3-0 out of 5 stars Ergonomic design but needs more power
It's a well-designed drill that fits well in your hand and feels very balanced. It's weight is just right, and the quality is very high. However, it needs more power when drilling into stud.I'd recommend that you go for the 18v instead. As for the flashlight, it's a piece of junk and the lightbulb burnt out after two months.Instead of buying the exorbitant replacement bulbs, ditch the flashlight and buy a 4-LED model that needs no replacement of bulbs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hello!! Its a consumer drill!
People are amazing. This drill is not made for hard core pro use!Its a good home and small shop drill. What do you expect for 90 bucks.Go spend pro money for a pro drill, and thats what you'll get. This drill will do anything a home owner needs or a weekend wood worker.I've never driven a #12 3 inch deck screw into a bookcase and don't know why I would. Its a good tool for the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars "HARD CORE DRILLING"
As a plumbing contractor, we put these cordless drill`s to the test.Because i had heard good thing`s about hitachi i purchased 3 of their cordless 14.4 drill`s(1 hammerdrill, 2 regular drill`s w/ flashlights). I received 2 good months usage on the flashlight`s before wireing problem`s came up. The hammerdrill lasted almost a year and we got 6 months out of the regular drill`s. The connectors that touch the battery leads failed on them all. They became quickly weaker as they were charged. We have found that other brand name drill`s are definitly more reliable. ... Editorial Review

We admit it, we think this is the coolest-looking tool we've seen. Its curves just make you want to pick it up, and once you give in, you'll just say ahhhh. It fits the hand like a dream, but that's only the beginning. It leads its class in two categories—-torque and compactness, a wonderful combination. The power is incredible for a 12-volt tool, but we don't expect less from Hitachi. Of course, they've positioned the forward-reverse switch exactly where we want it. And we especially like the convenient one-touch belt clip that keeps this dynamo close at hand. You will not be disappointed.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
This tool would be a great addition to anyone's tool collection. As a woodworking hobbiest I recently purchased this item out of curiousity not necessity, for I already have two cordless drill motors and a corded one. What caught my attention was the tools specifications on torque. The torque rating was twice what my Bosch Brute 18 volt cordless model could offer.I recently used it to drive in lag bolts while mounting garage door opener brakets to the joists in my garage. This little charm drove these bolts in without a problem. In addition to that, I've used it to drive in screws where my other drill motors had problems. It was a life saver. The only issue I have with this tools is the ugly color. Why couldn't Hitachi have designed something that looked a little more subdued???Aside from this, I cannot find any fault with this impact driver.I would highly reccommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DEAL FOR MONEY
My dad got my drill in the mail before I could get it from him.he didn't want to give it back.Used with many project in building our home and on the farm.Battery pack lasts forever compared to other drivers.Thing is noisy as heck when the impact driver kicks in, but the power is amazing!Would recommend to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars First driver I've owned.
The Hitachi driver was a pleasant surprise. It's amazing how this 12V tool can drive the screws home. The tool is comfortable to hold, powerful and well built. I was slightly disappointed in the battery life, however this really isn't an issue as the second battery charges by the time the one in the tool runs out of gas. So there is no down time waiting on batteries to charge. In addition to the Hitachi driver, I own the 10 inch compound/sliding miter saw w/laser which has been a great investment after a purchase in which I did my homework. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled Value
For the price, this 12-volt cordless drill by Hitachi cannot be matched. It is reliable, durable, lightweight, comfortable in its use, and the battery life is well above average.

I am a professional auto mechanic, and use it on a daily basis as a light-duty electric nut driver. My only criticism is that the self-locking chuck is too quick to release when challenged by the laws of physics...which was easily cured by an extra twist with a pair of channel locks.

I use an 18-volt Ryobi for most of my home projects, and the 12-volt Hitachi is a far superior tool, and at considerably less expense - more compact, superior battery life, and lighter weight give it a clear advantage over the heavier, bulkier Ryobi.

