5-0 out of 5 stars Shop Fox Fence Excellent
I read the review regarding the Shop Fox fence and was quite surprised since mine works just great.I just purchased the Grizzly Contractor Left Tilt 2 HP w/Shop Fox fence and found the whole set up to be excellent.I am sure that the Biesemeyer Fence System is terrific, but for my money I found the Shop Fox an excellent value. For perspective, let's keep in mind the fence is just one of the variables to accurate cuts. The key is whether the fence (any fence) is, or can be made parallel to the blade.Shop Fox has several adjustments for this purpose.I found the fence rock solid. And I must say that I think some of us are getting just a little anal regarding the fence set up.Go ahead and spend your money, if you have it on the Biesemeyer but for all practical purposes the Shop Fox is the same fence for about one third less money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant fence system
I wanted this fence system for my own home shop, having just retired.I previously had used one in a carpenter/cabinet shop for about 14 years, so was quite familiar with its stability and accuracy. My saw is an older Delta contractor model.I built a 6' by 8' saw table and installed the fence on it with no problem at all.It did take me longer to get it than I had hoped(backordered at Delta) but it is well worth it now. It took me no more tha 2 hours to install it completely with only minor final adjustments. Did not need the rear mounting angle, but did not have the option to not get it since it is a package deal.Called Biesemeyer in Arizona for the switch mount and I received it before I did the fence. I think Grizzly would do good to give their customers the option of getting this system on there cabinet saws.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock Solid and well made.
I have the Grizzly 1023S which is more then plenty of saw for most serious hobbiests. But the Shopfox fence, which was said to be a so-called "Beisemeyer clone" is far from it! The ShopFox is shorter in height, is spot welded at the seems(poorly at that), and does not stay solid when locked down. No matter how much I tried to adjust the fence, it would never line up true - and stay there! The cam handle is flimsy, and feels like it will snap off if leaned on.

The Biesmeyer (I have the Commercial BC50W Platinum edition) however is a dream. I didn't even have to change out the Shopfox rail, which also had to be shimmed to fit - just like most any 3rd party fence systems.

I just dropped the fence down, adjusted the seat angle so the outfeed offset is between 1/64 and 1/80th of an inch, and it has been solid ever since. The welds are solid and true. The cam is STEEL, not hard plastic.

The only complaints I have about the Beismeyer is the lack of pre-drilled holes to mount a alternative (sacrificial) rip fence. It takes a brave person to drill holes through such a pretty, and expensive fence. I'll have to eventually. (gulp!)
Alternatively you can buy the beismeyer extension fence... for a little more then a hundred dollars. This would be unlikely since I have 5 other sacrificial fences of varying hieght/widths to use for those special purpose cuts and jigs.

The other little gripe is the lack of micro-adjust knob - like the Vega. But, since I've always bump set fences anyway, it's no big deal.

Also - Few other fence that I've seen comes with a metric tape! Sometimes measuring in cm rather then inches is helpful. Especially if you are trying to follow a european project plans. Shopfox, nor Grizzly have the option for differnet tapes. (strange since ShopFox is a European company!) I've made it a habit of measuring from the blade to fence anyway.. but the tape helps get the fence to within 1/64th of an inch quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Delta P-20, model 40-680 scroll saw
I have been using scroll saws to cut copper and steel on a full time basis for the last twelve years.I have written and co-authored a book titled "Scroll Sawing in Metal". (Schiffer Publishing)

I have used Delta Scroll Saws for the last eight years.(Also used Dremel and Dewalt as back up saws.)

The Delta P-20 Model 40-680 is the worst Delta Scroll Saws that I have ever used.I have had two of them for over two years and they will not hold up under heavy use. Some of the critical parts are made out of soft aluminum that wear out in less that three days of continual use.The vibration in these machines has been so bad that screws and other parts are continually working loose and/or breaking. Also, Delta replacement parts have become so expensive that I would be better off using the Delta saws for boat anchors and buying a less expensive brand of saw.

The Quick set II Blade for the Top arm on the P-20 is not nearly as good as the type I that came with My old Delta Q-3 scroll saw.

I wish that some manufacturer could come up with a scroll saw that is actually of a commercial grade that would stand up to heavy use. (And still be fairly affordable)

4-0 out of 5 stars Rock solid, one complaint
This saw is rock solid, absolutely no vibrations and plenty of power. The blade change is quick an easy and the stand is very sturdy.I own a cabinet shop and I use the saw for cuting intricate corbels. The saw works great. My only complaint is the dust blower. It doesn't blow hard enough to remove the dust away from the pattern lines.I worked with the bellows to get more air flow but was only slightly successful. To much of the air leaks by at the bellows and not enough goes to the tube.

Other than the blower problem, I would put this saw up against any of the top brands. If you don't need the 30" throat there is no reason to pay the extra for other FAR more expensive saws.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful machine, mostly
This scroll saw is a pleasure to use.No vibration, quick blade changes for inside cuts, many great features. The stand is sturdy (could use wheels!) and the table top is rock solid.

It lacks a light or any part to which a light could be readily attached. The dust collection nozzle works very well, when hooked up to my collector or shop vac.

My scroll saw arrived missing two bolts to hold a box which protects the wiring. In all, I made seven or eight calls to Delta. They promptly and repeatedly sent me the wrong bolts.Turns out they have no way to keep records of service calls, so you start at the beginning each time. These particular parts are mislabeled at the warehouse, and there is no way to find the right ones.

