3-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill......bad batteries
I have been using this drill for about two months and the drill works fine (even though its Reconditioned). The batteries dont hold a charge compared to the ones I got with my Impact driver (brand new, not reconditioned).I think its got to do with them being reconditioned.

1-0 out of 5 stars did't last long
I have a Dewalt corded drill and plate jointer, and like them. This cordless I am sorry I bought. One battery will not keep a charge, and the clutch went out after only minor use.I also have a Makita and a Panasonic cordless drill. They have not broken, and I have had them twice as long as the DeWalt. The Makita was made in the U.S.The DeWalt and the Panasonic are made in Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid drill with plenty of torque, nice carry case
Disclaimer - I have no brand preference when I choose tools - it's based on quality, durability and merits of the tool. Not necessarily the best or most expensive. The only exception to this is, without bias or hesitation, the Milwaukee Super Sawzall, the 6521-21, 11.8 amp reciprocating saw - it's a beast, very powerful and smooth!

I have always been a little apprehensive about the runtime for the batteries of cordless tools. I had the search narrowed down to Milwaukee's 14.4 volt or Hitachi's 14.4 volt versions. I personally don't see the need to go beyond this level of drill unless you're driving screws in a deck all day. (My older DeWalt 5 amp VSR drill is fine for drilling holes and light duty screw driving, and the Makita 9.6v just doesn't do anything well but drill holes.)

That said, I wanted to see how it compared in terms of power/torque against my new corded Milwaukee 0302-20, which is a very serious drill (scary - it comes with a side handle for a reason!).

So far, I have no complaints. Here's the upside from a demolition job we did on a neighbour's sunroom - it's being replaced with a more energy efficient sunroom. It was painted metal panel sections with a styrofoam core, held together by aluminum trim and nut head screws.
1) I like the racheting mechanism in the keyless chuck - it is very good. (so is the Milwaukee's keyless chuck)
2) It's nice to have speed and torque settings too...
3) Cordless - nice battery runtimes, and you don't have to manage the extension cords on the roof (removing the screws with a nutdriver). We removed a lot of screws...
4) Quality of the tool - solid heft, but not super heavy (although I didn't have to raise it above my head often)
5) Nice balance with the pistol grip.
6) Very good price - plus a $25 off coupon makes this reconditioned tool very nice on the pocketbook, and a versatile drill/driver in your arsenal.
7) Efficient use of the carry case - dedicated sections for the batteries and the charger.
8) Quick charge times - faster than the 1 hour or so for the older Makita.
9) It may be a "reconditioned tool", but the only thing that showed this was the carry case. Everything else looked new.
10) Full DeWalt warranty.

The cons?
1) I agree about the comment by jhvincent for the reverse switch location. I belive the corded DeWalt 5 amp has a better idea - it's a lever, not a button, above the trigger. However, I soon was able to pay attention and not hit it after a few minutes. So it did become a negligible issue after a while.

Maybe I will find issues later on, but not much right now. It's got a spot in my tool box, that's for sure. I would not hesitate to recommend this great buy to anyone. Buy this kit at this price - it's very good!

I am buying a Bosch router kit soon, and either a Bosch or Makita sliding compound miter saw in the new future. But both Milwaukee and DeWalt have shown their quality, no question...

PS - the Sawzall "more than payed for itself today", was the comment from another worker. We easily sectioned up the walls and roof with it. I would estimate it saved at least 2 hours of grunt work (the caulking was very tough and sticky around the windows, but the Sawzall cut through it and the aluminum siding with ease).

5-0 out of 5 stars Throw away your old charger!
I purchased this charger at the same time I bought my 14.4 cordless drill (Firestorm). This charger fully charges your Dewalt or Firestorm batteries in less than an hour (depending on how low they are when placed in the charger). My two batteries are still going strong after more than three years of frequent home use (the tune-up mode definitely helps).

