4-0 out of 5 stars Fills a niche that is otherwise missing
I needed a jig saw to cut out some outlets for putting up bead board.I settled on this one because I didn't need it for everyday or professional use and I was wasn't going to spend $100+ for a DeWALT, PC, Ridgid, Bosch, etc. only to use it 3 times a year.

This jig saw bridges the gap between the cheap ones that couldn't cut through butter, and the pricy ones. The Skil is actually priced right in the middle but I read the reviews and stayed away from it!!

I was worried about this saw after I bought it because of the low price but have been pleasantly surprised.Free hand is a little sloppy, as you cannot turn off the orbital action like on most top models.Other than that it is a great value

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Saw At A Great Price!
I just purchased this saw and it is great! It has power yet it is quiet, easy to view line-of-cut, convenient features (I've had no problem with the dust extractor device, it's made to clip on and off), and I've had no problem following a line, unlike the first review guy who NEVER used an orbital saw before (there is Variable Speed Control for guys with lesser arm strength!). Just as good as the way more expensive brands!

1-0 out of 5 stars I've Had Lots of Power Tools
Needed a new jig saw to cut some countertops.I did some research into this saw and liked the amps and size.I have never used an orbital saw before, but sounded like a good idea.Imagine my surprise when my cut was all over when freehanding and still horrible when using a straight edge.I tried all three settings but all cut the same.I do like the quick blade release but that is about it.I almost wrecked an expensive countertop and had to pull out my 10 old reliable skill jig saw.Would not recommend it and would return it if I hadn't thrown away the box. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bad quality
The tool idea is good, however the power and quality of materials is inferior. Mine is already making an awful noise and "freezing". I used it to cut 2x4's during a room's renovation. I'll never buy black & Decker garbage again.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is an orange blob of frustration
I got an older version of this saw (two years ago) and unless there have been significant improvements, save your money. The gel handles are probably a good idea as the unit we have did equal damage to what's being cut and the person doing the cutting. As for the damage it does to whatever you're trying to damage, the word minimal comes to mind. Out of frustration I've turned it off and tried to use it as a standard saw but the blade is too short to be useful. I take it off the shelf every once in a while thinking it can't be as bad as I remember... it is. Each time I've tried it I end up thinking it would be faster to just bludgeon the piece I'm trying to cut but, unfortunately, it's light weight makes it fairly useless as a hammer.

I tried to slip it into a friend's truck after he helped me build a deck. He found it, uttered a few choice words, and threw it back. When a guy turns down a free power tool, that's saying something.

Can't think of one redeeming feature of this tool. I give it one star because zero isn't an option.

Buy something useful with your money like a pet rock.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a decent little saw!
I just bought this saw for an incredible price at a day-after-Thanksgiving sale (Menards). In fact, the $19.50 I paid is 1/2 the normal price in the local hardware stores. As for the saw's performance, I have some mixed feelings.

My motivation for buying this saw (other than the incredible price) was to use it with various blades to cut 4" pvc pipe, tree limbs, etc. instead of using handsaws. It does all of this fairly well, but it would perform much better if B&D came out with a wider assortment of blades. At just 3.4 amps, this saw is not overly well powered and thus it should have an assortment of blades available so as to maximize the efficiency of the cutting action. For instance, the wide woodcutting blade has teeth that are fairly fine - which is good for precise cuts in material such as pvc pipe and lumber, but not so good when cutting tree limbs or any other situation where you want an agressive cut. All I got with the saw was a wide woodcutting blade (the blade that is normally pictured in the saw) and a narrow blade to use for cutting metal pipe. In my opinion B&D needs to come up with some more blades!

Having said all of that, I really like the ingenious design of this saw. The gel grips are great for preventing hand fatigue. Although I will probably never have a need to "convert" this saw to its jigsaw configuration - I have much better jigsaws for that - I think that this feature might be handy to the novice weekend warriors out there.

If you can find this saw at a bargain price I recommend it as worth the money!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice for the budget minded DIY'er
This jigsaw has a few features you don't normally find on jigsaws in this price range, like:
1. A powerful / quiet motor.
2. Tool-less fully adjustable foot for bevel cuts. Adjusts up to 45 degreesin both directions (But no degree markings.)
3. A variable speed trigger that really works.
4. You can attach to a vacuum and catch most sawdust.
5. "Sightline" cutting guide helps you stay on course.
6. On board blade storage (Holds 3 blades.)
7. Tool-less blade change.
This saw does not have "orbital action."If you want that feature you have to step up to the next model.
So far, I am very pleased with the price, ease of use, performance and features of this jigsaw.

