate, and not adjustable. When I placed this unit on my tablesaw (which was precisely aligned and leveled) it shows (incorrectly) that the saw is tilted about 2-3 deg. This is a huge problem and makes the unit difficult to justify. The owner's manual says that the levels are only calibrated to the laser line when held or hung up against a vertical surface.Okay, but what if you want to lay tile, place a fencepost, or align cabinets?

3. Mounting the laser to the wall requires drilling a hole. The base for wall mounting requires a small hole in the wall and as you rotate the base, three prongs expand out, temporarily locking the base to the wall. It's a pretty good system, but other manufacturers have systems that allow vertical surface use without drilling. It'd be a hassle to have to fill and paint the little holes constantly.

4. The bonehead that designed this did NOT for some unknown reason, make the sides square. So you cannot simply lie it on either side and expect a horizontal line...I'm lost on this one.Miserable engineering at it's worst.

In short, this unit is really only good at projecting a straight line.YOU have to level that line.Get a plumb bob or a 4' level, set this up and adjust the line it projects to level, then you're set. But, on the other hand, if you have a 4' level and plumb bob, all this unit provides is a simple, straight line, confirming your measurements.

Pros: Small, simple, 9V common battery power supply.Comes with case.

Cons: Not self-leveling.Must use other tools to adjust.Case not square.Cannot project line from a horizontal surface.

Even on sale for $20, it's hard to justify this product. It really only projects a line...and not even a straight one.A straight edge would work as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
"It's my favorite tool" or so I told my kids when they gave it to me for my birthday. In reality, it is a basic laser pointer in a fancy package.Yes, it produces a straight laser line on the wall or floor, but you need to use a manual level to get it correct. It is difficult to hang on the wall and cannot be done without putting a small nail hole in a spot where you probably don't want one.Spend the extra money and buy a better mounting, self leveling and more accurate one if you need things to be absolutely perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Door Stop
This is the BIGGEST waste of money there is. I can eye a better level line than this thing. It doesn't give you a level line until you use a real level, to level it???? whats the point??? Save your money. This thing makes a better door stop than a laser level. ... Read more

The smooth, contoured grip on Black & Decker's Mouse sander/polisher fits snugly in your hand, making this tool remarkably easy to use. The two interchangeable bases are easy to put on and take off (although we had to do it a couple of times to get the hang of it). The iron shaped base is specially designed for larger sanding, scrubbing, and polishing jobs, while the base with a detail tip is perfect for maneuvering in smaller, hard-to-reach areas. The Velcro fastening system makes paper changes quick and easy, saving you both time and frustration. And, because the tip of the sandpaper commonly wears out first, each sheet of sandpaper comes with an extra tab; simply rip the tab off along the perforated lines and use it to replace the tip when it wears out. The Mouse runs at 11,000 orbits per minute, a nice balance between strength and finesse.

We tested ours sanding in between chair spindles and were immediately impressed with the smooth (and fast) results. Then we switched bases and put the Mouse to work on larger surfaces; vibration was minimal. The Mouse is easy to control--which is a big plus if you plan to use the tool for long periods of time. It's a great buy for home hobbyists. In fact, when you get right down to it, your imagination might be the only limit on how many projects this tool can tackle. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars B&D Mouse Blowing Oil!
I just bought the B&D Mouse sander for some detail work I am doing on walnut cases.I found after I started using it that it is blowing a fine mist of oil off of the bottom of the motor area - and staining the workpieces.I tried setting it in a small box and running it for about 45 minutes, only to find it still spraying out oil.Back to the store with this product.I'll buy higher quality instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
The Black & Decker mouse sander is a complete waste of money.A lot of "Flash & Thunder" but very little in the way of actual usefulness. It makes all the appropriate sounds and certainly feels like it's vibrating, but didn't perform very well at actually sanding someting.

If you want a sander to get in corners, give the Fein Multi-Master a shot. No, I have no connection to the Fein company in any way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really good - except
I've had my mouse for about a year. For the most part, it's had very light use. Recently, I started using it more and it's had moderate use this summer.

It fits my hand nicely, is friendly in terms of ease of use but the hooks on the pad have worn down to nothing. The sandpaper simply won't stick. I'm pretty disappointed since I'm in the middle of two projects I'd like to finish up before the rainy season begins. And it's had light use.

