    Editorial Review

A 4-cycle, 26cc variable speed engine powers this dynamo around your borders, trees, and against foundations. Ryobi’s eliminated the need to mix messy oil and gas with this unit, which runs on straight gas, saving you time and trouble. It’s fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly and runs quieter than its 2-stroke competition. Easy starts are assured, too, because of a primer bulb. The bump feed advances more line whenever you need it, and the SpeedSpool Line Replacement lets you put in a new line without taking the head apart--a great idea. In hand, it’s well-balanced, relatively light, and very comfortable, thanks to the D-shaped handle and its ergonomic soft grip. If it were only a trimmer, it would be a great purchase, but add to it the capability to attach a range of different heads, and you’ve got a highly versatile, multi-purpose yard tool. The Trimmer Plus attachments (sold separately) turn the trimmer into an edger, hedge trimmer, tree pruner, leaf blower/vac, garden cultivator, and snow thrower. The attachments connect in a second with a solid "click," and you’re off on a new task. It’s an ingenious system that will bring professional-type lawn tools to the average homeowner. Bravo, Ryobi!--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, but ONE BIG PROBLEM
I've had the trimmer, the tiller, edging and tree attachments for about 2 summers now. Overall, for the money, it is a good trimmer. The edger works decently, although I've only used it once. I use the tree trimmer each fall. I have used the tiller quite a bit as I have to prep one 70 sq. ft. veggie garden and about 200 sq. ft. of flower beds each year. I use it to trim every week or more, after each mowing of a 1/2 acre lawn.

The trimmer itself is good and runs nicely, its great not to have to mix gas and my wife likes it as its not as smoky and noisy. However, she wont use it because it is pretty heavy. I highly recommend getting a strap, and if I were to do this all over again, I'd get a straight shaft trimmer.

Now for the problem. My very first time out with the tiller, the cable inside became stuck in the shaft and I couldn't get the tiller attachment off until I resorted to 2 sets of vise grips and more than a little force. Turns out the cable from the attachments is just a spring type cable with a square end. this fits into a pot metal type coupler that is on the end of another spring wound cable from the motor. This is all at the break, roughly halfway on the shaft. What happened is that due to the torque of the tiller, the cable end "oblonged" instead of staying square inside the coupler. This bound the cable inside the coupler and they had to be forceably separated.

After this episode, the cable and the coupler never fit properly and every time I put the tiller or edger on, it had to be forced apart. This has also stretched the cable a little and fitting together is a dicey chore. I ended up having to buy ANOTHER trimmer and I just leave one in the tiller now. The other I use as a trimmer and with the lighter attachments. I only did this because I had the significant investment in the attachments and getting another trimmer was less expensive than getting rid of this and starting over. But I sure thought about it.

So you can see, WHAT'S THE SENSE of having these when I could/should have just bought separate units to begin with. I'd be very interested to find out if other owners have had the same trouble. Oh, by the way in case you are wondering, I carefully turned over the soil by shovel in all of these beds and never used the tiller for "fresh ground" tilling. I'm smarter than that and I borrow my brothers Troy-Built when I need to go to town from scratch. This tiller is only used to freshen a spring bed and mix in additives, and then only after a shovel turnover.

All in all, I'm pretty disappointed. I had a Ryobu saw years ago that I wasn't impressed with either. I get the sense that Ryobi doesn't spend much on engineering and quality, as in they skimp a bit on the level. I'd give this one star, but the trimmer is decent, the tiller works well now that its permanent, and the other attachments do the job. The idea was great, the execution needs a rethink, especially in coupler design.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrived Broken
Can you beleive it? I ordered this thinking it would be a great addition to my outdoor assault weapons which I use to keep my yard from taking over the house. Things grow fast in the my gulch.

Well, I take it out of the big Amazon box. It's already busted! The lid for the air intake snaps onto the intake itself. So I figure, "OK, I guess I gotta call up Amazon." Well, this thing runs on gas, so I can't return it to Amazon. Instead they want
me to contact Ryobi. Well, that is turning out to be impossible.

