Editorial Review

When it comes to cutting intricate curves, DeWalt's 20-inch scroll saw delivers precision operation quietly and easily. In fact, everything about the saw is designed for convenience. The on/off switch and speed control, as well as the flexible dust-blowing arm, sit on the upper portion of the front arm, inches away from where you're working, so you don't have to reach around the tool to make adjustments. The wide, teardrop-shaped cast-iron table provides plenty of support for materials and bevels 45 degrees each way, great for tackling tricky inlays and shadow boxes. DeWalt placed the pivot points right up front, rather than in the back, which seems to reduce blade vibration. As with many DeWalt saws, this scroll saw doesn't require tools to change the cutting blades, which means it takes you less time and effort to make those drop-in cuts. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars super scroll saw
Hi folks; Just a line to let you know how good the DeWalt scroll saw is. I have four scroll saws, craftsman, dremel, delta, and Dewalt. I also have used most high cost top brands and I can say the DeWalt is the best that I have ever used. Almost no vibration, easy blade changes, large table, quiet and I would recomend this saw over all others. I have been woodworking for many years and it is rare these days to see a tool of this quality. Craftsman would be a good low entry saw if you don't want to spend more for a more user friendly saw. Hope this review helps someone out there. good luck,,,,Owen Smith

4-0 out of 5 stars good or great?
This is one fine saw its like driving a BMWcompared to a VW bug on bad roads. The only 2 problems I have had are the lower blade chuck and the on off switch. If you buy one and live aways from the repair shop be sure to get an extra on off switch it takes just a few minutes to put one in.Its a good idea to get an extre blade chuck both are the same part number. Keep the table clean and waxed and be sure to clean up the ends if the blades with sand paper also buff the table top with 300+ grite sandpaper befor waxing. The work piece hold down does make a fine hat holder, better than throwing it away.Have fun and enjoy spending the money you have saved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent belt for the money
Has performed well, and has lots of space for tools. Not too heavy, but since it fits so much, I have filled it pretty heavy.Searched through many rigs before deciding on this one and would buy it again for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Guaranteed Tough!
Working as a builder in Ocean City, this pouch certainly deserves the DeWalt name. The weather here can be very difficult at times. From the frostbite of ocean winds, being caught in an instant thunderstorm or the heat of a summer's day, the DeWalt pouch has not met its match. Thanks for adding this newproduct to your line. Besides, it matches the rest of my tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST
I believe there is no equal in the industry to the ridged unequaled brute strength of Dewalt products. That is just one of the reasons that make this product so cool. These bags are equiped with all the pockets and pouches you can dream of and will ever need in the toughest most brutal lines of work. They are realy a great investment if you need and depend on the things you spend your green on, not to mention they look tough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality Generator.
This Dewalt generator is ,without question, one of the nicest onthe market. It's level of design, preformance and finish is the best available today. I have used many generators, from various manufactures and I would say that this Dewant unit compares with the super-duty,heavy construction, units I've used. You can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Little Generator I Have Seen (In a class of its own)
As always, DeWalt exceeded my expectations. This gem arrived in perfect condition.Once I had completed assembly and added oil and fuel, I gave a very light tug on the rope to get a feel for how much resistance it would offer. It started!Have only had it a few weeks, but it works just as advertised. The automatic idle is a very nice feature which really keeps noise down when there is no load.Note - be sure to follow instructions, since the generator is shipped without oil.If you like to jump ahead, do not put in fuel or oil before assembling wheels and lifting hook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pale by comparison
I am a General Contracter in MD. I've owned several Dewalt drills. One old 12v was left on the driveway and run over by a Chevy Suburban and still runs beautifully. However the 18v is the opposite. We have gone through two batterys and was told at the dewalt center they wear out faster. At 14 months the clutch failed and I was told when replacing the clutch the chuck had to be replaced as well. The tool has cost me 250.00 excluding the purchase price. Using several drills on the jobsite the Big Panasonic eats the competition for lunch. The battery lasts 3 to 4 times as long. Better balance. Better tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Having done commercial AC for 2 years, this drill proved invaluable.Having used last year's equivalant Dewalt has improved greatly on a tried and true design. The 3 speed is useful as is now 3 batteries can be stored in the case(1 in the drill). The pistol grip is more useful than a T-grip as it applies in-line pressure. The workmanship was flawless as is the new 1/2 chuck. the new chuck with carbide teeth really does as promised and holds bits much better. The only downfall is the battery clip. Though never having a battery fall off it still seems a to loose for comfort.A tip:paint the battery and drill and off color. That's why I bought a new one, someone envied my old Dewalt more than I did. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The DeWalt DW621K is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. Itruns quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepower motor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of 8,000 to24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. It has asafety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And the list goeson. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621K as the best is amatter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of a routeris going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage. --CarlThress ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good if bought on clearance - bad if paid full price
Pluses - Has a good motor, spins almost like a dentist drill.Good plunge action.I like its size.Good speed control.Good dust collection.

