Nice, but............
I bought the Hitachi mainly based upon price because I don't intend to use this drill on a daily basis. There are some times that only a right-angle drill will do. It is well built and a solid performer but the slide swith is a real bummer! Mostly you will NOT want the drill to run continuously. I whittled away the small catch on the slide (good-bye warranty) and find a much better drilling experience. I now control when the drill runs. But for the switch I would have given it 5 stars.

Hitachi excellence and attention to detail!
First of all, I want to clarify something in another review of this product. The type of switch on this product is for tight space! It is impossible to maintain a firm grip (control) on a power tool and operate a paddle switch at the same time. I have used tools in both construction and automotive all of my working life. For example: the old Snap on air ratchets had a index finger (trigger finger) switch. The other inexpensive tools have a paddle switch that all of us in the business call, knuckle busters! I own both types. With a paddle switch type, if the tool is under load or starts to get away from you, of course you can't just let go of the tool to shut it off! If you hang on, as we all do, your hand and tool can become sandwiched between other material such as 2X4's with nails or screws or sharp metal. I had it happen with a high torque air ratchet, where the tool was under load and pulled my hand into metal radiator, shroud and fan blade, tearing the flesh from my knuckles and the back of my hand. While screaming in pain, I had to contort my body and use my left hand to disconnect the air line from the tool to shut it off, after the damage was already done! This is probably not going to happen in construction but you get my point Why do most high speed grinders and cutters not have these paddle switch's???? Hitachi engineers were really on the ball with this tool design! Once again "one up on the competition"! The best in it's class! I bought this tool for the following reasons: the type of on off switch, speed control dial, reverse and forward, and of course Hitachi's excellent quality and ergonomics. I am delighted with all of my Hitachi tool's, great tool's!

Difficult to operate
The switch on this drill is difficult to operate. Myself and two other guys had problems with it. The drill is either locked on or off. If the bit jambs you can not quickly stop the drill or for any matter it is difficult to stop. This is a problem and will probably burn up the motor when it is jambed and attempts to turn. I guess if Hitachi makes a better switch or even a simple trigger it would be a great drill. I am returning mine tomorrow. ... Read more

Excellent, powerful drill
I just got this drill and used it to secure some oak planking on a bridge we are building.The drill had plenty of power to sink 4" lag screws through the 2" thick oak planks (after drilling pilot holes, of course) and into the underlying structure.An older Craftsman drill that another guy had couldn't even get the screws started into the hard oak planks.

The removable side handle is a must in situations where you need a lot of torque.I let someone else try to use this drill and the first time it spun itself right out of their hands.The grip is very comfortable with just a little bit of rubber to help prevent slipping and I really like the two finger trigger.As another reviewer mentioned, the brake works well and the drill stops quickly.Overall an excellent drill, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Contractor Grade Drill
This is an extremely well built and durable drill, suitable for contractor use. The electric brake on this model is one of the best I have ever used. The overall fit and finish is excellent, and the balance is perfect. The drill comes with a hardshell carrying case that keeps everything together. The ambdextrous screw-on handle is very comfortable.

Very happy with this purchase!
My wife bought me this drill for my birthday and I've been very impressed with it.I've used it to drill large diameter holes and have also used it as a screw gun, it works extremely well in both areas.Everything on the drill seems well made, no small parts to break off.I especially like the 2 fingered trigger and egronomic grip for applying pressure to the bit.

Good Drill + Bad Marketing = Confusion Reigns!
Although I love my DeWalt cordless drill, sometimes you just want the power and stamina of a corded drill.I looked at the DeWalt and Milwaukee corded drills, but they cost a bit more than I was able to justify spending.So I ended up with this Hitachi, and I am very pleased with it.This tool comes right out of the box looking and feeling like a quality machine.The fit and finish on all of the parts is excellent.Every component, from the cord to the chuck, feels like it is very high quality/professional grade.I still marvel that this drill was as inexpensive as it was.As soon as I got it out of the box I chucked a 1 1/4" spade bit in it and bored some holes in a treated landscaping timber.It went through like butter with very little vibration and the motor never bogged down a bit!

Now here is the confusing part for all of you careful shoppers.I bought the Hitachi D10VF from Lowes for exactly half of the price it is listed for here.I find this amazing since I generally direct people to Amazon for their low prices.Oh and Lowes did not sell me a 'cheap 6 amp look alike' as another reviewer claims can happen.There is a 6 amp model there, but it is NOT the D10VF (which is every bit of 9 amps).

