Editorial Review

Bosch's Compact Tough cordless drills are designed to provide professional power in a compact profile and perform tough jobs in tight spaces and close quarters without compromising durability. Employing a flexible ABS nylon blend, this tool can stand up to the roughest job site conditions. This 14.4-volt model has a two-speed gearbox that delivers up to 300 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,200 rpm in high-speed mode. There's also a large two-sided fan for cool operation and motor durability and a 16-position clutch for matching the torque to your task. We like the ratcheting chuck that allows for quick, reliable one-handed bit changes and the soft rubber grip Bosch includes on all its cordless tools. For people who want the most power they can get in a small drill, this 14.4-volt model may be the best bet. It has the most torque of all Bosch's Compact Tough drills and weighs only 4.4 pounds. This model includes the drill, two 2 amp hr batteries, a one-hour charger, a bit holder, and a carrying case. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Bosch!
Why a company long famous for superior engineering in many fields markets this grossly overpriced cheesy attachment is beyond my understanding. I took the time to modify an equally versatile but distinctly superior ALL METAL Craftsman guide & pivot point accessory (INCLUDED FREE with a much cheaper Craftsman saw) rather than buy this junk.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for circle cutting
I do not use this as rip guide but it is great for circle cutting. Hard to read scale and yes the plastic is not the best material for a guide like this, but as a circle cutter it works.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just plain JUNK
While my Bosch 1587 is quality made and the Bosch saw blades are the best I have used, the optional JA1003 Cutting Guide is a [X] piece of junk. As soon as I got it I pulled the set point out of its holder and one of the cheap plastic lock pins broke. I could make one better than this one. Also its made in China not the US or Germany! Also the instructions are printed in pictures on the cardboard package. There are no written instructions to give the novice usefull hints. If I only paid [X] for it I would say I got what I paid for. My advice is to look for a quality after market cutting guide and stay away from the Bosch. ... Read more

The Bosch 1613AEVS is a reliable plunge router with a quiet2-1/4-horsepower motor that delivers a soft start, consistent performance, and variable speeds from 11,000 to 22,000 rpm. The tool also features anumber of creature comforts, including ergonomic handles, convenientcontrols, a smooth plunging action, and fast, precise bit-depthadjustments. Thanks to Bosch's Constant-Response Circuitry, the 1613AEVSalways maintains a constant rpm under load, even when running a bitthrough knotty stock. An easy-to-set knob with six presets controls therouter's speed, while an onboard chart lets you know how many rpm thetool is delivering at each level. And, as with other Bosch routers, the1613AEVS is designed to keep the bit perfectly centered in the routerbase to ensure more accurate cuts in templates and jigs. --CarlThress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Turned me into a Bosch loyalist
I did a lot of research prior to buying this and am glad I did.I've had it for over 2 years now and really love it.After using various power tools from Bosch, Makita, Porter Cable, Milwaukee, Dewalt, Ridgid, Craftsman, Skil, Black and Decker, and Ryobi...only the first 3 I mentioned are in my top tier of toolmakers I really trust to make a good tool. With Bosch in particular, I know the tool will be well engineered to meet users' needs for: 1) comfort, 2) precision, and 3) performance.

The 1/2" and 1/4" shank adapters help because it give more flexibility in buying bits. When possible, buy 1/2" shank bits to minimize the vibration.

The variable speed is essential to control the velocity of the actual router bit cutters -- which will vary based upon the diameter of the bit itself and the RPM speed selected.Hence, for bigger diameter bits, lower RPMs are necessary.Speaking of using larger bits though, that is the only negative of this router, as a result of the opening in the base. That opening is around 2-1/2" so it makes it difficult to utilize the entire plunge distance with very large diameter bits (raise panel bits, etc.) that are bigger than the hole.It also makes it harder to change the bit and forces you to install the bit while the router is plunged.I knew if this before I bought it and still bought it over the Porter Cable 693VSPK which has a larger base opening. However, if large bits are used with the Bosch, it can be very dangerous if the plunge mechanism isn't tight.

