Editorial Review

Cordless screwdrivers are nothing new, but this model from DeWalt puts a heavy-duty twist on the idea, and professionals are sure to appreciate it. DeWalt's 7.2-volt has the most powerful battery pack of any cordless screwdriver on the market, without sacrificing compact design. This screwdriver gets into all the tight spots cordless drills can't, and unlike other cordless screwdrivers, it won't leave you wishing for more power once there. Its 80 inch-pounds of torque is beyond even the toughest competing model, and with 16 clutch settings, it's easy to avoid stripping out screws. We also like this tool's quick-change keyless chuck and the extra maneuverability provided by the two-position handle. This is a generous kit, including the driver, a charger, two batteries, two bits, and a tough case. It may not be a revolution, but it does seem to be the first serious cordless screwdriver designed with professionals in mind. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful tool
I love using this driver. Its got plenty of umph for its size.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cordless Screwdriver!!!
I own numerous cordless drills and cordless screwdrivers. This one really fills the gap.Light weight and strong power, for its size.I do a lot of electrical work, which entails drywall repair amongst other things. It has enough power to drive drywall screws in, yet small enough to get into those small places.I wouldn't sheetrock a room but it's great for small jobs.Attaching cabinet hinges, electrical work and driving hex nuts, it works great in all applications.Really beats the pants off of the B&D 3 volt screw drivers. The clutch has excellent range. At the 1 setting you can drive screws into a switch face plate without breaking the plate. The higher numbers correspond almost exactly to the release pressure of my other DeWALT drills.

I knocked off one star due to the poor quick release design.By the way, it hasn't been fixed. When you push the sleeve back, towards the screw driver, it releases the bit.Like others have said, when you bump it or put it in your tool belt the bit can release. It hasn't been a huge problem, just an annoying issue. The problem is that there is a small spring that helps release the bit.So it shoots it across the room.It really doesn't make any sense, since their impact drivers have the release mechanism going in the opposite direction. That said, I would buy this again and recommend it to anyone.Hopefully, some day, DeWALT will act on these reviews. For the price this is a great deal. The batteries have long run times and the charger is the latest 3 mode version which allows you to leave the battery in the charger all the time without damaging the battery. In fact that is what they recommend, keep one in the charger at all times. It charges, conditions and then maintains a trickle charge after that.I wish that I would have purchase this item long ago.Have fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic screwdriver
After using this screwdriver for over a year now, I can agree with the other reviewers--that this is a great tool! I also thought that 7.2v would be wimpy, but it isn't! It beats using a drill to run the screws. Now I carry a cordless drill and this screwdriver in a bag to every task. Highly recommend! ... Read more

Wimpy radios break down on the job site after a few weeks of bumps and knocks. That's why it's time to step up to DeWalt's brawny radio/battery charger with its tough-guy, dune-buggy-style protective roll bar. Winner of Business Week's Silver Award for Consumer Product Design, DeWalt's AM/FM boom box not only rocks the house, it also charges your 7.2- to 18-volt ni-cad batteries in just one hour. Built tough with cushioning rubber stops, DeWalt's radio can take a 6- to 8-foot drop without skipping a beat. The guts are completely weatherproof against rain, snow, dust, and debris, while a silicone coating on the speakers resists cracking and keeps dust from building up. The bendable antenna resists destruction. Is there a downside? Not really. The reception isn't quite what we'd like inside metal or concrete buildings, but that's it. The radio/charger plugs in with a standard cord, and out of reach of a convenient power source, the radio will also run off 7.2- to 18-volt DeWalt batteries. (Note: this radio does not accept DW 9051, 9050, 904, or 9046 batteries.) If CDs and tapes are more your style, plug your Discman or tape deck into the auxiliary port. Is it time to get rid of that beat-up blaster and crank your tunes with a tool that's designed to be job site tough? --Justin Paul ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok radio with charger
My well-intentioned wife bought me the DeWalt radio/charger for Christmas (thinking all my tools were DeWalt). Little does she know I am a Milwaukee loyalist since picking up my first Milwaukee tool. :)

I really liked the DeWalt radio, but when my wife found out almost all my cordless tools were Milwaukee (only DeWalt I have it the 9.6V drill), she said I could exchange the DeWalt radio for the Milwaukee if I wanted. Since I am fairly sentimental, I really wanted to keep the DeWalt. However, I just couldn't resist a "listening competition" between my radio and my neighbor's Milwaukee. Unfortunately for my wife's gift, my sentimental side isn't quite as strong as my audio side. Given the side-by-side comparison, the choice was clear - Milwaukee.

If you really need the DeWalt charging function, then the Milwaukee isn't a choice for you. However, if you are looking primarily for a job-site radio, then go with the Milwaukee instead.Plus the Milwaukee has other nice features like easier to use digital tuning, a stereo/mono switch, longer cord, a 12V outlet, a pass-through plug, and a nice bag to hold various items.