Never use the 6 hr battery killer that comes with your cordless tools. This charger is definitely worth the money, considering I would have spent at least twice as much on new batteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars It tunes them up
Replaced my old charger with this one.Made a big difference with my older batteries that would not take much of a charge.Gave some new life to them. If you are a user of cordless tools, you know that batteries are the big maintenance expense. While my figures are not scientifically valid, my best guess is that this charger will extend the life of the batteries at least 20 percent

5-0 out of 5 stars "Tune-Up" Makes this the Better Choice
I traded up to this charger after one of my old ones quit. The "tune-up" mode really does make a difference.I tried a side by side test with my remaining old non-tune-up charger.I charged two depleted 12v batteries for 10 hours, using the "tune-up" mode on this charger.I then ran them in the same drill, and there was a noticable increase in rpm and torque with the "tuned-up" battery. The "tune-up" mode does take 8 hours, but it is only necessary every 8-10 charges. As DeWalt explains, the cells in the battery are wired in series and the "tune-up" charges the downline cells completely, where fast charging only fills the first few cells. All cordless batteries are a series of 1.5v batteries enclosed in a case.To get a full charge, all the individual batteries need to fill completely.

If you have older batteries, this charger will give them new life.It is a worthwhile upgrade even for new batteries, as it will give them better performance and perhaps, extend their life. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you're looking to add a solid, reliable cordless impact wrench to your tool crib, the heavy-duty, 3/8-inch, DeWalt DW051K-2 12-volt cordless impact wrench might be worth considering. This mid-level impact wrench has everything you'll need to loosen and tighten tough bolts and drive fasteners through metal, concrete and wood surfaces. Plus, it's small enough (6-1/2 inches long and 3.5 pounds) to get into places larger units with comparable features simply cannot reach. But don't let its size fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a workhorse. The wrench churns out a whopping 1,200 in./lbs. of maximum torque with speeds ranging from 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 3/8-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll save the fifth star for later...
Having used many different brands of cordless drill/drivers over the past 15 years, I was curious about this new wave of impact drivers.I had the chance to use this DeWalt driver (a friend's) and I can report that I was extremely impressed with it.In all fairness, this isn't a comparison since I have never used any of the competitor's impact drivers, but the DeWalt was more than I thought it would be.

Power - there's all you would ever want here.I was driving 3" screws into treated lumber and quickly noticed two things. The driver didn't hesitate while driving the screws home and compared to my standard drill/driver I had to apply much less pressure on the rear of the gun to keep the bit from slipping on the screw head.

Size/Weight - You don't notice how much a good drill/driver weighs until you use something like this that is more powerful and yet weighs less.Though the size is tiny compared to what I am used to, it doesn't feel unnaturally so.

Value - though this is probably the best tool I have ever used to drive a screw, it is expensive so the vaulue per dollar isn't what it could be.If I were starting from scratch on a collection of tools, I would think seriously about this one.As it is, I already have two DeWalt drill/drivers and will probably not justify replacing them at this cost.

Overall, this is a great tool that I feel justifies the impact driver craze that is currently going on.If you build decks for a living, run to buy one of these. If you are a weekend warrior, get more bang for your buck by getting a good deal on a 12-14.4 volt drill/driver instead...

5-0 out of 5 stars great product!!!
This is a great buy and trust me you wont find a better price.I love this tool, it saves me a lot of time at work and is actually really lite.I know that almost every technician i work with at my dealership uses this tool and they all love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool
I am a professional mechanic and have used many cordless impact drivers. This is the best I have run across. I wish it was 14.4 volt so it would use the same batteries as drill but that is my only complaint. Plenty of power will break non impact sockets and small bolts beware. Lightweight and powerful. I will buy 18volt 1/2" impact in future when funds allow.
My recomendation BUY IT! ... Read more

