Editorial Review

A reliable generator is essential gear for contractors, but it's also important for home owners, campers, RV enthusiasts and others who may face planned or unplanned power needs. The Generac 9777 4,000 watt extended-life generator is just such a tool. The generator is ideally suited for either occasional or everyday use. A rugged, 7.8-horsepower overhead valve industrial engine provides 4,000 watts of reliable electricity and up to 13.5 hours of use on a single four-gallon tank of fuel. The unit is versatile and easy to use, with two 20 amp 120V power outlets, one full-power 30 amp 120V twist lock outlet, and one full-power 20 amp 120/240V twist lock outlet. It also comes with charger cables for recharging 12V batteries. The engine runs quietly and is designed with several added smart features, including an oversized dual element air filter, an automotive-style oil filter, and full-pressure lubrication. It also features a pressurized low oil shutdown system, automatic idle control, and a power surge alternator that protects against power fluctuations when starting and operating several motor-driven items at the same time. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Generator (update)
During the hurricane Charley power outage my neighbor was kind enough to run an extension cord from his generator over to my house and saved all my food. The day we got power back I ordered the 9777 from Amazon with super saver shipping and $25 off promotion.Four days after I received it Hurricane Frances slammed the Florida East coast HARD.This little generator saved our bacon for three days while we were without power. The best thing I can say about it, and the reason I bought this item, is the fantastic fuel economy.I was getting between 3 and 5 hours per gallon while powering a freezer, refrigerator, fans, lights, television, coffee pot and using the built in 12 volt charging function. This compares to my neighbor with his gallon per hour usage. It started up every time with one or two pulls, has pressurized lubrication, an idle function switch and a built in 12 volt charger.I do agree with others that the little foot on the front of the unit could be beefier but still give it 5 stars because of the miserly fuel consumption.Do not underestimate this fact when looking for generators since gas was not available down here in Florida for several days after the hurricane passed.

After this was written Hurricane Jeanne hit us several weeks later.Again, this little generator ran flawlessly for several days powering all of the above plus the window air conditioner (Panasonic, see separate review) that I had purchased for just such an occasion.Fuel consumption was the same and all my neighbors with thier 5500 Watt overkill units were sure jealous of that.I still heartily recommend this generator.

3-0 out of 5 stars faulty oil pressure switch
WE bought this generator as a emergency power unit about 3 yrs ago.we have run it for a total of maybe 40 hours.the last time we used it,itran for 1hr. then shut down. would start right back then do it again. unit is full of oil.unpluged oil pressure switch now it will run. this unit is not very quiet but still quieter than some coleman generators.factory should include extra switch and symptoms of this problem in manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commercial Grade
I recently purchased my Generac 4000 EXL for my RV. ( Also for my home, in the event of rolling power black-outs.The product is very sound in design with big generator features at a economical price.I especially like the pressurized oil system for the engine as it will extend the life of the engine. The electric start is a "must have" for a portable generator. (even more so for a RV)The automatic idle control is great and helps with noise control. (The unit tends to be a little noisy when under a heavy load.) The generator is compact and can easily be stored in the RV.
I have found the generator to be able to handle all my power needs. Even when the AC unit is turned on the Generac 4000 handles the power needs without problems.
One note:
I did purshase a three year service contract on the unit just to take care of any problems. So far I have had no problems with the unit.
I highly recommend this generator... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Performs as Advertised
Unit did the job during the short period of power disruption caused by hurricane Jeanne.Started on first pull out of the box and any other time I have started it.It has more than enough power to handle a freezer, two refrigerators, a few lights, fan, and TV.Despite the oversized muffler, it still produces a pretty good amount of noise (thus four stars). But, it sure cost a lot less than a quieter Honda.

4-0 out of 5 stars Back-up Power Supply
I was more than satisfied on this generator as a backup power supply unit. The 5500 running watts along with the 8,500 starting watts more than supplied my needs. During Hurricane Jeanne, I was able to power a 230 volt 12,000 BTU window air conditioner unit along with 2 refridgerators, a 27" television, cable TV, and three lights. I felt the unit could sustain a bigger load since the generator ran for 10 1/2 hrs on the tank of gas. The only time that I was aware that the generator was loading down was when the compressor would kick in on the air conditioner. The built in regulator kept the unit at a sustained output. It was obvious I did not run the unit at full loading. This unit ran for 48 hours during the outage and we expierenced no problems with the unit. It did not use any oil and was extremely reliable.

