Editorial Review

This kit offers the perfect armload of cordless tools forthe homeowner: drill, circular saw, cut saw, and flashlight, two14.4-volt batteries, a charger, and a case to keep it all in. Thedrill is sturdy and comfortable, has a keyless chuck, andincludes a 24-position clutch for as much torque as you need. Thecut saw is amazingly light, so even the smallest hands will haveno problem keeping control of it. It makes you want to take out awall or prune a tree in the backyard just to exercise your power. The flashlight switches easily from a floodlight to a spot beam. The star of the show, however, is the Firestorm circularsaw. Light, compact, and maneuverable, the tool shows off Black &Decker's patented Sightline window atop the blade guard. A clearwindow offers a straight, bird's-eye view of your cut path tostart and keep you precisely on your cutting line. We liked thissaw especially because it's the first of its kind to come outwith an in-line blade design--meaning the saw's handle is rightbehind the blade. With the line of force directly behind thecutter it's easier to make a true, straight cut. You can't buyall these tools separately for anywhere near the price of thekit, so we think it's a heck of a deal. --Kris Jensen-VanHeste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Battery Charger Problem
I read the other review about the problem with the Black & Decker battery charger.I also had my charger quit on me.I had 2 batteries that came with the drill. I bought another 14.4 volt B&D product so I could continue to use the drill.I quickly found out it wasn't the battery charger that was causing the problem. When I tried to recharge one of the old batteries in my new charger, it quit like the old one. After calling B&D, I was told the problem is with the battery.Once the battery goes, so will the charger. The problem is you never know when your battery is about to go until it is too late and your charger is killed as well.I think I'll cut my losses and try another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars serves the homeowner well
i've had my set now for at least 2 years. i started with the drill kit and added the sawzall and circular saw.i don't have the flashlight but am keeping my eyes out for cheap deal on one.

the drill works very well. using it for a satellite tv business i've probably put mine through more abuse than the average homeowner would.it has plenty of power for most applications.occasionally i wish it was a bit lighter for finesse stuff but i shouldnt complain.sometimes the drill bit works itself loose and falls out (rare) but that may just be a symptom of having a quicker chuck system which i think is worth it.i did a job in the pouring rain last week knowing full well i could destroy the drill.a couple days later some minor surface rust made the chuck hard to work but after only 2 changes it was back to normal and the drill is as good as ever.

the sawzall is awesome.tons of power.i've used it many times.my favorite application is with the pruning blade on small brush and branches.zips right through it.

the circular saw is ok.it does bind up occasionally more than a corded saw would.the power doesnt feel as strong as sawzall but that could be an illusion.its great for 2x4's, plywood, etc when you just cant use a corded saw (and even sometimes when you could!)

the batteries have held up well i'd say overall.i'm up to 4 of them that i rotate.if i only had one i'm sure it wouldnt be enough.but with 4 i always have a couple ready to go.
i wish the charger was an intelligent rapid charger but hey, if you are buying something that costs about half what other sets cost they have to be saving money somewhere.an optional intelligent rapid charger would be a nice option.

**there is definatley a problem with the chargers burning out after a while.i can't put my finger on a cause but mine were about 2 years old when they both went.i'm wondering if resistance of a dying battery might trip something in the charger making it die.i threw out my first one then it happened to the second a month later leaving me up a creek.i dug around and found an old charger of similar voltage and cut off the base and spliced it on.so far so good.it is definately the plug (ac to dc transformer) that blows, not a short in the base itself which is fine and can be reused if you replace the plug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for the money
I got this set in the Firestorm with 18v of power. So I cannot speak directly for this product, but i can for black and decker.

Really nice for the money, black and decker is made by or in conjunction with dewalt. I have had my set for about two years now and all the tools work well, however, I am starting to notice that the batteries are beginning to die, which is bad because new batteries are quite costly. I think once this set goes, i will but it again. the drill performs well, and boths saws are quite impessive. changing blades and bits are simple ... Read more

Editorial Review

Black & Decker's Grass Hog offers the convenience of cordless power without the mess of fuel. Requiring virtually no tune-ups and no fussing with gasoline and oil mixtures, the Grass Hog gives you quiet, reliable, maintenance-free power at the flip of a switch. True, battery power doesn't measure up to the strength of a gas engine, but maybe you don't need all that power (and pollution) anyway.