Here's a compressor ready for the job site with the professional contractor. The oil-lubricated pump with cast iron cylinder gives you four cubic feet per minute at 90 psi, enough to run multiple tools off the dual universal couplers. It draws low amps, too, great for job-site conditions. The panel is protected between the two tanks, a feature we really like, and features large, easy-to-read gauges for tank pressure and regulated pressure, as well as the regulator and the two quick couplers. We like the ball-type tank drain design, too, as well as the roll bars that surround and protect the 2.7 horsepower motor. Another nice touch is the pegged wrap area for the power cord. The handle offers a well-balanced haul, and it's light enough for easy portability at 65 pounds. But don't let that fool you--this is one reliable workhorse.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Built for the 21st Century!
The specs say 15 Amps at 115 Volts. That gives 15x115=1725 watts. Divide by 745.7 (the number of watts per horsepower, by definition) and the result is about 2.313 horsepower. Apparently this "2.7 horsepower" machine makes about 0.387 horsepower spontaneously. That'll be great for on-site use at (significantly) reduced power if no electricity is available. Gotta get one today!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment
I bought this compressor for use in my home shop with the idea that it would also come in handy on some renovation projects that require portablity. When it arrived & I got it out of the box, I was very impressed with the solid construction & good design.Imagine my dismay when I cycled it to full pressure for the first time & heard a noticable hissing sound.I timed it, without any tools (or even a hose) attached & the compressor cycled after about 8 minutes.Examination of the area around the control panel revealed that the air was leaking from the regulator, exiting from a small hole in the regulator body.I contacted Amazon.com & they immediately offered to replace the compressor with another identical unit at no charge to me, including all shipping charges. The new compressor arrived at my front door before I could even get the old one shipped back (thank you Amazon.com for the outstanding customer service!).That same evening I got it unpacked, put in the oil & fired it up.The new unit had the exact same problem as the first one, only worse!!!It would only hold air for about 3-4 minutes before cycling. And again, I traced the problem back to a faulty regulator. Two in a row is enough for me -- for all I know, Amazon.com has a warehouse full of these defective units. On contacting them a second time, they agreed to take both units back & issue me a full refund.

Throughout this bad experience, Amazon.com has done everything possible to make it right for me.I am very much less impressed with DeWalt/Emglow quality assurance. It's pretty unbelievable that a problem this obvious wouldn't be caught at the factory.I won't have time to research & buy another compressor until after the Christmas holidays, but it's a safe bet that DeWalt is now at the bottom of my list.I'm very disappointed in a brand that I had come to associate with top quality & reliability.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid workhorse!
I researched many compressors before purchasing this one. What I liked about it the most was it was built to last!!! A solid steel roll cage frame, direct drive cast iron pump and it is oil lubed unlike the oil less Porter Cable that just burned up!!! But also sometimes it's the little things about a tool that make it a pleasure to use, like the ball drain valve that will empty the compressor in less than five seconds, a lot less noisy than my old pancake unit and a quality soft rubber cord. Sure a cord is a very small part of the overall tool, but i can't stand it when i spend hundreds of dollars of a tool and it comes with a cord that's impossible to wrap up when it's 30 degrees ( makes me wonder what other cheap parts are inside )One final thing i would like to add is this unit produces far less moisture than most similar units!!! I use a moisture filter on both of the quick disconnects and i'm sure the air running throught them is dry, especially for the oil less tools i have. ... Read more

This is a great deal! The money I saved buying these blades allowed me to buy other accessories for my saw. The thin kerf of these blades allows for accurate cuts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Garbage
I'm a contractor/carpenter in Athens, GA and a complete tool snob. I pride myself on having the best tools on the market, and I thought that this belt sander would be no exeption. Boy was I wrong. What a waste of time. I bought this to use sanding heart pine at a cabin in the mountains. Imagine my frustration at having to take this thing totally apart and not being able to get it to track properly after using for only a couple hours, not to mention that after changing the belt twice, the belt tension knob stopped working. If you buy this sander, be prepared for all the fun you'll have changing belts while the engine is hot.