I also use this occasionally in a router table.I suggest users that will use this router in a router table or with large diameter bits readjust the spring/plunge mechanism.I would disagree with one of the previous reviewers that said the plunge was ineffective. It is very effective when not used upside-down in a router table PROVIDED you tighten the plunge. However, by readjusting the plunge mechanism, you can make it even tighter and safer for router table use.Do a web search on how to make this adjustment, but it basically involves the loosening and repositioning of the plunge handle. It takes some trial and error...but it's worth it.Just be careful to control the plunge handle once you take off the handle screw so the handle (internally) does not detach from the end of the plunge spring completely like I did or it will turn a 10 minute task into a 25 minute task. After making this adjustment, the router's 13 lbs. of weight plus another 20-30 pounds of my pulling force weren't enough to budge the router at all in my router table.

Overall, this is my favorite tool and has turned me into a Bosch loyalist.I would buy this or the Bosch 1617EVSK if I needed to buy another router. If those weren't available, I'd get the Porter Cable which is comparable in price, a little better in performance, a tad less in precision, and a little worse in comfort, but unlike the Bosch, will work with most generic router accessories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this product
I recently purchased this router and within days of receiving it tried it out cutting mortise and tenons. While many of the features were nice I found the accuracy and ruggedness of the router to be lacking. The plunging action was fine except that the bit will move off of perpendicular due to lack of rigidity in the plunge mechanism and the rods the router moves on. I also own a Hitachi M12V and do not have a bit of problem with its plunging accuracy. I noticed this when I was using the router on my new Leigh mortise and tenon fixture. I have since put my Hitachin back on the jig fixture and am back in business.

Other features like the soft start are very nice. The micro adjust is ok but somewhat stiff to set. I have not spent much time looking at this feature and will see if I missed something in the instruction manual. The machine works fine as a pattern cutter and I have decided to keep it since I need a router for run of the mill operations.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1613AEVS Top of the list!
It was either this one or the Dewalt DW621, the two best routers in this class. For the readers sake I will compare its features to the Dewalt. Both machines are 2HP, both have a smooth plunge but the Dewalt wins in this respect. They both have dust extraction, Bosch via an attachment and the Dewalt built into one of the plunge posts. If you do not hook up the Dewalt's dust extraction you will inhale the dust and eat the chips. They both employ Soft Start and are variable speed with constant speed technology. As for motor noise the Bosch certainly wins, it has half the noise of the Dewalt, and is comfortable to operate without hearing protection. Both machines have micro adjustment knobs, the Bosch's can be adjusted while the plunge is locked, the Dewalt's cannot. The micro gauge reading on the Bosch is much easier to understand than on the Dewalt. I like the 1/8 step graduations on the depth stop rather than the three post adjustable on the Dewalt. This feature is a user preference you can make your own assumption. The base on the Bosch is larger and more conventional than the Dewalt's. As for quality you can't go wrong with either, time will tell. Bosch makes an excellent product, take the quality for the best and study the features you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't all clamps be like this one?
This product is so well designed, one of the main reasons I bought a Bosch saw was because of their clamp. Do you think this is overstated? It is not. My twoprimary goals in sawing are (1) to keep all of my fingers, (followed distantly by) (2) to saw wood as needed. A good clamping system is of paramount importance to me.

If a clamp does not work quickly and easily, we tend to dispense with it and just hold the wood. I know several people who found out the hard way the drawbacks of holding while cutting. Bosch is the only manufacturer who goes the extra distance and includes (1) a quick adjust, (2) a quick push clamp, (3) all-metal construction, and (4) a cushion to avoid denting the wood. Bosch is the only company that puts a lot of thought into the design of their clamp.

Way to go, Bosch! I salute you with all the fingers that I was born with!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised
Like the clamp - it has a sliding adjsutment that makes it quick to use and when clamped down - the wood is going any place.Works great on the sliding compound saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch cordless combo pack
As a person who was in the construction field I know which products will last, and which ones I wouldn't use if the Manufacturer gave them to me for free. My doubts about buying the drill, the planner and the jigsaw on line before I could actually feel the weight displacement and the ease of the buttons was dispelled the minute I opened up the box. This Bosch cordless combo set is truly a solid piece of equipment, I have no doubt it will last me for a very long time. It's a great addition to my tool collection.THANKS BOSCH & AMAZON ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pure power
I purchased this Bosch grinder through Amazon.com to tuck point brick work. Received the tool in one week with free shipping. The paddle switch is a safe feature. When you release the paddle it stops. I found it to be very powerfull and it has absolutely no hesitation. Pure power!
I installed a dry diamond blade for cutting brick - cut like butter with a hot knife. Installed a 4 1/2" diamond tuck point wheel and removed a mortar joint 35" wide in seconds. Highly recommend this tool if your looking for a good grinder. Well worth the money for the safety & power it delivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal on a planer
I have used this planer primarily on doors in my house. In particular, I've found it long enough to get the start and end of the edge planed without "clipping" the edge. I'm not an expert door-hanger -- but it has easily paid for itself in saved labor costs.