I finally gave up and taped the circuit box in place. It's a small item, but shows that the Delta customer service operation is in need of a major overhaul. Not the people, necessarily; every one was pleasant and as helpful as possible. But they are hampered by a stone-aged information handling system. ... Editorial Review

Like you, we don't like to mess around with our sanding--it's dusty, tedious at times, and not one of the more rewarding aspects of woodworking. However, after firing up this 12-inch disc sander from Delta, we're starting to change our tune. Designed as an affordable version of Delta's industrial sander, its cast-iron base supports the machine with vibration-dampening weight, while the tilting table (with positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees) and inset miter slot let you support and position your material. The 1/2-horsepower induction motor spins the heavy-duty steel disc quietly, up to 2,500 rpm. Depress the manual brake lever on top, and the disc stops in seconds--a nice safety feature that truly impressed us. This tool takes off a lot of stock quickly, and removes dust very effectively through a built-in connector hose that attaches to any shop vac. Bolt Delta's disc sander down to your workbench, and get ready to remove life's rougher edges. --Justin Paul ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for the price
I am pleased with this sander. While I would like it to be a bit more powerful (will do whatever I want as long as I take my time and don't push it) it gets the job done for a very low price.

Also, the "positive" stops at 90 and 45 degrees could be better designed and more accurate, but again, if I take my time and set it up carefully each time they work well.

The castings are not perfect, but the table is very flat and I have little runnout...so the casting defects are cosmetic.Again, for the price a nice machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value for a disk sander
While it's not going to win any awards for fit and finish, Delta put the money where it counts.Disk is smooth, table is nice, and dust collection is decent.I think the Delta is a best buy, as the Harbor Freight units have poor build quality, and the Jet unit is $100 more.

5-0 out of 5 stars 12" Delta disk sander
This is a dream machine. Smooth, quite and well made. Everything fits fine. This is a great machine for the Money. If someone writes a bad review on this product it is because they got a lemon or they are looking for a $2,000 dollar product for $169. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Why buy a planer? Well, it lets you reduce the thickness of your workpieces to exactly what you want them to be. It creates a flawlessly flat second surface, essential in good woodworking. Why buy this planer? Here's our list of why we like it: It has a fantastic 12-inch wide by 6-inch deep capacity to tackle large jobs. The patented cutterhead system raises and lowers on four large, precision-ground columns. Depth of cut can be adjusted in a wink with a top-mounted handle. A patented cutterhead lock stabilizes the cutterhead for total rigidity and superior snipe control. Double-edged--meaning reversible--high-speed steel knives double your cutting life. Adjustable infeed and outfeed tables and a stainless-steel base provide a smooth surface for moving stock, and the tables fold in for storage in minimal space. The prices on these planers have come down quite a bit in the past few years, and this one, with its quality and many features, is a great buy. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, easy, lowCPI, snipe, uTables, uLife Blades
I was looking cheap, just to clean up some rough-hewn boards. The bottom-end Lowes had was the TP-305 (12.5" vs TP-300 12.0", otherwise EXACTLY the same) for $199, so I got that.

Into and Basics
First off, the TP-305 is single speed.Fine for my purposes. As someone else said, if you're doing "fine woodworking", you'll sand with high-grit before calling it done.

Everything is metal, and the handle on top doubles as a foam covered transfer roller. It's very solid and stable, you know, for a "portable".

The belt drive is about 3/4", versus about 2" for the Hitachi and DeWalt.Conversely, the belt on the Delta is fiber reinforced black rubber, like a fan belt, rather than being clear, plain rubber.

There is supposedly a chain-drive for gear reduction, but I haven't dismantled it yet to lubricate them.

Setup
Second, it was a snap to prepare.I pulled it out of the box. It's maybe 75 or 80 pounds.OK if you lift right, or 2-person lift otherwise. It included the planer assembly, a dust chute with 2 fasteners, a hex wrench which fits in a slot on top, a magnetic blade tool, and a crank handle with hex-head fastener.

I put it on top of a table. No LRF support, and there was a little flashing on the bottom, so don't unpack this onto a nice table.Something like this should be bolted down. The deck holes are 1/4", one on each corner.I used some washers and deck screws and that was more than enough to keep it stable.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
You NEED earplugs.Yes, it is "quiet" compared to some shopplaners/jointers, it's still loud.Earmuffs should be OK, but I opted for spongy/expanding 33db earplugs. No problem there, but I was definitely deaf to the world.

Also, goggles are a must. These two things are silly and simple, but just in case you didn't know. This might not be so important if they ever get immunology and organ cloning down, but since you're limited to one set of eyes right now, best protect them from flying debris.

If you want to reach, adjust, oil, or perform ANY maintenance, unplug your machine."I thought I was safe but something fell and flipped the switch" wouldn't quite cut it with your friends.

ALWAYS operate with the dust chute in place. The motor blows air into it and it sends the chips out the back.Without it, A) You'll be covered in vertically launched curls, and more importantly B) The top of the cutter head will be exposed, which is very not safe.

Keep distractions and horseplay away from this machine. This is not a toy, it's an 8000 RPM spinning blade of doom.No playing.Period.OK?JUNIOR!?!?!Are you LISTENING TO ME!NO PLAYING.Ok.Good.Serious machine.

SNIPER, NO SNIPING!
As a portable planer goes, the fold-out tables are fairly small.I tried using Skill brand roller stands on each side to help hold the workpiece, but this planer loves to snipe on ingress.