This tool is a must for non-professional home-improvement types, and professionals may be surprised by the overall versatility and usability of this tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, solid little drill.
Weight and price lured me to this drill. I work in a cabinet shop and found the 18 volt yellow and 14.4 volt red drills the other blokes had a bit bulky and heavy for all-day use (plus, I have access to their drills and our electric ones, as well). For screw and glue assembly this drill is a gem--it delivers just enough torque to sink everything home and won't break the heads off coarse drywall screws. Pre-drilling / Countersinking operations take a little longer than with more powerful models (and since time is money, I often keep a second, more powerful drill handy for the pre-drilling. I've drilled pocket holes with this Hitachi from time to time, but prefer to use an electric drill (or a heavy cordless drill on a jobsite) with the Kreg jig. I've also drilled dowel holes in 1 3/4 Mahogany with this drill--not without some effort, though. The light weight and compact size of this drill have come in handy for all of us--several corners in a recent kitchen remodel could only be reached with this drill, not with the larger cordless units.

My purchase of this drill prompted one shop member to purchase an even lighter 9.6 volt yellow brand. Initial impressions are that the two are about equal. One disadvantage to the yellow 9.6 volt is that it cannot be stood upright on its base. Since each falls in the same price range, I'd recommend the Hitachi for this one reason.

Battery expenditure is fairly frequent, and perhaps a negative for some reviewers / readers. But keeping the spare in the charger has never left me without juice. Just remember to take the charger to the job site!

I can't comment yet on the longevity of the batteries (still going strong after a year of daily use). When they do finally die, I'll be able to get two for 70 bucks by purchasing another drill! (not bad, since some brands charge 70 bucks for one battery alone). Also worth noting is that Hitachi makes a 12 volt hammer drill that uses the same batteries.

I really don't use the flashlight, but it is nifty in that the head angles and it is free-standing. Rather, I use the flashlight's space in the case for bits and so on The case, by the way, is not as rugged as other brands (especially the sliding hinges). My assumption is that Hitachi has eliminated the frills of a great case to keep the price low.