Neither of these radios are going to provide high fidelity sound, but the Milwaukee will come much closer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suitable For Jobsites Only
OK, the audio is pretty scratchy, and the little antenna will not pull in weak, distant stations. But let's remember what this radio/charger was designed to do:provide audible music above the noise level of saws, drills, compressors, etc.For this mission, you will find it more than adequate. The high- treble audio, while perhaps irritating in the living room, is a plus to cut through loud jobsite noise.. and let's remember that this unit, with a built-in charger and drop-proof construction, basically costs little more that a charger itself. No, it will never win any audio awards, and if you need high-fidelity bass response (despite the jobsite noise), then the Milwaukee is your choice (without a charger). But if you have DeWalt cordless tools at the jobsite anyway, and if your priority is getting the work done (as opposed to listening to the finest music), this unit not disappoint you.Just be sure you are within 50 miles of a strong station!

1-0 out of 5 stars Can you spell J U N K?
If you intend to bounce this radio down the street then you picked the right one but for listing purposes forget it! JUNK! I've bought radios at the 99 cent store that have better reception than this battery charger with a roll bar. Your workers willspend more time trying to find a station than working on their project. Unless you're in a situation where you need to defend your life by beating someone to death with this radio... make another choice! ... Read more

If you're looking for a circular saw that's convenient and easyto use above all else, DeWalt's 14.4-volt, 5-3/8-inch circular trim sawis a smart choice. This saw includes a tough metal base plate, a beveladjustment that goes to 50 degrees and can be recalibrated, and adepth-of-cut adjustment that reaches all the way to the blade. Iteasily cuts two-by material in a single pass, and has a left-side bladethat adds visibility. We especially liked the blade-changing mechanism:the shaft-lock button is easy to find and depress, and the hex keystores on the body of the saw, making the blade easy to switch out andreplace. This model also has a fan-cooled motor with replaceablebrushes that will reach 3,000 rpm. The result is a cordless saw thatcuts 25 feet per minute of 1/2-inch plywood. The saw weighs only 6.8pounds, and without a cord to hassle with, you'll find that nothing iseasier to haul around on a job site. Especially for smaller jobs, acordless saw is a serious timesaver. This kit comes with a T-guide; a24-tooth, 6-1/2-inch blade; and a plastic carrying case. --JonathonTudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars no problem with hardwoods
I had to replace my sand and finish hickory floor in the kitchen due to water problems.I used my dewalt 14.4 cordless saw to cut the floor around the cabinets in several areas.I must say I was suprised by this little saw. It's got guts to rip through hickory the way it did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Saw good Batteries Bad
I have my own repair business and use this saw occasionally and it never fails to have dead batteries when I'm ready to use it. No matter when I charged them last, they will not hold a charge for any length of time. Other than that it's a good saw, but I should have stuck with Milwaukee products for heavy usage. Have had no problems with Milwaukees batteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy,convienent
I've had this saw for about 6 yrs. Got it as a gift when it first came out. It's the first saw I reach for . I certainly would'nt recomend it for everyday heavy use contruction. I use it for general purpose cutting. Just finished framing a basement with it.Never took my corded saw on the job. Second battery is a must. Never had any problems. Still using original blade. Highly recomend it for those who like getting away from the mess and tangles of cords. It's lightweight to boot compared to the new 18, 24 volt models that are out. Dave ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best investment ever made
I currently owned and used my Dewalt 14v Cordless drill 983 model.I used this drill a lot when it comes to drilling wood screws/lag screws and there were times when this drill will twist.Although it has a torque setting it's not always consistent. Now ever since I bought the DW056 Impact driver it's a wonderful tool, you don't need to mess with the torque setting and the twisting is completely gone.If you're the type who likes drilling screws into wood or metal this is the tool for you.I'm currently using this driver more than I use the drill when it comes to drilling screws. It's worth the investment!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, good batteries, cannot easily replace brushes
Overall this is a very powerful impact driver and stacks up well against other on the market.

Comfort and ergonomics:
The 90 degree angle is not as comfortable as other angled drivers from Makita, Hitachi and Bosch, although if you do a lot of fastener driving at shoulder level and above (HVAC and cabinet installs) the DeWalt could actually be more comfortable (check out how your wrist angles as you raise it up to shoulder level and beyond). The rubberized grip is very comfortable and it extends to the back of the tool for two handed impact driving. The soft grip covers the front of the handle (below the trigger) too which is good, since typically there is a ridge which joins the two plastic halves of the tools that gives you blisters during extended use.I think DeWalt has put significant thoughts on the user comfort here.

Batteries:
I believe XRP packs are 2.4Ah which is about the top end of Ni-Cd technology.Run time is good and the diagnostic chrager is on-par with other cordless tools. The automatic 'tune-up' mode is a bit of a glorified marketing thing since this is essentially trickle charging, which is done by almost any battery chragers after a fast-charge cycle. This basically tops-up the batteries by passing a small current over 8-10 hours, and is no different whatsoever to the old dumb chargers that perform overnight charging.Have to give DeWalt credit for creative marketing here.

Issues:
No bit holder, you'd think with such a large surface area on top of the large 18V battery they would put in a bit holder. There is also no way for easy replacement of motor brushes, this is a feature that is available on every impact driver from other manufacturers.

