126. DEWALT DW746B 10" Woodworker's Table Saw
by DeWalt
Tools & Hardware
list price: $1,100.00
Asin: B000077CP7

Editorial Review

DeWalt's DW746 Woodworker's table saw features an inboard 1-3/4-horsepower induction motor that is quiet, powerful, and significantly cuts down on vibration. The inboard motor also makes this saw considerably more space-efficient than outboard-motor saws, something you'll appreciate if you work in a small shop or have to take your saw through doorways. In fact, this saw is loaded with great, user-friendly features. There's an oversize, left-side on/off switch that lets you bump the saw off with your knee if you run into trouble while making a cut. It's exactly this sort of attention to detail that wins a lot of people over to DeWalt products. The blade-elevation crank is also set lower on this saw than most, so there's plenty of hand clearance for making blade-height adjustments. Again, this might seem like a minor touch, but think about how frustrating it is to bang your knuckles on a table bottom every time you want to change the blade height. This table's sturdy metal bevel scale is nice, too; it's easy to read and much burlier than the mere stickers found on a lot of other saws. And at 254 pounds, this saw has plenty of heft, a big cast-iron trunnion, and a sturdy steel base. There's also an integrated dust port if you want to hook the saw up to a dust collector. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The norm for DeWalt Tools
I had a Porter Cable 4 Gal., 2H.P. Pancake compressor and just wasn't satisfied with the performance, especially since I was accustomed to the Quality and professional performance from DeWalt. The PC just wouldn't keep up with my work in my shop. I took it back and purchased the D55151 DeWalt and, of course, am satisfied again. Truly, DeWalt lives up to the advertisement, "Guaranteed Tough"! One can not go wrong purchasing this Compressor for shop or light commercial work. You may pay a little more but the quality built into every DeWalt tool I have makes it worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars a home craftsman
I do various home repairs on my own home and on my rental properties.I needed a good quality air compressor for my nail guns and I purchased the Dewalt D55151.A framer friend of mine recommended the oil fil type as apposed to the oil-free version.I have had the compressor for about 2 months and so far it has performed better than I ever expected! It's great! The only drawback is that it does not come with a female hose connector, so I purchased and installed a manifold to accept 2 female connectors. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars poor top covering
While the fit with the rest of the saw (I have all the other options as well) is good, for the life of me, I can't figure out what DeWalt was thinking when they put the top covering on this table extension. The basic idea of an outfeed table is to support longer materials so they slide through the blade more easily and with less binding. The very first piece of rough wood I ran through the saw tore through the flimsy covering, rendering it useless.I wound up covering the top with high density plastic to get a nonbinding surface. Now the rest of the covering is detaching from the table, so I will have to replace the surface again. My recommendation: if you buy this, plan on immediately resolving the issue with the top or you will regret it later.

1-0 out of 5 stars 4 years of use
I have owned a Dewalt table saw with this extension for 4 years. The fibre board surface curved and sagged even with the steel stiffener underneath resulting in the workpiece only being supported partially. The leg is flimsy and can move in and out making the top surface move up and down. Not a design for the long run.

1-0 out of 5 stars Table has no hinges
Any basic table saw that has an outfeed table should havehinges to fold down for storage. This table has none. Spend you money on building your own. ... Read more

This is a BOSS compressor. The 8 hp Honda engine fills the 17 gallon tank in a few minutes. Then it goes to a low idle. Both compressor and engine come ready to go. Just add gas and pull the cord. The unit is packaged so all you have to do is remove three bolts from the shipping pallet. No assembly! I've ordered a sandblaster to use with it. I can't wait! Rust, look out! 1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this ripoff - Buy an LED flashlight instead
Many of you must have noticed that various manufacturers of power tools are "giving away" flashlights with cordless drills, etc.Well, this is how they make money, by charging $4-5 for ONE flashlight bulb! What a ripoff. In my experience, these light bulbs are cheaply manufactured and blows out in matter of weeks, not years.

I recommend that you search for "4-LED Flashlight" on Amazon.com and, for a bit more money, buy one of these LED models for which you NEVER have to replace the bulbs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PowerPowerPower
I had several saws before , but this time I decided to spend the bucks and buy a good one that would be worth fixing if the bearing went out.
Well this is everything I thought it would be and more, The only draw back is that this baby has some weight to it, My wife helps out alot and she complained the firest time she picked it up so if your not a strong arm person , this is not the saw for you.
keep in mind the 8 1/4 blades are not cheap when they can be found , but you can use the 7 1/4 if the size is not in demand.