Tilt your board down into the planer about 5 degrees, and don't cut deep and you'll limit it.Even so, every board has a 2-3" spot that's maybe 1/32" thinner than the rest of the length.

Egress snipe is alleviated by lifting ever so slightly on the workpiece for the final stretch. If you don't get it, you'll hear the motor change speed as it chews into the end. It's really just the design of the rollers.I think you'd probably get snipe even if you made your own full-length table flush with the input.

With 12" boards, snipe was not very noticeable, whereas with 4" boards, it was always very noticeable.

Blade Lifespan
The blades that came with it do well, but it's only 2 blades. It goes through them fairly quickly.Newer wood is fine.I made several passes on both sides of rough hewn cedar. All was well. I sent through some 12" rough cedar with 25 year crusty paint, and it wasn't really happy with that.

It's 2mm per turn and on 12" stock with fresh blades you can do that. When you get to 1/3 turn and it still drops the RPMs significantly, you're past the life of the blades.

I got to this point after removing 3/16ths from each side of 40 feet of 4" wide cedar, and about 1/8th from each side of a 6' long 12" piece of paint encrusted cedar. It seems that the wider board heats the blades more, especially the old, rubbery paint, and once they heat up, the edge fades MUCH more rapidly.

Signs your planer blades are dull
The machine emits dust and not curls.
The machine leaves roller rubber on the workpiece.
The wood peels along the grain in very thin strip.
The motor slows down, but there is no output.
The rollers stop feeding.
The workpiece becomes polished, even glassy.
The workpiece is noticeably warm to the touch.
Running the workpiece through a second time at the same setting till slows the motor.

Blade Replacements
I'm thinking I'll see if I can design the same at http://www.emachineshop.com out of something harder under heat, but you know, since I don't REALLY have the skill for that, I picked up a couple sets of spare blades when I got the planer. The spares were $26/set and made of "High Speed Steel".I don't know the specific grade, but truly, they went south REALLY quickly on the wider, painted boards.

Blade Swap procedures
The swap is fairly easy, though they are initially installed with an impact wrench.Breaking the screws the first time gave off sparks on three.Freaky.Anyway, you access the six screws by:
A) Unplug the machine.Yes, UNPLUG IT.Switches have been known to fail in this universe.Don't risk it.
B) remove the two thumbscrews on the top.
C) Remove the dust chute
D) Turn the head with "the tool" such that you an access one side of the head. Adjust the machine height, or rotate the head such that the tool clears the handle/rollerbar.
E) Loosten the screws such that the black plate ALMOST comes loose.Test one screw for proper sizing.I think this is about a 16th of an inch.
F) Use the little split magnet tool to scoop under the blade, lift up off of the retaining pins, and pull out.
WARNING The blade may be hot if it's recently been used, especially if it's really dull.
G) spin the blade.
WARNING The sharp side of the blade is SHARP!I know this seems like an idiot thing to say, but if you aren't careful, I will mock you for your bloodletting experience.Yes, I'm secretly watching you.
H) Slid in, align such that it drops down properly (ie, the retaining pins are in the holes).
I) Tighten the screws, starting with the ends and working your way in.In generaly, thumb-tighten all of them, then torque them down afterward to make sure alignment is good.
J) Repeat for the other side of the head. (ie. always swap/replace BOTH blades at the same time).

Miscellaneous
Check your belt shroud, a burgundy curve of plastic on the top right of the machine.Mine had too much flashing in the channels and didn't seat properly.I didn't notice until it had been carved/sanded away severely.

The deck plate is polished steel. You can see the cutter head and rollers clearly in it.It's really cool, and might come in handy should something jam or clog.REMEMBER NOT TO TOUCH THE HEAD WITH YOUR FINGERS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE CUT.

Yes, I used first and second person in a review.

Despite the warning that this is not a toy, etc., it's VERY fun, or at least satisfying, to see what a machine like this can do.

SUMMARY
This is cheap. Snipe will happen.Rollers, an assistant, or a full-sized and aligned table are greatly helpful.Blades dull quickly on older wood with old rubbery paint.

5-0 out of 5 stars All things being equal and relevant to the task at hand....
...this is an excellent piece of equipment for the small shop or any woodworker on a tight or limited budget. Well packed, minimal assembly, easy-to-follow instructions. The handles are a bit spartan and initially awkward to grab but once you lift this planer up a few times and move it about, they get easier to grab and hold on to. As for actual operation, I planed one side of a fairly rough length of 12" Douglas Fir plank into a nice, flat, and smooth surface using just 5 passes. I took my time and used a light touch on the depth of cut adjustment with each pass so as not to bog down the rollers and cutters. Everything worked very well, first time out of the box. Smooth, steady movement of the stock under the rollers and through the planer, relatively low operating and cutting noise, negligible vibration and very good chip deflection out the rear. You won't believe how much "chip" comes out of this planer and, unless you have a collector attached to it, onto the shop floor. But that's another reason why I have a shop vacuum. Looks like the factory did a reasonably good job of adjusting the cutting blades too. Of course, you wouldn't opt for a compact low-priced unit like this one if your budget is bigger or if your usage is regular or heavy. Pros will no doubt pooh-pooh this unit as sub-par but, for the money, this is a remarkably efficient and well-made portable planer with a decent capacity. Just remind yourself that you shouldn't use a Volkswagen Beetle to pull out tree stumps or a Derby thoroughbred to pull a beerwagon.