Editorial Review

The Black & Decker ZipSaw multi-project tool is really several tools in one. As a jigsaw, the ZipSaw produces a 3/4-inch stroke that cuts through wood, metal, plastic, carpet, linoleum, and cardboard. The tool can also be used as a sander/polisher to remove rust and paint, polish surfaces, and sand in tight spaces. It accomplishes this transformation through the use of various, easy-to-change accessories that lock into place with the click of a button. The shoe can also be removed without tools in order to attach the circle and edge guide, an accessory designed for cutting circles and ripping without a pencil line. A variable-speed trigger and adjustable speed dial allow the ZipSaw to operate at a range of 1,000-3,200 spm. The speed dial has six numbered settings but can be adjusted to any position along the way for total speed control. The ZipSaw also works well in tight spaces other tools can’t always reach. A lightweight, ergonomic design gives it a very comfortable feel and allows it to be used both vertically and horizontally for even greater versatility.--Carl Thress ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute, ergonomic, but.....
I bought this jig saw based on its ergonomics and its ability to be used in projects beyond cutting. However, I had to return it due to some issues:

1. It is underpowered. It was extremely difficult for me to cut through wood, even though it wasn't as thick.

2. The cuts are not straight as it is very difficult to cut when you have to "push" the saw for it to work. My arms were hurting when I finish cutting a piece of pine measuring 3/4" x 12" x 3". This saw has a very nice attachment, ostencibly to use one of the borders (which needs to be parallel to the cut) as guide during cutting. However, you need to have at a minimum distance between that border and the cut of about six inches. In my case, the width of the piece of wood was about 3 inches so it did not work.

3. It has plenty of nice accessories (such as an add-in for sanding) but one can also do so by using a drill, with a sanding kit.

Very nice looking tool, but not as useful as I expected. I bought the Black & Decker JS600K (which is the same manufacturer as the HS600K) and the difference is noticeable. The JS600K is not only more powerful and useful but also it is $10 cheaper.

If you are looking for a sig saw, do yourself a favor and don't get distracted by the multitasking ability of this machine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best jigsaw
I picked up this jigsaw because of the relatively low price and because my father has a B&D jigsaw that has never given him any problems.I also liked the quick clamp blade system.

For light work around my house the saw does an adequate job. However, as soon as I cut anything tougher than 3/4 inch particle board I notice the blade wandering. At first, I thought I was feeding the saw too fast but even when creeping through the material (pine 1x6 as well as a 1 3/8 inch solid core door) the blade still wanders.

Additionally, the dust blower/extractor doesn't work very well.

Finally, this little saw really gives you a workout from all of the vibration that it produces.

If you only need a light duty jigsaw and don't want to spend a bunch of money, this saw will work for you.If you will be cutting tougher stock, I would recommend spending the extra money and going with a higher end saw (personally, I have my eye on the new Bosch jigsaw, as 6.4 amps should cut through anything).

1-0 out of 5 stars Just plain junk
After buying this Black & Decker jig saw, I would never buy another B&D tool.I saw a jig saw from Skil for $5 less, but it didn't have all the features this one did, so I went for the B&D.The skid plate is held on by 2 screws, and very poorly.... I couldn't get it tight enough to not bevel the board I was cutting. The knob for turning the blade popped apart the first time I went to try it, had to go searching for the spring.Absolutely no quality engineered into this tool.I returned it after trying to use it for about a week and purchased the much better made Skil.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shook a lot but did the job.
Just bought this saw today to help round some plyboard edges.By the 4th corner I had it perfected...but the saw still shook a lot.I had it cranked on 6 so maybe that's why (I like the variable speed feature).Quick blade insertion mechanism was fantastic and I did not have the blade pop out even once.I tried to use the included tool to cut some straight 1 inch cuts but I couldn't keep the screw tight enough to maintain the 1 inch margin... B&D, good idea but you need some other way to secure this (even torque with a wrench didn't help).I didn't attempt using it for the circular cuts, just used a compass instead which did the job.
Nicely removes dust as you saw, although my vacuum cleaner didn't fit onto the contraption that blows the dust out the back (good idea though).I'm happy with the saw and the soft-cover case for the price I paid. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This is the perfect recip saw for the home do-it-yourselfer. It's priced attractively but doesn't skimp on the features. For the price, we're impressed with the 7.5 amp motor and variable speed, all the way from 0 to 2,400 strokes per minute--plenty for whatever your project needs. Also high on our list is the fact that it weighs only 6.8 pounds. If you've ever hefted one of the higher-end models, you'll appreciate the light weight, especially noticeable when you're cutting over your head and in other awkward positions. You'll really be pleased with the tool-free blade-change system; it's fast, easy and foolproof. When you're cutting, you'll notice that the ergonomic rubber grip and the cushioning on the front boot really cut vibration and improve your control. We can imagine putting this baby to use doing cutouts in drywall and studs for things like inset cabinets, cutting PVC for all kinds of projects--pipes during renovations, subfloors, joists, framing in a new door--you get the picture. A recip saw is one of the more versatile tools to have in your collection, and this one's a great buy for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the weekend warrior
This is a rugged saw with enough power for most jobs. There are a couple of plain steel starter blades included although you'll need better for serious work.I bent the wood blade on my second cut. Now, I *was* cutting pressure-treated wood, which is metal insinuated into the cellulose fibers. But even the "manual" (just a single large sheet, with many folds) recommends using bimetal blades because of their superior durability.I picked up a couple for about 5 bucks total and got to work.

The included case is nice.Note that you'll have to remove the blade when stowing the saw; it won't fit otherwise. But you can transport the saw without worrying about snagging the cord or damaging something.

Nice for the price.

First, I am a casual, around-the-house handyman, not a professional. So this saw is great for me. Not too expensive, but does everything I need it to.

Comes in a nice case, and I bought a couple of heavy duty blades at Home Depot for a project I needed to do. ... Read more

I have used this saw twice.I handle the saw with both hands and both times I got my secondary (not trigger hand pinched) by the blade fastener after I turned of the saw (the blade take a while to stop oscillating.I have noticed that the new versions of the saw have a guard to prevent this.

5-0 out of 5 stars great value
This is a great saw with more power than it's price would sudgest. It eats through whatever I feed it with power to spare. It cuts a straight line and has great visibility because of a built in blower. It does tend to make a mess, but, don't they all?Just have a shop-vac handy. The blade storage compartment is convenient but it somehow manages to gather dust.I got it in a kit with a corded 3/8" drill and 1/3 sheet finishing sander.

4-0 out of 5 stars Money's worth
I purchased this product at a retail outlet for less than shown here and it came with a nice case and the "quick clamp" blade change system.Compared to the jigsaw that I owned previously, which is now in the yard sale box, this tool is a jewel. The only problem I detect so far is the 45 degree angle cut is only applicable in one direction and you have to be left-handed to cut at that angle. You can't compare this with the one's that cost $150, but for the money you can't beat it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good saw
One reviewer mentioned blade removal on the Navigator...well I'm one of those who quickly scans instructions and then go my own way. I got the blade off but couldn't get in back on after numerous tries. I put the Navigator away. A year later a big limb falls in my backyard and I started my usual handsaw log-cutting then remembered the Navigator. Some patience and another instructions-reading rewarded my efforts to reinstall the blade which did turn out to be very easy. Also easy was cutting up that limb in just a few minutes as opposed to a strenuous half hour or so. Recently I had a dishwasher installed which required modifying a cabinet. The carpenter was having a rough time under the sink trying to cut through the cabinet floor so I suggested he try the Navigator. Made quick work of the job and he was impressed with how well it worked. Said he'd have to get one. It has been a good piece of equipment to have around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effortless!
I needed a jigsaw to replace a burned out one. I was all set to get a Craftsman when I saw the Navigator. I liked the idea of 2 saws in one and boy am I happy I bought it. I was taking down door moulding and found out I needed to cut back the floor moulding as well. The Navigator didn't let me down.If not for this saw I probably would still be cutting with a hand saw now instead of writing this review. Thanks Black & Decker! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Is it a Jigsaw or a Lighter?
I purchased this item quite a few months ago to do some light (ie 1/2" to 3/4" pattern cutting in pine) cutting. It was chosen primarily because of its variable speed, relatively low cost, and the quick release mechanism.

It was adequate when I used it for only a few minutes at a time (though it was relatively unstable due to the vibration), but when I was cutting some 1/2" soft pine for my wife's picture frame, it burst into flames after about 10 minutes of continuous usage.

No, I'm not kidding -- it caught on fire (the housing specifically). Well, fortunately I only encountered 1st degree burns, but this sure angered me. After opening up the item afterwards, the design defects were obvious. Apparently, the bearing datums in the plastic housings were not well designed, leading to overheating and finally a short circuit.

I bought a Milwaukee (6266-22) afterwards. Trust me, spend the extra money if you plan on using this device for more than a few hours in its lifetime. The Milwaukee is a pleasure to use. Or, if you want to skimp on the money just avoid B&D.

I don't typically have use for a jigsaw, so when a project I was working on required one, I purchased this product mainly because it was cheap. The first one I purchased I had to return because the "Quick Clamp" mechanism was broken.Once I got a working one in use I was disappointed with its performance.Instead of cutting smoothly through wood it has a tendency to jump around, particularly in plywood. It isn't well built either.Several of the high stress points, including the~ "Quick Clamp" are made of cheap plastic. If you are at all serious about your wood working, look elsewhere. If your primary objective is minimizing your costs, then this may be a fit for you.It does work, but leaves som ... One of the best innovations to the jig saw has been B&D’s Quick Clamp blade change system, cutting time and frustration. This saw’s a beauty not just because of that, but because of its smooth orbital action, nice variable speed adjustment and its wide, comfortable trigger. Line of sight, another sore spot with jig saw users, is excellent, making this a great choice for the novice as well as the experienced do-it-yourselfer or crafter. I have used Black & Decker Power tools all my life.So when I purchased this jig-saw, I was surprised by the poor quality of parts used. For example there was a platic clamp used to hold the blade. It worked for a couple of days then it started releasing the blade.I will not purchase any more tools with B&D name on them.

This jigsaw works fine, except for on very important glitch. When using the wood blade included in the package, the blade constantly pops out, no matter how thick,or thin the material you are cutting.

I made a mistake and did not use this saw until well after the time allowed for returns. If not I would have returned it immediatley. My recommendation is to not buy a jigsaw with this "quick clamp" option. Get one that requires you to screw the blade tight.

My attempts to contact Black and Decker about this problem met with less than spectacular results. This purchase was a waste of money. ... Read more