A few words of advice on (interior doors). Plane when your house is MOST humid (usually in the summer) as the doors expand and you want them to close easily when they are most expanded. Be sure to plane an extra 1/64" or so to allow yourself a gap for a primer and at least one if not two finished coats of paint on the side edge of your doors. As for the tops and bottoms, leave them unpainted to allow the wood to dry if they are new doors, otherwise, a matching primer is more than enough and you need not bother with a finish coat of paint. Unless your doors is really badly off, you will not need to re-seat the hardware, but be prepared to if necessary. But before you start, make sure all of your hinge plates are on tight. No use taking a plane to a door if the problem is not the size of the door, but loose hingest. If so, replace the hinge screws with longer ones, and be sure to pre-drill the holes first to prevent cracking the door or jamb wood.

This tool beats hand planing allowing you to complete a door in just a few minutes. It will take you more time to get the door off and remove the hardware than to plane the edges. Adjustments are easy. I found this tool to be almost identical to the Makita planer which I borrowed prior to purchasing this one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Bosch invented the jig saw, and, with their Progressor top-handle model, they're getting close to perfecting it. The Progressor has a nicely shaped handle, tapered where other saws are not, and a nice rubber grip that lets users (of all hand sizes) steer the tool firmly in hand. (Some toolmakers ignore ergonomics, but not Bosch--and we appreciate it.) The safety mechanism works well with the trigger, and the cut is super smooth. We like the variable-speed dial, the light weight, and the foot plate's plastic cover, which ensures that surfaces won't get scratched as they can by saws with metal plates. The blade-change system--if a little tricky at first--works great. No question about it, this jig saw keeps up Bosch's reputation as one of the prime movers in the power tool industry. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

Editorial Review

Bosch recently introduced routers that it claims have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1618EVS is a member of Bosch's new Magnesium line. This variable-speed router features a stout 2-horsepower motor coupled with an all-magnesium base and housing. The result is a lightweight, well-balanced, and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. The D-handle provides excellent control--especially when reaching and turning on and off--and the auxiliary handle reverses, which is handy. (Bosch's 1617 model features this same motor in a base that has two nicely finished, hard maple, knob-style handles: it's prettier than the 1618 but not quite as easy to grip.)

Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course-adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Removing the motor from the base is a similar operation: simply release the flip lever, depress the course-adjustment lever, slide the motor out until it stops, then turn the motor counterclockwise and pull. It couldn't be easier, and there's no thumbscrew to wrestle with. Anyone who switches bases frequently will appreciate this design.

The 1618EVS also has soft start and electronic variable speed, more or less industry standards today. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 of an inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in Bosch's battle for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Generally good router with a few issues
In addition to this router, I also own a Porter Cable 890 router so in my evaluation of this Bosch 1618EVS I compare the Bosch router against the PC.

There's much to like with this router. It's powerful and the soft start and variable speed works very well.I like the control the D-handle gives me.I feel much safer starting a router with both hands on the handles than having to let go of one handle to click a toggle switch on the top of the motor.

The two major things I don't like about this router are:

1.It's difficult to take the motor out of the base and to put it back in again. When I received the router, it was obvious that something about the base just doesn't work well. And if you're like me and take the motor out to change bits, this gets to be a hassle. If you loosen the clamp bolt sufficiently to allow the motor to come out/go in easily, the base doesn't clamp tightly enough and the depth of your cut changes as you're cutting.

After fiddling with the motor and base a while, I found that a small amount of lubrication between the motor and base works wonders - the motor becomes easy to put in and take out.I need to see if this lubrication becomes a dust magnet and whether it holds up (how often I have to re-lubricate)

2.The other thing I'm not happy about (but this isn't as serious as the first) is the way the fine adjustment works. On my PC, the fine adjustment is continuous. That is, I can crank the router completely up or down using the fine adjustment. The PC has a lever for coarse adjustments, but using it is up to you.The Bosch has only a limited amount of fine adjustment.Once you use up the fine adjustment, you have to go back to the coarse adjustment and make a major adjustment up or down, then run the fine adjustment to the other end of the adjustment screw. You don't hit this all the time, but, when you do, it's a pain in the butt.

