Editorial Review

Hang new kitchen cabinets, tile the bathroom wall, install a border in the baby's room, add shelving to your home office--the Black & Decker BullsEye laser line generator and stud finder is the tool for the job. In fact, the BullsEye is two tools in one. The built-in stud finder works at depths up to 3/4 inches and provides both an LED and alarm indicator to signal when you've reached the edge of a stud. Once you locate the studs in the wall you're working with, you can then hang the BullsEye at the appropriate height using either the included drywall pushpin (for drywall surfaces) or the keyhole insert with a standard screw or nail (for all other surfaces). Activate the self-leveling laser lines, and the built-in pendulum levels the unit automatically. Depending on the light conditions in your work area, the laser lights should be visible up to 10 feet in either direction. No more chalk lines or straight edges. Just a clean, accurate guide for where to place your fasteners. The included target cones are effective up to 50 feet in either direction of the unit, providing an overall work surface of up to 100 feet in length. The BullsEye works best indoors and is intended for the home enthusiast. Professionals will likely want something a bit more versatile (the BullsEye works only on a true horizontal axis, so it can't determine plumb or set a straight line at any other angle).--Carl Thress ... Features

  • Target cones enhance visibility of light at long distances
  • Laser line automatically levels
  • Stud finder detects studs through walls up to 3/4-inch thick
  • Rubber overmold provides comfort and grip when handheld
  • Hanging pin fastens unit to wall for hands-free convenience

5-0 out of 5 stars How did we live without this?
This tool is WONDERFUL.It's the best stud-finder we've ever used.It actually is accurate!I just used the laser level to hang borders in three rooms, and the job went a whole lot faster and smoother than I anticipated.Worth the investment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but not super accurate
This is a really good product idea, but unfortunately mine didn't live up to expectations. My laser level is about an inch out of level over 10 feet. That's probably within building specs, but I figured a product packing a laserbeam would be a lot more accurate.

I have some walls that are 20 feet long. I'd hoped to put this level on the wall and hang a bunch of pictures along a level line, but I can see the few inches of error when I look for it, and that'd drive me nuts.

I only use it for jobs that my spirit level can't span, but that are still under about 10 feet. Anything bigger and I get the chalk line out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
I love this tool. We built a new house and I used it for hanging curtain rods, verticla blinds, pictures and shelves. Our wall decorations look organized and very stylish. I like the fact that you can mark on the adjacent wall.

We have these shelves for my kids room that are beautiful but are a total nightmare to hang. It took me 3 tries at our previous house to hang them because there is no room for variance. I hung them in 1 try using this tool.

I have read other reviews where people complain about the holes left when hanging the device and it's nonsense. It really is a pin sized hole.

This is the best tool I have purchsed in 10 years because it saves me so much time when doing projects. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars stinks
batteries.this is a great product killed by now having internal batteries.versapak version was great, but this "next generation" model just doesn't hack it.you can take my word on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk, not made to last!
My Dustbuster lasted a whole two years, but the last year it would only work for 3-4 minutes before the charge ran out.I found myself running like a maniac to quickly clean up a mess before the battery ran down.It also has low suction, so heavier things like sand don't get sucked up completely. This is one of several Black & Decker appliances I have been dissappointed with in the last few years. From the product lifespan, to the lack of customer service - they aren't the same company my parents loved. My mother had one of the earliest dustbusters which lasted 10 years, and charged like a champ.Oh well.

Instead, I recommend the Euro-Pro shark.I have had one for a while now, and love it.It has a very long cord, it's lightweight, and it has enough suction to pick up small children and pets!It cost a little more than the Black & Decker Dustbuster, and outperforms it completely. And if you can't rely on your hand vaccuum, then the price is irrelevant.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's *NOT* The Batteries...
I too owned this particular model, and by pure chance, so did my neighbour.Mine stopped working after 6 months, in which I followed the directions and kept the unit clean. My neighbour's stopped working after 8 months.Instead of throwing them away, (there were no service centres nearby, and B&D's shipping charges were insane) I took my tester out to see where the trouble might lie.Much to my surprise, there was no power reaching the charging base of the Dustbuster, so I immediately focused my attention on the charging unit.I separated the wires from the charging base and put the tester to work. Sure enough, there was no power coming out of the charger! The verdict? It wasn't the BATTERIES after all, it was a defective charger.(just like the other reviewer said).

