Editorial Review

Long nails into hardwood? No problem. Working overhead? It's only 4.2 pounds. Hate having the exhaust in your face? Tool-free, 360-degree adjustment takes care of that. No time for jams? Clearing takes no more than a couple of seconds because of the quick-release nose. The magazine is made of nylon, but it seems as rugged to us as any metal magazine out there. That's also why this nailer is so easy on the hands. Add to that a nicely padded grip and a selective trigger and you'd think you have the perfect nailer. But get this—there's a built-in dust blower that clears light debris and dust from your workpiece. Hitachi quality leaves nothing to want.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Superior power drives 2 1/2" nails into the hardest woods
  • Selective trigger for flexibility in firing operations
  • 15 guage finish nails
  • Shoots 15 gauge 1 1/4" - 2 1/2" Angled finish Nails
  • Lightweight at only 4.2 lbs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable and Tough as Nails
I've used this gun quite a bit and it hasn't misfired yet. It's simple to use and feels solid, made to last.Plenty of power too; sinks 2 1/2" nails into pressure treated fir with no problem. In white pine I had to back the pressure off to keep it from sinking them TOO deep! The air nozzle feature should be on every finish nailer. You'd be surprised how handy it is; no need to put the gun down to clear away the chips etc... that always seem to get in the way of a good fit.The only drawback I found is that you'll have to go to a good hardware store to find an air fitting for it.Once that's done it's the perfect finish nailer.

5-0 out of 5 stars great nailer
i bought this nailer several months ago.great finish gun.the little button near the top/side of the gun is an air blower.great to have available when doing base, to blow away the crumbs from falling plaster or debris that is in the way. just push and it blows it away, nice added feature that the others don't have. have had no problems and would recommend this highly

5-0 out of 5 stars If I said it once I said it a hundred times.....AWESOME!!!
I am a part time handyman and a full time enthusiast of quality tools that do the job right the first time.I read reviews, get advice and use friends tools or rentals prior to purchasing. And prior to buying the Hitachi (what an awesome roofing machine) I rented and was sold on the Bostich RN46-1.

The Bostich I rented performed well.It jammed once every coil and I did have to set some of its nails with a hammer, but all in all a good machine. Then there was the one I purchased. This nailer must have slipped past quality control at Bostich. What a peice of doo. This unit jammed evey 10th nail and I was setting every 5th with a hammer. It took what should have been a 20 hour job and turned it into a 40 hour job. What a shame for a product whoes companies reputation for its nailer is very high.So it was at this point I went the path of the Hitachi.

I have only seen and used one other Hitachi in my travels and that was a framing gun.I was impressed with its balance, weight and perfomance. It was this experiance a few years ago and the reviews here on Amazon that led me to the coil roofing nailer NV45AB2.

All I can say is AWESOME!TOTALLY AWESOME (I am a child of the 80's)!!I took the gun out of the box, gave it a few drops of oil and went to town on a roof repair.I used 5 full coils of nails and did not have one jam nor did I have to set any of the nails manually. AWESOME!!!I can't say it enough.Had I gone this route to begin with I would have saved 20 hours on my original job and hundreds of dallars. And the price!!!Amazon has the best price in town ($385 at Home Depot and $325 at Lowes).

Do yourself a favor and buy the Hitachi.Don't let the Bostich name and their market saturation get the best of you.If you want quality and longevity out of your tools, go with Hitachi.AWESOME!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars No other nail gun is even close!
I am a roofing contractor. I have tried a few other brands of nail guns but none can come close to the quality and durability of the Hitatchi! There is nothing else to say. You can not beat this gun. It won't dissapoint you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome nailer
I researched several roofing nailers and based my decision on the reviews I read about the Hitachi. I have shingled two roofs so far and have had zero problems. The second roof I did was for a friend and he helped with his Poter Cable nailer. It was picky about the nails that were used, jamed often and had no depth setting. The Hitachi kept plugging along and never missed a beat. The depth setting was crucial for the different situations when installing shingles. After years of hammering nails and seeing other guns in action, I highly recommend the Hitachi NV45AB2. ... Read more