I've tried to find a new "interchangeable pad" for the regular tear drop sandpaper but there don't seem to be any. So I'm faced with purchasing another mouse or trying something else. The motor seems fine so I'm reluctant to buy a whole tool when it just needs a $5 part.

Also, the Black and Decker sandpaper wears very quickly. Fortunately, there are other makes of hook and loop sandpaper and these have been much more satisfactory. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Cordless screwdrivers are a wonderful invention, but some jobs around the house still require that extra control a conventional screwdriver can provide. The 3.6-volt, three-position Black & Decker 9078 screwdriver combines the best of both. As a power screwdriver, the unit operates at 180 rpm and offers up to 40 in./lbs. of torque, with 24 settings. A torque control collar allows the operator to match the torque to the job, reducing unwanted strips. A pistol grip and three-position handle allow the screwdriver to fit into some pretty tight spaces, while a spindle lock (located on the forward/reverse switch) allows the operator to use the unit as a conventional, manual screwdriver when necessary. This is especially helpful when starting and finishing screws. The screwdriver comes with five double-ended bits. Each locks securely into place and is easy to remove. The handle is also easy to adjust with just the push of a button. All in all it's a pretty handy little tool.--Carl Thress ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not powerful enough
Good for light tasks, but not powerful enough.

Like Black and Deckers other 3.6 volt driver, this one does not have removable batteries, so you cant exchange with your other 3.6 volt tools.

Try the PD600 6 volt model. Its just slightly more expensive, and can be used as both a pilot drill and a driver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, rugged, but shy of perfect
At this price point for an electric screwdriver, I have one recommendation: temper your expectations. With that I am happy to say that this screwdriver exceeded my tempered expectations.

Pros:
Even at its bargain price, this screwdriver comes with a torque clutch and a folding body style. The thick black and orage plastic casing make the screwdriver very tough.Scoffs and scratches are usually not noticeable. The speed is great, sometimes too great, such as when driving a screw into a plastic drywall anchor, where too fast may soften or melt the plastic.

To my surprise, this screwdriver is fairly powerful.I don't know how much more powerful an electric screwdriver needs to be.I've driven 2" long screws into studs with this thing and it has never stalled. In fact, sometimes the screwdriver's power make it difficult to hold without folding it at an angle to get more leverage.

Cons:
The one serious complaint I have is with the torque clutch. With a setting that goes from 0-20 I would have expected a lot of adjustability. But even at its lowest torque setting, the clutch on my screwdriver has rarely slipped.I don't know if this is a problem with my particular unit, but it's very annoying to have to hand-tighten screws in fear of stripping them.

And from the "have the cake and eat it too" department, I wish that the screwdriver is smaller and lighter. It is not huge but it is larger and heavier than I expected.

Buy overall, this is a great screw driver. If the torque clutch had a more effective range of adjustment I would have given it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great screwdriver for daily use
I have just bought my third B&D 3.6 volt screwdriver because I want to have a large shop and wanted to have one available in several areas. This is a very good screwdriver. Not too large but great for getting into smaller places or just to carry around. The power is much better than the 2.6 volt ones.It will handle most every day wood working for the weekend worker. If you want to do heavy duty work move up to the big brother of the 3.6 volt.I like the design, looks and overall quality. ... Maintaining a straight, accurate cut through an entire length of siding, plywood or paneling isn't always easy. The 14.4-volt Black & Decker CS144B FireStorm circular saw is designed to make it so. The FireStorm features an in-line blade design. The handle and blade line up straight to help ensure accurate results. It also boasts Black & Decker's exclusive Sight-Line window, which allows the operator to maintain a clear overhead view of the cut line at all times. The blade itself is thinner than standard circular saw blades, so it removes less material, reducing spoilage and boosting efficiency. With an operating speed of 2,200 rpm and the highest torque in its class (50 in./lbs.), the FireStorm can power through 2x lumber and cut up to 70 2x4s on a single charge. Not bad, especially when you consider the added convenience of having no power cord to get in the way or hold you down. All in all a pretty good value.--Carl Thress ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Can I borrow your charger?
Bought this item for my wife for yardwork-tree branches and the like. Then the charger took a dump-Can't figure out why. It was a clearance item at Amazon.com partner Target. But guess what? 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect For My Needs
I've owned this for a few months, and I love it.I use it strictly for activating heat-shrinkwrap around cables, for AV installations.I was attracted to this model by its low price, and because it comes with a case.

