Editorial Review

This is one of the handiest power tools we’ve seen. With a variety of bits and cutters, there’s very little it won’t do. We like this model’s removable handle for getting into tight spots, and its dust blower really keeps the cut line clear. The extra-large base offers superior stability, and the angled handle gives you great control and comfort. A wide range of accessories are available, but it also takes ¼-inch router bits, turning this versatile tool into a router, too. Crafters, woodworkers, do-it-yourselfers and homeowners ought to tuck one of these in their toolboxes. Women especially will appreciate its small grip.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Editorial Review

Every home enthusiast needs a reliable trimmer. When it comes to performance in the front yard or back, the Black & Decker GH600 14-inch Grass Hog lives up to its name. The unit is powered by a 4.8 amp electric motor that spins the line at 9,500 rpm. An automatic line feed system eliminates the need to bump the trimmer against the ground every time the line breaks. And the 30-foot, factory-wound spool is easy to install and replace. Head adjustment is quick and easy, too. Just press the button, rotate the handle and wait for it to lock in place. The Grass Hog comes equipped with an auxiliary handle for added comfort and control. The handle rotates a full 360 degrees and can be moved up and down the handle to ensure the perfect fit, whatever size the operator may be. A flip-down edge guide ensures precise trimming and edging work. And, at just 5.2 pounds, the Grass Hog is easy for just about anyone to use.--Carl Thress ... Read more

  • Soft grips for maximum comfort
  • Automatic line advancement -- no bumping required

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2Under Specific Conditions Only
I've read the other reviews here after I bought this--read before you buy. On the bright side, the hog has not broken and I've had no problems with the feeder. I haven't used it enough to test how long the cutting string lasts.I'll need to use this more to see if it develops some or all of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. However, there are OTHER limitations to this machine.

This powerful tool cuts in 14-inch swathes at a time. It is not very precise because of the weight and size of the cutting path. I found the cutting guide (a piece of metal that hangs down from the tool) of limited use. As a result, I accidentally tore up part of a wooden edging that separates the lawn from an adjacent mulched area with plants.Another problem is that there is nothing to catch the flying grass and it wound up on the same mulched area. It looked awful, and I found myself picking up leaves of grass (though I was NOT in a Whitmanesque mood by this time) one by one. So much for saving time. The only thing that might help in the future is to lay a sheet over the mulched area adjacent to the lawn to catch the cuttings, and move the sheet as I go along. Perhaps this should come with a sheet? This is also a fairly noisy machine and takes up a fair amount of vertical storage.

I can recommend this if you want to go all out with your energy consumption and then use a grass blower to get rid of the cuttings. I don't have one of these, and it's possible that this would also blow away the wood chips (mulch) as well.Ideally, you have a huge lawn (thus justifying the 14 inch cutting path) that borders on cement. The cuttings fly either onto the lawn or on the cement, and you or the wind can blow it away. One nice thing is that you can rotate the handle so that the machine can trim lawn under protruding bushes or around rocks, etc.Because of the power of the machine, it will take some practice to maneuver it without so that only the lawn is cut. Another advantage is that, unlike other edgers, you don't need to "bump" the machine (literally lighting hitting it against the lawn) to advance the cutting wire. This was the main reason I bought this machine over smaller ones that probably would have been more suitable.

Although it's an impressive looking yard tool, I don't generally recommend it except under the conditions noted above. If you have a small enough yard, use some grass shears for edging. It'll probably take about as much time, you'll save money, and you have much better control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I bought this at Lowe's and enjoy it on my 1/2 acre. I never had one before but knew I didn't want a gas trimmer for noise and having to yank on a string like a mower. I find the noise level acceptable. True I keep at least one roll of string on hand since I use this to clean out the open ditch in front of my house. But so easy to replace (just pop out the old and in with the new) I can't complain. And long pants are a MUST. One stinging gash will speak volumes to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars good trimmer for what I paid
This is my first trimmer so I couldn't compare it with other models. For the money I paid ($20 +tax, no shipping) it's a good deal. The Black&Decker replacement spool is quite expensive though. I had it for 8 months now and no problems at all. I just switched to "generic" line (7x cheaper) and it still works great. I do mostly edging but the lot is small; I'd say light "duty cycle". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good as detail sander
I got this because it has a diamond-shaped foot that extends ~2" in front of the body, for access to some narrow spaces. It works well for this purpose, though it's not the best choice for a general purpose sander. The foot uses hook and loop sandpaper, I just cut out the diamond shapes rather than buying the pre-cut ones. ... Editorial Review