And that was DeWalt sander #1. Now I'm on #3. (Fortunately I know the guys in Tool World at my local Lowe's.) Yesterday the tracking device fouled up so bad that it ate the belt and shredded the rubber on the rear wheel, making the tool completely unusable. So hey, take it from me, if you wanna buy this sander because it looks pretty, or because it has more bells and whistles than the Porter Cable and others, be my guest, but you'd be wise to buy two at once so when your first one screws up, you won't waste an entire workday hunting up a receipt, driving to the store, and exchanging it, which, given the chances, is exactly what you'll do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kevin - Appleton, Wisconsin
I bought this belt sander kit at Woodworker's Depot in Green Bay, WI.I used it for less than 20 minutes and it literally burned up.I was sanding hemlock beams, and yes, I was running it continuously for the 20 min, but I thought DeWalt products were meant for heavy duty work.I was very disappointed in this sander; especially when trying to return it to where I purchased it, because they tried to tell me that DeWalt had only a 30 money back guarntee, when it is actually 90 days (what a poor retailer since they're the largest power tool retailer in northeast Wisconsin).

I bought the Milwaukee belt sander (4X24) from Grainger.Let me tell you, you'll pay the price for Milwaukee, but this new belt sander burns me out!!!!! My advice, if Milwaukee makes it, buy Milwaukee, then Porter Cable, then (maybe) DeWalt.

3-0 out of 5 stars New doesn't mean improved
I like Dewalt, and have several tools made by them. When I came into the market for a belt sander, this was on the top of my list. Not so much for the name, but the features seemed to make this a solid choice. Went to Lowes, bought one and when I got a chance to use it, was completely disappointed. It seems agressive enough, but the tracking stinks. The belt continues to roll off. I have the tracking knob almost completely loosened, and it still didn't help.
Brought it to be serviced. They fixed it, but after less than an hour of use, the same problem. I'll bring it back again, but between time and gas spent, it sure isn't worth the hassel. I like Dewalt, but I don't like this belt sander. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars lasted 4 months
I've had this unit for about 4 months and just today had to take it in for service. I was making trim in a router table and (unknown to me) it overheated. Apparently there isn't any sort of thermal protection built into the motor.

Even after cooling it off, it ran at 1/3 speed drawing about twice the normal amount of current. Internal inspection (forgetting for a moment that bit about disassembly by unauthorized service centers) revealed fairly severe pitting of the commutator in several places.

In short, DeWalt would have been wise to include a thermal cutout .

4-0 out of 5 stars Very solid product
The components of this product are some of the best I've ever seen. The plunge base is of very good quality and I enjoy using it. I don't rely heavily on a router in my day to day projects so the De Walt suits me perfectly. If you're a cabinet maker you may want to go for something with a little more power. Personally I found this router's size and weight to be ideal for my working environment. I'm constantly switching bases and the dewalt base attachments are beautiful. The engine pops out very easily, with no chance of accidental release. The engine is quite small and easy to handle for changing bits and the like. I think this is a wonderful product. ... Read more

I use this with my Paslode; 16 Gauge and Framing nailers, I hang then trim doors, sometimes rebuild sills and headers. I also do various trim/frame carpentry on other projects.

If you are worried about changing the oil its only once a year!
If you are worried about operating on a slope, i have always found a flat spot to locate it in, even roofers leave theirs on the ground, just put on more hose. Who wants to carry this up a ladder anyway?!

