4-0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat It For The Money
This is an excellent little Jig Saw.Although(when I bought it), it was advertised as being able to use both types of jig saw blades. The regular blades do not hold at all.Would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent saw at a bargain price
This saw is terrific! It is a *huge* improvement over my old B&D jigsaw.Freud has corrected the blade installation issue... blade change is a snap, literally! Just open the catch, insert the blade, close the catch, and push the blade up slightly until it snaps in place.Easy, and it won't come out.
Yes, the vacuum hose contacts the cord near the dust port, but this isn't a big issue. It seals and vacuums the dust quite well.
The saw has plenty of power and doesn't bog down in thick conditions.I look forward to using this saw every chance I get.
It does all I ask and more. Also, for $50 less than the Bosch, it's a bargain.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointed
I purchased my Freud FJ85 based on my previous experience with Freud products, the apparent value and the great review in Fine Woodworking magazine. Unfortunatley the saw is a piece of junk. It did not cut properly due to a faulty guide and the blade would consistently fall out. Now the saw will not even start up. When I contacted the service department via email, I received a response insinuating that I may have been lying to them when I told them that I bought it a year ago. I guess I should have gone with my first instinct and gotten the Bosch. I wouldn't recommend this saw to anyone. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Are expensive router bits worth the cost? Because of the features found in these Freud bits--long-lasting micrograin carbide/titanium tips, tri-metal brazing, and an antikickback design-- our answer is a resounding yes. Each Freud bit is computer-balanced to run vibration- and chatter-free at speeds well in excess of the typical 22,000 rpm of most routers. These bits have a high shear angle that produces less tear-out and chatter marks, leaving a cross-grained cut that requires little or no sanding. Multiaxis grinding helps ensure the proper relief angle on cutting edges regardless of how the bit is oriented. These bits--intended for use in cabinet production at less cost than a shaper head--are designed with a 1/2-inch shank for use on table-mounted portable routers. In our tests, they cut smooth and clean on all composition materials, plywood, and hard and soft woods. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One more thing....
The large review written here, really covered all of the bases. The one more thing worth mentioning, is that Freud sells the larger more popluar 1 1/2" reveal in a set, which has the 3 1/2" bit to make it, plus the stile and rail set. They come in different part numbers starting with 97-So two of them for example are 97-100, and 97-104. Be sure your router base is at least 3 5/8" to accept them.
It does not include the glue up joint bit, or the drawer lock bit. The glue up joint bit is great for mating a number of panels. Avoids the lip of one or more boards sitting a little proud, that is frequently a problem. It is not a problem, if you have a very large sanding station, belt or drum, you can send a complete door through and get all of the surfaces even. For the rest of us, a glue up bit is just what the doctor ordered. What happens is that you run the bit in adjoining pieces. One piece is run face up, then next is run face down. Then the two mate together perfectly, as long as you have the registration set proplerly. When the boards are clamped-compressed together, they line up. The other thing is the drawer lock bit, which gives you the drawer front, by (rabbetting) the back of the drawer front, including and edge lip which is beneficial to ensure a clean close.
Freud bits are superior in the job they do. They leave a clean finish on the work, and saves a lot of time not having to sand out imperfections. All in all this is a very nice set. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Router Bit Set--Here is Some Info toHelp You
This is fine set--strong, well-made, sharp, and packaged in a handsome wood storage box.Well worth the price.Only negative for me is the reveal on the panel raising bit wasn't quite the size I would have liked.

Here are some points that may prove helpful to you.

A.The description doesn't identify the five bits. They are from left to right in the picture 1) a bit for mating edges of boards for glue-ups 2) the panel raising bit, 3) a door lip bit--for making center panel lips that overhand rails and stiles, 4 and 5) a matched pair for cutting rails and stiles. If you are doing raised panels 2), 4) and 5) are the bits that count.

B.The set comes with a helpful how-to booklet. It is first rate. But, alongside the picture of the five bits on page 6 is a caption that misidentifies the five. The order is wrong.Left to right the bits shown are actually panel raiser, rail cutter, stile cutter, glue joint and door lip.

C.The panel raising bit will produce a relief of 3/4" (excluding the 3/8" that recesses into the rail and stile grooves). That's less than the more common 1-1 1/2" reveals on many kitchen cabinet doors. It turned out to be very acceptable for my rather small doors (20"x20"), but it may or may not be what you need or want.