On unpacking the unit and setting the unit up was a quick and easy matter. The initial start up took two pulls on the recoil start. From that point on, everytime I started the generator (even after it had been off for 4 hours) one pull was all that was needed.

The neighbors advised me on how quiet they thought the unit ran.

The only draw back was that due to the size of the unit, even though it is on wheels, makes it difficult to move around. Most women would never be able to move it around. The wheels set towards the back so the majority of the 180 pounds are situated directly on the front feet. I would have preferred to have the wheels and handle on opposit sides so when you would pull the unit out from under a protective cover (during the rains), you would not have to pull it all the way out to shut it off to refuel it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good back-up power supply
Good amount of power for the price....

What I like....
great on gas for the amount of power it puts out
good amount of power for the price
fairly lite compared to other equivalent units
sturdy and easily transported
starts fairly easily in warm weather
decent gas tank capacity
low oil detection device is a nice insurance policy
2 year warranty
gas gauge on gas cap
good surge capacity (8500 watts or 55% more the rated load capacity)

What could be improved....
noisey little bugger!
handle is a little flimsy
no electric start

Unknown as of yet.......
not sure how this will start when it's colder, I'm sure I'll wish it had the electric start though! ... Read more

Prep for paint. Clear the driveway. Scrub the deck. Clean the gutters. Wash the car. If you have a lot of heavy-duty cleaning chores to tackle, the Generac 2.2 gpm pressure washer may be your answer. A fuel-efficient 5.0-horsepower Honda engine and high-pressure pump deliver 2,400 psi of pressure at 2.2 gpm. That's more than enough power to remove the toughest stains, mold, mildew, grease, salt, paint, and grime from all kinds of surfaces. Four quick-connect spray tips let you regulate the water flow and amount of pressure applied, while a chemical injection system dramatically increases cleaning effectiveness versus comparable models. Ten-inch pneumatic tires make this unit easy to maneuver around a work area, even over tough terrain, and a prostyle stainless-steel wand provides superior comfort and control. --Carl Thress ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Pump on 2400PSi Washer Failed
After only 2 years of owneship and less than 25 hours of use time the mounting bolts broke on the pump..First one came out and then two more. The repair estimate was $329.00, 90% of the purchase price of the entire unit. The repair shop says the pump is shot and must be replaced. I purchased it from Lowe's, who was no help at all when I contacted them.Generac was even less help than Lowes. Naturally they said the warranty had expired after two years, yes...but less than 25 hours "RUN" time.I will buy another one but not Generac and not from Lowes. The 5.5hp Honda motor seems to be reliable, but it only has 25 or less hours also......I just got very much less than I expected from this unit.I would NOT recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2400 PSI Pressure Washer
My Generac Pressure washer, which I purchased a little over a year ago, has given me good service until now.But....I have only used it a few times and the pump is shot. I maintained it perfectly and followed all manufacturers recommendations. One of the bolts that mount the pump to the housing broke off and that was the beginning of the problems. It is now in the shop and they want 275.00 to fix it.I only paid 350.00 for it. Beware of these pressure washers.I have been told that most of them that are sold by Home Depot or Lowes are made to be used for a short period of time and that they are considered "throw aways" after that time.Very disappointed that Generac uses such cheap parts, knowing full well that they are destined to fail. No more "Generac brand" anything for me.Burn me once, shame on you.Burn me twice, shame on me.I would not be too quick to add this one to your shopping cart.

