Worth every cent
This baby is wonderful. I have a trawler with lots of teak and this tool has been invaluable in allowing me to effectively get to hard to reach, tight spots.

BUY THIS
I am frequently disappointed withspecialty tools that are not much more efficient than their old manual counterparts.Not this tool.I am stripping and refinishing every door and window in an 80 year old house.I cannot count the number of coats of paint.I have been using gallons of toxic paint stripper for the difficult to reach parts at $25.00 per gallon.Forget that I am probably poisoning the whole family, this stuff gets expensive.Now, in combination with traditional sanders,
I can stop using the chemicals.

The scraper works really well.With light passes it takes off the paint pretty quickly.With any pressure it gets right down to the wood (use caution or you will go through the wood).The sander works well, and I am looking forward to using the saw attachments.

More often than not, We get what we pay for.This tool is worth the extra few bucks.

Alas, Amazon did not get the purchase, as they could only ship in one to two weeks.I found one elsewhere for the same price, that shipped the day I ordered.

bought this tool back in december 04.if you are doing new door casing but not base, great tool for cutting away the extra base that in the way.sanding out puttied corners, or fine tune a outside base or crown corner..once you use it you will wonder how you got along with out it.I used to carry a japenise cut away hand saw, but this tool is much easier.I use fein would come out with a battery powered one.

Good Vacuum, Bad Waranty
I'm writing this messege with the intent of alerting users to some issues I just experienced with the Fein Model 9-55-13 vacuum.I"m not recommending against buying one, but I do think they should revisit their service policy.

I had my unit for about a year and a half.During that time I was genrealy very pleased with the unit in many respects.It had fantastic dust collection, a resonable foot print, and of course made a lot less noise than anything else.

A few days back it broke.I called Fein and was told that I had to send it into either Pitsburg or Hartford.I told them I was a contractor and needed an immediate replacement.The rep asked me if I wanted to buy a new one!

I sent an email.Below is the response (note he got my name wrong):

I am not really sure how to respond to thie compliant, or even if we should. While I think our repair centers probably shouldn't throw repair estimates at our customers, and wait till they actually see the tool, I also don't believe that Sears, or any other manufacture would consider a "no-charge" replacement on a power tool that has been used for a year and half.

Not Very Powerful and a Pain to Clean
I have had this vac for about three years now.I use it a lot when sanding and it does a nice job collecting dust so I don't have to wear a dust mask and I don't get covered with dust whensanding.My sanding discs last a lot longer when using the vac.
Cleaning the filter is a pain because I have to go outside with a nozzle and hose connected to my compressor.I blow the dust off the filter and it makes a huge cloud of dust outside and I have to hose down the residue on the ground.
The vacuum loses power as the filter becomes clogged.At first it was very quiet but after a while it became louder and louder and now is about as loud as any other shop vac.
The sucking power is not impressive.It has no more sucking power than my household vacuum. What is nice is that when you turn it on it doesn't blow a cloud of dust like other shop vacs.The small diameter hose clogs easy with small scraps.The acessories are extra and not cheap.

FEIN Turbo almost a great product
I bought it for it's relatively low noise level - which it delivers.

It's hard to believe that a premium priced product like this would have some glaring shortcomings such as:

ON-OFF switch is concealed from view and the symmetrical design of the top gives no clue where it is every time you look to turn it on or off. I made a bandaid fix by placing a piece of tape on the top above the switch location - (-at this price?)

The casters must be smallest of any on the market and they are not guarded. Any obstruction on the floor such as an air hose or extension cord will stop them.

There is no built in provision for storing the powercord.

There is completely inadequate provision for storage of the vacuum hose. If at least one or two more wire formed brackets were included it would help a lot.

There is NO provision at all for storing any nozzles or hose extension.

These shortcomings will annoy every time the product is used - NOT GOOD.

This is a case of function being sacrificed at the altar of Industrial Design, yet so unnecessary and so easily avoidable.

The Fein 9-77-25 excells
The original purpose of investing in the Fein was that I had problems with the other vacuums that I owned not doing a good job in filtering the air.The bags and filters did not work.
Forget about that problem with a Fein vac.Then to top it off, it is as quiet as stated.
Problems, yes, the accessories are expensive, but you can utilize your old accesories if you go to the store and get a rubber pipe reducers.