D.You absolutely need to use a router/shaper table. The panel raising bit has a 2 1/2" diameter, so you need no less than a 3" throat opening.

E.The bits all worked fine on my 2 HP variable speed router--using red oak stock. (Variable speed helps a lot and is probably a must.)

F.You will want to make practice cuts on scrap, back up end cuts with waste stock to minimize tear-out, use a safety guard on the router/shaper table--along with safety glasses and use hold-downs to secure work pieces as they pass through the bit.

The raised panel doors were fun to make and they look splendid.Good luck with yours! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality for Freud
I bought my set a few years ago contempalting doing Dovetail joints.I just pulled it out to use with my PorterCable 1501 router. It would not fit my base plate.Fortunately I found my old porter-cable router that has a base fixed in one place excepted the guides. I tried the 3/8" guide and found it to beoff-center or out of round. It would not fit in the router base.Probably had it to long to get it exchanged. I've bought a lot of other Freud products and have been pleased, but this one surprized me.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's Gold in them hills!
This set is great. Costs the same as Porter Cable, is as good as Porter Cable, if not better and you get the GOLD for free!

How can you go wrong?

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Set
Recieved my guide kit in good order. All the pieces and parts were included in the case. I have only used it once on a hope chest I constructed. Everything seems to fit and work ok. Havent had a lot of experience with this type of routing so I don't have a lot to compare to. The machining of the parts seems fine and what little I have done went very well. So far I am very satisfied with Freud products.
UPDATE..Jan. 05...Ruined the 1/4 inch guide, when the stop collar vibrated loose, allowing the guide to move. Also messed up the bit. I have used this guide set a couple of times and haven't had this problem before. I found a new guide and stop collar at my local woodworker store, not very expensive. I have always hand tightend my stop collar but will use a pair of pliers from now on. Shouldn't have to but can't risk this happening again. Very scary and could have been very hazardous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
I'm slowly going through and replacing many of my cutting tools with Freud products.Every Freud saw blade and router bit has held its edge better than other maker's products.Freud tools cost more, but since I get to leave them on the saw longer, it's worth it to me.I wish they made drill bits! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
This is my second rip blade - its hard to find places to sharpen blades around here, and it takes a while, so I needed a back up.

I added the Freud blade stabilizers, and was able to rip inch and 3/4 ash with no blade marks whatsoever (on a delta contractors saw with link belt and zero clearance insert). I could feed it as fast as I was comfortable.

I can't imagine what paying an extra $[money] for a Forrest would gain me (not having to change blades, I guess).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great blade but...
This is an awesome blade as far as cutting performance goes. It is very sharp and cuts very well. The teflon coating really works to alleviate binding and helps it to run cooler. The teeth are nice and beefy for resharpening. The only thing I don't like is that the carbide is either ground too sharp or it's too brittle. I don't really know. What I do know is that I keep finding chips on the teeth when I know for a fact no foriegn material has been passed through. Nails, staples etc. This has happened with several Freud blades in my unisaw. I recommend the Forrest woodworker 2 for ripping. They don't have the teflon coating but they seem to hold up better over the long haul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome ripping blade!
I generally use 3/4 to 1" oak for my projects on a Jet 3hp saw. You can push boards through this blade as fast as you want (just don't get hurt doing it).Leaves a very good, smooth cut. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars it'll do...
Lets start with the case; IT IS ABSOLUTE JUNK!!! I had read the reviews but figured everyone else was super sinical. Those socket sets that cost $2.99 come in a better case, PERIOD. But, i would not keep the case even if it were steel and here's why. In order to fit everything in the case you have to attach the trimmer to the plunge base. For those of you who use the plunge base primarily this probably be a huge problem.

I also own the porter cable trimmer and as far as I am concerned the to compare equally when attached to the basic trimmer base. This trimmer will do anything my porter cable trimmer will do. would I buy it again, yes.