2-0 out of 5 stars Won't Last Long
The first season I used the pressure washer it was great.I never had a problem starting the motor or with the water pressure. The washer was used to wash vinyl siding on three houses, pier, boathouse, ect.The second year it performed as well as the first until the pump bolts broke and started leaking. Now the pump leaks water more than it pumps. The Honda motor still works fine but the pump is garbage.I wouldn't advise anyone to purchase this pressure washer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars cautiously pessimistic
I purchased the 1900 psi Briggs & Stratton Power Washer four months ago.It started up right away on one pull, then ten minutes later it stopped. My local authorized repair place diagnosed the problem as a faulty part covered under warrantee.Three months later I still don't have the 1900.After several calls and emails to Amazon and Briggs & Stratton I received encouraging customer service that told me the part was due the next day.Still waiting.I'm dissappointed because I've grown up with respect for the Briggs & Stratton name and have only had good experiences with Amazon.I'm hoping the part will arrive, the repair made, and I can regain my confidence in these two companies.I have been told that if the 1900 cannot be repaired, I can apply to Amazon for a new one which is a mixed promise.First, I can apply for a refund is not inspiring and secondly, I face the unknown of whether it was just a lemon or bad design.

I'll have to wait and see.
I will be very dissappointed if the 1900 can't be repaired and Amazon refuses to either refund the purchase priceplus shipping or is willing to ship me a new one, and not a reconditioned one.