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt 8-1/4 Power Saw
Simply put, this saw has a lot of power and is great for framing and ripping 2x4's. I used this saw to rip 3x10's and it handled the job with ease.I would have to recommend this saw over the 7-1/4 types. If you only can afford one saw, this is the one to buy.7-1/4 inch type saws are lighter and easier to handle all day long, but they won't cut like this one.I own both types of saws and I usually go for the 8-1/4. They really should make a case for this thing.Mine didn't come with a case.I have to pull the blade guard back in order to store it in the 7-1/4 saw case. The 7-1/4 saw now sleeps on the floor.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceeding my expectations
I am actively involved in timber framing for myself, and have been looking for the right mid-sized circular saw for a while. I came dangerously close to ordering the Milwaukee 10-1/4" until I read a very helpful review on this site about the paper thin foot that easily bent. I already own a 16-5/16" Makita, and it is a beast, with a maximum 6-1/2" depth of cut at 90 degrees. I needed a saw that could cut 3" deep---this saw is advertized at 2-15/16", and it does every drop of that! The foot is extruded aluminum, about 1/8" thick, very stout. This saw feels no different than a normal 7-1/4" to me. The depth adjustment knob is fantastic, and the angle adjustment is a breeze. Be sure and check it when you first get your saw though. Mine was off almost two degrees. This saw will rip 3" thick SYP with the blade that comes with the saw! It is as strong as you would ever need it to be!... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a true screw gun
A relative came over to help me install drywall in my basement and brought his Dewalt screw gun. After seeing him run through a box of screws I realized it was pointless for me to try to keep up with my drill and bit attachment. It was more efficient for me to measure and cut pieces and let him take care of the fasteners.I was fascinated at how he would keep the screw gun running with one hand and bring up screws from his apron with the other.Once he got going, his rate was one screw every one-two seconds.Jeff had to leave after a couple of hours but left the Dewalt for me.It was then that I learned the features that allowed for this lightning fast drywall installation.

When the trigger is depressed, the motor runs, but the tip does not turn until it is also pressed against the work surface. The motor runs at much higher RPM's than my drill resulting in the 1-5/8" screws disappearing into the drywall in a blink. The depth adjustment disengages the clutch at your predetermined setting resulting in perfectly placed screws every time. The drywall paper was perfectly dimpled, without breaking, at every screw.I also found that longer 3" screws installed through joists just as quickly and easily.

It turns out Jeff let me keep his "old" Dewalt because he had a few that he uses for work.I can't wait to use it on my upcoming deck project.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than a drill with a bit attachment.
With the built in clutch mechanism, there is no chance of stripping or twisting off the head off a screw.Simply set the depth adjustment, drive the screw, and wait for the clutch to engage. The screw will always be the perfect depth, every time.I was building a deck with someone else using a drill and was able to drive a good 25% more screws in the same amount of time since I didn't have to worry about depth and torque.Be sure and pick this one as it's the only one that comes with a case. You just can't go wrong with a good case -- you'll never loose the other head attachments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for anything you want to drive
I had a chance to use this screwdriver this past weekend and found to have plenty of power to put drywall up and to put in deck screws through redwood decking it worked great. the set and forget nosepiece was handy. i can't say enough about this dewalt we own many dewalt and other brand tools and this dewalt does not let us down. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps it's yellow because it's a lemon
I would have given this product 4 or 5 stars until I read a certain review on this site. I was very happy with the performance of my DW904 12-Volt until it went dead on me a week ago. Just as this reviewer I speak of said, "Oh I'll just replace the bulb", but that didn't do it. Thinking that maybe the switch went bad I took the light apart and bypassed the switch but still no light. I promptly threw it in the trash in disgust because I really hadn't used it that much and I NEVER abused it. Even so I planned on buying another DW904 thinking that mine must have had a defect, but now after reading that another person has had the same problem with his, forget it. I'll probably order a Milwaukee flashlight for I had recently purchased their cordless 14.4 to replace the noisy 12 volt Dewalt I have. (The one that the flashlight came with)

3-0 out of 5 stars Fits Black & Decker Also
This is a cleverly designed and well built product which will make a valuable addition to your tool box, PROVIDED you already have a couple DeWalt or B&D 12v batteries (they are interchangeable). It would not make sense to buy a separate battery for it, as they cost about 2x as much as the light itself. These lights are also made for other voltages, including 9.6 and 14.4 v.