I did some more research on this, and found that there were several Dustbusters made (maybe hundreds?) that seem to have had faulty chargers. Why B&D never issued a national recall remains a mystery, but it makes perfect sense that maybe they didn't know about this issue? If they did, then they looked the other way, hoping that the problem wasn't too widespread. I remember the salesman at Sears saying that quite a few of these models came back for the exact same reason. (Dustbusters in Canada have a 2yr warranty) I think there was a quality control issue at their plant in China, and interestingly enough, the newer Dustbusters have a different charger on them.We shall see if this problem has been resolved, as I've just purchased another one (model CHV9600-see my review) and will take note of how long that one lasts me.My first Dustbuster purchased in 1990 lasted 8 years, and all models after that have given me trouble! ... Remember when the DustBuster first came out? Erase that memory. This baby is generations beyond that. You get more run time and more power than you would expect from a cordless vacuum, and here's a great improvement: B&D has increased the capacity by 70 percent. That's a lot of dust and grunge. Extra tools snap right onto the vacuum, ready at hand. Because it comes with two VersaPak batteries, you can keep one on charge while the other is in use and never be without your DustBuster. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fixing the recharging problem with B&D DustBuster
I/ve fixed our problem with the DustBuster not holding a charge and not re-charging as follows: 1) Push release button and remove motor housing from vacuum 2) Gently remove the motor housing cover plate with a small flat bladed screwdriver 3) Remove fourscrews (two on outside and two on inside) with a long, small bladed phillips screwdriver (note how on/off switch and release button fits before separating housing 4) Turn switch on and let rotor run completely down...rotor will stop 5)Clean all copper with a Q tip and rubbing alcohol (move the switch back and forth to clean under it) Alclhol will self dry 6)Using a regular finger nail file, gently file contact points on motor and then on charging unit (you'll have to depress and hold charging unit contacts with your small screwdriver to make good contact)7) re-assemble the unit and charge overnight. You'll be amazed!!!After doing this, don't store the vac in the charger full time (it decreases battery power just like on any rechargeable appliance; and, let the battery completely run down about once a month then put it in the charger overnight. GGOD LUCK!

We can't think of anything we'd want to add to this little hummer. It's incredible what B&D has engineered into this system (we don't think it's fair to call it a "screwdriver"). The 5-foot tape measure fits on board, or you can remove it for separate use. Dual speed range lets you drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower speed. A 23-position clutch, just like what's on the big boys, will keep you from stripping your screws. But get this: Unlike conventional cordless screwdrivers and regular power drills, this tool's handle easily locks in three positions for tight areas and awkward spots. Genius! And just like the "real" drills, this one's got an accessible forward/reverse rocker switch for backing screws out, too. Here's something, though, that the big-boy drill makers should pick up: It's got on integrated light so you can always see your work surface clearly. For the money, we haven't seen anything like it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • On-board bit storage conveniently holds a 1/16" pilot bit and double-ended screwdriving bit
  • 6-volt drill and screwdriver, tape measure, light, and more in one convenient cordless tool
  • 2-speed gear box gives you a low speed for screwdriving and high speed for drilling
  • 3-position pivoting action for maximum flexibility and versatility in tight areas
  • Integrated light with separate on/off switch illuminates dark work areas

5-0 out of 5 stars Form plus function: Works as good as it looks
The benefits of cordless power tools are obvious, but who says you need to pay hundreds of dollars to get the job done if you live in an apartment and don't have a contractor's license?

For $25, this is a super addition to any toolbox -- or kitchen cabinet. This is a great gift idea for dad -- or mom, for that matter.

Here's why:

* Quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash. A nice, tight grip.
* Multiple forward or reverse speeds at the click of a button. Torque control on the collar is easy to adjust and visual icons make it easy to figure out which one is best depending on whether you're using a screw or drill bit. Sweet.
* From 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge. Because it can take about six hours to re-charge, it's a good idea to leave this plugged into an outlet in the kitchen, bathroom or garage (but not longer than 3-4 weeks without use to avoid reduction in battery life).
* Ability to pivot the position of the handle or angle is big plus and great way to avoid carpel tunnel pain.
* The LED light, built-in removable tape measure and bit holder on the handle are fluff, but add to the coolness factor.
* Surprisingly light weight for it's rather large size.

So far no complaints. Price, form and function add up to a solid 5-star rating. You simply can't go wrong here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product!
This is one of those products where you say "Cool" at first glance. Then when you use it, it just gets better. Not only is this a nice reversible cordless drill (for small jobs), but it has the flexible handle...and a handy place to hold the extra bits, and the built in tape measure! Now, it will never replace your 3 horsepower Sears Craftsman bad-boy for the big jobs (i.e. building a house), but the Pivot Plus is definitely handy around the house! ... Editorial Review

Black & Decker has taken five popular home workshop tools and put them together into one compact, cordless unit in the Black & Decker 14.4-volt cordless multi-tool kit. The 14.4-volt model offers five interchangeable, locking heads that provide drill/driver, circular saw, jig saw, router and sander/polisher features. While not as powerful or feature-laden as most stand-alones, the multi-tool provides an excellent starting point or addition to a home enthusiast's arsenal. The drill head operates at variable speeds of 0-700 rpm. A 24-position clutch provides up to 115 in./lbs. of torque. And a 3/8-inch keyless chuck makes bit changes easy. The 3-3/8 inch circular saw features a 20-tooth carbide tipped blade and operates at 0-1,100 rpm. A spindle lock allows quick blade changes, while a thin kerf minimizes waste. The jigsaw features Black & Decker's exclusive, tool-free QuickClamp blade change system. A see-through bezel offers a cleaner view of the cut line, while a blade support roller keeps the blade straight for an accurate finish. The router features a 1/4-inch collet and spindle lock. Good visibility, micro-depth adjustments and an operating speed of 0-8,000 rpm make it well-suited for small, high-speed project work. The sander/polisher is also versatile. It reaches into tight spaces, accepts Mouse attachments, and spins at 0-8,000 opm.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the occasional fixes around the house
LIKES
1) Great price. This use to be 99$ back then.
2) Multi tool. 5 tools in one! Thats like 20$ each tool.
3) Comes with spare battery and a nice bag.

