Editorial Review

DeWalt's D25203K is the tool you need to make holes 3/16- to 7/8-inch in concrete. It's powered by a heavy-duty, variable speed 7.5 amp motor with dust-sealed ball bearings for long life. For super versatility, it switches easily between three modes of operation: hammer drill, drill only, and hammer only. Set it to hammer, and you're ready to chip off materials like splattered mortar. Switch to drill, and you're set to drive bits and fasteners. It's packing 2.3 foot/pounds of impact energy, but the rubber molded handle makes a tough job more comfortable. Need to back out a fastener? Just switch to reverse mode. Should a bit jam, you're covered by the factory-set clutch that's ready to reduce any sudden, high-torque reaction. The side handle can be positioned anywhere on its 360-degree rotation, a great plus for left-handers as well as awkward workspaces. Because there's no battery to lug around, it's only 6 pounds, so it's easy on the user and feels good in the hand.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars no need for cords, unless you want them
I have the entire 24V kit, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the AC/DC converter feature, so that when the uncommon dead battery situation happens, you're not left without power. DeWalt: How about a 24V jig saw, plate jointer, miter saw and handheld planer? I'll buy them whenever they come out.

The only downfall is this drill is a bit heavy for everyday use.I have a 12V DeWalt for lighter needs, but I wouldn't trade this drill for anything.

3-0 out of 5 stars HEAVY-duty but No Clutch
This is not your "everyday" drill. It is heavy and doesn't have a clutch. But, when you need the kind of power that exceeds most corded drills, this is it. Hammerdrills through concrete like butter. The carbide-jawed chuck is a dream. My old 1/2" drill spun large bits all the time. Luckily, DeWalt is starting to use this chuck on its 18V and 14.4V hammerdrills, too. This newer version has two batteries which is good because the batteries don't last any longer than your average NiCd. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhappy
The 3rd time I used this drill for a real project it went snap and the drill bit does not turn anymore. It is out of warranty so now I have to pay to get it fixed. I think I will buy a Milwaukee before I pay half the price to have it repaired. To be fare I was drilling 3/4" holes in 50 year old concrete 2" deep and it broke on the 5th one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good hammer drill for the money.
I have use this drill for brick, masonry, concrete and even hard field stone. It does great as long as it is used properly.

What this means:
Use it in moderation (as with any power tool that heats up)
Do not use a dull bit. This will generate excessive heat.
It should'nt take 15 minutes to drill a hole.
Don't mistakingly use the regular drill feature as a hammer drill. (I have seen this happen with inexperienced users)
Use the hammer feature to your advantage. Put a little force behind it. That is what the side handle is for.

I am not saying this is the best hammer drill out there but it does cost as much either. Don't expect this drill to make large holes for huge anchor bolts or even pipes. Common sense says, if you need to drill a bigger hole get a bigger tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Drill - When Used Properly
I have had my 505 for about 3 years now and have not had any problems with mine. Most people don't use hammer drills properly and that's why this one has had a bad rep on Amazon.com. Hammer drills are more for smaller holes in concrete and brick and the occasional large hole. The largest hole I think I have ever drilled with mine is 5/16" and the drill will drill these all day long. If you want to drill larger holes in masonry,or want a drill that will do whatever you ask of it, get a rotary hammer. They are designed for more abuse and have a larger capacity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
I am a carpenter and have been using dewalt tools for the past 16 years. I purchased the 18v hammer drill and sawzall expecting solid top of the line tools. In 14 months of use I have purchased 2 xr batterys because of failure and had the clutch replaced in the drill. The sawzall has been in for repair once also. While the drill was in the shop I purchased a 15.4 volt panasonic drill. When I received the drill back we installed a deck using the two drills side by side. The panasonic lasted about 4 times as long while driving faster and better. The chuck on the panasonic is far better and the tool is better balanced. The sawxall has a jerky stroke and has no stamina. I am very dissapointed and will not buy again. My older dewalt drills were reliable and tough. not the case with these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt Mega Combo does Mega Work
I run a small remodeling business that gets into a little bit of everything, so flexibility and versatility are important at all times. This is a great combination of tools for anyone that must use a variety of fasteners in diverse situations.Having a drill/driver and a rotary hammer with common batteries and charger eliminates the duplication that usually comes with cordless tools. The recip saw is one of the tools used most often on our jobs, so popular that we often compete for its use.The light is an added "bonus" that often comes in handy.
The run time for all three tools is impressive, along with the power of all three.I have even used the recip saw, with a long blade, to cut dowm small trees.
Overall, this set was one of the best purchases I have made for my crew. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best rotary hammer made
I have been in the plumbing industry for 12 years and have been using a Dewalt 565K rotary hammer for the installation of gaslines for about 3 years. I have used just about every other rotary hammer on the market and in my opinion the 565K is by far the most reliable and BEST there is. I especially like the lightweight body and the dust cover where the bit slides in. More importantly I love the performance of the 565K (it's quick). As anyone in new construction will tell you time is of the essence. Definately a five star product. Thank you Dewalt for making my job much easier. John Sink, Kimmey Plumbing ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not last
I used this drill for about a year.Because of the dual speed and hammer/drill combo it is very versatile. However, it burned up on me tonight while running some screws into concrete.I expect my tools to last a lot longer than 1 year.I would recommend that you look at the Milwaukee or Bosch if you plan on doing anything other than light work.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works, It Works, It Works!!!
I have a habit of sticking with yellow first of all, But I can't say it does not do the job, I drill holes in cement on a regular basis and it does the job, Though I must say if your going to do alot of drilling into cement with large drill bits over 1/2 inch , you should think about a more heavier duty drill.
This one is small and not something you can really lean on with weight and the plasic case on the drill does not remind me of something that is forgiving.I will be able to get a better judge of this product after it's been droped a few times and still stands up to the task, not that this is what happens all the time, but it will tell you what is heavy duty and what's not !