Minus - Base is poorly designed and I can't use a straight edge with it.The casting of the base is rough and not straight and the base plate edge is not a good reference for the center. My Porter Cable 8529 base plate is better referenced. At least it lands on a 32 inch gradient on my strait edge.I will make a base plate to use in conjunction with a bushing so that I can use a staight edge for dados in plywood.

The bushing center is off by about .025" toward the right (fixed handle). It is at least centered between front and back.

I hate the plunge lock mechenism.I want the handle to act like a handle that I can grab without fear of unlocking the plunge lock and having the router pop up.This would be real bad if using a splining bit or a keyhole bit.

I like the position of the PC 8529 dust collector better. The dewault dust port extension gets in the way when inverting the router to change bushings, bits.

I like the PC 8529 height adjustment better. The Dewault has two height adjusters. The micro adjust knob on the Dewalt is for veneer work or tweeking once you've set the main height adjustment and made a test cut. Also, one turn of the micro adjust doesn't correspond to a convenient gradient like 1/8".The PC height adjustment is one continuous thread and each turn is 1/8".Although cumbersome turning the knob, you can get 59/64" without a test cut.The PC height adjust is however, better suited for the router table

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Plunge Router!
Absolutely a great all purpose plunge router kit!As stated in other reviews this is not the best choice if you are focusing on primary use in a router table because of the on/off switch location. But, everything else is great!I'm very happy with the quality of construction and performance given me by this outer. This unit is definitely one of the best routers in its class. It has all the features one could possibly want. I recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the plunge, the DeWalt 621.
Let me start by saying I don't believe a "perfect tool" exists, but the DeWalt 621 is close.

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago.I insist on good research.I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price.First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart.

Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529.I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price.I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better.I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice.I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free.

When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?"The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner.Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one.I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in.It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan.It was music to my ears.Wheeew was the sound we both made!

I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second.I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load.I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table topand needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface.I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect.Next job.1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature).

The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!).Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines.I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs.

As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers.Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to.The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever.

The Pro's:

**Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments
**Truly functional vacuum system (It really [has power]!)
**Smooth electronic controlled startup/feedback with ample power
**Good spindle lock and collett design
**Good quality of fit/finish

The Con's:

**Unusual base design with smaller surface area
**Unusual power switch (Designed for safety, but so has the P.C. 7529)

Summary:Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool.Or is it just an adult toy?Hmmm.... ... Read more

Editorial Review

This DeWalt circular saw is a rugged tool designed with professional carpenters' needs in mind. It has a 15 amp motor that produces a whopping 2,075 watts, which is equivalent to 2-3/4 horsepower. In less scientific terms those numbers mean this saw can slice through lumber like a tornado through a trailer park. If that's a little too fast for you, it also comes with an electric brake for quick stops. The generous 5-1/2-inch base pivots for depth of cut and bevels on a ball-joint mechanism that offers smoother, faster adjustments than the simple hinge arrangement typically found on other saws. It has a bevel capacity of 0 to 50 degrees, and--like the depth-of-cut gauge--the bevel gauge can be easily recalibrated if the saw takes a tumble on the job. Depth-of-cut adjustments are made by unscrewing the front handle a bit, adjusting to the desired depth, and screwing it back down tight. This operation is so smooth it can be done without even changing your grip on the saw, reducing downtime between cuts. The saw's construction is solid throughout and it should live a long life, even on the toughest job sites. Blade changes are quick, thanks in part to the easy-to-reach shaft lock button; however, onboard storage of the blade-changing wrench would be an improvement. This is a great tool for serious professionals in need of serious cutting power. At 12.3 pounds, it isn't the lightest model available, but big power doesn't come in small packages, and 7-1/4-inch sidewinder circular saws don't get any burlier than this. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, but get a good blade!
Well, I have yet to buy a DeWalt tool that I haven't been happy with, and this saw is no exception. This saw makes consistent cuts and has a ton of great features.I would make two suggestions when buying it that some people may overlook:
First, I would buy a quality blade for use with your intended projects rather than the one included (it cuts, but as with most blades included with saws, probably isn't going to satisfy your needs)
Second, I would strongly suggest picking up the optional rip fence (DW3278).You can usually find it up for around $10.00, and it makes long straight cuts infinitely easier.Definitely a good investment!
Nevertheless, I am extremely happy with this saw.THe only reason it got 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the included accessories (and lack of an included rip fence).