Time is money, so no wonder this is one of Hitachi's best sellers. Its ability to fire plastic-collated full round head framing nails from 2" to 3-1/4" means you're getting the job done faster at an amazing three-nails-per-second. No fiddling with tools to adjust the drive depth, either, which is another great feature. Though it's not the lightest nailer we've handled at 7.9 pounds, it's so nicely balanced that the weight isn't really a detriment. It didn't jam on us, but if it should, we think clearing would only take a second due to the nice open nose design. Framers, roofers and truss builders will really get their money's worth out of this workhorse.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
We're building a new home and during the framing stage I watched the framers use this gun all day long, day after day with no problems. When I asked them how they liked it, they said they would not use any other gun but this one. We're nearing the end of construction and I decided to tackle the rear deck myself (lots of money to be saved in doing so).I decided to take the plunge and buy my first pneumatic nail gun.I'm not a professional builder, but, I can tell you I do love this Hitachi framer. In fact, I'm so excited about it that I've ordered additional nailers and a stapler to put in my dream shop which is going up at the same time as the house.Actually, the shop is finished - something my sweet wife reminds me of each time we visit the building site.I keep telling her "We just have to maintian our priorities!"

2-0 out of 5 stars was a great gun
well like most things someone will take something like the NR83 which is THE BEST FRAMER MADE and turn it in to NR83A2/NR83A which are sub standerd guns compared to the nr83
my reasons are this
nr83a2 offers a depth of drive whitch is a joke and wont preform its one use it could be used for (shear nailing)
they redesigned the nose pice which causes the gun to catch on the work surface while bump nailing floors and walls
safety springs are not removeable which shouldnt be done but there are times like toe nailing blocking where it makes it safer to have them removed also they changed the magazeine which now impares you from instaling a standerd saw hook which is a must my last complaint is the rapid fire or single shot selecter can and will break leaveing you left in single shot mode. these guns will work but its a big disapointment to me and many others. Hitachi you need to get your s*** togther

what you should do is
go to your local pawn shop and buy a used NR83 for half the price of these new guns or go on ebay then buy a flush tip for it you can buy these from bigfoot tools.
one used NR83 is better than three new style guns

5-0 out of 5 stars This nailer just plain works
I'm in the middle of building a 10X16 shed with this nailer.I've used it for the rough framing, nailing the sheathing, and framing trusses (lots of toe-nailing).I've had no problems with this tool - it does a fine job.I'm using the BC nails available on Amazon - 3&1/4 in framers (comes coated) and their 8d ring-shank galvanized for the sheathing.

No regrets about buying this - it's saved a world of time! ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of Hitachi’s most popular nailers, and for good reason. It’s practically impossible to jam and fires a rapid three nails per second. At first gander, it appears heavy and unwieldy, but in hand, it’s amazingly well-balanced and comfortable, and Hitachi’s nailers are among the most reliable we’ve seen. It runs off air pressure of 70 to 120 psi, delivering plenty of "pow" even at the lower end. Hitachi recommends this model for floor and wall framing, truss build-up, window build-up, construction of subflooring and roof decking, wall sheathing, and mobile home and modular house construction. The accompanying EC12 compressor provides plenty of air pressure for any pneumatic nailer at 4 cubic feet per minute at 90 psi and a 14-second recovery time. The twin tanks are stacked, so it’s compact and portable, perfect for the job site at 60 pounds.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sure, in the consumer world, Hitachi means stereos and televisions. But in the world of construction, the company sits at the table with the heavy hitters. Hitachi's 18-gauge finish nailer has--for starters--an excellent grip. One thing we love in a nailer is a good grip. Basically, it's a safety issue: our hands sweat on the job, and we don't want to lose the handle on a gun and ping a buddy across the room. Some companies don't seem to get this, but Hitachi delivers, with a 360-degree rubber-strip grip that sticks to the hand without being bulky or interfering with the smooth firing mechanism. Because of its clever all-metal alloy construction, this nailer is remarkably lightweight, too: only 3.2 pounds. The exhaust port pivots 360 degrees, letting you keep dust to a minimum and oil off your work. We also like the side-loading magazine and jam release, which save your fingers the trouble of going where they'd rather not.