Absolutely Fabulous
I purchased the Fein Turbo III to replace a Porter Cable and to shift from a 15 foot, 1.5 inch hose to a 25 foot, 2.5 inch hose.This allows me to reach every part of my small shop without pulling the vacuum around.I was concerned that the suction power would either stay the same, given the stats, or decrease.

I was very surprised that the suction power increased.

The design is elegantly simple.Instead of numerous possible leakage points (like in the PC), the circular top of the Fein with the motor and controls sits on the bottom and clamps tight with no air loss.The top can be rotated to accomodate a configuration separate from the bottom and the direction of the hose.While the filters are expensive, they are durable and not as fragile as the PC and many others that are either plastic or paper.A Hepa filter is also available.Both are easily installed.

The only down-side is that the Turbo III arrives only with the vacuum and a 10 foot hose.Accessories (read nozzle) are extra.For my part this was not a problem.I purchased a better hose from a third party and at half the cost.Oh!Did I mention it is the quietest vacuum on the market for it's size?

Fein Turbo III: quiet overkill
Well, yes, it's quiet. But its industrial-sized hose is ungainly, unwieldy, and does not wrap neatly for storage. I feel like an outtake of "Anaconda" when trying to use this thing to vacuum out a car interior.

There are no accessories---wand, brush, crevice tool---with this unit, so you have to buy the ones for the Turbo II and use a step-down adaptor. And of course everything is friction-fit, so things come apart just when you are upside down wedged under a Porsche dashboard.

Finally, the standard cloth filter is quickly clogged to the point where the vacuum works like one in the Two Wild And Crazy Guys routine on "Saturday Night Live" in which Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd have to pour the contents of ashtrays into the vacuum hose: "To have such a fine wackyoom back in Bratislava you would have to be a very high member of the Communist Party!" The di$po$able paper bag$ seem to be an improvement. . . but before I switched to them I actually had the experience of turning off the vacuum only to see all the tiny bits of plastic and solder and wire and pop rivets come cascading back out of the hose!

Bottom line: I wish I still had my old Milwaukee shop vac, or even the Sears household cannister that I banished to the garage. On the other hand, with the Fein, maybe I can keep what's left of my hearing. ... Read more

Great for making wide surface cuts but.....
I'm glad I have this blade for use with the Fein Multimaster. The only problem is that when you are doing a job like trying to cut through a 3/4" cedar wall to install an outlet box, it is hard to keep a perfect corner. I am not talking about keeping a perfect line, it is great for that, but when you are trying to cut an exact corner with a wide angled blade, it is hard to determine the edge. Consequently the edge of your cut can go a little wider than hoped for, leaving a tiny slit that can run out of the outside circumference of your edge lines.
For making those kind of cuts the straight blades, without the angled sides makes for a perfect job. Knowing where the edge of the blade is, even while it is sinking into the wood is the key to getting your corners exact. With the 2 1/2 inch E cut blade, the tip is harder to get a bearing on where the vibrating edge is going to leave its mark. I'm not saying that you can't do the job with this blade, but for that type of application, the square rectangular blades make it easy to do a perfect job.
I'm not knocking this 2 1/2 inch blade. As a matter of fact I like using it for covering a wide area. I can angle the face of the blade along a line, and as the back of the edge is sinking deep, the front edge is starting a new edge of the cut. All in all highly recommended. PS: Get a square-rectangular style blade as well.

this is probably the most useful hand power tool in the universe.but i must agree with those who say the replacement blades are ridiculously high in price. but it is still one of the got to have tools. GOT TO HAVE IT!!!

Good for Nasty Work
We bought and used this filter on our wet-dry vac for cleaning up our house. We're in the middle of some serious rehab, restoring our 1904 house to its original charm, grace and majestic beauty. (estimated completiondate is 2097)

In the meantime, this filter does a good job of cleaningup the big ugly messes.

Before, when using our wet-dry vac without thisfilter (we used the traditional filters and even a paper filter) a cloud ofdust would rise up out of the vacuum when you started it up.

With thisfilter in place, there are no large gray clouds looming on the horizon uponstart up.