I find the ergonomics to be great.Overall, the design seems well thought out.

I haven't used it for removing paint, and I doubt that I will.I'm sure that in that more demanding roll, there will be greater chance for product failure. However, the previous poster's experience has to be the rare exception, rather than the rule.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very effective trimmer
Positive: I found this to be a great trimmer .It quickly and effectively cut through branches up to 3/8 of an inch (as stated in the manual) and was light and easy to use. While I might not suggest it if you have a great number of bushes to deal with, it sure worked really well with the four or five that I trimmed down and shaped.

Negative: The only issue I had with it is the built-in cord holder. If you plan on using a 25 (or 50 foot) extension cord, I would venture a guess that you should be using a 16 (or 14) guage cord, and the hole for the cord to loop through is a little tight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine
I bought this months ago, and after using it myself, my daughter borrowed it and she also loves it.I wouldn't be surprised if she bought one for herself (she is NOT keeping MINE). It's lightweight, and easy for a woman to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I decided to get my husband this trimmer for father' day after seeing him trim our hedges with a small pair of pruning shears. He loves it!!!As stated, it comes fully assembled.Just get an extension cord, plug it in, and go for it.It was light weight but not flimsy. He couldn't believe how easy it was and how fast it was.We didn't know why we had not purchased one earlier. The price is great, the product is great and you will love it.Note...if you want to trim larger branches, Black and Decker makes larger trimmers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cough up the bucks for a good charger
The PS140 is a perfectly good battery - you can get those at auction sites for about $30. I just got 3 brand new in the package for $100 and that included shipping!

My tools get tons of usage daily. They are the Black and Decker 14.4v "Firestorm" drill; circular saw and reciprocating saw.

To reviewer J. Jackson, you get what you pay for. The PS180 charger, that came with the above mentioned tools, is the lowest quality, piece of #@&* charger you can get for the B&D PS140 (post style) 14.4v battery. I wouldn't give $5 for one of them. And yes, I too burned them out in no time at all.

The PS180 does not turn off after the battery is charged which is why the battery is always hot when you pull it out and that's just not good for the battery or the charger.

(By the way, shouldn't use the battery `til it cools down & always unplug the charger when you're done with it and bad batteries will kill the charger).

I bought a couple of PS1514BU B&D chargers a couple of years ago but can't find them anymore. They have a red indicator while charging, green when charged and stop operating when the battery is charged. You can leave it in there all night and the battery is cool when removed. Chargers and batteries are still in great shape and get charged about every three days!

I am VERY interested in B&D's PS1MVC. It is a multi-voltage unit that charges 8.4v, 9.6v, 12.0v and 14.4v B&D batteries. Among other things, it indicates when the battery is charged and if thebattery has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Check out the reviews on Amazon but go elsewhere to buy it. Some auction sites have them brand new for about $30.

4-0 out of 5 stars SOME FACTS ABOUT FIRESTORM POST BATTERIES
Remember you get what you pay for.I have been told that a battery which goes bad can destroy a charger. Some of the previous comments indicate this may have taken place when they switched a non-charging battery to a new charger and burned out both chargers.

The 14.4 post charger can be found on ebay, and reliabletools.com where I bought mine.
Dewalt 14.4 batteries will work in OLD STYLE - post type (not the new slide type) tools.
Batteries must be fully drained each time to avoid imprinting.
Charge for full time requirement, usually 3 hrs., for the old style firestorm charger.
Unplug charging unit when not in use to extend life of charger.
I have seen Dewalt batteries, Firstorm batteries (post style) and dewalt chargers at Lowes hardware.
I have aquired these rules from destroying my own tools and searching for replacement tools.Hope this helps.

2-0 out of 5 stars great tools -- bad charger
I won't go into great detail since others have already stated my problem, but the point is well taken that a cordless tool is only as good as the charger. My charger died and finding a replacement seems impossible.I'll stay away from Black and Decker tools in the future for this reason.