The phone number given by the Ryobi site for their outdoor products doesn't get picked up. Instead, a recording tells you
thatdue to high volume, your call won't be answered. Have a nice day!

So I got it in the backside, for the first time, from good old Amazon. Thanks, Amazon. 'preciate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware Trimmer ships with no oil in crankcase
This item ships with no oil in the crankcase. Their is a yellow tag on the gas tank to fill with gas only and add no oil. and then a statement to add oil to engine.
Their should be a RED tag telling you to add oil first before trying to start.
Some people may not know the diference between a 2 and 4 cycle engine.

Ryobi should have done a better job.
When I checked the oil dipstick I was supprised their was no oil. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Spool is great - but cheaper to reload the one you have
The design of the spool is terrific but it's so easy to refill the spool you're really better off buying some trimmer line in bulk at Home Depot and refilling it yourself.

I could see getting a second one to keep a reloaded one handy on standby, but really, it's no trouble to refill the spool yourself and much cheaper than buying replacements. Can't say enough about the product, it's terrific. I love my Ryobi, I have a gas and an electric one (got tired of dragging the cord around but the electric one still works great). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A design disaster compared to the older model.
Compared to the older RESV1300 model, you wonder if they tested this new model with real humans, because it is a ergonomic disaster. The new model positions the bag to the rear so you have to sling the bag over your shoulder or around your neck, which becomes very cumbersome as the bag gets heavier with mulch and you start to move around. And your pants are ready for the washer cause the bag rubs against your leg. (The bag on the old model was slung under the tube.)Also with the new model you have to stop when you want to change from vacuum to blower, and change tubes, and carry a screwdriver to do it. (The old model had a lever that switch functions instantaneously.)I wish I had my old model back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for this physically limited user!
I agree with all the positive points the other reviewers had touched on.I just want to add that I have fibromyalgia, and have a problem with muscle fatigue and spasms when I do physical activity, especially in my back. This unit is lightweight, and when the bag is slung across your shoulder correctly, it doesn't feel that heavy, even when the bag is full.I had more problems dealing with the slope and tree branches than I did with the unit itself. The only way I would improve it would be with an optional extension for the tube, so taller people could use it without having to bend over to get the intake tube close enough to the leave when vacuuming. (I'm 5'8")

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Blower
For the money this blower probably cannot be beat.I had bought a Black & Decker blower/vacumn at Home Depot and returned it.It was so loud it made my ears hurt.No such problem with this blower. While it's not quiet, it was not annoyingly loud like the B&D blower or blowers I've heard my neighbors using.

It does take a few minutes to convert from blower to vacumn but it's not like I'm going to use it every day or even every week. The vacumn/mulcher did a great job with a pile of leaves I had and also was terrific for getting debris out from hard to get to places (small areas adjacent to my house and the steps going down to my basement door).I like the two speeds, as well.

The only potential downside could be that the opening at the end of the blower is a little smaller than others I've seen. This means that it may take longer to get what you set out to do done.If you have a very large yard with many trees, that may be something you want to consider. It should work fine for the size yard and trees I have (and the number of trees adjacent to my property). We'll know for sure come Fall.So far, I'm very glad I bought it. ... This ingenious add-on turns your Trimmer Plus into a blower, or, with just a few simple adjustments, into a vacuum. Its 120 mph airflow and Quick Link connection will have your lawn clean in a matter of minutes, versus a couple of hours with a rake in hand. The balance when connected is excellent; the huge, rugged tube devours leaves and debris in a flash. The bag holds an impressive amount of mulched material and even empties easily. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to manuver
too bulky.blower strength depends on the trimmer motor. If motor loses it's power, then there goes your blower too.