3-0 out of 5 stars MANUAL FOR ROUTER
I read the other reviews praising or kicking this product.I just got it today and have not used it yet.The instruction
manual is a joke!!! If I did not have a mechanical mind, I would
have returned it.There are no instructions to do anything on
this router.I was able to figure out what was needed to change bases etc.It looks like it will do the job I wanted if for, the
price was ok.The edge guide adjust plate did not fit but Ithink I can fix that. The overall package was not what I expected
from Freud.I wish it had come with a "Porter/Cable" guide adpter.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT DISSAPOINTED, BUT NOT IMPRESSED
I ordered this tool because I needed a smaller router to do trim and decorative work on box's and tables. The price and listed attachments were the big selling point, also the Freud name. I exclusively use their saw blades and router bits, and have never been dissapointed in their performance. The package arrived fairly quickly and the shipping box was in good shape, however when I opened the box, removed the bubble packing and lifted the plastic case out of the box (by the handle), the hinged side of the case failed and dumped all the contents on the floor. Luckily it landed on the carpet and I don't think anything was damaged, but it still was not a good beginning. I have to agree with the other folks reviewing this product, the manual is the pits. There is no parts list that I can find, so I'm not sure I recieved everything or not. I downloaded the picture from this web site and will compare it to what I recieved. The fit and finish of the tool and attachments seems adequate and does have more "metal" than most of the competition. The controls are fairly easy to reach and the handles on the plunge base are comfortable. It does take a little muscle power to "plunge" the router down, but I like the return tension. I have only "played" a little with the router (just recieved it yesterday), but I think it will do what I want it to. I like the soft start and the variable speed and the spindle lock. It will probably take some time and thought to figure out exactly how to use the attachments as once again the "manual" is dismal. The machine is a little larger than I imagined, but I do like the large base. All in all I am not dissapointed but I was hoping to be impressed and I am not. I'll keep this tool and I'm sure it will do the work that I want, but I did expect more from Freud. I rated it a 3 because of the "manual" and the case.
PS....It's now the end of November and I have had a chance to do some "serious" work with this router. I upgraded my rating to 4 stars because of the way this little router performs. I just finished doing some "raised panel" work on a walnut bookcase. Wasn't able to do it on the router table as the original design was changed (after assembly)by the "client" (granddaughter), so using a homemade jig and crossing my fingers I was able to do the panel work with this little router. It performed admirably and I was very pleased with the results. I was able to maintain control and it had no problem with the medium size panel bit.
Am starting to be impressed.
Update...April 2005...I've had this router a couple years now and it has done everything that I ever asked it to do. I keep meaning to buy another "out of the table" router to handle on the bench routing, but haven't found any jobs this little guy can't handle. For flush trimming it is the cat's meow, of course you would expect that, it is a trim router after all but it does the job so well and effortlessly that it puts a grin on your face. Cutting profiles, small dadoes, t-joints, plunge cuts for shelve hangers, are just some of the duties that this router has performed flawlessly over the last couple of years. I use it for freehand carving, initials mostly, on large chests and boxes, and with the speed dialed down it is extremely easy to control. Have become very impressed with this little router and highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, clean cuts
This is absolutely a first rate blade.I use my circular saw primarily for sheet goods, and this is the first blade I've found that cuts smooth, clean cuts with no burning.I have used it to cut 1/2" and 3/4" birch plywood, and to cut 3/4" MDF.Today I used it to cut through a sandwich of two pieces of MDF (1-1/4" total) plus a high pressure laminate.Cuts were perfect with absolutely no burn.

I'm not sure what problems the earlier reviewer had, but this is the first blade I've used that gave me these superior results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 7 1/4
I have over a half dozen 7 1/4" blades in my shop.

I'm a woodworker, set designer - I've done contracting work as well, but with all due respect to one of the other review(s) for this product - this is the best circular saw blade I've ever used.

As an FYI, I use the blade on a Dewalt DW369CSK and the PSI Portable Panel Saw System to get functionality close to a panel saw.

It's a fine blade - not quite as good as Freud's LU85R010 - you still have to sand the cuts with this blade - but splintering is kept to a minimum.