UPDATE -- I took the advice of one of the other reviewers, bought a new B&D charger at a reasonable price, and had that charger go bad within weeks of my purchase.Never again! ... Read more

If you're in the market for a solid, economical electric mower, the Black & Decker 18-inch electric mower is worth a look. Powered by a high-efficiency, 6.5 amp, Black & Decker motor, this mower offers quiet, hassle-free operation, without the mess and expense of gas-and-oil models. No need for tune-ups and pull starts, either. This mower weighs just 36 pounds and features an 18-inch cutting blade with side discharge (optional side bag sold separately); a rust-proof, polymer deck; and one-touch height adjustment (from 1 to 3-1/2 inches). Tool-free assembly means you'll be up and mowing quickly, while a lifetime deck warranty and two-year warranty on the mower itself provide added peace of mind. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cool, easy to use.
I grew up with a gas mower. It was big and smelly but did the job.I actually ordered a gas mower from Amazon but it took forever to come, so I switched to this mower since my lawn needed cutting. This mower works great, and you never smell like gasoline! Very easy to start and stop, and super easy to put together. It is also very lightweight - anyone can push it around. The toughest part is the electric cord, which you get used to pretty quickly - it's just like a vacuum. So any lawn with a lot of trees or anything above .25 acres is not going to be very workable. But for small lawns with few obstacles, it is pretty easy to use.

The bag is also very helpful and handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 reasons to get this mower, and 2 reasons not to
I've had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I'm out mowing, I'm thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it.So needless to say, I've thought a lot about this. Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:

1. It's cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back. It's probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.

2. It's light.A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they're so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn't need to be self-propelled.You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.

3. It's easy to start. No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start.Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.

4. It's quiet.Well, okay, it's not THAT quiet.But it's quieter than most.

5. It doesn't smell. The lawn doesn't smell like gas fumes after you're all done.

6. It's better for the environment.Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.

Sounds great so far, right?Well, before you click that "Add to Shopping Cart" button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:

1. The cord.Yep, there's no battery here, so you're attached to your house's electricity the entire time.In practice, I haven't found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it's easy to manage. But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore. If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.

(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you're choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)

2. The optional mulching bag is small. If I'm collecting my grass clippings, I'll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run.It gets to be pretty annoying. As a result, I usually just let the clippings return to the lawn, which is better for the lawn anyway, even if it doesn't look as pretty.

And there you have it.Six reasons to buy it, and two not to.You'll have to make your own decision. As for myself, I've been very happy with my purchase thus far, and will probably make my next mower a Black and Decker electric model as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Efficient eco-friendly machine
Wanted something eco-friendly, as I have a small space in California. This machine is easy to put together, runs smoothly and quietly, and is super easy to maneuver.Only drawback is the cord pulls out of the power socket quite a bit.Other than that, great workout if you handle the machine with one hand and lasso the extension cord with the other.Who knew mowing a lawn could be so much fun?!My neighbors just drive by and smile, as they foolishly pay their gardners.... ... Editorial Review

We've always hated to trim hedges, but that might be because wenever had our hands on Black & Decker's new Hedge Hog cordless trimmer. It's light, hungry, and powerful--and did we mention cordless? Its14.4-volt battery will hold a charge for 40 minutes (who really wantsto labor longer than that anyway?) and recharges in three hours. At agood clip, you can cover 1,000 square feet on a single charge. Therubber grips feel good in hand and cut vibration to nearly nothing. Itweighs in at 6 pounds but feels lighter. A nice plus: The battery isinterchangeable with Black and Decker's other Firestorm tools. Thisone's a winner. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Much A Help and Worth a Try
We bought this product some time ago - and we are still happy with it.It's durable and convenient, and It holds a charge for quite a long time fully charged. We found it quite helpful around our yard - It's nice not to fuss with electrical cords. My husband is very pleased with it, and commented it "Works Very Good".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the $$
First off I found it to be a great hedge trimmer for the $$ buck.Pretty well made and despite what "one" person wrote in another review it "does" seem to fit all the 14v firestorm tools I found at a leading hardware store. If you don't want to deal with a cord, or another gas powered tool I would BUY it!