One feature we'd like to have seen is the two bumper plates on the front and back that are showcased on other Hitachi models. These plates really go a long way toward protecting a power tool from unnecessary wear and tear, and, in the end, they really do extend a tool's life by quite a bit. But such criticism is relatively minor. This finish nailer is a solid piece of work. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ergonomics, poor function
First off, I really like the solid feel of this brad nailer, and I've been pleased with its power. Its weight helps minimize recoil, and its grip is more durable than the foam on one of my coworker's Senco brad nailer. In terms of feel, I perfer this brad nailer over the comprable Paslode, Porter Cable, and Senco models (all of which are available on our job sites).

I gave it only 2 stars because it's very sensitive and has a flawed firing mechanism. The nailer often double fires and misfires. It's like the driver bump-fires way to rapidly or doesn't align well with the brads, and as a result, two brads are often hit followed by a total misfire in which no brad gets hit (but the driver still comes down and puts a dent in the wood).Double firing is really annoying, especially on stain-grade wood, because it means that we have to spend extra time finishing the additional brad mark. The second brad that gets fired sometimes isn't countersunk, and in bad situations, pretzels--maybe because it comes out of the gun while the user is pulling it away from the work piece.Compared to my Paslode T200-F18 (which I currently rely upon exclusively), the Hitachi's driver just doesn't hit the brads accurately enough.I know this because in a side by side comparison, the Hitachi tended to pretzel much more often than the Paslode.

For the money, this would be a good brad nailer if I could tweak it so that it never double fires.I installed a sequential trip mechanism that Hitachi sold me for around $10 (I don't remember the exact price), and that reduced the tendency to double fire.Hitachi should offer this item for free.I also tried removing the safety spring and taping back the safety on the nose like one of the other reviewers suggested. That solved the double firing and misfiring problems, but resulted in a dangerous tool.If I were doing benchtop work, the missing safety would probably be OK, but when I'm up on a ladder installing trim, constantly changing hands with the nailer, and putting it in and out of my tool belt, I like having a safety.

If you want a flawless brad nailer that you can trust to never double fire from the first time you handle it, it's probably worth spending more for a different brand. The price difference of a more expensive nailer isn't much compared to the value of the work carpenters & woodworkers create. In my opinion, the only thing worse than double firing is not countersinking the brads, and the Hitachi has plenty of power to avoid this latter problem, provided it only fires one brad at a time.

This tool deserves 2 stars instead of the 3 I originally gave it, but I couldn't alter my original rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hitachi 2" brad nailer
I've owned on of these for 3 years and use it almost daily. I like this brad nailer a lot. It's been totally reliable and has all the power I need. It never double-fires and only jammed up once when the brad hit something under drywall. The wider-than-normal contact area on the nose means I don't have to worry about leaving a dent in stain-grade material. Although I usually dislike the cheap blow-molded cases that comes with a lot of tools, this one is actually sensibly designed. For 80 bucks, it's hard to beat. The only thing Hitachi forgot was a hook to hang the nailer off of your belt or a ladder, so I guess I'd really rate it 4 7/8 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice and powerful for the price
I purchased this little cost-friendly brad to replace my 1 1/4" brad nailer and could not have been more pleased w/ it's performance. Using my 4 gallon compressor at 90 psi, it sinks nails very well through oak into oak plywood and is good for about 40 shots without having to recover. ... Read more

When it comes to designing nailers, Hitachi keeps the end user in mind. Their siding coil nailer, engineered for serious siding work, impressed us with its light weight (only 4.6 pounds), which does wonders for your arm (not to mention your productivity) toward the end of a long day. We're also suckers for a good grip, and the NV65AH has a great one--it's rubberized, and, unlike a lot of other tools we've known, it's also a width that normal-size humans can get their hands around. This nailer's got an easy-to-operate depth-of-drive adjustment as well, to countersink or flush-drive nails, and a smooth firing mechanism. The air deflector pivots 360 degrees--a nice, user-friendly feature.