I compared this light to a 2-D cell Magnalite which weighs about the same (1.5 lbs w/battery.) As one would expect given the difference in voltage (12v vs. 3v), the DeWalt appeared to be several times as bright as the Magnalite and has a beam 3-4x as wide.

I only gave the light three stars because (1)It is overpriced, even w/ Amazon's discount (2) Replacement bulbs are also expensive, although they do include a spare, and (3) You cannot focus the beam - a wider "flood" beam would be preferable to the more intense spot for many applications.

If all you want is a general-purpose lantern, there are several 6v dry cell units available which represent better value. However, this one will utilize your existing batteries & charger, and with its solid base and tilting capability can be configured to illuminate the typical work site better than most of its competitors.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRIGHT AS HECK! AWESOME!
If you are sick of constantly buying batteries, and never having a flashlight handy, buy this gem. It's awesome, especially if you already have sunk a few hundred into other dewalt products and wish you could use those batteries for something else! It's bright and takes a beating! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A remarkably compact tool, DeWalt's 3/8-inch, 3.2 amp right-angle drill is designed for electricians, plumbers, remodelers, and anyone else who works in tight places. The drill offers good speed (1,200 rpm) and weighs 3-3/4 pounds. The tool's most distinguishing feature is its paddle-type trigger, which runs nearly the length of the tool's body, allowing the user to engage the drill using all manner of inventive hand configurations. The molded neck makes the drill comfortable to grasp by the head, as well. The paddle trigger, however, does make it possible to engage the drill unintentionally while you're maneuvering or when you set the tool down. In order to make this drill so compact, DeWalt had to make a few design compromises. The tool has a keyed chuck; a keyless chuck, when you think about it, makes the drill's nose significantly longer. The drill also doesn't reverse, and depending on the materials you'll be drilling through, this is something to consider before you buy. But for anyone looking for an extremely compact drill that's built to last, this DeWalt is a smart buy. A key and a rubber key holder complete the package. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works just fine!
I didn't pay close enough attention when I ordered this drill. I failed to notice that it was not variable speed or reversible. All I saw was that it was the cheapest one. OK, so make sure it does what you want. If it does what you want, it works fine! I really have no complaints about the drill as it is. It has plenty of torque. The keyed chuck is very good quality. The paddle switch works fine, and is made out of metal (I think it's cast aluminum.) The switch is long and it pivots sideways - the hinge is parallel to the body/motor. I can get a good working grip at several places along the body, or with the drill twisted around in my hand at a wide range of angles. I can't blame the drill for my mistake, and besides, it has served me well in a couple tight places inside walls and and between some hard to reach ceiling joists. It is pretty compact, which is definitely a benefit. If I had it to do again, I would buy the 12volt DeWalt right angle VSR drill that uses the same batteries as my regular DeWalt cordless drill. But now that I have this one, I'm all set! Oh, one more thing; notice that it does not come with any kind of case. It just comes in a DeWalt yellow box. That's not a big deal, unless you are expecting a case.