4-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't do without it!
I bought a Yardman weed wacker which is compatable with the Ryobi stuff. When I saw the Vac/Blower attachment, I thought that it was too good to be true.It has been an incredible attachment. It has cut my "landscaping" time in half and everything looks so much better. This thing even sucks up oranges that have fallen off of my tree.I don't know if that is good for it or not but it just keeps working. The blower is more than adequate and does all that I need.So far I have been very pleased with this item.I would recommend it highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont be afraid to get it dirty....
Yes, it's made of plastic but so far the abuse I've subjected it to makes me wonder if it's lined with Kryptonite. I recently trimmed my boxwoods and Red Tip bushes/shrubs and after spending 30 minutes raking and picking up debris by hand, I said I wish I had a lawn vac to suck all this stuff up. Hey, I DO have a lawn vac! So....branches, leaves, twigs, etc got sucked up and placed nicely in the bag. A little grunting from the impeller blade but most of it came up aside from a few stubbon leaves. I havent tried the blower part yet but i can only imagine it works as well. ... Read more

Here’s the ultimate in convenience and versatility. The TrimmerPlus series accepts different tool heads to become a variety of outdoor power tools: an edger, cultivator, tree pruner, hedge trimmer, blower, vac, even a snow thrower. To this unit Ryobi’s added the ease of electric power: you get a great tool with hassle-free starts, light weight, no fuel needs, no emissions, and less noise. The straight shaft on this model affords super easy trimming under low branches and shrub growth with great balance and control. When it’s time for the next chore, just detach the EZ-Link tool head and snap on another, and you’re off. The trimmer itself is a great workhorse, with a bump-feed mechanism and speed-spool replacement.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PerformancePlus
Having used gas trimmers before I was interested in a change. An electric trimmer, this time, less noise and gas fumes. So I ordered the Ryobi TrimmerPlus 137r. I thought the quick link attachments were a good idea, if they worked.
After ordering the TrimmerPlus and before I received it, I was concerned that I had just ordered a glorified cake mixer. I began to have my doubts about the performance I could expect from an electric trimmer.
Amazon and Tool Crib delivered the Trimmer (before the estimated delivery date) and as soon as I saw the heft in this Trimmer my doubts started to subside. I took it out into my huge backyard and garden. Whatever doubts I had about this electric Trimmer's performance evaporated. Not only does it perform identical to a gas unit but in many ways it's cleaner, quieter and a whole lot healthier. I had no problems dragging an extension cord around with the Ryobi Trimmer. The bump feature to extend out more string works easily and flawlessly. Trimming under plants not a problem with the straight shaft design.
Now to slip on the Cultivator attachment and chew up that garden. What a great maintenance tool. I am very satisfied. Definitely a superior product.

1-0 out of 5 stars beware
the trimmer works fine, but the bearings went out prematurely. replacement was not available. so all they could recomend is to buy a new trimmer head, as in the snap on accessories like the blower, hedge trimmer, cultivator. the cost cost of any of these is ridiculous. so you might as well throw it away and buy a new trimmer.such a waste, motor is fine .

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, but loud
I've had this unit for several years now, and it has performed flawlessly. It's quite powerful, much more so than you might expect from an electric. It tears through the toughest stuff my property has to offer. If this won't go through it, I know it's time for the Husky chainsaw. The motor is at the top of the handle, as with gas powered models, which helps with the balance.

The variety of attachments available are a nice plus. I've got the edger and just ordered the blower/vac.

I have only 2 complaints about it. The first is that the unit's overall length isn't adjustable; I'm 5' 9" and I find the unit a little too long to allow the head to lay flat - it tilts slightly up in front. This isn't a major problem however. Perhaps this isn't an issue with the 132r, which is the curved-shaft version, but I've heard that staight shafts are more reliable. Second, this is a fairly loud machine. I don't know if it's as loud as a gas-powered model, but it is louder than I expected (and hoped for). It's not the motor that makes so much noise, it's the head and, to a lesser extent, the shaft mechanism. I sometimes wear ear protection if I'm going to be trimming for a long time; the rather high-pitched drone of the trimmer's head can get to you after a while.