We'll see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Briggs & Stratton Reliability
I purchased the Sears Craftsman version of this item that is rated at 2000 psi and 2.0 gpm. The Sears unit also came with the turbo wand and extra oil for $199. Engine started second pull and has continued to do so. Its clearly for residental use not commercial, but does a lot of things very well. Do read and follow the instructions closely about purging air before startup. CONS: Engine/pump gets very hot and will kill grass where it sits. Engine will not empty gas tank. Stops running at about 1/4 tank and requires refill. I'd have it repaired under warranty, but its too darned reliable to have somebody messing with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon Sucks
I ordered a new pressure washer and you sent me a used one with oil all over the inside of the box. I'm pissed.I thought that a web site like amazon.com would not go so low as to dupe a coustomer.I am returning this item and I will not buy anything else from Amazon.com. I will tell all my friends that ask me what I think about amazon.com, not to buy anything from them. Even thought shipping this pressure washer back will cost me the shippihg, it's OK as long as I get rid of this peice of this thing. I'm am very disspointed with this service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pressure washer,,,poor deliverly
Like the other review my pressure washer when delivered was turned upside down and all the washer pump oil leaked all over in the box. I called briggs and stratton 1-800# and after speaking with a representitive, briggs and stratton sent a bottle of oil to me which arrived at my door step in two days free of charge.
Made sure all the oil was out of the pump and put the new oil into the pump and I was in buisness, as it works like a champ. I purchased some quick connectors for the hoses and I'm very pleased with the unit. Could not find one cheaper, the only bad thing is deliverly. UPS turns their boxes upside down reguardless what the box says. You would think when part of the box leaks oil and the odor of pump oil is like gear oil you would think they would get a clue.
I did advised briggs and stratton that the pump oil should be separate like the engine oil is.They stated they would look into it,,,ya right!,,what ever.
Just be careful if you order a pressure washer,,pump oil may have run out of it. Don't run the pump,, call B&S and they should help you out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Machine
This pressure washer is a dandy. The OHV Briggs with AR pump and a sturdy well built cart, runs like a champ. Plenty of pressure, be careful it can blow the siding off your house.Amazon has the lowest price I've seen ,with free shipping what more could one ask for.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great power washer, but don't buy from Amazon.com.
I ordered this power washer after weeks of research.Turns out I could save $100+ by ordering online rather than purchasing locally (after discounts and incentives). The first shipment never made it to me--damaged in transit by UPS.The second shipment arrived to me damaged--again by UPS--as the entire unit was tipped over and much of the pump oil had spilled all over the inside. After days of waiting for a resolution, I finally decided to just return the product, which Amazon.com accepted without arguing, but the return process was a hassle--have to empty all oil from unit then wait 7 days for evaporation before it can be safely shipped. So even after accepting the return, and my instruction not to send a replacement, Amazon.com sent another replacement unit--refused delivery of this one as I was very ticked off at Amazon.com.Turns out the problem is with their delivery carrier. It seems that UPS does not understand what "THIS SIDE UP" means.I finally purchased the unit at a local dealer without any headaches and am very happy with its performance. No problems after 3-4 weeks of use, 2-3 hours at a time--very powerful.I came to learn later that some of the newer models ship with a safety cap to prevent pump oil leakage--the safety cap must be exchanged with a relief valve upon receipt of the unit.My unit from Amazon.com did not come with such a safety cap.So you can take your chances with Amazon.com and hope you get one with a safety cap, because I guarantee that UPS will tip the box over in transit.I am rating this power washer 1 star because of the delivery problem; the unit itself is 5-star without question. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
If you are willing to move up the cost is worth it.This is a serious unit with an AR pump which will outlive the engine. The extra pressure makes cleaning faster.Big box orange store has a Ryobi for $500 -- what a joke.Spend the $250 extra and get a real machine -- real AR pump, real pressure hose, excellent engine -- just quality through and through.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great performance bad wheels
I purchased this pressure washer around April of 2004. For the most part I am very pleased with it. I mostly use it for cleaning car engine compartments and car parts but I have recently used it to clean concrete, bricks, house gutters / shingles and a wooden picket fence. The performance is quite impressive, with the yellow spray tip (which is what I use most often) and max pressure this washer will clean almost anything! I have taken bumper stickers off of car (along with some paint too, oops). My only complaint with the washer is the wheels. The first day I got the washer and unpackaged it I noticed that when I would roll the washer that the wheels would wobble slightly. This didn't bother me too much because I really wouldn't be rolling it very far and I'm pretty gently with the unit also. Well, I'm sure you can see what's coming, one day I took the washer out and was rolling it when one of the wheels fell off. Basically the wheels fit over and are welded to a hub; the hub is then bolted to the frame of the washer. Well, the welds on the wheels really suck. I took the washer to a Briggs and Stratton authorized repair facility, under warranty, they ordered and replaced both of the wheels, which went back order and took almost two months to get. After the wheels had been replaced I went and picked it up and the wheels still wobbled. As it stands right now I am just waiting for one of them to fall off again and I will repair them "properly" myself. Performance wise I would rate this washer a 5 out of 5 but because of the problems I have had and anticipate having in the future I am only giving a 4 out of 5 overall. For $800 (which I might add is a very good price when compared with the Sears Craftsman version that is exactly the same with the exception of an 11hp engine instead of a 10hp for $1150) I would expect better quality wheels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Briggs and Stratton Motor and a pump with a brass head.SWEET
Forgive me for not rating this specific pressure washer but I bought one just like it. I would like to share my experience with you, hoping it will help others. I bought a Generac pressure washer with a 6 HP Briggs and Stratton Intek engine. The washer was rated at 2250 PSI and 2.2 gallons per minute. It came with an aluminum head. Note the best washers have brass heads. To make a long story short, I was pressure washing some paint off of my basement walls when the pump head developed a crack, and I lost a lot of pressure. It was my fault. The reassurances that their is a pressure release valve didn't do the trick. The problem was that I washed a few sq ft, then put down the wand, wet vac'd the water, went into the other room to dump it, then came back and picked up the wand and washed some more. After an hour of this the head went.
Lesson learned, be sure and keep the water flowing through the pump to keep it cool, while it is running, or risk losing the pump. The unit was 400 dollars new. When I contacted Generac they said, buy a new pressure washer. The head alone was over 200, and the pumps ceramic pistons or worse could be damaged as well. Depression set in. It had a two year warranty, which I was not aware of, when I winterized it and decided to deal with it next year.
Their is light shining at the end of the tunnel. Boogle.com solves all. Just type in pressure washer parts, and up came pressurewasherparts.com. On their home page they had a special on a complete replacement pump for 189 dollars(an Annovi Reverberi with a brass head, none the less.)It was less than the cost of the replacement aluminum head alone from Generac. It was rated at 2400 PSI and 2.5 gallons per minute so it was an upgrade to boot. I simply unbolted the entire pump from the briggs, and bolted on the new pump. A few tweakings to tidy up the couplers with teflon tape to prevent leaks, and I was right back in business.
Another thing worth mentioning is that I was at one time disappointed that I did not buy a washer with a Honda engine, but bought the Briggs instead. Well guess what? The Honda engines, as you can see by the reviews, are not holding up. Plastic internals. Give me the good old Briggs heavy metal, and it starts on the second pull.
One last note is that the higher pressure washers do give you more pressure, and in some specific chores that can be beneficial, but overall the benefit to more power is that the job gets done a lot faster. Once you get close to 2000 PSI you can comfortably etch your sidewalk or deck. Less than that, break out a solution of 50/50 bleach and water, and wet mop it on before starting.
With a 2000PSI+ you are etching an area about 3" wide. Holding it farther away, making it wider than that, and all you are doing is rinsing it off. With the greater pressure washers, 3500 PSI for example, you can cover a greater area with the same level of cleaning. Net result, more results in less time. Hope this was helpful. ... Read more

