Top Notch !!
Like previous reviewers, I checked out all the usual benchtop drill presses available at home centers and wasn't impressed... way too much plastic and too many flimsy cast aluminum parts.So, based on all the positive reviews I read here, I ordered the Fisch.What a difference!Well-built, lots of cast iron, and no unnecessary "gee-gaws" or frills.A real pleasure to use this very solid, smooth-running machine.

Surpasses expectations
After many hours of online research on bench top drill presses, and after reading the reviews here on Amazon, I bought the Fisch. Beautiful machine! Heavily constructed, easy assembly. It seemed to NOT suffer from the drawbacks mentioned about most other competitors. I had a question, called the number, and don't faint, talked to a live person who helped me quickly and courteously. While I haven't used it much yet, my hunch is it will be a great performer. Amazon came through once again on price and free deliverty, enabling one to get a better quality product for the same money as other sites offering lesser machine plus freight.

Best 12 inch drill press for the price.
I just recently purchased this drill press to replace my 40 year old 16-inch Continental floor drill press which finally broke.The Fisch drill press has all the features, only slightly smaller than my full size press.

The Fisch drill press is well packed, the instructions are first rate and assembly took me less than half an hour.Overall the unit appears to be built much better than any of the 12-inch Delta units on the market.

It is a heavy unit, and the tilting table seems like a great addition, since it is easy to tilt (my old drill press required loosening two bolts - the Fisch has a simple lever release).

My only complaint is that Amazon advertises that the drill press comes with the custom clamp in the technical data (see below), but mine sure didn't.I'll be trying to work on Amazon on this issue.

Overall its a very good buy for the price.

Good value for the price
The Fisch 17-1/2 drill press is certainly a quality machine for the money. Some nice features such as the tilt bed and easy-to-use levers are handy. Factory people are very friendly if you need assistance--which you probably won't. Having an attached light would be a nice improvement. The machine is made in China but the competitors are too. All-in-all this is a good machine that I'm happy to have in my shop.

Kliss Cabinets
We are a professional cabinet shop specializing in high end work that demands high end tools. I shopped the Jet and Delta along with the Fisch drill press. We chose the Fisch because the table has a nicer tilting mechanism (you don't need to get out a wrench out..that you cant find, tap,tap with a hammer and so on). The Fisch has a lever that works nicely to adjust the fully tilting table smoothly. No light though..(if that is important to you, stick one on yourself) The fit an finish is slightly less quality than Jet and Delta(crooked stickers,minor cosmetic stuff). The up/down table gear mechanism is a little rough but I believe it will "break in" meaning round off the gears and smooth out.Incedently the free hold down clamp is free for a reason...nicely made but is doesn't really have any clamping power.All things considered I am glad I chose the Fisch over the others. great buy for the major hobbiest
I have had the mortise for a while now and have used it for several days now. The machine is bigger than I expected which is nice between the machine and the base is about 250 pounds. I love the ease of adjustment of the fence and depth adjestments. The handle can be adjusted without tools which makes it nice scence you have six inches of travel. Best of the Best
I recently read two magazine articles about the Fisch bench top mortiser.Both articles gave Fisch high marks.I was suprised to see reviews on Amazons website that told a different story.I also noticed that these review were very old.Fisch has a great reputation so I ordered the 3/4 HP mortiser and was not dissapointed.I have tried the Delta and Jet.There is absolutely no comparison. Fisch has a much better machine.The Fisch mortiser is a strong reliable tool that I will be happy with for many years to come.

Not great.
I've had this mortiser for about a year.It doesn't include any chisel/bit sets, so that was a substantial additional outlay.I have three gripes about this tool.

First, the depth stop is difficult to adjust.There is no depth gauge, and using a tape measure is very difficult.That's because there's a plate on the bottom of the motor assembly that contacts the depth stop, but that plate doesn't extend to the edge of the motor assembly and you can't get a tape measure in to where that plate is.You're pretty much reduced to trial and error with a piece of scrap wood.Very frustrating.

Second, the depth stop is made of plastic.It needs to be very tight in order to keep from slipping, but one of the plastic seams that the threads of the "tightener" go into ended up splitting.

Third, the posts aren't mounted very securely to the base.I wound up having to dismount the mortiser from my workbench in order to retighten them.

I have run into some clogging (and subsequent stalling) and burning, but I can't blame the mortiser for those.

It does the job, just not as easily as I'd like, nor is it as well made as I'd expect....

Not worth it
I bought the Fisch because of the micro-adjustable fence, spring return, and two-post design. I was not satisfied with the tool. Deficiencies: 1. The depth stop slips. I can't tell you how many times I accidentally converted 1 1/4" mortises into 1 3/4" through mortises... Major hassle. 2. The "indexable" knob that controls the depth stop stripped almost immediately--had to resort to vise grips. 3. After about 400 mortises, the machine stalled very frequently--even in very soft wood (western red cedar). Yes, the chisel and bit were sharp and adjusted properly. 4. The chuck cover is made of plastic. This may not matter--because of the frequent stalls, you'll need frequent access to the chuck. Just remove the cheap plastic cover, because it'll break pretty quickly... 5. The micro-adjustable fence is more trouble than you'd expect. The spring makes it difficult to adjust, and the screw isn't long enough to give you the full range of motion I needed. 6. Like all the small mortisers, the hold-down is inadequate.