Cordless convenience is what you'll find with the three-in-one Black & Decker MT1203K-2 12-volt multitool kit. Powered by a rechargeable 12-volt battery pack, the multitool offers three tools--a drill/driver, jig saw, and sander/polisher--in one powerful unit. To change applications, simply switch out one attachment for the next. It's that easy. With the multitool, you don't have to compromise performance for convenience--the tool delivers both, no matter which attachment you use. The drill/driver, for example, offers variable speeds of 0 to 700 rpm, a keyless chuck, an electric brake, and 24 preset torque positions. The jig saw operates at 0 to 3,000 spm and features, among other things, tool-free blade changing, a blade support roller, and a 45-degree bevel for just the right cut. The sander/polisher spins at 0 to 8,000 opm and is compatible with all the attachments and accessories that go with Black & Decker's popular Mouse sander. The whole thing comes housed in an impact-resistant, molded-plastic storage case that can go anywhere with you. --Carl Thress ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Old-Tech
As you can see, the other reviews date all the way back to 2000, which tells you that this product was designed a long time ago compared to other cordless tools and batteries available today. This set was, in it's prime, pretty good.I bought it for my mom for Xmas 2001 (which has only been used a couple of times,) and bought one for myself (to replace my Ryobi 12v) a year later

One of my (2) batteries became very aenemic after a year, and the other one's pretty much shot now.For light household use, the driver's pretty much average for a 12v, but the saw and sander eat up the poor capacity NiCD's pretty quick. Forget about replacing the batteries, too, since they are the same capacity as the originals, and about $50 a pop!I may share in some of the blame for the relatively short life of the batteries, because the charger has no trickle or shut-off feature, and who can remmber to remove them from the charger in a timely fashion every time?

I saw a MUCH newer B

4-0 out of 5 stars Fouryears of good light to medium duty jobs
I've owned the Multi-tool for four years, and recently had to replace one of the original batteries. A single battery will last most of the day drilling dry wall srews or wood screws. The Saw will cut 1/2 inche ply-wood and the batteries lasted about an hour each doing so. Recently we've added a room to the back of the house 19'X10' and again the driver did a fine job. Now we are gutting out a closet a bathroom and laundry area and combing them into one large bathroom and again one fully charged battery will last most of the day driving screws. I can't say much about the sander, but the noise level is not an issue. The B&D 12volt Multi-Tool is no louder than any other 12 or 14.4 cordless drill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Show But No Go
This multi-tool set is really pretty, but it is all show and no go. The tools are so heavy and clunky that they are difficult to use.The jig saw has an extra button on the power head that makes it very difficult to use.You actually have to push a button with both hands to get it to work. All of the tools are very noisy and require ear protection to use.The batteries have a very short life and a very long charging time.If you accidentally leave them on the charger it will distroy them. I bought this set for my son for Christmas, but the little elves that built it were obviously not tool makers.I'm sending the whole mess back. No more Black and Decker for me! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars So disappointed
Amazon has so monopolized the online buying market that the only way to get a $20 replacement blade is to buy one for $31 from the "black" market.

These guys just cancelled my order today after waiting for 3 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saves a lot of work
Save money by giving the edge a few swipes with a 4" high-speed grinder - wear leather gloves and goggles, and do it in five minutes with the blade installed (but BE SURE TO UNPLUG THE MOWER and WATCH OUT FOR GRINDING SPARKS). Three to five regrindings and you've paid for the grinder.
There's a reason these blades are not very hard-tempered: who wants a snapped blade flying out at 200+ miles-per-hour?

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
$15.99 is too much for this simple and small lawn mower blade but what can you do.Home Depot sells the mower but not the blade.Maybe somebody should give the management a drug test. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the perfect recip saw for the home do-it-yourselfer. It's priced attractively but doesn't skimp on the features. For the price, we're impressed with the 7.5 amp motor and variable speed, all the way from 0 to 2,400 strokes per minute--plenty for whatever your project needs. Also high on our list is the fact that it weighs only 6.8 pounds. If you've ever hefted one of the higher-end models, you'll appreciate the light weight, especially noticeable when you're cutting over your head and in other awkward positions. You'll really be pleased with the tool-free blade-change system; it's fast, easy and foolproof. When you're cutting, you'll notice that the ergonomic rubber grip and the cushioning on the front boot really cut vibration and improve your control. We can imagine putting this baby to use doing cutouts in drywall and studs for things like inset cabinets, cutting PVC for all kinds of projects--pipes during renovations, subfloors, joists, framing in a new door--you get the picture. A recip saw is one of the more versatile tools to have in your collection, and this one's a great buy for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the weekend warrior
This is a rugged saw with enough power for most jobs. There are a couple of plain steel starter blades included although you'll need better for serious work.I bent the wood blade on my second cut. Now, I *was* cutting pressure-treated wood, which is metal insinuated into the cellulose fibers. But even the "manual" (just a single large sheet, with many folds) recommends using bimetal blades because of their superior durability.I picked up a couple for about 5 bucks total and got to work.