Bottom line: if you don't mind dragging an extenstion cord around (get a good one, or you may cut right through it with the trimmer), this is an excellent alternative to a gas model. ... Read more

As a trimmer, Ryobi's TrimmerPlus is quiet, efficient and easy to start. But that’s just the beginning: The EZ-Link attachments turn this trimmer into a variety of other tools, all part of Ryobi’s TrimmerPlus series. The .080 line cuts a 16-inch swath, and the straight shaft gives you great reach for cutting under shrubs and low foliage. It’s a 4-cycle 26cc engine, so it’s fueled by straight gasoline, and best of all, this is one of Ryobi’s TrimmerPlus models, expanding the trimmer into a shed full of other tools by attaching different tool heads to the clever EZ-Link trimmer shaft. Ryobi makes attachments that turn this trimmer into an edger, cultivator, hedge trimmer, blower/vac and even a snowthrower. We particularly like this model because of its J-shaped handle that adjusts easily for right- or left-handed use and the comfortable foam grip that encases it. Ryobi’s clever SpeedSpool line replacement takes the hassle out of that job, too. Great power, great versatility.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Works well, but has a few design flaws
I bought this trimmer because of the 4-cycle engine, as I was tired of mixing gas and oil on my old 2-stroke unit. The good news is that it has more torque than a typical 2 cycle trimmer. The bad news is that it is no easier to start, nor is it any quieter. You will need hearing protection, and you will need to learn the starting drill.

When the trimmer is run at full throttle for a significant period of time, the muffler gets so hot it tends to burn your right hand.My particular unit died after about a year, so (being the curious type) I took it apart to find out why.I discovered that the spark plug wire had been damaged by vibrating against a metal tab inside the plastic housing.A few layers of electrical tape fixed the problem, but this is a design issue that should have been eliminated at the factory.

The carb is finicky, and needs to be adjusted frequently for best operation. There are no clamps on any of the fuel lines, so as they age, they tend to allow gas leaks. All in all, I wish they had spent a little more money on a better design. It is probably worth pointing out that the 4-cycle Ryobi competes with the Honda 4-stroke trimmer, but the Honda costs $400 and does not offer snap-on attachments.Viewed in that light, the Ryobi may be a relative bargain.Just be aware of its shortcomings, as I've pointed out.Ryobi offers a "professional" quality unit, the 1079r, which might offer a better cost/performance tradeoff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ryobi 825R: the promise, the delivery
There us no question the engine is a dandy. It starts easily and runs fine. The problems I have had seem to emanate from those living in apartments who design lawn equipment.

While, the engine runs great, the muffler was placed on the top with only a thin plastic cover. It gets scorching hot--hot enought to burn through a velour shirt and hot enough to cause painful burns on the back of one's arm. This may not be a problem for one using it only to trim grass at the edge of a walk but if you have challenges such as a ditch to trim, the burn hazard is formidable.

This is such a bad problem I wrote asking if a retrofit kit was available. It took two letters and 3 months to get a "no."

Another problem has been the so-called quick-fit attachments. These snaps dispapeared almost immediately and I had to resort to gear clamps to keep it together.

While it is great to consider it for multi-tool use, I bought the cultivator attachment with mixed results. If you are using it in soft sand, it will perform well but for even a small garden with heavy soil it cannot be recommended.

Shortly after using the cultivator, I had to buy a new head because the bevel gears stripped. I don't believe the engineering is good enough to use it for anything but trimming.

If you want a smooth running trimmer with a mean burn hazard that runs on straight gasoline, this is the one for you. If you have any sense, you will look further.

4-0 out of 5 stars This thing is GREAT!(what are they all griping about?)
It starts easy. Period.I give it 4-5 pumps on the primer bulb, set it on full choke, and it starts on the first pull nearly every time.It has to idle for 10-15 seconds before I can give it full throttle, but then it's off to the races.Way less vibration than the 2-cycles I've owned. Also, the 4-cycle exhaust note is lower and much less irritating.More torque than the 2-strokes too, so I can trim on low throttle much of the time - with much less noise than the 2-strokes.I just haven't got a lot of bad to say.The only complaint is that it leaks oil from the main seal, and I have to wipe it off before I start each use so I don't get oily.Other than that, it's GREAT! ... Editorial Review