One feature we'd like to have seen is the two bumper plates that go on the front and back of other Hitachi models. These plates really go a long way toward protecting a nailer from unnecessary wear and tear, and, in the end, they probably extend its usage quite a bit. But, on the whole, this is a nice piece of equipment. We'd be happy to fire it up any day. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pro tool but needs focus if you are a DIY'er
I am a DIY'er.I bought this nailer to install Hardieboards on my house. This tool saved me a huge amount of time over a hammer.

However, I am not a pro and here is what I found challenging:
1.The depth gauge was fairly easy to use but after a while I found that I had to just nail in a course and quickly hammer the nails home.Call it user inexperience (which clearly was the case) but I ended up under-driving rather than over-driving on purpose.
2.If you don't watch the plastic nail strap or cut it off frequently, it could twist around and foul the tool, requiring a stop to fix it.
3.It comes with the "automatic" trigger function: Hold the trigger, push, and nails will pop out until you let go.I found that difficult to work with: I can see how that would be useful for roofing, but for Hardie Boards, it made me pay too much attention to trigger pull/release, rather than paying attention to quality work.

Why 4 stars and not 5: Because the single-trip (one pull, one nail) mechanism doesn't come with the tool.I had to order that from a Hitachi dealer (referred by Hitachi themselves when I called) and it cost an additional $60-$70.Porter Cable, for example, will provide a different trip mechanism for free for their finish nailers (or at least they did when I bought one). This should have been included, or at least the price not so excessive, for such small and few parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars All about the speed.
Excellent for quick and speedy installation of siding. Nails Hardie siding like it was pine.Make sure you adjust for correct length of nails or you will constantly be cleaning misfired nails. Some nail brands shoot better than others.Overall nice and handy tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to JAM!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent gun, worth the price
i purchased two of these guns last year and have used them heavily, without any problems. these are great tools. very well designed. light enough for siding all day, compact and very fast for framing, sheathing and subflooring. i don't waste time loading nails every minute. no jam problems. just don't try to load mangled coils, duh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Nailer, Great Buy
Amazon's Tool Crib shipped on time with no glitches. The 75 nailer is typical of Hitachi's great nailers, and has the versatility to do framing and siding. Mine has gone through about 4000 2" Senco and 3" Bostich nails for fence building without a miss and little sign of wear. Since I only use it once in a while, I'm confident it will last me a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once again, Hitachi produces a superior product.
I was in need of another siding gun, and saw the NV75AG just hit the market. Being that I own the siding (4 years use) and framing (8 years use) versions Hitachi makes (both superior products), when it came time to get a second nailer for siding the choice was clear. For several years I have been contempating getting a coil framer. When sheeting walls on the ground I loose considerable time reloading with the stick framer. This gun holds over 225 nails in one coil! And should my stick framer blow a top seal, or sider fail, the NV75AG will allow me to continue.
The gun functions flawlessly, with both the depth adjustment on the gun and a non maring tip included. Hitachi includes all allen wrenches and fittings, something other makers should but don't.
Only complaints, cost and plastic skirting. Cost, well it takes the place of 2 guns. Skirting, easily removed. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This tool’s daddy, the NV45AB, was a fine piece of machinery, but Hitachi took it back to the drawing board and after a few significant improvements, put this NV45AB2 coil roofing nailer on the market, where it collected awards and praise from all corners. Deserved, we think. The best change is the new side-load magazine, so reloading is a breeze. And there’s no more fiddling on the roof because the depth of drive adjustment is tool-free now, too. Hitachi dumped the racket-grip handle in favor of a great rubber grip which is much easier on the user. Rubber pads were incorporated into the metal body protectors, ensuring a firm grip on the shingles without slipping. Hitachi kept the best features of this nailer’s predecessor, too—-things like pneumatic feed and return (most nailers we’ve seen have spring return), which help power the tool through tar and buildup that might otherwise trigger a jam. Tough housing stands up to shingle scrapes, and a carbide-tipped push lever means long life for the tool’s nose. Even at a nice, light 5.2 pounds, this workhorse fires an impressive three nails per second. Roofers will like the changes.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorado roof contractor
Although I don't own this newer model, I purchased an almost identical older version several years ago. The only real difference
between the two models is that this "newer" one shoots plastic AND metal head nails. Let me tell you without hesitation this gun is absolutely great. Yes the nails cost a bit more than the hand-driven ones, and it does take using it in a certain way to insure the nails are fully driven, and once in a while you need to fully set the heads with a hammer {as in all other guns}and once in a while you might "lose" a few caps here and there, but using this gun is at least 7-10 times faster than hand driving the plasticap nails. It's alo durable as mine is used constantly. In fact I ordered a secong one last week. Looking forward to using the new one in my flat roof installations. "Don't know what I'd do" if Hitachi ever stopped making the nails for this gun. And there's no camparison between plastic-headed nails holding down felt in winds, and staples. Forget the staples or reguler EG roofing nails. Plastic caps all the way and the felt will survive even 80 MPH winds!