The included case is nice.Note that you'll have to remove the blade when stowing the saw; it won't fit otherwise. But you can transport the saw without worrying about snagging the cord or damaging something.

Nice for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love this saw...
First, I am a casual, around-the-house handyman, not a professional. So this saw is great for me. Not too expensive, but does everything I need it to.

Comes in a nice case, and I bought a couple of heavy duty blades at Home Depot for a project I needed to do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product Just don't misplace your charger
The other reviews pretty much cover this tool with one large exception.Make sure you never misplace your charger. The instruction manual gives no info at all on this vital part and Black and Decker's website is just as helpful. The part # is 5102293-09 if you need to buy a new one, but you won't find it listed at the website, or any info about it.

I will now continue my quest for some helpful description of this most valuable part.

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP SCREWING AROUND!
We've all been there. There's that teeny screw just under the sink...just under the counter...just out of reach behind the wall...positioned just so. All it needs is a turn or two.
But it's impossible to reach. Not anymore. This is undoubtedly the handiest screwdriver we've come across---a three-position cordless ditty made by Black & Decker. The 2.4-volt rechargeable screwdriver offers the advantages of a traditional screwdriver when in the in-line position; switch to the middle- or right-angled position, and the extended, narrow bit holder reaches those ... hard-to-reach places. That's just for
starters. There's also a spindle lock that offers greater control when starting or finishing screws, and allows for manual use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
This screwdriver is lightweight and easy to position in your hand. It's easy to recharge and goes along way on each charge.Switching from Phillips to Flathead is a breeze.I don't know how I ever got along without it! ... Read more

Great for the homeowner. Why spend three times as much for some other brand when this will do for most applications?Great product.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a piece of crap
Spend a few more bucks a buy a better drill. This drill broke within the first hour of use. The chuck disengaged as soon as it encountered any real resistance, making it impossible to drill anything. I used my drill just 2 times (10 minutes) as a hammer drill,
and is not working anymore...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth A Penny!
Dont waste your time with this drill.I used it for 2 days and realized that 1.) it wasn't capable of drilling into concrete, or hard surfaces with even the best bits and2.) the drill has a very weak motor, and began smoking after minimal usage.

Stay Away...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
After burning up my old hammer drill in the middle of a job I ran out and picked this one up, just to finish up.It barely scarred the outside of the cinder block I was going though when it began to smell, burning up already!I let it rest. When I used it again it just crapped out, the mechanism that sets it into hammer mode broke.I wasn't able to get though a single hole with this piece of junk.I took the masonry bit out, put it in my Dewalt drill (non-hammer) and finished up.I am a pro and do not abuse my tools, it would be too costly.I used this drill as it was supposedly designed to be used, and it failed terribly.I only gave it a star because it isn't terribly ugly. ... Editorial Review

What sets this trimmer apart from the pack is its clever AFS line-feed system. It automatically senses when more line is needed and feeds it in fractional increments without bumping through centrifugal force. The spool is surprisingly easy to replace, too. When you’re done trimming, convert the unit to an edger by rotating the Groom 'N' Edge head 180 degrees in just a few seconds.Unlike other trimmers, this one has an auxiliary handle that adjusts to the user’s height. A sturdy guard protects you from flying debris, a good thing because the motor keeps the string moving at 11,800 rpm. The flip-down edge guide makes edging a snap. The 12-volt battery will charge overnight in the wall-mount stand. Relatively light at 10 pounds, it’s a great dual-purpose tool for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Tool's Out for Summer
Purpose and General Instructions
This product is very useful if you have a small lawn that overruns its borders (use the edger) or that is too uneven or bumpy to cut effectively with a lawn mower (hence the trimmer). Because it runs on rechargeable internal batteries, you don't have to hook up an extension cord to use it. These tools generally work with a small spool (as on a fishing pole) wound about with plastic cutting line (thicker than fishing line) that whirls around and cuts the lawn. For some reason, many models require that you literally bump the end of the tool on the ground to advance the line as it wears down, but here the line advance automatically as you use it.B & D uses the "auto-feed" as a selling point; however, some people dislike the lack of control over advancing the cutting line.

Assembly
I had no problem putting it together, although the instructions are somewhat unclear because of the accompanying tiny picture. I had to look at the outside of the box to determine where to place the green plastic safety catcher. The catcher itself is a little bit tricky to set up, but after a few tries it went on.This alone should not discourage you from buying the product.