5-0 out of 5 stars this impact is great
If you drive alot of screws get a impact they are great. I only use my cordless drill to drill holes now. You can't go wrong with the impact driver. Why didn't I buy this sooner? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate Torque But Too Damn Heavy
I'm a contractor. I lift heavy things all day long, so I'm no 90lb weakling. But, I have to admit, I sold this tool after three months because I found it too heavy and cumbersome for all day use. The torque was adequate, but I find my 12v Porter Cable drill equally up to the task at a fraction of the weight. (Unfortunately, the chuck on the P/C drills are a total piece of crap, which is a whole other story!) Oh, this drill is fine for driving a few screws here and there, or the occasional heavy duty drilling tasks. But due to their weight and size, I now believe 18v drills in general are not versatile enough for professionals to use on a full day-to-day basis. In fact, many other contractors and builders I know have also dumped their 18v+ drills for lighter, smaller 12v and even 9.6v models. Plus, whenever I need a little extra power, I just pull out my 1/2" Milwaukee Hammer Drill, plug it in, and bombs away!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Broke right after warranty expired...
I have owned this DeWalt "18 Volt XRP 1/2" Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill" for barely over 1 year now.I was using a 1" wood bit to drill holes to run cable in my home, and at the end of my project, the drill gave out.The drill motor spins, but it will not engage the bit and gives a racheting sound when run forward or reverse.
This has been a very good drill that I would otherwise rave about, but it died just after the warranty expired, leaving me with a $200 drill that may not be worth fixing. On a better note, DeWalt improved their warranties after 1/2004 to be 3 years instead of 1.But for me, I can only give it 3 stars since it broke JUST AFTER the 1 year warranty.I am disgusted right now & will have to consider a different company (Bosch) if I cannot get this fixed under warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality control!
I've bought the drill through a hardware store. The first one got a stuck speed gear as described by other reviewers. So I exchanged for a second one. The second drill has excessive sparks in the motor and I returned it without hesitation. I'm going to try the Milwaukee as suggested by others. ... Read more

Editorial Review

These days, almost all professionals and do-it-yourselfers rely on a cordless drill/driver--and for good reason. Take the DeWalt 14.4-volt 3/8-inch cordless compact drill/driver kit. It features a 3/8-inch keyless ratcheting chuck, two gear settings (low torque/high speed and high torque/low speed), and a variable speed trigger switch with electric brake. Powered by a DeWalt-built Series 3000 motor, the unit delivers 350 in./lbs. of maximum torque and speeds of 0-400 and 0-1,400 rpm. An 18-position clutch makes it easy to match the drill's torque setting to the precise application for even better results. Even with all its power, the DeWalt drill/driver is still comfortable to hold and offers good overall control. An all-metal 5-5-5 planetary gear transmission and solid construction throughout help to ensure a longer tool life, another definite plus for this hard-working performer.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid light weight drill
I bought this drill at lowes for $75.00 with 2 batteries and case. At 4.2 lbs it feels like a feather compared to my monster 18v Bosch hammerdrill(6.7 lb). It seems to have all of the power I need, and it can handle the bigger bits.It is a real arm
saver.
Dewalts new compact series drill has more power than the 928,but also weighs several ounces more. The 928 is the most comfortable drill I have ever used.
I have found that the 928 has several limitations.
1. Limited runtime, while the 928 can use the big bits,it can't drill nearly as many holes as my 18v Bosch, this would probably apply to most 14.4v drills.
2. Two sleve chuck,Single sleeve is better.
3. Poor finish, The seam between the two body halves, are poorly finished, and are irratating in the handle area. I have noticed this on many of Dewalts Mexican made tools. My bosch on the on the other hand the body is perfectly finished.
All in all,it is a fine drill,if you can get one at a good price(like I did). Remember,The current drill goes for about $170.00 in most stores,I only paid $75.00. I have learned that when at home depot or lowes, always to check the return rack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade
This is a replacement for my old 9.6V.Did not want to go up in voltage because of the balance and wieght of my 9.6V.Wrong answer.
The DW928 is well balanced and the weight is not noticable. The speed switch works easily. Which is a great improvement in the cordless line. Others i have looked at were hard to move. Many more clutch settings over my old one.
Battery life is unreal.Really gave it a workout.Good Job DeWalt
I would highly recommend this drill if 14 Volt is your game.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very powerful drill!
When I began looking around for a replacement for my 9.6v DeWalt cordless drill, I assumed I would be buying a 12v DeWalt. My 9.6v almost always had the power to do what I asked of it, so 12v seemed the next logical step. Then I found this 14.4v drill for an incredible price at a day-after-Thanksgiving sale (Lowes). In fact, the 99 bucks I paid for this drill is less that what I paid for my 9.6v 8+ years ago!

After using this drill on a couple of projects I can say two things with all honesty.First of all this drill is not overly heavy (I was worried about that), and second, it has power to spare.I suspect that the torque this drill provides is overkill for driving screws in most applications - afterall I was happy with the screw driving abilities of my 9.6v.However, it is very nice to have that torque when you are drilling through wood with big bits.

Basically, this drill is a very strong performer. The charger is well made, I have had no problems with it or the batteries, and the case is well made.If you have need for this kind of power or you find a good deal like I did, I highly recommend that you make this purchase! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The tool man
Well, I'm a hobbiest, in fact, my neighbor, a real mountain man who calls me a sissyman since unlike him, who was actually born with a hammer and chisel in hand, I am in the process of learning the craft of wood work. I would like to at least imagine with great success (I was a metal worker before). I've never been able to cut a straight line or drill a hole without travel.