4-0 out of 5 stars 12" Delta Planer
This planer is decent for the money. I bought it at Lowe's for $199 and it has served me fairly well.

It's getting harder to find the knives for the planer locally so I now need to order them from the Internet, which is fine though if you need a replacement set it's nice to know that you can go and get the blades locally.

The planer doesn't have a height lock so the vibration from the machine will make change the height after planing several boards. Snipe is minimal if everything is in aligned correctly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars viberation
This lathe has it. I purchased it from a local dealer and have been treated well.they sent out aservice man who took off the pulley cover and discovered a bentpulley also the hand wheal ran out of round, both replaced. Still viberated I had an enginer at my expense and he said the bearing maybe bad. Delta's service center replaced bearing and main shaft. Much better but still viberated,I just ordered a jet lathe, the only solution I know,I have had a Sears lathe for 25 years and thought I was upgrading.I thought I was alone with this problem but from other reviews I see i'm not.I bought a Delta because I have a basment full of their tools. Saw, chop saw, Drill press mortiser, shaper, scroll sawelectric Hand tools etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but problems to know
I have been using this lathe for approximately 1 year and this is what I have found.
I bought the lathe as a first lathe. I was inexperienced and on a budget. With those things in mind, it did well for the first few months. All the items were there, it shipped fast and was not difficult to assemble without assistance from anyone else, though I recommend getting a friend to help with some of the lifting.
I noticed a rattle and some vibration, but it was very minimal and it didn't seem to affect performance. I satisfactorily turned several bowls and a lot of spindle work. The motor gets a lot of bang out of the 3/4 horses. The mobile headstock is very versital. The tool rest is quite good. For a starter lathe it is a nice tool.
Now to the problems.
1) The base is not heavy or rigid enough. That is an easy fix and not a real detractor.
2) The tailstock base does not lock down well enough and I find myself retightening it frequently.
3) The biggest problem now is the constant worsening of the rattling and the vibration it causes, which translates into the spindle and handwheel. It makes it impossible to rechuch anything accurately and vibration is extreme, even with small loads. One of the pulleys is definately mis-machined and has both horizontal and vertical displacement while running. Delta has the pulleys on back order from their overseas supplier. I therefore took it in to the local authorized dealer and have yet to hear back. A wobbley handwheel and spindle movement make turning unenjoyable.

Searching the web and the message boards, I have seen about an even number of people saying they have had no problems as those who have had worse problems than I have. Most seem to revolve around the reeves drive and quality control...Perhaps the overseas manufacture of this lathe is at fault, I don't know.

If Delta could fix the problems with the drive and pulleys, this could be a great mid range lathe. With the mechanical difficulties I am having now with only moderate use (1-2 weekends a month), I could not recommend this lathe unless you test the specific one you are buying to make sure it is in good working order.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems!
I purchased my Delta 46-715 lathe from Amazon.com.It and the free goodies that were promised were delivered promptly. This is my first lathe so I have nothing to compare with the Delta but thus far, I've nothing to complain about.Assembly and set-up was easy, the machine works exactly as advertised, it's heavy (and thus stable) and now, I understand why woodturners are always grinning. ... If your workshop doesn't have one of these combination sanders, it's probably because you don't think you need it. But put it to work once and you'll realize you can't get along without it. Its uses are endless. You know those tight curves and angles you have to sand by hand? Not anymore, thanks to this Shopmaster sander. The automatic belt-tensioning and tracking controls are conveniently located and easy to use, and the built-in power takeoff for a flexible shaft accessory (sold separately) is a great extra touch that allows you to accomplish any number of additional tasks. Finishing curves or odd-shaped work is a cinch when you remove the belt platen, and you'll even be sanding chamfers and bevels just by tilting the sturdy aluminum tables on either sander. The disc is a fabulous 8 inches, which opens up all kinds of uses. The side panel removes in a blink to change belts. The 1-inch belt sands 3,000 surface feet per minute, and the disc travels at 1,725 rpm for aggressive stock removal, all powered by a 1/3-horsepower induction motor. A built-in dust port allows connection to your dust management system. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected "kit-in-a-box
Like most of the inexpensive, cast iron, machinery coming out of the far east, this is somewhat of a "kit-in-a-box." All the parts were there, and it assembled pretty much as to instructions. It helps to have a mill file, and a countersink chucked in a cordless drill, to knock off some of the sharp edges and burrs. You will also need a few ounces of paint thinner/kerosene and some old rags to take off the thick coating of grease on some of the parts. Finally, a small tube of decent grease or anti-seize compound to carefully lube locations (like the tilting table for the disk) that have metal-metal contact.

This model has reasonably flat cast iron tables, unlike the Craftsman model I had previously used. I use it all the time for sanding fine parts. I only wish the belt table had the nice semi-circular,tounge in groove guide that the disk table has.

