5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Can Ask For
I won't continue with all the well-deserved praise for this lathe since the other reviewers have definitely made the point. What I will say is do your homework to find the best price, then call ToolCrib (Amazon) and use their price-matching guarantee.

I saved about $75 by checking SouthernTool.com first, which also offers free shipping.

ToolCrib delivers to the ground, unlike alot of curbside delivery options where you're expected to get it off of the truck. This is HUGE considering you're dealing with a peice of equipment that weighs in at around 700 lbs.

Did I mention that I love this lathe?Rock solid, quiet, smooth,...oh yeah, I wasn't going to repeat what everyone else says...

    Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations
It is a pleasusre to review the Powermatic 3520A, a tool that truly exceeds all expectations.
The Powermatic is an upgrade for me, intended to replace an antique Rockwell Model 46-111 that suffered having only four speeds and a 5.5 inch swing over bed.The upgrade is dramatic having passed a severe test by successfully turning a fourteen pound green mesquite log that made the Rockwell lathe dance across the shop floor.By comparisson, the Powermatic just stood there running as smooth as a raw egg floating in a bucket of warm oil; not even a ripple.Torque at low speed proved to be most impressive and very useful in my turning projects.Additionally, the adjustments to the headstock, tail stock, spindle and tool rest can all be accomplished with one hand. What a surprise; not even once did these adjustment require the use of a wooden mallet that remained within easy reach of the Rockwell lathe.Manual speed change was also found to be without difficulty and the guard assembly demonstrated to be a welcome addition.
However, a few criticisms were discovered. It is assumed that the finger guide on the tool rest is nothing more than a straight edge; big deal. The digital speed readout leaves a lot to be desired in that it is located on the backside of the headstock and requires a factor of nine on low speed and factor of twenty-four on highspeed to approach the actual rpm.Located directly below the digital "speed" readout are a wonderfully tempting set of buttons; however, the instruction manual states that they should, "..never be pushed at any time".Especially disappointing was the discovery that an indexer must be purchased as an optional accessory.Even the old Rockwell has a locking indexer that could be readily engaged and disengaged with my handy mallet.Powermatic would be advised to incorporate the locking indexer into the handwheel.Furthermore, while making improvements it would be further suggested that the tool support remaing bare metal where the hand tools make contact; just above the finger guide!
Overall, I like the five star rating and consider the Powermatic 3520A to be a real bargain, especially if one considers the cost per pound.

4-0 out of 5 stars You won't be sorry!
I have used the Powermatic 3520a for about 2 years now and am thoroughly pleased with it. Having started started out with a Jet mini lathe, I soon outgrew it and before long, wanted to turn bigger things. A lathe is a big investment and so a lot of thought should be put into it's purchase. As much as I would have wanted a Oneway, I opted on the Powermatic because of price and functionality. This lathe is a beauty to operate - though I'm not fond of the color - hey, a girl likes some color! Kidding aside - I love the Powermatic. It is smooth and has plenty of power, easily handling the Kel McNaughton bowl coring/saver system. If you get a chance - demo one before you buy - and get a feel for what suits you, after that, it's just a matter of matching the feel - to the pocketbook! Oh, & by the way - I 'had' to give it 4 stars simply because it lacks indexing capabilities. You can buy an indexing attachment or make one yourself. Good luck and let the shavings fly - thedebs.com ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The last US built Powermatic - soon to be discontinued...
As most US Craftsmen have noticed, nearly all woodworking manufactureres are off-shoring the manufacture of their machines.Powermatic (JET) is no exception; their PM 66 series tablesaw, their shapers, and a couple drill presses are all that remain of American made machinery.I picked up the 5HP saw with the Router Lift table and am very pleased with it.It won't be long before all of Powermatic will be made in Taiwan, so if you want an American made saw, you better act now.Your next best choice is General (not General International), which is made in Canada.General carries two lines one made in Canada and their General International which is the same Taiwan crap you find at Jet.Happy shopping. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SAW .... JUST DO NOT BUY ITFROM AMAZON
The saw is great.Just do not buy this from AMAZON!!!!I have waited for over six weeks for my saw and finally gave up(I was told in the sixth week of waiting that it wasw being shipped to AMAZON from the manufacture in 3-5 weeks and AMAZON was going to take another 3-5 weeks on top of that to get me my saw for a grand total of 5 moths!) So, I went to southern tools and they shipped the saw that day. I had my saw within three days (not weeks or months like AMAZON!!!)
I received the saw in seven boxes but it was very easy to set up! The boxes they used for the saw was reinforced with 2x4's.They even test the saw before it leaves the factory (give you a readout of the test results, which is great to use as a reference.)I got the mobile base and set up the saw in the base. The table saw was square right out of the box.Just follow the directions and you will have a great saw that will last for years!
Thank You Southern Tool for my table saw!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent saw - worth every penny
I am happy with it every time I use it.It performs the way a table/cabinet saw should - it cuts everything perfectly, every time.It makes glue ready joints every time and I don't even use a fancy forrest blade.I use a decent 60 tooth Freud and I'm happy. It is amazing. The excalibure table is useful, though massive. It isn't the answer to all problems, but with some effort, you can make accurate & precise cuts on full sheets of plywood.I recommend an outfeed table in addition to all this saw has.It makes the sliding table more stable, and improves cuts. The 5 HP motor is great. It doesn't slow down under a load - ever, no matter what. You can rip through solid maple like it was balsa wood. The much touted cast iron top and trunion deserve the praise they receive. This saw is as solid as a tank. You could easily use it for 50 years and still be happy with the cuts!