DISLIKES
1) Not powerful enough for the router, circ saw
2) Circ Saw doesnt cut really deep
3) Router is really miniature
4) Batteries die fast w/ the router, circ saw
5) A little on the heavy side

1-0 out of 5 stars Low power? No power!
Well, the jigsaw ain't great, but at leaset it works-just don't try to use it one handed. The ridiculous placement of the "safe start" button means you have to have both hands on the tool to use it. High vibration means jagged cuts despite a finishing blade. And no top control means "swervy" lines. Fine for most, but it bothered me. The sander drained BOTH batteries within minutes. It worked well for those minutes, though. And don't get me started on the drill! No power whatsoever. My wifes 9.6v Bosch out-drilled/out-drove this P.O.S. So, a $200 jigsaw that isn't very good. Yowza. I think I'll try Ryobi. I've heard good things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy for the House
This kit is excellent for the house. I've used it many times for all sorts of stuff. I'm glad it doesn't take up too much space; you don't have to lug a different tool to a project...they are all right there. If you plan to use it for serious woodworking, I'd imagine that it wouldn't be too great in that the battery will drain somewhat quickly when using it as a jigsaw(but then again it comes with two batteries.) For a handy and sufficiently powerful household tool package, this is both effective and even fun. ... Read more

The Black & Decker PivotDriver two-position screwdriver is great either in the workshop or to have around home for projects that require quite a bit of screwdriving. This tool is super easy to use and locks in two positions--in-line or pistol-grip--for installing cabinet hardware or tightening screws, say, under a counter or in any other hard-to-reach place where you'd bang your knuckles with an ordinary screwdriver. Toggling between forward and reverse is easy with the rocker switch, while the automatic spindle lock allows you to manually start screws or finish them without stripping or overtightening. The narrow nosepiece also gives you added reach when installing hardware in tight spots.

The PivotDriver runs off the VersaPak battery system, which is interchangeable with all Black & Decker VersaPak products. The battery is easy to remove--just press the button near the bottom of the screwdriver. The 1.2 amp, 3.6-volt battery produces enough torque and run time for any basic household project. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

  • Two-year home use warranty
  • Handle locks in two positions: inline grip and pistol grip
  • Rocker switch with forward and reverse
  • Automatic spindle lock for greater control when starting and finishing screws
  • Interchangeable battery system, works with all VersaPak products

5-0 out of 5 stars A LIFESAVER!
You'll find a million uses for this cordless screwdriver which will save you hours of frustration putting up miniblinds (which is what I bought it for!), assembling furniture or just making repairs. Its low price for the amount of use it will get just makes it all the more valuable. This is a must-have for every house, car and boat. Also makes a great gift! This little gadget saved my sanity when I moved into my new home and had tons of curtain rods and blinds to install, as well as assembling my waterbed. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A skeptic no more
At first I was reluctant to purchase a cordless screwdriver; I already owned a perfectly fine cordless drill which had served admirably as a driver for many years. When I finally broke down and bought the Black & Decker PivotDriver (for reasons I cannot explain), I was quite pleasantly surprised by how beautifully it worked, and by how much better suited it was to driving screws than my drill ever was.It quickly became one of my favorite tools.

I am unlikely to ever again use my cordless drill as a driver, and here is why: First, the PivotDriver is much lighter and smaller, making it effortless to hold and maneuver.Second, its handle can be locked into two different positions, unlike most drills, which have a fixed pistol-grip configuration. It's great being able to switch between the two positions instantly, as one or the other is frequently more comfortable or offers greater maneuverability. Third, the spindle automatically locks when the button is released, turning it into a conventional screw driver. This is useful for really tough screws, or those that require a gentle touch. Finally, both forward and reverse are conveniently located on the "trigger", which makes a lot of sense for a screw driver (but not for a drill).

I am also impressed by the amount of torque delivered by this small device. It can handle some really difficult screws.I recently installed about a dozen metal braces in my house (part of seismic retrofitting), each one requiring between 8 and 20 screws in some rather hard and difficult-to-reach wood. The PivotDriver made it almost trivial.Go ahead, ask me if I'm a fan of cordless screw drivers.

