3-0 out of 5 stars Very rough opening mechanism
You'll need to be pretty strong to open and close the locking mechanism.Poor design in my opinion.

Also, not as roomy as I had hoped.

2-0 out of 5 stars poor quality, terrible customer service
Very rough operation of lock mechanism. Bottom shelf is almost unusable because of the position of locking mechanism. I attempted to contact the customer service dept. listed on the enclosed warranty sheet. The 1-800-number listed on the warranty
sheet referred me to a 10-10- number, which was a directory who
gave me the no. of Sisco. I received my phone bill today and found the directory charged me $5.98 to give me the Brinks customer service no. So what do you think of a manufacturer who

gives you a phony 800 no. which refers you to an outfit which charges you $5.98 to give you their phone no.? This, along with a poorly designed, poor quality product. I will never buy anything
from Brinks again. I don't think too much of Amazon for dealing with Brinks. BTW I sent an e-mail to their customer service dept.
Of course I have never received an answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install and use
This safe is extremely easy to install and use. I own this safe and agree that it would be very hard to remove. You secure it with heavy screws from the inside that go into the wall studs. A thief would need to know your combination before they could remove it. In fact we just moved and I'm about to order another one for our new house. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Brink's brand-name security comes in a small package that fits just about anywhere--it needs only 5 inches of clearance. It's made of steel and comes with a quick-open digital lock that you set to your own three- to eight-digit numeric code. Two keys are also included. Users can bolt the safe into studs from the inside, so it's virtually theft-proof (thieves would have to take out your wall as well, and few have time for that!). It has a nice safety feature, too. If the wrong code is entered once, the digital system locks out for 20 seconds. A second error locks it up for five minutes, and a third blunder will shut the system down for an hour. At home, we can imagine stock certificates, cash, jewels, and even a handgun locked inside. At the office, cash and checks, documents, and valuables will all fit easily. It's a good buy for the money--and the peace of mind. --KrisJensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work In Drawer
I bought this safe to secure a handgun. It was supposed to be bolted to the inside of a drawer. The digital pad does not work inside a drawer(and I tried several different ones). The product was returned.

5-0 out of 5 stars I need a manual
Hi I lost my manual and would like to see if anyone can help me by telling me how to reset the passcode

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality
This safe is just what the ad says-it is a safe.It is meant to be secure and it is.Documents that are important should be in this safe.I feel it would be better used lying down just because that way nothing will fall out at you when you open it up.It is very heavy duty and the ability to set your own code should make it easy to remember. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Docs get damp
Left the safe on the floor in our New York apartmnet.
I guess the floor gets a bit cold and condensation occurs inside.
The docs were a bit damp.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fire safe, but not people safe
I just bought the Brinks 5017 waterproof fire safe two days ago.Today it's being returned.
While I'm sure it functions well to keep things safe from fire and dry, I could pry open the lock with my bare hands...
I think to be called a safe, it should be a lot more secure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Credible fire/water protection; questionable security
I needed a simple safe to store documents, passports, and valuables. My primary needs were fire/water protection and having a central place to keep valuables; less concerned about theft. This safe feels solid. Two qualms:

1) There are two anchor tabs on the safe & lid designed to allow it to be secured to a permanent object with lock & cable (not included). However, these tabs are the same plastic as the housing, and you could probably cut through them with heavy scissors.

2) The locking mechanism is not convincing; components, while steel, are still a little flimsy, and something I'd expect to find on a mailbox. It gives slightly under hand pressure, and I moved some of the components with my fingers when it's in the open position.I believe it could be compromised with crowbar & sledge.

Despite the cons, I'm still glad I bought this. Now I have a central place to keep documents; it protects me as much against misplacing things as against possible fire. That it's waterproof was an added bonus, since water usually follows fire. But it's only certified not to leak when submerged in 13" of water for up to 8 hours.I guess that's enough, just don't drop it in the lake.Yet, the rubber waterproof seal is relatively exposed, and I wonder if it retains its efficacy AFTER being subjected to extreme heat.Nowhere does the product explicity claim that it can do both in the same day.Fire: 1550 F (850 C) for 30 minutes.5-year limited warranty, lifetime after-fire replacement guarantee.UL listed for fire but not water.Paper burns at 451 F, by the way.

The chemical smell? It's pretty faint, not really an issue.Smells more like the inside of a tire than fishy, and that is a pleasant smell to me.

So, this is a satisfying baseline option for simple needs.I felt ok paying $30 with free super-saver shipping.I'm sure it will last a long time, though I hope it doesn't get stolen; most people don't have steel beams in their bedrooms onto which to permanently fasten their safes.I'd recommend Brinks strengthens the lock mechanism and rethinks the anchor tabs.