This trimmer takes just a few minutes to put together, and its durable construction--backed by Black & Decker's two-year warranty--is immediately obvious. With a 12-inch cutting path--the largest of any battery-powered trimmer--the Grass Hog works quickly. It is limited to light-duty cutting of grass and foliage but can handle most homeowners' needs for weekend weed whacking. The straight-shaft design lets you easily reach under decks and stairs, and the adjustable handles offer a comfortable grip. The auto feed spool releases trimmer line as it's needed, with no tapping of the spool head required. The edger feature is easy to engage and does a decent job of cleaning up around paving stones and concrete, although it's not as powerful as gas and corded electric models when cutting extensive edges along walkways and driveways.

Weighing over 10 pounds, the Grass Hog may be a bit heavy for some users, but for small, light-duty jobs, most homeowners should find it to be quite manageable. As with all power equipment, trimmers must be handled with caution. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating this serious piece of equipment. --Michelle McSweeney ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars battery lives 10 minutes or less
If you live on the 43rd floor this is the trimmer for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery dies and no go!
We loved this trimmer. Lightweight, easy to manuever, no bumping or cutting to get line! Our yard is fairly small, so the charge was plenty to finish the job. HOWEVER, this - our third year - it was not holding a charge. I called B&D - that's just what happens. WHAT? A new battery pack is about $30-35. A new corded model ST-4000 is about $35.00. They should make you aware that you will be either buying new batteries or replacing the unit every three-four years. OUCH!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dependable, Easy to Use.
I'm on my second season with this edger and, so far, no problems.I have .3 acres on a corner lot. That's a lot of sidewalks and fenceing to edge.If I do the entire yard in one day, the battery does run down, but I get most of the yard done.Typically, I do the front yard one day and the back yard another day (mow and edge) just because it's a lot of work for this old girl.I'm not getting any younger. When I split the work up this way, my edger and matching cordless lawnmower handle the load quite well.Hopefully, I'll continue to get good service. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bad quality
The tool idea is good, however the power and quality of materials is inferior. Mine is already making an awful noise and "freezing". I used it to cut 2x4's during a room's renovation. I'll never buy black & Decker garbage again.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is an orange blob of frustration
I got an older version of this saw (two years ago) and unless there have been significant improvements, save your money. The gel handles are probably a good idea as the unit we have did equal damage to what's being cut and the person doing the cutting. As for the damage it does to whatever you're trying to damage, the word minimal comes to mind. Out of frustration I've turned it off and tried to use it as a standard saw but the blade is too short to be useful. I take it off the shelf every once in a while thinking it can't be as bad as I remember... it is. Each time I've tried it I end up thinking it would be faster to just bludgeon the piece I'm trying to cut but, unfortunately, it's light weight makes it fairly useless as a hammer.

I tried to slip it into a friend's truck after he helped me build a deck. He found it, uttered a few choice words, and threw it back. When a guy turns down a free power tool, that's saying something.

Can't think of one redeeming feature of this tool. I give it one star because zero isn't an option.

Buy something useful with your money like a pet rock.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a decent little saw!
I just bought this saw for an incredible price at a day-after-Thanksgiving sale (Menards). In fact, the $19.50 I paid is 1/2 the normal price in the local hardware stores. As for the saw's performance, I have some mixed feelings.

My motivation for buying this saw (other than the incredible price) was to use it with various blades to cut 4" pvc pipe, tree limbs, etc. instead of using handsaws. It does all of this fairly well, but it would perform much better if B&D came out with a wider assortment of blades. At just 3.4 amps, this saw is not overly well powered and thus it should have an assortment of blades available so as to maximize the efficiency of the cutting action. For instance, the wide woodcutting blade has teeth that are fairly fine - which is good for precise cuts in material such as pvc pipe and lumber, but not so good when cutting tree limbs or any other situation where you want an agressive cut. All I got with the saw was a wide woodcutting blade (the blade that is normally pictured in the saw) and a narrow blade to use for cutting metal pipe. In my opinion B&D needs to come up with some more blades!

Having said all of that, I really like the ingenious design of this saw. The gel grips are great for preventing hand fatigue. Although I will probably never have a need to "convert" this saw to its jigsaw configuration - I have much better jigsaws for that - I think that this feature might be handy to the novice weekend warriors out there.

If you can find this saw at a bargain price I recommend it as worth the money!

