Editorial Review

A drill/driver is a great tool, but not for every application, unless of course you consider stripped screws part of the charm of doing it yourself. Some jobs simply need the added muscle only an impact driver can provide, and the 14.4-volt cordless DeWalt DW054K-2 is one impact driver worth a look. At first glance, the DeWalt driver looks a little weak. After all, it measures only 6-1/2 inches and weighs just 4.1 pounds. But don't let appearances fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a champ. The driver produces an amazing 1,150 in./lbs. of maximum torque, making it ideal for even the toughest jobs and the tightest applications, where comparable drivers simply couldn't reach. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and an all-metal quick release chuck that accepts 1/4-inch hex shank bits. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than Makita 12v for my use
I tried a 12v Makita impact driver after reading the reviews. It was a revelation, but the angled handle was awkward and a little painful to use at arm's length. The DeWalt handle is 90 degrees to the motor and is easier to use for me.The Dewalt trigger isn't quite as sensitive as the Makita, but it's very good. The 1150 inch-pounds (vs 867 for Makita 12v) seems just right....it spins longer at high speed before the impact starts, so long screws drive quite a bit quicker. The Makita 12v is definitely more controllable and has a the ultimate variable trigger, but I can drive both 6 x 3/4" wood screws in cabinet hinges and sink 4" deck screws out of sight in anything with the DeWalt. It does the formerly impossible.I smile every time pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
I install cabinets for a living. My crew and I have fallen in love with this tool . I am buying another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
This is a solid, heavy-duty impact wrench using 1/2 inch sockets. It comes without a case or sockets. It is powerful, easily driving 5/8" lags (5 inches) into old, very hard wood (with a pilot hole).I had a small job to do but it was worth the money for this wrench.

Editorial Review

If you're looking to add a solid, reliable cordless impact wrench to your tool crib, the heavy-duty, 3/8-inch, DeWalt DW051K-2 12-volt cordless impact wrench might be worth considering. This mid-level impact wrench has everything you'll need to loosen and tighten tough bolts and drive fasteners through metal, concrete and wood surfaces. Plus, it's small enough (6-1/2 inches long and 3.5 pounds) to get into places larger units with comparable features simply cannot reach. But don't let its size fool you. Under that slight exterior beats the heart of a workhorse. The wrench churns out a whopping 1,200 in./lbs. of maximum torque with speeds ranging from 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 3/8-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll save the fifth star for later...
Having used many different brands of cordless drill/drivers over the past 15 years, I was curious about this new wave of impact drivers.I had the chance to use this DeWalt driver (a friend's) and I can report that I was extremely impressed with it.In all fairness, this isn't a comparison since I have never used any of the competitor's impact drivers, but the DeWalt was more than I thought it would be.

Power - there's all you would ever want here.I was driving 3" screws into treated lumber and quickly noticed two things. The driver didn't hesitate while driving the screws home and compared to my standard drill/driver I had to apply much less pressure on the rear of the gun to keep the bit from slipping on the screw head.

Size/Weight - You don't notice how much a good drill/driver weighs until you use something like this that is more powerful and yet weighs less.Though the size is tiny compared to what I am used to, it doesn't feel unnaturally so.

Value - though this is probably the best tool I have ever used to drive a screw, it is expensive so the vaulue per dollar isn't what it could be.If I were starting from scratch on a collection of tools, I would think seriously about this one.As it is, I already have two DeWalt drill/drivers and will probably not justify replacing them at this cost.

Overall, this is a great tool that I feel justifies the impact driver craze that is currently going on.If you build decks for a living, run to buy one of these. If you are a weekend warrior, get more bang for your buck by getting a good deal on a 12-14.4 volt drill/driver instead...

5-0 out of 5 stars great product!!!
This is a great buy and trust me you wont find a better price.I love this tool, it saves me a lot of time at work and is actually really lite.I know that almost every technician i work with at my dealership uses this tool and they all love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars great tool
I am a professional mechanic and have used many cordless impact drivers. This is the best I have run across. I wish it was 14.4 volt so it would use the same batteries as drill but that is my only complaint. Plenty of power will break non impact sockets and small bolts beware. Lightweight and powerful. I will buy 18volt 1/2" impact in future when funds allow.
My recomendation BUY IT! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Heavy-duty work requires a heavy-duty tool. The 14.4-volt, 1/2-inch DeWalt DW055K-2 cordless impact wrench delivers on every front. While deceptively slight in build (the unit measures only 6-1/2 inches in length and weighs just 4.1 pounds), the DeWalt is long on performance, delivering an impressive 1,550 in./lbs. of maximum torque with speeds ranging from 0-2,400 rpm and 0-3,000 bpm. Consequently, it can get into places larger units simply cannot reach, delivering powerful results without the added cumber of an extension cord or oversized frame. Of course, size isn't everything. The DeWalt is also built tough throughout, with an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 1/2-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease. A textured, anti-slip comfort grip provides ultimate comfort and stability. A specially designed impacting mechanism reduces kickback -- and fatigue. And a variable-speed trigger switch with electric brake means better overall control.--Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only rating it against my other screw guns
I've used the DeWalt 18 volt driver/hammer drill for years, and I really have thought it was a good product.I once dropped my drill from a second story and after it bounced a few times it still worked, so I've been convinced that the DeWalt product was a decent brand.

I recently got this 14.4 impact and have loved using it. It's lighter than the 18 volt I'm used to and easy to handle. It drives long screws no problem. There are no dials to turn, no speeds to set and the battery seems to last a long time.I've used it for setting electrical finish, which takes a light touch, to drilling holes in stucco with a masonary bit (doing what I normally would have used the "hammer drill" function for).