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is a power tool!
After my hand-me-down black and decker (made a few decades ago, when black and decker wouldn't get snickers) finally bit the dust, I needed to get a new circular saw. I picked this one up at the blue home store, and have been very pleased. I've heard many good things about the grey, blue, and red ones, but this one is a beast. Feels good and sturdy too. One word of caution, this model DeWalt is pretty heavy compared to others. If you're doing a lot of work it will wear you out, but thats also why it can saw through things like butter... Power.

1-0 out of 5 stars Now made in China
Just received my DW3178 blade from Amazon and see it is now made in China. Looked carefully on the Amazon site and couldn't find where it is made. For me there are too many other choices to buy a chinese blade, no matter how it cuts. Also wish Amazon more clearly showed country of origin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quailty at a fair price
Ok so I went from a steel blade that came with my skilsaw, to this, and can't praise the dewalt high enough. It cuts easily through 2x stock, and just as easily and clean through plywood. I doubt I'll go thru more then one blade a year, which for the price I paid its a small investment into a quality blade. And I would do it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars good blade, but there are others
This blade is a very nice blade. it cuts smoothly and I have never had it bind on me. But it is the same caliber as the porter cable riptide blades. I use this most frequently because its what my boss supplies to us for use in our saw. but it is inexpensive and a great value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll save the fifth star for later...
Having used many different brands of cordless drill/drivers over the past 15 years, I was curious about this new wave of impact drivers. I had the chance to use this DeWalt driver (a friend's) and I can report that I was extremely impressed with it. In all fairness, this isn't a comparison since I have never used any of the competitor's impact drivers, but the DeWalt was more than I thought it would be.

Power - there's all you would ever want here. I was driving 3" screws into treated lumber and quickly noticed two things. The driver didn't hesitate while driving the screws home and compared to my standard drill/driver I had to apply much less pressure on the rear of the gun to keep the bit from slipping on the screw head.

Size/Weight - You don't notice how much a good drill/driver weighs until you use something like this that is more powerful and yet weighs less. Though the size is tiny compared to what I am used to, it doesn't feel unnaturally so.

Value - though this is probably the best tool I have ever used to drive a screw, it is expensive so the vaulue per dollar isn't what it could be. If I were starting from scratch on a collection of tools, I would think seriously about this one. As it is, I already have two DeWalt drill/drivers and will probably not justify replacing them at this cost.

Overall, this is a great tool that I feel justifies the impact driver craze that is currently going on. If you build decks for a living, run to buy one of these. If you are a weekend warrior, get more bang for your buck by getting a good deal on a 12-14.4 volt drill/driver instead...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for around the house
I remodelled my deck last summer, and used this to fasten the new decking (5/4" x 6" Trex boards). With a fresh charge, I found I could drive about 50 2-1/2" composite deck screws, with no predrilling, before the battery needed recharging. It's not the ideal tool for someone who does this professionally, but it worked great for me.Since then, it has come in handy for dozens of things around the house. In particular, it's very good at driving Tapcon concrete screws. The impact action produces a great deal of torque for its small size, but it lacks a clutch, which makes it easy to twist the heads off screws. That aside, it has lived up to all of my expectations, so I think it merits 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool in 2 decades!
Being a door installer, I ordered this tool as soon as it came out.Awesome! Drives hinge screws in with no problem. Drills up to 1/4" bits without impacting. Where was this tool 5 years ago? My 18v drills are semi-retired, who needs a corded drill now. An earlier reviewer said he had problems finding hex drill bits. Most home improvement stores carry them in sets and you can sharpen them accurately with a Drill Doctor sharpening system when they dull. But as always we want more speed, can't get enough. I'm sure that with 2 brands out now that are faster, Dewalt will step up to the plate and deliver the knockout punch, til the next round at least. You can't go wrong with this one. 71. DEWALT DW077KIK 18-Volt Self-Leveling Cordless Rotary Laser Kit with Construction Tripod
by DeWalt
Tools & Hardware