1-0 out of 5 stars False advertising: The American way?
I'm looking for a hedge trimmer to replace my venerable Black & Decker 16" corded electric hedge trimmer. When I saw this B&D cordless hedge trimmer (CHT500) advertised "Removable 14.4v FireStorm battery interchanges with other 14.4v FireStorm products," I thought it would be perfect because I also own a B&D 14.4 volt FireStorm cordless drill. I already have two battery packs for my drill, so three packs would provide ample power to trim my back hedges and bushes in front. I researched the trimmer on B&D's Web site, but it had a number of contradictions. (22" blade and 24" blade advertised on the same page--it has a 22" blade. 14.4v and 18.0v advertised on the same page--it's 14.4v. Maybe that's why I didn't believe it when it listed the PS140 battery under Accessories.) I ordered it from Amazon.com and even with free Super Saver Shipping, it arrived in only three days!

Imagine my irritation (and vocabulary) when I saw the battery was, in fact, nothing like the batteries for my 14.4v FireStorm cordless drill! The trimmer uses a PS140 Type 3 (push-in) and the drill uses an FSB14 (slide-on). They're nothing alike (except for being 14.4v.

The instructions state that the battery is shipped in a run-down condition, not a fully-discharged condition, so it only requires a 3-hour charge. I charged it for three hours, and, Saturday morning, I went outside and fired it up. It cut great! Having no cord is great! Unfortunately, it died after a mere 15 minutes. (Their Web site says its charge lasts 40 minutes.) Well, at least I got one bush done. Too bad I have five more bushes and about ninety feet of honeysuckles to trim. Now you can see why I liked the idea of three battery packs.

I thought that maybe the instructions are wrong and it actually shipped fully-discharged (which requires an 8-hour charge), so I charged it for eight hours. Sunday morning, I went out to tackle the rest of the hedges. I was outside for 45 minutes before it died. If I'm generous, it ran for the advertised 40 minutes, and I was able to do four evergreen bushes and part of an I-don't-know-what-it-is bush, but I had to finish up with my electric trimmer. I still haven't gotten to the honeysuckles.

My wife drove to the local B&D location and returned it. They accepted it without a problem. We'll see how quickly B&D sends me a check.

I've since bought the corded electric 24" Hedge Hog trimmer (HS2400). Read my review of it to see if I can avoid cutting the extension cord...

CHT500 summary:
Cuts well, even 3/8" woody branches.
Sometimes you need multiple passes--as with any trimmer.
I like the design and the balance.
The handles are comfortable and easy to use horizontally and vertically.
Includes a vinyl blade sheath (which the HS2400 does not--why?).
Cuts about twenty feet of 3-foot tall evergreen bushes in a single charge.
If you want more than 40 minutes of runtime, buy an electric trimmer. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Change to Ryobi
My first ever cordless drill, was one of the green 18V PS series drills made my Black and Decker.

Over time, I went through 3 different chargers, until I got one of the bigger black ones that look like a big platform shoe sole.

The batteries gave their spirit and eventually so did the drill motor.

As it was going out, I bought an orange Firestorm drill to find to my pleasant surprise that there was now a gearbox and to my dismay that Black & Decker had decided to change the battery style from the pod style batteries to the slide in batteries.

After having gone through a couple of battery packs for the old style B&D I understand why they changed their style, since their old pod style batteries would fall apart physically.

The Orange FS with the slide in battery, gearbox and the push button changeable chuck was an improvement over the old style drills, and it will hold out decently (not great) under heavy use, though the motor is still holding up without smelling funny like in the old single speed PS series drill.

The one MAJOR disappointing point with the FS drill is the charger. It is beyond me, why B&D refuses to build and include a half way decent charger with their tool sets.

It is my opinion and in contrast with one of the reviewers, that the B&D chargers go bad, take the battery with them, and then eventually lead to the demise of the drill (low voltage batteries leading to drill stalling).

A year ago, I bought, a closeout homelite set at Home Depot (made by Ryobi) that was for gardening, (2 betteries, charger, pruner, branch cutter and electric saw) for $70.