Startup found the belt "squirming" a bit too much for my tast. Carefully opening the side panel, and touching up the crown/mold parting line region of the elastomeric drive wheels (while the machine is running) took care of that issue. ***Please, be very, very careful while trying this procedure. Use a straight mill file, with teeth all of the way to the end, and do not put you fingers inside the shroud area.***

Such tuneups are the "price to pay" for inexpensive tools.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment for Delta
I received and assembled the sander with relative ease. After little use, I found I could not get the tracking mechanism to work.I removed the belt cover and found the entire top pulley moved on the shaft it was mounted on which made the tracking impossible. It appeared to be a flaw in assembly.
I returned the product for a full refund and purchased a Craftsman equivalent. The Craftsman sander had more metal parts, including the idler wheels. Both Craftsman and Delta units are Chinese made.
I have other Delta products that I am very happy with. It's disappointing to me that Delta is buying Chinese made equipment and putting their name on it.Go for the quality and don't worry about being loyal to the name!
Tool Crib was wonderful in the handling of this issue!I will gladly continue doing business with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Sander
I found this sander reasonably easy to set up (except for the disc sander cover.)It has worked very well on the projects where I have used it(mixed wood and metal.) I did have to build a stand for it.
It is not a 6 x 48 belt and 12 inch disc sander, but it works for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product if all the parts came together
I ordered it and when it came the box was opened and parts were missing. I figured maybe atleast they would have put it back in the box or UPS wouldn't deliver it but i was wrong. I have called and are suppose to recieve the parts. We'll see when i get them. Other then that I like delta products very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars optional stand
Delta is now offering a free stand with a purchase of a model no. 22-565 planer. Thisis for your information only. You may want to review this situation. If this stand is the same one your offering, then my review is that this is a strong durable stand at a good price. Easy to assemble and smart looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stand -- Solid as a rock
I bought this stand for my 12 1/2" Delta 22-560 planer and it's great. It was super easy to assemble and it's rock solid. The working height is about perfect.

I considered building my own stand but a woodworking show vendor recommended this stand and he was right. If you have a 12" or 12-1/2" Delta planer, this is a great platform for it.The top is some kind of MDF but and it's hard as a rock.If you have another brand of planer and it fits on this top, I suspect it would be easy to drill mounting holes for it. The Delta 22-560 is 23 5/8" x 21 1/2" (L x W) and there's a couple of inches to spare in each dimension on the stand. I'd imagine most portable planers in the 12" to 13" class will fit.

Apparently there is also a mobile base specifically made for this stand (Delta PN:50-323) but I've not seen it in person. Since my shop is on the small side, I may buy the mobile base as well.

I will add an adjustable height roller table to use as an out feed surface and that should complete the planer workstation in my shop. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An industrial sized grinder priced for the home hobbiest
My first impression of this grinder was that it is HUGE and HEAVY. It is no wonder that the cardboard box and styrofoam packaging arrived in pretty bad shape. Nothing damaged though and it went together in just a few minutes. The lamp comes without a light bulb but I found that the recommended 40 watt reflector track light bulb works well.

I am a woodturner so I am interested in smooth running wheels that leave a good cutting edge on my high speed steel tools. The grinding wheels that come with this unit are of reasonable quality and produce good results with proper dressing. The dressser that comes with the grinder is OK for truing the wheel but leaves the surface a little too rough for my liking so I use a diamond dresser.

The tool rests are strong and solid but if you need to make frequent adjustments to the rest, as I do, you should think about replacing the supplied bolts with rachet knobs for easier adjustment.

I think that Delta should have connected the two grinder exhaust ports together, as they face each other, and provided a single vacuum connection. The side facing exhaust portrs make connecting an exhaust hose awkward.

The grinder I received runs very quiet with almost no vibration once that the wheels trued up. It takes up a lot more space on my work bench than the old sears grinder it replaced but the extra clearance between the wheels and motor housing makes grinding curved surfaces much easier. All in all, I am very pleased with this unit and I am sure that I will get many years of good service from it.For the price it is hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional grade 8" grinder
Because my prior [high-speed] grinders too easily overheated metal parts, I now prefer slower speed machines. Also, wheels turning at a slower speed are less likely to disintegrate, so this machine should be somewhat safer than a 3450 RPM grinder. All things being equal, a 3450 RPM grinder will remove material faster, but the motor on this 1725 RPM grinder is so powerful, to remove material faster, just press harder.

The 23-725 is big and heavy. In spite of Amazon and Delta claiming this is a 100 lb. device, the box it came in weighed "only" 82 pounds - so the machine probably weighs about 79 pounds. That's still plenty heavy. The wheels are 15 ¾" from wheel center to wheel center; it's 10 ¾" to the top of the motor housing; 19" wide not counting the eye shields, 12" to the top of the wheel housing; 11 3/8" deep without the water tray, and 12 ¾" deep with the water tray.

The cast iron motor frame, tool rests & tool-rest brackets, plus the four large rubber feet, keeps vibration within the acceptable range, and gives the tool a look and feel of quality and heft. The tool-rests are rock-solid.

The toggle switch is protected, so it's unlikely you'll accidentally turn it on, a good safety feature. The lift-off water tray is amply sized. The fitted lamp is quite nice and the goose-neck section is about the right length. At the rear of each wheel's housing is an inward facing 1 3/4" dust port for a vacuum hook-up.As an alternative, a rubber-banded sock over each port seems to catch most of the grit. The grinder comes with a wheel dressing tool.

The box said Made in Taiwan. Many years ago that might have been an indication of lower quality, but it seems to me that this tool looks good enough to have said Made in the USA.

As a point of reference, the Sears Craftsman 8" professional grinder (model # 21158, Internet or catalog only) looks nearly identical but costs $10 more (not counting tax & shipping), is a 3450 rpm machine, and doesn't come with an aluminum oxide wheel.

If you already own a grinder, consider retrofitting your old machine with wire wheels and/or buffing wheels.