1-0 out of 5 stars what a piece of junk
I owned this yellow piece of garbage for less than a week. The cheap plastic case cracked while hammering into concrete. I thought I'd go with DeWalt this time since it was cheaper than the Milwaukee. Sure am glad I was able to get my money back and buy a real tool. No more toys for my crew. Milwaukee all the way, I should have known better, I have yet to have any Milwaukee tool fail on me. Don't know why it cracked, maybe it was too cold outside or something, but regardless, that should not have happened. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very impressive
I love dewalt. I have a tablesaw, half a dozen cordless tools and a miter box made by them. I've used the 14.4 for a couple of years now I think and it beats the drill drivers I've had in the past (mikita, porter cable) hands down. The beef I have with this hammer/drill model is for one thing, it's pistol grip in the back makes it very unbalanced and fatigueing. Second, this model delivers only 290 in/lbs of torque. I can hold the chuck tight and bogg it down to stop. On the other side is the DW983K which has a nicely placed pistol grip in the middle of the drill/driver and delivers a bruting 400 in/lbs of torque. I can't bogg that down. I bought and sold the hammer drill in the same week. You would have to kill me to take my 14.4 drill driver away. If you want a hammer drill, get a hammer drill but don't think it will do the same job. I believe this is alot better that my old 14.4 ever was especally with the new Metal Nichol Hydride batteries. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars best in its class
ok, it's heavy, but,.. its got no cord and it's lighter than the 18 volt model. it will take a good bit of abuse and it's quite powerful for cordless. you'll have trouble finding competition with higher rpms. the variable speed switch is smooth and provides alot of control. the clutch works well. it will drive long deck screws and pre-drilled lags comfortably. the hammer works great for small holes(ie tapcon) and well enough for occasional, larger holes, depending on what you're drilling into. it's nearly impossible to find competition that builds a serious duty cordless pistol grip drill(T-handle drills are fine for folks in labcoats or suits who just hold a drill up to the light to admire its balance or price point, but,.. pistol grip drills are for folks who use and abuse them every day and need the added leverage and accuracy that only a pistol grip provides). the only dewalt batteries that i've had trouble with keeping a charge on are the ones i followed dewalt's advice with, to recharge as soon as you feel a loss of power. for what my experience is worth, it's still better to run nicad batteries down all the way, with, say, a flashlight, before recharging. i agree with dewalt, though, that it's a good idea to stop putting a heavy load on the battery once it starts losing power. good idea too, i think, to let the battery cool before charging.

)

p.s. don't waste your time trying to find a holster to hang this drill on your belt. it won't work. if you need to put it on your belt, the big lug is the only way to go,.. and one of those S looking paint can holder/hook things works well on ladders too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and sturdy, but too heavy for some tasks
This is a great drill for rough carpentry, but it's a bit heavy for woodworking applications. If you're building a deck, this is the tool for you - it's great at boring large holes quickly and cleanly, and it's got plenty of torque to drive lag screws. The clutch and electric brake make it great for delicate work, BUT IT'S TOO HEAVY!If you need to use it one-handed at arm's length, good luck controlling it.The grip and trigger are very nice, and the variable speed is really helpful. The keyless chuck works nicely - this tool feels very smooth and well-machined.My only serious complaint (besides the weight) is the location of the direction-of-drive switch. The drive direction can be changed without changing your grip on the tool - you just press the button with your index finger or thumb. Some people might like this feature, but I find it's easy to bump the button accidentally when working one-handed.I've only used the hammerdrill feature a few times, but it worked very well. This drill was originally purchased as a gift for my father to use at his camp in the Adirondacks so that he could drill holes in rocks (for boat anchoring) while standing in water without the risk of electrocution. It's primarily been used for rough carpentry and deck repair/rebuilding.THIS IS AN EXCELLENT TOOL AND IT WILL SERVE YOU WELL, AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FIND IT TOO CUMBERSOME.Note that the model I've used is a few years old - it's the exact same model number, but mine doesn't have the automatic spindle lock or the extended-run batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best drill around
from the moment i bought this drill, it hasn't been put down! building, sheetrocking, repairing all made easier. extremely usful adjustable torque settings and electric brake allow for precision drilling. dual speed alowsfor different levels of power and control. can be very powerful with hammerfeature. i do recommend buying the accessory kit with the rapid change bitattachment. great drill, well worth the price. ...