For the price and performance, this little Hitachi is a great buy. It probably all a home do-it-yourselfer needs, and again, it works for 90% of the jobs in the shop. It has taken some abuse and suffered some job site falls, but has not been damaged. Yes, eventually, I will be buying a second, heavier duty drill--probably the red 14.4 workhorse (now that it has been beefed up to well over 400 lbs. of torque), but a second drill will simply complement, not retire this drill. I highly recommend this little Hitachi. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One impressive little impact wrench
I love this little impact wrench, very light and extremely powerful. I have tested it on wheel lug nuts tightened up to 190 ft. lbs., and to my surprise, it is able to crack the lug nut free after a few seconds. It does sound like it is struggling to crack the lug nut loose, but hey, 190 ft. lbs. is already way beyond the 147 ft. lbs. specification limit. I love the variable speed and electric brake, it is able to turn even at slightly above zero rpm, and the electric brake allows the wrench to stop spinning immediately when your figner leaves the trigger (Useful when the nut is a drain plug for draining some liquid, you want total control over the speed as you don't want the liquid to spill out unexpectedly.). This wrench is simply a beauty to look at, extremely well made. And best of all, it is made in Japan! After a few use, I have already fallen in love with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Steal At This Price
I bought this saw when it was almost twice as expensive as it is now.The battery alone for this tool is $110.00. This is a fantastic cordless saw, lots of power, a light that illuminates the work surface, battery power lasts a long time, plate position is easily changed to cut different angles.
I have all of Hitachi's 24 volt tools and have had good luck with them and if I need a spare battery in the future I will just buy another saw.
This saw even came with a fantastic case, although I don't know that if at this price it includes that case.I use this saw a lot when I go to Home Depot, because for some reason Home Depot does not carry small sizes of wood work, you have got to buy the long 12 foot lengths and either cut it with their crappy hand saw or be creative loading it into your vehicle. I just rip it right in the parking lot and take off.
If you are in the market for a cordless circular saw this is the tops, especially for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb drill!
I have owned several DeWalt drills as well as a few other brands and the Hitachi beats them all.In every catagory the Hitachi is a better drill and a better buy.Although it does not have the same huge torque ratings that some of the other drills do, it is a much more user friendly and high quality piece of equipment. The rare earth motor is extremely flexible for various types of work and performs perfectly. It is light, comfortable, and effective.I would recommend this drill to anyone who is interested in the very best tools.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hitachi Cordless Drill
Nice drill, til you try to buy a replacement battery.Batteries are priced 80-100% more than competitor brands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough, light weight versatile performer
We use this tool in a college theater set shop. Students of varying degrees of experience use this drill/driver hours a day every day. It is well balanced, has good battery life, and finally is tough. After a year ofuse by real stage carpenters and real idiots, it has held up. I bought onefor my home. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The measure of any cordless drill is its ability to stand up against tough jobs. The Hitachi DS14DVB 14.4-volt cordless drill kit does just that. Powered by a high-capacity 14.4-volt B-type nickel-cadmium battery and a durable, fan-cooled motor, the Hitachi delivers 280 in./lbs. of torque, yet weighs in at a mere 4.6 pounds. The drill/driver features variable-speed control with built-in feedback and brake circuitry. Two drill speeds and a 22-stage adjustable clutch let you set the torque and speed to just the right levels. In fact, the folks at Hitachi have even included a torque selection chart to help you decide which setting to use depending on the material you're trying to penetrate. Soft-grip handles and a hand strap provide added comfort and stability when working with difficult materials, while the 13 mm, 1/2-inch keyless chuck makes bit changes a breeze. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice drill
I was searching Lowe's and found this drill. It is truly a good bargain. It is very powerful and the charger is great.I also got a free flashlight with it.If you are simple do-it yourselfer, this drill should have all the power that you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan Sorenson, Builder
This drill rocks!I have owned three other cordless 14.4 volt drills and this one outshines them all. There really is no comparison. I don't have the words.Feel, power, longevity, co-worker fascination, smoothness, quietness, ... did I mention power (?).It has plenty of all you need.Definately no need for an 18 volt, or any other volt for that matter.I especially love the all volt charger you get with it as I own other Hitachi cordless drills. If it has a flaw it's the case, but I'll deal with it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good tools, weak batteries
These are very good quality tools, like all Hitachi that I own (more than 20) they are built to last. The light on the circular saw is a great extra, even when cutting something in poor light the light on the saw is perfectly located. The drill is only a 3/8" chuck, but has lots of power. The only problem I find with this combo is that the batteries that came with it are 1.2 AH. I got lucky and found a couple of 18 volt Hitachi 3.0 AH batteries atLowes on clearance for 40 bucks each. With these batteries the tools have more power and run much longer on a charge. Even with the added expense of upgrading the batteries, these tools are worth it to me as they don't have to go back to the service center all the time like some of my DeWalt and Porter Cable tools do.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent tools but horrible battery life
I am in the home remodelling business and purchased this combi set primarily for the circular and recip saws. I figured for small, quick cuts the saws would come in handy. The tools are of decent quality and have a nice feel to them when in use. The problem are the batteries not being able to keep a charge. I followed the instructions regarding initial charging procedures and I am lucky if I get a few minutes use out of each charge. (This also includes the cordless drill). I own two other Hitachi saws that I love (corded of course). Despite the fact that this product is made in China, the batteries should be of much better quality. Most of Craftsman's professional line is made in China and Porter Cable is made in Taiwan. This set is basically a waste of money for the professional or DIY'er for that matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars The circular saw is the star of this combo
I have two each of the drill and circular saw.One of the saws I turned into a cordless table saw by building a small table and fence for it.It is really handy to have a small table saw right at the job site for ripping. There is no safe way to rip without a table saw. I couldn't find one of those small corded saws I liked, and even if I did, it would still need a cord.I don't know why some company does not make a cordless table saw.

The saw mounted on the table will rip 2X lumber no problem. It will easily cut 5/4 oak.Using two saws at once (the unmounted one is used for crosscuts) I have never been slowed down by battery life.As soon as the battery I'm using is dead, the one in the charger is recharged. The way to buy batteries for these tools is to buy them as part of a new tool kit.One replacement battery costs about 80% of the DS18DVB drill kit which includes two batteries and a bonus drill!