Asin: B00006S7D6

Editorial Review

When leveling has to be laser precise, the DeWalt 18-volt self-leveling rotary laser kit gets the job done. Accurate to within 1/8 of an inch per 100 feet, the laser gives off a high-power beam visible up to 100 feet. A digital laser detector (not included in this package) can increase the working range to a distance of 600 feet and helps when trying to locate the laser beam in bright-light conditions. The laser's rotary head offers four speeds. Slower speeds produce a brighter beam, while the higher speed settings produce a more solid light. The kit is listed as a Class IIIA laser product and complies with all the corresponding requirements and regulations. A wall mount and built-in tripod and floor mounts make setting up the laser kit a breeze, while a protected rotary head and weatherproof design ensure indoor and outdoor durability for any job site. The kit includes a laser target card, which aids in locating and marking the laser beam as it crosses over the card. Magnets hold the card securely to ceiling track or steel studs for quickly determining both level and plumb positions. Red-tinted laser-enhancement glasses also improve laser beam visibility under bright-light conditions or over long distances. A wireless remote control makes one-person setup and operation pain-free and fast. --Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty sander
A six inch random orbital sander is intended for rapidly removing material from large surfaces (eg. table top).It is not a detail sander and should not be expected to be lightweight and agile.Use the right tool for the job.I am very happy with mine.It does a very good job of quickly sanding large areas.Unlike the competition (from a certain black/grey company), this sander provides integrated dust collection. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is two fold.First, the gear mechanism makes a grinding noise (like it is going to break). My Dewalt biscuit jointer made a similar noise, but has lasted for years.Second, the variable speed has a very narrow range of speeds (ie. highest speed is really fast, lowest speed is still really fast).

2-0 out of 5 stars My first random orbit
After using orbital sanders for years I decided to get the random orbit.I have been a big fan of Dewalt and did not hesitate on purchasing this tool. The dust collection for the most part does not work. The sanding qualities are first class. But six inch paper is hard to find. But I stocked up when I bought the sander.I have had to replace the switch after it quit working.Overall It sands well but fails in the dust collection department.Dewalt could do better.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good and the bad.
I have had this tool for several years now and bought it mostly because of the Dewalt name. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to expectations. First, 6 inch hook and loop pads are becoming harder to find. It seems that 5 inch pads are the current craze, especially adhesive pads. Secondly, this tool is noisy and heavy. It is hard think of it as a finishing sander. The collection bag is a joke and must have been designed by the team of Moe, Larry and Curly. The wire that gives the bag it's shape and stiffness poked a hole in the fabric the second day I used it. Very poor design. Not worthy of the Dewalt name. Its only saving grace is that due to its weight it will take rough stock off quickly. ... Read more

Two things set this tool apart from its classmates: the largenail capacity and the rear-loading magazine that lets you lock andload, or load and lock. The tool is light, comfortable, and sturdy, features DeWalt's ingenious tool-free jam-clearing mechanism, andoffers a fantastic line of sight. The sliding depth adjustment isfurther evidence of DeWalt's creative problem-solving abilities. Unlockit with your index finger, slide the adjustment with your other hand, and you're ready to fire. This model has a nice plus in the 360-degreeswivel exhaust cap. Great pad, too--it didn't mar anything to which weintroduced it. i have owned this nailer since it was first introduced.i've loved it since the moment i started using it.i have the angled and brad nailers as well.i have my own remodeling business and we're constantly using these nailers.i've never had any misfires or jamming issues.i would have to say that the top notch detail to this gun is that they all come with belt hooks.i'd say that dewalt has a niche with that one idea alone.

