LIFES' TRADE-OFFS

Excellent Hose clamp
If you're in the market for a good quality hose clamp at a good price, look no further.I have used this clamp for almost a year now and it has performed above and beyond my wildest expectations.When I'm not clamping large hoses with this clamp, I use it as a paperweight to hold my important papers on a picnic table on a windy day.The only problem is that I keep on misplacing my screwdriver, making it hard to me to loosen the clamp to put it on a different hose.I like to change hose clamps every 3 months or 45 miles, whichever comes first, on my wooden-horse car.And no, not as big as the one in the mythology books, but just big enough to get me to work and back (clamp salesman with Clamps-R-Us).

Not the Preferred Choice
The manufacture's review should state: "designed to fit SMOOTH piping to...." not just "designed to fit piping to ...".Very tough application when to comes to seating a ribbed hose and the compression needed to secure that surface to a fitting.

The steel band clamp should only be used in one type of application. That being where you are putting two SMOOTH surfaces together, like a garden hose or radiator hose. But with a DC application of a ribbed hose, the steel band clamp is NOT the preferred choice, use the wire clamp.
The steel band clamp will only strip and never be fully seated trying to compress and secure the wire rib to the smooth DC fitting. The steel banding and worm screw is not designed to do that task and provide the needed pressure to fully seat the ribbed hose. Whereas, the wire clamp will actually strattle the rib on both sides and create a perfect clamping fit.

I tried to save the twenty cents over the wire clamp, and wound up stripping the clamp thread on about 50% of the applications with the steel band clamps. I antied up and spent the extra cash and got the right product, the wire clamps for the ribbed DC hose. ... Read more

Make your own...
First of all, you don't get the fence shown in the picture, at least I didn't. Jet say's that is a seperate option...universal fence. So what ya get is a piece of hardboard with melamine on both sides and two standard t-tracks.
I bought this table to put on my Delta DP200(see review), it is meant to mount on the adjustable table and increase your work area. It is a nice thick piece of "wood" and the t-tracks are paralell to each other. But I could have made my own for a third of what this one cost. I have kept it and mounted it to my drill press, and made a good fence for it. I does enable me to use hold downs instead of clamps all the time. Also depending on the press you have, you have to make a cutout on the back side of the board, so your height adjusting crank will clear the table.
It is well made and stout, it does the job but I was disappointed. Recommend you make your own. ... Read more

Possible solution to chuck wobble
It is possible on a three jaw or four jaw chuck to get the jaws out of order of assembly and change the accuracy of the chuck.Especially if it is a chuck where one adjustment screw moves all of the jaws at once.Also if you can't fix the wobble by changing the jaws around you may use a lathe chuck grinder mounted to the cross slide to tru the chuck jaws up.It is a fairly simple operation if you can borrow the grinder set up.Hope this helps.It is common in machine shops to freshen the chuck jaws up occasionally even if they don't cause the stock to wobble.

It would be great, but...
First of all I am not a home improvement enthusiast, The web site added that, Also you can't give anything less than a star to complete this form, I don't give it even a half of a brown dwarf. I work in a maintenance shop as a fabricator. It would be a great lathe for the price if it were somewhat accurate. The operators manual has you remove the 3 jaw chuck, clean it and inspect it. Then just put it back on and everything is good, wrong. Either it came out of round during this little clean up and inspection or some component's placement has caused it to be way out of alignment! So far out that you can see stock wobble. I have had this apart and together several times over the years attempting to get it true and have had it best with .005" wobble. The manual has no alignment instruction for the chuck. We use it for VERY COARSE, unimportant stuff. If Jet wants to send someone out to deal with it, fine, I won't be looking for them. I don't recommend anyone buy a Jet unless you are somewhat of an expert, someone that can take a sloppy lathe and make it good. ... Read more

Great Table Saw
I bought this one for my home wood workshop. First of all, this is a heavy piece of equipment. Make sure the delivery guys take it close where you intend to install it.

Assembling this table saw took me about 6 hours, take your time, my package contained all the nuts and bolts needed (and then some), nothing missing.

Overall I am very happy with the tool, I use a Woodworker II blade and it cuts very smoothly. The reasons I am not giving it 5 stars are as follows:
1. The fence locking mechanism is not easy to adjust. It may be that there is something wrong with mine, but I have had to re-adjust it several times
2. The Router lift is not flush with the router table when inserted, home made fix required.

Jet table saw very reliable
This table saw has proven to be a top performer. Despite comments from my Father-in-law and Grandfather about tools from overseas, both were impressed with the quality of this saw (both have much more experience than me). I have used this saw to make several cabinets and small furniture items with great results. I also have used a 8" dado with equal success. Spend more money on better bits
These bits are very poor quality. I noticed straight out of the box that there were dings in the blades (mostly the larger ones), a bad sign to start with. I do not appreciate having to hone a new bit before using it- it should be usable right out of the box.

I researched a lot of bits before making my purchase. These bits are made in China. I had read other reviews here stating that bits made in China are lacking in quality. But then I discovered that these bits are associated with Jet, a company known for its high-quality. With this in mind, I decided to give them a try, and bought the 10-piece set from Lowes for $25 (the 7-piece set is $15).

Visually, they appeared inmpressive, with their golden titanium coating, and attractive box. After closer inspection though, I noticed that the titanium coating was bubbled up on a few bits. Truth be told, the box is much better quality than the blades!

As a test, I tried one bit of the set, the 1/2" one, on pine and oak. I set the speed of my drill press accordingly for the bit's size (a very important step, especially with larger bits).

The bit went through the pine at an adequate speed, but would not eject the chips, which consequently got stuck in the bit and had to be cleaned out manually. The bit also tore out a large chip out of the bottom of the piece when it exited. This typically won't happen on quality bits of this size- though I admit a backing board under the piece would (hopefully) have solved the problem. I attribute the tear-out to the dullness of the blades on the bit.

The bit was completely hopeless in the oak. Drilling was very slow the entire time, again attributed to the dullness of the blades. Again, the bit choked on the wood chips and clogged, in spite of raising the bit partially out of the wood from time to time in an attempt to clear the chips. Consequently, the entire hole was scarred with burn marks, and the wood became very hot.

I also own a 1-3/8" Freud steel bit and a 7/8" carbide-tipped bit from www.mlcswoodworking.com. Neither exibit these characteristics. Both work very well, and are worth the money.

My suggestion is to buy either a set of better bits, or to buy just the bits you need at the time from a quality company like Freud. You will find that they are definitely worth the money. Expect to pay $8 and up for individual quality bits.

If money is no object, I suggest investing in the Freud carbide-tipped 7-piece set. But then again, you probably didn't buy these bits if money was no object! ... Read more