The drills are a replacement for two DW drills that were stolen.I liked the DW drills just fine, but these Hitachi drills are at least as good, and the Hitachi circular saw is much nicer than the old style (5-3/8") DW.One nit I have about the Hitachi drills is the keyless chucks may slip if you tighten them with bare hands; if I'm wearing gloves, no problem.Hitachi should maybe put something "grippier" like rubber on the chuck.

I don't miss the hammer drill option with these cordless drills.Hammer drilling is a bit beyond the capabilities of a cordless drill, IMHO.Get yourself a corded Milwaukee if you plan to do much hammer drilling at all. That said, these Hitachi drills have enough torque to drive a 4" concrete screw through 2X lumber and into a 75 year old slab, that has been pre-drilled by a Milwaukee HD, of course.

Never used the recip saw, so I can't comment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Medium Duty Driver
Lowe's had these on clearance for about 1/4 off, so I got one. I own a lot of Hitachi tools and this driver is of the usual good construction. It's rated at 700 inch# versus 1000 plus for the top end drivers. The battery is shorter than their 2.0 amp hour 12v battery and amphours are not stated. The batteries weigh 17 ozs versus 23.5 for the 2.0, and length of run is roughly proportional. The batteries interchange with the old and new 2.0's. Total tool weight with small battery is 57.5 ozs. The driver sinks 3" #8 screws into dry doug fir no problem. 5" #12 screws slowed it down somewhat. I would recommend this driver for lighter applications like screws, but not for heavier apps like bolts.

2-0 out of 5 stars good tool, not the best
i found this tool on sale at a local store. being a very satified owner of the makita 12v impact driver, i made sure i could return the tool if it didn't measure up.
got it home, charged it up and went to work. the tool felt great in my hand and really performed well. i was thrilled with my new toy when the battery began to croak while driving the 15th 3" screw into a soft pine log. i chalked it up to the brand new battery being not charged fully. i decided to do a side-by-side comparison. i charged my five year old makita 12v impact driver and my new hitachi. i ran three inch scews into pine logs. the makita was dead after 16 screws. the old makita burried 42!
i hope hitachi can rectify this problem because this tool feels great and performs well when the batteries are fresh. if the battery doesn't improve, they need to include two chargers and four batteries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate cordless
I have the Dewalt 24 Volt saw and sawsall, they worked good for the first six months, after that I could not depend on them to go on jobs with me without wired tools as back up. I have had the Hitachi combo for few months and they are much better tools than the dewalt 24 volts. The saw has the biggest blade on the market( 7 1/4 "), it weighs less than my Porter cable electric saw, and it is very comfortable to use. It has a luminated cutting area also, it comes in handy when you are working indoors.
The sawsall is very compact and powerful, you can control the speed thru the trigger. The price of these tools are cheaper than the Dewalts and they are superior tools.
P.S. The Hitachi Green is a nice break from the yellow, red, and grey colored tools out there. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 12 volt, but gets the job done.
I didn't want a heavier drill so I got this one especially because it had a 1/2" chuck. It is nice and light as you would expect of a 12 volt. The test was going to be how much torgue it had. I used it for a project requiring running 1-1/4, 2 and 3" screws into wood studs. The drill did not hesitate and ran the screws in better than I had figured. You can tell this is a professional drill. I only have it for a few weeks so this review doesn't address long term use. Also, it is interesting how Panasonic and Makita are going to what is supposed to be the better NiMh batteries instead of the NiCd batteries which this drill has. The plastic exterior of the drill seems a little cheap but overall good.

4-0 out of 5 stars one bad battery
Bought 2 batteries with this drill. Drill is super, great, powerful, reliable. BUT, one of the 2 batteries never did hold a charge for long. NOW, I can't locate another to replace it! What's with Hitachi??

5-0 out of 5 stars DS13DV2 12 volt drill
When I was first introduced to this product, it was when the other battery drill I was using totally quit working about 6 months after the warranty was up. I needed a drill ASAP and I called my tool supplier and they delivered to me this green Hitachi, he said try you'll love it, if not, I'll take it back. I had nothing to lose, seeing that yellow would definetly no longer be my color. I tried it and still use it with the same batteries as when I bought it and that was in November 1996. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A look at the specs.