This drill has been wonderful for me. In fact, I've purchased the 18v 5.XX inche circular as well as the 18V Jig and a mitre saw. When I was younger, I often purchased and used Black & Decker. I found that for a newcomer to wood working these other tools were quite clumsy. The Dewalt tools on the other hand, I would imagine are definately the top of the line for people like me. This drill is heavy enough to help hold the bit still without travel and has enough power to cut the most stubborn surfaces.

Recently while using a rather large hole saw to cut an openning in the back of a set of shelves for cabling, I was using my 12V Dewalt and the hole saw regularly got caught and the drill nearly busted my wrist. When I broke out this drill, although the jam could still occur, the torque let the bit keep moving without missing a beat.

Also, I no longer use a stone cutter to break bricks. Recently, I drilled approximately 500 holes in 4 inche thick bricks and using the back side of my axe snapped them in peices. Later I moved on to drilling holes into the concrete foundation of my house for mounting my new deck. The hammer drill really shined. I can't wait until someone else lets me drill into their house as well :)

I highly recommend this tool for people like myself that have spent so much time in front of computers that we can no longer use a pen and drawing a straight line without an orthagonal feature is unheard of. Don't hesitate to buy this monster (Unless the 12v is preferable since it's easier to hide from your wife).

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy for hammerdrill feature
This was a real disappointment to a loyal DeWalt user. This is nowhere near what you are looking for if you are going to be drilling into masonry, especially concrete. And if you are not, why are you buying this instead of the drill/driver model (which I own and love)? The good: a great redesign of the keyless chuck. The bad: does not have the power for even the most basic work you'll do (drilling a 3/16" hole a couple inches into a tough concrete slab). I cut my teeth on a real heavy-duty hammer drill (worth at least twice the price, I admit), which I had to always borrow. Bought this DeWalt model, and went through several bits, cursing the bits. Worried, I went back and borrowed the real tool, stuck in one of the bits I'd been cursing, and...zip zip zip, right through the material. If you buy this thinking you're getting a heavy-duty hammerdrill, you will be disappointed. Unfortunately, a true heavy-duty hammerdrill is going to run you twice what this does. No free rides. I had to learn the hard way what the extra money buys you; hopefully I've saved you a lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill and it's NOT defective
I've owned this drill for 3 years. The drill and batteries have worked flawlessly. The clutch on this drill does work a little differently than on most drills. This drill is for heavy duty work and not for finesse work.If you are going to install cabinets then buy a 2 speed DeWALT model.Because of the 3 speeds the clutch is very tight on the first gear and gradually the scale of retention lessens as you go up in gears. For example:1st gear on clutch setting 1 will drive a screw into a 2X4.In 2nd gear it would take setting 5 and in 3rd you would be at about 10.DeWALT recommends that if you need a light touch, just increase to 2nd gear. You might ask, why would I want this drill?Lots of torque, speed and the hammerdrill function.Think of the gears and clutch like a 21 speed bike. Not only do you change the gears on the rear wheel but you change your torque with the large gears on the front set of gears too.More options for better overall performance.

First lets talk about the speed. At 2000 RPM this drill is faster than most electric drills.I find that I use this high speed setting a great deal when drilling.Torque.Lots of torque for driving big bits through wood or other materials.2nd gear is great for driving wood screws fast.I built a 12x12 deck with 2x4s, driving all 300 screws in second gear and 2 batteries. What I really like is the hammerdrill function. This is used for drilling in cement or stucco.I haverecently used this to drill 4, 1/2 inch wide holes in our sidewalk to mount a mail box.It did a great job and the cement was 30 years old.Hard nasty stuff and this thing cut right through it.Or as fast as you can drill through cement. Use windex to keep the bit cool. The suds will pull the loose material out. I have also used it numerous times to drill into the walls around my house and into the cement in my garage. This is a tough drill and really takes a beating.Make sure when you are doing high torque jobs you attach the included extra handle or you will be spinning around like Wiley Coyote.

If you own this drill you will almost remove any reason to own an electric drill.I only use my corded drill for mixing cement and drywall mud. This is a tough drill for tough jobs.Have fun. ... Read more