Ryobi’s got a great idea here. They’ve created a line of interchangeable tool heads that use the same shaft, powered by a gas engine. This attachment-capable Ryobi trimmer sports the EZ-Link connector, which will let you change out the lower portion of the shaft to turn your tool into an edger, cultivator, blower, or hedge trimmer, in just seconds. The shaft slides into the connector with a solid click--no tools required. While Ryobi offers the same trimmer on a straight shaft, we particularly like this curved lower shaft --and your back likely will, too. The bump-release mechanism feeds more string whenever you need it, and unlike trimmers of the past, the SpeedSpool replacement system makes changing spools a breeze. We’re pretty taken with the J-handle and the way it balances the tool in hand. Ryobi also makes a 4-cycle engine for professional landscapers, but this 2-cycle is plenty for the homeowner.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeeeet!
Have had this trimmer for 3 years...bought it to tackle our new larger yard that had been neglected by the previous owner - over grown to say the least!..the Ryobi is AWESOME! have never once had trouble starting this thing..and I don't do squat for carb maintenance...just put clean properly mixed gas in it and go..and this thing gets used - my neighbors can attest to that as it is quite loud...purchased the tree trimmer attachment as well..another thing of beauty...just keep an eye on the screw that holds the blade on and make sure it stays tight..luv it and am here buying one for my step father for X-mas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!!!!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This trimmer is great!I can use different attatchments and everything!!!It has been reliable and an overall good trimmer. It has just the right power needed!!!!!

I have had mine for 2 or 3 years now and it works just as good as when I first bought it.At first you need to run it some, to break in the engine, but then it works great!!!!I have two of them and I'm thinking of buying a third!!!!!!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Must be industrial sabotage...
No reputable company could possibly have offered a product of such inferior quality and intended to live by its reputation! On the second use, the plastic/aluminum clasp came apart and could not be fixed. The strap itself with its plastic adjustment is certainly worth far less than the $10.00 that I paid. It definitely should be padded, and I did not find it particularly effective in holding the trimmer at an appropriate angle. Wish I had read the other reviews before making my purchase!

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't imagine paying for this...
Well, mine was included with my 875. The clasp bent open the first time I picked it up. After dealing with that for a while, I just tied it on. So let's just say you'll probably want a shoulder strap, but use any old thing you've got lying around before paying real money for this. It must be embarrassing working for Ryobi.

1-0 out of 5 stars Harness snap didn't last 10 minutes.
As soon as I tightened the strap so it would support the weight of the trimmer, the swivel popped out of the housing. I reinserted it twice, but it immediately popped out. I want my money back! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Premeasured Speed Spool Line.
These prepackeged lengths of line are great for easy installation. Installing line on the Speed Spool is the easiest thing to do and it hardly gets jamed. However, I gave it a 3 for poor line durability. This type of line demenishes rather quickly due to it's thinness. If you want more durable line, I would get the .095 line thickness. (orange colored line) It lasts longer and is a lot more durable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Are you too busy to measure?
If you really don't want to bother measuring replacement line before you refill your Ryobi line trimmer, this item is for you. It includes two sets of refills that will get you back to work in5 minutes. But if you had an extra 5 minutes to measure outten feet of line off of a bulk spool of trimmer line, you could save a lot of $$$. I won't buy it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well w/ Ryobi 132R
I have used the speedspool refill with the Ryobi 132R Electric GrassTrimmerPlus. These refills are extremely easy to install. Only problem I'vehad is with the 132R itself in that it does not always dispense line eventhough you bump the head on solid ground. Regardless, I am satisfied w/these refills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!
I purchased one 4.5 years ago when it was called the "Turbo Blower." It has been great, but the Flare nozzle needs to be replaced due to HEAVILY ground scraping. You can get up to 145 mph wind speed! I can be at the begining of the driveway and the leaves blow all the way to the end! You will be very pleased with the preformance of the "Turbo Blower."

