Editorial Review

Hang new kitchen cabinets, tile the bathroom wall, install a border in the baby's room, add shelving to your home office--the Black & Decker BullsEye laser line generator and stud finder is the tool for the job. In fact, the BullsEye is two tools in one. The built-in stud finder works at depths up to 3/4 inches and provides both an LED and alarm indicator to signal when you've reached the edge of a stud. Once you locate the studs in the wall you're working with, you can then hang the BullsEye at the appropriate height using either the included drywall pushpin (for drywall surfaces) or the keyhole insert with a standard screw or nail (for all other surfaces). Activate the self-leveling laser lines, and the built-in pendulum levels the unit automatically. Depending on the light conditions in your work area, the laser lights should be visible up to 10 feet in either direction. No more chalk lines or straight edges. Just a clean, accurate guide for where to place your fasteners. The included target cones are effective up to 50 feet in either direction of the unit, providing an overall work surface of up to 100 feet in length. The BullsEye works best indoors and is intended for the home enthusiast. Professionals will likely want something a bit more versatile (the BullsEye works only on a true horizontal axis, so it can't determine plumb or set a straight line at any other angle).--Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How did we live without this?
This tool is WONDERFUL.It's the best stud-finder we've ever used.It actually is accurate!I just used the laser level to hang borders in three rooms, and the job went a whole lot faster and smoother than I anticipated.Worth the investment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Handy, but not super accurate
This is a really good product idea, but unfortunately mine didn't live up to expectations. My laser level is about an inch out of level over 10 feet. That's probably within building specs, but I figured a product packing a laserbeam would be a lot more accurate.

I have some walls that are 20 feet long. I'd hoped to put this level on the wall and hang a bunch of pictures along a level line, but I can see the few inches of error when I look for it, and that'd drive me nuts.

I only use it for jobs that my spirit level can't span, but that are still under about 10 feet. Anything bigger and I get the chalk line out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
I love this tool. We built a new house and I used it for hanging curtain rods, verticla blinds, pictures and shelves. Our wall decorations look organized and very stylish. I like the fact that you can mark on the adjacent wall.

We have these shelves for my kids room that are beautiful but are a total nightmare to hang. It took me 3 tries at our previous house to hang them because there is no room for variance. I hung them in 1 try using this tool.

I have read other reviews where people complain about the holes left when hanging the device and it's nonsense. It really is a pin sized hole.

This is the best tool I have purchsed in 10 years because it saves me so much time when doing projects. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Need a reliable straight line without spending a bundle? This is our choice. Granted, this laser’s not self-leveling, but it’s easy to level and does produce a dead-on accurate horizontal or vertical line. It attaches easily to a wall with either the magnetic hanging pin or the included drill anchor wall mounts. Because it’s a single pin hanger, adjustments are as easy as the touch of a finger. Nice storage bag keeps the tool clean and protected. Just the right tool for the homeowner who’s adding a chair rail, wallpaper border, shelving, cabinets, tile, or a host of other projects. You could spend more for a self-leveling unit, but we think this suits most homeowner’s needs.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed, poorly engineered.
The purpose of this tool is to project a relatively long and straight laser line for alignment, construction, or what have you.As an engineer and general fan of Black and Decker's products, I was sadly surprised to find out that this product is neither useful or accurate.

The good news:
It runs on a 9v battery (cheap and easy to replace).Comes with two different mounting options in addition to the magnetic base.

The bad news:
1. The line is inconsistently bright along it's projected path.It seems about 2 to 3 times brighter in the center than on the far edges. This effect is disturbing because it's also thicker in the center. At the edges, the line is so dim that you need enhancement glasses (sort of like safety glasses, but red in color) to see it OR you have to use it in near total darkness.

2. The bubble levels inside the unit are too small, inaccurate, and not adjustable. When I placed this unit on my tablesaw (which was precisely aligned and leveled) it shows (incorrectly) that the saw is tilted about 2-3 deg. This is a huge problem and makes the unit difficult to justify. The owner's manual says that the levels are only calibrated to the laser line when held or hung up against a vertical surface.Okay, but what if you want to lay tile, place a fencepost, or align cabinets?

3. Mounting the laser to the wall requires drilling a hole. The base for wall mounting requires a small hole in the wall and as you rotate the base, three prongs expand out, temporarily locking the base to the wall. It's a pretty good system, but other manufacturers have systems that allow vertical surface use without drilling. It'd be a hassle to have to fill and paint the little holes constantly.

4. The bonehead that designed this did NOT for some unknown reason, make the sides square. So you cannot simply lie it on either side and expect a horizontal line...I'm lost on this one.Miserable engineering at it's worst.

In short, this unit is really only good at projecting a straight line.YOU have to level that line.Get a plumb bob or a 4' level, set this up and adjust the line it projects to level, then you're set. But, on the other hand, if you have a 4' level and plumb bob, all this unit provides is a simple, straight line, confirming your measurements.