It says it filters down to 1 micron. The eye of an averagesewing needle is 750 microns across and the period in written text at 10font is about 400 microns. 1 micron is pretty tiny.

But as I understand,installing this filter on a wet-dry vac doesn't make it a HEPA vacuum,simply because there are other places on the vacuum for air leaks tooccur.

However, as a rehabber, it is a TREMENDOUS help to add this filteronto your wet-dry vac. The filter we purchased is not suitable for wetapplications. ... Read more

Well worth it if you're a regular user of the MultiMaster
I use my MultiMaster regularly. It's a workhorse in my stable of power tools. To really appreciate the value of the MultiMaster and these accessories, you only have to run up against an odd-ball or freakish problem in installation or repair once to justify the initial cost of the accessories kit. I'm a handyman -- ergo, not a specialist in one field or another -- and I find myself doing all different types of jobs ad hoc, on-the-fly that I simply could not do as efficiently on-site and with other tools. Granted, a tile installer by trade may use a different or better tool for grout removal but probably at a much greater cost. For her or him, it's probably a worthwhile investment. Ditto for door installers and furniture refinishers. However, the real value for me is that I can accomodate my customers' needs immediately and do a professional job as well. Cut, plunge cut, grind, rasp, sand and scrape just by changing accessories. Plus, it makes the actual job go much easier. If you buy the MultiMaster, you're buying a fantastic tool so try to go a little further and get this kit with it. I don't believe that you'll regret the purchase.

The Quality Tool Super Deal
The Fein Multimaster is an exceptional tool. The concave cutting blade that comes with the multimaster kit, does a nice job, but it dulls rather quickly. It is not made out of the hardened steel of the Feins optional blades. They are pricey, but the quality is there. The thing this kit does for you is give you the most frequently used blades at a substantial savings over their individual prices. The professional kit that superceded this one, was for the same price, and did not include the extra blade. The price you have to pay for just a couple of the pieces, you can buy the whole kit. Buy this if you bought the Fein MultiMaster!
If you intend to switch from one grit to another definitely buy this system.It is worth it, the cost isn't high, and it will save you a ton of time!

ease of use
If you are like me and constantly changing sanding grits, the velcro is fantastic.No need to peel of the old one and have to discard it.This allows me to reuse the sandpaper and saves me money especially when I have very small jobs to do.

Necessary part for the Fein Turbo vacuums
If you're doing woodworking or sanding, you need the HEPA filter (see my review of that part). To install the HEPA filter, you need this part.

It came with no instructions but was not hard to figure out. Just takes a little force to get the screw into the hole in the flange (from the cup side). The flange fits into one end of the HEPA filter, and the screw locks the filter/flange/screw "assembly" in place. ... Read more

So Fein.
The German engineers say this sander, combined with a good
vacuum, takes away up to 98% of the dust of sanding.They
have to worry about Lawyers.I do not.It gets rids of
*all* the dust.

I hooked it up to a Fein vacuum (model 9-55-13) which I got a
year ago for its own sake.I was able to connect the circular
vacuum hose to the rectangular port on the sander because of
a flexible rubber sleeve which was included in the bottom
of the sander box, like an apology.

I didn't even have the right kind of sanding disks.Mine have
six holes.The Fein uses 8-holed paper.So I punched new
holes in it.I cannot imagine that this is ideal.

Yet -- there is no dust.I sanded a large oak double door
on both sides, an operation I have been fearing for months,
and not only was the result dustless, it was done in half the
time I expected.This sander is mighty fast.To me it felt
like both passes (220 grit and 320) were done just about as
fast as I could move the sander over the surface.

It has two speeds: "on" and "off".It does vibrate a noticable
amount, but not at all objectionably.It's loud enough that
I think I should wear hearing protection, but not so loud
that I will actually walk downstairs to *get* my hearing
protection.

There is no more hyperfine dust on the inside of my eyeglasses
after sanding, which means I'm not breathing it in.I like oak
everywhere except in my lungs.

Buy this and the Fein vacuum, preferably with the HEPA filter,
and throw your other sanders away before they make you sick.
Lungs are more expensive than sanders.