We popped this out of the box, snapped it together, strapped iton, and were ready to move some leaves. What a delight this littlemachine is for cleaning up debris in the yard. It's lighter than thebackpacks kids are hauling to school these days, the shoulder strap iscomfortable, adjustable, and distributes the weight evenly, and theFlexTube is a great innovation that takes the strain off your arm andshoulder. Black & Decker crafted a joystick handle onto the FlexTube, letting you direct the 140 mph airflow with absolute ease. You can alsotake off the FlexTube and carry the tool by the handle to use it as atraditional blower--but the strap and FlexTube are so cool that wecan't imagine using it any other way. Another nice plus--it's quieterthan you'd expect for this much power. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes a beating and keeps on sanding!
I've had this sander for more than 15 years! I sanded everything from cars to sheetrock! I can't count the times I've dropped it, and it still worked. The felt pad has worn completely off to the base. I just placed an order for a new one for $25.00 it's not worth fixing it, or maybe if I make the time to find the parts. All around sander, light weight no frills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, noisy and vibrating too much sander.
I had this sander for three years but I have not used it much as there was not much need for it. Lately, I purchased Porter Cable palm sander, which I liked to use a lot. For comparison I used Black and Decker. Wow, B&D is very noisy, vibrates so much that it is basically killing my hands. My hands were ticklingafter few minutes of usage. I paid 20 USDfor B&D sander compared to 45 USD for Porter Cable one. In my opinion 25 USDinvestment in PC is a better choice. B&D will be retired after not much use at all. Surely it does the job but discomfort and noise make this sander not worth buying it even for twenty bucks.

I also purchased random-orbit sander from Porter Cable (I cannot recommend it though - see my other review) and it is heavier than palm sander, less vibrating, quiter etc. It is a pleasure to use random-orbit sander (sanding ceilings is tough due to its weight). If you can live with more expensive sanding discs, I would recommend 8 hole random-orbit sander.

Reviewer above mentionned that he had his B&D sander for 15 years. Maybe so but he paid probably more than it costs now meaning that it had better quality components than today's model. The drop in price is not magic but usually means that manufacturer was able to cut some corners by putting inferior components or by cutting labor expenses (China instead of USA).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best at this price point
I've had this sander for so long I can't remember when I bought it (must have been late 80's).While it's still going it needs a new rubber pad and bearing, so for me it's just going to be cheaper to get a new one.I've never had a problem with the paper releases as someone else mentioned, nor do I think it rips the sandpaper all that often. Most of the time when a paper rips a hole it's because I've tried to go over a sharp edge.It would be nice to have a variable speed, but I've lived without it this long...

Very reliable and dependable tool. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Don't think you're man or woman enough to handle a piece of power equipment? Fear no more. Black & Decker's bump feed string trimmer is a great buy for even the beginning gardener who needs to whack weeds regularly. Its 3-1/2 amp motor munches medium-to-thick weeds with precision and ease, even when weeds are a tangled web. The 12-inch cutting path and 10,000 rpm get the job done fast. This Black & Decker is easy to maneuver and can be used to trim weeds in some hard-to-reach places where other trimmers fail. It will also challenge thicker weeds, but watch out for vines, which can get tangled up above the cutting spool. To feed the spool, simply tap the trimmer against the ground.

Black & Decker definitely keeps the consumer in mind by providing comfort with an adjustable, textured top handle for firm gripping and maximum control. This string trimmer is not too heavy, either; weighing about 5 pounds, it's a good fit, even for smaller gardeners. You may start to feel a light vibration in your hands after a long trimming job, but it's minimal. This Black & Decker model can be used regularly and doubles as an edger. The Groom 'n' Edge button rotates the trimmer head 180 degrees to convert the trimmer to an edger and back again. In seconds, you can turn the head, and you'll hear the snap when it's in place. An edge guide provides precise trimming and edging around sidewalks and driveways and does a good job of keeping you at a safe distance from rocks or even the side of your deck or house.

This string trimmer, as well as most other electric trimmers, is best suited for small yards that are accessible with extension cords. Because electric trimmers are generally lighter and more comfortable, they are easy to handle. If you're looking to whack unruly weeds on your otherwise well-maintained yard, this electric trimmer is a less-powerful yet long-lasting alternative to more expensive gas-powered trimmers. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating any trimmer. A 30-day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full two-year warranty are included. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars B&D in for the sale...not for customer service
B&D will not provide instructions on-line for rewinding the spool. They will only tell you how to buy new spools.Their own spools have a "REWIND LINE" directional arrow...but this is a single line spool and they don't tell you which of the four holes or two anchor notches to use, or the manner in which to secure the line.