More confusion stems from the fact that the Hitachi D10VF is a single speed drill with a no-load speed of 0-3000 rpms and a one year warranty (this is right from my owners manual).This EXACT drill is listed on Amazon as having variable speed, a no load max speed of 1200 rpms, and a 5 year warranty (click on the 'see more technical details' link on the product page).The best I can figure is that Amazon confused the technical data with the Hitachi D10VG, a different model altogether.I have no idea where they got the five year warranty thing.I cannot imagine what is going on with Amazon incorrectly marketing this drill!If you follow the 'view the product manual' link on the product page it will show you the real info for this drill.

Despite all of the misleading specs and marketing confusion, this is a great drill that can be had at a much better price elsewhere.I would buy this one again in a heartbeat.

Powerful drill, a bit heavy
I found this drill on sale at Loew's for the same price listed on Amazon.com for the D10VH, which was the drill that I was originally looking for.Unlike the D10VH, it comes standard with a keyed chuck, which was a plus for me.

This drill is quite a bit more than I really needed.It's got tremendous torque - you can drill through or screw just about anything down without any problem.It is nose heavy and unless you are a lot stronger than I am, expect to use this drill with two hands always.There is a hole for an attachable handle on this drill.

The speed adjustment for this drill is quite sensitive.At full speed, this drill is not that noisy, an improvement over my old Black and Decker drill.

don't buy at lowe's or home stupid
just a word of adivice if you want a good quality tool don't be the guy that buys a 6 amp look alike tool at the home improvement store, the reason the price is lower is because it's not the same tool. this drill is just one example. pay attention, don't be stupid, and buy the real deal the better tool. ... Hitachi WR14DH
Very nice tool for the money.Fits nicely in your hand and is well balanced.definitly not a cheap tool (in terms of quality).I torqued a 3/4 wheel lug on a car to 150 ft/lb (with a torque wrench) and the hitaci took it off in about 5 seconds of hammering.It also torqued maximum on the wheel lug nut to about 150 ft/lb, which is way over, but lets you know it can do the work.Takes off rusted nuts and bolts well.I work at a rental place and am always taking machines apart with the wr14dh and it last long on one charge which is a good thing.I only wish it came with a second battery.It is fun to use and a great time saver! ... Very nice drill
I was searching Lowe's and found this drill.It is truly a good bargain.It is very powerful and the charger is great.I also got a free flashlight with it.If you are simple do-it yourselfer, this drill should have all the power that you need.

Very good Tool to have around
This tool is very convenient. It spins much slower than a typical drill and has clutch that is surprisingly consistent. Why only four stars ? Because the chassis is assembled in 3 pieces ( most are two ), the nose/ clutch diaphragm, motor housing another, and the pistol grip is the third. The resaon I took away a star is because although you can't see the separate pieces flex, it feels like it, but only when drilling 4" deck srews which torque the housing just enough. If you typically use screws that are 3" or less, you'll never notice it.Kind of a minor quibble but one that takes away from the overall feel of quality. Aside from that, the gun is lightweight, the grip is comfortable, the motor has plenty of guts and sings like a sewing machine. The unit has triple dust protection and the green body is easy to locate on the job. Great tool, I just think they should have molded the grip and motor housing in one piece, not two. Does the job without fault, would have given 4 1/2 5 stars, but that was not an option! ... Read more

Very pleased with this kit
I was so glad I had this drill during the hurricane season in Fall 2004.The first big test beyond small in house projects.We installed and uninstalled steel hurricane shutters twice and thank God we did, the hurricanes came right through my city.Light weight and well balanced in your hand, never needed recharging during the job (over two hours) and torque control.I had to use the flashlight when we lost power and I had two charged battery packs.Very useful in an emergency.

Holding up to heavy use...
When I first saw this set I was impressed with how much there was for the price and the apparent high quality. But I decided to wait a while before writing the review to see how it performed in service. I recently completed most of the work on a 650-sq-ft addition to the house. The Hitachi started by drilling holes in the pad and setting concrete anchor screws through the sill plate and finished by driving hundreds of drywall screws. I even dropped it once onto concrete with no apparent damage. I now have very high confidence that this will be a long-lived tool as well as a good-looking and pleasant to use one. Highly recommended. (The work light is nice too.)

Torque
If you want a drill with tons of torque, this drill is for you. I'm a big guy (fat) & I can really lean on this drill without stopping, or slowing it down much which is uncommon these days. Look at all the others & I don't think you can find one with more torque without spending alot more.