4-0 out of 5 stars What no variable speed and reversing?
I did a lot of looking around at medium right angle drills. The drawbacks on the Dewalt is no variable speed, and no reversing. So it may be prone to stripping screws, and now way to reverse them out when they do. Ouch. For straight drill of holes it is great.
If you have air around, and don't need to make large holes in 2x12s, the air driver Porter Cable is sweet. Has air pressure, to create torque and variable speed adjustments, and has reversing capabilities, and is the best price on the block.
My pick is the Makita 110 volt model. It has the largest amperage motor in the medium duty range, has variable speed, reversing, and an adjustable speed limiting dial, an LED light to illuminate your work, and is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the tool.
Next is the Bosch with a slightly weaker motor at 3.8 amps, and doesn't have the speed range of the Makita, even though it is at the same price. Nice overall tool though.
Then comes the Milwaukee 55 degree angle drill. Fine for additional leverage while drilling, but could be a problem for deeper access areas when making 90-degree applications. Especially important in crammed quarters, when you would have to swing the body out the additional 35 degrees to get a 90-degree angle.
Black and Decker makes a lightweight unit, and will suffice for the occasional weekend warrior.
The Dewalt unit, fills a niche, but is a very good example of getting what you pay for. If it were not for the no reversing, and no variable speed capabilities, and for making the paddle switch so long, that gets in the way, even when you don't want it to, makes the unit, strictly for those who are price conscious first, and tool conscious later.
Wake up and smell the Makita. :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Full time construction worker
I own this particular drill, although it is a powerful drill for a compact right angle drill, the major draw back for me is the non-reversing feature. What I have needed to use it for mostly is driving in screws in compact areas such as the inside of cabinets. If there is a need to remove the screw for adjustment of what you are working with you are really up a creek. Other than that it is also not variable speed which is not critical but would definitely be a plus if it were variable speed. I would recommend the makita model although not as powerful it has all the things the dewalt model lacks.P.S. A friend of mine has this drill and while trying to change the bit with the drill plugged in accidentally hit the trigger driving the chuck key deep into his hand.VERY PAINFUL! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Compared to this sleek number, the first belt sander we ever used (a long, long time ago) was like a lawn tractor with sandpaper and a handle. This baby's a world away from that. DeWalt's solved a couple of common belt sander woes with this design, first with a clever three-wheel design that puts the motor right between the rollers, not behind, for superb balance. That's enhanced, too, because the placement ensures the lowest center of gravity. DeWalt has machined the platen for dead-on flatness, and they're the only ones we know of who do this. The variable speed dial is conveniently right on the back of the handle, letting you choose just the right speed for the material. If you've used as many belt sanders as we have, you're scoffing at the idea of a dust-collection system that really works, but leave it to DeWalt to figure this out. The dust-collection unit removes, too, in case you don't want to use it, and a shut-off keeps the waste from spewing at you. Rubber grips reduce vibration, and the front handle can be attached either on top or at the very front of the tool. Bravo.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many glitches
I am a contractor who recently started my own business and have been buying a lot of tools.I used the Porter Cable belt sander before and loved it but figured DeWalt was great brand so I bought this sander. In as few words as possible; I hate it!I mean I really do not like using it and here's why:

Cons
-Belt tracking doesn't work and I am constantly watching it instead of my work to make sure the belt doesn't work its way to one side and shred itself.I have had many belts get shredded and as a result damaged the wood I was sanding.
-Dust collector is poorly attached; bag falls off too easily causing dust to blow everywhere in a matter of seconds.
-Dust collection system gets clogged and I find I have to constantly blow it clean with a compressor.
-Comes in a ridiculously HUGE case. It's great if you bought the stand with it (unlike me) since there's room for it.It's so big I also keep a palm sander, 2 8" quick clamps and a lot of extra belts (you'll need them).

Pros
-The only pro I can think of is that it looks cool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get a real sander like porter cable
Had 3 of these....they where all problems. The first one lasted 2 weeks when the maib drive wheel broke. the next two broke to many belts....I used 3m belts and it didnt matter after 5 min the belt would break.I couldn't afford to keep replacing belts so after the 3rd unit I bought the portercable 352vs.I still have the same belt on it.The Dewalt feels solid and weighs a ton but is the worst tool I have ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first and only sander I will ever need.
I bought this sander at the local store and bought some porter cable sanding belts along with it. I got home and put one of the belts on, without looking at the direction. About 5 minutes later the belt started sreading apart. Not knowing what just happened, i threw another belt on there. This time, looking only at the installing a new belt part of the directions. Make a long story short, I went through about 4 belts doing this before my friend showed be that you had to track the belt. I tracked it with a new belt but the belt would not stay on therollers. Extremely angered, I went to the store and bought some 3M belts, cost about as much as the porter cable ones, and brought them home to try out. I put the first belt on there, and tracked it. This time it stayed on. In fact, that same belt is still on my sander, but I need to replace it. I've used it so much that the paper is becoming smooth.

Moral of the story: Never give up, and never buy porter cable sand balts, they are pieces of ****.

The dust collection works as well as they advertise and I have yet to have a problem with it since the new belts. I recommend this to anyone looking to buy a sander. I haven't tried any other sander, but from the experience I am getting from this one, I'd buy another dewalt if this one ever breaks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a BEAST (from one amateur's point of view)
I finally had to give my brother his saw back today.<>I'm going to miss the big beast.

Okay, I'm no pro -- just a very enthusiastic amateur. On the other hand, since I have no idea what the correct way to use the saw is, I may well put it through a harder, albeit shorter and less frequent, workout than the pros do.