5-0 out of 5 stars Ryobi Turbo Blower
I have had a Ryobi Turbo Blower for over 4 1/2 years now and it is still working great! It has survived a move from FL to TX. However the nozzles and bottom are wearing down due to HEAYILY ground scraping... I have loved having this blower much more than an electric one I had because there is no specific speed setting with an electric. With electric it is ON or OFF. No in between.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, marginally efficient
My favorite quality of the blower is that is the lightest TrimmerPlus Add-on that I own. This isn't a substitute for a dedicated leaf blower, and the accessory nozzles work loose after a few minutes. But it's fun to watch them blow away!It works fine on sidewalks and curbs, and I've used it for drying the car. But towels are lighter.... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't get too close to hard objects
Brand new, the trimmer spool didn't release cord, so I decided to use it for a few minutes with the cord that was left before going inside to study the instructions. Bad idea. I got too close to some concrete steps and accidentally let the spool contact them. With a tool this powerful, watch out! The spool and casing exploded into shrapnel. The spool is a spare part, but the housing is not. You have to send it back for service. My previous trimmer was a cheap Black and Decker, and I never had problems with the line feed and it seemed rather indestructible. It seems like a very powerful tool, possibly too powerful for its own good. The housing of the spool should be metal, and the drive shaft looks like it could be stripped easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Trimmer
I am a single woman who wants NO problems with lawn equipment simply beacause I can't work on them.I was at a local hardware store and found this Ryobi 132r TrimmerPlus on the clearance table.(...)I haven't weedeated all spring or summer and it cut right thru all the tall weeds and grass like butter!I didn't have the owners manuel but was able to find it right here on this site, my next purchase will be the blower for it!Buy this trimmer, you won't be sorry!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok but it stinks if the lines jam
I agree with everyone's assessment that this trimmer is light , easy to load and can cut through moderately thick grass. However, I have had one problem with it.If the line gets jammed or if you don't bump it to release more line fast enough, you have to unscrew the head to reload it... try feeding two lines back into the head when you are hot, sweaty and tired!I don't know if Ryobi offers an accessory that solves this problem. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I own one and I use it regularly.
This product is a winner in my book. I own a lake front lot that I am clearing for the first time. The Brushcutter Kit and some other tools have made the job of clearing this 200ft by 20 ft lake front part of my lot much easier. I am in Florida and the natural vines that grow here are just too much for the average string trimmer. The Brushcutter cuts them with little effort.
I am allso using the Trimmer Plus tree trimmer on this clearing job,and man oh man what a tool! I have been able to trim off all of the low branches of the overgrown trees on my lot, and even fall some small trees. The disigner of these attachments has my compliments, and thanks, for making tools that have made my work easier.

1-0 out of 5 stars battery is an expensive problem
I bought the 155vp version of this a year ago for use on a yard that is less than 1/3 of an acre. It worked well initially and was able to complete my yard on one charge.

This season (the trimmer's second), the battery is not keeping up as well. If my yard has gone more than a week and a half or so, it can not complete my yard on a single charge.

"No problem" you say, "you can swap the battery". Yep, that's what I thought too when I bought it. However, Amazon (or anyone else as far as I can tell) no longer carries the battery or external charger. When I bought it, they did, and for a reasonable price. I figured I would get it a couple of years later, when the battery started to wear down. No such luck though. It started wearing down after only a year and the battery is not on Amazon any more.

You can call Ryobi's parts vendor to get the battery and charger, but they are now 75 dollars. Add that into the price of this trimmer if you are planning on getting one. And buy the battery now, before the price goes up again.

2-0 out of 5 stars same with me - 2 years
Got exactly two seasons out of my 150R. Battery didn't keep the charge after the second winter.I even totally drained it last fall before leaving it in its charger all winter.Reminds me of an inkjet printer - decent price, until the consumables kill ya.

    Editorial Review

This 31cc engine on the Ryobi 2-cycle string trimmer means business. And the straight shaft means no bending to trim under low growth. And the TrimmerPlus feature means it’s not just a trimmer, it’s a shed full of tools. Interchangeable tool heads convert this workhorse into a hedge trimmer, edger, cultivator, blower, or snow thrower in virtually no time because of Ryobi’s cleverly engineered EZ-Link connection. The EZ-Start System is easy on your back; just prime, flip, and pull for an easy start, every time. We like the SpeedSpool line system on this model because you have two line replacement options. Rewind new line onto the old spool or just pop in a new, pre-wound SpeedSpool. A generous 17-inch cutting swath will get you out of your work clothes and into the hammock in record time.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best trimmer I have owned
This trimmer has plenty of power, and is comfortable to operate. I have not had any problems out of it in four years of use. It still starts very easy, and I have really used it every year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works GREAT!
I've owned one of these units for a couple of years and I'm VERY happy with it.The ability to use different tools is great. I have the normal string trimmer attachment that comes with the unit and the Lawn Edger attachment as well. I plan on getting the cultivator attachment next.