This has got to be the best sander/vacuum combination in the
world.(Because Festool doesn't have a HEPA vacuum yet. :-)

This is Amazing!
If you do woodworking, you know that sanding is the most dreadful part of any project.Sanding is usually a dirty, dusty, and unhealthy job.When my last random-orbit sander got worn out, I replaced it with the 6" Fein MSF636-1.I also bought the Fein Turbo II dust collector to go with it.I am so impressed, I just had to sing its praises...

I have been through several random-orbit sanders -- DeWalt, two from Bosch, Makita, Porter+Cable, and others.Always, when I'm done sanding, my hair and face, and all surfaces in the shop, are covered in dust.For days afterwards, I have to vacuum up the dust.The dust flies around, the dust is all over my work clothes, the dust makes its way from my shop into the house.It is dirty and it is unhealthy -- it is very dangerous to breathe fine dust particles.

When I bought this sander, I figured that "dust free" meant less dust.I thought it would just be an improvement over my other sanders.Not so!With this sander, dust free really means dust free.With the Fein sander, attached to the Fein Turbo II dust collector, there is absolutely no dust in the air at all!I have a bright shop light right over my sanding table, and after I am done sanding I cannot see anything floating around in there.Definitely close to 100% dust collection.

The Fein sander is an aggressive machine, and at first you might be surprised at how much material it removes in a short time.There is an adjustment period when switching to this machine from other ROS, but it is a nice thing to adjust to.Also, I should say that this is a heavy machine, definitely heavier than other ROS I've used.But it does a beautiful job.I've used it on grits from 40 up to 400, and it is easy to control and very well balanced.

One definite minus is that Fein includes no instructions.I know that a sander is a pretty simple machine, but there are a couple of items in the box that didn't make sense to me right away, and it's nice to have instructions to make you feel confident you're doing things correctly.

The bottom line is, I no longer dread sanding.I actually look forward to the sanding phase of my wood projects now.

Awsome sander, but...
I just got this sander, and have been able to use it on some red oak.By far this is the best ROS I have ever used - and I have many hours logged with ROS.This sander can be very aggressive, but it is very easy to control, and gives very precise action.I put most of my 220 lbs. on it and it didn't chock for a second.There was almost no vibration, and my hands did not tingle after a few hours of use.Also, I have never seen better dust extraction.PERIOD!

Now to why it did not get 5 stars from me.

1) No case.At this price you think you would get a case.
2) Poor doccumentation.Mine came with two manuals.Both were safety oriented, and not use or operation oriented.
3) The dust collection outlet is propietary.It is an odd shaped rectange, forcing you to use a hard to find Fein adapter, or make one yourself.
4) Cost.

However, because of the preformance of this unit, I mostlyhave been able to overlook these problems.I am thinking of buying their 8" model next. ... Read more

This is the perfect tool for anyone that needs to cut fiberglass.It is indespensable and much more managable than a dremmel or other hand grinder.I use this tool almost daily.The only down side is that this blade is a bit fragile and will break if bent even slightly.

Great Safe Tight Space Cutting Tool
I was told about this tool by a freind when I needed to do some work on the inside of my sailboat.The tool works on the same principle as an orbital sander, only with this cutting blade attached, it will cut justabout anything very safely.I have used this blade to cut fiberglass tabsaway from the hull without danger of cutting throught the hull and withvery little dust. I have also cut the 3/8 plywood that was fiberglassed tothe bulkhead.I just took my time and the adjustable depth stop and didnot cut through any deeper than necessary. I also trimmed the ends ofStainless steel screws off that are through bolted through the cabin top. great tool -- throw away the sandpaper
I had the same problem as a previous reviewer: The hook and loop sandpaper moved around on the sanding pad. Some sheets were better than others. The problem is the sandpaper, not the tool. I used some hook and loop sanding disks and cut them into shapes to fit the Fein. It worked well. Better yet, I ordered a 75' roll of loop-only sticky Velcro tape and used that to make my own sandpaper. Cut the shapes from regular sandpaper (which is essentially free), apply some velcro sticky tape on the edges, and it sticks better than you need it to. It works great! If you buy Velcro in bulk, it's much cheaper than buying the pre-made sandpaper.