Power
A 12-volt battery initially requires a full 24-hour charge. This did the job, and it took only about an hour to recharge it for subsequent use.The manufacturers suggest that you permanently attach the recharger to a wall, and keep the trimmer/edger mounted on it, recharging, when not in use (There are no memory effects; therefore, you don't have to wait for the power to completely run down before recharging.)Given space limitations, and a reluctance to keep it plugged in at all times, I ignored this suggestion.

Field Test
Unlike other reviewers reporting here, I've had no problems with the "non-bump" autofeed.Since the lawn was fairly overgrown, there were thick clumps for the edger to cut--this load consumes more power. Hence, the tool began to lose substantial power after about 30-40 minutes of heavy use.Edging requires a light touch, and repeated paring back of the overgrown areas. The metal guide is somewhat useful, but it's more effective to look at the results and continue or modify the placement and/or angle of the cutting assembly. As I have used these before, I can attest practice produces better results. Additionally, edging should be easier now that I've trimmed back the worst areas.

The trimmer is much easier to use because you immediately see the results. The trimmer (converted from the edger by rotation-a very easy task) cuts through relatively thick suburban blades, trims ivy, and can go under overhanging roses that a lawnmower can't reach. It also quickly spot-cuts areas that one's lawnmower (I have a non-power reel mower) leaves behind. Overall, it's a better trimmer than edger, but I'm sufficiently satisfied with both functions, especially after clearing away the really overgrown areas.

Safety
The machine won't work without depressing a safety button. This puts a strain on your finger, and you may have to rest it after a few minutes use. There's probably a way to rig this so that the button is always pressed down, but that would ruin any chance of suing the company should anything untoward ever happen.

Disadvantages
The primary disadvantage is the weight of the tool, weight that you hold at a distance from your body, thus creating more of a strain. I found that between my finger holding down the safety and the tool straining my back, I had to take breaks after every 10 minutes or so.There are lighter electric models.Amazon.com used to sell a 9 inch (plenty of width, by the way) corded model by this company which felt substantially lighter, but these have become increasingly more difficult to find. One other disadvantage is the cost of the replacement cutting spools.

Advantages
I find that not having to hook up a long extension cord makes it much more likely that I will use the trimmer/edger.The tool saves much time and effort compared to using manual cutters, and it's cheaper and less polluting than gas-powered ones.If you have a small to medium size house lawn (not a large field), and you have a need for trimming or edging (either for aesthetics or to keep an overgrown lawn from rotting wooden borders around your lawn), and you feel the convenience for weight tradeoff is worth it, then I would recommend buying the trimmer/edger.It seems a bit expensive for what you get; try waiting for a sale if possible. Overall, this has proven itself a handy tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would buy it again!
The B&D Cordless Trimmer is a great addition to my lawn care collection. It did the edging around my 3bd 2ba house, my 70ft by 40ft yard, around the trees (2) , flower boxes (3 big ones) the drive way edging (30 feet long and grass on both sides) and along the curbs in front of my home which spanned about 50 feet in length. After all this (about an hour of continuous running) it was still fully capable of more! Even now that I have moved and have been in this house for three months with my trimmer completely unplugged, it still holds a charge good enough to start in .2 seconds with a push of a button! The only thing I wish was different about it is the fact that it only has one string and not two. This is something that is not important enough to me though and that is why, if given a choice, I would buy this product again. If this isn't good enough, it is as light or lighter than the lightest gas driven trimmers and there's no strings to pull to get it started, no smell, no gas to go bad...it's a clean operator. As a woman who does all her lawn care, I love mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I recently purchased this grass trimmer from Amazon.com.I wanted a cordless model so I did not have to bother with gas or lugging a plug around the yard.I received it very quickly and was able to pull it out of the box and have it ready for it's first charge in about 10 minutes.

I used it last night for the first time and was very happy with it.I needed it primarily to remove the grass/weed growth (that that our mower can't reach), that was climbing up the fence separating my and my neighbor's yards as well as the weeds that grow around our garage. It worked perfectly.I had some grass/weeds near the fences that was at least 12 inches in height and it blasted right through it.It never got stuck or jammed.I probably cleared about 150 -200 feet of fence that had grass and weeds climbing up.

I did try to use it on a section of dense pulpy weeds near a corner of our yard where the grass meets concrete. The weeds are very low to the ground and have very thick stems. It did not work so great on these but I think it is due to the thickness and density of the weed growth. I wound up just pulling them up out of the ground (this was even hard to do). But, since I bought it for purposes of removing the grass/growth along the fences on my property, it works wonderfully.

The only drawback is it does get heavy after using for a while, but the helper handle is a great plus.Since I don't need to use it for excessive lengths of time, that is something I can live with. I would recommend this trimmer. ... Read more