I do know carpenters that swear by the Makita impact driver, so I can't compare brand to brand, but if you've always used a normal driver drill and haven't yet tried out the impact driver, you're in for a treat. It really does a much better job.

And to think, I used a Yankee back in the day, and I'm not that old,,,,,well ok, I'm pushing forty, but still, I cut my teeth with a Yankee screwdriver,,,,,how far things have come.

2-0 out of 5 stars Consider other brand
I would only recommend this tool to someone who uses it for home.I am a contractor whom owns numerous Dewalt cordless tools and am disappointed in most. I own the 14v and the 12v impacts, and in a matter of 6 months of daily use they have both burned up arbors. The batteries will not keep a charge close to origional. B&D service centers have repaired both under warrenty, but they will not admit to any design flaw. "Heavy Duty", I don't think so.

3-0 out of 5 stars tom; carpenter
this dewalt impact drill spins faster and has more power for driving screws into concrete or steel but the batteries last only half the time as my makita 12 volt impact.so i use my makita mostly cause i dont have timeto be changing batteries every 15 minutes.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for around the house
I remodelled my deck last summer, and used this to fasten the new decking (5/4" x 6" Trex boards). With a fresh charge, I found I could drive about 50 2-1/2" composite deck screws, with no predrilling, before the battery needed recharging. It's not the ideal tool for someone who does this professionally, but it worked great for me.Since then, it has come in handy for dozens of things around the house. In particular, it's very good at driving Tapcon concrete screws. The impact action produces a great deal of torque for its small size, but it lacks a clutch, which makes it easy to twist the heads off screws. That aside, it has lived up to all of my expectations, so I think it merits 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool in 2 decades!
Being a door installer, I ordered this tool as soon as it came out.Awesome! Drives hinge screws in with no problem. Drills up to 1/4" bits without impacting. Where was this tool 5 years ago? My 18v drills are semi-retired, who needs a corded drill now. An earlier reviewer said he had problems finding hex drill bits. Most home improvement stores carry them in sets and you can sharpen them accurately with a Drill Doctor sharpening system when they dull. But as always we want more speed, can't get enough. I'm sure that with 2 brands out now that are faster, Dewalt will step up to the plate and deliver the knockout punch, til the next round at least. You can't go wrong with this one. Editorial Review

Ideal for home auto work, DeWalt's 1/2-inch electric impact wrench is a burly, no-nonsense tool that delivers 240 foot-pounds of torque and 2,700 impacts per minute. The tool is well balanced, weighs 7 pounds, and is 10-7/8 inches long. The trigger, a two-finger toggle switch, lets you comfortably rotate between forward and reverse--a feature especially handy for rocking loose stuck nuts. The impact wrench also features a detent-pin retainer that lets you lock a socket on the anvil (to remove, you depress the detent using a small pointed object, then simply pull the socket off). The motor's brushes are easily accessible and replaceable, too, and thanks to DeWalt's advanced brush system, which automatically stops the tool just before the brushes wear out, you'll know when it's time to replace them. All in all, an impact wrench isn't a particularly complex tool: you want one that's solidly built and packs plenty of power. DeWalt's DW290 is exactly that. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget it for lug nuts/Auto or Truck use
I could not remove lugs torqued at 95ft/lbs,just sat there. My air impact easly removed them, and I could remove the lugs by hand without a problem. They were torqued with a torque wrench,Husky brand(not a cheap wrench),not rusted and no extension and impact socket was used(craftsman). Tightening was better but not even 95 ft/lbs, and you have to stay on the wrench along time and it will get very hot. I do not tighten with an impact normally but I wanted to see what the tool would do. Tried 3 of them from a local store, could not be an isolated problem, bad design for non woodworking use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool, veryyy durable
I build deluxe redwood and cedar swingsets for a living and use this wrench daily. In fact i dont think anyone anywhere uses a single tool as much as i use this wrench. In an average day i will sink between 300-500 3/8inch lag bolts into relativly wet redwood. i burned out another manufactures gun in 3 weeks last year this lasted me the whole year, went in for dewalt free maintenance service in january and is still running strong. I ve dropped this tool more times than i can count, often use it as a hammer( don't recomend that but in a pinch it works), used it in heavy rain(dewalt says not to but I use a GFI to be safe), and tossed it around my truck in all kinds of conditions and all it does is keep working. One thing that went wrong was the detent pin on the anvil broke, which didn't affect its performanceI just stuck a broken nail in the hole till dewalt got me the replacement. Also its seem s that this gun is a little weak when brand new as I just bought a new one for my helper and it took a about 2 days to get it up to speed with my old one. It now runs fine though and its probably just a case of ait needing a little break in time. This may explain why some people have had trouble un torquing lug bolts, also could be that their lug nuts are really overtigtened by an air impact or a long extension bar. All in all a great tool that I would and have bought again .

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really good enough to remove lug nuts off a car

An impact wrench is essential gear in many garages and workshops and on work sites where heavy-duty bolts and fasteners are required. Unfortunately, some impact wrenches lack the versatility needed to get the job done. The DeWalt DW053K-2 heavy-duty 1/2-inch, 12-volt cordless impact wrench provides a sensible solution. Weighing in at 3.5 pounds and measuring just 6-1/2 inches long, the DeWalt cordless impact wrench can get into places larger units simply cannot reach. Yet, even with its slight exterior, the wrench can churn out 1,400 in./lbs. of maximum torque, making it powerful enough to handle many of the toughest jobs. The unit features an all-metal transmission, a durable magnesium gear case and a 1/2-inch hog ring anvil that accepts impact sockets with ease.