Can't call them...they work bankers hours Mon-Fri...useless for the average weekend warrior.I certainly don't do yardwork in the middle of the workday.Nor would my employer appreciate my use of the phone for weed whacking advice.

I am forced to go to the local hardware store and buy a new spool and do the detective work myself. This seems a bit selfish of B&D. ..withholding the information just so they can sell new spools.

Also, after three uses, the string guard broke off. Now, there is nothing to keep the proper distance from walls, shrubs, trees, etc.So the string breaks faster. But at least B&D will sell you a new spool!

Recommendation:tell B&D to post a manual on-line, and give honest information to customers.Otherwise, I'll spend the extra money to buy a brand that cares about customer service more than the upsell.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wimpy and torquey all at the same time......
Wimpy and torquey all at the same time......It has a alot of torque to do most average drilling jobs....Just don't use it for anything or it might break......I dropped mine from a foot off the ground...The back split wide open.....So I bought another identical drill......Within 6 months of use, the bit shaft warped and now the drill looks like a bent axle when driving screws......This makes it somewhat difficult to drive drywall screws. Hmmmmm....so yeah, it's a great drill as long as ya adon't use it...........

1-0 out of 5 stars Chuck does not hold a bit
Stay away!! Spend your cash on something that will last.

I have had this drill for almost a year for general use (not commerical) and at first was very pleased with it. After about 10 months bits began slipping in the chuck. At times I would need to remove bit from the chuck and back out with pliers.

Drill is good for screws, but will not set screws flush with surface unless counter set and screw holes are predrilled and using a fresh battery. Major, major inconvenice.I have to use my old craftman corded drill that has more torque to set screws.

The radio is great but if the drill does not live up to expectations it becomes expensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine drill/driver and under $100.00
I've read some reviews that sat the chuck on the drill can't hold a bit at all and its only real use is as an 18-volt screwdriver. I've run a 1/2 bit to the hilt into a 4X4 several times just to test it, and there was no slippage at all. The drill and two batteries that come with this set are worth the $99.00 and the radio/trickle charger is an added bonus. I would say that 280 lbs of torque is plenty for most applications, but have to admit that I am a novice and use it as a household tool. I've only had it about a month but have played around with it, and am very impressed with it when compared to other 18 volt drill/drivers out there. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly calibrated mistake
This saw is not accurately calibrated. For example a 90 degree setting does not produce a 90 degree cut.I can forgive that and use a square or another tool to set measurements; however, this saw cannot produce a 90 degree cut, maybe 87 degrees at best.I regret wasting my money on this and will give it away to a goodwill store. I can't, in good conscience, sell it to anyone else.Black and Decker shouldn't sell anything that it can't be proud of and no one can be proud of this mistake.

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I've had this saw for 1 year now. So far I found it helpful. I guess the real stress test came when building a deck out of composite lumber. After trimming off boards I noticed that the composite lumber saw dust clogged up the saw and the blade got literally stuck. After this incident I noticed that I can not make 90 degree cut any longer (which is extremely annoying).

I am now looking for another saw that is a) more powerful (15Amps) and b) that cuts 90 degrees.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight & Powerful
This circular saw makes projects so much easier. Before I purchased this, I was using a jigsaw for all my woodworking projects. Now that I have this saw, I don't dread having to cut long pieces of wood. It's lightweight yet very powerful. The front and rear assist handles make it easy to hold. This is a great saw. ... Editorial Review

Ever find yourself in a situation where a hand tool is not enough, but a full-size power tool is too much? Black & Decker's cordless grass shear is just what you need for detail work around flower beds, trees, fences, retaining walls--you name it. Modeled along the lines of sheep-shearing clippers, the quiet buzzing of this little machine will give your grass a safe trim without knocking down your prized petunias. We found it to be especially useful in small, delicate, or difficult-to-reach areas, such as around bushes, vines, and ornamental grasses. Note that this model was not designed for large or lengthy jobs: the battery charge lasts only up to 35 minutes, and the 3-inch shearing blades will not cover ground as efficiently as the spinning line of a string trimmer. Although the unit is extremely lightweight and easy to maneuver, it does require that you keep the trigger pressed to engage the blades, which can cause hand fatigue after about 15 minutes of constant use. A safety latch prevents accidental start-up. --Michelle McSweeney ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless Toy
These shears are way too feeble for any serious use. They cut the tender tips of the grass fine, but when it comes to the beefier, possibly wet, root area, they totally fail. The overload shutoff kicks in every 5 seconds, making them totally unusable for me. I tried to trim the overgrown edge of my lawn and I gave up after 6 feet. If you are a serious gardener and want a strong, reliable tool that does its job, this is not for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
I have used the clippers for many years and I want to replace the batteries. I have a GS300 clipper not the GS500 and would like to be able to order batteries to replace the ones that no longer will take a charge. How may I order new bateries for the GS300 grass clipper? Thank you, WL Bourgeois