Still don't believe me?This is the same metal blade as Freud's TK303 - which gets 4.5 stars at Amazon. The only difference is the Perma-SHIELD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ouch!
I am no wizard when it comes to circular saws but I simply cannot keep this blade from kicking. I use a powerful, top quality Porter Cable saw and have aligned the base plate parallel to the blade to within .001". I have verified that the blade is perfectly flat and that each of the massive, beautifully polished carbide teeth are razor sharp and properly positioned and have even measured the total run out of the blade as installed on my saws arbor to be within .001". I always use firmly clamped straightedge guides - a Tru-Grip for rips, and a c-clamped triangle for crosscuts. I try to keep the stock well supported and am very conscientious about supporting the waste and ensuring that the kerf does not close in or strain apart.I maintain a steady and appropriate feed rate yet roughly 30% of my cuts end up kicking. The blade binds somehow in the kerf and tears the wood to pieces in a violent explosion of red Teflon coated splinters. It occurs mostly when cross-cutting but also somehow with rips and plywood trimming! I don't know how this is all possible and for quite some time I refused to believe that the blade could be the culprit, focusing instead on the saw, the material, and most intensely, my technique. But time and time again, when I mount my old...Irwin Marathon 40T blade, I get perfect cuts every time with no exceptions whatsoever. I hope that someone else will add their experiences with this blade because it is a major source of confusion for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great bit
I used this bit in a 2.25hp router (and Porter-Cable guide bushing) to make some dovetails with a jig.Cuts in quartersawn white oak were super smooth, with hardly any tear-out.I also used this bit in a router table setup, again with a 2.25hp router, and the cuts were just as impressive.

Overall this is a very high quality bit at a very good price.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars BIG ROUTER BIT
This is one big block of steel. The picture shown is of a much smaller bit. The 50-138 is 2"x2" and is a handful. The carbide is fine grain and razor sharp. It runs true with no vibration. I used it hand held to trim some doors in my home. It cut through them like a knife through butter. The directions recommend router table use only, but with a variable speed Bosch router I had no problems. It does take a few extra seconds to spend down due to centrifugal force. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glass Smooth, Glass Smooth, Glass Smooth
I bought this bit as part of Freuds cabinet making set. I hooked it up to a table that I have Bosch's 3 1/4hp plunge router mounted to. I forgot about the necessity of setting the speed slower to accommodate larger bits and sent the 3/4" piece of oak sailing through at the full setting. Out came a silky smooth panel. It didn't chip, sputter, kick, wobble, or even slow down the router. I wonder what it would be like if it wasn't a brand new bit with a fresh edge on it. Anyhow, I use the bit now at a slower speed setting, and make multiple passes.
Freuds cabinet making set is so well made, that their is little motivation to pick up a shaper. Shapers are known for 10,000 RPMs, thereby creating panels in a single pass that are smooth.
I have never bought a bad Freud bit. Them and Whiteside are my pride and joys. I also recommend picking up an inexpensive carbide tipped set on eBay that are imported. You can get a large selection of profiles and types for the cost of a couple of bits. When making painted moldings for example, you don't need the ultimate in sheen on the wood surface. Although with the dollar conversion and the daily monetary needs overseas, it is amazing how much quality can be produced for such a little bit of money.
Freud and Whiteside are the best, although their are several manufacturers, such as CMT and Viper that are quality bits as well. This Freud cabinet making bit is worthy of your best projects. Buy it you won't be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars A "bit" dangerous
I couldn't wait to finally be able to use this expensive bit that has sat in my Raised Panel kit for years now. I followed all the rules. I purchased a high end router table and installed a 2 1/2HP variable speed router as recommended. It took about 12 passes to safely accomplish a single profile on one edge of a 10" piece of poplar. Even with the smallest adjustments, there were still some break out and kick-back. I'll go back to my nice safe vertical raised panel bit. This bit looks great, very large, and it will end up being a very expensive display piece in my router bit collection. Stick to the vertical bits. I was very disappointed in this one, and it's definitely not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bit
This panel raising bit does a great job of cutting smooth and beautiful raised panels.I purchased this bit as part of a Freud cabinet door building set, and I have been thorougly impressed. The quality of all 3 of the bits is excellent. My Freud bits are the standard by which I measure all other router bits.I've worn out a cheap set of router bits and returned a medium quality set of bits due to their inferior quality. The quality of the Freud bits is well worth the cost.I will be buying more Freud panel raising bits.

The bit has a very large diameter and required some ingenuity to use in my homemade router table.