The PivotDriver uses a "VersaPak" 3.6 Volt rechargeable battery; the driver comes with a charger and one such battery. The battery that is included is silver, but you should know that it also comes in a gold version. The gold batteries are *much* better than the silver ones; they hold a charge longer and pack a little extra punch.(Love that torque!)These batteries (both silver and gold) can also be used in numerous other cordless tools offered by both Black & Decker and Sears (aka Craftsman). They are very light-weight and easy to pop in and out. They take up to six hours to charge, however.

At the risk of sounding sexist, allow me to offer some advice to the ladies. If you're looking for a great practical gift for hubby, look no further. It's true; for some mysterious reason guys really do love cordless screw drivers, and this one is a beaut. To really impress him, after he's opened it and thanked you profusely, casually say "I almost got you the ______ version, but I thought you would appreciate having at least 25 foot-pounds of torque."He'll see you in a whole new light.(You can fill in the blankwith any other brand name.)

Few things these days seem to be truly well designed, durable, and inexpensive. This little gem is all three.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the average do-it-yourselfer
I got this for my spouse and he loved it.Its easy to use, runs as long as he needs for the minor projects and repairs he does.If you are a professional who'd use a tool like this, it won't last nearly as long as you'll need. The target audience should be the average John or Jane who really just wants to make the few times a screwdriver is needed a month less work so things get fixed in a timely fashion.

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK - Broke after using TWICE
I received this driver for Christmas, used it twice, and then heard a loud grinding sound. After taking off the drive head, I noticed that two metal posts securing plastic gears had sheared!

By comparison, my Skil driver is going on 10 years!

B&D is JUNK!

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, sort of.
I used to use a B&D cordless screwdriver, but gave it away when I found it often took as long, or longer to use this tool than using a manual screwdriver. Sure, it's faster when you have a LOT of screws or very long screws, but a cordless drill is faster still, and has the advantage of variable speed and more power. Using this screwdriver to drive long wood screws is an excercise in patience as you watch it sloooowly drive the screw in and then quit halfway as it runs out of power.

Cordless screwdrivers are cheaper than drills, true, but overall I think the classic 7.2volt Makita cordless drill is just about as compact, much more versatile, much more powerful, lasts much longer and will drive a lot more screws on a charge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good value.
Price and quality all the way. The only negative item would be no rip fence came with the cordless circular saw and I was unable to find it at any of the local hardware stores that I shop at. Other than that it is a very good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 18 Volt tool kit
My kit is very similar but not quite the same it's theFSC618K-2

Anyway I've read some reviews that say the chuck on the drill can't hold a bit at all and its only real use is as an 18-volt screwdriver. I've run a 1/2" bit to the hilt into a 4X4 several times just to test it, and there was no slippage at all. I'm not really sold on the pop off chuck, but it has saved time when I was building some books shelves recently. But I would say that 280 lbs. of torque is plenty for most applications, but have to admit that I am a novice and use the drill/driver around the house. I've only had it a little over a month but have played around with it, and am very impressed with it. Especially when compared to most of the other 18 volt drill/drivers out there. The circular saw cuts 2X4 with no problem and I have used it to cut about 10, 1"X6 "shelf's to length with plenty of power left over. The Cut Saw is just cool. I haven't had time to use it much but in your hands it feels as if it has enough power to do just about anything you might need it to do. The vacuum is a step up from the basic dust buster does a fine job and has great battery life. The flashlight is bright and I've used it to drain the partially used batteries before recharging. My kit is a little different in that I do not have the laser level/stud finder or the work table and the tool bag looks smaller, but this is as close as to what I have as I could find. My kit included the Radio/charger FS100 Stud Finder The Drill Circular Saw, the Cut Saw Light and Vacuum. But other than that the kits are very similar. I bought four extra batteries and the fast multi-volt charger on E-Bay so in case I ever do get busy with the kit I'll be able to keep it powered. I would say you would have a hard time beating this kit for the performance and price (check E-Bay). Plus it's been fun to play with, and I've read DeWalt builds the Firestorm stuff. I am looking forward to putting it to a real test. But I'm sure it will pass any tests I put it through with flying colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tools make the man!
Someone once told me a man is only as good as his tool. Well, when I purchased the Black and Decker 7-tool combo kit I became a man and for a year I was king of the neighborhood. I had become the most respected carpenter in the project. I built four house that year and was going strong as I was branching out my business. Until one night I awoke to find some of my tools missing. I figured I must have left them on a job or something. The next day I searched for them but to no avail. The next night I woke and found the rest of the kit gone. The next night I burned the candle at both ends waiting to find the culprit. I had fallen asleep and felt something tugging at my underwear. I awoke and jump out of my seat when I found little gnomes racing through the house holding my underwear in victory. I pulled my best 007 and tracked them down in the crevices of the basement. There they were singing "We are the tool and underwear gnomes. We need lots of supplies to make it on our way. Big business is a freight train on a path to money right away."
I stood there alone and cold as a breeze went up my pajamas, begging for my atleast my hammer in trade for my silence. They simply told me it was my word, a middle aged working class man, against that of a GNOMES. I guess it was back to the drawling board, without a pen. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If your work requires you to drill or drive in a lot of tight or awkward places (under sinks, overhead, inside cabinets, between pipes, etc.), this Black & Decker five-position drill/driver may be the perfect tool for you. The drill features a compact design and swiveling head that rotates 90 degrees front and back of center, with 45-degree stops along the way. A straightaway, inline stop even provides added reach for tight spaces in which a standard power drill might not fit. Lightweight and nimble, this Black & Decker drill is extremely maneuverable, as well. A comfort-grip handle and three-finger trigger provide excellent control, while a 24-position clutch and variable speeds of 0 to 700 rpm allow the drill to power through wood, steel, or masonry without damaging bits or stripping screws along the way. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product- ready when you are.
I recently bought a house for the first time and did not have a cordless driver. I picked this up, thinking that it might come in hand. Little did I know that EVERY single project I encountered, would involve this little guy. I have had it for several months, now, and have only recharged it a couple of times- it holds it's charge well and run like a top. I have to be honest, I have not used the rotating head on it at all, but it is narrow enough to fit in tight places and the accessory bits are just about all you could ever need. My 12v CORDED DeWalt is going to be doing nothing but collecting dust, with this thing in my arsenal. This is one of the best $50 I have ever spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great versatility and power
Black and Decker has a great product with this little gem. It is much more versatile than a drill and is light weight as well. It has far more torque than the wimpy cordless screwdrivers, even more than Dewalt's 7.2V screwdriver, with the same great quick release adapter built in. I find this much easier to use than a standard cordless drill with a standard chuck (even the keyless ones) for drilling pilot holes and then driving screws. And as for driving, how about 3.5 in deck screws into treated lumber and even 4x4's. This baby has the power.
Another great feature is the five positions you can put the head in, to give you access in close quarters with enough power to do something with it. Great for hard to reach places.
It comes with a molded plastic case and an assortment of drive bits, drill bits, and nut drivers to get you started. If you want to use standard drill bits, buy yourself a quick release drill chuck. The only draw back is the long charge time (no quick charger) and only one battery. Otherwise I would have given it a 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sticks Its Neck Out
This is a handy tool, solidly built and you'll find a surprising number times you'll be glad for the swivel neck for getting into awkward places. The neck locks firmly into place, with no play. The quick change bit system makes changing bits fast and painless, and the three finger trigger is nice and comfortable to use with great control over drill speed.