Whether at home, in the basement, or at a remodeling site, DeWalt's 5.8 amp jig saw makes cutouts the way they should be: quick and hassle-free. Vibration-dampening rubber grips soak up the shocks, making it easier to hold the line, and the counterbalance design places the weight squarely over the shoe. Need a fast cut? Flip the orbital adjustment switch to position four (maximum swing) and cruise through material at up to 3,100-inch-long strokes per minute. For more precise cuts in high-visibility areas, use the zero setting (orbitless motion) for a cleaner edge. Thanks to an adjustable blower on the right side, sawdust is whisked out of the line of sight, a feature we always appreciate in a jig saw. The shoe locks on this saw seem sturdier than the one on DeWalt's cordless model and the shoe easily adjusts--with a tool-free lever--to slide forward or backward for flush cutting, and also bevels 45 degrees to both sides. No wrenches are required to change blades, either: simply pull and turn the top, remove the old blade, and replace it with the desired universal or T-shank--a handy, timesaving design that is unique to DeWalt. --Justin Paul ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Worst DeWalt I've owned.
First, let me state that I generally like DeWalt tools (can't say enough good things about my dw364 7-1/4" circ saw). This poseur, Bosch-wannabee, on the other hand, is horrible.I recently bought a Bosch 1587AVS, and I can't get over the similarities between the two as far as features and design.Beyond these basics, when it comes to functionality, the Bosch wins hands down.

The DeWalt still works, but after ruining about $60 worth of panels I was cutting for a small home project, I immediately went to my local tool purveyor, and picked up the Bosch.Needless to say, after a half hour of cutting with the Bosh, I knew I had found a lifelong keeper, and gave the DeWalt away to a friend who'll be using it once in a blue moon for small projects. Here are my problems with the 321K:

1.TRACKING.Cannot get this thing to track straight. After ruining one panel because the saw drifted, I clamped on a straight edge/guide to a fresh, new panel. While using the guide I forced the saw's footplate/base to follow the straight guide (no easy task, as it kept wanting to pull). This did not work since the pull was so strong, the blade actually popped out of the roller guide even with the base hugging the guide, resulting in a horrendous cut.Another panel ruined. In addition, the wacky tracking also results in a fair share of bent blades. I've used $50 Black and Deckers that tracked straight lines more accurately. The Bosch isn't absolutely perfect, but it's head and shoulders above the DeWalt when it comes to tracking, and the tolerances are now close enough for my needs. Bosch's 1590 appears to have a heavy duty blade guide for those who need very precise tracking.

2.BLADE HOLD.Using U-shank blades, I found that blades periodically pop out after extended use.The keyless blade change system, while convenient, just doesn't provide enough grip to keep a tight hold on blades. It seems that the system loosens from vibration after extended use. Might also have to do with the additional vibration caused by blade bind from tracking issues. This is dangerous, and frustrating to say the least. In comparison, I have not encountered this problem with the Bosch.

Pass on the 321K, and get a Bosch instead.I think Bosch has the reputation as the gold standard in jig saws, and after using one of their products, I can see why.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
I own several DeWalt tools and love them (circular saw, cordless drills), and so I figured this jigsaw would be similarly great. WRONG! The first unit was so bad (tracking and square) that I returned it thinking I must have purchased a lemon (after all - yellow...?). The second unit was identically bad. Blower didn't work, tracking was horrible, cuts were VERY out of square. My 20 year old B&D, "purchased" with green stamps, was far better. The only good thing about this saw is that it has lots of power.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one
Could not get the blade to track stright. The saws shaft is lose and will shift while using. I have many other DeWalt tools I have been very happy with, but this saw stinks. I sold mine at a loss and bought a Bosch ***** stars for the Bosch. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T waste your money
I give this sander a zero stars but the case 5 stars. The sanding belts don't track, be prepared to buy lots of belts, it eats them. The dust collection doesnt work at all.I bought this at a home center and actually returned the first one and exchanged it for another Dewalt, giving them the benefit of the doubt.Same results "JUNK". Save your money or buy a Porter Cable or Makita.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay belt sander
I've owned this tool for over a year.I am a sculptor who uses this sander for various contour sanding, and some furniture work.Recently, I got the chord stuck in the rear roller, so I took the opportunity to take the whole sander apart and study its guts. What I like about the sander:1. nice, flat platten 2. variable speed 3. cord on top 4. good motor. Now, what I don't like about it: 1. dust collector is joke; I get about 15% to 20% efficiency--junk! 2. if the belt tracks off to the motor side, it is eaten up--way too sensitive. Some review states that 3-roller system is an innovative design--no--it's actually an old design--look at B & D Belt sander from 70's.This was a gift; but if I had to buy one now, I would go with Makita.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
Well what can I say? I like most of the Dewalt line of tools, but if they made the rest of their tools like this one, they would go out of business quick! The tracking was eratic, vacuum dust control doesn't work at all-(unless you hook a shop vac).
And for the real clincher---the back drive wheel shaft started wobbling and vibrating after about three hours of total run time.
I checked for a loose bearing or bolt but the wheel wouldn't move by hand, no play at all, which shows that the run-out was caused by the axle shaft bending-most probably due to poor metal quality. Took it back and got a porter cable 352vs--which so far has performed great after many hours of use. ... Read more