Make sure you realize that this bit cuts too deeply to allow you to make 3/4" thick panels that are flush with the frame. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Freud's 8-inch safety dado set delivers a flat-bottomed groove that's virtually splinter-free, giving you a supersmooth dado bottom. This stack, when used on table or radial-arm saws, cuts slots, grooves, dadoes, and rabbets in hardwood or softwood. Laser-cut with carbide tips, the blades are also resharpenable. This stack does an excellent job when working with hardwoods and softwoods, but, for cutting plywoods or veneer plywoods, we suggest Freud's 8-inch professional dado or Super Dado set. --Dori Anvinson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Freud is top shelf in my book
Excellent tool with superb craftsmanship.Freud is top quality in my book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I recommend paying extra for better
I used to do all of my ratteting and dado cutting with various size straight/rabbet router bits and a homemade jig/guide fence system.I figured I'd bite the bullet and buy a dado blade. After doing some research and getting over the sticker shock of the average $200-$250 price range for most dado sets, I figured that I go for the SD208 for only $90.I figured that since it is from Freud, it can't be all that bad, no matter how much cheaper it is than the other models.Overall, I think the SD208 is a good buy COMPARED to all of the other dado sets and their prices of 2-3 times more than the SD208.More specifically, here are my thoughts:

POSITIVE:

1) The storage/carrying case is great.Durable plastic with an arbor-like post to mount the blades on.

2)Price.As I said, this blade is a comparatively good deal compared to other sets in the $200-$250 price range.

3)Shims are included. From what I've been told, some sets don't include shims.I can't verify that, but this set does indeed include shims.I believe there are 5-7 differenly sized shims.

NEGATIVES

1)My biggest gripe with this set is that the bottom of the cuts are far from being flat.Whether using the outerblades by themselves, or using them with different configurations of chippers, each cut bottom has multiple ridges/blade marks.

2)Shims aren't size labeled.Freud gives a great little chart showing what size chippers and shims are needed for differentcuts. However, the shims aren't labeled at all. They are merely blank circular cuts of metal. However, as any woodworker knows, you should always run your own test cuts for any job...so I'm in no way livid with Freud. It would just be a little nicety if they could label the shims.

As I said, I think the SD208 set is comparatively a great blade for its price, when viewd against other sets. However, I would recommend not skimping on price and upgraded to one of the higher-end Freuds or a Forrest set.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try to get it sharpened
I run a small woodworking shop and I purchased the Dial-A-Width Dado.I think it is a great dado, but it has a -12 degree grind on it.Every sharpening shop in Denver cannot sharpen it without buying an expensive computer program for their machines and they will not buy it unless they can make enough off the sharpening to pay for it.I called Freud about having them sharpen it and they said they are not in the sharpening business.Buyer beware. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is not a flat tooth blade as listed.
This blade is not a flat tooth design. It is rather an alternating bevel design. One with sharp little peaks on the outer edges in an alternating fashion. The listing currently states that it is a flat tooth design.
It does a decent job, but not as smooth as an older Freud 60 tooth that is no longer available. Of course a 60 tooth will give you a smoother edge than a 40 tooth, but both blades will rip a 3/4" piece of oak on an old Sears 1HP saw without a problem. The Freud TK306 in addition to not being flat toothed, also left a line about every eighth of an inch in the cut face. It was only a couple of thousandths deep, but deep enough to change the cut edge if sanded out. When their are other alternatives out there, I would rather not have to sand and alter my edge. Maybe it was just the one that I received, and others might not have that one protruding tooth, that probably is the cause of the problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great blade, great price
This is not a Forrest blade and you should not expect "glass smooth" edges from every cut. This is a great all-purpose blade at a very reasonable price.

It does very well at both ripping and crosscuts.

The crosscuts I've made show little or no saw tooth marks and no tearout on plywood.

Rip cuts are easy and very smooth.

I'll say it again, this is a great blade at a great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars good value
this is a great blade for a table saw.no it is not a forrest, but for a limited investment, this is a very versatile blade.it rips a very smooth and clean edge.it is not real fast on ripping but it will do the job. does a great job crosscutting. for rough work or general stuff, this is a must in my shop. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Its the real deal
As the previous reviewer said, this bit comes sharp and stays sharp.I have enjoyed super smooth cuts in flat sawn red oak, quarter sawn white oak, poplar, pine, and walnut.I can't say enough how good this bit is for flush trimming both free hand and in a table.

I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is this thing for real?
I was just working with a framer who had this blade on this Mag 77 and I was stunned at how fast this blade cut through wood. It's hard to believe that a blade could make that much difference. All cuts with this blade were effortless. We ripped a 6"x10"x12' beam on the 6" side. You would have thought we had just used a table saw. This is a sweet blade. ...