This Delta is a professional grade grinding machine.I've had the 10" version of this grinder (Delta 23-735, now discontinued) for a couple of years, and have used it countless times.Perhaps that's the ultimate accolade; I liked the 10" model so much, I bought this one for my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 23-725 8" Industrial Grinder
Excellent grinder. Very smooth running, low noise. Shipping is the only problem. Amazon should not say it ships in 24 hours when they know it will be closer to a month. It was shipped in a weak cardboard box. This is a 100 lb plus grinder. That is asking a little much of Chinese cardboard. The light and one side was smashed. It is being replaced without a problem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice contractor saw
I've been using this saw for about three years now (when I bought it it was called the Platinum Edition, not X5; everything is identical though).

It's a great contractor saw. It cuts well and can be transported with two people. However, there are a few drawbacks.

First, moving the saw always throws the extension table out of alignment. If you move the table between sites, I suggest that the table be completely removed. The table is attached with wood screws and they just are not substantial enough to hold the table while moving it.

Second, dust collection is atrocious. If you plan on using this is a cabinet shop, you need to attach something to collect dust.I tried the dust chute manufactured by Delta and it is a complete waste of time.Instead, I attached 1/4" hardboard. NOTE: the best way to do this is to attach it between the legs and frame, which requires a lot of effort.

Third, the blade height mechanism is very difficult to adjust. The blade height mechanism loosens over time. So, if you are cutting dados and it is loose, you can end up with a dado that starts at 1/2" deep and finishes at 1/4" deep. Tightening it requires that you be a contortionist or that you turn the saw upside down.

Fourth, the blade guard is tough to work with. The plastic housing does not stay up and out of the way. I eventually tossed the blade guard and purchased a Beisemeyer after-market splitter, which works great.

Fifth, I don't see any benefit to the UniFence. In the three years I've used it, I've never had a situation where I wanted to change the oriientation of the fence. But I've had many occasions where a Beisemeyer fence would have been useful. Also, attaching jigs to a UniFence is much more difficult than attaching to a Beisemeyer.

Sixth, the motor will bog down when cutting thick tough wood, like 5/4 oak or rock maple.

So, this machine gets four stars (and I put a cabinet saw on my Christmas list).

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Contractor's Saw
I've been shopping for a contractor's saw for awhile and I checked out the Delta, DeWalt, Jet, Grizzly, Etc.Most woodworkers I knew had either a Delta or a Jet and both saws have staunch supporters. The things that swayed me toward the Delta were: 1) The Unifence (easy to set up/adjust, versatile, and extremely rigid/accurate)2) Delta has a great reputation for customer service3) The X-5 version has some heft at almost 300lbs4) I can take advantage of the X-5 rebates that have been going on5) 5yr warranty...I probably won't need it.The saw is well built.

I had high expectations for this saw...

Now that I've had the saw for about a month.I am still very satisfied with my choice.

I had a small shipping damage issue with a couple of parts that Delta sent replacements for without delay.I had to wait on hold, but when they talked with me, the response was immediate and courteous.I love a company that cares for customers.

I set up the saw by myself with little or no difficulties. The only thing that was close to time consuming was mounting the motor and aligning the belt properly. The Unifence was easy to set up and align. The best way to ensure that you have great fence alignment...MAKE IT EASY TO ADJUST.The fence is solid with no side deflections (I checked out all fences at retailers and at Woodworking shows, the Unifence is up there with the best).Blade 45 and 90 deg stops were also very easy to adjust.

Part finish was excellent and the saw looks like a quality piece of equipment that I will give to my sons...after 30 years or so.

Cutting with the saw was a great experience. The saw is very stable, quietly powerful and safe to operate with splitter and guard.

When I get the mobile base, I'll be able to move it around when I am using other tools.

I really couldn't ask for more out of a Contractor's saw.

Except maybe one thing...If power tools are going to be sold by Amazon or any other vendor that ships. The packaging needs to be a little more robust to withstand the abuse that individually shipped tools can get.Replacing parts for shipping damage can't be a good way to make profits.I want Delta to be around for a long time, so please spend a little more on packaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Table saw.
We bought this table saw for our workshop so we did not have to use our portable contractors saw in the shop.It took awhile to assemble it and some parts were broken, however they were shipped to us within 3 days. The only thing I do not like is that you can not mount an outfeed table to it when you have the unifence system. The motor housing when tipped to cut at 45 degrees sticks up above the table level and so the outfeed table would prevent tipping to a full 45 degrees.
Other than that, has great power, well built and easy to use. ... Read more

Editorial Review

A versatile all-in-one machine, this 4-inch belt sander lies horizontally for edge- and face-sanding without the runaway effort of a handheld belt sander, thanks to the sturdy, adjustable, and removable backstop. Or position the belt vertically (or at any angle between 0 and 90 degrees) for contour, bevel, and chamfer sanding--the tables on both sanders tilt to 45 degrees. Use the miter gauge, and you're able to sand in compound angles. The belt sands 2,000 surface feet per minute, and the disc rotates at 3,100 rpm for serious stock removal. A die-cast aluminum base offers stability at a remarkably spare 33 pounds. Predrilled base holes make mounting a simple task. Delta even provided a built-in 2-1/4-inch dust port for connection to a shop vacuum to keep your workshop air clean. Sure, handheld sanders have their place in a woodworker's shop, but add this to your collection and you won't know how you ever got along without it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value and great for small Projects
I definitely agree with some of the other reviews that this sander is a great value and that its excellent for small projects or as a hobby. I have my own shop and it fits perfectly in for doing the job. Shop around though for the best price. The sander is a great value based on its functionality. And that the belt can be used either vertically or horizantally is definitely a plus. Also replacement belts and disks are well stocked everywhere. Its much esier than some brand that uses a special size or type thats unique to that particular machine. A+++++