4-0 out of 5 stars very frustrating .... revised
This tool seemed to be a godsend so I went for it. Unfortunately it sounded much better than it is. Like the previous review, my gun hangs up after maybe shooting 10 good caps. After that I have to pull EVERY single cap into place MANUALLY. The instructions are just an add on sheet which don't give you ANY indication if there might be an adjustment to correct the problem. When I'm on a roof trying to beat an incoming rain storm I don't want to hear about bringing it to a service center. I need to take care of things right then and there or lose money!!!
The gun comes with NOTHING, not even the air connect nipple!
This gun is extremely expensive and shouldn't be a source of frustration and monitary loss to me.

Since this review I have spent some time tracking why the gun wouldn't perform as expected. The problem with the hung up caps was/is invariably the flimsy paper roll that holds the caps. If it's just slighly deformed/wavey it hangs up the caps. Now that I am aware of this, I pay attention when reloading and I am actually pretty happy with the gun now. Still hangs up at times, that's why I gave the gun 4 stars now instead or 5.

3-0 out of 5 stars happy but dissappointed
Have a Plasti Tacker Pro and it is great for drying in a roof but have found it to be unreliable. The plastic caps hang up just before dropping into place and jam. Thus driveing a nail without a cap. And sometimes resulting in wasting several plastic caps. It also leaks air at the trigger if held open forrepetitive driving. I did have the O-rings replaced in the trigger valves but it still leaks air just like before. For the last couple of days I have been searching for a web site that provides professional technical advise but I don't speak German and that is the only thing I could find except for the places to buy something, they were in English. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT
A VERY LIGHT AND EASY TO USE TOOL, OUR COMPANY HAS 6 OF THESE GUNS AND FIND THEM WORTH HAVING. YOU CAN ALSO SHOOT PASLODE FASTNERS IF THE HITACHI NAIL IS HARD TO FIND IN YOUR AREA. THE HITACHI FASTNER DOES WORK BETTER DUE TO THE STRONGER PAPER STRIP.
THE GUN IS LIGHT AND FITS IN TIGHT AREAS, UNLIKE THE PASLODE AND SENCO POSITIVE PLACEMENT GUNS. THE GUN CAN ALSO BE FITTED WITH A SAW HOOK AT THE BACK OF THE MAGAZINE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot find nails!
I called Toolcrib on 12/21 to order and was told they have no info on nails for this tool. How can they expect to sell the gun if they cannot supply bullets? They advised me to call Hitachi for a source. Pls advise me why nails are not on the net or in the Toolcrib catalog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super time saver
I am a professional carpenter in California, where extensive use of metal framing connectors is standard practice in both commercial and residential construction. This nailer proved to be worth it's cost purely in time savings. When the cost (to a customer) for a carpenter is roughly $70/hour, time IS money. The nail gun drives one nail only when the nail tip is placed in a hole in a connector, making for accurate framing. The reliability of Hitachi tools is well known, so don't worry about that. The only drawbacks are that it will not fire all nails in the nail strip (jamming reducer), and that it doesn't always drive nails full depth into engineered lumber (heavy beams), although this is more likely a function of the compressor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The super-duty of framing nailers !
While framing houses for 8 years, this Hitachi framing gun has out lasted and out performed every other framing gun on the market. They are the heaviest duty, and strongest framing guns I have came across in all my years of framing. Day in and day out they last and withstand the use and abuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intimidating
This is the Mercedes of framing nailers.Astounding and intimidating power even with the compressor at only 90 PSI.Easy to use load mechanism and depth adjustment. This nailer is very precisely balanced and has a high class feel and finish.Have had no jams after driving thousands of nails. Two annoyances though, a nailer of this price ought to come with a case, also for this price it ought to come with the single trip tip.On occasion it has fired two nails, it did however, countersink both 3.5 inch stainless steel ring shank nails:) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy...
I bought this gun about a year ago. It's great when you are fastening joist hangers on decks, truss ties, floor truss hangers. Man this kicks too. Careful when you use it cause it can shock your wrist. Makes my framing days alot faster when I am build a new home. It's very light and small enough to get into tight spots. I like how safety works on it. And loading is pretty nice too. This gun is worth having if you frame alot houses or build alot decks. Time it saves is worth the cost. Would buy again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of production
The NR90AC2 is great. However if you search the Hitachi website you will find amazon sold me, and is still trying to sell, a product which has been out of production for more than a year:

* 'The new NR90AC3 has all great features of the original NR90AC2. Owing to the modification ofthe ANSI standard-101-2002(Portable, Compressed-Air-Actuated, Fastener Driving Tools- Safety Requirements for), the original NR90AC2 model has gone out of production since the 1st of May 2003. To correspond to this, the valve construction was partially changed and the switching device (Change Knob) was added to select the nailer operation between "singleactuation(single sequential actuation)" and "contact actuation". 5-0 out of 5 stars best framing nailer
I am a carpenter, on Long Island where it has become code to use engineered lumber for almost everything. This is one of the only nailers that can sink anail in it every time. It never jams and hardly ever skips a nail. I have owned many differant nail guns, but this seems to be the best on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bang for Big Bucks
Over the years Hitachi has developed a reputation as being one of the most solid manufacturers of nail guns in the marketplace, with both innovation and reliability being their apparent focus. This has proven itself to be the case with this NR90AC2 framing nailer. It has been as solid as a rock with no feed problems or double shoots so far in its new life in my hands. It's well balanced though somewhat on the heavier side, but this is a good thing as it absorbes nearly all the recoil and is actually less tiring to use on a long day. This is said to be THE most powerful framer made and will easily make a 16d disappear into a microlamb if so desired. Hitachi's are more expensive up front due to their well known quality and reliability and the fact that they're still made in Japan, but once they finally do need parts due to normal wear then you should expect to pay some bucks - perhaps 3X as much than for a like part for a Senco/Mag/P-C et al - but you'll still come out ahead in the averages (think long term with these Hitachi nailers). It's a shame that Hitachi doesn't offer a choice of a bounce or single trigger or combined selective trigger retrofit free of charge as many other manufacturers are doing since the new safety rules on nailguns took effect, Hitachi service centers want $45+ for any changeover. Speaking of safety: Be aware of your surroundings with these things, know what's on the other side of where you're pointing/firing it, don't EVER have another person in the line of fire even as your crew boss has a "macho" (read: stupid) attitude about such things, always wear high quality safety glasses, and remember that 15,000 (!) people are admitted to the emergency room every year due to nail gun accidents according to a blurb on the evening news in September of '03 when that lady made national news after somehow sinking (well countersunk too) a 16d into her skull and living to tell about it. Many people aren't so lucky... But not to scare anybody off, these nailguns (like all tools) are only as safe as you are, and if you tend to have scars and stitches and bandaids all over your hide then I suggest you get yourself a Senco A9 palm nailer instead. For all others, get this NR90AC2 and pat yourself on the back for making an excellent "you get what you pay for" choice! 5 stars! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I just don't see anything would be better than this nailer