The first guy was right. This thing does not have an OHV engine. It seemed underpowered and was so noisy and rattled so much I had to wear earmuffs. There is nowhere to wind up and store the extremely stiff, unmanagable, hose or anywhere to carry a container for detergent or other additive. And I was extremely surprised when the useally reliable B&S engine developed a rod knock. Now I need a new engine or a crank and connecting rod.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading description
Note that this item does NOT have a OHV engine.Check Briggs and Stratton website, it states it has the quantum engine. The rating is for the description, not the pressure washer itself since I bought a different one after learning of the lack of a OHV engine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality and support
I purchased this power washer approx. 18 months ago, have used it less than 30 hours total and maintain it perfectly. It is used just for home use.I just noticed a leak between the pump body and the head.Upon inspection I noticed water had even leaked into the pump body contaminating the pump oil!!I drained everything, got to looking at my parts diagram and disassembled the head from the pump body. The diagram lists a simple 3 O-ring and gasket kit that turns out they want $150 for!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me!I submitted a request through the Generac e-support site and was told 'ya that sounds right'.

The Honda engine is tops, but a power washer is kinda useless when the pump is a piece of junk, and you are taken for a ride when you do have problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Washer
I have owned this Pressure Washer for 3 years. I use it in my business. I have logged over 200 hours on this unit with not one problem. Very easy to start, uses fuel efficently, quite, powerful. I highly recommend this unit. The Honda engine is the best. The Italian pump performs flawlessly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very PoorCustomer Service
My Generac Pressure Washer broke over 4 times in the first 6 months.Every company can have a problem with a product and this is where customer service is tested. The first warranty shop worked on the unit for about three months. The pressure washer had a problem with the unloader. Some times it would have high pressure and some times it wouldn't.The second waranty shop told me that the pressure washer had a design problem with the unloader and the wand and generac had new valve assembly. Why didn't they put the new design valve in months ago.

Well I spent 6 months drivingmy generac pressure washer to the repair shop for a problem that could have been recalled.I know that the generac people sent out wrong parts and they gave me a hard time about the warranty repairs when the whole time the unit had a design problem.

The unit did start first pull until it had been worked on a couple of times.

I can only judge my generac pressure washer by the performance, quality of repair work, and quality of generac factory customer care service.I was very happy to get out from under this unit.

I can now compare the performance to a new 3500 psi, 4 gpm, 13 horsepower brand x unit. The cleaning performance is better. It always starts. It hasn't broke yet so I can't tell you about customer service. The only negative is my new unit is heavier so it is harder to lift up into a truck.

If the factory customer sevice wasn't so poor I would probally still be nursing the generac pressure washer around.I got tired of wasting my time and purchased a unit that is superior to the generac in all regards except it is heavier. It is amazing how much better it cleans.

I should have scraped the generac the first time it broke. ... Read more

This cover is NOT heavy duty vinyl as advertized. It is a weave, breathable, lightweight blend of some sort.Itoffers no rain protection.I tried"Scotchgaurding" mine butit didn't make a noticeable difference. It fits well though and should keep the sun away from the parts. I was expecting something a little more heavy duty that offered protection from all of the elements. ... Read more