For one of the lightest models on the market, The DeWalt clipped head framing nailer sure packs some power. At just 7-1/2 pounds (thanks to its magnesium housing and magazine), the 51822 still delivers up to 900 inch/pounds of driving power. Its conservative 12-3/4-inch height lets you toe-nail where space is at a premium. DeWalt’s unique design buries nails even in engineered lumber with minimal recoil, putting less stress on your body. Ergonomics get another boost from the comfortable, curved trigger and shock-absorbing grip. Resetting your depth of drive is blessedly tool-free, fast and easy, and we also like the quick-release jam-clearing feature for its savings of time and frustration. Safety is a priority, with a dry-fire lockout that keeps the tool from firing when the magazine is empty, a trigger lock-off to disable the tool when not in use, and a steel exhaust deflector that protects the tool if it’s dropped. DeWalt even tucked a pair of safety glasses in the box. A reversible rafter hook will let you hang the tool from a rafter or keep it handy on your toolbelt.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Although it seems lighter than any other framer I've used for some reason I can't get the gun to shoot the naile all the way through the wood. There always seems to be a 1/4" to an 1" of the nail hanging out.I'm a big DeWalt Fan, any tool I can buy from them I do.I wish I went with the standard Bostich or even and enemy... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not all it claims
This gun claims to have low recoil-totally false! My husband bought this gun for me because of the low weight and recoil advertisement, and well after using it for 2 days I could not bend my wrist or grab anything. This gun needs so much force to use the trigger and the recoil is so severe it is unusable. My husband also used it for a day and agreed, and after being in construction for 8 yrs he could not stand it. Editorial Review

This fixed-base router from DeWalt has all the design features to make it a popular choice with woodworkers and professional carpenters. The tool's powerhouse is a smooth-running, 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower variable-speed motor with soft start and a spindle lock. It offers more than enough power to make precise, clean cuts in tough hardwood materials without bogging down. A micro-fine adjustment ring is used to dial in the height setting at 1/64-inch increments, so the motor itself doesn't need to be turned, and as a consequence, the position of the switch and cord doesn't change every time your cut-depth does. This same motor can be used with DeWalt's DW6182 plunge base or their DW6183 D-handle base, and DeWalt has thoughtfully made motor removal and base changing a quick and easy, tool-free operation. As finishing touches, the toggle switch is sealed against dust penetration, and the cord is fully detachable for use with other DeWalt bases and to protect it in storage. DeWalt's engineers and designers clearly spent a lot of time making sure this router package addressed every need a woodworker could have, and the result is a tool that stands with the best in its price range. --Brian Trinen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good router.
I debated between this router and the comparable Bosch model for a while before finally choosing the DeWalt.Three things sold me on this router: the depth adjustment ring, the easy motor removal, and the power.

After using it in my router table I can say that all three of those features are absolutely top notch.I really like the depth adjustment ring - this makes changing bit height in my router table VERY easy and precise (no more spinning the motor housing). The easy motor removal is a plus too - all you do is release the motor lock (one handed I might add) and then squeeze the quick release tabs on each side of the motor housing to cause the motor to slide right out of the base.Thats it - it could not be simpler.

As for power, I have not tried to spin any huge bits in this thing, but I have used some serious ogee bits in white oak, poplar, and pine.In every case, the motor handled the cuts in one pass without bogging down at all and the cuts were super smooth and burn free (I use Freud bits). In my experience, the electronic variable speed works very well.