By no means that I am qualified as a professional roofer, but I know what I was doing and everyone saw what I did gave high remarks. I did some research before bought this nailer with shingle guide. First of all, ... It fired as fast as I wanted. Sometimes I even got a second nail shot before I notice. But I just don't see how the nailer can't keep up with the demand of any roofer. At least you have to point where you want the next nail to be nailed. I can shoot this nailer three times in a second, but I sure can't point the nailer at the right spot three times in a second. May be a professional roofer can do five times in a second. Well, that's probably why I am not doing this for living. And if that's the difference between paying [$$$] for a roof job instead of [$$$], I won't have any problem to shot nails at one per second speed.
Anyway, the nailer is very easy to handle and light enough that you would not feel tired after extensive use. Although, I may add a couple of things that I wish could be better made. One, the foot should have some kind of replaceable cover that will keep the tar from sticking to it when used in summer during which most of the roofing jobs are done, so the tar from asphalt shingles tend to be soft and sticky. Second, it should have some indicator that shows the nails are almost gone and you need to put in another coil. When the second to last nail is shot, the last nail will just fell off and you will have a "hole" in the shingle before you see the last nail comes out. It should allow you to put in a new coil before finishing the current coil without the dry firing at end. The shingle guide is just a very handy feature to keep your shingles straight. I would recommended it to any do-it-yourselfer, you can't go wrong with this nailer for any roofing project you may have.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant tool
Recently purchased Hitachi NV45 AC for installing Hardiplank fiber-cement siding (blind nailed top edge, 8 1/4" wide).Wanted roofing nailer that was VERY light. This tool is exactly what I wanted. While it doesn't drive the roofing nail flush to siding even when set to max. depth, I prefer this because I can then tap the nail flush with a hammer, avoiding over-driving.Not a single jamb to date. And the weight (or lack thereof) is hard to beat.

3-0 out of 5 stars WHY IT ISNT THE BEST
THIS GUN IS OK.I LIKE THE LIGHT WEIGHT.HOWEVER, THE WEIGHT SACRIFICE COSTS YOU IN CYCLING RATE.THE GUN WOULD BE MUCH BETTER IF IT CYCLED AIR FASTER.THEY SAY THAT IT HAS A RAPID FIRE MODE...BUT ALL GUNS HAVE THIS.EVERY GUN HAS THIS RAPID FIRE FEATURE.JUST HOLD IN THE TRIGGER AND TOUCH THE GUN..ITS BASICALLY JUST BYPASSING THE SAFETY MECHANISM...