Two things niggle me about it though. As someone else mentioned, it seems to have low torque even at the highest setting, so you should only get this for fairly light household and assembly chores. And the battery charge cap does not give any visual clue as to when the battery is fully charged, so you have a hard time knowing when it's full again.

Other than that, it's a great drill! ... Read more

Need a reliable straight line without spending a bundle? This is our choice. Granted, this laser’s not self-leveling, but it’s easy to level and does produce a dead-on accurate horizontal or vertical line. It attaches easily to a wall with either the magnetic hanging pin or the included drill anchor wall mounts. Because it’s a single pin hanger, adjustments are as easy as the touch of a finger. Nice storage bag keeps the tool clean and protected. Just the right tool for the homeowner who’s adding a chair rail, wallpaper border, shelving, cabinets, tile, or a host of other projects. You could spend more for a self-leveling unit, but we think this suits most homeowner’s needs.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed, poorly engineered.
The purpose of this tool is to project a relatively long and straight laser line for alignment, construction, or what have you.As an engineer and general fan of Black and Decker's products, I was sadly surprised to find out that this product is neither useful or accurate.

The good news:
It runs on a 9v battery (cheap and easy to replace).Comes with two different mounting options in addition to the magnetic base.

The bad news:
1. The line is inconsistently bright along it's projected path.It seems about 2 to 3 times brighter in the center than on the far edges. This effect is disturbing because it's also thicker in the center. At the edges, the line is so dim that you need enhancement glasses (sort of like safety glasses, but red in color) to see it OR you have to use it in near total darkness.

2. The bubble levels inside the unit are too small, inaccurate, and not adjustable. When I placed this unit on my tablesaw (which was precisely aligned and leveled) it shows (incorrectly) that the saw is tilted about 2-3 deg. This is a huge problem and makes the unit difficult to justify. The owner's manual says that the levels are only calibrated to the laser line when held or hung up against a vertical surface.Okay, but what if you want to lay tile, place a fencepost, or align cabinets?

3. Mounting the laser to the wall requires drilling a hole. The base for wall mounting requires a small hole in the wall and as you rotate the base, three prongs expand out, temporarily locking the base to the wall. It's a pretty good system, but other manufacturers have systems that allow vertical surface use without drilling. It'd be a hassle to have to fill and paint the little holes constantly.

4. The bonehead that designed this did NOT for some unknown reason, make the sides square. So you cannot simply lie it on either side and expect a horizontal line...I'm lost on this one.Miserable engineering at it's worst.