Pros: Small, simple, 9V common battery power supply.Comes with case.

Cons: Not self-leveling.Must use other tools to adjust.Case not square.Cannot project line from a horizontal surface.

Even on sale for $20, it's hard to justify this product. It really only projects a line...and not even a straight one.A straight edge would work as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think it is...
"It's my favorite tool" or so I told my kids when they gave it to me for my birthday. In reality, it is a basic laser pointer in a fancy package.Yes, it produces a straight laser line on the wall or floor, but you need to use a manual level to get it correct. It is difficult to hang on the wall and cannot be done without putting a small nail hole in a spot where you probably don't want one.Spend the extra money and buy a better mounting, self leveling and more accurate one if you need things to be absolutely perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Door Stop
This is the BIGGEST waste of money there is. I can eye a better level line than this thing. It doesn't give you a level line until you use a real level, to level it???? whats the point??? Save your money. This thing makes a better door stop than a laser level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to toolbox
We recently moved from an older home where the walls were so solid you could hang pictures anywhere. our new place is new though and as seems to be the usual case uses a very thin kind of plaster board. After unsuccessfully trying to hang some pictures and having them fall down I got this and hey presto, everything is now up and most importantly staying up. The manual wasn't very good and it took me a few goes to get the hang of it, but I'd recommend it to anyone who has pictures, and, or heavy mirrors to hang. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Here’s a combo no homeowner should be without. The gel-handled drill doesn’t feel like any other we’ve handled, surpassing our expectations for comfort and ease. Most drills these days have keyless chucks, and this is no exception. We’re impressed with the 24-position clutch and the torque you get for any drilling job. What’s great about this package is the self-leveling BULLSEYE laser level/stud finder. It’s light, compact, easy to use and accurate with a range of 20 feet (10 feet in both directions). For larger jobs like decking and fencing, the target cones will produce a 100-foot line you can rely on. We can imagine hanging shelves without a hassle, laying out tile, putting up a chair rail or wallpaper border and being 100-percent level. The level’s got a neat little gripper on the back, so all you have to do is press it into the wall; the resulting mark is so tiny, it won’t be noticed. The stud finder will locate studs for you, so you know you’re drilling into wood. Priced right for the homeowner and do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Bulls Eye Auto Leveling Laser Technology means you don’t have to worry about accuracy. The Crosshair Laser Level works handheld as well as affixed to a wall—-all you have to do is put it where you want it, push the button and you’ve got two dead-on accurate vertical and horizontal lines. A neat feature is the locking switch, which maintains your level line for you. The unit is light as a feather, has rubber grips for a good, comfortable hold and is a great value. Homeowners will find dozens of uses for it, from establishing a plumb line without messy chalk to hanging pictures and shelving. It’s powered reliably by a good old 9-volt battery.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars just what I was looking for!
This unit replaces an earlier B&D laser level with stud finder that lasted all of just a year, which doesn't surprise me---Black and Decker is generally not great quality, especially their power tools.

However since there is nothing else on the market (at least nothing I could find) which provides the same function in this price range, I am biting the bullet and getting another one.

I'm just happy that this model at least doesn't pretend to be a Stud Finder too like the other one did---it couldn't find a stud to save its life.Totally useless marketing gimmick, that.

Oh well, until somebody else comes out with a laser self-leveler like this in the same price range I guess I'll just have to put up with B&D ("Broken and Disabled" in some circles).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite 90, but still...
I bought this more for the fun.The feature set - an autoleveling or fixed 90 dg. set of laser lines is very useful. The tool comes well equipped in a fitted case - nicely done, that.

The autolevel horizontal line is right on - as checked with a Stabila 6'6" level in a recent kitchen install. It was quite useful.B&D claims a perfect 90.You wish. Over on the pro side, you pay upwards of $250 for +/- 1/4" at 100', so for $50, you get less. Mine was 89.86 dgs as checked on a 20' right triangle.I have to cheat it open 1/4" in 9' to do tile grid layouts.

Bottom line:it got stolen and I want another.

3-0 out of 5 stars B&D CrossHair
This tool is easy to use and adequate for the weekend DIY'er. It only illuminates two laser lines (up and to the right) which can be a limiting feature. Lines, however, were level at short distances (less than 10'). I have no desire to have to use the marking target for greater distances. Lock layout feature is good. Quality of beam is adequate to poor - you have to decide whether to save the line or split it when marking - line fades near end of projection and in places completely dissappears on wall (smooth, previously painted drywall). Marking for pin-up to wall is good b/c it is in line w/both beams. For myself - this gadget is going back where it came from while I look for something else. For the money - you get what you pay for - avoid the stud finder combo. ... Read more