THE GUN IS GOOD BUT WHEN TRYING TO GO EXTREMELY FAST IT JUST CANT HANDLE THE RAPID FIRE. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Hitachi's full-head framing nailer is a solid industry staple that hasn't changed a heck of lot for a long time. The main improvement on this latest version is the soft grip, which seems to be made of a wrapped tape similar to what's found on many bicycle handles. It feels comfortable in the hand, and should it wear out, one can always get replacement tape at the local bicycle shop. This is a well-balanced nailer, solidly constructed but not too heavy. The secret behind this nailer's ongoing popularity with professionals is its reliable design--it can be expected to last a long time on job sites without a lot of problems. With 860 inch-pounds of driving force, it is among the most powerful nailers available, and, when paired with an appropriate compressor, it sinks its nails every time. Although this nailer lacks some of the popular features found on more recent designs--such as an adjustable exhaust port and depth of drive--it does have a solid track record that few other tools can match. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sequential trigger
I have the anniversary model (gold rather than green) of this nailer, purchased new. For my purposes, lack of depth control is not an issue. I wanted a sequential trigger to avoid doubling when used by other community-service volunteers who are inexperienced with bouncing the nailer to place one nail at each location. The price for a single-fire trigger has dropped to about $57, but that's still pricey.
Here's the alternative: Most commercial framing crews want a bounce-fire-only trigger in the newer NR83A2's which come with selective actuation triggers. Some owners of the older NR83A would like to have selective actuation (or at least single-shot capability). The triggers are swappable. I now have a NR83A with the NR83A2 trigger. I did not have to purchase another trigger, since it was traded to the other nailer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard
I have to admit I am a home improvement retard and not a professional. But, I have done basically all my work myself with my own tools, with the guidance of friends involved in various trades. That said, starting out framing, I grew tired of borrowing guns so I decided to look into buying one. I asked around and I looked at what framers who work with their tools day in and day out where using. 99% of the ones I came accross where using the NR83A and said if it ever became unusable they would immediately buy another. I borrowed Sencos and Hitachis. I found the Senco a pain in the a** to clear a jam from, other than that a great gun. I have a Senco finish nailer and a stapler, their stuff is excellent too but, the Hitachi couldn't be easier to load, to clear a jam I've never had to do more than pull the spring back that keeps pressure on the nails and give the gun a good shake. 99% of jams are due to nails coming out of their plastic racking. I've used the gun for basic framing, fastening plywood or osb, T1-11 siding, mounting windows, and building wood fences. If your a pro or just a home improvement slave like me, this is the gun that will last and still have a good resale value should you no longer need it.

PS. The gun works so much better without the spring installed. I had a pro carpenter tell me it's an OSHA violation to have it removed. I also have seen guys use these guns to beat beams into place. One so badly, the exhaust tin was pounded completely flat, void of almost all paint and rattling with each shot. This is by no means a tool to be taken lightly, it's possibly one of the most dangerous handheld construction power tools you can use, but it's also one of the most productive and time saving tools you can buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still The Best Framing Gun money can buy.
I wrote a review four years ago on this tool. I am still using the same NR83A, and have not yet had it in for repair. Your friends and neighbors will ask to borrow it. Tell them to get their own. You will not want to give this thing up. As for the Safety Aspects, you should understand that this is a SERIOUS tool. Why do you think they call it a GUN???!!! You wear eye protection and you start out slow and careful. Get the feel of the tool. Learn how it bounces when you skip-fire. Know how to release the trigger in tight spots so that you don't double fire it. It's all about knowing your tool, as if it were an extention of your own body.

If you are a homeowner, I would tell you to stick with the 16 oz. Home Depot special hammer. If you are a professional carpenter and you do any framing, you want no other gun but the NR83A.

(By the way, I take the safety spring out as well, I think it's actually safer to not have it. Just my opinion...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trim Carpenter Test!!!
I bought this gun due to pressure from my employer. The company that I work for has been using this gun for the past two years. I was using a Porter Cable be for the Hitachi and struggled with the weight and shot effect of the Porter Cable. When shooting MDF trim the Porter Cable tore up the finish because the driver is much larger then the head of the nail. The Hitachi has a driver that is of equal size to the nail so the trim looks of very high quality after it is installed. The Hitachi also has a tapered nose that allows the user to place the nail exactly where he or she wants it. The new design on the trigger, witch allows the operator to change the trigger type in less then a second!! No lie. Even with the safety trigger on it still allows the user to shoot one nail weather the nose is pressed first or the trigger, this one feature is what I like the most. I would recommend this gun to any professional who uses the gun every day, the average person might find the Hitachi kind of pricey. ... Read more