2-0 out of 5 stars Motor Burnout
Purchased this sander and used it for light sanding only on small parts. Not many hours of use in two years when the warranty ran out. But so did the motor. It costs more for a motor than the whole sander sobe aware that this is what I would consider a throw away tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD VALUE
I recently purchased this product.I found the manual to be well thought out and easy to follow.Assembly was straight forward and easy. The unit seems to be fairly well constructed for its size and intended purpose. My only complaint is with the belt which has an overlap seam and can cause considerable thumping in some applications.I would definately reccommend this product for small projects. However, be sure to check everyone's price, as I found one seller to have a price considerably below everyone elses. ... Here's a beauty that brings stationary-model features to the benchtop. You get the capacity to drill to the center of a 10-inch board with a 3-1/4-inch stroke, and the table tilts left and right to 45 degrees with a positive stop at 0 and offers variable-speed control at the turn of a dial. Changing speeds is as simple as turning the knob, allowing you to drill at 500 rpm and up to 3,100 rpm. Have some repetitive drilling to do? The adjustable-position locking depth stop will take the trouble out of the job. We like the Shopmaster drill presses for their Delta precision and tight prices, but we have to admit that the rack-and-pinion table depth adjustment and the built-in gooseneck lamp on this model win our hearts. The three-jaw chuck will accept bits up to 1/2 inch, and when you're done drilling, just pop out the removable safety switch to prevent unauthorized use. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not a very well made machine
This drill press has been very disappointing. For a bench top, it is too heavy to lift so I made a stand for it, taking up limited space in my small work area. After using it for a couple of months things sort of flew apart. The main reason I selected this model was its ease of changing speeds with a simple turn of the dial. Since I have experience in machine and assembly, took the thing apart and discovered the reason was poor parts and design. While the variable speed mechanism is faily simple the design needs a little work. A set screw to hold the bearing in place on the upper motor pulley would have helped. It worked its way out of place (friction fit?) and there went the variable speed. Next, a little attention to the machining of the cap holding the spring above the motor pulley so it wouldn't bend the retaining ring out of it's grove on the motor shaft would help as well. I believe I have spent more time fixing the thing than it has given me doing the drilling tasks I bought it for.

1-0 out of 5 stars POOR QUALITY AND DESIGN
I received the drill press in great condition and quickly from Amazon. It was easy to assemble and the instructions were well written (there was a lot of grease on every piece that made assembly challenging).

Once together, it functioned flawlessly-----for about 1 day! Then the variable speed function ceased working properly.Upon examination of the pulley system after removal of the top cover (which was nearly impossible to reassemble) it was noted that the spring system on the rear pulley did not work properly. The die-cast (cheap) rear pully had a small crack in it as well.I disassembled it and returned it to Amazon.

Subsequently, I purchased the Sears Craftsman 12" drill press and although you need to change the belt pulley ratio manually to adjust the speed, it has worked perfectly on a daily basis for months now and under heavy loads the motor doesn't even lag.

AVOID THIS DELTA DRILL PRESS!!

Broken:Two times in 6 months- 0 stars...

This drill broke again today; the variable speed control snapped inside the housing. This second mechanical failure, combined with the wobbling chuck I have endured the last couple times I used it, have forced me to publicly condemn this machine as unfit to sell.I don't mind maintaining my machines occasionally, but I have put in over 8 hours of labor vs. less than one hour using the drill.Presently I am sick of it and will decide if I should try to fix it again, or just buy one from a different manufacturer.(...) ... Reviews (10)

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Instructions, Good Product
The editorial review @ Amazon states that this is a REPLACEMENT of the chip chute... THIS IS INCORRECT!The poor quality copy that serves as the instructions never states that you remove the existing chute--thanks to one of the Amazon reviewers for getting this right! It fits over the existing chute. In this configuration, the dust hood works well and is structurally stiff.Mine fit on the planer with no problems or modifications.

As far as performance is concerned, I even forgot to turn my dust collections system (1100CFM) on for one pass and the only chips that came out were towards the front of the machine; with the dust collection turned on the dust chute was every bit as effective as I thought it would be: almost no chips or dust in the work area.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Fit for the price
Sheet metal had to be rebent into the proper position to get it to fit.About a 45 minute job.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little flimsy for Delta
The metal dust hood is a little flimsy for what I usually expect from Delta. The instructions were photocopies of bad photocopies and were nearly useless. The hood goes over the existing chip chute, it does not replace it.This was not clear in the instructions. If you remove the existing chip chute to add the dust collector, it leaves the blades exposed. However, it is easy enough to see how it fits on the planer. The holes, etc fitted well.It works well and collects most of the dust and chips.I hessitated before buying based on other reviews.I think it works well for people using a dust collector with plenty of air flow.It probably does not work well if you are trying to use a shop vac.Overall, it's OK for me.I would not have minded spending a few more dollars if the quality was better. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars These are a decent value...
Actually I give this set 3.5 stars.I have used the larger diameter drums in my Delta 17-900 drill press with great success.I have also chucked the two smallest diameter drums into my hand drill and used them to aid in fitting new door lock/sets to old doors (enlarging the bore for the latch).