A couple comments:

If you need to pull the blade out of the cut before you've gone all the way through the material, be sure to let go of the trigger first, or this puppy will twist your blade into a fair imitation of a question mark.

As far as changing blades goes, I can't imagine anything easier.Just flip up the little lever, give the saw a tiny shake, and the old blade falls harmlessly to the ground.Shove in a new blade, push the lever back down, and it's off to the races again.I'm not really sure why anyone would *want* to touch the old blade -- gloves or no -- before it cools off, but I agree it would definitely be a hazard.

Sure, it vibrates like a Harley with a bad timing sprocket, but for this amateur that's part of the appeal -- i.e., when I fire that thing up I just KNOW I'm doing some really MANLY stuff!{g}

Great saw.Wish I had one of my very own.

4-0 out of 5 stars raw powah!!
This baby has the goods under the hood! It also has some junk in the trunk, as in: it's quite heavy. Even still, it makes my hands and arms numb with extended use. I have not used this saw for days in and days out as some have(I have to have arm transplants if I did!) so I can't say how it holds up in those type of conditions, but I've demoed a kitchen, cut off car exhausts and turned an ancient picnic bench into kindling, all I can say is...the thing cuts! Just keep the fresh blades coming as the big demo blades I use dull quickly.
Unlike some others, I haven't had any problems with the quick release blade lever, even with gloves. Mine still works as slick as the day I got it.
The variable speed is nice, though more often than not, I have it cranked to the top.
I find the trigger to be difficult to hold down for long cuts due to the vibration. If the trigger guard just below the trigger were shorter I think that would solve the problem.
The one thing that really blows about this tool is the shoe adjustment! It only goes in and out maybe two inches at the most and that's about half as long as would be useful. To top that off, when trying to move it out, the shoe invariably come out of the end of the tool. While I'm sure it's nice to have it be removable, it would be a lot nicer if you had to perform a different operation to take it off.

To sum up: Seemingly burly build quality, tons of power alas with tons of vibration, poor shoe design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not DeWalt's Best Tool
I like DeWalt's stuff, really, but this tool has too many problems with its new features.I don't like how the shoe falls out so easily from the unit; the first time I'm on the peak of a roof and that happens, I'm going to be really upset! The quick release doesn't have a positive feel even when the unit is new.Making sure it's latched when wearing gloves is iffy at best. Finally, and the worst bugaboo, is that the saw doesn't even move when the speed control is at 1 or below. At 1.5 it sorta kinda moves. So a good chunk of that adjustment space is useless.

I think I'll return this one and buy a Sawzall. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Add On
I had absolutly no trouble with reading, understanding and following the instruction when installing the DW7461 Heavy Duty Table Slide to my Dewalt Table Saw.

To me the key was.Don't go to the following step until the prior one is completly understood and inplemented.

Well worth the cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great table, not-so-great mitre gauge
I've found the table to be a great addition to the saw; the mitre gauge less impressive. The table is fairly easy to set up--although the instructions could be improved, if you have a helper for the lifting step the parts are all well-engineered and fit together well.It took me about 5 minutes to level it perfectly--you should set the horizontal distance from the main table before adjusting the set screws. It slides smoothly. And it adds 100lbs or so to the saw, making it even more stable--a big plus.

But I'll be saving my pennies to buy a replacement mitre gauge, as the DeWalt gauge is very sloppily put together.Even locked down at every adjustment, it wobbles, and I have no confidence in any angle set.I'm using the stock mitre gauge for the time being, and that's a workable interim solution.

EDITED 9/7/04:DeWalt shipped me a replacement gauge which locks down beautifully, and will enable great precision.Altogether I now have a very fine package--certainly worth five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even close
I greatly anticipated delivery of the DeWalt sliding table for my table saw.Assembly is not trivial even for an experienced and mechanicaly inclined person such as myself. Then the disappointments started.I had a difficult time adjusting the table to level since moving one leveling screw upset some other corner. When I had the table level, I adjusted the gap between the sliding table and the saw. With the gap straight, I found that the table was no longer level.Around and around this sequence went. When I finally had the gap straight and the table level, I tightened the mounts and slid the table. That was when I noticed that the table doesn't stay level through its travel. This was the final straw of frustration, so back the table goes to get my money back. For this kind of money, I would expect better performance from DeWalt products.I still love my table saw, but the sliding table is junk since it won't hold stable through the travel. ...