In short, this unit is really only good at projecting a straight line.YOU have to level that line.Get a plumb bob or a 4' level, set this up and adjust the line it projects to level, then you're set. But, on the other hand, if you have a 4' level and plumb bob, all this unit provides is a simple, straight line, confirming your measurements.

Pros: Small, simple, 9V common battery power supply.Comes with case.

Cons: Not self-leveling.Must use other tools to adjust.Case not square.Cannot project line from a horizontal surface.

Even on sale for $20, it's hard to justify this product. It really only projects a line...and not even a straight one.A straight edge would work as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
"It's my favorite tool" or so I told my kids when they gave it to me for my birthday. In reality, it is a basic laser pointer in a fancy package.Yes, it produces a straight laser line on the wall or floor, but you need to use a manual level to get it correct. It is difficult to hang on the wall and cannot be done without putting a small nail hole in a spot where you probably don't want one.Spend the extra money and buy a better mounting, self leveling and more accurate one if you need things to be absolutely perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Door Stop
This is the BIGGEST waste of money there is. I can eye a better level line than this thing. It doesn't give you a level line until you use a real level, to level it???? whats the point??? Save your money. This thing makes a better door stop than a laser level. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Cordless screwdrivers are a wonderful invention, but some jobs around the house still require that extra control a conventional screwdriver can provide. The 3.6-volt, three-position Black & Decker 9078 screwdriver combines the best of both. As a power screwdriver, the unit operates at 180 rpm and offers up to 40 in./lbs. of torque, with 24 settings. A torque control collar allows the operator to match the torque to the job, reducing unwanted strips. A pistol grip and three-position handle allow the screwdriver to fit into some pretty tight spaces, while a spindle lock (located on the forward/reverse switch) allows the operator to use the unit as a conventional, manual screwdriver when necessary. This is especially helpful when starting and finishing screws. The screwdriver comes with five double-ended bits. Each locks securely into place and is easy to remove. The handle is also easy to adjust with just the push of a button. All in all it's a pretty handy little tool.--Carl Thress ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not powerful enough
Good for light tasks, but not powerful enough.

Like Black and Deckers other 3.6 volt driver, this one does not have removable batteries, so you cant exchange with your other 3.6 volt tools.

Try the PD600 6 volt model. Its just slightly more expensive, and can be used as both a pilot drill and a driver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, rugged, but shy of perfect
At this price point for an electric screwdriver, I have one recommendation: temper your expectations. With that I am happy to say that this screwdriver exceeded my tempered expectations.

Pros:
Even at its bargain price, this screwdriver comes with a torque clutch and a folding body style. The thick black and orage plastic casing make the screwdriver very tough.Scoffs and scratches are usually not noticeable. The speed is great, sometimes too great, such as when driving a screw into a plastic drywall anchor, where too fast may soften or melt the plastic.

To my surprise, this screwdriver is fairly powerful.I don't know how much more powerful an electric screwdriver needs to be.I've driven 2" long screws into studs with this thing and it has never stalled. In fact, sometimes the screwdriver's power make it difficult to hold without folding it at an angle to get more leverage.

Cons:
The one serious complaint I have is with the torque clutch. With a setting that goes from 0-20 I would have expected a lot of adjustability. But even at its lowest torque setting, the clutch on my screwdriver has rarely slipped.I don't know if this is a problem with my particular unit, but it's very annoying to have to hand-tighten screws in fear of stripping them.

And from the "have the cake and eat it too" department, I wish that the screwdriver is smaller and lighter. It is not huge but it is larger and heavier than I expected.

Buy overall, this is a great screw driver. If the torque clutch had a more effective range of adjustment I would have given it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great screwdriver for daily use
I have just bought my third B&D 3.6 volt screwdriver because I want to have a large shop and wanted to have one available in several areas. This is a very good screwdriver. Not too large but great for getting into smaller places or just to carry around. The power is much better than the 2.6 volt ones.It will handle most every day wood working for the weekend worker. If you want to do heavy duty work move up to the big brother of the 3.6 volt.I like the design, looks and overall quality. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Marginally useable
3 Stars may be a bit much but it's been somewhat useful. I was very hesitant but optimistic. I was hesitant on Black & Decker period. I knew going into this that it would be substandard but thought it must have some merits right?

It's toy-like in construction and operation. The manual states if the beam is weak then you need a new battery. Given 2 new batteries the laser is still pretty darn weak projected within 500sq' and dim lighting. I can't imagine what the engineers consider weak.

My version seams relatively acurate unlike the previous posts experience.

I thought I could save some money and get away with this for a couple of chair rail projects and perhaps some other smaller things throughout the year.

Again, it's marginal but functional. I'm thinking of seriously just returning it for something better. In the long and short run if a tool is better to use, you'll actually want to take it out and use it.

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK!!!!! Beware - will trash your layouts!!!
I bought this laser to put in three-piece baseboard, two piece chair rail and wall frames. In short I'm throwing about $4,500 worth of lumber at my dining room alone (including flooring). Needless to say it must all be level due to the wall frames! If you're off much at all the eye will see it due to the uniform margins (spaces) between the chair rail - frames - baseboards.