    Buy it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big And Powerful
This is one big heavy saw. It took me three to four hours to set it up after watching the video on the sliding table, the table saw is machined perfect and is very powerful, the five horsepower motor will run though any hardwood you can cut. I have installed a Forrest Blade on it. With the sliding table I can cross cut a full sheet of plywood by myself.I build a lot of cabinets and I need a saw that will stay where you put it, this one will not move with a sheet of 3/4" plywood on it. The rip fence is strong and accurate. You want be disappointed with this saw, it is by far this best table saw on the market today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Investment
This saw replaced a Delta 10" Cabnit Saw - which was a very good saw.

The Powermatic 5HP is one big saw. It will cut anything wood without burning. No matter how slow or fast I feed wood into it the powerful 5HP saw there are no problems.Plywood in sheets can be feed with ease. The cuts are straight the first time and require no secondary working. I have not had one poor plywood cut on this machine. This is the best ripping saw I have ever used.Again the cuts are true and I have not wasted any wood since the purchase of this unit. Wonderful work products can be produced with ease.

The sliding table was set up after viewing a video tape.Using the tips in the video I set up the sliding table - leveled and set it even with the blade in 3 hours.A recent review I read on sliding tables said it took six hours - anyone could do it alone in three following the video. If you have someone to help you - 2 to 2.5 hours. This is not a mobil unit - save your money - do not buy a mobil base. The sliding table must stay stationary to stay properly set.

The rail and fence fit the saw table and sliding table without the need for any cutting. The fence once aligned matains square. It adjusts with little effort. Repeat cuts are exact duplicates of one another. This is as good of fence as I have used and recommend it highly. There is no need of an upgrade here.

With the cast iron extention to the right of the blade and the wood extention table you have an unbeatable work service. Your work is fully supported. You can control cuts with little effort. You will be able to work plywood sheets all day long with this saw, it's sliding table to the left, and the 50 inch extention to the right.

The fit and finish are excellent. Everything went together with ease. The instructions were clear.I put on a Forrest blade and it was in perfect alignment without the need of adjustment - none!I could not believe that it was set right out of the box. The table was level and ground properly - my straight edge was dead flat over every surface of the table. The extension cast iron wing may be a bit off to the left outside but not that it effects cuts or quality of work.It is so close I just can not tell for sure.

This saw will not make better end results BUT it will allow you to work with confidence, building your skills. It is a high compacity workhorse. It will be the last cabnit saw I will buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful but particular
The machine is absolutely heavy duty.Although, there are a few things that I have found issue with:

    1) machine doesn't work well with wide poplar boards.I have a heavy duty dust collection system connected to it but the poplar creates long strands from the wide boards. These strands clog up the exhaust chute causing the shavings to back up onto the outfeed roller and stop the boards from continuing through the planer part way through a feed.Basically have to lower the table and pull the board out to clean the strands out. This binding of the strands has tore up the outfeed urethance rollers to the point of no return.***update:I was able to take the rollers off the machine and turn the urethane down on an engine lathe to straighten the urethane after much use.(note:high rpm, low feed rate and a touch with sand paper when finished) Works better than new now.I should be able to do this a few times before having to buy new ones.By the way, the new rollers are pretty cheap to replace.***

2)Wish the table length was longer or adaptable to adding an extension.Would be nice.

The machine is very easy to work with and work on.The molding feature is great and works well.I've done all the trim in my new house with this machine.Hope to have a long future with it in my business.