For all you fellow tool junkies out there, granted this isn't the nicest sanding drum attachment set on the market, but for the home hobbyist or a pro who only occasionally has the need, these will serve quite nicely. For 20 bucks you cannot go wrong here...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good set...
I use this set of drums with a Milwaukee angle drill, to clean up the inside of bandsaw boxes and to establish contours and round over edges. For the price they are tough to beat. Have been using them for at least three years maybe a bit longer and have no complaints. I found I can use the tubes from my Jet spindle sander, just cut em in half, saves having to buy differant sets of tubes. Get two usable tubes from one Jet tube.
I use this set almost every day and as I said have no complaints. This is a good buy and I recommend it.

Everything about this drill press says quality, whether you're a professional or a home do-it-yourselfer or woodworking hobbyist. To our delight, this model doesn't feature the belts and pulleys of the lesser machines; rather, there are two variable speed ranges—from 150 to 1100 rpm and 500 to 3200 rpm, suited to your material and bit size. The table is larger than those found on other brands with the same throat capacity, and bigger is always better where that's concerned. It rides extremely smoothly on a rack-and-pinion system that requires practically no effort. We like that the power switch is right on the front of the head, rather than on the side, for quick starts and stops. When we examined the 1/2-inch chuck, we found yet more quality in the Jacobs name. It runs like a dream with no play that we could discern, assuring a quality bore every time along its 6-inch stroke. It's hefty at 230 pounds, so there's no vibration whatsoever. Perfect for the cabinetmaker or exacting home woodworker.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its decent - but not great
Before buying this tool I found myself in a common predicament - I needed a grinder with some decent features and I didn't have a lot to spend on it.That being said, I chose this model for the following high points:

1.It has variable speed - mine has worked flawlessly thus far, but I use it at the lowest speed 80% of the time anyway.

2.The worklight is a huge plus - no more straining to see because you are in too much of a hurry to set up a proper light.

3.The combination of white and grey wheels - the "white" wheel does a great job of fine tuning the work done by the "grey" wheel.

Now for the downsides:

1.There is a fair amount of runout in the motor shaft. This doesn't affect what I use this thing for, but I can see where it would be a big issue for some.

2.The tool rests are terrible. If you mount them as instructed there is no way to get them square to the wheels.I had to shim the edges of the mounting brackets with thick washers to come anywhere close to square...

All of that said, I feel that this is not a terrible tool for what it is.I had no problems with assembly (10 minutes) and I find the power of the motor to be very adequate. If Delta were charging $20 less for this thing I would readily give it another star...

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
I've had a GR250 for slightly longer than the warranty period. In this time, I've only used it for a few hours, probably less than FIVE!The only use I had for a grinder was establishing a quick hollow grind on edge tools. The stock tool rests stink, so I had it set up on an MDF base with a Veritas rest.

Recently, I took up turning, so I've needed to use a grinder more.As soon as I started using the GR250 for serious work, I found excessive runout in the _shafts_, which no stone truing or balancing can correct. Also, my variable speed quit, and the grinder will no longer run at anything other than full speed.

Need a good grinder?Spend the cash for a Baldor or equivalent, 'cause this isn't a precision machine.

I have several Delta machines, including a DJ-20 and X5 Bandsaw, and have noticed that the quality of lower priced Delta products has really hit the wall over the last few years.Other than paint, marketing and advertising, I see no difference in quality between this unit and some of the $29-39 Chiwanese imports.

Last point - the design of the base on this unit prevents a OneWay Wolverine jig from being mounted underneath the wheels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Value with just a little to complain about
I really think this sander rates 4 1/2 stars.

In a nutshell...

PRO:
-Strong Motor (and it is wired 110 volts)

-Smooth Operation - no Vibrations

-This machine is nice and heavy (so be fore warned - I'm 6'6" and pretty beefy - I probably should have recruited a friend to help me get it together).

-Well Machined Parts

-Easy Belt and Disk Replacement

-Easy Ajustments: excellent tracking under use

-Good Fit and Finish

-Good Dust Collection: I have mine hooked up to a 2hp central system (about 20 feet away) and I have no complaints.

Neutral:
-They should offer the larger table for the disk as on the closed stand version.

-The belt platen would benefit from a graphite pad like the $190 Grizzley this sander replaced.

Cons:

-The supplied belt and Disk are abysmal quality. The belt shredded in about 10 minutes and the disk's adhesive was very weak. Both were tossed the same day it was first run.

-Marginal Manual: You get the feeling the person who wrote it NEVER put one together! Here's a tip - install the motor before installing the actual machine to the stand (turn the stand upside down and install the motor). The instructions would have you install the motor (about 50# and which hangs from a bracket) on your back!

It should be noted this is the same machine as the next one up Delta's lineup. For $400 more you get a closed stand, a dust bag, the motor is wires 220 volts, and the better table for the disk.IMHO not worth 60% more in price.

Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Delta Industrial 31-300 6" Belt/12" Disc Sanding Center
This machine has many good points. It is well constructed, it is sturdy and essentially unmovable. The tables are easy to align with the sanding surfaces. It has loads of power and can remove stock amazingly fast. However, to rate the dust collection system as poor gives it a compliment. It is abyssmal. You need to be outdoors or wear a dust mask when using the disc sander for any heavy sanding. The only place on the disc that collects any dust is when you sand on the outer 1 inch of the disc. Any further in than that and most of the dust come out the other side of the disc. A little detective work showed that there is only a small vacuum inlet (about 1 1/2 by 3 inches). Any dust that escapes this vent is blown back into the shop. The belt sander is only marginally better.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it but still too early to give 5 stars
I purchased this sander about two months ago from Tool C