A drill/driver is a great tool, but not for every application, unless of course you consider stripped screws part of the charm of doing it yourself. Some jobs simply need the added muscle only an impact driver can provide, and the 14.4-volt cordless DeWalt DW054K-2 is one impact driver worth a look. At first glance, the DeWalt driver looks a little weak. After all, it measures only 6-1/2 inches and weighs just 4.1 pounds. But don't let appearances fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a champ. The driver produces an amazing 1,150 in./lbs. of maximum torque, making it ideal for even the toughest jobs and the tightest applications, where comparable drivers simply couldn't reach. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and an all-metal quick release chuck that accepts 1/4-inch hex shank bits. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than Makita 12v for my use
I tried a 12v Makita impact driver after reading the reviews. It was a revelation, but the angled handle was awkward and a little painful to use at arm's length. The DeWalt handle is 90 degrees to the motor and is easier to use for me.The Dewalt trigger isn't quite as sensitive as the Makita, but it's very good. The 1150 inch-pounds (vs 867 for Makita 12v) seems just right....it spins longer at high speed before the impact starts, so long screws drive quite a bit quicker. The Makita 12v is definitely more controllable and has a the ultimate variable trigger, but I can drive both 6 x 3/4" wood screws in cabinet hinges and sink 4" deck screws out of sight in anything with the DeWalt. It does the formerly impossible.I smile every time pick it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but could be improved
I tried three David White Mark 4 laser devices before I bought the DeWalt. Two of the Mark 4's had indistinct oval blobs instead of sharp dots, the third actually had a broken window. The dot produced by the DeWalt DW082K is far superior. It has a small cross with a sharp, bright dot in the center. It works great, but could use some improvement in the dampening system.A slight movement of the unit causes the beam to deflect wildly for several seconds before completely stopping.I marked spots on the floor and ceiling as indicated by the laser dots.I then rotated the DW082K in 90 degree increments for the full 360 degrees. Each time, the laser dots exactly covered the marked spots.I concluded that it is very accurate, at least for my use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything but the circular saw!
My favorite tool out of this combo is the 18V drill. It is built to last and has some serious torque to it that comes in handy when you're slamming lag bolts through a 2X4 into concrete! But I also am impressed with all the other tools in the kit. The cordless reciprocating saw sees more action than my plug in saw simply because of the convenience of not having a get-caught-on-everything extention cord getting in my way. The flexible floodlight comes in handy when you need some light but don't have any hands left to hold a flashlight while you're working. It's bright and can be set up in just about any position to illuminate your workspace. The convenience of having a wireless jigsaw comes in quite handy too, especially when you're cutting a lot of angles and curves... There's no wire getting in your cutting path! Now I get to the circular saw... It's got good power to it, but it definitely doesn't see as much action as my plug-in circular saw. Sure it'll cut a 5/8" sheet of plywood, but it splinters the wood and doesn't rip through as fast as a good old plug-in circular saw. If there's something small to cut that doesn't necessarily need a clean cut (free of splinters), then this saw will do, but it simply doesn't cut clean enough for my tastes. Back panels on lower kitchen cabinets could be cut with this saw, but when it comes to making a straight cut at length, you really are better off using a plug-in circular. So if you are looking for a combo kit, I'd recommend getting one with everything this kit has but without the circular saw! Save your money on that portion of the kit and buy a DeWalt plug-in to finish off your combo... Oh, and the 18V battery lasts a good long time and will get you through most projects without a recharge!

My partner and I are very busy general contractors in Los Angeles County, CA. Our company specializes in repair and renovation. Recently we switched from another brand to "test" the Dewalt products. We purchased two box sets. We literally beat the He** out these tools. We abused them. They seemed to enjoy it. The drill damn near broke my wrist when I decided to try it out as a torque wrench. The saw cuts double stack 5/8 ply (thats two sheets) like paper, over and over. The batteries have unbelievable life (we burn them non-stop). No panzy set down, we deliberately drop/toss the tools from the knee. They are professional grade, no-nonsense machines. For dirt loving, lumber chewing contractors or the weekend remodeler, these tools ROCK!

Way to go Dewalt. You've earned our dollars, and more importantly, our respect. Keep em' coming and we promise to beat them up.

If you're looking for a circular saw that's convenient and easyto use above all else, DeWalt's 8-volt, 6-1/2-inch circular model is asmart choice. This saw features an alloy steel base plate, a beveladjustment that goes to 50 degrees and can be recalibrated, and adepth-of-cut adjustment that reaches all the way to the blade. Iteasily cuts two-by material at a 45-degree bevel in a single pass, andhas a left-side blade that adds visibility. We especially liked theblade-changing mechanism--the shaft-lock button is easy to find anddepress, and the hex key stores on the body of the saw, making theblade easy to switch out and replace. This model also has a powerfulfan-cooled motor with replaceable brushes that reach 3,700 rpm. Theresult is a saw that can cut 35 feet per minute of 1/2-inch plywood. Itweighs only 8.4 pounds, and--without a cord to hassle with--you'll findthat nothing is easier to haul around on a job site. A cordless saw isa serious timesaver, especially for smaller jobs, when dealing with acord can be a real hassle. This kit comes with a T-guide; a 16-tooth,6-1/2-inch blade; and a plastic carrying case. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this saw!
I bought this saw to cut down sheets of plywood before bringing them into the bsmt where there is a table saw.I've had no problem with the battery and love the freedom of throwing it into the back of a vehicle in case wood at the lumberyard is too long. It's weight makes it easy to handle and while I can see an extra battery might be nice, it's been a joy to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good worker.
I have been cutting 2x8s and it does a great job.Especially nice is being able to cut thru the 2*8 at a 45 angel. The blade lock makes changing the blade easy.

The safety latch seems a bit awkward. One has to push the button in before pulling the trigger. For me,the button is in the wrong place and would be easier to push down rather than in. But this is a minor problem.

I haven't used the saw enough to stress test the battery

4-0 out of 5 stars Cordless isn't acceptable for occassional use
The saw is well made and easy to use except for the trigger.I find it difficult to press the safety and the trigger at the same time.Especially when cutting at an odd angle.

I have used it for framing and plywood. The guide is very easy to use and keeps a good straight line.It won't cut completely through a 2x4 at 45 degrees so you'll have to flip the board over and cut from the other side.