Well, after examining the Ryobi charger I was amazed. They are sturdier, and better build, and their power consumption is much higher than that even of the DeWalt chargers, which to me translates to better regulation and higher current capacity, something a battery would appreciate.

At the time I was ready to buy the new 7-set B&D FS set that B&D pulled out of the market quickly, and at the end I ended up switching to Ryobi.

I recommend to those who do not have a substantial investment in B&D tools and are not hard core professionals, to give Ryobi another look, they are no longer the bottom of the line manufacturer I remember them to be, especially in cordless tools.

Though they might not be Milwaukee, or Dewalt, they represent an excellent value, and where else can you get a 480 in/lbs 3 speed 18V drill body on sale for $50?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fire Storm ROCKS!!
In spite of the above 1 star review, I have been using my B/D Fire Storm 18v Drill for about 2 years. I have put this drill through HELL. I have even hooked up an auger type device and used the drill to dig POST HOLES with!!! I crank the torque on that bad boy to MAX and go to town!
The two batteries that came with it are now giving up the ghost so I am now in the market for another drill as the price for two batteries is almost more than half the price for another drill. I may look for a B/D Fire Storm 18v Impact/Hammer drill next time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery Charger Solution??
I will add my two cents to many other reviews which mention problems with Black&Decker Firestorm battery chargers --- STAY AWAY FROM Black & Decker battery-powered tools.I purchased a second B&D Firestorm 18V drill just to get a new charger (the one with my first drill went bad).In no time, the second charger went bad. I ordered two MORE chargers from the B&D warranty/service website. One went bad after a few months, and when I then tried the second one IT NEVER WORKED AT ALL.Trying to contact B&D is impossible, you just get an automated run-around.BEWARE!

UPDATE: In all fairness, after writing this review I was FINALLY able to get thru to a Customer Service rep at B&D who is sending a charger -- no charge.Kudos to Holly at B&D and an upgrade to 3 stars. Also, it was explained to me that I should test my battery packs for bad cell(s).Charging "bad" battery packs will ruin the charger.Even a seemingly "good" battery pack can have a bad cell and will fry a charger.I was given a battery test procedure which I also found in a Service Bulletin on the web at www.dewaltservicenet.com.Testing Procedure:Place the battery pack in the charger for 2 minutes, take the battery pack out, put a volt meter on it and if it is less than 18V you have a bad cell(s) and the battery pack is bad.Continuing to charge a bad battery pack eventually ruins the charger (4 times in my case -- duh!).I followed this procedure and sure enough found one battery out of four was bad (although it seemed to run the drill just fine).Kind of an inconvenient thing to have to do prior to charging a battery pack, but it beats buying more chargers and preserves my investment in drills and batteries. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fills a niche that is otherwise missing
I needed a jig saw to cut out some outlets for putting up bead board.I settled on this one because I didn't need it for everyday or professional use and I was wasn't going to spend $100+ for a DeWALT, PC, Ridgid, Bosch, etc. only to use it 3 times a year.

This jig saw bridges the gap between the cheap ones that couldn't cut through butter, and the pricy ones. The Skil is actually priced right in the middle but I read the reviews and stayed away from it!!

I was worried about this saw after I bought it because of the low price but have been pleasantly surprised.Free hand is a little sloppy, as you cannot turn off the orbital action like on most top models.Other than that it is a great value

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Saw At A Great Price!
I just purchased this saw and it is great! It has power yet it is quiet, easy to view line-of-cut, convenient features (I've had no problem with the dust extractor device, it's made to clip on and off), and I've had no problem following a line, unlike the first review guy who NEVER used an orbital saw before (there is Variable Speed Control for guys with lesser arm strength!). Just as good as the way more expensive brands!