The only drawback of this tool (and the reason I am not rating it 5 stars) is that I find the bit changing to be cumbersome.I have an older Ryobi router with a fantastic spindle lock that allows you to "lock" the spindle and then use both hands for the bit change. On this DeWalt, there is a spindle lock, but it consists of a spring loaded button that must be held in WHILE you are turning the wrench with the other hand.I feel this could have been designed better.

Overall, this is a great tool at a fair price. If I could do it all over again I would buy this same router.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice router
I have to admit I REALLY like this router. It has that high-quality-durable-well made feel that we all look for and appreciate in a tool. There is nothing "cheap" about the DW618.I've had an old Craftsman router literally since I was a kid and it got the job done but I needed a more powerful machine with a 1/2" chuck for various tasks I'm faced with while building our new house. This included having to flush-trim 32 feet of 1-1/8" T&G plywood. It was hard work (of course) even for the 12-amp motor of the DW618 and I blew the power line's 20-amp circuit breaker at least once.Nevertheless, it got the job done, something that would have been impossible for my other router. The soft start feature is fantastic. The ergonomics are great. The overall quality is first rate. And the price is reasonable. However, it IS NOT perfect.Number one irritation was the center hole in the plastic base was too small to use a 1/2" round over bit!!!I'm still blown away by this idiotic nonsense.DeWalt sells a base with a bigger hole, but why should I have to spend money for something that obviously should have been included?I ended up having to make my own base out of Bakelite because I could not afford to wait for a new base to come in the mail.Naturally, it wasn't hard to make, but it was very irritating.Another thing I don't like about this router is there is a significant amount of free-play in the height adjustment system. This is really a shame on such an otherwise high quality tool. Therefore, rather than for very precise work like cabinet making, I think this router is best used in the construction trades.Lastly, I don't like the push-button collet lock.I would prefer that it used the two-wrench system. This is a powerful router that uses big, nasty cutting tools.I DO NOT want one coming loose. If I had it to do over again, I'd consider the Bosch 1617EVS-46 as it seems to address all of my complaints. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with my DeWalt.I can't imagine a more rugged router.

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW618 a great all around router at a good price
It doesn't matter if this one is your first or tenth router. You're going to be in for a treat. Smooth, quiet, powerful and accurate. This one does what you bought it to do. Not a bunch of bells and whistles just a complete well-made working tool that won't bust your budget.** The only negative preventing a full five star review is the switch location but you will adapt to it quickly. DeWalt's 3-by-21-inch belt sander is a popular choice with do-it-yourselfers and many professionals, as well. It has a 5.2 amp motor with electronic speed control that keeps the belt speed constant under load. The variable-speed dial is easy to use and recessed well enough to prevent unintended adjustments while working; however, it's located near the rear of the handle, making on-the-fly changes a little tricky. DeWalt mounted the dust bag on the front of the sander, and while this allows the tool to be used in tight spaces, we found that the arrangement forced us to work directly above the sander in order to maintain good visibility. As the tool heats and cools, expanding and contracting, the self-tensioning system adjusts the belt to prevent slippage. We found it to track well from one operation to the next, requiring little adjustment. This is a great sander for do-it-yourselfers and most professionals, but it's not quite as burly as the biggest 3-by-21-inch belt sanders on the market. People who intend to use a belt sander for the most strenuous tasks should consider a model with a bigger motor. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much
I am an occasional user.I've used my sander for approx 10 times. The motor burned up today.I was sanding 3 sheets of plywood with 60 grit paper, when all of a sudden it siezed up.Of couse I've had it longer than the warranty, but it should last under the conditions I use it.Will consider before buying Dewalt again. Also, the dust bag is a joke.It collects maybe 20% of your dust.

1-0 out of 5 stars belt sander
The dust colecter does not work at all. Will not pick any dust. I will not use it again. Own other DeWalt tools that are good, but this one is JUNK.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dust Bag Issue
I purchased this belt sander about 5 months ago and found that it lives up to the product claims and design with one basic flaw, the dust bag. As you can imagine, a belt sander removes material aggressively and wood dust is the obviously byproduct.