However, this is not a saw that is acceptable for occassional use.If the battery is not properly discharged and recharged it will quickly become a doorstop.Ask yourself how often you are really going to use the saw.If it isn't at least once a month then a corded saw would be cheaper.Otherwise you'll be replacing the battery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressed
This tool really amazed me. I thought it would be a toy but to my suprise it could handle just about any task. When it was broken by another worker, in a pinch I bought a Milwaukee.Talk about a joke. No battery life.No power to speak of.Milwaukee should stick to making corded tools because they will never compare with the DeWalt.I got a quick $250.00 lesson with the Milwaukee and ordered another DeWalt. Now to find someone who will take the Milwaukee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent power for a cordless.
Another reviewer mentioned that he only got 90 to 120 seconds of cutting time with his saw.I got much better performance.Right after pulling it out of the box, the included battery needed charging, so I borrowed a 5 year old, partially discharged 18 volt battery from our Dewalt cordless drill and proceeded to cut away 14: 2x6 roof rafters, 3: 2x8 rafters, the soffit and fascia, then a few 4" diameter saplings and various branches from nearby maple trees. The battery was still going strong. With a sharp blade, this tool will melt through 2" lumber. It's seems to cut more quiclky than my old Milwaukee Sawsall, but it is not as smooth and vibration free as the new Makita reciprocating saw (which is AC).This is a great tool that will get far more use than just for demolition around our house.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anothergood light duty saw
Ahhh yes DeWalt has a cordless reciprocating saw. This tool is ideal for drywall, metal stud and thin steel cutting. It is perfect for the tool line up.Keyless clamp make blade changing easy and allow you to get right back to work.Cordless is convenience but not all powerfull. For heavy long jobs the corded dewalt and milwaukee reciprocating saws will get the job done.I give this 5 stars for light duty (drywall, metal and wood studs, thin steel, plywood etc.) but only 2.5 for long lasting work. ... Here's a great collection of DeWalt tools at a really amazing price and they all use the same 18-volt batteries. The 1/2-inch adjustable clutch drill/driver/hammer drill's high-torque motor delivers 450 inch/pounds of torque for drilling with large bits and driving large-shank screws with no worries of lock-up because the third speed is 38 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 2,000 rpm. The chuck's carbide jaws won't let go of even the smallest bit. The DW938 reciprocating saw has nice ergonomics--good balance, a comfortable grip, and it's not unwieldy, even with the battery attached. We particularly like the keyless blade clamp that lets you change blades without touching the blade or reciprocating shaft. The 6-1/2-inch circular saw is one of favorites for its light weight, power and ease. You can see the blade on the left side, so you've got great cutting-line visibility. Want to bevel? No problem. And it's even got a rip fence. The impact driver is only 6-1/2 inches long, but it delivers 1,600 in-lbs of max torque; its heavy-duty impacting mechanism directs torque to the fastener without kickback. Its fits into places other impact drivers can't and is what you need for automotive work, farm machinery or anywhere else you need super torque. The flex-neck flashlight's wide-angle beam is brighter than a traditional flashlight, and you'll find all kinds of uses for it. A nice touch we appreciate is the spare Xenon bulb, so you'll never be in the dark. All together, quite a neat deal.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

If you're looking to add a solid, reliable cordless impact wrench to your tool crib, the heavy-duty, 3/8-inch, DeWalt DW051K-2 12-volt cordless impact wrench might be worth considering. This mid-level impact wrench has everything you'll need to loosen and tighten tough bolts and drive fasteners through metal, concrete and wood surfaces. Plus, it's small enough (6-1/2 inches long and 3.5 pounds) to get into places larger units with comparable features simply cannot reach. But don't let its size fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a workhorse. The wrench churns out a whopping 1,200 in./lbs. of maximum torque with speeds ranging from 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 3/8-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease. 4-0 out of 5 stars I'll save the fifth star for later...
Having used many different brands of cordless drill/drivers over the past 15 years, I was curious about this new wave of impact drivers.I had the chance to use this DeWalt driver (a friend's) and I can report that I was extremely impressed with it.In all fairness, this isn't a comparison since I have never used any of the competitor's impact drivers, but the DeWalt was more than I thought it would be.

Power - there's all you would ever want here.I was driving 3" screws into treated lumber and quickly noticed two things. The driver didn't hesitate while driving the screws home and compared to my standard drill/driver I had to apply much less pressure on the rear of the gun to keep the bit from slipping on the screw head.

Size/Weight - You don't notice how much a good drill/driver weighs until you use something like this that is more powerful and yet weighs less.Though the size is tiny compared to what I am used to, it doesn't feel unnaturally so.

Value - though this is probably the best tool I have ever used to drive a screw, it is expensive so the vaulue per dollar isn't what it could be.If I were starting from scratch on a collection of tools, I would think seriously about this one.As it is, I already have two DeWalt drill/drivers and will probably not justify replacing them at this cost.

Overall, this is a great tool that I feel justifies the impact driver craze that is currently going on.If you build decks for a living, run to buy one of these. If you are a weekend warrior, get more bang for your buck by getting a good deal on a 12-14.4 volt drill/driver instead...