1-0 out of 5 stars I've Had Lots of Power Tools
Needed a new jig saw to cut some countertops.I did some research into this saw and liked the amps and size.I have never used an orbital saw before, but sounded like a good idea.Imagine my surprise when my cut was all over when freehanding and still horrible when using a straight edge.I tried all three settings but all cut the same.I do like the quick blade release but that is about it.I almost wrecked an expensive countertop and had to pull out my 10 old reliable skill jig saw.Would not recommend it and would return it if I hadn't thrown away the box. ... Editorial Review

With the Black & Decker Leaf Hog, you can clean up both the deck and the lawn with one reasonably priced and easy-to-maintain machine. This blower/vac is electric, so it requires an extension cord and an electric outlet to run, but there's nothing else to set up or maintain. The 12 amp motor has considerable power for its size, more than enough to clear driveways or decks or blow off sections of lawn. At just over 7 pounds, the Leaf Hog is light enough to use for long periods of time, and it's also quiet enough to use at any time of day. Switching from blowing to vacuuming is a snap--literally. The correct button took us a moment to find, but once you've located it, you simply depress it and remove the blowing unit, then attach the vacuum extension in its place. The extension has a bag for mulch, which attaches with a small clasp. When vacuuming, the unit mulches by sucking leaves through the fan assembly. Though this model, with its patented Vortex anticlog vacuum system, does a better job of remaining unclogged than most, you still need to be careful to avoid rocks and sticks. It also has a variable-speed control that lets you choose between 150 and 200 mph blower speed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker does it again!
Whilst at a construction trade show I overheard two B & D reps talking. One said "the construction grade tools are well designed, but the consumer drills, for example are designed for a twelve hourlife". This is not unrealistic for a weekend warrior who might use the drill once or twice a year, drilling the occasional holes.

The Leaf Hog is apparently in the same category, based on sterling initial reviews, I put my doubts aside and bought one. With about 35 hours of use, it has quit.

Buyer beware!

I had this product for about 15 months and the motor burned up. I didn't use it a great deal either.I would not recommend this product.

We have had ourleaf hog for a little over a year. After using it for three times the off button stopped working! the only way to turn it off was pulling the plug. Also the on / off button is labelled so poorly that when the unit is dusty one can not tell the difference between the on/off button and the button that takes of the housing covering the impeller. After my husband cut his leg with the rotating impeller and not able to turn off the unit we stopped using this horrilbe product.I just looked to see if it has been recalled.Watch out people! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to a real job
I have used this drill for over 6 months now and I can say that I hate it. Its clutch slips even when screwing into the softest of woods. I have seen a 12v cheap drill run circles around it in the most simple of jobs. I would tell anyone who would listen to go get a Dewalt. My Dewalt 18v can beat anything except for Dewalt's nicer models.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Cheap!
The B & D 18v drill w/2batteries was a great buy. And, for over a year, it looked like a wise choice. But then came the problem with the charger -- or one of the batteries.Apparently, a bad battery will kill a charger. So, 2 ruined chargers and one dead (defective?) battery later, I am left with a drill, maybe 1 good battery, but no charger.I'm not taking a chance on another charger. It will likely die as the others -- and that's an answer way too expensive to a problem that probably won't go away. Now I'm doing what I should have done -- pony up a few more $'s for a quality product. And what remains of my B & D drill 'kit' goes to Ebay.

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I bought the 18 volt Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and was initially pleased with the price and performance.

After approximately 14 months one of the batteries and the charger both failed. Now I am stuck with a drill, one battery and no way to charge it unless I buy a new charger. Even then, I still would have only one battery.I have learned that the gears in the drill are plastic and the stalling out I read about in other reviews is a common affliction.

Overall, it has not been a purchase that I am happy with, but when you shop price Vs quality you are at risk.My Dewalt 12 volt runs circles around the B&D 18 volt, so draw your own conclusions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The drill works ok but the batteries die very fast.
I bought 4 of these drills - two for me and two for friends.
All batteries get tired quickly with usage and they die quickly ( in that they no longer hold a charge at all ). A new battery costs $35 and I only paid $45 for the complete drill/charger/bits so buying new batteries seems like a waste. I bought the Dewalt drill ($180) which came with two batteries and _really_ like it. It charges fully in 1 hour has _lots_ of power and the batteries last quite a while.

3-0 out of 5 stars I CAN TELL YOU WHERE TO GET THE CHARGER
...but if you've got the cash, you might as well go ahead and get a REAL drill. The number one problem I have with this lemon is that it can't hold small bits...the chuck is poorly designed.I just had the charger conk out on me...first of all, these batteries don't hold a charge for too long; now, no one carries the charger...

Well, almost no one:
