Editorial Review

Keyless chucks can sometimes be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, bit changes are quicker and more convenient, but bit slippage can also be an issue at times. That's not the case with the DeWalt heavy-duty 3/8-inch VSR drill kit with keyless chuck. DeWalt has equipped this tool with a two-sleeve ratcheting chuck that locks shut and holds bits firmly in place. The drill weighs just 3.5 pounds but can power its way through metal, wood and masonry, with bit capacities of 3/8 inches, one inch and 1/2 inch respectively. A 6 amp motor delivers powerful torque and speeds of 0-2,500 rpm, while an advanced brush system automatically stops the tool when the brushes wear out, preventing serious motor damage. The drill is comfortable to hold and comes with a built-in bubble level that lets you know your holes are straight and true. All in all, a very solid performer.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drill, powerful & well balanced -- but noisy
This is a very nice, well designed drill.I use it mostly for drilling pocket holes with a Kreg jig. It's so much easier to drill pocket holes with this powerful 2500 RPM corded drill, compared to a slow cordless drill. This drill is super powerful, well balanced, and has a very comfortable hand grip. The Jacobs ratcheting chuck works nicely and has a great feel when tightened. The Dewalt case is also very nice with plenty of extra storage space and metal latches. My only complaint, though, is that this drill is very noisy. I wish Dewalt would focus more engineering on lowering noise output.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good drill
First off, this drill is now made in Mexico. I'm suspect of how this will affect the durability and reliability of the drill, so whatever positive things I have to say about this drill has that caveat
Next, this drill is extremely comfortable in hand, especially for those with medium to small hands. The weight and balance is exceptional as compared to the Milwaukee Magnum drill that I compared it to. That drill was really heavy and the bulk of the weight was balanced towards the front of the drill - not comfortable. The Dewalt drill is powerful enough to handle most chores but I wouldn't use it to drill cement.
It's also highly noisy (as compared to Makita drills) so be prepared to be numb in the ears or get earplugs. Overall, for the cheap price, I'd say it's a very useable, solid drill. If it were made in the USA and were quieter, I'd give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill
This drill works fantastic! The first project I used it on was to drill mounting holes for casters into 8/4 rock maple. This drill handled the task perfectly.I have been using this drill for about 6 months now with no complaints.

I use it primarily in tandem with my other cordless drill.I use it mainly to drill the holes and use my other drill to drive screws.

I have not had any problems with the keyless chuck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Pro
This is a great drill, but know what you're getting. It has a big motor but only spins up to 850 rpm (which is 1/3 the speed of a "normal" drill). It's perfect for spade bits and hole saws, but anything else should be left for your light duty drill.I'd recommend it; it's a great tool at a reasonable price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A screamer
This is a great tool for the price . One of my guys bought one. It drills pretty well in any material. Except masonry. It's not so fast that you burn your bits in steel. The torque is quite impressive . More than my MilwaukeeMagnum. You could easily hurt yourself with this bad boy. But that meansyou can use some pretty large bits and hole saws with it. Some times whenall your batteries are dead (if you forget to charge them) you need acorded drill just to remember how nice the cordless one are.

5-0 out of 5 stars handy handle
The 360 degree side handle on this drill is so convenient. Most powerful drills are ackward in hard to reach places. The balance and control this drill has is excellent.A good buy. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A remarkably compact tool, DeWalt's 3/8-inch, 3.2 amp right-angle drill is designed for electricians, plumbers, remodelers, and anyone else who works in tight places. The drill offers good speed (1,200 rpm) and weighs 3-3/4 pounds. The tool's most distinguishing feature is its paddle-type trigger, which runs nearly the length of the tool's body, allowing the user to engage the drill using all manner of inventive hand configurations. The molded neck makes the drill comfortable to grasp by the head, as well. The paddle trigger, however, does make it possible to engage the drill unintentionally while you're maneuvering or when you set the tool down. In order to make this drill so compact, DeWalt had to make a few design compromises. The tool has a keyed chuck; a keyless chuck, when you think about it, makes the drill's nose significantly longer. The drill also doesn't reverse, and depending on the materials you'll be drilling through, this is something to consider before you buy. But for anyone looking for an extremely compact drill that's built to last, this DeWalt is a smart buy. A key and a rubber key holder complete the package. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works just fine!
I didn't pay close enough attention when I ordered this drill. I failed to notice that it was not variable speed or reversible. All I saw was that it was the cheapest one. OK, so make sure it does what you want. If it does what you want, it works fine! I really have no complaints about the drill as it is. It has plenty of torque. The keyed chuck is very good quality. The paddle switch works fine, and is made out of metal (I think it's cast aluminum.) The switch is long and it pivots sideways - the hinge is parallel to the body/motor. I can get a good working grip at several places along the body, or with the drill twisted around in my hand at a wide range of angles. I can't blame the drill for my mistake, and besides, it has served me well in a couple tight places inside walls and and between some hard to reach ceiling joists. It is pretty compact, which is definitely a benefit. If I had it to do again, I would buy the 12volt DeWalt right angle VSR drill that uses the same batteries as my regular DeWalt cordless drill. But now that I have this one, I'm all set! Oh, one more thing; notice that it does not come with any kind of case. It just comes in a DeWalt yellow box. That's not a big deal, unless you are expecting a case.

4-0 out of 5 stars What no variable speed and reversing?
I did a lot of looking around at medium right angle drills. The drawbacks on the Dewalt is no variable speed, and no reversing. So it may be prone to stripping screws, and now way to reverse them out when they do. Ouch. For straight drill of holes it is great.
If you have air around, and don't need to make large holes in 2x12s, the air driver Porter Cable is sweet. Has air pressure, to create torque and variable speed adjustments, and has reversing capabilities, and is the best price on the block.
My pick is the Makita 110 volt model. It has the largest amperage motor in the medium duty range, has variable speed, reversing, and an adjustable speed limiting dial, an LED light to illuminate your work, and is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the tool.
Next is the Bosch with a slightly weaker motor at 3.8 amps, and doesn't have the speed range of the Makita, even though it is at the same price. Nice overall tool though.
Then comes the Milwaukee 55 degree angle drill. Fine for additional leverage while drilling, but could be a problem for deeper access areas when making 90-degree applications. Especially important in crammed quarters, when you would have to swing the body out the additional 35 degrees to get a 90-degree angle.
Black and Decker makes a lightweight unit, and will suffice for the occasional weekend warrior.
The Dewalt unit, fills a niche, but is a very good example of getting what you pay for. If it were not for the no reversing, and no variable speed capabilities, and for making the paddle switch so long, that gets in the way, even when you don't want it to, makes the unit, strictly for those who are price conscious first, and tool conscious later.
Wake up and smell the Makita. :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Full time construction worker
I own this particular drill, although it is a powerful drill for a compact right angle drill, the major draw back for me is the non-reversing feature. What I have needed to use it for mostly is driving in screws in compact areas such as the inside of cabinets. If there is a need to remove the screw for adjustment of what you are working with you are really up a creek. Other than that it is also not variable speed which is not critical but would definitely be a plus if it were variable speed. I would recommend the makita model although not as powerful it has all the things the dewalt model lacks.P.S. A friend of mine has this drill and while trying to change the bit with the drill plugged in accidentally hit the trigger driving the chuck key deep into his hand.VERY PAINFUL! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The DeWalt 21009 is not a heavy duty quality drill.
I thought it was time to upgrade from the 25 year old 3/8" key chuck Skil brand drill, so I wanted a good, basic, no frills keyless chuck drill when I chose the DeWalt 21009.I made a poor choice in two regards:the keyless chuck loosens while drilling, too often, and will also tighten up on it's own other times to the point I had to use an adjustable wrench to unlock it.Frustrating.

But worse than that, this drill didn't make it through even 6 months of very intermittent use before the motor overheated and is now incapable of drilling a hole of any substance before it grinds to a halt.

I had another DeWalt unit- a DW272 drywall screw driver quit holding bits the very same day.I am now a very disappointed DeWalt customer who will not be buying or recommending DeWalt to anyone.Very frustrating and extremely disappointing.

Luckily I kept the Skil drill and put it back in service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice
I purchased about a year ago and saved $20. It doesnt work, couldnt get it repaired for less than $40, so I gave it to a friend as a paperweight and am in the process of buying another Brandwith a decent warrantee like I should have done to begin with. Any Questions?

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt is drills
DeWalt makes the best cordless drills and I am now convinced that their corded stuff is just as good.I had a Makita drills that burned up - (pretty quickly) and I needed something new. This DeWalt is strong and I had a hard time bogging it down.More importantly - it did not get too hot after 5 minutes of drilling.I wasn't expecting it, but the tool also has a metal chuck, which is amazing.Highly recommended. ... Editorial Review

Cordless drills have become more powerful in recent years, but there's still something about a corded model that just makes it feel right. Packing a 6 amp motor,DeWalt's heavy-duty 3/8-inch VSR drill is a solid performer. Not too flashy or carrying too many extras, the VSR comes to work. And work it does. The VSR features single-gear, variable speed action, with an operating range of 0-2,500 rpm, and the highest torque rating in its class. An advanced brush system automatically stops the tool when the brushes wear out, preventing serious damage to the motor. This, coupled with an all-metal keyed chuck, glass-filled nylon housing, and all-ball-bearing construction, makes the VSR a drill built for years of trusty service.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good light-to-medium duty drill
It's inexpensive, light weight and it works. If you're drilling (or driving screws) into pine 2 x 4's, plywood, etc. this drill has plenty of power. The light weight also makes it easy to use for extended periods. This is a great little drill for light-to-medium duty. Understand that if you're remodeling an old house (75+ years) where the wood feels like more like stone, you'll find it difficult driving screws and boring large holes. If you already know you're going to be drilling rock-hard materials, go get a Milwaukee Magnum (a much higher torque, more expensive and noticeably heavier tool). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars what no carrying case?????
Why is it that if I go to Lowes and/or Home Depot they supply a carrying case?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill for home use
When my cordless drill failed I wanted a corded replacement. After looking at the local Home Depot we decided on the DW236.It isn't as heavy as similar drills, its quiet, the keyless chuck is fantastic and I love the adjustable handle for a firm, two handed grip.

I'm not a contractor, but a friend who is recommended DeWalt products and I'm glad I took his advice. If you need more power, get a hammer drill but for general drilling needs, this will be your preferred drill.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me..
I bought this item after buying the Milwaukee 1/2 Hammer Drilll and then returned the Milwaukee as I first thought it was more drill than I needed. I opened and used the Dewalt. I mixed a 5 Gal pail of Drywall mix with it and felt the speed was too low for my uses. I returned it and re-bought the Milwaukee. Overall it's a nice drill and fit's the hand well but, I thought the lack of power when needed wasn't worth the money. A shame, because I really wanted it. This drill would suffice for most around the house jobs but not when real power was needed. Features were nice, quite, and smooth. Chuck worked great too. Just lacked power. A dissapointment from Dewalt. I'll be looking at Milwaukee from now on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DRILL
I bought this drill to use in my work. I works great. It has a good reputation in the trades too.I have spoken with plumbers who use it and they like it a lot. It is a USA made tool and is built to last.I wish all my tools were made this well.I got this drill at Tool-upwith free shipping. They are in CT. It was 299 and I love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt DW124K
I bought the DW124 several years ago, when it was the only drill of it's kind. The other alternative at that time was mainly the stubby Milwaukee Hole Hawg, which was what I had used up until that point. Makita also made a Hole Hawg look-alike but wasn't readily available in my area back then.
The Hole Hawg was fast and had lots of torque but the short body length made it difficult to control. The bulky gear case behind the chuck and the extended motor housing made it too wide to get into really tight spots. It also required you to stay on top of it at all times or it had a nasty tendency to wrench your wrist and shoulder, smash your hand against a wall, bruise your kidneys or pound your upper thigh mercilessly all day long. In addition, when working from a ladder it could throw you off if the bit began to bind up and you didn't react quickly enough.

I now use the Dewalt drill on the job almost every day and even though it is well worn, it has never given me any trouble.

It is fast and has plenty of torque. The long body and handle gives the operator more leverage, making it much safer and easier to control, which is probably why both Milwaukee and Makita copied it and came out with their own similar models last year. I have tried both the new Makita RAD and Milwaukee super hawg and even though the DW124 has a lower 8-amp motor and slightly lower RPM's in both high and low speeds, I still prefer the DW124. Mainly because the Dewalt's chuck is further forward and the top leading edge of the gear case is beveled, so with the bail handle removed, as it always is on my drill, it will fit into even tighter spaces than the others will.
The DW124 is reversible and has two speed ranges. It utilizes a clutch when in low speed to prevent the torque of a jammed bit from snapping your wrist.
I use it with hole saws up to a 4-5/8" with either a 6", 12" or 18" extension. Dewalt says the maximum hole saw size is 6". It is also used with self-feed auger bits up to 4-5/8" and "nail eater" ship auger style bits up to 1-1/2 X 18".
The DW124 kit consists of a steel storage case, adjustable bail handle and a threaded side handle.
An important advantage that Dewalt has over other power tool manufacturers is easy access to repair parts and technical information. You can get parts and tech bulletins online, direct from Dewalt's Service Net. Parts are also available through Grainger Parts Operation. This can be a huge time and cost saving convenience for owners that repair their own tools, as I do.
A drill like the DW124 is a necessity for contractors working in the plumbing, electrical, HVAC and pipe fitting trades, because with the fast pace of construction and high cost of skilled labor these days, you really can't compete or work efficiently without having at least one on the job.
This is a very solid tool and I will definitely be buying another when the time comes. I would also have no problem recommending it to anyone who works in the trades and needs to drill many large holes quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, in new clothes
This "pot-bellied" drill motor is descended from a very similar design produced when Black & Decker Industrial still designed and made great-quality stuff (30+ years ago). It's a stout old mixmaster and drilling machine, but Milwaukee seems to have kept more of the build quality (e.g: chromoly helical gearing) that made top-grade American-made tools the world's best so long ago. ... this is a good drill. I have slowly moved more toward keyless chucks. they are a lot easier to use and i keep you from fuddling with a key or losing it. Very durable. it also comes with a warranty and the trusted dewaltname. the double handle grip makes it easier to drill straighter and holdit steadier. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handfull of Power
While updating my workshop, I needed to drill holes in 2x6 joists and 2x4 studs to run the electric down the length of the walls. The DeWalt DW245 had more than enough power to do the job.It cut through those studs like a hot knife through butter.A piece of advice, use the control handle...this drill will get away from you if you don't. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars superduty drill
I build houses out of autoclaved aerated concrete. See www.safecrete.com for more on that. I use this drill to mix the thin-set mortar in 5 gallon buckets and to drill 3-4" holes through the solid aerated concrete blocks. This is the only drill for me. I have two, one for mixing and one for drilling, that way I never have to change them out and can have different tasks going at the same time. I recommend to all our new homeowners who want to do it theirself that they get one of these drills.
This drill is designed for serious power. The applications I have will burn up the best variable speed drill in a day. This drill is so strong it is dangerous. I have seen my drill put two guys teeth through their lips, one being my own. I was drilling through a concrete wall and ran into some rebar, ouch. One time I was drilling through a block and hit some steel and it jerked it out of my hands and the trigger was locked. It kept spinning until it pulled the power cord right out of the drill. Never use the trigger lock, it can get you hurt.
This drill is fairly heavy, it needs to be. If you want a drill for screwing buy a variable speed drill, this is not the one for you. There is nothing wrong with the drill. You just have to know what you need. If you need serious strength and toughness, this is the drill for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars predictable and durable
Purchased the DW130 spade drill for mixing applications. I do everything from stucco, drywall, cement, plaster... ect. Great drill for all types of mixing. There are some drills in the industry for one or two specific applications, this drill is one of them.