It didnt take me long to realize that none of the dust was being directed into the bag and perhaps this is due to a design flaw if in fact the designers gave this feature any thought. On the good side, you never have to empty the dust bag because it has no function since all dust is left on the work piece or shot into the air for potential breathing.

If dust collection is a concern of yours, perhaps a different model or manufacturer would better suit your need. ... Read more

Editorial Review

After DeWalt purchased Momentum Laser, it was inevitable they would release their own rotary laser tools. However, this is not just an old tool dressed up in anew yellow housing. Instead, DeWalt has designed from the ground up a completely new rotary laser level.

Probably the coolest thing about this tool is that any existing DeWalt cordless tool battery, from 9.6 to 18 volts, can power it. It runs for 16 hours on an 18-volt battery and 8 hours on the 9.6-volt battery. Built with the rigors of a professional job site in mind, this laser comes with a side-impact, rubber-mounted roll cage. The level is designed for horizontal or vertical application, and the pivoting head makes it easy to switch between the two. While we would like to see a self-leveling system, it doesn't take long to level this tool manually, and the bump sensor tells you if the tool has been jarred and may need releveling. The level uses a patented dual side-by-side laser diode system, which eliminates blind spots caused by obstacles and makes the line more visible. The level is accurate to 1/4 inch at 100 feet, 1/8 inch at 50 feet, and 1/16 at 25 feet.

As with all laser levels currently available, if the diodes become misaligned, recalibration must be done at a service center. And, while other companies offer only one or two service centers, DeWalt plans on having six service centers across the country in order to provide users with fast maintenance turnaround. Professionals looking to take advantage of the accuracy and timesavings of a rotary laser level will appreciate the durability and versatility of this model. Anyone already using DeWalt's line of cordless tools is likely to find this laser to be the ideal choice based on the battery compatibility alone. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this unit
I am an advanced amateur carpenter/builder living on a small horse ranch in Southern California.I bought my DW073KD at Lowe's on an impulse and am in love with the darn thing.I do recognize the notion that self-leveling units are easier to operate. But I have been working with bubble levels all my life and feel very comfortable doing the manual setup.I am doing a remodel in my guest house and have used the unit for everything from laying out recessed lighting to plumbing out a new door in a new wall. The battery power works great and it mates up well with my 12-volt Dewalt drill and trim saw.Went to Lowes last night to buy the tripod and grade rod, then surveyed my property in the dark.Awesome.
P.S.If you are an automation freak, by all means get the latest automatic unit. But if you have craftsman genes, this is a great device.

4-0 out of 5 stars DW073K laser level
RTC Construction, Inc. bought this tool for the purpose of finding level while hanging dropped ceilings, footer digs, leveling for kitchen installs, and establishing other benchmarks.
We found that DeWalt is on the cutting edge with this tool.We were pleased at how it worked in general. It was easy to use and I would not hesitate to recommend this tool. The dual diode was very bright and that was a nice treat.
The only thing I believe that needs to be improved is the bump warning system. It is very sensitive to any movement, and I wonder how the laser will react to a windy day outside. Often we found that the level was still level even while the bump warning light was blinking due to minor movement of a wall or the floor.
One other thing that needs improvement is the green vile to find level. The viles were hard to see in low light. Mounting to the ceiling, we had to use a flashlight to read the vile.Part of the problem was due to low lighting, but the other part was due to the green vile.
I was happy not to have to buy alot of accessories with this tool. It had all the essential accessories to get the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving into the 21st Century--Finally!
I am not a professional home builder, so when posed with a few chores that would be a lot easier with this type of tool, I was unsure if the cost would be justified. However, I grabbed the checkbook and bit-the-bullet after researching the pros and cons, and playing with one for a while in our local tool store. After recently installing a suspended ceiling, and looking forward to installing vinyl siding and a shower room install, I feel that the cost was totally justified.Even though I am a do-it-yourselfer, my time is valuable to me, and this rotary laser saved me enough time and headaches that it is almost justified already. After the siding is done, I will probably pat myself on the back for the purchase and send DeWalt a thank-you note. The only downside is that this model, while versatile and accurate, is not a self-leveling device--that would have been nice, but with the DeWalt self-leveling laser at more than double the price, it is simply something for the professionals.Leveling it is easy enough, but does take some time to get it perfect.I like the fact that the mounting plate is integrated into the unit--seems like a good design, but time will tell on that one. ...