Actual internal dimensions are 13.25 x 8 9/16 x 3.5 inches (335 x 215 x 75mm).Exterior: 16 1/8 x 12.5 x 5 5/8 inches (410 x 320 x 145mm).Weight: 23 lbs (9.5kg). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!
Kudos to Amazon for their quick delivery. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing that can be said about this safe. Purchased this mainly because of the Brink's name, but was disappointed with the cheap construction and plastic parts used in the lock mechanism. Within 24 hours the electronic lock stopped working altogether and had to resort to using the key to open the safe. Will be returning this tomorrow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised
This little safe works as it is advertised. The battery operated lock works well, and there is a key override system if the batteries fail. It is an easy way to keep secure passports, cash, jewelry, or other small documents.
However, this safe is not fire resistant, and any thief with basic lockpicking skills could open the key override lock. (on the flip side this is good if the batteries fail and you lose the keys, any locksmith can open the lock as well)
The best would be to secure the safe via the included bolts, otherwise, the safe can easily be carried out by hand. Like I mentioned before, it is a convenient way to keep valubles more secure than in an unlocked drawer, but not something to completely rely on. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Math Class
In response to the review above, .6 cu ft. doesn't mean that the safe is six inches. That means it's .6 CUBIC FEET (H*W*D). The actual dimensions are 15.50 inches x 11.88 inches x 11.50 inches. Unfortunately the problem with this safe isn't the size, which is undeniably small. The problem is the safes walls which are only one thin layer are susceptible to an intrusion via hole saw.Any basic hole saw could come right through the top of this safe without much effort. The secret to defending yourself against this rather simple entry is to buy a safe with a "tiered" wall layout, (picture a wedding cake on it's side). This way the intruder will have to spend much more time trying to enter your safe, and more time for a burglar means a more intense amount of risk. And, a more secure place for your belongings.

3-0 out of 5 stars what do you put in it?
what exactly fits in a 6 inch safe? a watch, a comb, the latest issue of sports illustarated. if you have enough money to buy this, then all the cash you have iis in gold, and that doesn't fit ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars packaging?
Apart from the fact this thing was stained and dirty, arriving in a flimsy cardboard box that was litterally ripped to shreds, the latch was bent out of shape and the color not as detailed in the image on this page, it appears to be OK. If you can find this in a store, go pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for home use
I needed a fireproof file case for home use, to protect important documents such as insurance papers, titles, etc. After visits to several local stores and some on-line research, it is clear there is a large gap between professional equipment (two or more hours of protection, $500+ and hundreds of pounds) and home equipment (30 to 60 minutes protection, about $100 and 100 pounds or less).
The major competitor to this Brinks is a Sentry product. Both are rated for 1/2 hour fire protection at 1500-1600 degrees, but the Brinks is also waterproof for hours when completely submerged (what is the first thing the fire department is going to do when the arrive at your burning home?)As well, the design of the Sentry products in this price/size/protection range left a substantial gap between the cover and body of the case. Finally, the Brinks came with a removable caster system which makes it easy to move around (it's about 40 pounds).
The down side is that it's rated for only 30 minutes.Sentry makes a case rated for one hour, with a larger internal size, but it weighed 100 pounds and had no handles.I could barely move it, but it was waterproof and better constructed than their 30 minute case, so it might fit your needs closer than mine.
Both companies make several safes rated for one hour. These are harder still to move, and may be a target for thieves; I did not get one since I was interested in protecting files and not valuables.
If you are interested in professional level protection, include the brand "FireKing" in your search.
Obviously, I did not actually test the protection level of this case --hopefully UL did a good job.

-----------------------------------

I just want to add that subsequent to this review, I ordered one of these for my parents. While the product is great, the packaging for shipping was poor, and it appears I was lucky to receive mine in one piece.Twice my parents received a significantly damaged file safe, which was not surprising -- there was essentially no cushioning around the item.Even though it is well constructed, it cannot survive being tossed around in a UPS truck without proper packaging.Amazon's customer service was very nice to me, and promptly refunded my money after the second failed attempt to ship one intact.

Final thought -- until they fix the shipping issues, see if you can find this in a store. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good little safe
This is a good little fireproof safe, but there are some design flaws. Although there is a digital keypad, you still need one of the two 'slave' keys to open the safe. There is no handle, and the key itself actuates the lock mechanism after you enter the right digital code.
There is a 'master' key that opens the safeif the digital keypad doesn't work, or if you are the main owner and want to allow for employees to use the 'slave' key with the keypad combo to open the safe. You can change the digital combination easily once the safe is open.
The .6 cu foot space is really limited to some small items and paperwork, don't plan on storing too many items inside. ... Read more