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I can't say that this is the best grass shear made.
When fully charged, it will run for about 30-45
minutes before the charge is lost.It takes quite
a long time to charge this baby up.

The quality on the handheld unit it pretty good. The
long-handle accessory is just fine also.I don't like
the way they both connector together.Seems like it could
be trouble over time.

We have a yard that is close to 3/4 of an acre, with lots
of flower beds, trees, and things to trim around. Honestly
this is not the unit for us, but my wife wanted a rechargeable,
and there are not many out there.

It works. It gets the job done if you are patient. But there
could be improvements made.

To get 5 stars, the battery life should be longer, quicker
to recharge, and the connector for the long handle should be
more secure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice for the budget minded DIY'er
This jigsaw has a few features you don't normally find on jigsaws in this price range, like:
1. A powerful / quiet motor.
2. Tool-less fully adjustable foot for bevel cuts. Adjusts up to 45 degreesin both directions (But no degree markings.)
3. A variable speed trigger that really works.
4. You can attach to a vacuum and catch most sawdust.
5. "Sightline" cutting guide helps you stay on course.
6. On board blade storage (Holds 3 blades.)
7. Tool-less blade change.
This saw does not have "orbital action."If you want that feature you have to step up to the next model.
So far, I am very pleased with the price, ease of use, performance and features of this jigsaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker BA-075 Side Bag Assembly
I found the Side Bag Assembly easy to use and liked it because it was small, and light weight. Plus, it waseasy to dispose of the grass clippings in my waste bag I kept close by.Great for the female species.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, but too small
This side bag assembly is really a nice addition to my B&D BA-075 lawn mower. With the bag, I oftentime have a hard time mowing tall grass because of the massive mulch accumlated under the mower. With the bag, that is no longer an issue. However, the bag is way too small. For my small backyard, I had to empty the bag over 10 times. Also, it keep falling off the mower. The clips just doesn't seem to hold onto the mower that well.Having it on the right side of the mower also made the it mowing certain part of the lawn a bit difficult due to the fence, tree, or other obstacles.I can only mow one direction with the bag attached.

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad
I like this side bag assembly well enough. It's easy to attach to my B & D electric lawnmower. However the bag is very small.Even with my small yard I can only make one or two passes before the bag is full. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Leave no hedge untrimmed: The 24-inch Hedge Hog eats up branches up to 3/4-inch thick without blinking. The dual-action blades work smoothly and quickly with less vibration, further dampened by the full-sized, three-sided soft-grip comfort handle. A lock-on switch prevents trigger-finger fatigue, and the lock-off eliminates accidental starting. Electric power is environmentally friendly and quieter, too, plus it’s always ready when you are. The super long reach of the 24-inch dual blades is a nice switch from shorter varieties, meaning less dangerous reaching for the user. No assembly is needed: Open the box, plug it in, and trim.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great trimmer, good balance, great price
This makes simple work of any hedge. The balance is good, so it's easy on the shoulders, elbows and wrists. The balanced handle is padded so you can handle it with no stress points. You can hold the trigger down or engage a lock to keep it trimming, his is very good on stopping on fatigue.Very little vibration.Trims through branches that usually require lopping-shears.The longer reach also prevents you from trying to over extend.

Well designed, worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts thick woody bushes like they were butter!
I bought the B&D HS2400 electric hedge trimmer after a fiasco with B&D's CHT500 cordless trimmer. (See my review of it.) It's already assembled, so there's nothing more to do besides remove it from the box and plug it in.

The handle is comfortable and easy to hold both horizontally and vertically. Its good balance makes it very easy to handle. The trigger is large and easy to depress. The lock is a bit difficult to engage, and I find it easier to just hold the trigger down.