Even better: order the "Fein 63806137017 PSA Sanding Pad (2-Pack)", and use PSA sandpaper. It works perfectly, and PSA sandpaper is very cheap. In fact, you can get it in rolls and cut your own. One advantage of hook and loop is that you can change sandpaper without damaging the sandpaper. While I don't like to be wasteful, I don't think throwing away a half-used triangular piece of sandpaper, worth about 10 cents, is a crime. So I think PSA is the way to go for this tool.

Variable speed vs fixed speed: I bought the fixed speed model for several reasons: I didn't want all of those fancy attachments that come with the VS model, because I didn't want to get hooked on them. They are very expensive. I don't even want to know how great they are. Plus, I am mostly interested in detail sanding. I have flush cut saws and scrapers and other hand tools for other applications. Finally, you can make your fixed speed into a variable speed with a light dimmer. I can hold the dimmer in one hand and the Fein in the other and have great control over what I'm doing. The last remaining advantage of the variable speed model is that it has a longer chord. So I use an extension chord.

Like many reviewers, I was skeptical at first. How could this tool be THAT much better than the 25 dollar versions at local stores? It really is. It's well built and REALLY does the job. It's a very aggresive sander that is easy to handle.

So throw out the poor sandpaper that comes with it (unless it was just in my model -- maybe there was switcheroo at some point since leaving the factory) and enjoy!

Great plunge saw, but...
This tool is absolutely fabulous for doing the few things you will need it for, but and this is a BIG but (pun alert!) the replacement blades are VERY expensive--no joke, check the prices. The profile sanding attachment doesn't work worth a darn. Because of the rotary-vibratory motion of tool, the ends of the little piece of sandpaper do all the work and the center does nothing.

Quality construction but functionally useless for sanding
This detail sander is beautifully built - German engineering all the way. It is relatively quiet and vibration-free. It probably works fine for cutting, scraping, and degrouting, using the (extremely expensive) blade attachments, but for sanding? Forget it. The hook-and-loop sandpaper absolutely would not stay in place on the pad. In ten seconds it began to rotate out of position, until the pad edges were exposed, whereupon the hooks began to wear off the pad. Despite following to the letter the manual instructions for attaching the paper (place against rigid flat surface, press down firmly, turn on tool) the paper would not stay in place. Using very light pressure against the workpiece would delay the rotation of the paper for a few additional seconds, but I could never get the paper to stay properly oriented for very long. The problem was worse with the coarser grit sandpaper, and slightly better with the fine grit, but present either way. Possibly the PSA option that is available with the variable-speed model of this tool would work better, but the hook-and-loop type paper is useless. Be sure to try out this tool before you commit yourself to the purchase - I ordered from Amazon based on the good reviews, and I will now have to ship mine back, with the attendant hassles and expense. ... Better deal elsewhere
The HEPA filter works great but is limited to only dry pick-up and using an expensive special paper bag which does make for easy clean up but does limit versatility.

I bought a Cleanair Gortex HEPA filter from Lowes for $29.99 that fits the Red-Coded Craftsman vacuums.This forms a perfect seal and works for wet and dry pick-up.You only need to either plug the hole in the bottom of the filter with a plastic plug you can get at Lowes or any car parts store or use a 3/8" x 2.5" carriage bolt, nylon washer, and wing nut to more securely fasten the filter.Better filter, better price, easier wet/dry vacuuming.

Expensive, but they're your sinuses and lungs...
When you buy a woodworking tool, the manual doesn't warn you, but if you do a bit of research you'll discover that prolonged exposure to finer dust (smaller than 1 micron, or the size of smoke particles) can lead to sinus and lung problems; some serious. Most shop vacuums come with filters that retain dust as small as 5 microns (a piece of copier paper is about 100 microns thick). If you want to protect yourself, you need a HEPA filter, which will retain particles smaller than 1 micron.

This filter is pretty expensive, but without it, why buy the vacuum? For woodworking and sanding, a shop vacuum without a HEPA filter is probably a waste of money.

Commercial dust collectors large enough for larger power tools, that remove particles smaller than 2 microns, are not yet available at home shop prices. So even with a HEPA filter, if you're using a power saw, planer, etc., you should also wear a respirator with HEPA filters and have something to clean your shop's air before it goes into the rest of your house (and before you remove your respirator). The alternative is to shell out more than the cost of the power tool for a suitable industrial grade dust collector, or to build your own (there are instructions and parts on the Internet).