5-0 out of 5 stars great product!!!
This is a great buy and trust me you wont find a better price.I love this tool, it saves me a lot of time at work and is actually really lite.I know that almost every technician i work with at my dealership uses this tool and they all love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool
I am a professional mechanic and have used many cordless impact drivers. This is the best I have run across. I wish it was 14.4 volt so it would use the same batteries as drill but that is my only complaint. Plenty of power will break non impact sockets and small bolts beware. Lightweight and powerful. I will buy 18volt 1/2" impact in future when funds allow.
My recomendation BUY IT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No need for cords, unless you want them....
I have the entire 24V kit, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the AC/DC converter feature, so that when the uncommon dead battery situation happens, you're not left without power. DeWalt: How about a 24V jig saw, plate jointer, miter saw and handheld planer? I'll buy them whenever they come out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a burning torch
I cut a 3.5" solid hardened steel blower shaft in half with this saw with one blade, faster than if I hauled a oxy/act rig up to the roof, or ran around trying to tap off power somewhere for a corded saw. This saw never stalled once and still had plenty of power left in it. This is one heck of a time and energy saver for me. Believe it from me, I'm a Commercial Air Conditioning Repairman.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I know so-far about this new saw
Having just bought the older 24v Dewalt recip saw, I was curious to see whether I should return and upgrade for the new model.I haven't tried this new saw yet, but here's what I know.

Firstly, Dewalt assured me that the saw itself has changed very little from the old model. That being said, this saw is a winner! This thing has a durable look & feel, torque, stroke, etc. that put the 18 v line to shame. It cuts fast and accurately.Though heavier than most cordelss models, it is very well balanced when it matters most... cutting.

The batteries and charger are the main updates.
1. The new kit comes with two batts... the old kit had one.
2. The new batteries are ~2.4 amp hrs, vs. 1.7 with the old (longer run-time).
3. The fans supposedly extend the life-cycle of the saw.

This being said, if I was just shopping for a Dewalt recip, I would buy the new kit. This is especially true if I didn't have additional 24v Dewalt tools or additional batteries. Two batteries are definately better than one. If, however, you already have some 24v tools... the reconditioned kit might be a good value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the buck anywhere
I purchased this drill (actually i think an older version of the same one) used in 2001 and have abused it in every way possible since then. In my job installing car stereo's we go through an average of 2-3 batteries per day and have tried every brand out, but the DeWalt drills have taken far more abuse than any of them.

Mine i have even been running 14.4v batteries in for years and the motor has taken it fine, no smell's, funny sounds or anything else. I have dropped it from 10+ ft with no issues on numerous times. Ive even taken to throwing it on the concrete just to show people how it just will not break. Simply amazes me.

People complain about the battery life as compared to some other drills. This makes no sense to me since ive been a long time fan of Makita, have owned Makita, Black and decker firestorm, porter cable and milwaukee drills and none of them have the battery life of the DeWalt. A fellow installer has been kicking himself because his makita 12v light will run for about 15 mins on a fresh battery while mine will run for 2+hours.

Now in my full time job as a maintenance man at a hospital we have swapped over exclusively to DeWalt drills, replacing porter cable, craftsman and bosch drills.

I am sold on these drills and the abuse that they take and now own 3 of them, one made in 1997, one in 2000, and the other in 2001 and all 3 of them are still alive and kicking, running off of the original batteries no less with no batteries having died yet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill, Bad Battery Performance
I love the balance, torque (and adjustability), low and high speed settings...but the battery life (both the length they hold a charge and the number of charges they take before end of life) pales in comparison to my old (non XR) DeWalt 12 V cordless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but a few problems
Overall I like this drill but there are 2 problems that would make me consider buying another DeWalt drill. First after about 3 years of very minimal use both batteries have died, and of course the price of one battery is close to half the price of the entire drill purchased new. The second problem is the terrible balance of the drill, It can stand up on its own, but add quick change chuck and it cant even stand on its own. So...........In hindsight I wish I had bought th Makita.

Editorial Review

All right-angle drill drivers are not the same. Sure, they get the same job done--but it’s how easy the tool makes the job that sets the brands apart. This DeWalt model that comes with our highest recommendation. Powered by DeWalt’s system of nice, compact 14.4-volt batteries, the tool boasts a tight, thoughtful design. The best feature, we think, is what DeWalt calls its "multi-grip trigger." The trigger is as long as your little finger, and the lower section of handle is textured for a sturdy grip, allowing you to get the tool up into a tight workspace with an extended reach that the other brands don’t offer. Another advantage, if you have smaller hands: the easy-to-grip battery is slides on and off easily. Two speed ranges, 0 to 400 and 0-1,250 rpm, offer you lots of applications. The drill is tough enough for the pro and feature-friendly enough for the do-it-yourselfer--we can envision this making quick work of a ducting project at home or on the job.Installing drawer guides in a case piece? No problem with this DeWalt. It can even handle larger bits and fasteners with its 210 inch-pounds ofmaximum torque. Two batteries, a one-hour charger, and a hard-plastic carrying case round out a great package. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly useful tool
I love this drill! It was absolutely invaluable for working in the tight angles and narrow spaces I encountered during an extensive kitchen remodel I completed this last summer. I find lots of other uses as an avid woodworker too. Although DeWalt makes an 18-volt version my regular drill/driver has interchangeable power packs for this model. The 14.4-volt batteries last plenty long, have sufficient power for my needs, and recharge quickly. It comes with two batteries so I haven't had any downtime. I found the variable speeds easy to control with the "multi-grip" trigger. The keyless chuck is very convenient and the two clutch settings are essential for switching between drilling/driving applications. Set properly, it always had enough torque for either job. It is very ergonomic with great weight and balance: while it is much easier to control with two hands, it can be used with only one in a pinch (at least for drilling, anyway).