So why did I buy this router? The PC 890 series does not come with a D-handle with a power switch. The PC switch can be activated either on the top of the motor or lower down on the motor so you can switch it on and off without letting go of the handles - but I just wanted a D-handle router for non-router table use.

Would I buy it again?I can't say yet - I need some more time with the router to see if the motor/base problem comes back.

I also want to add a SAFETY pitch.Soft start routers cost a bit more than fixed speed routers but the startup is significantly safer. If you buy a fixed speed router (non-soft start), you'll be fighting the startup torque every time you use it.It only takes one time - one little bit of inattention on your part - and the router will jerk out of your hands on startup. It WILL happen to most woodworkers at least once in their careers. And for what you spend at the emergency room, you could have bought several soft start routers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Body Oxidation makes this router unusable for me
I bought the 1618EVS at the Chantilly VA tool show in March of 2003, and had problems with the router motor sticking in the base from the very first usage.Even with the clamp completely loose, the grey/white oxidation on the motor casing causes so much friction that installing/raising/lowering the router is a painful experience.Nothing I've tried so far removes the oxidation.I will be trying to return this, soon.Too, bad, because I love my other Bosch tools. (1619 router is awesome, as is 1587 jigsaw)

3-0 out of 5 stars height adjustment
My original purchase intent was the Milwaukee, but I purchased the Bosch based on favorable reviews I read..I find the height adjustment to be a little on the weak side. The locking clamp will not sufficiently release the motor body for movement unless the tension is backed off with a wrench. After setting the height, the clamping pressure does not feel secure enough so I had to re-tighten the tension with a wrench.Maybe it would work, but I am not interested in the router bit pulling down into the work and ruining the job in order to find out. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Base not perpendicular to shaft
Bought this unit based on recommendations forom others, but returned because the base was not perpendicular to shaft. It is probably not a big deal if you intend to use it for laminate trimming, but I was planning to use it as a mini router, so wouldn't work for me.Otherwise seemed and felt like a great unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laminate Router
I have used this particular Bosch Router in my countertop business for the last 18 years. These routers will last on average 4-5 years with every day use. Easy to change out bits, light weight, and very dependable with very smooth cuts. Highly recommend to any one who installs plastic laminate! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
I have a couple of jigsaws (including a Bosch barrel grip) and these blades are the best I have used.I prefer the Bosch blade style anyway, and this particular Bosch blade in particular.I have used this blade on many different woods and plywoods and I find the performance to be excellent in every material. The cuts are usually splinter free and the thin blade design allows for accurate curve cutting and scrollsaw-like precision.Though the blade is thin, it is surprisingly sturdy (they don't break too easily).

I highly recommend these blades to all finish carpenters and woodworkers. They are top notch and this is a very good price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there another choice?
These are the only blades smooth enough for any kind of finish carpentry. The straight teeth make all the difference in the world. From coping crown to the most extreme scrolling cuts, these blades are perfect!I haven't bought any different blade than these for years. If I can't find them in stock I'll do without rather than buying anything less than the best.If thinking about purchasing jigsaw blades, buy these. The only thing I would like to see from Bosch is the same blade a 1/2" longer. But you can't have your cake and eat it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great blades!

Editorial Review

This blade-left, 24-volt circular saw from Bosch offers as much power and cut capacity as you could ask for in a cordless circular saw.It can easily cut regular 1-1/2-inch-thick material at a full 50-degree bevel, and the bevel mechanism has a positive stop at 45 degrees. The saw features tool-free, rear-pivot depth-of-cut adjustments and tool-free bevel adjustments. The wrench for blade changes stores in a clip right on the base. The rear battery configuration on this saw allowed Bosch to give the tool good, even balance while maintaining a nice low profile. We like the padded grip on this saw, too--the same comfortable grip found on all of the company's 24-volt cordless tools--and at only 9.2 pounds, this saw is easy on the arm and hand. The full kit comes with the saw, one 2.4 amp/hr battery, a 1-hour charger, 18-tooth carbide blade, rip fence, and a carrying bag. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who needs a power cord?
After buying the Bosch 24 volt package, I am now finding dust collecting on my matching corded tools.I have found the reciprocating saw does run down the batteries quicker than the other tools, but I do like the tooless blade changing lever on the reciprocating saw and the jig saw.All the tools are top-notch performers. I love the easy height blade adjustment on the circular saw.It fell 25 feet off a roof and worked just fine after.(lucky for me, this saw is built). I did find out from Bosch that the batteries should be charged when the tool starts slowing down, and should never be run down to nothing, like the old nickle -cadmium batteries that developed a memory.Bosch makes a great product here!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bosch saw
This saw works well for small jobs, but you do have to be careful that you do not bind the saw blade. It is not nearly as powerful as a corded saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars this saw rocks
I have used every cordless saw avaible, and this one comes the closest to replacing it's corded counterpart. My wormdrive still looks new because I only get it out for BIG cutting jobs.I wish the thumb saftey was placed where it could be engaged without contorting my hand (like the Makita) but I bought it for power and precision, and Bosch delivers ... 4-0 out of 5 stars outfeed support
The outfeed support is a handy thing to have on a table saw. The only problem that I have encountered in useing it is that flexible materials like thin plywood tend to flex between the saw and the outfeed support and hit the support instead of going on top of it.This problem can be fixed by using a peice of scrap as a 'brige' to help the material make it onto the suport. ... Editorial Review