4-0 out of 5 stars You little Birch!!!
About eight months ago I purchased the powermatic PM-15 from a local tool supply store. I have loved using this fine machine for planing and moulding, and it has preformed flawlessly, that is until I got my first paying customer. A gentleman that lives near me brought me a load of roughsawn birch to plane down and run 50' of crown and 50' of panel moulding for him. While most of it (80 percent) came out nice, most of the pieces had some tearout, and 1 piece of crown was completly trashed. What a nightmare! I was suprised at this because I've run poplar, red oak, and pine through this machine with very little tearout (mainly around knots and hard areas). I can't fault the machine, I suppose, but I wrote this to warn any future millwrightsabout working birch.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Machine For the Money
When this planer arrived at my shop I couldn't wait to get it out of the crate and plugged in.I was pleasantly surprised to see how heavy the machine was built, its beefy stature screamed, throw anything at me I can plane it, and after some adjusting it did.I ran pine and white oak threw it, and it produced a wonderful finish on both. The one problem I have had is trying to plane exceptionally wide boards. For some reason if I plane a board 10" wide or better it machine has some trouble feeding the board threw.I found that with some adjustment of the spring tension on the urethane infeed and outfeed rollers this can be reduced but not completely eliminated.Other than this the machine runs great. It is easy and safe to operate, and fun to use. This planer is another fine example of Powermatic's expertise in building heavy-duty home shop machinery. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unstable and Overpriced
I bought one with my PM66, and I don't much care for the design and the price.Although it's well made, the three-wheel set-up is unstable, and the saw will tilt with a fairly light touch. The swiveling wheel does nothave a swivel lock, so even when everything is locked down, the saw willstill shift unexpectedly. I drilled and tapped holes for heavy eye-bolts inthe corners opposite the fixed wheels. The eye-bolts form outriggers thatsteady the saw and compensate for any uneveness in the floor. This issomething that the maker should have provided. I'd recommend instead theGrizzly Shop-Fox mobile base which has four wheels and outriggers and costsless. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powermatic 14" Bandsaw
This is a solid, well built machine. The saw has a larger resaw capacity (9") than other similar sized saws on the market. However, the one-piece construction does not allow for the addition of a riser blockwhich can be used to increase the resaw capacity of competitor's saws to14". Two drawbacks to the saw are 1) it requires an unusual bladesize (102"), which means the blade must usually be special ordered orspecially made. This is not a big deal, but is inconvenient. 2) The bladeguides are difficult to adjust, which can lead to severe frustration.Otherwise, this is a very good saw. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jet?
I was quite surprised when I received the machine. It appears to be a Jet painted yellow. It is not at all like the older Powermatic machines I have used. The spindle was not centered in the table top hole. The machine made a clank noise when I started it. It turned out that the pulley on the spindle was loose. I do not like the way the belt adjusts to change the spindle speed. The machine is quiet and continued to run quiet since fixing the pulley and cenering the spindle in the hole.

The top is highly polished and has stayed polished. The metal parts of the fence seemed to work good. The infeed and outfeed wooden parts of the fence were not flat nor true in line with each other. I changed the wood and flattened them so they are flat and in line with each other.

This machine does not uphold the Powermatic name of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted: solid, dependable and versatile
Solid, dependable, versatile. That's what I was looking for in a shaper. This machine is solid.Once it is set up to run a job, it takes care ofitself.Everything locks down solidly and it runs with very littlevibration.I like the versatility of interchangeable shafts, including theability to use router bits in the 1/2" collet adapter. The reversingfeature allows me to do climb cuts on difficult woods and to use someshaper cutters "upside down" to increase their usefulness.I didadd a power feed unit shortly after buying the shaper. It makes the climbcuts possible, and it makes all operations safer.I have the shaper on anHTC mobile base to allow positioning the machine to handle extra-long stockin my small shop.

I have not discovered anything negative about thistool. It did require a little touch-up work when first received. It onlyamounted to what seems to be the usual cleaning up of a sharp edge here andthere.Otherwise the workmanship is excellent. And I love the mirrorfinish on the cast iron top, which still shines after a year of use. ... Read more

    18. Powermatic 1791215 14" Band Saw with Stand

    Editorial Review

Powermatic's 14-inch band saw features a one-piece frame and tube steel construction, and it has a 9-inch cutting capacity, which is larger than most other band saws in this price range. Because of an improved trunnion system, the 14-by-14-inch solid cast-iron table is easily adjustable to 45 degrees right and 15 degrees left with the turn of a knob. The table adjustment guide, however, is a decal that you affix, which may not provide the kind of exact accuracy you're looking for. The quick-grab knobs open the blade doors easily (and they stay open). Blades are pretty easy to change, and there's a blade-tracking adjustment on top of the cabinet. The single horsepower motor delivers plenty of power for most applications, but this is a no-frills, general-purpose saw that obviously wasn't designed for constant, heavy resawing. The wheels are made of cast aluminum, ground for balance, and feature replaceable tires that give you vibration-free operation. This saw is also considerably less expensive than much of its competition--an undeniable plus. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In My Wood Shop I Take Pride!
    Very easy assembly,,,, childs play!
The solid frame/legs were easy to mount on a set of wheels, smooth tilt table,
Very easy to adjustment of the guide bearings
Great saw for the money (I picked mine up at the Wood Workers Show sold by Jet, the new Powermatic owners). I like the option to cut a 9" thick piece, unlike the typical 6" thick on other 14" Band Saws. First time to own a Powermatic tool, I do like this tool, although not high end "STARRETT" quality. A nice addition to my shop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works fine with new motor
I mounted a new two-horsepower motor on mine, and now it works great.I don't why the manufacturers of 14" bandsaws can't supply motors with adequate power especially since it wouldn't cost them that much more. The rest of my previous review is still valid though.I never did buy a Laguna because I don't have the money for new machine. If I'd known better, I wouldn't have bought a saw with a motor of less than three horsepower.

3-0 out of 5 stars a need for carbide
i love the ease of replacing these blades. i plane alot of old barn wood and have to replace these blades often. when i was getting these blades for 22 bucks a set, i didn't mind them wearing out so fast on the hard woods. now that the price has jumped to 30 bucks a set i am wondering if going to a carbide blade would be more economical in the long run? are you or do you offer such a blade? ...