After installing most of the baseboards I discovered that the laser was off 5/8" between two of the lasers (it has three). I then set it up and rotated the laser housing at 21' from a wall while measuring each laser at the same spot on the wall. One was 5/8" off from the first, the second was 1/8" off. Accuracy is supposed to be 1/4" @ 100'! I took it back and bought another. I of course checked this one first & found it off by 7/8" @ 22'! I had also cut 5/8" more off one side of the baseboard than necessary to compensate for a settled floor. I'm steamed right? Luckily I'd bought it (them) at a brand new Loews and the manager gave me a Dewalt DW071 for the SAME PRICE. AWSOME! ($149 for a $239 true rotary laser!).

Don't buy this piece of crap! The guy who hung wall cabinets with one must have had a really short run - or he's super lucky and got one that was converged correctly. I hang cabinets too - same deal. Rent one instead - hell rent mine! [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough for most
I bought this thing to install a pretty complicated set of kitchen cabinets. Worked pretty well for that task. This is the onle self leveling laser line generator at this price, so you have to cut it some slack. You will have to decide if you want to pay for self-leveling, accuracy, or ruggedness. You will not get all three in this sub$200 category. Read on-

LASER HEAD- Simple design that sets three 129 degree laser line generators on axis and mounted on a gravity gimble. There as a result of the 3 lasers, there are 3 gaps in the line. Not a showstopper, but nice to know. There are no servos, so there isn't much to break. But, there isn't anything keeping the line steady. It takes a few seconds for the line to settle once disrupted- a pain if you are making "fine" adjustments, as you have to wait for the thing to stop wobbling to see if you are at your mark. Lastly, the laser line varies in thickness from about 1/16" to almost 1/4" at the right/left limit. Not good for accuracy, but adequate for many homeowner jobs.

TRIPOD-The tripod is flimsy, but adaquate for non-professional use a few times a year. When fully extended, it is about as stable as a stout reed. Any movement near it upsets the laser line. Not an issue if you use it on a concrete slab. You extend all but one section by pulling them out until they snap. Once set up, the last extension is a gear driven section that gives you about 8" of "fine" adjustment using a locking knob. Flimsy, but it works.

STORAGE- This is the best thing going for it. The thought and engineering that went into storing the unit is unbelivable. The whole thing folds up and stores in itself in a package no bigger than a large thermos.

I'd look at spending $50 more on a manual level/manual rotate, rugged and crazy accurate Stabila 02123 Laser Spirit Level Kit, or $100 more on a manual leveling/auto rotating, rugged DeWalt DW071KI for any regular use. Both can draw a plumb mark, somthing that the B&D cannot. ... Read more

Maintaining a straight, accurate cut through an entire length of siding, plywood or paneling isn't always easy. The 14.4-volt Black & Decker CS144B FireStorm circular saw is designed to make it so. The FireStorm features an in-line blade design. The handle and blade line up straight to help ensure accurate results. It also boasts Black & Decker's exclusive Sight-Line window, which allows the operator to maintain a clear overhead view of the cut line at all times. The blade itself is thinner than standard circular saw blades, so it removes less material, reducing spoilage and boosting efficiency. With an operating speed of 2,200 rpm and the highest torque in its class (50 in./lbs.), the FireStorm can power through 2x lumber and cut up to 70 2x4s on a single charge. Not bad, especially when you consider the added convenience of having no power cord to get in the way or hold you down. All in all a pretty good value.--Carl Thress ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to a real job
I have used this drill for over 6 months now and I can say that I hate it. Its clutch slips even when screwing into the softest of woods. I have seen a 12v cheap drill run circles around it in the most simple of jobs. I would tell anyone who would listen to go get a Dewalt. My Dewalt 18v can beat anything except for Dewalt's nicer models.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Go Cheap!
The B & D 18v drill w/2batteries was a great buy. And, for over a year, it looked like a wise choice. But then came the problem with the charger -- or one of the batteries.Apparently, a bad battery will kill a charger. So, 2 ruined chargers and one dead (defective?) battery later, I am left with a drill, maybe 1 good battery, but no charger.I'm not taking a chance on another charger. It will likely die as the others -- and that's an answer way too expensive to a problem that probably won't go away. Now I'm doing what I should have done -- pony up a few more $'s for a quality product. And what remains of my B & D drill 'kit' goes to Ebay.

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I bought the 18 volt Firestorm drill kit with two batteries and was initially pleased with the price and performance.

After approximately 14 months one of the batteries and the charger both failed. Now I am stuck with a drill, one battery and no way to charge it unless I buy a new charger. Even then, I still would have only one battery.I have learned that the gears in the drill are plastic and the stalling out I read about in other reviews is a common affliction.