Low torque, strong motor, perfect for the professional. If you are going to expect this drill to do all types of drilling (wood, cement, ect...) I would consider a different drill.

3-0 out of 5 stars non variable speed
considering the applications I use this drill for such as mud mixing and driveing heavy duty screws (tining applications) it would be just perfect if it had variable speed ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very useful right-angle drill, but...
I bought this drill to use to install metal straps to hold down the floor joists of my house to the plates, most in tight crawl spaces under the house.(hammering nails was not an option due to tight conditions)

Using this drill, I was able to fasten most every location with screws. It had plenty power, to the point that I had to watch the torque: it wanted to twist my wrist. The only problem was, if it had a reverse switch I couldn't find it on the unit. Being able to reverse screws would have been a good feature. That was the only drawback to it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A workhorse in many contractors' and serious carpenters' toolboxes, DeWalt's 3/8-inch drill is an old standard that professionals reach for time and time again. We especially like how its new ergonomic design incorporates finger grooves that allow you to grip the drill more comfortably from the back, unlike other more conventional pistol-handle drills. As a result, it's remarkably easy to apply pressure with the DeWalt as though it were an extension of your arm. This provides not only more power but also increased control. The trigger can be easily reached from almost any grip, and, as is standard, there's also a trigger lock if you're using your drill for sanding or polishing. One of the drill's best added features is the built-in two-way level that assists in drilling accurate holes either vertically or horizontally--a feature you won't find on most of the competition. The drill is durable, too. DeWalt has definitely designed this drill for long life, from the burly fan-cooling system to the all-ball-bearing construction down to the solid 3/8-inch keyed chuck. And at just 3.3 pounds, it packs 5.4 amps, with a no-load speed range of 0 to 2,500 rpm. Simply put, this drill delivers performance and dependability without putting a hole in your pocket. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, dependable, muscular drilling and driving.
Don't bother with the nervous-seeming Black & Decker or Skil 3/8" corded drills. For a few bucks more you can have this professional grade monster powering though whatever you ask it to do.The keyless chuck is easy on your hands and holds fast. The yellow shell is touhg, comformatble, extremely visible, and durable. It's pretty quiet also.No bad things to say whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Drill
I have owned this drill for 3 years now and it is very powerful for a 3/8" drill.I use it alot and have never had any problems.Only wish that I would have gotten the keyless model.

Editorial Review

In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not just drywall and sheet material, it cuts tile
I have used the DeWalt cut-out tool in drywall work for about two years now.In that I use it mostly with a pilot bit.You have to learn a little by experience to avoid burning or breaking bits, but once you do learn, you can cut drywall in place like nobody's business.Really does the job in opening doors and windows, cutting outside corners, etc.Lots of other uses have come up--same as mentioned by others, and it has worked well in all of those, too.But here is one I recently discovered:Fit a carbide burr bit and with a little care you can cut china, terracotta and even porcelain tile to fit irregular, curved or freeform joints. To fit smaller corner cutouts, no need for a saw or nippers, just cut carefully with the carbide bit.Great for cutting holes in tile for pipes or to allow subsequent drilling into the substrate.Make sure you practice on some waste tile first. But it works like a charm.

5-0 out of 5 stars overreaches
this is the second of two reviews on this same tool that i have written. in the first i bombed it as basically useless in cutting curves in hardiboard tile backer. but i then discovered the way to do it is to make several cuts each a little deeper into the board( using the guide and depth ring) until you have completely pierced the board. very smooth strong. good tool well made.
the first review i have deleted, I hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great DeWalt tool!@
This is yet another addition to DeWalt's great line of tools. It's awsome for cutting drywall, plaster, plywood, etc.One of the most important features to me is the bump off switch. It makes it easy to shut the machine off when your hands are full.Other things that I like include the adjustable metal guide, the carrying case, and the good assortment of bits. One thing that I would like to see DeWalt include on this tool is a small worklight.I think it would only increase their ability to compete with some of the other manufactures of these rotary tools. ...