A lot of people have trouble with two-cycle engines. They're a bit difficult to get used to, but once you figure them out, they're very reliable and easy to deal with.

The biggest thing to remember is that you have to use pre-mix gas (32:1 gas to good quality synthentic 2-cycle oil) and you must shake the string trimmer a bit before using if it's been unused for a while. You must also shake the gas can after mixing and before using if it's set for a while.

Make sure you press the priming bulb about 6 times when first starting it (but don't keep pressing it if it doesn't start, you'll just flood the engine).

turn on full choke, hold the throttle full open and pull a couple of times until it fires and quits.

roll off to half choke, keeping the throttle full open, then pull until it starts.

Keep the throttle full open, let it run about 10 seconds and slowly roll the choke to full open.

    You're up and running!!!

BTW: Make sure you wear hearing protection. ALL gas-powered equipment is LOUD!! I recommend ear plugs (at least 25 db of attenuation). I use heavy-duty ear muffs with my iPod earphones underneath so I can listen to music while I work.

1-0 out of 5 stars three engines did not work
I thought that I was the only one having a problem with a Ryobi string trimmer.I am returning the 3rd one in 4 days.#1 seized.#2 would not start after 1/2 tank of gas.#3 will not start even though the gas is fresh and oil is Ryobi. As were the other 2.

My previous Ryobi brush cutter self destructed.Drive shaft pulled out of the cheap plastic housing.Engine on this runs fine, but the housing is irrepairable.

    Editorial Review

As a trimmer, Ryobi's TrimmerPlus is quiet, efficient and easy to start. But that’s just the beginning: The EZ-Link attachments turn this trimmer into a variety of other tools, all part of Ryobi’s TrimmerPlus series. The .095 line cuts an impressive 18-inch swath, and the professional-style straight shaft gives you great reach for cutting under low foliage. This model comes with a brushcutter attachment that eats up even tougher growth. 1-0 out of 5 stars Jury is out?
The concept got me too. Unfortunately, the product failed to fulfill the promise. It was difficult to start from day one, a guaranteed blister every time. I mean, I have had some genuine moments trying to get this thing started, let's just leave it at that. Once it finally was warmed up and would stay running, it was good. I used it on some serious weeds. The brush cutter was nice for the thicker stuff. I also own the blower/vac and hedge trimmer accessories. I don't know if they work as well as a stand-alone version would, but they work well enough and it's worth it for the convenience.

I was able to use it for two seasons (an event to start everytime), but now the engine is running poorly. Like others have said, good concept needs better motor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for me
I have owned my 890r for about 5 years.I have the straight shaft, with brush cutter blade, the bent shaft with string trimmer, and the edger attachment. I have never had any difficulty starting this tool, getting it to idle, or any other thing. I have done a few things, which I suspect that some other user's have not:I always use gas stabilizer in all lawn fuels, I change oil yearly, and I clean the air filter yearly, or more often if I am swirling up dust and filth, (as we get in Florida with our favorite soil=sand.) I have never had to break this engine down, and don't want to. (I bought it because I am lazy! Let the "machine do the work!") I saw another posting from a "Professional", He said it all: "Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you."
I do not like the extra vibration that a single cylinder 4 cycle engine creates, but it sure beats smelling oil smoke! (I can live with it.)

My 890R brush cutter was never worth the money. It never idled and after 2 seasons in standard homeowner usage it leaks oil out the main bearing like crazy.I cannot force myself to buy another due to the fact that so many people are unhappy with it.A service center told me that no one wants to fix the things cause they are difficult to take apart and the cost to fix is close to that of a new one, so why bother.