I would never buy an air compressor without a user serviceable airfilter!
I would never buy one of those oil less types

5-0 out of 5 stars Best compact hands down.
This bad boy will do the work of a much larger compressor. It will easily run several guns on a framing crew or even a roofing crew. The HP rating is a little misleading compared to other compressors. 2 HP isn't max , it's continuous. I have one of these (Emglo 2HP) that's been abused and used hard for several years now with no problems ,only good dependable air. I highly recommend it. If I could change one thing I would make it quieter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miter Saw Vertical Clamp
Clamp works very well, and the push button release is super nice. You won't notice any wobble if you get it tight.I did notice that with my DW706 it impedes cutting a 45 degree cut on the same side as the clamp (arm won't come all the way down).the solution is to change the miter to the other side of the clamp. That's my only "con".Therefore two clamps wouldn't work if you were cutting 45's.But it's a solid clamp and well built.Works well to hold down even 2x6x10's while you're cutting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice-but pricey!
I ended up getting a pair and they are very good quality! The push button quick adjust works great and I really use these clamps alot. I highly recommend them!No regrets!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice clamp, but a bit pricey
Very sturdy.Well engineered. The push button releases the clamp and it can be quickly adjusted.Releasing the button engages the clamp shaft, and you give it a twist to apply clamping pressure.Done.The clamp head has a rubber cover, so it not only prevents maring your work, but provides additional grip.Get two of these so you can clamp on both sides of the blade. They can be easily moved out of the way (swing it behind the fence, still attached to the saw) when not needed, or just as easily removed completely.I leave mine attached to the DW708.

This accessory is up to the level of quality I expect from DeWalt.Highly recommended.

For the price these should come in pairs, but keeping my fingers where they are is important so I spent the money to get them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No need for cords, unless you want them....
I have the entire 24V kit, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the AC/DC converter feature, so that when the uncommon dead battery situation happens, you're not left without power. DeWalt: How about a 24V jig saw, plate jointer, miter saw and handheld planer? I'll buy them whenever they come out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a burning torch
I cut a 3.5" solid hardened steel blower shaft in half with this saw with one blade, faster than if I hauled a oxy/act rig up to the roof, or ran around trying to tap off power somewhere for a corded saw. This saw never stalled once and still had plenty of power left in it. This is one heck of a time and energy saver for me. Believe it from me, I'm a Commercial Air Conditioning Repairman.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I know so-far about this new saw
Having just bought the older 24v Dewalt recip saw, I was curious to see whether I should return and upgrade for the new model.I haven't tried this new saw yet, but here's what I know.

Firstly, Dewalt assured me that the saw itself has changed very little from the old model. That being said, this saw is a winner! This thing has a durable look & feel, torque, stroke, etc. that put the 18 v line to shame. It cuts fast and accurately.Though heavier than most cordelss models, it is very well balanced when it matters most... cutting.

The batteries and charger are the main updates.
1. The new kit comes with two batts... the old kit had one.
2. The new batteries are ~2.4 amp hrs, vs. 1.7 with the old (longer run-time).
3. The fans supposedly extend the life-cycle of the saw.