Overall, it has not been a purchase that I am happy with, but when you shop price Vs quality you are at risk.My Dewalt 12 volt runs circles around the B&D 18 volt, so draw your own conclusions. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This kit offers the perfect armload of cordless tools forthe homeowner: drill, circular saw, cut saw, and flashlight, two14.4-volt batteries, a charger, and a case to keep it all in. Thedrill is sturdy and comfortable, has a keyless chuck, andincludes a 24-position clutch for as much torque as you need. Thecut saw is amazingly light, so even the smallest hands will haveno problem keeping control of it. It makes you want to take out awall or prune a tree in the backyard just to exercise your power. The flashlight switches easily from a floodlight to a spot beam. The star of the show, however, is the Firestorm circularsaw. Light, compact, and maneuverable, the tool shows off Black &Decker's patented Sightline window atop the blade guard. A clearwindow offers a straight, bird's-eye view of your cut path tostart and keep you precisely on your cutting line. We liked thissaw especially because it's the first of its kind to come outwith an in-line blade design--meaning the saw's handle is rightbehind the blade. With the line of force directly behind thecutter it's easier to make a true, straight cut. You can't buyall these tools separately for anywhere near the price of thekit, so we think it's a heck of a deal. --Kris Jensen-VanHeste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Battery Charger Problem
I read the other review about the problem with the Black & Decker battery charger.I also had my charger quit on me.I had 2 batteries that came with the drill. I bought another 14.4 volt B&D product so I could continue to use the drill.I quickly found out it wasn't the battery charger that was causing the problem. When I tried to recharge one of the old batteries in my new charger, it quit like the old one. After calling B&D, I was told the problem is with the battery.Once the battery goes, so will the charger. The problem is you never know when your battery is about to go until it is too late and your charger is killed as well.I think I'll cut my losses and try another brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars serves the homeowner well
i've had my set now for at least 2 years. i started with the drill kit and added the sawzall and circular saw.i don't have the flashlight but am keeping my eyes out for cheap deal on one.

the drill works very well. using it for a satellite tv business i've probably put mine through more abuse than the average homeowner would.it has plenty of power for most applications.occasionally i wish it was a bit lighter for finesse stuff but i shouldnt complain.sometimes the drill bit works itself loose and falls out (rare) but that may just be a symptom of having a quicker chuck system which i think is worth it.i did a job in the pouring rain last week knowing full well i could destroy the drill.a couple days later some minor surface rust made the chuck hard to work but after only 2 changes it was back to normal and the drill is as good as ever.

the sawzall is awesome.tons of power.i've used it many times.my favorite application is with the pruning blade on small brush and branches.zips right through it.

the circular saw is ok.it does bind up occasionally more than a corded saw would.the power doesnt feel as strong as sawzall but that could be an illusion.its great for 2x4's, plywood, etc when you just cant use a corded saw (and even sometimes when you could!)

the batteries have held up well i'd say overall.i'm up to 4 of them that i rotate.if i only had one i'm sure it wouldnt be enough.but with 4 i always have a couple ready to go.
i wish the charger was an intelligent rapid charger but hey, if you are buying something that costs about half what other sets cost they have to be saving money somewhere.an optional intelligent rapid charger would be a nice option.

**there is definatley a problem with the chargers burning out after a while.i can't put my finger on a cause but mine were about 2 years old when they both went.i'm wondering if resistance of a dying battery might trip something in the charger making it die.i threw out my first one then it happened to the second a month later leaving me up a creek.i dug around and found an old charger of similar voltage and cut off the base and spliced it on.so far so good.it is definately the plug (ac to dc transformer) that blows, not a short in the base itself which is fine and can be reused if you replace the plug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for the money
I got this set in the Firestorm with 18v of power. So I cannot speak directly for this product, but i can for black and decker.

Really nice for the money, black and decker is made by or in conjunction with dewalt. I have had my set for about two years now and all the tools work well, however, I am starting to notice that the batteries are beginning to die, which is bad because new batteries are quite costly. I think once this set goes, i will but it again. the drill performs well, and boths saws are quite impessive. changing blades and bits are simple ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cordless Drill Mania survivor
Ok Ok , I admit it...I was a cordless drill junkie. At first it was the 12v high, then the 18v rush!!!!

Well, all went well until that dreaded day when the batteries wouldn't hold a charge anymore. That day when I came to gripes (yes , gripes) with forking out $60 to $85 for batteries that also had poor lifetimes written all over them. Let's face it, the drill gets used maybe once a month and spends the rest of the time being charged with the usual "delta V" or , in the cheaper models, "V threshold" charge techniques. The NiCad batteries just sit there, essentially being topped off when the charge declines. This does not make for a long lifetime for this battery chemistry. (those drills are in a box with their dead batteries...too expensive to throw away!!).

That being said, the VPD850 offers a good quality, medium dutydrill that uses inexpensive 3.6v NiCad batteries ($15) that can be used in other BD products. I have found that practically all my heavy work can easily be done using a corded drill (yes, CORDED) with the VPD850 handling the lighter jobs. This is a surprisingly well-designed, good torque 7.2v drill with its only problem being that yo