Ask any remodeler what two tools they'd most like to have in full-powered cordless versions and they're likely to ask for a drill and a reciprocating saw. This Bosch combo pack offers great cordless versions of both for one low price. The Brute Tough drill has an ABS/vinyl housing designed to stand up to the roughest job site conditions and a Bosch-built unibody power train that contains the motor, gearbox, and clutch in one contiguous unit for durability and the best alignment possible. It has a two-speed gearbox that offers up to 500 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,300 rpm in high-speed mode, as well as a 16-position clutch, a tight-gripping ratcheting chuck, and a soft ergonomic grip. The reciprocating saw features a unique dual-stroke lever, allowing the user to choose between a 3/4-inch and a 1-1/4-inch stroke to match the job at hand. The Bosch-built motor delivers 0 to 2,300 strokes per minute, controlled by a variable-speed trigger. Both blade changes and shoe adjustments are quick and tool free, and the saw's soft grips go a long way toward reducing the vibration that reciprocating saws have been known for in the past. This package includes the 18-volt Brute Tough drill, the 18-volt reciprocating saw, two batteries, a one-hour charger, and a carrying bag.--Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Major tool gloat.
I scored the 18v. set (CircSaw, JigSaw, RecipSaw, Hammer drill, Hand Planer, Flashlight, 2 batts and standard 1-hour charger...$515) and feel extremely fortunate to have done so. (I notice there's no such deal available now, so I'm guessing the weak GOP dollar is digging in.) Haven't used the planer much, but everything else works dandy. The jigsaw in particular, is a fabulous tool. That's a healthy pile of tools for $515, and they threw in a very nice tool bag that holds everything!

My ONLY complaint is the circular saw can seem just a wee bit underpowered cutting 3/4" ply, so if you're buying one piece at a time, that would get my 24v. recommendation. Everything else has power to spare for my dinkin' around purposes.

As an added bonus, Bosch had a free rebate for their fast charger last winter (1-'04), 15 minutes from total exhaustion to full charge. I was a little worried that it might stress the batteries, but it seems to work perfectly. There's no extra heat or anything. Put it all together, it's an exceedingly slick set-up. Very happy customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Buy!!!
I purchased this kit with the bonus jigsaw which made this an even more incredible value.I work construction/remodeling with about 10 other guys and this is by far the most used and abused tool kit on any job we do.I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more show up on site after the compliments I've received.I would recommend an extra battery (if you can find one). Every tool performs flawlessly and up to the Bosch standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasic Tools!
I have the 18 volt Bosch set that also included the Jig saw and the hammer drill.I can't seem to find that set in the tool listing, but its in the catalog Amazon sends me.I couldn't be more pleased with these tools. All of the tools had plenty of power and features such as quick release blades and vacuum port on the circ saw. Also, theblade for the circ saw is a standard size, unlike the Porter Cable saw I had before.I returned a porter cable set and bought these.Bosch's tools are quite superior than other rechargables I have used.

One feature I like is the bag.Other tool sets have large and heavy plastic boxes which are so tight you can hardly get the things back in there and the lid closed. My Bosch set came with a contractor's bag which is much easlier to carry in a house without bunping the walls.Additionally, the bag will hold additional accessories unlike some cases I have used.

The only weakness is the charger.I would like a charger that indicates battery condition, charge status, etc.Bosch's 1 hour charger has only one light and only tells you if its charging or not. ... Read more