This being said, if I was just shopping for a Dewalt recip, I would buy the new kit. This is especially true if I didn't have additional 24v Dewalt tools or additional batteries. Two batteries are definately better than one. If, however, you already have some 24v tools... the reconditioned kit might be a good value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilot Point makes drilling a breeze.
I don't know about the long term issue of having to shrapen, but around the house they are awesome. I had a small 10 piece set of the Black and Decker Bullets with a similar tip but where made of a different metal. They where great, but only went to a 1/4 inch, and though I have never had a problem with them slipping in either of my Firestor drills. The non-slip shaft is also a nice feature on the larger drill bits. It's hard to believe the difference in drilling with the Pilot Piont bits it really is amazing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with these
The pilot point is a good idea but they do not last long. Buy a regular set of bits instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bits while they last . . . .
I am a big fan of this set and of DeWalt's pilot point drill bits. However, once the pilot point dulls it is difficult to sharpen, and individual replacement pilot point bits are hard/impossible to find. So it's either go back to regular bits for replacement, or buy an entirely new kit. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Here's a great collection of DeWalt tools at a really amazing price and they all use the same 18-volt batteries. The 1/2-inch adjustable clutch drill/driver/hammer drill's high-torque motor delivers 450 inch/pounds of torque for drilling with large bits and driving large-shank screws with no worries of lock-up because the third speed is 38 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 2,000 rpm. The chuck's carbide jaws won't let go of even the smallest bit. The DW938 reciprocating saw has nice ergonomics--good balance, a comfortable grip, and it's not unwieldy, even with the battery attached. We particularly like the keyless blade clamp that lets you change blades without touching the blade or reciprocating shaft. The 6-1/2-inch circular saw is one of favorites for its light weight, power and ease. You can see the blade on the left side, so you've got great cutting-line visibility. Want to bevel? No problem. And it's even got a rip fence. The impact driver is only 6-1/2 inches long, but it delivers 1,600 in-lbs of max torque; its heavy-duty impacting mechanism directs torque to the fastener without kickback. Its fits into places other impact drivers can't and is what you need for automotive work, farm machinery or anywhere else you need super torque. The flex-neck flashlight's wide-angle beam is brighter than a traditional flashlight, and you'll find all kinds of uses for it. A nice touch we appreciate is the spare Xenon bulb, so you'll never be in the dark. All together, quite a neat deal.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt Chip Collection Bag
I purchaesd this so I could remove my Dewalt 735 Planer from my dust collection system and use a seperate trash can with a trash bag. I used a plastic trash can first with the brackets for the handles cut away so the bag would fit tighter to the can. The planer blows the sawdust out with so much force that it kept blowing the bag off the can. I next tried a steel trash can. Same problem. Contrary to all my other Dewalt tools, I'm very disappointed with this chip collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars DW7353 Makes Chip Collecting Easy
Not having space for a dust collection system, the blower on the DW735 helped me decide on the DW735 planer. The planer works really well at evacuating the chips and chip collection is a necessity. I tried using a trash can that I had but some dust came out around the handles; the handles were molded up near the can opening keeping the hood from a tight fit.
I bought a 33 gallon Roughneck wheeled container at Lowe's that had a lip all around the edge and that solved the problem. I put plastic bags in the can and the hood over everything and get no escaped dust and easy emptying.
The instructions say to not let the hose lay over the side of the can. I put a "J" hook in the ceiling and use a rope loop to hold up the hose so it's adjustable and out of the way, simple and effective. This thing works just as it should - I'm very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW7353 Chip Collection Accessory for DW735
Wow!Am I glad I got this with my plainer. It collects almost all the chips and dust from the plainer. The drawstring top for the trashcan makes it very versitile.I have a very, very small shop so the ability to use a smaller trashcan adds to it's value.Using the plainer without it creates a huge mess.If you haven't used a plainer before and are forewarned on the amoung of sawdust you'll still be amazed. If you don't have a central system to hook your plainer up to, I highly recommend getting this.It will be worth every penny.I got is even though another rater talked about the hose inconviently located right above the outfeed table and it can get in the way, but I simply pull the hose up over the top of the machine and it's no problem.Again, if you don't have a central collection system...get this. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this ripoff - Buy an LED flashlight instead
Many of you must have noticed that various manufacturers of power tools are "giving away" flashlights with cordless drills, etc.Well, this is how they make money, by charging $5 for ONE flashlight bulb! What a ripoff. In my experience, these light bulbs are cheaply manufactured and blows out in matter of weeks, not years.

I recommend that you search for "4-LED Flashlight" on Amazon.com and, for a bit more money, buy one of these LED models for which you NEVER have to replace the bulbs.

3-0 out of 5 stars let there be light

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice cut - poor material holder - expensive to operate
I have owned this saw nearly a year and have just started using it extensively. It is like anything else in life I guess, it has it's good points, and it's bad ones.