But, this trimmer really shines when it comes to cutting. I have about 100 feet of honeysuckle bushes that grow to be about eight feet tall every year. They're incredibly woody and difficult for smaller trimmers to cut. The first thing I did with the HS2400 was to sweep it across the honeysuckles about five feet off the ground. It cut through them like butter. The dual-action blades virtually eliminate vibration, and I easily guided the trimmer through the bushes. The 24" blade reduces the amount of time you spend trimming as well as helping you make a straighter cut. The trimmer worked equally well on the front sides. I cut through those bushes faster than my kids could stack the branches. My wife was cutting the front sides with our old B&D 16" trimmer and it was faster for me to just do the whole thing with the HS2400.

Black & Decker states that the trimmer can cut up to 3/4" branches, and it does that with ease. Most trimmers struggle when they reach their maximum capacity, but the HS2400 just lops them right off. If you don't hold the trimmer steady, a few branches might be a bit ragged at the ends, but it's easy to trim them again to clean up the edge.

The hook that holds the extension cord to prevent it from being yanked out of the pigtail is a bit small and the opening a bit tight. I'd like a slightly larger opening and a larger hook, but it holds the cord. In about three hours of use, it only fell out once. It would be easy enough to use a small PVC cable tie or rubber band to improvise a different way of securing it, but I don't think it's worth the effort.

Please keep the extension cord in mind when using an electric trimmer. Buy a bright orange or yellow cord. In my opinion, despite their neon color, the bright green ones are less noticeable in bushes and grass. Also, buy twice as much cord as you think you'll need. You want to have about fifteen feet of cord next to you, and patio furniture, trees, and other obstacles inevitably reduce the amount you have available. Spending an extra two dollars for another fifty feet will ensure that you don't have to worry about your extension cord. Plus, you'll be especially glad of the extra length if you have to trim the other side of a hedge. Trust me--my old fifty foot cord has two sets of electrical tape where my old trimmer bit through it because it was too difficult to manage a shorter cord.

Update: I finished the hedges today and, although I was careful not to hit my chain link fence, I didn't notice a bean plant holder. The trimmer doesn't cut through 1/8" steel rod. In fact, it torqued one of the teeth so badly that the blade is ruined. My fault. I'll see if it can be repaired cheaply enough, but if it can't, I'll buy another one. That's how much I like this trimmer.

HS2400 summary:
Cuts incredibly well, even 3/4" woody branches (but not steel)
You rarely need multiple passes.
Well-designed and balanced.
Easy to maneuver. No vibration.
Comfortable handles and easy to use horizontally and vertically.
No vinyl blade sheath (unlike the CHT500--why?).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Electric Hedge Trimmer
Like the other reviewer, I am exclusive to electric garden tools. This Hedge Hog is the longest and most powerful hedge trimmer made and it is by far my favorite tool.It makes light work of most shrubs and really allows for precise sculpting of shrubs.I have even used it to chop up branches in my compost bin, which it was able to do with aplomb. The controls are safe, and I find that tying the extension cord a second time around the handle leaves it secure.(The danger with the extension cord becoming unplugged is if the tool is locked "on" when you plug it back in.)

My only complaints are that this Hedge Hog is slightly heavy and I wish that it were 36" long when I'm trimming bigger hedges.Nevertheless, this is so far the biggest size they make.I would buy it again and again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER EVER BUY THIS OR ANY OTHER!!!
THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT OUT OF THE BOX(THE FIRST ONE)I WAS SO EXCITED! IT HAD A RUBBER COATING ON, NO MORE BLISTERS. THEN I TOOK IT TO WORK CAUSE I HAVE "AMERICAN LAWN SERVICES" AND AT FIRST IT WORKED GREAT THEN I DECIDED TO DO MY LAWN. BAD PURCHASE AS I STARTED THE AUTO MATIC SPOOL FEED STOPED FEEDING THE LINE WASN'T EVEN STUCK SO EACH TIME THE LINE RAN DOWN I HAD TO TURN IT OVER A MANUALY DO THE FEEDING MYSELF ! BY THE TIME I WAS DONE IT TOOK ME TWICE THE TIME IT TOOK A POULAN WEED EATER. BUT THAT GAVE AFTER NINE MONTHS OF SERVICE! THE DOWNGRADE I PURCHASE IN EXCHANGE WAS JUST AS BAD!!! IF YOU LIKE FLIPPING IT OVER JUST TO GET LINE DONT BUY THESE OR TRUST ME YOUR HANDS WILL HURT WHEN YOUR DONE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Novice /New Property Owner
I bought this trimmer/edger as well as a B&D blower and hedge trimmer all in one day. I couldn't ask for more for a mere $40.00 ($30.00 after rebate). It is lightweight and easy to change from trimmer to edger. I have never mowed, trimmed or edged a lawn before so having a tool this easy to use is great! It does appear to use alot of string but I was also doing some heavy edging to an unkept lawn. I don't anticipate this to be the case with normal use. Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars Line Hog
I bought this trimmer/edger thinking how great it would be to just trim with the auto-feed feature.I have had the most difficult time with this trimmer.I used over 75 feet of line in an area smaller than 250 sq. ft. of mainly grass and some weeds. After using the spool that came with it which lasted 10 minutes, I constantly had to stop to re-wind the spool (yes, I read the directions and did it properly - 5 times). It continuously cut off pieces of line and threw them close to 100 ft. through the air. This is not safe in a California neighborhood.I would not recommend this trimmer unless you like fiddling with your trimmer. ... Editorial Review