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly right
This drill is a great combination of size & power.I use it for all kinds of stuff.Hogging through studs for electrical, pocket drilling in tight spaces, driving screws, etc.

The more I use it the more I like it.I considered the 9.6v makita but was concerned that it wouldn't have the staying power to drill lots of holes through studs (this was the case for the non standard 9.6v makita). Also I wanted the slow speed this drill provides.

Eventhough this drill was a bit pricy I am glad I choose it.It is serving me quite well.

I only wish it had a clutch for driving screws. This keeps me from giving it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did we not buy this sooner!
We install a lot of kitchens, this pays for its self when putting in a 12" wide or less cabinet, trying to secure the face frames. If you can justify it the budget it is well worth it! Please its not t tool you use lots and lots, so you get two 14.4V batteries that interchange with your other Dewalt tools! ... Read more

The DeWalt cordless 18-volt variable-speed jig saw is built with operator convenience in mind. Start with a keyless shoe that slides back and forth for cutting flush in tight spaces. Add to that a comfortable grip, which provides greater stability and control. Throw in clear markings every 15 degrees left and right of center that make it easy to find just the right angle for the job. Put it all together, and what you get is a pretty handy jig saw with a surprising amount of power (up to 2,000 spm) for a cordless. The unit weighs just 7.3 pounds and is easy to operate. Two orbital settings provide quicker, more accurate cuts in softer materials such as plastic and wood, while a straight-line setting is ideal for cutting metal and other hard surfaces. A removable plastic shoe cover protects easily scratched surfaces and locks securely into place for easy use, while a built-in dust blower clears debris ahead of the cut for better visibility. All in all, an impressive performer.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and powerful performer - but not terribly straight
I'm reviewing the DeWalt European 18v version (ELU) of this jig saw and I must say that it is truly a versatile and very powerful cordless jig saw but the trade-off, in my opinion, is that you can't ask this particular saw to do what -- say a Bosch 1584AVS -- corded jig saw can do. If you can live with certain limitations (a pronounced tendency to veer or wander especially if you try to follow a guide or push it along, an almost annoying plastic cutting guide that vibrates off repeatedly in operation, limited cutting power especially in thick materials like MDF, and some above-average vibration in thinner materials) then this jig saw warrants a much closer look. I'm a firm believer in buying items that fulfill their intended purpose, i.e. don't try to train a cat to bark like a dog, and so the portability, convenience and overall power more than offset this saw's shortcomings. If you a serious jig saw user, then you really should opt for a corded model with more power and better overall performance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tranny job
Saw arrived 4 PM Friday. Tried Sat. AM. Shipped back Monday PM. Dewalt said it had a misaligned transmission. It's corded counterpart has been my pleasure. This made all of 1" of cut before I detected a problem. The saw would not run beside a cutting guide. The blade was not parallel to the shoe. This is carelessness by Dewalt. It should not have been shipped in such a state. When I got home from UPS I found an e-mail from Amazon telling me that they had already shipped a replacement. I look forward to what I hope will be a sound, well aligned saw. It's corded brother is.
About 3 weeks later:
The replacement saw arrived quickly. Like the first saw, it is nice to use. But, like the first saw, the blade was set at an angle to the axis of the saw. Clearly this is not Amazons fault. They shipped a new saw upon reciept of my return request. Perhaps they got a bad lot. As they had replaced this item once, I was not about to dump it back on them. I called DeWalt. They seem to hire the cheapest kid they can find. He was not totally unknowledgeable, and was polite and sympathetic. All he could offer was to suggest that I contact the warranty center. When I looked them up on the net I found an old friend that was nearby and factory certified. He got the job & will do it under warranty at no cost to me. But I'll be waiting a couple weeks to get it back. He agreed that there was no excuse for the misalignment. The saw has weaknesses, as described in other reviews. But, it is stable in the cut, has good power, is easy to guide and a wonderful convienence. I used it for a few days before taking it to the shop. If you never nail down a cutting guide to deal with a problem spot or clamp one to sheet goods, then, you will not notice the misalignment. I've not lost a blade to pull out on this {only a few days of use} nor on my corded version of the same saw. The locking system is a little clumsy. The convience of tool free blade change is worth the trouble caused by the lack of clearance when you pull up the "crank". The big problem is that it is hard to get a good grip on the "crank" to be able to pull up hard enough to get the blade well locked in. The angle adjustment on the shoe could be improved with a bit of thought. This saw is basically a winner. DeWalt just got sloppy at the finish. This is intended as a wake up call to them. If you have such problems I hope you will write a letter of complaint to help refocus their attention on quality, which does include attention to detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Use Carefully
The sole plate of this unit has a poor locking mechanism. The lever releases randomly and the angle of cut can change in the middle of the job.The thicker the wood, the more the damage to the item you are working on.A Rube Goldberg mod