The good news is that it does do a beutiful job of cutting.Clean, burr free, and quick. The bad news is that the blades are terribly expensive and not nearly as long lived as advertised.I would estimate that I get about 3-4 abrasive blades worth of cutting out if it before it is time to think about sharpening it.In my neck of the woods it costs nearly 50 cents a tooth ($36.00) to sharpen, so I can't say that it is cost effective. The material holding vice doesn't seem to be strong enough for the amount of vibrations you can sometimes get with this saw.(Mine is held on with a snap ring that sometimes falls off without warning).Push it a little too fast through some small diameter rod (5/16" in my case) and it will rip it right out of the holder, total the blade, and scare the heck out of anyone misfortunate enough to be standing where the material got tossed.(Only happened once, very light down pressure is essential, but they don't tell you that in manual that came with mine.)

I tried using Freud blades but was told by their factory tech support that they do not allow re-sharpening of their blades, and that the 14" Speed Demon was not sold in the U.S. but boot legged in through a third party.

Regardless, the theory is great. If they could just come up with longer lasting blades (yes even with very light pressure, they wear out quick) and possibly a better vice arangement (The one that came with my Dewalt abrasive blade chop saw is better designed and more durable), I could recommend them whole heartedly.Right now I could only say that it depends on what you are using it for.If you have a lot of cutting to do and your time is expensive, you might be able to justify the expense by the time savings and prep savings (No grinding to remove burrs, at least until it gets dull). For the rest of us that just wanted a good cost effective way to cut lots of steel, the abrasive blade seems to be the better way to go for now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clean cut is a treat
I haven't tried the Porter-Cable multi-cutter saw, so I can't compare them, but after a couple dozen cuts in steel angle and tubing (up to 1/4" wall thickness) I'm very happy with the DeWalt. The ultra-smooth cut surface is remarkable compared with the ways most of us have cut metal all our lives. I'll be amazed if the blade really holds out for a thousand cuts, but several hundred before resharpening would still seem pretty good to me, considering the labor saved and the great results. I'm hanging on to the abrasive chop saw to handle hardened alloy shafts, spring steel, etc.; but I'm sold on the multi-cutter for most metal cuts. It IS one loud mama, and has a tendency to trip a 15-amp circuit breaker with its startup surge, but I can't blame the tool for my under-powered shop....

5-0 out of 5 stars Many refinements over the P-C
I bought this saw after wearing out my Porter-Cable dry cut saw. It's every bit as good as the P-C, and has a couple of nice design features to distinguish it.

1) The hand-lock for the fence and miter adjustment is great.P-C's saw requires using Allen wrenches for adjustment, which is time-consuming.(Also, the holes in the Allen screws fill up with swarf from the saw, so just getting the wrench into the screw head can be a project.)Adjustments are easy and basically instantaneous.

2) Horizontally oriented control handle and switch is very nice.Because of the way you run a saw like this (more below), the rgonmoics are much better than the P-C.

3) Pin-and-socket saw arm retainer.OH YEAH!P-C uses an old-fashioned chain-and-hook contraption to hold the saw arm down, which can be troublesome to engage. The Dewalt locks down just like their woodworking chop saws: hold the arm down and push in the retaining pin.

4) Quieter in operation than the P-C saw.

I am not a shill for Dewalt; I loved my P-C dry cut saw.I never realized the design could be this much better.

An important note for any dry-cut saw users: THIS IS NOT AN ABRASIVE CHOP SAW! I noticed complaints about blade life in some of the other reviews.Well, if you run this saw like an old-timey abrasive wheel chop saw, you won't get any blade life out of it either. The secret: minimal downward pressure.Rest your hand on the handle with just enough weight to keep the saw arm moving downward, and let the blade do all the work.If the blade throws more than a couple of tiny sparks once in awhile, you're pushing too hard, and the blade will suffer.I was able to make several thousand cuts in heavy stock with my P-C saw before the blade needed sharpening, an this one behaves similarly.

If you're doing a lot of work, get a spare blade.Having the carbide blade sharpened usually runs about 25 cents per tooth, and if you have a spare there's no downtime... ... Read more