Quiet, lightweight, convenient, clean: Black & Decker’s built a great mower for the homeowner. The electric 9-amp motor is plenty powerful for the average homeowner’s yard without the hassle of pull-cord starting, no mixing gas and oil, never running out of fuel, no smelly fumes and no pollution. Because it’s so light (just 39 pounds), even the least brawny homeowner can handle this cutter without trouble. Another nice feature is the one-touch lever that raises and lowers all four wheels at once from 1 inch to 3-1/2 inches, saving the trouble of adjusting each wheel’s height. Assembly is minimal. It’s a great mulcher, but if you prefer to bag, you can add the side bag attachment that’s sold separately.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Lightweight at only 39 pounds
  • Electric 9-amp motor means no gas, no oil, no pull-starts
  • Single lever height adjustment form 1" to 3-1/2"
  • Mulch, side-discharge, or optional side bag (BA-075)
  • 18-inch cutting deck, made of super tough polymer, is guaranteed for life

4-0 out of 5 stars Good cutter if you can deal with the cable dance
Actually the mower itself gets 5 points but i was not used to electric mowers, so i gave 4 because of the little inconvenience with the cable. Dealing with cable seemed more of a work than actual mowing in my small end unit townhome lawn. This is very light weight, so you dont feel like putting effort into it while mowing, even when it does not self drive which is case of some gas powered mowers. I cut almost 8 inch grass to 3 inch without any problem. I never tried when wet, but dry grass even taller grass seemed no problem at all for this mower. I would really suggest this mower ifyou are aware of how to deal with the cable when mowing. May be small length cables are good if you have multiple outlets with in reach.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tony
This mower has a few significant design flaws. The on-switch is a pinch hazzard. When my old electric mower died after 20 years, I ordered this one. In the MM275's first use, my right palm was pinched at least 4 or 5 times by the dead-man's switch lever (and I was never pinched by my old one). The lever is just too small and cheap, but is the perfect size to provide pretty healthy pinches. The handle doesn't fold, so moving it in and out of the basement is cumbersome. And, the front edge of the mower is at least 6 inches away from the blade, making it impossible to cut close to anything in front of the mower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will never go back to a gas mower
I bought this in the Spring of 2004 and have used it all summer.I am very pleased and will never go back to a gas mower. It is so easy to use, even easy to mow the steep slope in front of my house. It mulches terrific without a trace.I have mowed wet grass with it and high grass and it keeps going strong. With the two year warranty, I can rest assured that even if something goes wrong next summer, I will still have a great mower another year.Next time I might try a cordless model as I have very small trees and some shrubs in the yard and the cord can occasionally run into those if I am not paying close enough attention.I highly recommend this delightful little mower. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Should be called "Cordless Screwdriver"
For a 12V drill, it certainly lacks sufficient power for common drilling tasks. With the clutch torqued all the way down, the drill choked trying to bore out a 2 1/8" hole through a hollow-core door. After five minutes of backing the bit out and back in, the chuck started slipping, rendering it useless.A two-minute job eventually took 20 minutes. It works great as a screwdriver, though.A bright orange, $70 screwdriver. For people installing bookshelves and hanging pictures, it's a fine tool, but for serious users, go buy a Milwaukee.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clutch failed
I've had one of these for about 2 years. It has performed well so far, but all at once the clutch--or whatever that thing is that allows adjusting the torque it delivers--has just quit. Now it won't turn a flea. So, I've got two excellent battery packs but a drill that is worthless.I took it apart and tried to tighten the spring against the little balls which apparently activate the clutch, but it didn't help at all.I'd be very cautious, though I am thinking of trying to get another just so that I can still use the battery packs I have.

1-0 out of 5 stars drill bit slippage galore
this thing couldn't hold a drill bit if it's life depended on it.it's been relegated to driving screws with the hex head. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great drill..but the othermodel is better
I actually was going to buy this drill with the gel stuff, but I looked down the shelf at walmart and found the same drill with no gel, and an extra battery for the same price. Its a winner no doubt, but I must agree the case is pathetic.I took a dremel to the case and now its all good, but I shouldn't have had to do that...

4-0 out of 5 stars very handy, good torque, good features...
I bought one of these to replace an old cordless I'd busted. After buying a cheaper cordless drill with totally weenie torque and returning it, I found this drill on sale and went with it.
It's been a few months and I have used it alot. The removable drill bit thingie with a driver bit underneath is amazingly handy to use...just drill, pop off the thingie, grab a screw and put it in the hole without removing and replacing the bits each time. The torque is fantastic and the grip is comfortable. The only reasons I gave only 4 stars is because the plastic case it comes in is pathetic...no place to put bits or anything except the drill w/ charger. And having an extra battery would be smart for any drill or cordless tool that gets alot of use, but they didn't include a second battery...but you (and I) can get one here at Amazon.com ...45 bucks a piece...ow.
But I love the drill, it's worth it and I'm getting an extra battery because I use it so much...
If you're looking for a great cordless drill that isn't too expensive...get this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Performance and Good Value
I owned a 10 year old Black and Decker 1/4 sheet palm sander that was very loud, very dusty, and very prone to vibration.I mainly only use my belt sander and random orbital sander anyway, but there are those times when a 1/4 sheet sander is still the best tool for the job.So, I bought this unit as a replacement.First I will start with the good stuff:

1.This sander is a bit quieter than my old one, but not much.

2.The gel-grip design on this sander is fantastic - no more tingly hands after sanding for a long time.

3.The dust collection works decently, and is of course a vast improvement for me since my old sander had no dust collection.

4.It is very affordable!

I guess what I am saying is that for what it is, this is not a bad sander at all.

Now for the few drawbacks...

1.This sander came with a separate plastic jig to use for punching the dust collecting holes into your sandpaper.I really wish there were another way to accomplish this since the jig never seems to be handy and/or where the sander is.

2.Although it IS quieter than my last palm sander, this thing is still uncomfortably loud.

3.The on/off switch is located in a perfect spot, but I wish it were not so recessed.Sometimes I have to fiddle around trying to get the thing on or off.

Overall, I am pleased with the quality of this tool. There are of course nicer sanders on the market but for the price this one cannot be beat! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cordless Drill Mania survivor
Ok Ok , I admit it...I was a cordless drill junkie. At first it was the 12v high, then the 18v rush!!!!

Well, all went well until that dreaded day when the batteries wouldn't hold a charge anymore. That day when I came to gripes (yes , gripes) with forking out $60 to $85 for batteries that also had poor lifetimes written all over them. Let's face it, the drill gets used maybe once a month and spends the rest of the time being charged with the usual "delta V" or , in the cheaper models, "V threshold" charge techniques. The NiCad batteries just sit there, essentially being topped off when the charge declines. This does not make for a long lifetime for this battery chemistry. (those drills are in a box with their dead batteries...too expensive to throw away!!).

That being said, the VPD850 offers a good quality, medium dutydrill that uses inexpensive 3.6v NiCad batteries ($15) that can be used in other BD products. I have found that practically all my heavy work can easily be done using a corded drill (yes, CORDED) with the VPD850 handling the lighter jobs. This is a surprisingly well-designed, good torque 7.2v drill with its only problem being that you can't find it anywhere! I was both amazed and pleased that Amazon markets this. I have looked everywhere. It has plenty of torque and charge for a wide variety of household jobs. Admit guys... do you REALLY need a high-powered cordless drill? Their starting torque is a fraction of a corded drill. And if you do buy a corded drill...don't skimp. My Milwaukee Magnum Hole Shooter has been thru many big jobs and runs like new.
